Tom Bombadil is the Master. No one has ever caught old Tom walking in the forest, wading in the water, leaping on the hill-tops under light and shadow. He has no fear. Tom Bombadil is master.

Old Tom Bombadil | Bear McCreary, Composer
Now let the song begin! Let us sing together! Of sun, stars, moon and mist, rain and cloudy weather, Light on the budding leaf, dew on the feather, Wind on the open hill, bells on the heather. Slender as the willow-wand, clearer than clear water. Reed by the living pool, fair River-Daughter. Spring time and summer time, and spring again after. Wind on the waterfall, and the leaf's laughter. Old Tom Bombadil is a merry fellow; Bright blue his jacket is, and his boots are yellow. Reeds by the shady pool, lilies on the water. Old Tom Bombadil and the River-Daughter! Slender as the willow-wand, clearer than clear water. Reed by the living pool, fair River-Daughter. Spring time and summer time, and spring again after. Wind on the waterfall, and the leaf's laughter. Slender as the willow-wand, clearer than clear water. Reed by the living pool, fair River-Daughter. Spring time and summer time, and spring again after. Wind on the waterfall, and the leaf's laughter. Old Tom Bombadil is a merry fellow...

14th November 2023 Writings

Excerpt from: Changes in the Archipelago
“Not yet?” Snotlout asked.
“We haven’t had a closer look yet,” Astrid responded.
“Then why are we wasting time?” Snotlout asked.
“We’re not,” Hiccup said. “I wanted to round up everyone.”
“Right…”
Soon all of them were flying out to the ship.
“If is from Miklagard, we can totally take it,” Snotlout declared.
“No, we can’t,” Fishlegs objected.
“It would be foolhardy.”

Excerpt from: Lady Me’s Quandry
“Not Britain, nor the 20th or 21st Centuries,” she said to the TARDIS as she set a random course.
The TARDIS gave a sound as if she agreed with her. She then set the ship in motion.
It didn’t take long for them to arrive somewhere. “Let’s see,” Lady Me murmured as she switched on the Scanner.
Indeed, it wasn’t Britain, nor the 20th or 21st Centuries. “Faroe Islands, 19th Century,” she mused. It wasn’t very far off at all. She suspected that if she tried again, it would still be somewhere in Western Europe in the later part of the Second Millennium. Therefore she emerged from the ship into the dimly lit streets of Torshavn. Nothing looked to be out of the ordinary. ‘But then at this time I was already hiding out on the Street.’
Something soon happened.

Excerpt from: Spider Quinn
“Right…” Quinn considered. She also considered just quitting the Fashion Club and telling Sandi to leave. What Daria had said in Freemont about them solving crime together flashed through her mind. ‘Not yet, give her a chance.’ She breathed deeply, and pulled down the turtleneck, showing her, along with Stacy and Tiffany, the zit.
“Oh, I see,” Sandi said.
“So, I had to hide it,” Quinn said.
“Of course,” Sandi said.
“Quinn, I'm so happy you're still one of us,” Stacy said.
“Gosh, Stacy, what did you think?” Quinn asked.
“Really,” Tiffany added.
“Quinn's right, Stacy. Just because she was acting completely weird and not confiding in her dearest, most loyal friends is no reason to decide she'd finally given up her sad charade and revealed herself as a two-faced, little…” Sandi trailed off as Quinn gave an intense glare.
‘How long?’ Quinn wondered, again.
“Meeting ended,” Sandi said.
“6:57. The shortest yet,” Stacy responded.
Unknown to Quinn and the others, Daria had overheard Stacy saying ‘I'm so happy you're still one of us,’ as she had walked by. Therefore she called Jane about her suspicion.
“Come on, not even aliens would give the planet to the Fashion Club. You're getting paranoid,” Jane responded.
“I'm not talking about aliens. But there's something out there. Something stupid.”
“You get rattled too easily,” Jane responded, then changed her tone. “By the way, can you come over here right now? I'm really scared.”
“I see. And to what do I owe this mood swing?” Daria asked.
“It's Trent's song. You gotta listen and tell me if it's getting more cheerful.”
“Now who's paranoid?”
“Come on, I'll order a pizza. And don’t tell your mother where you’re going, I don’t want her getting all motherly.”
“Right away.”

Excerpt from: In the House of Tom Bombadil
“We heard news of you, and heard that you were wandering. We guessed that you’d come ere long down to the water: all paths lead that way, down to Withywindle. Old grey Willow-man, he’s a mighty singer; and it’s hard for little folk to escape his cunning mazes. But Tom had an errand there, that he dared not hinder.” He then sang a song of his errand and of how he had met Goldberry long ago.
Tom had fallen silent, but Frodo couldn’t resist asking one more question. “Tell us, Master, about the Willow-man. What is he? I have never heard of him before.”
“No, don’t!” Merry and Pippin said together.
“That is right,” Tom said. “Now is the time for resting. Some things are ill to hear while the world is in shadow. Sleep until the morning light, rest on the pillow!”

I was re-reading The Two Towers last month and I got so sad about Gollum that I had to take like three breaks to get through it. This is new. I'm becoming even more all-in and uncompromising on my soft, compassionate Redemption and Live bullshit*.

“A shadow came out of dark places far away, and the bones were stirred in the mounds. Barrow-wights walked in the hollow places with a clink of rings on cold fingers, and gold chains in the wind. Stone rings grinned out of the ground like broken teeth in the moonlight.”

Pinkie Pie is just Tom Bombadil but as a horse.
Yes, it is that slow of a day on Tumblr Dot Com.
But listen. Hear me out. They both possess impressive power on what is likely an unknowably large scale, but are just too silly to realize this power or use it to it's fullest potential.
They are the same character. You cannot convince me otherwise.
Tell me Pinkie Pie wouldn't be perfectly at home frolicking through a forest picking flowers for her husband, Weird Al, and tell me that if she happened upon two other ponies stuck in a tree she wouldn't scold that tree, whack it with a stick, and get said tree to let go of those two ponies, whom she would then immediately invite to a dinner party as if nothing had happened and convincing a tree to move wasn't at all impressive or out of the ordinary.

been a rough health week. so much so that I didn't turn my computer on for 6 days. I did however become reacquainted with The Fellowship of the Ring (book). I read The Hobbit and the first two of the trilogy back when I was a flight attendant in 2019, but the last few of chapters in The Two Towers sucked and put me off of finishing the series as a whole. Can't even remember if I finished the last pages of the second book.
That's all to say I'm having a great time reading them now. Like genuinely excited to wake up so I can continue to read what happens next.

"I Am No Weather Master!" - Tom Bombadil Commission - by Pedro Morán
Tom Bombadil commission for a private client. Although he is not my favorite character from The Lord of the Rings, I love the idea of the funny man in the woods who hides incredible powers and could be any powerful entity, from a hero of yore to a god in disguise. I really enjoyed painting him and the forest background.

Actual March Reads
Wandering by Loren G. Warnemuende: Too many details slow down the story, but the bones of a good story are here. I liked the Old Testament prophet vibes.
Spe Salvi by Pope Benedict XVI: Beautiful. Mind-blowing. I need to reread it.
Murder in the Cathedral by T.S. Eliot: Excellent Ash Wednesday read. Made much more sense now that I know more about English history. Can't remember all that much by now, though.
The Light Princess by George Macdonald: A nice little fairy tale (and another nice Ash Wednesday read). The beginning is silly, but the ending is still gorgeous.
Promise by Loren G. Warnemuende: I'm not sure I've ever read a fairy tale retelling that had so many characters and subplots. It worked well, and despite the writing style's flaws, was the perfect type of fantasy for Lent. It was very relaxing to sink into the world. The ending became a ridiculously overcomplicated mix of magical jargon, though.
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett: Perfect early-spring atmosphere. The theology was much weirder and more prominent than I remembered.
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins: By golly, this woman knows how to craft a good story. (Reading it immediately before Sunrise was the perfect decision.)
Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins: An excellent prequel. Loved the characters, loved how the world was expanded. Unlike in Ballad, there are no revelations here that I prefer to ignore.
Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins: Reading this immediately after Sunrise was the perfect decision. The prequel vastly improves the District 12 parts of the story. I liked this book much better than I ever have. The ending got too suicidal and soured the experience, but otherwise, it was excellent.
Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins: Wow, this is a good book. Possibly the best ending in all of fiction.
The Heir and the Spare by Kate Stradling: This confirmed this is one of my favorite books. Not because of any innate quality, but because it's as comfortable and familiar as those childhood favorites I reread over and over. I always love a politically-focused non-magical fantasy, and Stradling writes in a way that makes me feel a bit like I'm reading my own stories (without me actually having to write it). The reading experience is very relaxing (despite the dark aspects).
The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien: This book is Good. This book is Beautiful. This book is Sad. All three of those things hit me harder than ever before.
Potential March Reads
Wandering by Loren G. Warnemunde
Spe Salvi by Pope Benedict XVI
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
The Heir and the Spare by Kate Stradling (plus Maid and Minstrel and/or Brine and Bone)
The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
The Light Princess by George Macdonald
The Hunger Games trilogy (and possible Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins)

there's many changes the trilogy made for better or worse but one i love so deeply is the 'far green country' section. like in the book it's a dream sequence while frodo is at tom bombadil's house and its signficance is unclear until the very end of rotk when frodo sets sail 🥺 absolutely gorgeous. chef's kiss. but also what peter j and team did? repurposing it for the storming of minas tirith? for an emotive one-on-one between gandalf and pippin with terror and death looming on all sides? the sounds of war assailing them? godddd. the intimacy of the dialogue. the all-too human fear. "i didn't think it would end this way..." "end? no, the journey doesn't end here," "death is just another path, one that we all must take". the comfort of gandalf's words, peace and acceptance and humility and strength amongst such terror. "the grey curtain of this world rolls back and all turns to silver glass... and then you see it..." "what, gandalf? see what? "white shores ... and beyond ... a far green country under a swift sunrise". "well that isn't so bad" "no... no, it isn't". hope in all the hopelessness. i just think it's such stunning stuff
