at some point towards the end of the manga i was spoiled for the fact that ogata dies, but not how, and really that spoiler was just confirmation for what i already knew. when ogata survived losing his eye i knew that his story was going to end with him dying. i don't think anything could have prepared me for 310 though. it's such a brilliant, gut wrenching, and fitting end to his story. i really hope the anime (and presumably the live action at some point) does it justice

Chapter 310 is such a masterpiece. Reading it for the the first time had me absolutely spinning with emotion. I think it was brilliant that as Ogata is succumbing to the poison, we get all these flashbacks to moments we've seen himself tell all these truths he wanted to avoid. It's just perfect! The last panel, with him as a kid, telling himself that 'it's such a relief' was what broke me and made me sob uncontrollably.

I will say, this chapter will be the one chapter I will transpose the scanlation text onto cause VIZ really did a horrible job translating it. There's a gut punch of a line that VIZ fumbled, and I will take the extra time to make these edits because it feels worth it.

I am really excited to see how the anime does this scene, especially cause like I wanna hear what baby Ogata's voice will sound like. Also Kenjiro Tsuda will absolutely decimate us with his performance, we all know this.

Ao no Flag (SERIES FINALE SPOILERS!!)

Seriously, don’t read this if you are planning to read Ao no Flag. That being said, go read the manga now!!

Finally finished reading Ao no Flag and I have so many feelings. Non-coherent, rambly, messy feelings. I was looking at reactions online and what mainly boggles me about the reactions to the final 2 chapters is people being “how is Taichi suddenly gay??” My friend living on this big planet he never was (he’s bi). He most likely just realized it later in life. Did the events of his 3rd HS year help him figure it out? Heck yes. Is he suddenly bi? No.

Not all queer people pop out into this world and instantly know they are queer. Heck, it took me 23 years to figure that out. It’s not like Taichi instantly realized he likes Touma and started dating him. He knew Touma mattered to him somehow, but it took him multiple years to realize how, as evident by him maybe starting his relationship with Touma after 5 years when Touma contacted them all. He gained life experience and grew.

People go through a lot of learning, unlearning and growing. Especially if you are outside of societal expectations and norms. Taichi grew up learning to and wanting to blend in with society. “Be normal, don’t stand out too much”. Add to that low self-confidence and you feel stuck. Feel like there is only black and white. only one right answer to life. It can be very difficult to look out of this dark box, trust me, I had a tough time and sometimes still do. But it feels like Taichi thought and thought and pondered even back in high school and came to the decisions that he did.

And isn’t that what the series is about? growing as a person, making mistakes, learning, allowing yourself to be visible and vulnerable, and eventually, making choices, even if they don’t make sense to anyone else, and continuing to do so?

These two pages really hit me hard and I was wondering why. And then it hit me. This is possibly the happiest I’ve seen Taichi be since his childhood. Like genuinely happy. He’s reached max happiness points and is sharing those with Touma. He’s made his choices, and he’s happy. You can and are allowed to choose what or who makes you happy.

That’s all that matters.

I love the way that, in addition to his origin story with his over-sized sword and the scar on his nose, the flashbacks to Guts's childhood show how much of his insane work ethic and reckless self-endangering abandonment in battle were all kinda ingrained into him by his craving for attention and approval from shitty father figure, Gambino.

Random nice mercenary guy: "Don't overexert yourself, kid. Just do what's needed. 'Cause if you die, you lose everything."

Gambino: "It's your first battle. Work hard!"

Guts: [throws himself into battle so hard he nearly dies multiple times, fixating on pleasing Gambino the entire time]

Gambino: "C'mon, hurry up! Work! Work!"

Guts: [gives Gambino his entire earnings, Gambino tosses him back a single coin]

Guts: [more motivated by this one mild bit of encouragement than anything he's ever experienced before in his life]

#it's difficult to post berserk meta because i feel like the manga is often so well-written and well put together #that every panel is important and it's hard to leave anything out - and i'll end up just reposting the entire chapter instead #like this is leaving out all the stuff before that leading up to this moment #where gambino is either neglectful or cruel to guts almost all the time - giving him the scar on his nose in a rage #yet also now and then tossing him a bone like giving him medicine for his wounds - and as minimal as that 'kindness' is #it's the only caring attention guts actually ever receives and he's so starved for it that it keeps him striving to earn more :(#and how the other members of the band don't like how gambino treats guts yet also do not step up to raise him themselves either #and whisper together about their resentment of him at night when he's left alone to fend for himself #AND then i am also leaving out the bits after that where gambino immediately goes and does the worst thing possible to guts too...#renting him to donavan... yet another awful formative experience for the kid #just constantly reinforcing to guts that he's got nobody but himself and his sword for his sense of protection and value and purpose #but showing that those tiny scraps of kindness and praise were basically keeping him alive and what he really wanted underneath too #it's just extremely well-done and so good at showing exactly why guts is the way that he is later on #and why when griffith started paying attention to him and valuing him as a person #in addition to putting him to work in the ways he was most familiar and comfortable with - it was basically like crack for him as well #berserk #berserk spoilers #p

Ok so Kana loves Aqua as he is and really does not want anything in return from Aqua, she doesn't put him in a pedestal or idolizes him intensely. To her he's an idiot and an idiot that she has a crush on. She banters w him, calls him a gloomy narcissist, and asks him to tell her jokes. To Aqua, Kana is that window to normalcy that he has, he's just a teenager w her and he doesn't have to act or walk in eggshells w her. He shines a light on her darkest moments and she is his light. They can be who they are with each other, Kana doesn't have to hold her tongue, Aqua doesn't have to act around her. In fact when Aqua is asked by Kana if he hates her he answers "It's actually the opposite.." like sir who are you fooling🤨🤨

Adding smth to this, Kana comes home to Aqua's sweet nothings. Aka Aqua would never demand perfection from Kana. Kana doesn't have to pressure herself to reach Aqua's expectations, she's perfect as she is.
