Favourite* 50 Movies Seen in 2024
As has often been the case, I feel like I've seen so many disparate films this past year, it's difficult to rank them in a way that makes sense. This is how we get a film like Pulse from 2001 nestled next to Turner & Hooch. And yet, I persevere! I saw a lot of films I loved in 2024, and I'd say the top half of this list are all bonafide bangers (with the rest being solid as well). I've been working to lend more weight to films that genuinely resonate with me, regardless of popular opinion or what I think "seems" like it "should" be the best, and if there are any questionable choices here, you can probably chalk it up to that, because as always...
*Favourite ≠ Best

#in total i watched 160 movies for the first time last year#which turned last year's fluke of less films than the previous year into a trend#but quality over quantity - i never set any specific viewing goal and just let the cards fall where they may#i'm looking forward to what 2025 will bring - i've already logged one film that i suspect will make it into the top 10#(even though it has next to no competition this early in the game)#if you read this far thank you for humouring me! and happy new year!

The Story of Film: A New Generation (2021)
Examining the most powerful movie images of the last decade, filmmaker Mark Cousins updates his classic "The Story of Film" with "A New Generation". Spanning from 2010 to 2021, including the recent pandemic, Cousins spins an epic and hopeful tale of cinematic innovation from around the globe as he helps to uncover new ways of seeing and being in our eclectic and voluminous digital age
Critics' reviews
"For those who appreciate the director’s wide-eyed and open-hearted way of looking at cinema, the documentary is brimming with clips sure to expand their horizons." Peter Debruge: Variety
"Cousins is a compelling writer and narrator (…) The eloquence of his voiceover narration is heightened by the lilts and slants of his Northern Irish–Scottish accent, an intoxicating match for the hypnotic visuals" Sheri Linden: The Hollywood Reporter
"Cousins's assessments offer plenty to argue with, but it's possible to enjoy 'The Story of Film: A New Generation' without agreeing" Ben Kenigsberg: The New York Times
"Full of all the insights and visual/thematic/compositional connections that would impress any film studies professor, 'A New Generation' still stops short of anything that might put it within the broader cinematic conversation it celebrates" Warren Cantrell: The Playlist
"You can’t love movies and not love a good chunk of what Cousins puts on the screen (…) Odd and compelling and oddly compelling" Steve Pond: The Wrap
"It’s another engaging documentary, a journey around the cinematic world over 160 minutes that’s clever and informative (…) Cousins’ approach is consistently refreshing" Brian Tallerico: rogerebert.com
"The filmmaker's low-key and winding style ultimately makes his argument about the continued vitality of cinema far stronger than any amount of industry-approved razzle-dazzle pushiness (…) Rating: ★★★ (out of 4)" Chris Barsanti: Slant

Comments
I just started watching this. First ten minutes seemed promising then it goes on to claim that such visionary films like booksmarts, deadpool, and other average at best films, are somehow modern classics on par with classic greats. Real bottom of the barrel stuff continues and it honestly seems like cousins is making a parody of his previous work. In that way, it is hilarious. Otherwise, this is a deeply sad piece, showing how far we've fallen.
It does get better about three quarters way through. But why he has to pretend that some of these films are somehow modern classics is beyond me. Real reach there mate.
Opinons are like arseholes, everybody had one. Your opinons are arbitrary as most everyone else's. Cousins docs on film history have been incredibly well received, so I'm going to assume they're much more credibly that your take. I do agree that "Booksmart" was overrated, though. Same with like, "Eight…like, Grade". It's like, totally, like…not that good (sarcasm).
Not like the trailer. (Social Commentary about Movie going public.) A 'Documentary' that's a running list/opinions of one person's favorite films. Vanity Project.
Is this seriously suggesting that we're making great films? 😆 😅 😂 🤣😆 😅 😂 🤣The quality of the movies coming out has never been worse than in recent years and these guys are suggesting we're making cinema history? 😆 😅 😂 🤣😆 😅 😂 🤣😆 😅 😂 🤣😆 Wow, It doesn't get better than this.

Are you named after anyone? Well, yes, kind of. My first name is the name of the siren of the river Rhine. My middle name is also an amalgamation of my grandmother and godmother's middle names.
When was the last time you cried? Last week. Grades and various assignments stressing me out, mostly.
Do you have kids? No, I don't. But I would love to one day, I think. Either way, I won't have to worry about that for a long while. My dog however is like my little baby and I love him very very much.
What sports do you play/have you played? When I was a wee thing I did ballet for a while, and then — after all of my friends went away — I tried gymnastics, which I happened to really enjoy. They wouldn't advance me however, no matter how good I got, because I didn't speak Dutch at the time. Now I'm fluent, take that suckers. Anyway, after quitting that I joined a swim team (for racing). I eventually left because my fellow teammates were rather cruel to pick up snorkelling before encountering eye issues and having to get out of the water for a while. Then along came a tailbone issue I needed a surgery for and by the time I could get back in the water two years had passed. I haven't joined any sports teams since, it's been four or five years (I forget). But I enjoy playing badminton with friends, I walk often, I go to the gym on occasion and if I'm feeling really brave I go for runs.
Do you use sarcasm? No. Never. I totally, one hundred percent of the time am suuuuper serious. ;)
What's the first thing you notice about people? Their energy, like their vibe. Not just in that moment, but from their overall mannerisms and outward appearance a rough idea of who they could be. I also notice shoes. Shoes can tell you a lot about a person, I think.
What's your eye color? Bright blue. I'm like that meme where people with blue eyes stare at you all the time like: O.O
Scary movies or happy endings? I LOVE me a good scary movie, some of that really freaky psychological stuff is toe die for. Happy endings are great, but I also love it when a story ends terribly. It just leaves a bigger impact most of the time.
Any talents? I'd say I'm really quite good with anything visually creative. Painting, designing, fashion, drawing. I do pretty well with that kind of thing, interior design too. I've been told I'm a good writer too. Languages come a bit easier to me than to others as well, words just stick easier and my feel for language is rather keen.
Where were you born? Maryland, U.S.A.
What are your hobbies? I love drawing and painting. Sometimes I make mini sculptures out of clay, but that is seldom. I write poetry and I'm working on a novel I've named "Exodus; Prologue" . On top of that I enjoy journaling, writing my accounts of any day I feel needs to be recorded. I collect materials for a scrapbook I've barely started... unfortunately. 😂 I just never make the time. I ADORE thrifting, and I like to go at least once every three months. I listen to music every second I can, exploring new artists and discovering new feelings. Speaking of the discovery of feeling, and self, I am part of a little philosophy club where we discuss whatever we like and occasionally debate topics of excerpts from famous philosophers. I play the piano, and I'm also learning bass and electric guitar. I enjoy singing, although I'm not great. Knitting is also something I've been interested in lately, but I haven't really made anything. Oh, I'm also in the process of making a short film starring myself and a few dear friends, and watching films and learning and absorbing is another passion of mine. And I've been learning Welsh and Spanish for a few months now. So, you know, I keep myself busy.
Do you have any pets? I sure do! My baby boy, Loki! He's a toy schnoodle (poodle and schnauzer mix). He'll be turning eight years old this year, he's becoming a grumpy old man, but I love him to death.
How tall are you? Pocket sized: 5'2" or as I'd say 160 cm
Favorite subject in school? Art and philosophy.
Dream job? I'd love to become a widely appreciated author one day, writing books. I'd also love to write and direct movies or TV shows. If given the opportunity I'd love to spend the rest of my life making art or acting, embodying art. That's who I'd like to become one day.
@echeveriaaa thanks for tagging me on this lovely post! It was fun to do!! Sorry for getting back so late, I've been absolutely swamped with tasks.
15 Questions for 15 Friends
Thank you @serpent-and-seraph for tagging me!!
Are you named after anyone? My first name is just something my mom liked, but I got a middle name after my aunt's (who was one of the kindest people ever and who means a lot to me, so it's nice to sort of have something from her with me at all times)
When was the last time you cried? Some time last week due to being stressed by exams. And watching the last episode of Inside Job. (Leave it to me to only be able to express sadness with the help of animated sitcoms)
Do you have kids? No, but I have a niece and a nephew who I adore unconditionally
What sports do you play/have you played? I've done martial arts for most of the last 10 years and enjoy the occasional football/volleyball game for funsies. At the moment I mostly do solitary exercise for my zoomies and mental health though
Do you use sarcasm? Noo, never. (wink)
What is the first thing you notice about people? I thinkkk the way they look at me. Also, hair.
What’s your eye colour? brown
Scary movies or happy endings? Scary movies that end happily.
Any talents? I have an affinity to Visual-Artsy-Stuff (even though I'm not the most skilled at it, but I suppose that is not the most important thing about it) and people tell me I'm good at listening
Where were you born? Northern Germany
What are your hobbies? drawing & painting, sports, reading, caring for my plants, walking around in nature and staring at cool animals/clouds/trees, singing (badly) when I'm stressed, going feral over movies/shows/other people's art, hiding in my room and get cozy (that counts right)
Do you have any pets? I have plants ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
How tall are you? 5'4" / 1,65m
Favourite subject in school? Art and Biology
Dream job? Partly working as a neuropsychologist and partly in research (and secretly writing and illustrating insane little books)
Since I haven't been back on Tumblr for long, I don't really know that many people yet/anymore, so I'd like to use this to get to know some of you a little! If you're feeling like it !! :)

"Roy is fine with babysitting. He's been babysitting since Phoebe was born, and even though he doesn't know Henry nearly as much, the night was running pretty smoothly so far, with a new Marvel movie and a Lego set. The Lego is specially interesting to him, who never had the money as a child to own them, so he's almost as invested as the boy on trying to turn the pieces into a Star Wars ship. That's why it takes him a few seconds to understand the question when Henry asks why does his father keeps clothes on Roy's house."
Prompt if you ever want it, love square
Thank you so much! I wrote this as a sort of writing exercise, so it may not be super polished, but I loved the prompt and had a great time writing this and I hope you have fun reading it. (Majority of story is under the cut.)
.
Both Ted and Rebecca have told Roy several times that he doesn’t need to buy Henry anything.
Apparently, it’s more than enough for Henry to get to spend some quality time with him and Keeley. Apparently, he’s already won Henry’s affection simply by being himself, whatever that’s supposed to mean. But when Keeley has to go out of town for work on the day they’re supposed to babysit, and Phoebe is invited to a sleepover at her best friend’s house that she can’t possibly miss, Roy figures the Luke Skywalker’s Landspeeder LEGO set he’d already ordered before the social conflicts and pep talks and out-of-town trips started stacking up is security. Security against Henry finding Roy scary—or worse, boring—on their first ever night hanging out alone.
He hopes Rebecca doesn’t make fun of him for his choice of set; she already calls him Darth Vader when he gets so angry he wheezes.
He hopes Ted doesn’t Google the set and find out Roy has spent £160 on his son.
When the set shows up on his doorstep, Roy looks at the packaging and realizes it’s rated 18+. Heart pounding, he determines via context clues this doesn’t mean there’s a NSFW voicebox inside the C3PO. There’s no nudity involved. No cheeky sex toys among all the little building blocks. This set is for adults because it requires mature levels of time and patience. Luckily, Roy himself is an adult, mostly ready to provide adult supervision to the person most like Ted in the entire world. They’re only a week into this month-long visit of Henry’s, and Ted’s getting better at recognizing Henry’s independence, letting him walk to the to the store down the street same as Phoebe does, letting him spend a little time alone in the house if he and Rebecca need to run an errand and Henry doesn’t want to join. But tonight is Ted and Rebecca’s anniversary, and they’ll be out for hours at dinner and a show, and Henry needs an adult, and might appreciate the opportunity to tackle a challenging adult LEGO set with a grown-up who isn’t his embarrassing old dad.
He hopes.
Ted drops Henry off not long after training ends, ensuring he’ll have plenty of time to go back home and get ready before the dinner reservation. Roy isn’t totally pathetic; he doesn’t show Henry the LEGO set right away. He leads him on a quick tour of the most pertinent rooms of the house, and Henry enthusiastically compliments his trophies and the size of the TV in the living room (he fought to keep that ridiculous TV when he moved in with Keeley last year, and now feels vindicated anew) and, more surprisingly, the “really nice” blue color of the curtains in the guest bathroom.
Roy quickly remembers that Henry already knows him and likes him, and it doesn’t hurt that he orders a pizza and puts on a Spider-Man movie while they eat. But when they’ve finished their pizza and cleared plates to the kitchen, Henry seems too energized to go back to the movie, and asks if they could finish watching it another time. There’s only one thing for it: Skywalker’s Landspeeder.
“Oh, whoa,” Henry says when Roy hands him the box. “Oh whoa oh whoa oh whoa. Graham and his mom did this one, and I was so jealous!” He goes serious. “Not, like, mean jealous. I just really really like this one. Thank you so much.” He actually jumps up and down a little, unable to contain the enthusiasm to words alone, and the sight of it makes Roy miss Ted like he didn’t see him only an hour or so ago, like they didn’t spend the entire workday together, like they didn’t go out for lunch just the two of them and spend so long making out in the car that they had to get takeaway instead of eating at the counter.
Considering Henry literally somersaulted on the way to the door when the doorbell rang with the pizza, he’s surprisingly patient with the Landspeeder, and rather good with the fine motor skills such a mature set requires. Henry knows from experience that it’s best to go page-by-page with the instructions, carefully checking each step for completion before moving on, and they sit on the floor (Roy’s knee only screams for a minute) next to the coffee table for at least half an hour of studious quiet, the building process their only conversational topic.
Suddenly, Henry springs to his feet. “Gotta go to the bathroom,” he announces, and he takes off in the direction of the guest bath with the good curtains.
Roy is so absorbed in reading ahead in the instruction book, keeping an eye on any potential trouble areas to come—he never had a toy this expensive or involved as a kid, and by the time he was only a year or two older than Henry, his entire life revolved around football—that he barely notices that it takes Henry an unusually long time to come back.
“You all right?” Roy mutters when Henry finally returns to the living room, assuming he’ll get a largely ignorable affirmative answer before they throw themselves back into the LEGO set.
But Henry’s “yeah, I’m okay” is tentative, a little shaky.
“Henry,” Roy says, and his heart pounds worse than it did when he thought he’d bought Ted Lasso’s wholesome son the LEGO equivalent of a blue joke. “What’s the matter? Do you not feel well?”
“Yeah, I just.” Henry combs his fingers through his hair. He looks a little pale. “I saw something. When I was in the bathroom.”
If it was a mouse, he would’ve hollered his shock. Like father, like son. “You can tell me.”
“A Joe Arthur Gatestack shirt, hanging on the back of the bathroom door. Is it my dad’s? I think he’s the only person in England with that shirt. Or maybe,” he adds hopefully, “he got you a souvenir?”
Roy’s first reaction is a flare of anger, outsized and wobbly.
Not at Henry.
At Ted, for being careless, when he’s had such a careful plan for this visit. A week and a half of everyone spending time together, getting used to each other. Half a week of communication: a conversation with him and Henry alone. A family meeting for Henry to ask questions of all the adults. Two weeks of going about more-or-less as normal—the kid-friendly version of the normal they’ve long since established while Henry was away at school in Kansas, blissfully none-the-wiser.
At himself, for cleaning the fucking bathroom himself but letting the shirt go unnoticed because he doesn’t fucking notice Ted’s clothes lying around anymore because they’re no longer a notable part of the landscape.
He inhales as deeply as he can muster, and exhales quietly enough—he hopes—that the sound isn’t alarming. “Yeah, it’s his.”
“I guess I was just, um, wondering why my dad would’ve had to take his shirt off at your house. It’s stupid, though, people leave stuff at their friend’s houses all the time.”
“No, it isn’t stupid,” he says. “Your dad spends a lot of time here, and sometimes that means, uh, changing clothes.”
To Roy’s horror, Henry looks like he might cry. “Like, as friends? Not, like, to be naked. Right? Because he and Rebecca are in love.”
“I promise, nothing’s getting in the way of your dad and Rebecca being in love.” Roy thinks about how Ted always figures out how the other person needs to be reassured, and how Keeley can smooth over any situation with a joke and a kind word, and how Rebecca’s good at insisting on the truth with so much bravado that you’d have to be an idiot to counteract her. “Your dad’s gonna talk to you about it. He and Rebecca spend a lot of time here, with Keeley and me.”
“So…do you love him?”
Roy takes a pause before answering, hoping Henry doesn’t interpret the pause as a no. He weighs his options. Ideal for this conversation to have occurred with Ted first, but suddenly the worst case scenario isn’t this conversation. The worst case scenario is Henry hearing someone lie and say his father isn’t loved.
“Yeah,” Roy says. “I fucking lo—I love him.” He looks at Henry, sees a tiny grin spark in the boy’s face. “Everyone loves your dad. I’m lucky, aren’t I?”
“Um, yeah,” Henry says. “But I don’t get it. What about Rebecca?”
“It’s kind of likeit’s like we all chose to be in the same family.”
Henry nods slowly. “I think I wanna just ask Dad about it. Can we work on the dashboard now?”
Thank fuck. “Course,” Roy says, handing Henry the instruction book. “I read ahead but we’re on page 18.”
A bit before midnight, Roy hears a car idling in front of the house. Two doors shut, then the engine revs and the car takes off. Ted and Rebecca must plan to stay for at least a little while. It’s just as well; Henry’s been asleep in the guest room for a couple hours now, and Roy wasn’t sure if it’d be crass to invite them to stay over on their own anniversary, but he’d figured it was worth a try. Especially now that Henry’s seen the shirt. Besides, Roy isn’t totally sure which anniversary they’re celebrating today. They’ve got several, just for the two of them—the dating anniversary, a couple obscure biscuit-related ones, the anniversary of the day they decided marriage wasn’t for them but they wanted to be together forever.
A minute or so later, they let themselves in. They’re both dressed up, Rebecca in a form-fitting black dress, Ted in a grey suit. Roy isn’t sure if it’s crass to appreciate the extra hotness brought on by the anniversary, but it’s too fucking late to care. They’re wine-flushed and happy, and he doesn’t miss the way they both sway into the kisses he plants on their cheeks. It’ll be easy to convince them to stay over.
“How’d he do?” Ted asks, and at the same time Rebecca announces she’s going to the kitchen to get them water. “And how’d you do?” Ted adds before Roy gets a chance to answer the first question.
“Good,” Roy says. “Got something to talk to you about, though.” He ushers Ted into the living room, Rebecca already having brushed past. They might as well sit amongst the LEGO work-in-progress. Might as well see the mess that precedes the final impressive form.

I was tagged by @stevielynnicks, thank you so much! ♡ So sorry it took me a while to post this.
Nickname: Weirdly enough, don’t really have one that stuck around, because my name is super short. Though I do get called “Aid” by my friends, “Aidok” by my relatives and “Aidakona” by my dad (shout out to my dad for coming up with this mouthful of a nickname, like how even).
Gender: Female
Star sign: Aries
Height: 160 cm
Time: 21:35
Birthday: 4th of April
Favorite bands/groups: The Smiths and The Beatles (And I’m tempted to say The Strokes, but I feel like our relationship is not quite there yet.)
Favorite solo artists: Angèle, Kate Bush and Françoise Hardy
Song stuck in my head: “Brooklyn Bridge to Chorus” and “New York City Cops” by The Strokes. Oh, who am I kidding, just name any The Strokes song, chances are it’s been stuck in my head for two weeks.
Last movie: Soul (2020). It’s been a few months since I last watched a movie, wow.
Last TV show: Brooklyn Nine-Nine
When did I create this blog: It’s been three years already, but I used this blog on and off and would just use it as a dumpster for my word vomit and to spam whatever I was obsessed with at the moment. However, I kinda fell in love with tumblr a few months ago and started using it more consistently. I see tumblr differently now. Tumblr is cool.
What do I post: Mostly anything ‘60s-‘90s related, like music, movies and photography
Last thing I googled: “People who survived rabies”. I listened to a podcast about the first person who survived rabies yesterday and got curious about other cases. I always found rabies fascinating and terrifying at the same time — it surely is something that doesn’t sounds like a big deal, but in fact is one of the worst ways a person can die. (What a fun thing to mention in a light-hearted tumblr tag game!)
Other blogs: Don’t have any. Though I created a blog called “theboywiththethorninhisside” few months ago, because I couldn’t believe it wasn’t taken and I was like hell, then I’ll take it! But then I reblogged one post, realized it was pointless and deleted it, lol.
Do I get asks: Well, if you count those random tags and stuff. Other than that, not really.
Following/followers: Following – 60, followers – 64, lmao. (I’m so famous. Who wants to get tickets for my next Meet & Greet, girlies?)
Average hours of sleep: Ideally, I would say 6-7 hours — I feel like it’s the amount my body actually needs. However, I sleep 5 hours on average, sometimes even less, because I go to sleep later than I need to and have work early in the morning. I’m a terrible adult.
Lucky number: 4 and 47. I wouldn’t say lucky though, I don’t really believe in lucky numbers, more like favorite ones.
Instruments: None, unfortunately. I really want to start learning to play bass, flute and kalimba though! The list is much longer than that, but I want to learn bass and flute first because they’re my favorite instruments and kalimba because it’s a relatively affordable instrument.
What am I wearing: Red and black plaid house dress (really cozy) and black knee high socks
Dream job: Book translator. Though my plan is to try as many different things as I can for the sole purpose of getting experience — there are so many interesting things in life. Then retire at like 35 or something and just chill.
Dream trip: Iceland and New Zealand
Favorite food: If I had to pick one, it would be noodles
Favorite song: “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out” by The Smiths. Means a lot to me.
Last book I read: Like the one I’ve finished? (I don’t know why I’m asking a question, like who am I talking to?) Then it would be “Picture of Dorian Gray” by Oscar Wilde. If it’s the ones I’m reading at the moment, then it’s “And Then There Were None” by Agatha Christie and “Letters from a Stoic” by Seneca.
Three fictional universes I’d like to live in: Hmmm. Harry Potter comes first to mind, because of course, I owe it my child self. I’m a coward though and would not survive in such an intense universe, I would totally die within my first few days there, but hey, at least it would be really fun few days. Then I would choose the village from My Neighbour Totoro. I would love to live in a children’s book/movie. They feel so sunny, cozy and pure. Lastly, Dead Poets Society? I think it counts? I’m such a sucker for boarding school themes and can you just imagine yourself sitting under a tree reading a book while bagpipes are playing somewhere in the background? Chills.
This was so much fun! RIP to your eyes, but this tiny font is too cute, I can’t resist.
I tag @sixtiesfangirl, @whyteenagewhore, @inbetweenights and @kazookazoo!

UC 50.29 - Magdalene, Cam vs Warwick
I tweeted last week, at the height of the mania surrounding the Handforth Parish Council Meeting of Thursday December 10th 2020 (HPCMOT10D2020), that I was going to try and do this week’s review in the style of said meeting (if you haven’t seen the video, you’d be better off watching it than reading this, because it is possibly the purest nuggest of funny this side of the pandemic).
Now, that may sound impossible - how does one write a review of a television quiz show in the style of a cantankerous parish council meeting - but you are talking to someone who has previously reviewed University Challenge in the style of the movie Tenet, and the book Ducks, Newburyport. Notwithstanding the relative success (or failure) of those endeavors, there is nothing to say that I cannot at least try to do this.
However, given that I failed to get my review out on Monday (a mere three days after the initial virality), and am instead writing it on the following Saturday (eight days after the event), it is quite possible that I have missed my moment. The meme-geist (and I have carefully considered my choice of invented word here. Given that zeit means time and geist means spirit, perhaps the more linguistically correct option would have been zeit-meme, but that doesn’t quite capture the geist of what I was going for, and is a less satisfactory portmanteau, which is where the real meaning is gleamed in English) moves quickly.
And though I harbour hope that this meeting lives long in the cultural memory, so that years from now I can reference quotes from it in pleasant company, it will probably be lost within weeks, along with other such heroes of the Lockdown Internet as Lawyer Cat and Tiger King.
Already we have seen the rise and fall of Jackie Weaver, the erstwhile main character of the video, who was interviewed on TV news channels all over the world, but who was later revealed to be a Tory Councillor, much to the chagrin of many of her most vociferous fans, who had proclaimed her a modern feminist icon for her no-nonsense approach to Aled’s iPad and the imposterous PC Handforth Clerk.
This volte-face from Mrs Weaver’s staunchest early supporters comes about as a direct result of the need people have for everything to mean something, and for all people to always be total good or total bad. Yes, there is a conversation to be had about men in a position of power and privilege treating women poorly and speaking over them as if they are not there. But when that conversation feels the need to place one party as angelic and the other demonic (no matter how clearly that appears to be the case) it leaves no space to examine the nuances involved in the way people live their lives (this may seem like a grand way of discussing what seems like a cut and dry case of a male superiority complex, but when, for Mrs Weaver’s actions to be commendable, she also needs to be ‘of sound character’ in every other sense, it leaves us all open to inconsistencies and illogical systems of thought), which is not something that we need to do for silly videos anyway.
In reality, it wasn’t that surprising that she turned out to be a Tory - she is a councillor after all, and a large proprotion of councillors are Conservative Party Councillors. That doesn’t mean she was wrong to kick those men out, but it is further evidence that there is nothing to be gained from painting people as heroes or villains - or at least there is nothing to be gained from acting like those paintings carry real world currency. You either die the hero or live long enough to see yourself somewhat unsurprisingly outed as a member of the Conservative party...
Anyway, by now you’re probably thinking ‘when do we plan to start?’, and (~fUcK oFf~) I think we could start any moment. Though I will mention that if anyone if being disruptive, I will have to throw them out of the review, and if anyone has a point of order to raise they will have to wait until the episode starts.
This quarter-final was a qualification bout, between two sides who had already won one match at this stage, with Magdalene having beaten Birkbeck and Warwick taken down Imperial only last week. The winners would claim the first semi-final spot, while the losers would have to play again to make it through.
The first question of the evening was ‘what is the difference between a Clerk and a Proper Officer?’, which Magdalene’s Davies correctly identified as a trick question - there is no difference between a Clerk and a Proper Officer. At this point the recording had to be stopped to settle a dispute, as someone pretending to be the Warwick captain believed this not to be the case, and claimed that Paxman was breaking the law by accepting the answer.
This imposter suggested angrily that Paxman should read the standing orders, and another of his sidekicks yelled out that he should not only read the standing orders but understand them also. These gentlemen went onto claim that the quarter-final was being staged illegally, but this was not the case, and Paxman was forced to remove the false captain from the recording, though they claimed that he did not have the authority to do this (you have no authority Jeremy Paxman! No authority at all). But he did have the authority, and the false captain was removed from the meeting.
This did not initially aid the smooth continuation of proceedings however, as there remained some troublemakers in the audience, who started speaking in tongues and who loudly proclaimed to someone off screen that they were ‘trying to record an episode of University Challenge, you fool’ on not one but two occasions, before trying to assert that in the absence of the false captain it was they who should take charge.
Members of the Magdalene team then raised the question of how it was that the false Warwick captain had come to be known by that moniker. Paxman informed everyone that he had simply declared himself to be the new captain, and that he, Paxman, could also, in a similar fashion, declare himself to be Britney Spears, which solicited giggles from all those in attendance.
With these issues dealt with, the match could be continued, and Warwick, this time under the rightful and competent leadership of Andrew Rout, raced off into a hundred point lead. Magdalene looked a little stunned by all of the earlier excitement and stuggled to get into the game in the first half.
They had a brief resurgence when Paxman asked if anyone would object to the banished troublemakers being readmitted. Naturally Magdalene felt strongly about this and buzzed in with the correct answer - no. Two more starter questions followed, and they closed the gap to forty five.
Rout stopped the Warwick rot with the picture starter (on dressmakers) - an inspired guess of Mary Quant. In his previous episode he had guessed Mary Quant incorrectly, so he was delighted, and amused, that this time he had been right. Another brilliant guess of Versace gave them a bonus as well, but their luck ran out with Coco Chanel, who was dead by the time the next dress had been designed.
Another starter, this time from Braid, put Warwick out of reach going into the final few minutes. A quick run of back-to-back starters, with near perfect bonusing, wasn’t enough for Magdalene, who ended the match forty points adrift.
Final Score: Magdalene 160 - 200 Warwick
Jackie Weaver 1 - 0 Handforth PC Clerk
Phew! What an episode/meeting that was. Congratulations to Warwick on their win and to Jackie Weaver for keeping order. I don’t have much else to say other than to reiterate the advice from earlier than all standing orders should be both read and understood.

To Infinity and Beyond: how animation evolved through time
Before Infinity and Beyond
by Isabelle C. Barona and John Stephen J. Wilwayco
As animators discover computers, animations are expected to change over time. Toy Story is known to be the first-ever major animation in motion pictures’ history. As it clearly seems to be, noticeable differences between the two creations of Toy Story isn’t hard to distinguish as it can be seen through the animations’ quality of the movie itself, the sound effects, the voice actors, and even the unnoticeable little information like dust particles, scratches, and the likes that can be seen throughout the entirety of the movie.
Toy Story’s director, John Lasseter, envisioned a new experience that would not only satisfy the child in his soul, but would also take the audience into a fresh journey that will astound them.
Lasseter’s imagination led him and his team to make an astonishing creation that would soon make a new name for film. He even highlighted the passion of his team for Toy Story’s creation, saying “every animator is a child at heart.” And so, he wanted to extend that passion and love for toys into the big screens.
At the very beginning, Toy Story has already made a big statement. Their release was huge and the fan base, colossal. In a behind-the-scenes video, the creators have shown how large their efforts were in creating the film in the 90’s (VHSfx, 2013). It turned out well, with nicely rendered animations that at one point in that period, seemed incredible.
Time, however, is a big factor for evolution. One could even tell that Toy Story 4 today is quite incomparable to where it first started. In a documentary by Insider (2019), Toy Story 4 was featured and people went crazy from how detailed the movie was made into. It seemed like an animation imitating reality.
According to Ashton (2019), for more than two decades, Pixar did successfully establish itself by committing undeniable excellence when it comes to making animations. A lot of changes did really happen for Pixar from November 22, 1995 up until June 21, 2019. With Pixar’s unique advancement in terms of computer animation, it continues to pride itself as a studio which produces invigorating ideas to the forefront. This is why Toy Story 1995 and Toy Story 4 are really the ones that paved the way for Pixar to continue growing significantly as a top-tier animation house in the industry.
Getting Technical
by Andrei Arcellana and Jerome Anthony Mangalus
The Toy Story cartoon animation movie has been part of everyone’s childhood since this is the first animated cartoon in the cinema in 1995. And in 2019, the new latest film of Pixar, which is Toy Story 4, has been released, and it became a trending topic because of its 24 years gap and the focus of the animators on the little details of the said film. According to Desiderio & Phillips (2020), before achieving this almost to reality quality of the film, Pixar first used and experimented with these elements on the films prior to Toy Story 4 like Monster’s Inc, Bugs Life, Finding Nemo, Ratatouille, The Incredibles, Cars, etc. The details of the humans on the first Toy Story were not perfect, using all the elements that are in the films mentioned in the previous sentences, they have fully created the Toy Story 4 with almost to reality graphics. Additionally, the technology that was used in creating both movies was very different.
As claimed by Desiderio and Phillips (2020), getting to the present sequel of Toy Story required numerous innovations. Rendering was the biggest factor in creating both movies. In the creation of the 1st Toy Story, 117 computers that were in operation 24/7 were used. To properly handle the rendering of the 1st Toy Story, they have created an application that is called Renderman. Using all these computers and applications, the movie was in 4 years of making. The producers said that if they render the first film in today’s time, it would be faster than watching the said movie. But to create good quality graphics, rendering one frame in creating Toy Story 4 had occurred for 60 to 160 hours. Overall, 5 years was used to make and fully create the Toy Story 4.
Furthermore, the technology behind the animation of the “Toy Story” had a main factor to consider in order to make it happen, which is the rendering. Rendering is where the computer saves each video frame with lighting and motion effects, and these video frames are the ones that make up the movie. The animators of the “Toy Story” had to run 117 computers that are running 24 hours a day. These computers had to render each frame that could be 45 minutes to 1800 minutes (30 hours) and it also depends on the complexity of the frame, and they have to render a total of 114,240 frames.
For the movie “Toy Story 4” the animation process also includes rendering, but because of the advancement of the technology, computers that rendered the movie are high-powered computers that are able to put elements like CG scenes, geometry, lighting, and motion effects. Sisson said, “the most expensive frame from the movie “Toy Story 4” took about 325 hours to render, and it is running on a computer with four cores” (May, 2021).
Little Details Require a Big Cost
by Jesse Jerome Jamias and Shanelle C. de Luna
We noticed a lot more details especially on their differences since it's quite noticeable in a good way because it improved. First on the list is Toy Story’s Scud vs Toy Story 4’s cat, it is a big achievement during the late 90’s to animate a dog but the detail in the fur isn’t there compared to Toy Story 4’s cat wherein it looks realistic and is made with noticeable attention to detail. Next is that during the first Toy Story, there were a lot of limitations, for instance Pixar in the early years hadn’t quite figured out how to fully animate human characters and there were a lot of shots of hands and feet so the viewer wouldn’t see any missing details. Lastly, we also noticed how the screen got bigger. Toy Story 1 used a 1.85:1 aspect ratio while Toy Story 4 expanded to 2.39:1. After all, 24 years is a lot considering the fact that technology is constantly evolving.
The evolution of animation back when the first movie of “Toy Story” came out up until the most recent film in the franchise “Toy Story 4” came out. We can definitely see the evolution and improvements in these movies. The changes between these two movies are quite considerable knowing that these 2 movies are more than 20 years apart and perfectly shows the evolution of animation over the years.
Back when the first Toy Story movie came out it was the first computer-animated film to ever be released with the budget of the movie being around $30,000,000 it paved the way for the continual advancement of computer-animated films. Fast forward to 2019 for the release of Toy Story 4 we can see how far this industry has come and the noticeable changes in the animation itself, now having a budget of around $200,000,000 we can see just how amazing the technological advancements and evolution of animation has come just from this movie franchise.
Toy Story’s Timeless Effect
by Bhrylle Humbert Corpuz
Starting from when we were kids we all loved a lot of animation films and cartoons. The entertainment, the fun, the joy it brings us really puts our minds at ease, forgetting about the worries and acting just like kids. But, one of the most eye-catchers or the reason we are so immersed from these kinds of films we are watching is its animation and its beautiful colors.
Thinking about it, if we are to compare the animated films we watched back when we were kids to today’s new animated films we can see a lot of difference. For example, if we are to compare Toy story 1 to Toy story 4, we will notice a lot of new things from the two movies. The most noticeable factor is its graphics design, the lightings and the animation for each scene in both movies. As we all know that these things are the most eye-catching factors when watching a movie especially if their target viewers are children.
Over time, we can see Pixar’s improvement and innovation as they continue to make great and wholesome animation films. Considering the 24 years gap between the two movies we can see the progress and success of both films. Ever since the creation of the first toy story movie they made good use of the technology, the tools, the equipment around them and with the ability of using their great minds to make an outstanding masterpiece.
As they continually do this their skills continue to improve to bring us new high quality films. This also shows how much animation evolved through years. With continuous practice and with the continuous innovation in technology we are able to improve and produce better high quality animation films.
Photos taken from the documentaries: “The Making of Toy Story - (1995)” and “How Pixar’s ‘Toy Story 4’ Was Animated | Movies Insider”, it depicts the difference of the graphics design, lightings, shadings etc., from the movies Toy Story and Toy Story 4.

The Evolution: Toy Story 1 and Toy Story 4′s Animation
For many people, Toy Story is a favorite film. It was a part of our upbringing and has been cited many times. It is a movie about a cowboy doll that belongs to Andy and the doll named Woody. Andy's favorite toy is Woody, but when he receives a Buzz Lightyear action figure, he feels intimidated and dislikes Buzz's arrogance. When Andy and his family transfer to a new place, Woody and Buzz must band together to elude the wicked neighbor boy Sid, who has abducted them, and back to Andy.
Pixar released the fourth and final Toy Story last June 20, 2019, and we saw how far the animation progressed by watching each movie.
TOY STORY 1 VS TOY STORY 4 ANIMATION
The first Toy Story was released in 1995, and it was Pixar's first film. This film had a lot going on it because it would either launch Pixar to the top of the box office or see them disappear. Since it was Pixar's first show, they wanted to go big. After making a short film called "Tin Toy" in 1988, Pixar wanted to branch out and tell a story from the perspective of a toy (Copper, 2019) (Ashton et al., 2019).
In 24 years, Pixar has gone from being a division of Lucasfilm working hard to make the first computer-generated animated film in the history of film to one of the most trusted, accomplished film companies in Hollywood right now, with a name that (almost always) guarantees greatness as soon as that little wiggling lamp bounces its way onto the screen. Let's take a look at how Pixar continues to grow as a studio, particularly in the field of animation through the lens of Toy Story and Toy Story 4.
In this scene, look how shiny Bo in “Toy Story 4” than the “Toy Story”. Woody encounters Bo in a park and is stunned at her transformation. Animating Bo is difficult. First, The porcelain handicap had to be overcome. The animators at Pixar wanted to go all-in on porcelain, studying the glazing and cracking and adding it to Bo. To get her into the real world, the studio had to change some of its truths. According to Patty Khim, if they had played Bo true porcelain, Bo wouldn’t have moved at all. To express athleticism and defend herself, the animation team studied dance and gymnastics in addition to state-of-the-art texture and shading.
In the 1995 movie "Toy Story," this is a dog. At the time, it was a remarkable accomplishment, but the fur detail simply isn't there. Consider this cat from "Toy Story 4." The distinction is obvious. However, getting from that dog to this cat necessitated a great deal of ingenuity in the meantime.
Pixar changed animation in 1995 with “ Toy Story” the first full-length computer-animated movie. With "Toy Story 4, "Pixar is proving that it's far from done changing the game.
Pixar has published 21 feature-length films between 1995 and 2019, four of which are "Toy Story" films. Nobody had ever seen anything like "Toy Story" when it was first published in 1995. And the animators had to do some incredible things to bring it to life. And rendering is one of the most critical aspects of how Pixar creates its magic. Rendering is the process of converting a digital picture into a perfect finished image or video frame, complete with lighting and motion effects.
The animators needed 117 computers running 24 hours a day to make "Toy Story." Depending on how complex the frame is, it could take anything from 45 minutes to 30 hours to render. There were 114,240 frames to render in total. There are over 77 minutes of animation spread across 1,561 shots in the film. To manage all of this video, they had to create a new system called Renderman.
Producer Jonas Rivera claims that if they had to make "Toy Story" today, they could do so faster than you could watch the entire film. However, due to the film's complexity, rendering a single frame will take anything from 60 to 160 hours.
There were still a lot of restrictions. Pixar, for example, hadn't yet worked out how to completely animate human characters at the time. Since animating clothes takes a long time, you'll see a lot of shots of hands and feet from the viewpoint of a toy in the movie. They would also choose not to entirely light characters on purpose, so you wouldn't notice any missing information. Later, I'll go into lighting and completely outfitting characters.

apparently this list was blocked in Canada and Cuba and all it is is somebody’s opinion: By Hannah Mylrea- 8th September 2020 “Every Taylor Swift song ranked in order of greatness She's one of the greatest pop stars in the world, and she's released the official lockdown album in 'Folklore'. But which is Tay's single best song of all time?” article with rankings starts here:
A few months ago Taylor Swift did something totally un-Swiftian, and surprise released her latest record ‘Folklore’. The indie-inspired album, which featured collaborations with Bon Iver and The National‘s Aaron Dessner, was remarkable and unexpected, and another example of the bold moves Swift has navigated throughout her career.
From the country of her early albums to the glittering synth-pop of ‘1989’ and experimental sounds of ‘Reputation’, this is an artist who’s constantly reinvented her sound. Yet at the core of it one thing remains: Swift’s sheer songwriting talent. It’s worth remembering that Taylor is the person who wrote ‘Love Story’ in 20minutes on her bedroom floor when she was only a teenager.
Now, almost a decade-and-a-half into her career, we look back on Swift’s glittering discography and rank every single one of her songs. That’s right: all 161 of ’em.
A few caveats to begin with – no officially unreleased songs have been included, nor songs that are “featuring Taylor Swift”. Anything written under a pseudonym has also been forgone (so her credit as Nils Sjöberg ‘This Is What You Came For’ isn’t given a look in). We have, however, included officially released cover songs – so that includes all of the Swifty renditions on the ‘Speak Now World Tour Live’ record and her bevvy of Christmas covers.
Additional words: El Hunt, Nick Reilly
161‘Christmases When You Were Mine’ (2007)
There’ve been a handful of Swift-does-Christmas moments over the years. Some are truly lovely – but this original tune from 2007 EP ‘The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection’ is not one of them.
160‘Superstar’ (2008)
A syrupy song about Swift fancying a celebrity, the puppy love of ‘Superstar’ is innocuous but bland.
159‘You Are in Love’ (2014)
A sweet bonus track from ‘1989’, it’s inoffensive but you can see why it was only bunged on the end of the deluxe edition of the album.
158‘White Christmas’ (2007)
This festive cover is absolutely fine – nothing more, nothing less.
157‘Silent Night’ (2007)
A cover of the classic Christmas carol, Swift well and truly puts her stamp on Franz Xaver Gruber’s song. Growing to a melodramatic finale, it’s an overblown rendition.
156‘Beautiful Ghosts’ (2019)
Written by Swift and musical theatre composer Andrew Lloyd Webber for last year’s film adaptation of Cats, this is a bit slushy. But, no, we wouldn’t say it’s a CAT-astrophe.
155‘Christmas Must Be Something More’ (2007)
Another festive tune: this time Swift questions the commercial nature of Christmas over rootin’ tootin’ country instrumentals, concluding that December 25th is actually about “the birthday boy who saved our lives”. Happy birthday JC!
154‘Umbrella’ (2008)
An acoustic cover from Swift’s ‘iTunes Live from SoHo’ EP. It’s nice, but little more to it.
153‘American Girl’ (2009)
A cover of the Tom Petty classic, you can’t deny it’s a beast of a song. But this slowed down rendition saps some of the energy out of it.
152‘Last Christmas’ (2007)
There’s plenty of Christmas joy in this cover, but it doesn’t have a patch on the Wham! classic.
151‘King of My Heart’ (2017)
This electro-pop moment has a sweet sentiment: that the extravagance of past relationships isn’t what Swift wants anymore, and now this new love interest could be The One (“Is this the end of all the endings? / My broken bones are mending”). But this soppiness is delivered over jittery instrumentation, which three years on already sounds dated.
150‘If This Was A Movie’ (2010)
A bonus track from ‘Speak Now’, ‘If This Was a Movie’ is frustratingly repetitive. With its droning guitar licks and dreary chorus, it stutters towards the finish line.
149‘Last Kiss’ (2010)
A plodding waltz from ‘Speak Now’. Fine, but by no means vintage Taylor.
148‘Santa Baby’ (2007)
A twee cover of the iconic Christmas song, it’s a sauceless version of the usually sultry festive bop.
147‘I Did Something Bad’ (2017)
A cavernous slab of EDM, this was basically Swift proving that she’s a good girl gone bad. The devilish lyrics are fun (“They say I did something bad / Then why’s it feel so good?”), the dubstep-laced hook of “Ra-di-di-di-di-di-di-di-di-di-da-da” less so.
146‘You’re Not Sorry’ (2008)
Imagine Swift doing Eurovision – this is what ‘You’re Not Sorry’ sounds like. Filled with melodramatic piano chords and overdone vocals, it’s a histrionic ballad that you can imagine accompanied with bombastic visuals and a ton of pyro.
145‘Girl At Home’ (2012)
The bubbling ‘Girl at Home’ fuses the driving country of ‘Red’ with bleeping 8-bit sounds, and is a sweet but bland tune.
144‘Come Back… Be Here’ (2012)
A weepy ballad where Swift reminisces over a lost love, this is uneventful – but fair play to Swift for managing to get “nonchalant” into a pop song.
143‘I Want You Back’ (2011)
A cover of The Jackson 5 taken from the from live album ‘Speak Now World Tour – Live’, this 90-second cover is short, sweet and absolutely fine.
142‘The Way I Loved You’ (2008)
A bit of a head-banging country moment, ‘The Way I Love You’ lacks the radio-ready hooks and megawatt moments of Swift’s other tunes.
141‘So It Goes…’ (2017)
An ethereal synth-pop moment laced with EDM and trap, this ‘Reputation’ cut is sleepy filler.
140‘Sweet Escape’ (2011)
This Gwen Stefani cover is deliciously entertaining, with Swift spitting out the tongue-twister pre-chorus of “Cause I’ve been acting like sour milk that fell on the floor / It’s your fault you didn’t shut the refrigerator” and almost nailing it. Taken from the Target DVD version of ‘Speak Now World Tour – Live’, is an intriguing rendition.
139‘This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things’ (2017)
This song was written as a response to the media after they criticised her decision to throw big parties for her pals and get them up on stage during the tour for ‘1989’ – things she considered “nice things”; a powerful sentiment, but an acquired taste.
138‘Haunted’ (2010)
Sounding like it should be accompanying a wild fantasy movie, with over-the-top strings and belted vocals, ‘Haunted’ feels like the younger sibling to Swift’s fairy-tale epics such as ‘Love Story’. They’re fine, but lack the nuance that some of her enchanting, happy ending filled romances boast.
137‘Long Live’ (2010)
A fairly pedestrian song from ‘Speak Now’, ‘Long Live’ is a fairly generic slice.
136‘Ours’ (2010)
With its muted acoustic instrumentals and mawkish lyrics, ‘Speak Now’ is sickly sweet.
135‘Breathe’ feat. Colbie Caillat (2008)
A sleepy, acoustic number that sees Swift teaming up with American singer-songwriter Colbie Caillat, it’s a largely forgettable tune taken from ‘Fearless’.
134‘Drops of Jupiter’ (2011)
Another cover from the ‘Speak Now’ live album, this rendition of Train’s 2001 hit ‘Drops of Jupiter’ is a stripped-back version of the bombastic pop rock song.
133‘…Ready for It?’ (2017)
This slab of industrial pop opens Swift’s ‘Reputation’. With its dubstep wubs, EDM beats and trappy instrumentals, this messy number feels like a tug of war between this collection of different genres.
132‘September’ (2018)
Earth, Wind & Fire, but make it Swifty! Recorded for the Spotify Singles series, this stripped back cover is lovely. Plus it features a typically Swiftian Easter egg, where she changes the opening line of “Do you remember the 21st night of September?” to the 28th night, a cute tribute to her anniversary with boyfriend Joe Alwyn.
131‘This Love’ (2014)
A weepy moment from ‘1989’, ‘This Love’ feels remarkably maudlin when nestled in-between the bevvy of synth-pop bops that Swift’s fifth album holds.
130‘A Place In This World’ (2006)
Written when she was just 13 years old, ‘A Place In This World’, it feels like a glimpse into a Swift’s secret diary. Opening with the wonderfully teenage: “I don’t know what I want, so don’t ask me”, it’s the musical equivalent of telling your mum that she just doesn’t understand you!
129‘Superman’ (2010)
If you were ever imagining what Taylor Swift covering McFly would sound like – this could be it. The cheesy ‘Speak Now’ bonus track is filled with adolescent lyrics (“I watch superman fly away / Come back, I’ll be with you someday”), and is topped off with a pop-punk tinged chorus.
128‘I Heart?’ (2008)
Taken from Swift’s second EP ‘Beautiful Eyes’ – one that was exclusively released in Walmart in the US – this is a lovely country bop.
127‘A Perfectly Good Heart’ (2006)
An absolutely fine slice of country-pop from TayTay’s first album. On ‘A Perfectly Good Heart’ Swift depicts her very first experience of heartbreak. It’s one of her earliest breakup ballads, but quasi-emotive couplets like “It’s not unbroken anymore / How do I get it back the way it was before?” fail to pack the emotional punch some of Swift’s later tunes do.
126‘Untouchable’ (2008)
This cover of rock band Luna Halo’s ‘Untouchable’ is sweet, but largely unexciting.
125‘Jump Then Fall’ (2008)
A bonus track taken from the platinum edition of ‘Fearless’. Swift herself has described the song as “really bouncy and happy and lovey”. It’s an accurate description, as the bouncing banjo-led number is sickly sweet, but lacks much depth.
124‘Sad Beautiful Tragic’ (2012)
A weeper taken from ‘Red’, this gloomy tune sees Swift reflect on a relationship that was a “sad, beautiful, tragic love affair”.
123‘Bette Davis Eyes’ (2011)
A song popularised by Californian singer-songwriter Kim Carnes in 1981, Taylor’s live cover of ‘Bette Davis Eyes’ is nice but innocuous.
122‘Breathless’ (2010)
A uninspired cover of American alt-rockers Better Than Ezra’s ‘Breathless’, Swift performed the tune for Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief in 2010 (with her version later appearing on live album ‘Hope for Haiti Now’).
121‘Look What You Made Me Do’ (2017)
It’s only TayTay sampling Right Said Fred’s ‘I’m Too Sexy’! The bolshy ‘Reputation’ lead single saw Swift giving a massive middle-finger up to the haters, and accompanied her comeback after a year-long hiatus. It impact was huge at the time, but in the meantime ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ feels like a bit of a mis-step.
120‘Crazier’ (2009)
It appeared on the soundtrack for ‘Hannah Montana: The Movie’, and critics said it was the best song in the film. Bad luck, Miley.
119‘Eyes Open’ (2012)
From the soundtrack to The Hunger Games, ‘Eyes Open’ sees Swift go stadium rock. Too bad hair-whipping number’s repetitive chorus begins to grate.
118‘Nashville’ (2011)
A cover of Nashville-based singer-songwriter David Mead’s ‘Nashville’, this cover (taken from the Target exclusive version ‘Speak Now World Tour – Live’; yes, we’re really into the deep-cuts here) is pretty impassioned .
117‘Invisible’ (2006)
On this lacklustre cut from Swift’s eponymous debut album ‘Invisible’, she laments feeling invisible to the boy she fancies. It’s a bleak sentiment, and the emotive instrumentals in ‘Invisible’ mimic this.
116‘Hoax’ (2020)
The least memorable moment from the fantastic ‘Folklore’, this slow, waltzing tune is inoffensive, but lacks excitement.
115‘London Boy’ (2019)
The lyrics to this ‘Lover’ cut are wild. On ‘London Boy’ Swift proudly asserts her love for the nation’s capital, listing her fave places (including Brixton, Shoreditch, Highgate and for some God-forsaken reason “walking Camden Market in the afternoon”). With a bizarre spoken word intro from James Corden and Idris Elba, it’s cringe and weirdly entertaining in equal measures.
114‘Wonderland’ (2014)
It’s Swift does EDM, and it’s total chaos (albeit with a chorus that’ll be frustratingly caught in your head for weeks on end).
113‘Tied Together with a Smile’ (2006)
A bonus track from the debut album, ‘Tied Together With a Smile’ was written the day Swift found out one of her best mates was bulimic. An early indicator of Swift’s impressive turn of phrase (“And you’re tied together with a smile / But you’re coming undone”), it’s a lovely country moment.
112‘Beautiful Eyes’ (2008)
The title track from Swift’s EP of the same name, ‘Beautiful Eyes’ is an underrated stomper from TayTay’s extended discography.
111‘This Is Me Trying’ (2020)
A slow-burner from ‘Folklore’, this soft ballad sees Swift grapple with accepting blame for a crumbling relationship.
110‘My Tears Ricochet’ (2020)
This Jack Antonoff produced tune from ‘Folklore’ is about an “embittered tormentor showing up at the funeral of his fallen object of obsession.” Although fairly unremarkable, it does include the brilliantly Swiftian put-down: “And if I’m dead to you, why are you at the wake?” Ooft.
109‘Me!’ feat. Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco (2019)
A saccharine collaboration with Panic! at the Disco’s Brendon Urie, this semi-irritating (and unbearably catchy) tune is an absolutely fine single from Miss Swift. Although it gained several places in our ranking after Swift removed the “Spelling is fun!” lyric.
108‘Come In With the Rain’ (2008)
‘Come In With The Rain’ sees Taylor showing off the country-pop that defined her early years. It’s a nostalgic snapshot at Taylor’s life before world domination became the main priority. NR
107‘Cold As You’ (2006)
As Shakespeare once wrote in ‘Sonnet 18’ – “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?” If it’s Tay Tay you’re asking, then absolutely not. Instead, this break-up ballad compares thee to a grey, dreary and completely sodden wash-out of a day. EH
106‘Never Grow Up’ (2010)
Taken from ‘Speak Now’, this ballad moment peers out into a dimly lit crowd, and sees Swift dealing out her best life advice for younger fans in particular. “I look out into a crowd every night and I see a lot of girls that are my age and going through exactly the same things as I’m going through,” she’s said. “Every once in a while I look down and I see a little girl who is seven or eight, and I wish I could tell her all of this. There she is becoming who she is going to be and forming her thoughts and dreams and opinions. I wrote this song for those little girls.” EH
105‘Bad Blood’ feat. Kendrick Lamar (2017)
This Kendrick Lamar-featuring cut would have been right at home on Taylor Swift’s villainous ‘Reputation’ – a record on which she embraced her false depictions in the media, and ran with them. Instead, though, it felt like an outlier on ‘1989’. Swift herself said that it’s a song about a friendship with a fellow pop star that turned sour: “She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour,” she told Rolling Stone. “She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me.” EH
104‘Afterglow’ (2019)
It’s a crying shame that the track fails to live up to its title. There’s little that live longs in the memory about this drum-driven number from ‘Lover’. NR
103‘The Other Side of the Door’ (2008)
A slightly slept-on fan favourite, ‘The Other Side of the Door’ features a deliciously dramatic guitar solo and even more melodrama. Like so: “I said, ‘leave’, but all I really want is you to stand outside my window throwing pebbles screaming ‘I’m in love with you’’. Exquisite. EH
102‘Soon You’ll Get Better’ feat. the Chicks (2019)
Featuring country music icons The Chicks, ‘Soon You’ll Get Better’ is one of Swift’s most personal songs; both of her parents have had cancer, and this year the singer confirmed that her mother Andrea has been diagnosed with a brain tumour. It’s a difficult listen precisely because it’s so incredibly honest. “I hate to make this all about me but who am I supposed to talk to?” she asks. “What am I supposed to do if there’s no you?” EH
101‘Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince’ (2019)
A slow burning, electro-pop moment that’s meant for soundtracking a moody walk to the shops in the rain.
100‘Ronan’ (2012)
One of Swift’s most affecting ballads, this song pieces together quotes from a blog by a mother named Maya Thompson, who wrote about her journey with four-year-old son Ronan, who died from a rare cancer called neuroblastoma in 2011. Swift credited his mum as a co-writer and donated all the proceeds to charity. EH
99‘Stay Beautiful’ (2006)
This twanging debut cut is dedicated to the high school crush that Swifty never worked up the courage to ask out; and by the time he moved away, it was too late. “After hearing my songs, a lot of people ask me, `How many boyfriends have you had?’” she said of the song. “And I always tell them that more of my songs come from observation than actual experience. In other words, you don’t have to date someone to write a song about them. This is a song I wrote about a guy I never dated!” EH
98‘Tell Me Why’ (2008)
Despite including the brilliantly searing take-down of “You could write a book on how to ruin someone’s perfect day” this up-tempo bop is errs on the side of humdrum.
97‘The Outside’ (2006)
One of the first songs Swift ever wrote, ‘The Outside’ speaks to the feeling of being a misfit growing up: “So how can I ever try to be better?” she asks, “Nobody ever lets me in”. EH
96‘Getaway Car’ (2017)
This banger from ‘Reputation’ references novelist Charles Dickens, epic war film The Great Escape, a runaway Bonnie and Clyde and even various meta details from Swift’s own romantic life. EH
95‘Mirrorball’ (2020)
In her candid 2020 documentary Miss Americana, Taylor Swift speaks about the struggle of your every move being followed by an audience and remarks that many women, particularly in pop, are “discarded in an elephant graveyard by the time they’re 35.” Broadly, this is what ‘Mirrorball’ seems to be about; balancing her skill for performing with the huge pressure of constant reinvention. “All I do is try, try, try I’m still on that trapeze,” she says, “I’m still trying everything, to keep you looking at me””. EH
94‘Change’ (2008)
Delivered as an official anthem for the 2008 US Olympic Team, here’s a track that sees Swift exploring the idea of overcoming adversity on the road to success. It’s easy to be cynical about it all, but it gave Swift her first US top 10, so maybe that message got through after all. NR
93‘Innocent’ (2010)
Sometimes the best revenge is to take the moral high ground. And performing at the MTV VMAs – where Kanye West infamously snatched the mic from Taylor Swift mid-acceptance speech – Swift appeared to get hers by playing ‘Innocent’. “You’re 32 and still growing up now,” she sings. Guess how old West was when he declared “I’mma let you finish, but…” Yep. EH
92‘Begin Again’ (2012)
Marking one of ‘Red’’s more pointed returns to her country roots, ‘Begin Again is, according to Swift, “about when you’ve gotten through a really bad relationship and you finally dust yourself off and go on that first date after a horrible breakup, and the vulnerability that goes along with all that”. EH
91‘I Know Places’ (2014)
Ahead of making ‘1989’ Swift long harboured ambitions of working with Ryan Tedder – most recognisable as the lead vocalist of One Republic and record producer for everyone from Adele to Lady Gaga. And their eventual collaboration came about on ‘I Know Places’ – a song that explores falling in love amid high pressure fame, and finding places to outrun the cameras. EH
90‘The Lucky One’ (2012)
Speculation orbits around ‘The Lucky One’ – which dissects the more taxing sides of fame that people don’t speak about. “Now it’s big black cars, and Riviera views, and your lover in the foyer doesn’t even know you,” Swift sings, “and your secrets end up splashed on the news front page”. Fans reckon it’s about everyone from Joni Mitchell and Shania Twain to Kim Wilde. Possibly, it could also be a reflection of Swift’s future fears. EH
89‘You Need to Calm Down’ (2019)
Delivering an effective riposte to endless streams of internet trolls can often prove to be the toughest of tasks. It’s testament to Swift then, that she managed to deliver a swift fuck you, all packaged up in the shape of a bonafide banger. Bow down. NR
88‘How You Get the Girl’ (2014)
The 10th track from ‘1989’ is like the less sabotage-hungry answer to Robyn’s ‘Call Your Girlfriend’ – here, Taylor’s full with useful tips for winning an ex back after an unwise dumping. She’s even got a script ready. “And then you say: “I want you for worse or for better, I would wait forever and ever,” she sings, “broke your heart / I’ll put it back together.” EH
87‘New Year’s Day’ (2017)
The groggy clear up that takes place after a raucous New Year’s house party has never sounded so idyllic – despite the fact their entire floor is splattered with glitter and stale old beer spilling out of half-empty bottles, Swift’s just happy to have a worthy clean-up buddy. “I want your midnights,” she sings, “but I’ll be cleaning up bottles with you on New Year’s Day” Sometimes those small, mundane moments are just as romantic. EH
86‘Dress’ (2017)
By a mile the steamiest cut from ‘Reputation’, this slinking song details the pang of secret lust in breathy falsetto. “Carve your name into my bedpost, ‘cause I don’t want you like a best friend,” Swifty pleads. “Only bought this dress so you could take it off.” Get it, girl! EH
85‘Mary’s Song (Oh My My My)’ (2006)
This debut album cut is archetypal vintage Swift, drawing on the people around her for storytelling material. Twanging and country-pop, ‘Mary’s Song (Oh My My My)’ borrows Swift’s next door neighbour – and her long, rock-solid marriage – as a protagonist. “I’ll be 87, you’ll be 89,” she sings wistfully, “I’ll still look at you like the stars that shine in the sky.” EH
84‘Christmas Tree Farm’ (2019)
Sure, it’s cheesier than an explosion at the Kraft factory, but this track sees Taylor successfully using the festive season to look back on her own childhood (she grew up on a Christmas tree farm). Christmas is now Swiftmas. NR
83‘Everything Has Changed’ feat. Ed Sheeran (2012)
Warm, fuzzy, and firmly hanging onto its rose-tinted glasses, this collaboration from ‘Red’ has a cutesy video to match, featuring miniature child versions of the pop stars. EH
82‘Should’ve Said No’ (2006)
“It’s strange to think the songs we used to sing, the smiles, the flowers, everything is gone; yesterday I found out about you,” sings Swift in the opening lines of this debut album cut – which exposes a boyfriend for cheating, and proceeds to rip him apart atop country-rock guitars and a ripper of a string solo. EH
81‘The Last Time’ feat. Gary Lightbody (2012)
On this intensely catchy anthem from ‘Red’, Swift teams up with none other than gruff-vocaled Gary Lightbody from Snow Patrol – lighters in the air, everyone. EH
80‘Starlight’ (2012)
This ‘Red’ cut sees Swift transporting back to the 1940s – inspired by a photo of two loved-up teenagers dancing together. The teenagers in the photograph were actually US senator Bobby Kennedy and his future wife Ethel, and ‘Starlight’ imagines their adventures early on. “I ended up meeting Ethel and going and playing it for her,” she wrote of the song, “and she just loved it,”. EH
79‘The Best Day’ (2009)
R’The Best Day’ is one of Swift’s earliest odes to her mother Andrea. Recalling her happy childhood, it’s a sweet, if somewhat cloying look at the early years of the planet’s biggest pop star. NR
78‘I’m Only Me When I’m With You’ (2006)
Easily one of the more head-banging moments of Swift’s debut – with the hardest slapping violin solo of 2006 – ‘I’m Only Me When I’m with You’ is dedicated to the singer’s best mate Abigail Anderson, who also features in the video. EH
77‘It’s Nice to Have a Friend’ (2019
A minimal intermingling of steel drums and choral backing vocals, ‘It’s Nice to Have a Friend’ arrives near the end of Swift’s ‘Lover’ – and also features some snow-tinted nostalgia, and slightly rogue but highly enjoyable brass solo. EH
76‘The Moment I Knew’ (2012)
Nine years ago, Taylor Swift had a right stinker of a 21st birthday – her ex boyfriend never showed, and left her sobbing beneath the Christmas lights (her birthday is on the 13th December). Still, at least it inspired this deluxe edition ‘Red’ song. EH
75‘Paper Rings’ (2019)
This fidgety cut from ‘Lover’ is Swifty’s big jitterbug moment – singing about her current boyfriend Joe Alwyn, she declares that she’s willing to chuck aside all her magpie tendencies just to be with him. “I like shiny things, but I’d marry you with paper rings,” she sings. Loved up – and thrifty! EH
74‘Only The Young’ (2020)
‘Only The Young’ saw Taylor truly nailing her political colours to the mast for the first time. Tackling gun violence and providing a message of hope for the next generation, Taylor emerged as the activist we all need right now. NR
73‘Treacherous’ (2012)
One of the quieter moments from ‘Red’, ‘Treacherous’ eventually grows to a subtle roar, and details a pairing that’s gradually unravelling like a ball of twine. “All we are is skin and bone, trained to get along / Forever going with the flow,” she sings, “but you’re friction”. EH
72‘Better Than Revenge’ (201)
Across Taylor Swift’s entire back catalogue, ‘Better than Revenge’ is perhaps best suited to soundtracking an angsty high school drama; think along the lines of 10 Things I Hate About You. It has its fair share of cutting one-liners, too. Case in point: “no amount of vintage dresses gives you dignity”. Burn. EH
71‘I Wish You Would’ (2014)
Co-written with frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff, ‘I Wish You Would’ started with a guitar line Antonoff sent to Swift during her Red tour – and it eventually evolved into this slightly Haim-ish pop juggernaut. Lyrically, it tells the story of a heartbroken protagonist who watches her window in the middle of the night and notices that headlights keep flickering past at the same time. “It’s two AM, here we are,” she sings for the big reveal, “I see your face, hear my voice in the dark.” EH
70Stay Stay Stay’ (2012)
If there’s anyone who specialises in nailing the many sides of romance, it’s Tay Tay – case in point, ‘Stay Stay Stay’. The song’s placed immediately after the defiant break-up anthem ‘We Are Never Getting Back Together’ on ‘Red’ – and in many ways, it’s that song’s foil. Atop chronically catchy ukulele, she details a more generous kind of love that’s still worth fighting for. EH
69‘Sweeter Than Fiction’ (2013)
Taken from the soundtrack for the movie One Chance, this John Hughes-channelling tune is a new-wave belter that forecast the shimmering synth-pop of Swift’s fifth album ‘1989’.
68‘False God’ (2019)
A sultry, R&B ballad filled with religious imagery and trap beats, ‘False God’ finds Swift all grown up.
67‘Don’t Blame Me’ (2017)
This thundering, foot-stomping, fist-pumping moment from ‘Reputation’ will make you want to set fire to your ex’s car (in the best possible way).
66‘August’ (2020)
This Jack Antonoff co-write from ‘Folklore’ is a melancholic dream-pop ballad. Part of a trio of songs that Swift has dubbed the Teenage Love Triangle, ‘August’ is the tune that comes from the point of view of the other woman, telling the story of forbidden love.
65‘The Lakes’ (2020)
The ethereal ‘Folklore’ bonus track sees TayTay channel the Lake Poets in a romantic number about love, resilience and the Lake District.
64‘Daylight’ (2019)
The lovely final song on ‘Lover’ is wistful number about healing, hope and healthy new relationships.
63‘Welcome to New York’ (2014)
The opening track on ‘1989’, ‘Welcome to New York’ ushers you into the sleek synth-pop world of Swift’s fifth album. With its bouncing bassline and hand-clapped beats, it’s a bombastic tribute to the Big Apple.
62‘I Forgot That You Existed’ (2019)
There comes a moment while growing up when you just stop caring about what everybody else thinks of you. The fizzing opening track on ‘Lover’ celebrates this, with TayTay rejoicing in the peace and quiet brought on by not giving a shit about the haters.
61‘Hey Stephen’ (2008)
‘Hey Stephen’ is the stuff of gooey rom-coms. “‘Cause I can’t help it if you look like an angel,” Swift sings over warm instrumentation, “can’t help it if I wanna kiss you in the rain”. It’s wonderfully schmaltzy stuff, and comes with a chorus you’ll sing full belt after a Tinder-date-gone-right – just don’t let the date hear you.
60‘I Almost Do’ (2012)
‘I Almost Do’, Swift’s explained, is “about the conflict that you feel when you want to take someone back, and you want to give it another try, but you know you can’t”. Exploring the internal battle between moving forward and looking back, the poignant ballad fuses country-pop with soft-rock, and the result is a brutally honest and quietly powerful song.
59‘I Think He Knows’ (2019)
This sharp-edged, upbeat moment from ‘Lover’ would have stood up well as a single – charting those early will-they-won’t-they moments complete with suggestive sighs. EH
58‘Mad Woman’ (2020)
This ‘Folklore’ track skewers the sexist trope of angry women being branded hysterical. “Every time you call me crazy, I get more crazy,” she claps back, rising to the challenge, “what about that?” EH
57‘Peace’ (2020)
Like much of ‘Folklore’, the sparse ‘Peace’ ponders how much life has changed, and celebrates a partnership strong enough to withstand the soaring highs and painful lows alike. EH
56‘Picture to Burn’ (2006)
Peak debut album angst, ‘Picture to Burn’ is jam-packed with sizzlingly mean one liners. Case in point: “I hate that stupid old pickup truck you never let me drive / You’re a redneck heartbreak who’s really bad at lying”. EH
55‘Fearless’ (2008)
Taylor Swift wrote the title track for her second album while touring her self-titled debut – whisked away from everyday life, the song muses on the perfect rainy first date. “I wanna ask you to dance right there, in the middle of the parking lot,” she says. EH
54‘Seven’ (2020)
Chiming and reflective, this string-adorned ‘Folklore’ track sees Swift hark back to childhood: “please picture me in the trees,” goes the opening line, throwing back to the Pennsylvanian Christmas tree farm where she grew up. It’s a snapshot of being young and carefree while real life gradually creeps into the picture – the song appears to be addressed to a friend who had a difficult upbringing. EH
53‘Call It What You Want’ (2017)
As far as years go, Taylor Swift’s 2016 was relatively tumultuous, featuring the whole ‘Famous’ lyrics debacle feud with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian and two very public break-ups. ‘Call It What You Want’ appears to address the singer weathering that particular series of storms, and finding quiet contentment with partner Joe Alwyn. “Call it what you want,” sings a smitten Swifty: she doesn’t care what people think any more. EH
52‘Death By A Thousand Cuts’ (2019)
Apparently inspired by the 2019 film Someone Great (which in part took influence from Swift’s ‘1989’ closer ‘Clean’) this upbeat track from ‘Lover’ seems to get inside the head of the film’s music journalist protagonist right before she flees heartbreak to another city. “I ask the traffic lights if it’ll be alright,” Swift sings, “they say, “I don’t know”. EH
51‘Dear John’ (2010)
Is ‘Dear John’ about Taylor Swift’s short-lived relationship with the musician John Mayer? Well – John Mayer certainly thinks so: he told Rolling Stone he was “humiliated” by the song, and added that “it was a really lousy thing for her to do.” Tay Tay remained tight-lipped “How presumptuous!” she told New York Daily News. EH
50‘End Game’ feat. Ed Sheeran and Future (2017)
Taylor’s own homage to the R&B-laced slow jam, ‘End Game’ is less spiky than the rest of ‘Reputation’ – instead Swift muses on wanting her relationship to last forever, while Ed Sheeran and Future chip in with punny takes on reputations that precede them. EH
49‘White Horse’ (2008)
The dual-Grammy winning ‘White Horse’ is wonderfully understated moment. Filled with romantic, fairy-tale imagery, it’s run through a realist filter that makes it like the older, more sceptical sister to ‘Love Story’. It’s one of the best Swift heart-break ballads.
48‘Epiphany’ (2020)
The warm, unpretentious ‘Epiphany’ is an exquisite ‘Folklore’ song. Filled with powerful instrumentals that could have fallen off the latest Bon Iver record and Aaron Dessner’s glittering production, it sees Swift go full-on indie.
47‘The Archer’ (2019)
The minimalist The Archer is a meditative moment from ‘Lover’. Filled with ambient synths and soft instrumentals, as Swift discloses her own insecurities in a remarkably vulnerable way.
46‘Holy Ground’ (2012)
This galloping soft-rock moment celebrates whirlwind romances, and comes with a chorus perfect for shouting along to on road trips.
45‘I Don’t Wanna Live Forever’ with Zayn Malik (2017)
Look, it might have come from the soundtrack to the Fifty Shades of Grey sequel; but that doesn’t mean that Taylor’s collab with ex-1D member Zayn isn’t a bit of a banger. All sensual electro-pop and breathless vocals, this sultry number deserved better than the film it was soundtracking.
44‘Betty’ (2020)
This swaying folk-rock tune tells the tale of a cheating boyfriend trying to apologise for his indiscretions is a highlight of ‘Folklore’. With its woozy harmonica riffs and chiming vocals, it’s a beaut.
43‘All You Had to Do Was Stay’ (2014)
A sweltering synth-pop banger that comes off like Carly Rae Jepsen’s ‘Emotion’ meets Lorde’s ‘Melodrama’.
42‘Fifteen’ (2008)
‘Fifteen’ is one of Swift’s greatest ever songwriting moments. The cautionary tale of young love it as a country epic – complete with the utterly shattering line “Abigail gave everything she had to a boy / Who changed his mind and we both cried”.
41‘Back To December’ (2010)
‘Back To December’ is a musical apology, with Swift explaining that she decided to write it as “sometimes you learn a lesson too late and at that point you need to apologise because you were careless,”. With an accompanying orchestra and grandiose instrumentals, it’s unflinching and honest, with Swift taking responsibility and asking for forgiveness after a breakup.
40‘Cornelia Street’ (2019)
A highlight from ‘Lover’, ‘Cornelia Street’ is a dazzling tune that’s made even more powerful in this acoustic version performed in Paris last year.
39‘Safe & Sound’ (2012)
Before Swift took a trip to a metaphorical cabin in the woods for recent album ‘Folklore’, she dabbled in writing indie-folk tunes with ‘Safe & Sound’. Taken from the soundtrack to The Hunger Games, this pretty, stripped-back track is enthralling.
38‘Red’ (2012)
The hair-whipping, chorus-screaming title track of Swift’s fourth album is an adrenaline-charged ride.
37‘Gorgeous’ (2017)
‘Gorgeous’ is about having your head turned. It’s about seeing somebody who is so unbelievably hot that you develop a massive crush, existing partner be damned. It’s the perfect song to soundtrack a particularly juicy episode of Love Island and comes with a killer chorus to-boot.
36‘Today Was A Fairytale’ (2010)
Written for the soundtrack to 2010 film Valentine’s Day, this song was one of the only redeeming moments of the trite rom-com. A classically Swiftian country ballad stuffed full of romantic lyrics, it’s lovely.
35‘Forever & Always’ (2008)
On ‘Forever & Always’ Swift manages to evoke the crushing feeling of a crumbling relationship in under four minutes, but no couplet cuts as deep as the utterly millennial “And I stare at the phone, he still hasn’t called / And then you feel so low you can’t feel nothing at all”.
34‘The Story of Us’ (2010)
Swift was inspired to write ‘The Story of Us’ after running into an ex at an event and both of them trying to ignore the other. A break-neck tune, it’s a catchy nugget of country-pop.
33‘New Romantics’ (2014)
‘New Romantics’ was done dirty. The stomping synth-pop knockout was relegated to bonus track on ‘1989’, when it deserved pride of place. Hell, it should have even been a single! The sparkling success is pure euphoria.
32‘Dancing with Our Hands Tied’ (2017)
This electronic, beat-heavy song from ‘Reputation’ is basically as close as we’ve ever come to a Swiftie club remix.
31‘Invisible String’ (2020)
Filled with unusual turn of phrase (“Green was the colour of the grass / Where I used to read at Centennial Park“), ‘Invisible String’ is a sweet ode to Swift’s past relationships, and how they lead her to where she currently is.
30‘Illicit Affairs’ (2020)
Taken from Swift’s most recent record ‘Folklore’, ‘Illicit Affairs’ is a heart-wrenching story of complicated infidelity. Over scintillating stripped back production courtesy of Jack Antonoff, Swift manages to spin a whole tale of secret meetings, lies and clandestine romance, and the emotional impacts it can have.
29‘Tim McGraw’ (2006)
Swift’s debut single ‘Tim McGraw’ isn’t actually about country legend Tim McGraw, but instead about a boyfriend she had whilst at school who was a senior. In it, she warmly reminisces on their past relationship, with Swift knowing he was going to break up with her when he headed off to uni. It’s pretty emotionally astute stuff for the then-teenage songwriter.
28‘Mean’ (2010)
The dual-Grammy winning celebration of self-empowerment sees Swift slamming bullies over joyous banjo strums, reminding them that: “Someday, I’ll be living in a big old city / And all you’re ever gonna be is mean”.
27’22’ (2014)
Before ’22’ nobody cared when you celebrated your 22nd birthday – but then along came this gargantuan cut of bubble-gum pop, and somehow Swift turned it into a milestone.
26‘Sparks Fly’ (2010)
Swift wrote ‘Sparks Fly’ when she was only 16 years old, when she performed at small bar shows back in the late noughties. A video of one of these SHOWS made it onto the internet and fans started to request she released it. This lead to her reworking it for her third album of the same name, with euphoric results.
25‘Wildest Dreams’ (2014)
Channelling her inner Lana Del Rey, this breathless ‘1989’ moment is a synth-pop beauty.
24‘Speak Now’ (2010
‘Speak Now’ features some of Swift’s most vibrant storytelling. With lyrics that detail a wedding, giving you the full picture of the snotty bride “dressed in a gown shaped like a pastry” and how the groom’s marrying the wrong girl, it’s a brilliantly intricate story.
23‘The Man’ (2019)
A searing take-down of sexist double standards wrapped up in a synth-pop bow, ‘The Man’ sees Swift getting seriously feminist.
22‘You Belong With Me’ (2008)
A country-pop thumper from Swift’s second album ‘Fearless’, Swift was inspired to write ‘You Belong With Me’ after hearing a friend arguing with his girlfriend on the phone. Rotten for him – but we got this catchy number out of it.
21‘Enchanted’ (2010)
‘Enchanted’ is one of Taylor’s most underrated songs. A fairy-tale epic that acts as an elder sibling to ‘Love Story’, it captures the dizzy infatuation of a new romance, with huge swooning instrumentals and a heartfelt chorus.
20‘Exile’ feat. Bon Iver (2020)
2020’s been a strange year and brought with it a ton of surprises – one of these being Taylor Swift’s eighth album, and another that she managed to wrangle Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon for a guest appearance on the cinematic ‘Exile’. The gorgeous duet sees the two singers singing over each other, as the two portray ex-lovers seeing each other after a breakup. It’s an emotive cut, and one of Swift’s most impressive collaborations.
19‘Our Song’ (2006)
Taylor wrote ‘Our Song’ as she needed something to perform at her high school talent show. Built around a jangling banjo riff, with bouncing vocals which see Swift dissect how her and the lad she was dating didn’t have a song, it went down such a treat with her classmates that she stuck it on her debut album. With its enthralling lyrics, that paint a vivid picture of the young couple, it was an early indicator of Swift’s songwriting capabilities.
18‘Shake It Off’ (2014)
There’s no two ways about it: ‘Shake It Off’ is a stone-cold smash. It’s got bolshy brass, several hooks that are catchier than a rash and Tay Tay even does a rap. The uptempo tune ushered in Swift’s sixth album ‘1989’, paving the way for her new era of pop belters – but none of them slapped quite this hard.
17‘Teardrops On My Guitar’ (2007)
Swift’s breakthrough single, ‘Teardrops on My Guitar’ is pure country-crossover star. With its soft guitars, and Swift’s early earnestness, unrequited love has never sounded so good.
16‘Clean’ (2014)
‘Clean’, the Imogen Heap co-written closer to ‘1989’, is an understated moment of clarity. It’s the feeling when you’ve started to move on with your life post-breakup and you realise you haven’t thought about your ex for several weeks, and when you do, you don’t want to key their car. With chiming soft-rock instrumentals, and gorgeous layered vocals, it’s an unfussy song that’s filled with Swift’s impressive turn of phrase, including the particularly devastating: “Ten months sober, I must admit/Just because you’re clean, don’t mean you don’t miss it”.
15‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’ (2012)
There’s a lot of reasons that Swift’s Billboard Hot 100 topping, Grammy-nominated ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’ is excellent. There are the snarky lyrics, the ear-worm guitar riff and the megalithic chorus. But perhaps the best moment in the entire song is the delicious spoken word interlude in the middle-eight, where Swift deadpans: “Ugh, so he calls me up and he’s like, “I still love you” / And I’m like… I mean, this is exhausting, you know?/ Like, we are never getting back together – like, ever.” Wickedly savage.
14‘I Knew You Were Trouble’ (2012)
Back in 2012 things were different. David Cameron was still Prime Minster; Corona was only a type of beer and Taylor Swift experimented with dubstep. ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’ was a bold step for Swift, marking a departure from her trademark country crossover songs, but somehow the genre-melding smasher just works. From the icy kiss-off lyrics that raise a middle finger to fuck-boys everywhere to the thumping dub bass, it’s Swift’s most brilliantly bombastic release.
13‘The 1’ (2020)
“I’m doing good, I’m on some new shit” Taylor begins on ‘The 1’. It’s a punchy way to begin a song, let alone ‘Folklore’. The new shit could be Swift accepting her past fights over her discography, or the indie-folk direction she took for her most recent album. But whatever “new shit” TayTay is on, if it means she makes songs as good as this, we back it.
12‘Lover’ (2019)
The slow-dancing title track of Swift’s seventh album is a celebration of being smugly, head-over-heels in love. Ready-made for waltzing at a wedding, this enchanting, romantic tune is a sepia-tinged dream.
11‘Mine’ (2010)
The lead single from ‘Speak Now’ is pure Swift. In under four minutes Swift manages to spin an expansive story of a girl who’s parents’ broken marriage caused her to put up walls and avoid putting themselves out there – who gradually falls in love and has to deal with the fear of something potentially going wrong. It’s a country-pop epic, with more of a narrative in each verse than an entire Nicholas Sparks novel.
10‘Delicate’ (2019)
This vocoded beauty was a highlight of ‘Reputation’. Whilst the bulk of Swift’s seventh album was bold and brash, ‘Delicate’ offered a gorgeous moment of vulnerability. From the exposed opening (“This ain’t for the best / My reputation’s never been worse, so /You must like me for me…”) to the lush instrumentals that mesh the woozy vocals with tropical twinkles and slinky house beats, ‘Delicate’ is dazzling.
9‘Style’ (2014)
This slice of ’80s pop from ‘1989’ embodies the change in Swift’s sound for her fifth album. Filled with chugging synths, strutting guitar licks and glittering production, it’s an effervescent, hook-laden nugget filled with sleek electronics that dissects an unhealthy on-again off-again relationship (that “never goes out of style”). It’s Swift at her best: clever lyrics? Check! Earworm melodies? Check! A chorus that you want to sing at the top of your lungs? You bet.
8‘State of Grace’ (2012)
Ever wondered what Swift singing a massive arena-rock song would sound like? Well, just listen to ‘State of Grace’ and you’ll find out. The huge, U2-flecked opener to ‘Red’ is filled with guitar reverb and vocals that are meant to be screamed back by a stadium full of fans.
7‘Out Of The Woods’ (2014)
With shimmering indie-tronica-laced production and its anthemic, exhilarating chorus, ‘Out of the Woods’ is another belter from ‘1989’. Written about a high-profile relationship that was cut short due to fear of the media’s reaction to it (Swift explained it “that song touches on a huge sense of anxiety that was, kind of, coursing through that particular relationship”), it’s a breathless, honest depiction of a lost relationship; and one of Swift’s greatest triumphs.
6‘Cruel Summer’ (2019)
‘Cruel Summer’ should have been a single. It could have been the lead single. We all know it’s true; yet it was cast aside for the likes of ‘Me!’ and ‘You Need to Calm Down’. A standout moment on Swift’s seventh album ‘Lover’, this synth-pop bop was co-written with indie legend St Vincent and Jack Antonoff.
It was written about “the feeling of a summer romance, and how often times a summer romance can be layered with all these feelings of pining away and sometimes even secrecy”. Swift recounts the feelings of anxiety and uncertainty that plague a new relationship; before revealing her feelings and finding them reciprocated: “And I scream, ‘For whatever it’s worth/I love you, ain’t that the worst thing you ever heard?’”
It’s the musical version of a perfect romantic comedy ending, complete with a chorus perfect for riding off into the sunset on a lawnmower a la Can’t Buy Me Love.
5‘Love Story’ (2008)
What would you do with a spare 20 minutes? Watch an episode of Friends? Aimlessly scroll through Instagram? Well, if you’re Taylor Swift, you can use that time to write ‘Love Story’. Her 2008 country-pop fairy-tale epic remains one of her biggest hits – climbing charts worldwide and receiving near-constant radio rotation. It’s still one of the biggest-selling songs ever. With its Shakespearean narrative (it sees Swift reinterpret Romeo and Juliet), and huge, megawatt chorus, ‘Love Story’ remains a classic from Swift’s bountiful back catalogue.
4‘Cardigan’ (2020)
The lead single from Swift’s latest record is a swirling amalgam of glittering production, swooning strings with flickering piano, and lyrics that evoke the pain of young love. From the searing “When you are young, they assume you know nothing”, to the heart-wrenching “And when I felt like I was an old cardigan / Under someone’s bed / You put me on and said I was your favourite”, Swift conjures up a story of teenage love and betrayal, all anchored by the Aaron Dessner’s jittery production.
We’ve all felt like someone’s old cardigan at one point in our lives, and Swift stunningly manages to convey these complex mixed emotions – the hurt, jealousy and heartbreak – in a gorgeous folk-laced package.
3‘Blank Space’ (2014)
Swift’s got a lot of chart-smashing pop gems in her armoury, but ‘Blank Space’ is surely one of her crown jewels. This megawatt electro-pop tune sees her most cutting, satirising the media’s perception of her dating life and relationships. Knowingly spitting out wry couplets that hit back at the media’s portrayal of her reputation as a man-eater (“Got a long list of ex lovers / They’ll tell you I’m insane / But I’ve got a blank space, baby / And I’ll write your name”), it’s brilliantly wicked – and it absolutely slaps! A work of art.
2‘The Last Great American Dynasty’ (2020)
Swift’s latest album, ‘Folklore’, saw her write more regularly from the point of view of other people, telling their stories as opposed to her own. ‘The Last Great American Dynasty’ was an intriguing case of this – as Swift depicts the life of American artist and socialite Rebekah Harkness, who had previously owned Swift’s Rhode Island, dubbed ‘Holiday House’. Detailing how Harkness married into a wealthy family, was hated by the town and then blamed for the downfall of the Harkness family (including the death of her husband) , Swift pithily compares her scrutiny in the media to the criticism Harkness has experienced.
It’s an impressive song, managing to communicate a huge amount of Harkness’ life across in only a few minutes; and Swift does all of this and tops it off with a banging chorus.
1‘All Too Well’ (2012)
‘All Too Well’ is Swift’s magnum opus. Beginning life as a deep-cut on ‘Red’, it’s become a favourite of both critics and fans – and there’s good reason for it: it’s the perfect example of Swift’s song-writing skills. On it she movingly conveys the heartbreak of a painful break-up, spinning a tale of lost scarves and autumn days as she jumps between different points – both good and bad – in a relationship.
There’s a focus on small, painful details, which are offset by some of Swift’s best ever couplets: “And you call me up again just to break me like a promise / So casually cruel in the name of being honest” can’t be beaten, can it?. Swift takes you on the entire journey of a relationship, and its masterful – just as we’ve come to expect from her.

Speak the Truth--not mine, sharing from the link

"What we’ll do for each other, how far we’ll go, they’re using that against us"Everything from this site has been taken from the wonderful Speak The Truth on Storify-- HERE
Do you know your J2 history? The story of Jensen and Jared is an epic one. It is at first deceptively simple. But with a wider view, this seemingly small story tells a much larger, more universal one. In that way, it's also an important one. It's one that spans a time of unique change in American culture as social media tools grew, TV became King, fandom ways were integrated into public lexicon, HW powerhouses rose and fell, and a new hope for true equality in Obama's America supplanted the country's long history of intolerance. It's one that showcases how the role of PR can build over time to consume all levels of actors lives, even two guys who first set out to avoid exactly that. It's one that reveals the widening sphere of PR with the advent of social media, celeb blogs, and online fandoms. Fans are no longer immune to being used by PR as tools in the role of creating an illusion and selling an image. Only together in one place do cracks in the veneer and patterns of PR tactics suddenly emerge as the larger picture focuses into sharp view. It's also a story that I hope one day can be told in full by the people who lived it instead of mere spectators who watched from the cheaper seats and speculated from afar. However, human interest pieces begin with a subject. So here it is. I've been a fan of this show for eight long years. As someone with a "librarian mind", I have saved and documented a lot throughout that time, as have others who have helped me along the way. Supernatural, the TV series, I believe, speaks for itself. 160+ episodes have been produced, aired, and immortalized on DVD. However the larger story that encompasses the show, the actors, the crew, the fans, the HW machine, and the subject of its time, remains hidden if not completely erased from documented fan history. Yet it is one that has enraptured many (even those who won't quite publicly admit it). I believe that counts for something. In other fandoms, I am indebted to other fans who came before me who archived events as they occurred for other fans like myself who came along later. As I leave Supernatural fandom for good, I worry that these details, as we observed them, may be lost. There will be other fans, of the show and of the Js, that will come after me. They should know how it went down all those years ago. This here is merely my small act of scrawling on the cave wall of the internet. As far as I know, there exists no complete record of what a J2 fan has experienced in all the years of the show. So what follows is a timeline summarizing the events of all eight years of Supernatural surrounding its two lead co-stars. It's meant to serve as an J2 archive or library, detailing each event with a date, info, pics, tweets, article, links, videos, and quotes. Most of the focus is on J2 and the players around them, but it will cover show changes and larger HW shakeups in later years as it becomes necessary. If a tiny splash of "Time Capsule" feel snuck in, it's because we all have our experiences and sometimes they feel worth telling. There has been an incredible erasure of fan/show history the last couple years, an act that is rather ironic in a fandom built on the concept of urban legends coming to life. In its wake are attempts to rewrite J2 history. There are some people that have worked very hard to make sure this story is as inaccessible as possible to others. They'd rather see it replaced by their own "revisionist" history that best serves their own interests. But this stuff happened. Records of it are out there. Fans experienced it. And in many cases, J2 or other people directly connected to them responded to it. Denying said part of J2 fan history is disingenuous. Believe what you want to believe in the space between, but events that happened have happened. I know some people will not be happy I have put this together. I struggled with the thought myself. Ultimately, I believe their story in between the lines and cracks of this cobbled together timeline is endlessly iconic. It's a story that shouldn't be lost in the dust of internet time. Because its not just them, even though their unique relationship is quite remarkable. It's that their story has something to tell us all. We all have something to learn in the space in between. You read through the cracks of eight years, follow along detail by detail, and it however small allows you to step in their shoes, no matter who you are, or what you originally thought. Just think, how scared does someone have to be, how many pressures must be put on someone from all angles, your advisers, your bosses, your family, your friends, to agree to these measures over time. When an erasure of a genuine human story happens, we all lose. We, ourselves, as a culture lose. Progress loses. (And what are we here for, if not for progress?) That erasure robs us of that example to learn and grow, improve and teach others. Because no one's life is just their own. We all have a part to play in each others' lives. We all have things we can teach and things we can learn. That's never been more true than the global age of the internet. Thus, as someone who has been in a unique position to watch a lot of these events unfold, I couldn't leave fandom in good conscience without leaving this footprint. They say history is written by the winners. Well, that was before the internet. So fair warning, I will use spn_g links in later years. It is impossible to do an exhaustive archive of J2 without it. Like it or not, it's part of J2 fan history and quite an archival resource when so many LJ links have since been deleted. Careful consideration has been given to the source. Priority is given to the most reliable information. Events (e.g. things we've seen with our own eyes pics, videos, quotes, tweets, etc) are all primary, and denoted by a header font and date. All anon ITK ("In-The-Know") info is considered secondary, and only becomes more or less probable depending on how it fits in with the overall timeline. Thus, some events with "more probable" secondhand information, are noted as an addendum by the phrase, "*rumorhasit:". Unsubstantiated gossip has been left out. This archive is done with the utmost respect for both parties. In a way, it is only in the details that the more real human context emerges. This is something lost in the day-to-day celeb gossip and fandom life. It's easier to make snap judgments about an image than about a fully fleshed out person. My hope is that in seeing the totality of their story, readers can find some form of compassion for the subjects at hand. I've taken great pains to make sure that the record that follows is all of public events only. If they've been released on the internet in a public place, and talked about by fans, they are included here. I've written this in a way that I hope can be a resource for all, both for J2 fans who lived it and those who have yet to make sense of the whole story. In the act of putting this together, even I have learned details that I had forgotten or missed. It's almost a decade of details, it's a lot to keep straight, but I hope that in this timeline format, the clearer picture emerges. If it's the first time you're reading this, just take it in stride. But if you're a fan who lived all of this once already, pay special attention to the timing of events and larger patterns. Watch how appearances and big personal news tend to go together with big professional news like movie casting and season renewals. Notice how players like publicists and managers fit into the story along side girlfriends and fiancees and wives. This is how this industry functions, even with a fledgling show on a netlet. It's in this industry that two guys who initially claimed privacy start indulging fans with stories of their personal life. It's in this climate that a TV show built on two actors' chemistry suddenly tampers said chemistry down to nothing in the middle of its seventh season. There are many threads that pop up here, partly why this story is such an important one. Some things are rarely as they appeared at first glance. Other things are exactly how they appeared at first glance. Decide on your own which ones are which. One can look at this as an archive with two distinct parts. The first four years are more a tribute to the little glimpse we got of two guys with an instant bond that captured us all. The next four years are more a testament to how despite an actor's best intentions, HW can still grab you by the shirt collar and suck you dry. Never forget where the real power of any show lies. Not with the people whose creative work you watch every week. It's those at the top. And they are not as "tolerant" or "liberal" as people might like you to believe. The story of J2 is an epic one, but that's not the only reason why it's important. They're also not the first or last to deal with these extreme machinations. As we proceed into 2013, we are reminded over and over again how much our culture has changed since 2005. Since 2008. Even since 2011. How much longer will it take for HW to catch up with the rest of us? I'm indebted to all the fans who helped me in amassing this record, adding their contributions, holding my hand, listening to my complaints, and overall sharing in the J2/Supernatural obsession for good times and bad. This has been simultaneously the easiest and hardest show to be a fan of. But it would have been impossible to follow for eight years if not for the community of amazing people that I shared it with. Some of them may not understand this, many of them will probably not even read this, but I hope that they still know my thanks and appreciation. Schmaultz aside, we've got 8 years of history to get to! So without further ado!

Captain Marvel Review (Minor Spoilers)
I was able to watch Captain Marvel.
If anyone asks... I totally bought a ticket and watched it in a totally real theater that totally exists. I totally did not watch a potato quality version with extra loud advertisements for a gambling website.
I honestly enjoyed it quite a bit.
Forget the controversies.
I am not just saying I liked it because I want to piss off the trolls.
I genuinely enjoyed the heck out of Captain Marvel.
It gave me a similar feeling as watching the original Indiana Jones movies. Fast-paced adventure. Not too serious. Good humor. Great characters. Fun action. A nice uplifting movie to soften some of the sadness from Infinity War.
The first time watching a movie I just let my gut decide. I don’t think too much. I just experience the movie and assess the raw emotional impact when it’s over.
That’s how I watched The Last Jedi. And my gut told me I loved it.
That’s how I watched Captain Marvel. Same thing. I had big smiles all throughout the film.
Some people are saying it’s only “OK.”
I can understand some of the criticisms going around. The thing is... I feel like some people are thinking way too much when watching movies. Turn off your brain! Stop analyzing all the details as they are happening! And leave expectations at the door. That is a surefire recipe for disappointment.
If you go into a movie expecting to dislike it, that can often lead to a self-fulfilling prophecy. And if you have ideas of what the movie should be, or what it should be compared to, all you are going to notice are the things that don’t match what was in your head.
When I see a movie review that is nothing but nitpicks and does not describe anything about how the movie made them feel, I typically say “thank u, next” to that review.
This was a fun romp with some great girl power moments. Not cheesy or forced. Moments that I think young Marvel fans are going to really feel empowered by. Moments that will cause them to get a Captain Marvel costume to hang up next to the Elsa one. Thinking about how much fun these kids are going to have really made this movie that much more special to me.
Pictures like these are already starting to pop up around the internet.
And it does anger me that people want to steal that joy away from young girls. They want to say a movie is bad when it isn’t. They want a character to fade away because... reasons. But money is often louder than a group of trolls, and Captain Marvel had a very successful opening weekend. Possibly $160 million in the US and $455 million worldwide.
Brie Larson was not “stone-faced” or boring. People have been using those talking points since watching 30 seconds of footage from the trailers. Brie was an absolutely delightful intergalactic smartass. The sarcasm was perfect. Her chemistry with Fury was fun and dynamic. Her friendship with Maria Rambeau felt real and her connection to “Lt. Trouble” was adorable. Brie also worked incredibly hard to get in shape and learn how to fight like a warrior. The choreography had this fierce brutality combined with tactical precision. Brie is the entire package and I think she’ll only get better as the character develops.
Also... Samuel L Jackson was just having the time of his life. I think he really enjoyed playing 25 years younger. He didn’t have to play Fury with a giant chip on his shoulder. He got to fight some bad guys, play with kitties, and crack wise about alien junk.
This was a great movie. Maybe not the best Marvel movie ever made. But I think it stands up to other Marvel origin stories just fine.
I give it an honest-to-goodness 4 out of 5 Froggies.
I know not every movie connects with every person. I’m not saying there aren’t going to be people who genuinely did not enjoy it. But I think the absolute lowest anyone would rate this (if they were being completely honest) would be 2.5. Maybe a 2 if they don’t like superhero movies and were dragged to see this. Definitely not 1/2 a freakin’ star as many trolls are rating it.

Apocalypse Now (1979); AFI #30
The next movie on the AFI list that we watched was the famous Vietnam Era war film, Apocalypse Now (1979). Even though the movie only received lukewarm reviews on release and was a modest success, the movie is now considered a classic being ranked highly on the AFI film registry (#28 and #30 a decade later), the Sight and Sound Poll (#12), and #6 on a director’s poll of the greatest films of all time. There was some initial recognition as the movie was nominated for 8 Academy Awards and took home 2 for Best Cinematography and Best Sound and both were well deserved. There was actually quite a bit to the making (and almost not making) of this film that I would like to discuss, but first standard brief summary:
SPOILERS!!! You all should know by now but I don’t want hate mail for neglecting to mention it.
The story is really about two people at its core: a Special Ops Officer named Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando) goes crazy when entrenched in Vietnam and starts killing civilians and anyone who doesn’t agree with him. To stop Kurtz, a specialized troop named Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) is sent down a river through Vietnam and into Cambodia to kill the rogue Kurtz with “extreme prejudice.”
The movie begins when Captain Willard is recruited and then escorted to the mouth of a river that will take him to Kurtz. His escort is the air cavalry, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Kilgore (Robert Duvall), who fly into a beach possessed by Viet Cong. Kilgore picks this point of entry because he is a surfing fan and wants that specific beach so he can have an opportunity to catch some waves. It does not go well and he calls in a napalm strike on the tree line of the beach. This is when Kilgore says his famous phrase, “I love the smell of napalm in the morning.”
Willard takes a small river patrol boat to go up that river with a small group. The boat members are Mr. Clean (Laurence Fishburne), Lance (Sam Bottoms), Chef (Frederic Forrest), and Chief (Albert Hall). The boat goes down the river and runs into increasingly strange situations. There is a USO show, a standard boat search that goes very wrong, and a bridge outpost that is build every day and blown up every night.
Not everyone on the boat survives, but the remaining members make it to the end of the river to be met by a group of jungle natives and soldiers that all worship Kurtz like a god. There are dead bodies (and body parts) everywhere to show the madness of Kurtz and his soldiers. Willard realizes that he respects Kurtz but will have to kill him.
Willard is taken by the group and held prisoner, but Kurtz likes him and allows him to roam around. After an undetermined about of time, Willard uses the cover of a ritual bull slaughter to assassinate Kurtz with a machete. Willard then goes back to his boat with the one surviving crewman and leaves. The end.
This seems like a really short summary for a war epic that lasts for 170 minutes in the short version and over 200 in the extended versions, but very little actually happens in the film. It is a whole lot of voice over, 80s keyboard ambience music, and shots of a boat going down a river. It is supposed to be a film about the decent into madness as Willard gets further from the militarized Kilgore and closer to the vigilante Kurtz. It is hard to really show and not tell emotions of gradual loss of sanity and so there is a lot (I mean a whole lot) of 3rd person narrative.
I will admit that I am much more of a fan of the story behind the film because almost everything went wrong. The movie was originally set to be directed by George Lucas and have the lead played by Steve McQueen. This did not work out because McQueen did not want to go to the jungle for 4 months. Neither did Jack Nicholson, Robert Redford, Clint Eastwood, or Al Pacino. Coppola took over the job of director and sank some of his own money into the project to get it going since Lucas was busy with Star Wars when the film had accumulated some budget and Harvey Keitel was chosen as the lead. Coppola did not like the character that Keitel tried to give the role of Willard so he was replace with Martin Sheen. It felt like things were good at this point but it really went downhill from there.
The movie had not been completely written and was based on Joseph Conrad’s novella Heart of Darkness (which really doesn’t have an end) and it becomes evident as the movie goes on. The initial attack on the beach that is lead by the helicopters of Kilgore is a scenic wonder and one of the most cinematic things I have seen. The war horrors that are portrayed are brutal and disassociation that Kilgore has from what he is doing and what is going on around him is spectacular. Duvall really earned his nomination for Best Supporting Actor because he steals every scene that he is in.
The movie was shot in the Philippines and there were many problems with safety for the crew since there was civil unrest and martial law declared in the area that filming was taking place. It was very dangerous and the president of the country at the time did not protect the members of the project like was promised. It continued to get worse because the jungle is very dangerous and the number of military/police in the filming escort was few to none.
The heat and general environment is very harsh and people who have not grown accustomed to it suffer greatly. All of the crew had constant illnesses and injuries general anxiety. Charlie Sheen had a heart attack and his brother was shipped in to do some of the distance and dark shots. The crew got super antsy and started to do a lot of drinking and drug use with Dennis Hopper in the lead, even getting the teenaged Lawrence Fishburne addicted to heroine. Through all of this, the shoot was way over budget due to weather delays, injuries, and the fact that the script of the movie had not been finished.
To top off everything off, Marlon Brando finally showed up and he was 90 lbs overweight, drunk, and took an immediate hatred towards everybody. He still had a chip on his shoulder about the pay for The Godfather and was there to screw things up for Coppola. The director was reported to be having almost daily anxiety attacks towards the end of the shoot. The toll became apparent since the direct lost almost 100 lbs. during the shoot from stress and general sickness.
Everything was finally scrapped together and it became apparent that the whole thing was a fiasco. People almost died. The planned out five month shoot ended up taking almost fifteen months. The script was being written while the shoot was occurred. The weather and jungle had done a lot of damage to the tape and the lack of environmental control meant that there was a lot of voice over work. Coppola went bankrupt investing his own money into the project and a lot of it went to a highly overpaid and generally scheming Marlon Brando for a truly terrible performance.
A total of over 200 hours of film was edited down to a film that lasted around 160 minutes and it took 3 years to do. I have been disappointed by the film every time that I have watched it because it is slow and I really hate the sci-fi music and constant voice overs. I love the characters at the beginning and I dislike the new people more at more as the movie progresses. I know that it is supposed to get more and more crazy and unrealistic as the boat progresses down the river, but to me it is like watching somebody that you like get drunk over an evening and turn into an annoying spectacle.
I want to note that this movie seems to be most favored by directors and others who are in the film business. People who have been on set realize how difficult it was to do the project and that the movie is as any good is phenomenal. Despite the lack of a real ending, the movie does have a definite plot and it follows the narrative almost like the filming was a research project and all of the data was combed to find a story. The film is too long and kind of boring for me, but I can recognize that there was some aspects of genius in the making. In my opinion, none of those aspects came from Marlon Brando.
This series is supposed to be objective so I will deal with the normal questions from my opinion and from a film standpoint. Should this film be on AFI list? I would so definitely from a film standpoint because it is a lesson about how a professional film can be made despite everything going wrong and it is a directorial and editing achievement like no other movie I know. The production wanted a realistic descent into madness in a war time situation and that is exactly what is on the tape. I personally don’t find it as interesting because of the lack of real character development outside of Willard and Kurtz, but I am just one person with my personal tastes and I recognize the accomplishment. Would I recommend it? I think it is good to see and there are a lot of things to learn from the filming. It is well liked generally speaking so I would not dissuade somebody who wanted to watch. I would not actively search this out. It is very long and is extremely boring and weird (not interesting weird) for a lot of the movie and Brando, Hopper, and Bottoms all play parts that just annoy me. I would watch the film as far as Kilgore is involved (first 45 minutes) and then I would stop it there.
Side note: I would highly recommend Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’ s Apocalypse (1991), which is a documentary directed by Eleanor Coppola and shows the struggle throughout the making of Apocalypse Now. Really gives a an idea of how stressful and dangerous the whole situation and it also shows what a real jerk Marlon Brando was being during the shoot.

Goals are: read one hundred books this year (on track, currently at 76), finish five video games (FIN), write something novel-length (not so much) and write something original (technically done? don’t know if I want to count a snippet that didn’t even hit 1k). These last two goals CAN be combined (I might try NaNo this year, so we will see).

In These Frozen and Silent Nights by beethechange | Buzzfeed Unsolved | Ryan/Shane | “You know me,” Shane says, “I love a good cabin. I’m a cabinhead.”“I’ll show you cabin head,” Ryan rebuts without thinking, and then he turns his face into the pillow to stifle a nervous snicker. “Oh shit, wait, that’s—”
Warm My Bones by blacktofade | Buzzfeed Unsolved | Ryan/Shane | 12k | Shane isn't meant to go into heat, but he does.
and only then we'll know if it was worth to become a ghost by Spooks | Buzzfeed Unsolved | Ryan/Shane | 8k | It has never been easy, convincing Shane of the existence of the supernatural. It doesn't become incredibly much easier once Ryan becomes a ghost himself.
#blessed by thehoyden | Buzzfeed Unsolved | Ryan/Shane | 9k | Of course Shane would rather not work; he’d like it to be like the good old days, and who wouldn’t? But a demon’s gotta eat, and he can’t even get a discount on his rent because it turns out it’s a lot harder to influence faceless companies with ominous dreams. Ergo: gainful employment at Buzzfeed.
i think i'm still turning out by the_tenerife_sea | Buzzfeed Unsolved | Ryan/Shane | 6k | Shane is starting to think Ryan is using him for his baby, considering how much he’s already talked her up to all of their coworkers and friends.
never tell me the odds by Wildehack (tyleet) | Wolf 359 | Doug/Hera | 9k | “I tried Star Wars," he says, adjusting the phone under his neck, "and it was way underwhelming.”
Alien Reacharound by Edgelord (lostlikeme) | Invader Zim | Zadr | 3k | “You’re telling me the only way I can get back into my body is some kind of…” Dib gesticulates while he searches for the right words. “Alien reacharound?”
Find Me Somebody by raiining | Good Omens | Adam/Warlock | 11k | “You left me,” he said. “You both left me, for him. And I can’t even blame you, because I’d have left me for him too.”
flirting with fire by brawlite | Stranger Things | Harringrove | 6k | WIP | Steve's a cop, Billy's a firefighter. It's not a grudge, it's just a regular old small town rivalry.
and you're trying not to tell him by lymricks | Stranger Things | Harringrove | 4k | Whatever. They don’t talk, is the point, and Billy doesn’t need to finish all these big, deep, tragic sentences in his head. He needs to know if Harrington can’t swim. For lifeguard reasons. It’s his job, all right?
See Your Colors by lj_todd | The Dark Tower | Roland/Walter | 2k | The first time Roland laid eyes on Walter was the first time he saw color.
Straight Martinis by dreamfleet, mezmerize | Kingdom Hearts | Axel/Roxas | 5k | The obvious choice. (Or, cocktail parties are boring and hot waiters are fantastic distractions.)
September
gold, when you find me by mmtion | The Flash | Iris/Barry | 53k | It's not that Iris hates The Flash, per say - more that she hates writing about The Streak in a weekly, pun-heavy comic based on The Flash.
From friends to this by Ever-so-reylo (Ever_So_Reylo) | Star Wars | Reylo | 3.6k | Ben has never been good with words; Rey, it seems, doesn’t mind learning his language.
wear it well by sarcasticfishes | Buzzfeed Unsolved | Ryan/Sara, Shane/Sara | 5k | “Are Ryan and I dating? Or— something?”Shane looks up from his paperback, an eyebrow raised. “Babe I think you’re asking the wrong person.”
never gets old by brawls (brawlite), ToAStranger | Stranger Things | Harringrove | 31k | WIP | Falling in love with a cam boy named KingSteve isn't the smartest thing Billy Hargrove has ever done, nor is it the most healthy -- but the good choice is rarely ever the fun choice, and Billy is all about living life fast and loose.
Gift Trapped by andavs | Teen Wolf | Sterek | 19k | There was a massive box, wrapped up prettily with red paper and a green bow, totally eclipsing the small Christmas tree Laura set up on his coffee table. The thudding heartbeat was coming from inside.
To the Sun by blacktofade | Buzzfeed Unsolved | Ryan/Shane/Sara | 17k | Life is weird. Ten years after Unsolved ends, Shane’s married with a kid and Ryan accidentally bumps into him at a gas station in Illinois.
Tag Team by blacktofade | Buzzfeed Unsolved | Ryan/Shane/Sara | 14k | Ryan participates in a charity date auction, much to his chagrin. Sara and Shane try to help.

only then i am human, only then i am clean by Macremae | EOS 10 | Ryan/Akmazian | 4k | There had never seemed to be a reason why everyone on station wanted to bang the living daylights out of Ryan. It was just... a thing. Space is black, stars are bright, and Ryan Dalias is attractive to literally everyone. The universe continues as normal.Except now it's laughing it's ass off, because turns out there was a reason after all.
(Almost Cool by blacktofade | Buzzfeed Unsolved | Ryan/Shane | 30k | While filming the Yuma Territorial Prison episode, Shane gets bitten by what he thinks is a bat. Spoiler alert: it's not.)
low lays the devil by Spooks (agonizer) | Buzzfeed Unsolved | Ryan/Shane | 19k | Keeping Ryan Bergara alive and safe is a full-time job, and Shane Madej has his work cut out for him.
Scratch by L1av | DBH | Hankcon | 71k | There's a virus killing androids. Hank and Connor are tasked with finding out what it is and why it's being made. When the virus is unwillingly uploaded into Connor's system, he learns there may be a desperate reason why androids want it. He can feel pain. And he likes it.
Ask a Compelling Question by TeamHPForever | The Magnus Archives | Martin/Jon Sims | 2k | “What are you thinking about?” Jon asks, his voice edged into a snap.Martin’s mouth opens and, entirely without his permission, words spill out. “I was thinking about what it would be like to kiss you.”
a clean break by Wildehack (tyleet) | The Magnus Archives | Georgie/Melanie | 1k | Georgie’s phone rings at work, and she almost doesn’t answer it.
ways to save the world by Wildehack (tyleet) | The Magnus Archives | Martin/Jonathan | 19k | “I left you,” Martin says softly.
Where Airy Voices Lead by Harvey_King (Delphi) | The Magnus Archives | Martin/Jon | 4k | Five unsubstantiated encounters between Martin Blackwood and Jonathan Sims, and one that was captured on audio cassette.
the shape of your comfort, molded with care by ivelostmyspectacles | The Magnus Archives | Martin/Jon | 6k | “You didn’t like the sex, did you?”
Out Of His System by platoapproved | Raven Cycle | Noah/Ronan, Kavinsky/Ronan | 2k | Noah gives Ronan a quick and nasty handjob while dirty talking to him about Kavinsky, because that's what friends are for.
