Honestly, my favourite hobby at this point, is start a project, be super into it, make a few chapters or comics about it, write down ideas for scenes and character arcs and then never finish it. Rinse and repeat. If the story is lucky, I will eventually get back to it and make progress.

However I kind of made a rule for myself, that anything I release will eventually have an ending.

That is why I have so much in my notes and computer storage and barely anything on Tumblr or on ao3.

I love being a creative person :)

Anyway, I'm gonna be writing down some story ideas I have for a lot of fandoms, and y'all can tell me which one y'all are actually interested in.

So I can figure out if something is genuinely worth my time to sit down and finish.

Legit I only finished one fic in my entire life, and even then it took my friends to nudge me to finish it.

Ugh.

Brief intro

What this is about: an attempt to chronicle my writing efforts.

Why: both for my own records (because I'm a stats nerd), and to add some transparency to the writing process (because I feel that a lot of writers despair at their own perceived slow pace and lack of progress when exposed to others' highlight reels).

What's with the title: it refers to a quote from Grit by Angela Duckworth:

Nobody wants to show you the hours and hours of becoming. They’d rather show you the highlight of what they’ve become.

Personally, I don't mind showing those hours. Writing can be lonely, especially when it feels like you're the only one struggling, while everyone else is knocking out NaNo-worthy wordcounts in one sitting.

(For full disclosure, these updates will cover exclusively my creative writing, which is non-commercial; whatever writing I do for clients comes under the heading of 'work'.)

So here we go.

Weeks 1-5

I might do weekly reports in the coming months, but January is always a slow writing month for me, both by necessity and by design. This year was no exception, with a lot of work and family care packed into what was a tough month following a tough year.

Week 1 was designated to decompressing from the holidays and family care. Week 1 writing summary: none.

Week 2 featured a really bad sinus infection that put me out of commission for the duration. Week 2 writing summary: none.

Week 3 had a tight schedule of commitments, but I made a point of showing up to my (usually) weekly writing stream, because I realized that failing to do so would mean neglecting the one appointment with myself that I had that week. I hadn't written for two weeks, and it showed. My brain was unwieldy, and every word felt like I was chiseling it out of bedrock. Still, I persevered, and got around 2,000 words of a draft down during a 3-hour stretch. That was all the writing done that week. Week 3 writing summary: 3 hours, 2,000 words (draft).

Week 4 was, basically, week 3 with a vengeance, with the only thing that kept me going being the knowledge of a two-day break by the seaside coming up on Sunday. I showed up for the writing stream, during which I edited rather than drafted. On Sunday evening, a few hours into my break, I was finally able to sit myself down to jot down a 'primer' of the Borderlands series plot, for a friend who can't play the games, but wants to read my fic set in that universe. It proved unexpectedly fun, and the c. 3k words I put down on it was probably the first bit of writing I actually enjoyed this year. Week 4 writing summary: 2 hours, 2,000 words (edit) + 2 hours, 3.3k words (writing-adjacent)

Week 5, which strayed into February, saw me leaning into my excitement for the Borderlands primer, which had morphed into a unauthorized biography of Handsome Jack (with an occasional comment from the man himself; the fictional character, that is, not actually Dameon Clarke). I wrote more of it on my seaside break (which had turned out to be more of a working vacation, because f*** me), and then on the weekly stream. I also found myself very excited about recording snippets of my own writing as the universe's most basic podfic, so that's something I might end up doing more of. Week 5 writing summary: 3.5 hours, c. 4k words (writing-adjacent) + a few hours of podficcing myself.

January writing summary: 12 hours spent on writing and writing-adjacent pursuits, resulting in 2,000 words of draft, another 2,000 words edited, and 2/3 of the Very Unauthorized (But Heavily Annotated) Biography of Handsome Jack (7.5k words and counting). Curious about my excitement re: podfics, which is worth exploring further.

2023 Year in Review/Writing and Hobby Goals 2024

Another end of a year, beginning of another. My greatest achievement this year was buying a duplex! Other than a pipe leak that the house greeted me with my first few weeks in, this place is perfect for me. Though future renovations have to wait til I save more up again, I'm more than content with this home and this space I can truly call mine.

Physical/mental health wise, it's been up and down. While changing jobs last year has overall been for the better for managing my anxiety, the last few months of the year triggered anxiety spikes again (things building and building on top of each other, both internally-caused and job-caused; still so easy for me to just push it down and not deal with the negative feelings in a healthy, accepting way). I finally thought I'd gotten my sleep back in a better, regular pattern during the summer, but then it slid back again in the fall. My migraines continue to pop up, my stomach has become more sensitive, and my weight more of a concern especially on my back and knees, all of which is frustrating to deal with, but at least nothing major or any medical emergencies this year (though this was the year Covid finally got me, whee!). I'm hoping with some health/diet changes I'm making, and exercises that I'll be doing, that that will help.

Writing wise, I posted 14,662 words, with between 8,000 - 10,000 words on unposted works, so just about at my 25,000 word goal. Most of which is for the game that came out of my left field for me and grabbed me by my fandom feels, Baldur's Gate 3. Writing for my two playthrough OCs, Tav (my high Elf Bard) and Sienna (Drow resisting Durge) and Gale of Waterdeep, has been such a joy and comfort (especially during my anxiety spikes), that I haven't felt since Ellana and Blackwall and Shepard and Garrus. I felt the ease and creative drive to write again because of BG3 and the Gale romance and I couldn't be more grateful for it. In total, I posted four ficlets for Tav/Gale, two Ellana/Blackwall ficlets (1, 2), and one Jane/Garrus ficlet (1). While I did work a bit more on re-outlining and planning my original fiction, the next year will likely be the year of Baldur's Gate 3 and My Time at Sandrock fics.

I met my reading goal of 20 new books at exactly 20 (technically I read 21 but it was one I'd read before, Inkheart). Favorites included the The Radium Girls (Kate Moore), The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina (Zoraida Córdova), She Who Became the Sun (Shelley Parker-Chan), A Forgery of Roses (Jessica Olson), and River of the Gods (Candice Millard). And of course, we have more T. Kingfisher with Illuminations and Paladin's Grace.

I did complete a few games from my 2023 list, A Plague Tale - Requiem (loved) and Borderlands - The PreSequel as well as continuous My Time at Sandrock and Disney Dreamlight Valley play. While I did play many a remastered version of games I hadn't yet played such as BTPS, the Metro series, and Uncharted - The Lost Legacy, it was also the year of surprises. Baldur's Gate 3 I vaguely knew about before its full release, but has now become my newest gaming obsession. Indie games such as Pentiment, Escape Academy, Beacon Pines, Dorf Romantik, Jenny LeClue, Wayhaven Chronicles Book III, and Stray Gods were also ones I very much enjoyed. And of course, how can I forgot the relaxing power of PowerWash Simulator (though there's a very good chance the town of Muckingham will be reclaimed by nature at some point :P). And that's nothing to say of the games I have in progress that have engaged me, namely Cyberpunk 2077 and I Was a Teenage Exocolonist.

Now on to my primary writing and hobby goals for 2024!

This is a work in progress that was supposed to be my main borderlands fic, featuring a fixit for Angel? and mostly the reconciliation of Jack, and Rhys and Tim. As they circle around eachother in their own traumas but end up getting to the point that Jack has now bassically made deals with the devil to get 'his' body back. Tims so invested in getting his friend back he barely cares that Jack has stolen his body, and modified it without permission again but is more concerned with losing Jack as his memories are being manipulated and lost by Maliwan.

🌈is there a fic that you worked *really fucking hard on* that no one would ever know? maybe a scene/theme you struggled with?

This one's hard, lmao - not because I do or don't work hard on all of them, but because I'm always running my mouth about how fucking hard certain things are that I'm writing. I think everyone who cares about my demon!au knows how much I've struggled with Chapter 2, it's not even out yet.

...I don't wanna say that really stupid Calypso twins fic I wrote for a Borderlands gift exchange, but - that was harder than it looks! I had to cut and change a lot for it to be coherent and posted on time and - If I could go back and do things different, I probably would? But that's still it being really hard!

As for a scene - definitely Ryou's Christmas dinner monologue in Happy Stories. All of Bakura's stuff were things that no longer fit into my Infinitely In Progress Canon-fic, so they were all pre-written and just needed adjusting into a new setting. And I'd already written Bakura's mom but never got the time to really think about Ryou's. It was a lot of minute tweaking to get across this woman who is acting in what she believes to be logical and fair while still having an emotional tether, all while not seeming too much like I'm making her Quirky(TM), and I think I at least got it through as a possible interpretation. I think people can read "I hate everything your mother cooks" as not just a funnywoman line, but something that connotes that she feels almost guilty so she circumvented feeling that way, and thought 'now everybody wins'.

I have spoken at length about the dollification kink I have pseudo-aquired and how I am going insane over it.

But, in general? Believe it or not - Supply and Demand [NSFW] drove me crazy, oh my God, this was so hard. The timing was hard, conveying intimacy over a phone was hard, tay hel[ped me with the dialogue and the editing because the dialogue was so vague and hard. Porn is so hard sometimes, this was the hardest porn I ever wrote.

3. Do you share your fic ideas, or do you keep them to yourself?

I do! Whether or not people want to hear them...ahahah it depends on who I know might be interested in the fandom the idea is for. Though I do also share original ideas. It all depends on if I think someone will be interested in hearing about it. If I don't think someone will enjoy it, I usually keep them to myself. I usually write them down though so I don't lose them regardless.

5. How many wips do you have?  What fandoms/pairings are they for?

Oh god. Don't ask. Too many. Seriously...too many. Don't make me count. I have a ton in progress that are posted...and way too many not posted. They cover a variety of fandoms, mostly ones I've already posted about in my masterlist. I also have a ton of fic ideas that I don't consider wips because they're barely written. It's just maybe some notes of an idea or a scene that stuck in my head. Some are fandoms I've already written for and others aren't).

Maybe if she's lucky he won't notice. The registration closes with ten players and the game is revealed. It's a 3 of diamonds. Fuck. hi hello, are you currently working on any fics or fanart projects? if you are feel free to ramble about it/any of them!

i'm technically in the middle of working on 2 fics, a oneshot and a 5 chapters fic, both skk c:

the oneshot is rated t and it's like a... continuation(?) of that one extremely cursed wan skit of dazai roleplaying as a dog. i took his comment asking chuuya if he could be his dog and went "haha bet" but like, in a wholesome chuuya-taking-care-of-dazai way. still very much with the dog aspect going on tho

the 5ch one is 😳 rated e. i mentioned it in an ask yesterday hehe, feelings realization+kink realization combo, getting together through platonic bdsm. every chapter is ramping up on both the kink aspect and the intimacy between them and it ended up being weirdly wholesome in a way i didn't expect (it was originally planned to be pwp and just an excuse to write some kinks i don't see enough fics of ngl. but i figured i may as well add at least SOME underlying plot, so, feelings.)

haven't worked on either of these in awhile tho unfortunately 🥲

and! i really really wanna turn my bsd borderlands au into a fic series at some point - start with aya and kunikida and setting up their story and the main conflict, then probably go through some other backstory oneshots or 2-3 chaptered stories 🤔

i figure that first story will end with them being saved by fukuzawa, so the one after it will be about fukuzawa and ranpo and how they got to the current situation as well, maybe throw in poe and how he and ranpo met into the mix too. then go on with other characters that play a part in the current conflict, and how they arrived there ofc, what they've been through before this story started, establish what their personal stakes here are and why they're even taking part in this story at all

aside from backstories i think the main story will also be divided into multiple parts - that first set up, its progression, and then some "side quests". like, the main story is about aya and kunikida, but atsushi and akutagawa have their own arc going on throughout it, so they'll have a part focusing on that too. with the main conflict set up, it'll have multiple branching stories that are tied to it on some level, and are all happening at once

. this is so complex and requires a lot of writing so i doubt i'll get far into it if at all, but it's fun to plan both the story itself and its format tbh 😌 there are so many moving parts lol so finding a way to connect them and bring them together into one thing is a fun challenge 🫡
