They wake late the next morning, still half asleep as the shift siren rings out. They're both sprawled on their backs, shoulders pressed together, warm under the blankets. Vander yawns, drifting back to sleep.

"Tomorrow," Silco says, soft and sleepy. Vander makes an interest hum. "I'll have to work tomorrow."

It's more of a questioning hum this time.

"I'm not paying for a bunk. They don't know where I am," Silco explains, starting to sound more awake. That's not what Vander wants. "After three days, they'll report me to the enforcers."

"We paid for meals last night. At the mess hall." Vander rolls onto his side, facing Silco. He drapes an arm across Silco's chest, fingers resting over his ribs, feeling the movement of every breath. "They know you're here."

"Hm." Silco reaches out, rests a hand on Vander's thigh. "Just a few more minutes and then I'll get up."

A few more minutes is actually a few hours. They wake up close to midday and Silco insists on bundling up the sheet and bringing it to the washroom with them. With everyone working, the washroom is empty. No one crowding the benches ringed by narrow long lockers, where miners keep a change of clothes (or more if they own the clothes).

There's a handwash station on the other side of the room, a wide fountain turned on with foot pedals, where the water flows out in a circle so fifteen miners can wash their hands and faces at once. A single mirror by the door. The room feels so much larger without being full of bodies.

Silco strips off his clothes and doesn't bother opening his locker. He leaves them on the bench, something unthinkable when the washroom is crowded after the end of shift. He heads to the small cubicles lining the wall, with their small stools and buckets, and taps with hot and cold water.

Silco sits down and starts by tipping a bucket of warm water over his head, plastering the dark hair to his pale skin. Vnder watches the water travel down his body, the narrow chest and the ridges of spine that show when Silco leans forward for more water.

Silco notices him staring, and glances over his shoulder at Vander. Vander's expecting some sharp remark, some reminder that Vander is wasting time, but Silco's expression softens.

"Get undressed," Silco says, gentler than he usually is in the mornings, "and come over here."

Vander doesn't need to be told twice. He strips down quickly.

Silco's working soap into his hair as Vander steps behind him. "Fill the bucket?" Silco asks as he rubs soap over one arm and then the other.

Vander waits for Silco's nod before he tips the water over him, and then fills the bucket up again. It takes two more buckets before Silco considers himself clean.

"Your turn," Silco says, standing up. "Do you want to sit or stand?"

"Like you'd even reach," Vander teases.

"I could stand on the stool." Silco sounds like he's already thought about it. "I was not fond of sitting the day after."

"The day aft–" Vander stops himself, suddenly realising the answer to that question. Silco means the day after getting fucked.

"It fades within a day or so. So if you prefer to stand…"

"Yes," Vander says, "but no, not for that reason. Those stools… it's awkward getting my legs to fit, but sitting isn't, you know…"

"Painful?" Silco supplies, eyebrows raised. With his hair slicked down and his head tilted Ike that, it makes him look like a curious rat. "No back ache? No discomfort?"

Vander pulls a face. He can't exactly say none, but it's not pain. He shrugs and there's a familiar flash of irritation on Silco's face.

They're alone in the washroom and still, Vander leans in close so he can drop his voice to a hush. "Some… tenderness, okay? Like… I am very aware of where your cock was last night. But it's not bad, it's…"

Silco gets it. He can tell by the possessive hand on Vander's chest, the heated smile on Silco's lips.

"We're alone in here," Silco says and it's dizzying how quickly Vander's blood rushes down to his cock. Silco has that effect on him. "And we do have a very handy stool."

"Handy?"

"Mm-hm." When Silco sits down on the low stool, his head is level with Vander's hips. He leans forward, letting Vander's hard cock brush his cheek. "We shouldn't waste an opportunity."

FABLEHAVEN MOVIE IS REAL??? oh my god that is my FAVOURITE book series. please god I hope it ends up being good <3

(I'm keeping my expectations very low of course lmao, I've been burned wayyy too many times by bad movie adaptations. but honestly I'll just be happy if it brings more people into reading the book series!!

other than one or two things (*cough cough the horrific disaster of Brackendra cough cough*) it's such a SEVERELY underrated series and one of the only childhood favourites of mine that has actually held up enough that I enjoy rereading it to this day!!!) (also hands-down the best inclusion of indigenous peoples into worldbuilding that I've ever seen, which is really cool!!)

#personal #canary continuity #when it comes to the first draft im very sure i wont be crossing 55k words #but that doesnt mean its not going to end up longer than that because i need to lengthen several scenes #and yes i actually think i might need to make it slower in some places. even though i have just crossed fifty thousand words #the last 25 thousand words of this is just a dissociative psychotic break so stay tuned for that #my highest estimate was a lot larger than how it turned out but like. GOOD. i do not need to make a novel length fanfiction #(ignoring that 50k is the minimum length of a novel and this is like 140 pages long)#i mostly have to do some of the earlier scenes which are the ones i have to be more delicate with #even though theyre not like the nasty abuse ones. its because capturing the uncanny valley is so important #ill probably be heavily editing them after i finish the first draft #sorry ive been yapping about my progress so much btw i do Not share my fic with my friends for personal reasons (intense paranoia disorder)#so this is my thought dumping ground. also i just love babbling about writing

#she bork #novel 2024 #hit my 2k for today so i'm stopping but damn. still planning on probably finishing like tuesday-ish bc i close tonight work tomorrow morning #then work an overnight sunday into monday and then work early tuesday morning and ik that stretch of workdays is gonna suck ass so i don't #anticipate getting much done. but damn girl i am truly almost finished like i got one more day. sitting right at around 100k words. insane #worried the last few scenes are barebones but i'm like that catfish director in bojack horseman that's like 'ah whateva we'll fix it in #post' lol i'm like i just need to get it DONE and then i can spiff it up in edits. insane cannot believe i almost have an entire first draft #like genuinely just a few more pages to go. like maybe ten more pages max. never thought i'd do it tbh

Ortega peers at the office building, circling it, trying to busy themeself with investigating the scene. The building is drab and boring, walls grey and nondescript. Normally, it would've gone completely under the Ranger's radar, but it's what's inside that's important. And around. Ortega cringes as they nearly trip over another dead body. They squash the memories threatening to spill over and focus their attention back to the task at hand.

A few of them were falling by the time the Rangers reached. It was a chase gone wrong, Ortega was the only one following at first. They only thought to call somebody when the first body fell. They chew the inside of their cheek, trying to ignore the voice in their head yelling at them for wasting time. The team needed to be there. There was no way around it– alone, more people would end up dead. That includes Heartbreak. No, not Heartbreak.

Sidestep. They whisper a soft curse to themeself, pretending like they couldn't hear their voice crack.

getting an iced pumpkin chai in the morning and then my personal goal is to spend the whole day writing and i hope i can come back to this post tomorrow and rb w how much progress i’ve made!!!

#i have a love/hate relationship w this fic and i’m gonna rant to myself bc hehe it’s almost midnight so why not :>#okay SO. i for some reason just didn’t create any proper outline for this story and i think that’s why it’s taken me so long to write it #because i don’t necessarily have a why/a REASON for this story or plot… like even thinking abt doing the dialogue and trying to find flow +#cohesion is making me so 😐 and also honestly… i’m terrible at doing drafts in the first place #i don’t write linearly i jump all over the place while writing and SOMETIMES i can connect things but this time i could NOT #and i would focus on one tiny part for SO long and make no progress anywhere else like GIRL……… ENOUGH #but hmmmm yeah i also for some reason feel like esp w my writing it’s super robotic and doesn’t have emotion #like i’m not writing w suguru’s voice and instead i’m writing as the author and it’s kinda irking me #if that makes sense… hmmmm……….. also i might be doing dual pov so hopefully it doesn’t look too wonky #but yeah 😭 i need to work on scene setting & describing things effectively + doing show not tell #like i just made a mini outline rn and wow . it’s Not it at all 😭😭😭 there’s no WHY to the story and it’s making it hard to write #okay not necessarily a ‘why’ but like . maaaaan so I've spoken ad nauseum about how I write fic sooo much faster than novel work just because novel work makes me so stupidly anxious so it's difficult not to get avoidant when it comes to it.

But these last few weeks, something has just?? clicked?? Still have a boatload of edits to do, and then I need to write a biiiiiig final chunk of the thing, but this difference is so, so promising.

I still get a wee bit of "oh god oh fuck" right before I dive in, but compared to constant "this is shit this is shit this is shit" that made it hard to write more than 3 sentences per hour in ~2022, this is such a nice change. I was starting to get seriously worried 💀

#miiiiiiiiiiight offer some pals an early draft when it's finished just to get some eyes on the thing #some of whom are on here 👀#because there's so much worldbuilding bs to tackle that I just need reassurance that it's all a) coherent b) enjoyable #but i'm feeling optimistic about this thing FINALLY #and enjoying working on it FINALLY FINALLY #i did set myself a rule of no longer making long-winded update posts about progress on IG #where i get into specifics of like 'X amount of chapters edited//i'm struggling with this one specific scene' etc etc #and I think that really helped #because it's just my little thing now?
