every time i do the lockpicking minigame in starfield i think abt hbomb's deus ex video when he talks abt how everything is the hacking minigame
i'm someone who enjoys the fallout hacking minigame for the most part and i don't mind starfield's lockpicking but jfc eveything is the lockpicking minigame
im lockpicking open this computer and this door and that safe ill lockpick open your wife if i can
#like i agree with the point that it sucks to need to have the skill level to open a lock and then you also gotta olay this minigame#worse in skyrim i think bc you dont benefit that much from lockpicking perks#in starfield it just feels so bad#the minigame is alright but the perk tree is made up of perks to unlock high skill locks and the loot behind those locks isnt worth it#neither is the exp you get from the lockpicking#and bethesda has that kind of ethos where they make lockpicking “required” in the main story#where its not really required and when it shows up in a given main quest its such a low level lock#that its more of a hassle that it exists than a reward for doing lockpicking

#i'm honestly not feeling starfield tbh...#over encumbrance fucking kills you annd all storage chests & ship cargo have tiny storage limits#and don't get me started on the performance#i should be able to play comfortably at a high-ultra mix but it hardly runs on low#and i have a good idea why and it's fucking stupid#fallout 76 has this same problem#creation engine games run like shit with borderless fullscreen#but there is no option here to set it to true fullscreen#disabling Fullscreen optimization helps but not much#it's fucking stupid#also since i have a nivida card i got fucked by their little amd deal it seems#honestly gonna just wait for creation kit 2 to come out so i can fix these problems but still#it's fucking annoying#i know the little console warrior freaks are gonna take offense but i'm just not enjoying it#the game was a gift so i feel bad but right now i just am not liking it#i feel like this is gonna be another skyrim where i hate the base game but modding keeps going and made it fun for me

bethesda's refusal (and slow walkback on this) to never use new vegas things has always confused me but after starfield i actually think i know what happens.
so bethesda barely ever listens to criticism, they just don't like to do that because they're completely bonkers and they didn't make new vegas, so what if they always just took "new vegas did this good" as the same thing as "bethesda did this bad"
they just. refused to listen to the people who liked new vegas (AKA most fallout fans) and managed to fool themselves into thinking they were a minority and that doubling down on their ways and ignoring vegas would be seen as a good thing.
like they tricked themselves into thinking new vegas was a black sheep of the series that people don't like.
this probably isn't the whole truth but it feels close to something
the treatment of new vegas lore between 2010 and 2020 really does speak to some kind of truly bizarre internal red tape
my best guess is that they decided all this "new vegas is better than 3" talk posed a theoretical financial threat to fo4 so they took a bizarre tact of negging it. i find their refusal to make FNV merch during this period particularly compelling
i also think it has a lot to do with 2015-2020 era Bethesda being absolutely terrified of making Fallout fans mad. they really went out of their way during this period to make sure all lore was minimal and isolated, going as far as greenlighting a fallout tabletop line which did not include any lore whatsoever
tbh i also still think there was some bad blood between beth and obsidian on some level despite the official narrative that everything is and always has been completely chill between them

i'm haunted by that one thing avellone mentioned... FNV wasn't allowed to introduce a power armor design, or develop vault tec lore. "too close to the core of fallout." to me that seems like a very weird set of stipulations & suggests they were kind of poised to bury it from the beginning

Personal gaming gripe about New Vegas
There's a post going around criticizing Starfield with some valid point (even if I think it's a largely a bad faith read of Starfield) but then in the very last paragraph it ends with this thing about how New Vegas is the last game to make you feel like there was hope, and that they're never going to make one like it again. Do y'all understand how sad it is to live that way?
There are so many games being made right now as we speak, by big companies, small studios, and independent developers right now, and they're all doing so many different things. What you're looking for is probably somewhere out there if you just look for it. Moreover, why do people keep tacitly expecting Bethesda to make another New Vegas when we should already understand that that's not their priority? Why is Starfield being compared to New Vegas?
Every time a post like that goes around it just comes off as miserable to me. Legitimately sad. New Vegas is a great game but there are other games out there, and studios that aren't Bethesda. Please don't let your favorite game turn you bitter towards other games you might enjoy.

Starfield Radio Stations (a collection of Spotify playlists)
Sooo I got super bored yesterday and made 11 (yes, eleven) Spotify playlists for radio stations I made up for the Starfield universe. There's a huge mix of genres, so I thought maybe some of you guys might like to listen too. I've aimed for around 50 tracks each but total lengths vary a little. You can also click here to see all the tracklists.
Red Rock Radio - "martian radio for all your heavy listening needs" - perfect for dogfights and shootouts. Heavy, rhythmic, lots of classic and contemporary hard rock. Probably something the Red Devils would listen to, and a personal favourite of mine.
Space-DST Radio - "classical rock to ease you through the spacelanes" - recently taken up space-trucking? Got you covered. Road-trip bangers and dad-rock in this one.
Asteroid FM - "ambient tracks for when you're lost in space" - think lots of instrumental mountain banjo and some psychedelic rock themes. Some vocal tracks but not many, very mellow in general.
Atlantic FM - "feel-good indie for drowning out the corporate drones" - what it says on the tin really. New Atlantis vibes - up-beat, jazzy, designed to make you feel better.
Radio Cheyenne - "music to awaken your inner space cowboy" - Akila City vibes at their finest. Country, blues and soft rock, very frontier-esque.
RADIONEON - "electronica for those neon-lit nights" - upbeat synth and punchy drums to vibe/dance/astral project/kill bad guys to. Some indie and some more mainstream tracks in here.
RADIONEON ASTRAL FM - "entrancing electronic beats" - made to fit with the air of the Astral Lounge, lots of trancey EDM and house.
Stargazer Radio - "melancholy music found in someone's ancestor's collection" - for when you just need to drift through space and ponder life's troubles. Sad vibes, with modern and old stuff.
Planet Pop! - "a mix of popular music from old earth" - only stuff released before Y2K here, contains lots of 80s in this one.
Planet Pop! 2K - "pop music from after the turn of the millennium" - a mix of dance and classic pop tracks released after Y2K. Tried to keep it space-themed but got carried away lol.
FM Voyager - "moog-ish music to drift in space to" - think 60s space music, and then multiply by 200. Not as many tracks on this one, probably the weirdest out of the lot.

Nameless Raiders Suck (In RPGS)
You know the ones I’m talking about, the random guys in a game that only exist for you to smash, stab, and shoot. “Raider”, “Marauder”, “Psycho”, “Bandit”. Who are they? Why are they here? What do they want? What do they have to do with the story?
The answer is ‘nothing’ most of the time, but why?
I like video games, particularly role-playing games and, if we want to get specific, CRPGS: Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, Rogue Trader, and other notable inclusions. To start though, I want to hone in on Fallout 3 and 4. I’ve played every entry in the series outside of one (shudders), and there is a specific issue that Bethesda just can’t seem to escape: The Nameless Raider.
The Problem
They just litter the place! Guys with no names and an endless supply of bad Halloween decorations! They shoot on sight and do all sorts of unspecified crimes when you aren't looking, so it's okay if you kill them!
“It’s a first person shooter, you need guys to shoot!” I hear you cry. Of course you do! Radioactive wildlife, feral ghouls, and malfunctioning robots all serve as suitable, ethically unambiguous targets. Other people, though?
The problem isn’t that it’s impossible for people to turn to irrational violence, but that Bethesda’s Fallout assumes that they will, and in massive numbers! It’s myopic: humans are no better than monsters, waiting for the slightest chance to break the shackles of civilization and visit sick torture on anyone stupid enough to step outside. They all do it in exactly the same way too, for some reason. It is a world fundamentally afraid of strangers and one uninterested in exploring what actually causes violence, or how to actually stop it.
Some people are evil.
Killing them is the solution.
That doesn’t just open a moral can-of-worms that Bethesda prevents the player from meaningfully interacting with, it also serves as a grand and embarrassing series of missed opportunities!
See, there'd be nothing wrong with this if these games weren't sandbox RPGs, where the goal is to create a believable and interesting world to get lost in.
Why don’t the raiders form proper gangs with names and recognizable cultures? That could really make the setting feel put together! Why don’t they try to rob people through intimidation, rather than jumping straight to murder? What a neat idea for an encounter! Could some of them offer their services as bodyguards or mercenaries? I bet a well-heeled, unscrupulous player character would enjoy having a couple genuine goons at their beck and call.
This problem is persistent in Bethesda titles (Skyrim’s bandits and Starfield’s space pirates), but also in other CRPGs. The Outer Worlds tries to make something of its unnamed marauders in the “Peril on Gorgon” DLC, but even the non-marauder ‘outlaws’ riddling the base game are decidedly lacking in purpose and definition.
The Why
Why do this? If it’s such a great opportunity, why do studios continuously manufacture unnecessarily sentient target dummies?
As simply as I can tell? It’s cheaper, it’s quicker, and it’s what the average player has come to expect. That is to say: most people will ignore it. That’s not good enough for me though, I think they can do better.
The Solution
Bethesda isn’t the only game in town when it comes to sandbox CRPGs, and some studios really work to justify their baddies!
Rogue Trader’s ‘Anver’ gang slots well into the ecosystem of their home station, Footfall, and the chaos cultists you fight throughout the game tend to be involved in larger plots, serving the strategies of your vile enemies (or allies, you filthy heretic).
The Great Khans of Fallout: New Vegas are united by a hatred of the NCR and a kick-ass biker aesthetic. The convicts in Primm are a splinter faction of the better-organized Powder Gangers, and even the small groups in the south, the Jackals and Vipers, are given gang names and spawn within defined territories.
Wasteland 3 delivers a cavalcade of bandit factions of varying sizes and complexities, but they are all named and granted a defined culture: The Dorseys, Los Payasos, The Gippers, The Godfishers, and more.
The How
That's a lot of examples, but how do they do it? There are many factors when it comes to defining a raider faction in a CRPG. Let's examine one in detail:
Fallout New Vegas, The Fiends.
Just to the west of Vegas proper live a group called The Fiends: too poor for the strip, too violent for Freeside, and too wild for The NCR. These dispossessed stragglers have clung together under a small number of tough, cold-hearted, and downright cruel leaders. Strength is power, and the only way for the members of this group to survive is to exercise that power by robbing travelers, stealing what they can, and killing what they can't. This is their uniting purpose, their shared history.
They fashion armor roughly out of whatever they can find, mostly old fabric, scraps of metal, and rubber. The aesthetic is unified by a cow-skull on the helm of each warrior meant to signify their brutality and indicate their belonging in the group. This is their uniting appearance.
Their fortresses are repurposed from the old world and decrepit, ill maintained. you won't find a fiend outside of their stronghold of vault 13 and a handful of outposts, plus the regions surrounding. This is their defined territory.
Combining these factors, (faction purpose, aesthetic, and territory) it becomes clear to a player when they are fighting fiends and when they aren't. Their crimes are known, their sins are tallied. Quests which take aim at The Fiends are unique from quests centered on other outlaw factions, and this clarity makes contact with The Fiends special. Crucially, this attention has been paid to every outlaw faction in the game, and you get a unique encounter no matter who you're fighting.
The end result is a world that lives and breathes. Even if you choose to play as a righteous justiciar who puts down marauder scum on-sight, never interfacing with these groups except at the barrel of a rifle, the subtle differences give weight to that decision. After all, who cares how callous or vengeful your character is when your targets are just that? Targets.
So What?
That's just it! Games like these, sandbox RPGs, thrive on having worlds you can fall into! The bigger story matters, the style is important, but the details are what create that sensation. Raiders can just be targets, most players won't consciously notice the wasted potential, but imagine if they weren't. Imagine getting out-played because you didn't realize you were up against a more elite gang, or winning out because you did your research and came prepared.
Imagine pitting two tougher groups against one another so that you could pick through the wreckage, or joining a weak gang to build it up into a real powerhouse. Imagine softening one group into upstanding mercenaries, or smashing them and driving them from their territory.
Imagine what these groups could be like, and then imagine making them that way.

oh right so i didn't think a good sci fi game existed bc what i like about sci fi is the exploration of space and there actually being stuff there to go look at (no man's sky doesn't count for this bc i don't want to look at auto generated stuff 90% of the time i'm playing), you know like exploration is shown in star trek or star gate. after starfield came out and was as bad as i expected when it came to exploration i thought it might not be a thing i'll see happen
then i started playing the outer wilds a few days back and omg this is amazing... actually the best sci fi experience i've had and i'm fucking around in a ship that has shit strapped the the roof, and the best part is that doesn't become something i look at and go "damn wish they didn't do that and just gave me a shuttle instead" bc it fits so damn well with the aesthetics of the game and it feels like i'm driving a bus through space which is way better than i ever thought
honestly outer wilds is going to be one of those games i'll look back on so fondly after i finish it

Gentle Promises in the Dark

No warnings. There's just a pinch of anxiety, but it's all fluff and happiness.
Sam asks what your future plans are. Will you leave him in search for another universe or stay behind?

Sam lays in bed, staring up at the ceiling. It must be late by now. But he isn’t tired, his mind turns over and over with endless thoughts.
A faint ray of light draws his attention, it’s the bedroom door opening just a crack for you to slip in. It shuts right behind you, returning the room to its inky blackness. His thoughts halt with the sound of your quiet footsteps.
Sam feels you slide under the covers, your feet are cold, as usual, and you snuggle up to him. Instinctually he’s moving to let you lay on his bare chest—your favorite spot.
“Hey.” You whisper, sounding content at last.
“Darlin’.” He drawls back in greeting, wrapping his arms around you.
“You doing ok? You’re not usually awake this late.”
“Just thinking.”
“Hm. About what?”
“Just about…” he sighs. “Everything.”
“Sounds like a lot.”
“Yeah…”
An uncomfortable silence lays in the air. Instead of passing, it lingers until Sam sighs again.
He decides to ask the question that’s been on his mind for a few weeks now.
“Are you going to go back into the Unity?”
Are you going to leave me behind?
You don’t answer at first. Memories surface of all the other times you traveled through the Unity. And all the times you came out of the other side. Feeling empty.
Out of fear or nervousness, you may have brushed the question off any other time, but now you answer honestly. “I don’t know. A long time ago I thought it was my purpose. Finding artifacts, fighting the Hunter, passing through the Unity… but…”
Sam hesitates, waiting on the edge, he wants you to continue. But he’s afraid of your answer.
“This universe…it’s different than the others.”
“I don’t think I’ve ever asked this, but how many universes have you been to? How many years have you been doing this?”
You chuckle. It sounds pained. “Too many to count and too many for one lifetime.”
Sam tries to laugh, to alleviate the anxiety he feels bundled up in his chest. “You tellin’ me you’re older than I am?”
Groaning playfully, you nuzzle into his neck. Your smile against his skin makes his heavy heart a little lighter.
“Let’s not talk about that part.”
He pulls you closer. “Ok deal.”
The silence lingers again.
“Are you looking for an opinion?” he asks, his voice very quiet.
“From you? Always.”
“I think you should stay here. With us—with me. We could…” He clears his throat, swallowing the words his heart wanted him to say.
“We could what?”
After a few beats of his pounding heart, “It’s gonna sound sappy, but…we just keep going. Grow older together. Watch Cora grow up. Live out our golden years exploring the stars.”
“You really want that?”
“Hell yes I do.”
You fall silent. Sam stares into the dark. He feels like he’s standing on the edge of a cliff, looking down into a deep abyss with no end. He wished you’d just spit it out, give him the bad news so he could start preparing himself to lose you—
“I can’t think of anything I’d want more.”
Sam’s whole body relaxes with a long-winded exhale. Had he been holding his breath?
“Did you think I was going to say no?”
“Honestly…I was kind of expecting you to. How could I compare to the life—or lifetimes—you’ve lived traveling to new universes? How could I compare to the power you gain every time you cross over?” He looks away, shrugging. “There’s an infinite number of me out there. You could do this again in the next universe.”
You pull back, propping yourself up to look at him in the dark. He can see the faint outline of your face. You’re frowning.
“There’s only one of you that’s like you. I have never met another that comes close.”
“You’re just trying to flatter me.”
You take his chin in your hand, forcing him to face you and preventing him from turning away. “Out of infinite universes, you’re the only one I’ve ever loved.”
“What about the one in your original universe?”
“If I loved him, I wouldn’t have left.”
“Huh…so that means…?”
“Yes.” He can see you smile. “I choose you. I’m staying.”
He laughs, pressing a light kiss to your lips. “Well, I guess first things first.”
You lean your forehead to his, he can hear the smile in your voice. “And what would that be?”
“I’m gonna marry you.”

I had this thought about Fallout 4 and the Institute a while back when my daughter (who is autistic and has a lot of issues with food) was really into this high-protein yogurt in pouches, but only one or two specific flavors that didn't have any bits in them. We dubbed it Space Yogurt (I was playing a lot of Starfield at the time and the pouches looked like the drink pouches in the game).
So in Fallout 4, the only food the Institute serves is this nutritionally complete food paste. My headcanon is that it's not because it's all they have or are capable of producing, but because synths (and a lot of the non-synth residents of the Institute) are very clearly autistically coded.
This choice of food has nothing to do with availability, IMO - it's about getting all these people with their various issues to actually consume enough nutrition in a day to keep them alive and functioning.
Food paste is textureless, easy to eat, doesn't require much attention or focus to consume, is probably not strongly flavored, and most importantly, it's consistent. Day after day, year after year, it's exactly the fucking same. Basically, it's ideal food for autistics, just like Space Yogurt.
Remember that one scientist who's complaining loudly that they've discontinued his favorite flavor of food paste? He's probably eaten this paste year in and year out, for as long as he can remember. Now it's gone, and he's having a meltdown because it was comforting and part of his routine and he fucking counted on it.
I don't have much sympathy for any of the Institute scientists, but I feel a little bad for Food Paste Guy, and for anyone who has to deal with him for the rest of that week.

holy shit.. mensis talking about something not (directly)bethesda or fromsoft?
I'M SORRY I HAVE TO.. i've been really into mass effect andromeda and the outer worlds lately and i'm so so distraught with all the shit those two games get???
i actually enjoy them both so very much. i just love space games done right .. AHEM.. not starfield. and i'm not sorry for saying that lmao starfield is so dogshit??? ANDROMEDA AND THE OUTER WORLDS IS WHAT STARFIELD COULD HAVE BEEN .. AND THOSE TWO GAMES WERE INCREDIBLY RUSHED FROM WHAT I KNOW, AND THEYRE STILL BETTER
the main problem i'm seeing from everyone with andromeda is like "ohh it's not like the main trilogy" NO SHIT?? ITS A DIFFERENT GAME?? AND THE MC IS NOTHING LIKE SHEPARD AND DOESNT HANDLE THINGS LIKE SHEPARD 😔 poor ryder, bro was just tossed into being pathfinder and is doing the best they can
i will admit, in some places the dialogue can be .. wonky or cringe but oh well?? i think the companion chrs are so personable and fun and likable (except cora.. i wanna throw cora into a volcano) AND THE CHRS ARE SO GOOD OH MY GOD.. i have a few in mind right now that i just ADORE

OC character deep delve - Seren Jones
Questions originally from a post by Painted-Bees, but the post seems to have vanished. Luckily I'd kept my draft as i started answering so here they are in their entirety. I tag the Coemancer Crew as always and anyone who'd like to do this as i really found it helped flesh out my ocs as the questions ask things i hadn't thought about. This is for Seren Jones, my Starfield OC - See her original look, her look during her early Starborn days and her more settled self.
Under cut because there are 50 questions!
1. How does your character think of their father? What do they hate and love about him? What influence - literal or imagined - did the father have? She loves her father Michael dearly. He helped give her a strong understanding for the need for education, but made learning fun, even in the most trying circumstances. She loves his enthusiasm for learning, but wishes he'd be more careful with his gambling. Though knows he is a secret card shark when it comes to poker!
2. Their mother? How do they think of her? What do they hate? Love? What influence - literal or imagined - did the mother have? She adores her mother Anne. Her mom was always the rock that held her family together even when they had to move from one planet to another. She was always there when Seren was upset, though she knows she got her emotional reactions to things from her mom too. As well as she thinks her empathic nature. She knows her mum hides it but now she is an adult she sees little tells and wishes her mum was more open about it. Once Starborn, she senses it clearly from the versions of Anne she brings herself to meet.
3. Brothers, sisters? Who do they like? Why? What do they despise about their siblings? Thanks to the Colony war, it put a scupper on her parents wanting any more children, instead choosing to focus on Seren alone.
4. What type of discipline was your character subjected to at home? Strict? Lenient? Her parents were pretty laid back with her growing up, never really needing to be strict with her as she was a quiet child who never really got into trouble, who enjoyed learning and kept to herself mostly.
5. Were they overprotected as a child? Sheltered? She was protected as a kid, mainly at first from the war, as much as possible but when she moved back to Akila, she soon learnt about prejudice and resentment from others that was only made worse when they moved to New Atlantis again. Her parents may have been laid back with her, but were protective against those who tried to bully her.
6. Did they feel rejection or affection as a child? Only ever affection from her parents.
7. What was the economic status of their family? She remembers them living in a large home in Midtown when she was little, then a modest apartment in New Atlantis, then when they moved back to Akila, the home was smaller in Mid town. Thanks to her father being a professor and her mom working for various businesses as PA, she never went without, but they tended to be modest with their income, just in case. It's why she was happy to help fund a nice central apartment for them when they retired to NA.
8. How does your character feel about religion? Her parents are both Enlightened, though not deeply involved and she is an atheist too, but doesn't subscribe to any system. She can respect other faiths until they start assuming she is like them or tries to push their beliefs on her. Now she is Starborn she knows there are things she doesn't understand, but still doesn't think a divine being created it.
9. What about political beliefs? She grew up Freestar and values freedom, but she also sees the theoretical benefits of the UC. Having grown up in both societies she sees the good and bad in both. Now she feels both systems need a major overhaul and redesign. Ones that care for all walks of life.
10. Is your character street-smart, book-smart, intelligent, intellectual, slow-witted? She has two degrees, one is starship design, the other business, so yes she is well educated. She wasn't street smart at first, but soon learnt to be once she became a whistleblower.
11. How do they see themselves: as smart, as intelligent, uneducated? She knows she is smart and thanks to her empathic nature, can be manipulative. She hopes her compassionate morality tempers that.
12. How does their education and intelligence – or lack thereof - reflect in their speech pattern, vocabulary, and pronunciations?
As above she can use words to manipulate people to her point of view. People have always considered her to have a 'silver tongue'. Being Starborn now and knowing how events usually play out makes it even easier for her.
13. Did they like school? Teachers? Schoolmates? She did a combination of virtual and in situ learning. She didn't enjoy early school as jumping from Freestar to UC then back, made her a target for kids from both sides. It wasn't until secondary school, where she had settled into Akila again, did she find at least some fair weather friends to make life less lonely. When she moved once again to UC space, she stayed with the school for a bit learning virtually so she'd be with people she knew, even if they were never close with her. Her teachers were alright, though she knew they also held prejudices against her, especially the UC teachers when they found she was educated in FC space. She often had to work to prove she was as educated as the rest of the students. Thankfully her father being an acclaimed professor himself, was often able to have a quiet word now and then with them and put that to rest.
14. Were they involved at school? Sports? Clubs? Debate? Were they unconnected? Not really. She did get involved in history club at one point as she was fascinated by Solomon Coe and how he started the FC, but she often argued with the teacher who ran it, who often was very biased against the UC for everything, which Seren knew wasn't accurate. Other than that she tended to keep to herself.
15. Did they graduate? High-School? College? Do they have a PHD? A GED? She graduated with honors in Business and starship design.
16. What does your character do for a living? How do they see their profession? What do they like about it? Dislike? Currently? She doesn't have a set occupation. Each universe is so unique she has to adapt to them. Practically she is an explorer and adventurer...sometimes thief and smuggler: acts she does to survive. In the original universe she loved being part of Constellation and hopes to go back to that when the time..and universe are right.
17. Did they travel? Where? Why? When? She moved a lot with her parents between Akila and New Atlantis, as her father took what ever teaching jobs he could before, during and after the Colony war. When she as an adult turned whistle-blower against the company she worked for, she had to move around a lot whilst she was in hiding as a miner. She made the best of it, her explorer nature developed as part of it. Once she joined Constellation she travelled so much she lost count of the planets she visited. Now her travels take her to places she'd never though possible.
18. What did they find abroad, and what did they remember? That people are the same no matter what.
19. What were your character’s deepest disillusions? In life? What are they now? That when you think things are bad, they can get worse.
20. What were the most deeply impressive political or social, national or international, events that they experienced? Oh boy...The fact the UC kept Vae Victis alive and he knew and used Terrormorphs? The fact Ron Hope was a traitor to the FC, that the UC created the Crimson Fleet in their vile treatment of prisoners. That the artifacts Constellation were collecting led to the multiverse! Just a few things...
21. What are your character’s manners like? What is their type of hero? Whom do they hate?
She is polite, but she is street-smart now and can get the feel for how to interact with people. That was how she was so good at going under cover with the CF for Sysdef. She doesn't have heroes, though her parents are close to that. She hates anyone who enjoys cruelty- The Hunter especially.
22. Who are their friends? Lovers? ‘Type’ or 'ideal’ partner? She is close friends with Barrett and Andreja, as well as Vlad. Less so with Sarah, though she respects her. The love of her life is Sam, in all ways and forms. She never met someone who sparked joy in her life, like he did and still does.
23. What do they want from a partner? What do they think and feel of sex? A best friend, someone who understands them and supports them. She loves sex, the intimacy and connection with another person on that deep level. Thankfully she found a partner who was very into it too.
24. What social groups and activities does your character attend? What role do they like to play? What role do they actually play, usually? Reluctant leader in her original verse. She never wanted to take such a role in Constellation, and even though Sarah was the defacto leader, she often felt that she did more to run the group than Sarah did, when it came to the Artifacts at least. Now they play what ever they need to be to survive each new universe.
25. What are their hobbies and interests? She used to love ship building, and that will come back to her soon. she also loved decorating her homes and outposts. She enjoys weapon and spacesuit design as well as everything that comes with exploring.
26. What does your character’s home look like? Personal taste? Clothing? Hair? Appearance?
Her OG home in Akila was cosy as was her apartment in NA. She liked to mix the more rustic FC style with contemporary features. Clothing wise, she is smart practical, favouring darker colours. Her hair was originally dyed silver grey, but she's since been dark turquoise blue and now sporting deep purple.
27. How do they relate to their appearance? How do they wear their clothing? Style? Quality? She like to wear darker makeup, especially lipstick, getting some semi permanent makeup done at Enhance so she doesn't have to worry about it. Hair wise, she loves colour even if her styles are practical. In fact everything now is practical, but she is keen to maintain her appearance.
28. Who is your character’s mate? How do they relate to them? How did they make their choice? Partner? Sam Coe. She and Sam share a similar sense of humour, she adores how devoted he is to his daughter and thinks she fell in love with him over that first. It showed how compassionate he was.
29. What is your character’s weaknesses? Hubris? Pride? Controlling? Grief and vengeance.
30. Are they holding on to something in the past? Can he or she forgive? At the moment she cannot forgive the Hunter for what he did and from everything she's seen and experienced, she never will. She wishes she could have held onto something from her past, but lost it all in the Unity except her memories. But she holds onto her love for Sam.
31. Does your character have children? How do they feel about their parental role? About the children? How do the children relate? She doesn't have any biological children, though she became much like a mother to Cora originally. She believes Cora thought of her as a mom too, but things didn't go well after Sam's death, with Cora blaming her for not saving him. Now she's Starborn, she's not sure she can have children herself.
32. How does your character react to stress situations? Defensively? Aggressively? Evasively? Depends on the situation. When she knows it's going to be stressful, she can be steady. But sudden events can knock her for six and she can be very emotional about them.
33. Do they drink? Take drugs? What about their health? She is Freestar, so can hold her liquor. She enjoys a glass or three of whisky or bourbon. She had tried Aurora once, didn't think much of it. Now she is Starborn her health is exceptional, but she knows it comes with caveats.
34. Does your character feel self-righteous? Revengeful? Contemptuous? She believes in vengeance. She crosses the Unity in order to become strong enough to end the Hunter.
35. Do they always rationalize errors? How do they accept disasters and failures? She didn't do well after Sam's death. Found it very hard to accept it wasn't her fault. Since then she'd had to time to accept that The Hunter played them all.
36. Do they like to suffer? Like to see other people suffering? They do not enjoy suffering. They jumped universes to try and run from it! But they would happily see The Hunter suffer as well as anyone else who enjoyed cruelty.
37. How is your character’s imagination? Daydreaming a lot? Worried most of the time? Living in memories? She daydreams a lot about finding somewhere to just stop. She worries she will never find that. She keeps her memories close, though she is starting to be more open to living in the moment.
38. Are they basically negative when facing new things? Suspicious? Hostile? Scared? Enthusiastic? She has no choice in experiencing new things, if she has a chance to find a universe she can stay in, she'd take it. She is often terrified of what she will find next but she is quick to adapt.
39. What do they like to ridicule? What do they find stupid? Stupidity and arrogance. She likes to bring down those who are both. See her original universe Delgado and The Crimson Fleet...also Ron Hope.
40. How is their sense of humor? Do they have one? Sometimes quirky and light hearted, sometimes dark and dry. Her experiences have changed her somewhat.
41. Is your character aware of who they are? Strengths? Weaknesses? Idiosyncrasies? Capable of self-irony? She is now acutely aware of the fact she is Starborn. She isn't human anymore. She knows she has powers beyond any human and that comes with a sense of superiority she fights to restrain. Thankfully her empathy helps her keep her sense of compassion and morality.
42. What does your character want most? What do they need really badly, compulsively? What are they willing to do, to sacrifice, to obtain? To find a universe with a Sam just like her first. She knows now it wont be the same, but she can try again and do better this time. She sacrificed her humanity to do this.
43. Does your character have any secrets? If so, are they holding them back? She keeps her Starborn nature close until she trusts those she's with as there is no hiding her abilities in a fight.
44. How badly do they want to obtain their life objectives? How do they pursue them? Desperately. She jumps universes to find the right one.
45. Is your character pragmatic? Think first? Responsible? All action? A visionary? Passionate? Quixotic? She is passionate, but holds it back as best she can in situations where she needs a clear head.
46. Is your character tall? Short? What about size? Weight? Posture? How do they feel about their physical body? She is 5'6" and strong, wiry physique. She is Akilan born so stronger than she appears. She holds herself tall. She knows her Starborn body will always be healthy, but worries what it has changed about her.
47. Do they want to project an image of a younger, older, more important person? Do they want to be visible or invisible? She knows she can command authority, but temper it with camaraderie that people just happily work with her. Being Starborn and in new universes she plays the role she needs to whilst learning where she is.
48. How are your character’s gestures? Vigorous? Weak? Controlled? Compulsive? Energetic? Sluggish? She tends to mirror people when she talks with them, as her empathic nature uses that to make them feel comfortable around her.
49. What about voice? Pitch? Strength? Tempo and rhythm of speech? Pronunciation? Accent? Her voice is cultured Akilan though again she can mirror accents if needed to work with people. Slightly melodic and well spoken.
50. What are the prevailing facial expressions? Sour? Cheerful? Dominating? Very neutral face, but she's been told her eyes are piercing as if looking into their souls.

Promptober 1
@seasaltandcopper and I are collabing thru promptober! Today we did something for Mal/Lyra in their Starfield AU :3

Things had been going smoothly for days, so naturally they were overdue for some trouble. It found them in a shitty little spacer bar set up in independent space, a semi-popular haven for smugglers, pirates, and fugitives, and the closest port to rest and ressupply before crossing into Freestar space.
If Mal had bothered to look closely, he probably would've spotted a few familiar faces in the scattered crowd. He didn't.
Save the festering grudges and trips down memory lane for after he had a couple drinks in him.
Well. That had been the plan anyway.
"Hey," a voice slurred, somewhere to Mal's right. "Hey, I know you."
Pointedly refusing to look at the man, and hoping that would be enough hint to shoo him away, Mal ordered a drink. "No, you don't."
"I do," the spacer insisted. "I know her too."
"No ye don't." Lyra replied, lip curling as she set her drink down. "Cause if ye did, ye wouldn't be damn fool enough to run her gob about it."
The bartender set Mal's drink down in a small, grubby looking glass, and he snatched it up before the liquid had a chance to settle. He tossed it back, grimaced, and signaled for another.
Maybe the booze would put him in a more charitable mood. Or at least dull his nerves before this asshole got on every last one of them.
The spacer scoffed. So much for taking the hint. "Nah, I'd never forget a mouth like that." Somehow the line managed to sound both derisive and leering in a way that made Mal's skin crawl. "And you better mind it, bitch, or I'll slice those pretty cocksucking lips right off your face, I don't give a damn who you've cozied up to this time."
Leaning back in her chair to assess him, Lyra cocked her head with a faint scowl. "Y'know what. I do remember you, too." 'Cocksucking' lips pulled up into a lurid smirk as she batted her eyelashes.
He glanced back to his friends at a table across the room. Lyra's eyes slipped after, counting them. Weighing her chances. He grinned savagely, "'Course ye do, I'm —"
"You had the smallest, purplest balls I'd ever seen in me life. I thought ye were a eunuch or somethin'." She flung her whiskey at him. "They grew in a bit an' you 'aven't learned t'manage 'em yet? Or are ye just compensatin' for it?"
Okay, so maybe diplomacy was never an option.
The spacer spluttered as he took most of a glass of whiskey to the face. He yelled something. His buddies, sitting a few tables over, also yelled something. Chairs scraped. A couple patrons lifted their heads, curious or cautiously excited about the free show.
Mal drew his pistol from its side holster and shot the guy.
Just once. And because Mal was feeling merciful, it was the knee and not the spacer's tiny little purple nuts. The guy dropped, howling in pain and clutching his leg, before he could do more than dream about taking a swing at Lyra.
"This guy bothering you, honey?" Mal interjected wryly, taking advantage of the brief shock in the aftermath. "I can shoot him again if you want."
She considered it. But he wasn't looking particularly threatening, curled up on the ground like a pillbug muttering curses. A keen assessment of his friends told her they were startled now, but they weren't very good at math. "Nah. Y'can shoot them though, if ye like." She answered, leaning over to lilt in his ear, "Might 'ave t'give ye somethin' special fer the trouble."
He hummed, lip tugging up at the corner. The way her breath tickled the shell of his ear had all the hairs on the back of Mal's neck rising, and the honey-promise in her voice had other things rising, too.
Well, that was one way to cure a bad mood without the booze.
"Sure," Mal answered, reaching down to brush a gentle hand up Lyra's thigh, still making direct eye contact with the thug on the ground as if to say, see, dumbass, that's how you do it. "It'd be my fucking pleasure."

my bad, Outer Worlds, not Starfield, I mixed them up. Did you enjoy it?
no worries!! so like, overall, yes! i did enjoy the outer worlds. i dont think its the best obsidian game ever but i would recommend it i found it really easy to get into and pick up, which is nice, because other games ive played like cyberpunk 2077 i felt like there was so much going on at once i got overwhelmed and it made me not want to play. (this isnt a critique of the game its just not what i was looking for at the time). the atmosphere of the game is amazing, and scary, because you see the critiques of capitalism and corporation control in the game and honestly all the horrid things the board is doing sounds entirely plausible to me. having to rent your own grave after your death absolutely sounds like something companies today would pull if they could get away with it. and thats just one example it was directed by the original creators of fallout and while this is good in some ways i wish the outer worlds was more separate from fallout... because the combat is very fallout. theres no third person view but there is tactical time dilation which is basically vats. theres a mechanic called flaws which work very similar to Traits in fallout 1, 2 and new vegas. i wish they differentiated more from fallout because i can see why the outer worlds invited the comparison to fallout new vegas. which is a shame imo this might just be me personally but i feel like Who the player character is (The stranger ) wasn't really explored much. out of the obsidian games i've played they feel the least established. i would have liked to have gotten more into who my character was/is, and their motivations, but yeah. so, yeah!! i would def recommend it, its a fun anti capitalist space western. its just not my favourite game that obsidian have put out

It’s late and alcohol buzzes in his veins as he palms the nav table with slumped shoulders. There’s a brunette sucking him off that he’d brought back from The Last Nova. It’s been three weeks of worrying and he needs to find pockets of relaxation. So, the brunette offered relief and a blow job’s a blow job. He’s never been too picky about it before. But this one? It’s not that it’s bad and it could be categorized as pretty good. It’s just not—it simply is not her. It’s not great.
Delgado grits his teeth together and vacantly stares as the red lights in the command center flicker. Fucking annoying. He’s losing focus. But he shouldn’t have to concentrate this hard. It’s a goddam blow job. Shouldn’t he be thoughtless and less tense by now? Maybe if he just imagines the mischievous glint in her eyes or the feel of her teal strands in his grasp the tension might unravel. He closes his eyes to paint her picture but it’s blocked by flickering orange behind his eyelids. Flicker. Flicker. Suck. The suction is pleasurable but his mind is so fickle, and he falls flaccid with the languid lathing of the pirate’s tongue. Fuck, he can’t even remember this one’s name.
He backs up and tugs her off. Teeth scrape against sensitive skin and he winces. “Go.”
“But I—”
Raised finger like the reaper, he points at the fated door, his pants bunching around his ankles. The pirate doesn’t even huff right as they saunter from the room. Delgado yanks up his pants, and strolls those few steps to the exit. He marches down the stairs to the command center. There’s not a single glance spared in the direction of the displaced pirate.
The trip to ship services is the same as always minus the interruptions from Murdock. Instead of entering Jazz’s space though, he leans over the counter like any regular customer, waiting for her to notice him at the window. Eyes on her computer screen only, she doesn’t see him there.
He taps the ‘ring for service’ bell once and its jingle echoes throughout the atrium. “Have you heard—”
Jazz sighs and cuts him off. “No, still haven’t heard anything from your precious pirate.” Her brows furrow as she continues typing, the glow of the computer screen highlighting her annoyance.
Naeva barked out a laugh. “Your little friend probably ran off with the money by now. Do you really think someone who steals from you every chance she gets is going to suddenly become loyal? What reason does she have to bring it back here?”
“I hate to agree with Naeva on this one boss,” Jazz says while her fingers clack against the keys. She briefly glances up at him.
“You agree because deep down you know I’m right.” Naeva folds her arms across her chest, leveling a hardened stare at Delgado. “I say you hunt the bitch down and take back what’s ours.”
“Alright, Naeva. That’s enough,” Del says, his tone remaining cool and even. “Jazz. Ready my ship.”
A small smile graces Naeva’s lips and she almost nods approval. “I am leaving The Key in both of your hands while I am away.”
“You are leaving it in good hands.” Naeva’s smile grows bigger.
“Oh and Jazz, I need my ship prepped for Bannoc IV.”
Naeva’s face falls and the clacking of the keys ceases.
“You have got to be fucking joking,” Naeva says, throwing her hands up in the air in disbelief.
“I mean, I do have prototypes of both the ComSpike and conduction grid but they are just that. They are prototypes. I can’t guarantee your safety.”
“I do not tell you often but you should know that I have great faith in your capabilities, Jazz. I do not need the concern. I simply need my ship outfitted with what you have.” He turns away.
“Del,” Naeva reaches out to grasp his wrist.
“I know what you are going to say. But I need you to trust me on this one. Just one last time.”
Naeva releases his wrist with a sigh. “Fine but if you don’t come back—”
“I trust you and the others to take care of the fleet. If I don’t come back, you can say I told you so to the ghost of my memory.”
“Ha. Real funny,” Naeva says, shaking her head.
Jazz sighs. “Well, if you’re sure.”
“I am sure,” Delgado states without hesitation. “So outfit my ship while I gather a crew.”
He exits, heading back to the bunks. Hopefully, he will be able to scrounge up his usual crew and they won’t be too drunk or high.
