Uued raamatud sel kevadel
Talvepuhkused on puhatud ja Heliose tiim on vahepeal kõvasti vaeva näinud, et tuua sel kevadel teieni kõige põnevamad lugemiselamused. Mida täpselt, sellest kohe lähemalt.
Tumblr media

Tumblr media
Väike stiilinäide raamatust:
“HIRMUTAV SÜNNITUS TÄHENDAB KÕRGEMAID REITINGUID. Suurem osa Põhja-Ameerika naisi saab tänapäeval oma esimese arusaama sünnitusest haigladraamades või komöödiasarjades näidatavatest sünnitustest. Kommertstelevisioon toitub sensatsioonist ja ohtlikest hetkedest. Kui telesarja stsenaariumisse on kaasatud sünnitus, vajab süžee dramaatiline pinge harilikult õnnetust, surma või süüdistuse esitamist. Harilikult käib sinna juurde stseen kohtu- või operatsioonisaalist. Naised, kellel napib reaalseid teadmisi selle kohta, mida sünnitus endast kujutab, on neis draamades peituvate negatiivsete sõnumite suhtes eriti haavatavad. Kommertstelevisiooni nõuded on toonud kaasa paljude sünnitusega seonduvate väärarusaamade leviku.

Tulemuseks on lausa tõsielulise põnevusromaani vääriline ajalooline uurimus pealkirjaga “Patsient A. Uimastid Kolmandas Reichis”.
See raamat pakub laiemat tõlgendust mitmele II maailmasõja ajal toimunud võtmetähtsusega sündmusele.
Raamatust on Saksamaal saanud menuk ja Suurbritannias valiti see ajakirja The Guardian parimate ajalooraamatute hulka.

Kolmas legendaarne isik, kelle mõtteid ja lugu varsti eesti keeles lugeda võib, on jooksumaailma legend Robert “Raven” Kraft, kelle raugematu kirg inspireerib iga päev hiiglasuurt kogukonda.
Tumblr media
1975. aastal andis Raven uusaastalubaduse: joosta igal õhtul 13 kilomeetrit Miami South Beachil.
Tumblr media
See on tõeliselt inspireeriv lugu distsipliinist ja vastupidavusest: kasvõi läbi halli kivi! Raveni kohta saab täpsemalt lugeda tema kodulehelt ravenrun.net.

Laste- ja noortekirjanduses on meil sel kevadel kaks maiuspala. Esmalt kogu perele mõeldud raamat “Eluga pääsenud”, kus kirjanik David Long on kokku kogunud uskumatud ja hämmastavad tõsielul põhinevad pääsemislood.

Lugemisteni!

Week 20
Yesterday I started my 20 week mark. Now is when things are significantly shifting for my body. Now it’s obvious that a human is growing inside me. The nausea, tiredness, sleepiness, shortness of breath, + test, sneak peek telling me it’s a girl, and TWO sonograms wasn’t somehow enough for it to feel REAL! Reality has set in.
Why?.....Well for once, I’m no longer looking like I ate a delicious Mexican meal in one sitting, or a pizza (those are my favorites right now).....no, my belly button is wide open now and my belly has  a cute roundness to it starting below my waistline. Above the waistline it still looks pudgy but whatevs. THEN, last night I tried to sleep with just one pillow under my head and I could not stop snoring!! It would wake me up!! I never snore but this pregnancy weight has really made it a thing that I do now. So I guess I’ll be going back to having 2 pillows under me. Meh. I also get super bloated if I eat too much, food has to be spaced out throughout the day. This sucks because I want to eat all the food but I can’t. Even water has to be tapered out, it’s peeing non-stop. I’m so glad warm weather is here though, I crave a lot of fruit! Watermelon is my fave.
I haven’t felt her move, doc said my placenta is in the front so she’s kicking a pillow, basically. Watching her on the sono was cute cause she was moving SO MUCH and I felt nothing. Yesterday I felt distinct movements, I’m almost positive it was her but who knows. I have no choice but to be patient, enjoy the calmness for now.
Right now I am reading Pushed by Jennifer Block. Definitely recommend it, it’s about a decade old and it could use an update but still it has very useful information. It gives you an idea of what the birthing trends were back then, how natural birth was frowned upon (still is in some areas), and about letting nature take it’s course. My next book will be an Ina May Gaskin book, I think it’s called The Guide to Natural Childbirth. Ina is coming to speak to an event here in my city so I hope I get to meet her and get her to sign my copy.

"Don't think of it as PAIN... think of it as an interesting sensation that requires ALL of your attention.”
Tumblr media
I injured my back this weekend and was reacquainted with the familiar story, “my body is weak, it lets me down, must be careful” that I’ve told myself for years. That fear of moving and doing even more damage came flooding back.
We have a history, this back of mine and I. It started at University when I reached for a guitar and ended up prone, in tears with my flat mates having to call a doctor out. I wasn’t able to move for three days and then it went. This happened several times over the following years. Once a good friend had to drive me up the M1 from my office in London to my mums in the Midlands, again me in tears scared to move an inch. Add to this two spectacular falls in recent-ish years, one off a pair of very high heels and one down a flight of stairs (only one of these was drunken btw!) and my poor back has had to protect and heal itself over and over again
I’ve had an on off yoga practice over the past 20 years, much more “on” the past couple of years as I’ve enjoyed classes at the Well Garden and discovered Yoga With Adriene online. Combined with my meditation and mindfulness training and practice I’ve spent more time IN my body the past two years than I have done the rest of my life thus far.
Which is why my reaction to this injury has been particularly interesting… The first twinges in Mountain Pose on Saturday morning alerted me to adapt that mornings practice but it was when I couldn't walk to the end of the street a couple of hours later that my mindful approach left me. All the physical work I’ve been doing to get stronger for a yoga retreat I’m going on next month was seemingly for nought as my mind screamed “Nooooo! Lie down! Don’t move! You’ll have to cancel your appointments! Where’s the codeine?!”
I’ll be honest, even though I talk about the mind - body connection with clients almost every day of the week it can sometimes take a while for me to remember it applies to me too! When I did I listened to what my mind was saying. Once again I’m amazed by how unhelpful the human mind can be when left unfiltered and unchecked. Yes it’s trying to protect me in the way it’s learned how to but the truth is my back is strong and flexible and moving it gently, with awareness and faith is what helps it heal.
Be (a)ware the stories your mind tells you - they’re often unhelpful and untrue. You have the power (and the responsibility) to take charge and choose a more helpful way.
Affirmations are the fastest way to train your brain to think in a more helpful way. You must hear what it’s saying now to understand the stories / demands it’s developed as a starting point to create the more positive, helpful statements to integrate.
As Ina May Gaskin says of the surges of birth that bring a baby, "Don't think of it as PAIN... think of it as an interesting sensation that requires ALL of your attention.” Pain is an important communication, it can tell us to rest, to move, to stretch, to seek help. Rather than fear it, pay attention and work with it and your experience is all the richer.
So yes I’m a little slower than usual, stretching all the time and still trying to figure out how to strap a hot water bottle to my back but
MY BACK IS STRONG AND FLEXIBLE :-)

Birth & postpartum mortality rates // in the USA 12.1 white people per 100,000 will die during or immediately after birth from pregnancy related causes. Compare that to 40.4 black people per 100k - it’s shocking and unacceptable. (The “other” race category had 16.9 deaths per 100k.)
Research has investigated what is causing that discrepancy, and all we’ve come up with so far is that when factor our things like age at time of birth, number of other births, and education, black birthing people are STILL dying 2-3 times as often as white birthing people.
When Ina May Gaskin (often considered the mother of modern midwifery by mainstream birth culture) was asked about this earlier this week she responded by saying that people who work hard, especially at farming, and who pray and go to church, are more likely to have good birth outcomes. Now, we know that Gaskin is #antiabortion, and we know that she’s #transphobic, but this brought to light a deep belief that she didn’t mean to share. #Racism is in her blood, just like it’s in mine. She has apologized, rightly, but it’s clear that as a white midwife, even a white midwife who has done great things to promote improvement of the US birth & postpartum mortality rates, she doesn’t feel the need to know this information. She hasn’t felt that she needed to deeply consider her work and the way it impacts black people.
As a #whitemidwife I need to work harder on being aware of the discrepancies in outcomes and factor that into my policy making, my interaction with clients, and my public conversation.
THESE DEATHS ARE UNACCEPTABLE. Black people and all people of color deserve better. White providers - we need to be better.

#30daysofgratitude - Day 8 - what book are you grateful for This was a difficult one since I have read SO many books I am truly grateful for, this has to be one #spiritualmidwifery by #inamaygaskins I found this in an old second hand book shop about 3 months before I fell pregnant with my first child and was the only book I read about childbirth for years x so glad my head was filled with positive images of birth and I think my acceptance of my body and its ability to birth definitely enabled me to have a 4 hour Labour at home with my first child as well as leading me to be a doula #journaling #memories #birth #homebirth #naturalpregnancy #doula
