Hello, Hilary! After finishing my studies I was burned out and lost my love for the Middle Ages, but I feel it coming back lately and I'm trying to rekindle it as best as I can. I'm already reading a couple of books, a series of articles, and listening to The Medieval Podcast, but I was wondering if you could recommend other historians to follow in tumblr that talk about the period. I tried to go through the general tags but oh my god. Oh my god they're so bad? I was expecting to find bs and stereotypes but not to this level what do you mean peasant women got married when they were TWELVE I-- No. No, I can't keep searching there, I'll have a conniption, xD Anyway, thank you in advance, I've been enjoying myself greatly going through your Richard the Lionheart tag, I do love me some early Plantagenets 💖

Aha, the only Tumblr historian of the medieval period that I can 100% vouch for (as in close irl friends, have gone to conferences and traveled across Europe on Archive Hunts together, worked together/professionally collaborated, edited/read the other's stuff, contributed to the same collections/journals, bitched and moaned about the Academic Horrors) is @oldshrewsburyian. I have definitely seen some good posts on the topic go by on my dash, but they're not from people I follow and/or can personally vet for, so I am hesitant to recommend sight unseen. That is because, as you say, Tumblr is uh... really not the place for doing history, especially medieval history, and much of what passes for it is basically cliches, stereotypes, wild assumptions, and other such misinformation, willful and otherwise.

There are certainly some other history-adjacent folks that I follow, or who work academically on the premodern period; @margridarnauds does medieval Celtic literature, for example. I also have some historians who follow ME and who pop up in my asks or notifications, but much to my shame, I'm blanking on them. So yes, in the name of making sure that I know the credentials of people that I recommend here, I will have to say this is all I can think of for now, but Historians of Tumblr, please feel free to self-promote in the comments (and note if you work on the medieval period, since that's what our friend here is asking for specifically).

i spent way too much time on this—like, "wrote it in google docs first" amount of time—but, uh. team strq ages let’s gooooooo!!!

first things first, some assumptions™ that i’m basing this on:

1. the remnant school year follows the japanese school year, i.e. begins in april, and ends in march the following year.

2. the years are split based on birth year, nice and clean, since blake (who’s born in january) says ruby is “only two years younger” than wby. this would mean that blake had already turned 18 by the time of V1 (she would have been 17 during the black trailer), while weiss and yang turned 18 during V1-2 and ruby 16 during the small timeskip at the end of V3. (this is also what i’m used to, so it’s easier on my brain. don't @ me.)

the second point isn’t super relevant, but it does keep things simple since we don’t know strq’s birthdays; basically, the year students start their first year, they’ll be turning 18, 19 for the second year, 20 third, and 21 for fourth, with the possibility that some may have already turned 22 by the time they graduate.

so. the year strq graduates, they’re 21-turning-22 years old. since yang is born on july 28th, raven would have gotten pregnant some time around november / december (if i did my math right. i did count with my fingers.) since the school year ends in march, and i’m doubtful raven was already pregnant while still at school, at earliest yang could have been born was during the same year raven would turn 23.

and since yang is currently 19, 23+19=42 <- the youngest strq could possibly be in the present day.

(that is, assuming they were all 17-turning-18 during their first year. depending how you interpret raven’s “and qrow and i were the perfect age”, they could have been either exactly the age they should be to attend beacon (17-turning-18), or close enough for the tribe that they could pass as the right age.)

anyway! next part: figuring out how old they were during the V9 flashback.

first, the kiddos. if we are to take what yang said literally about ruby not being able to even talk yet when summer disappeared, ruby being a 2-year-old at the time is probably the safest bet. does she look like a 2-year-old in the flashback? eeeehhh… while i’d be willing to give a little more leeway there since it’s a short scene, to be extra safe, let’s say ruby is about 2-3yo, with yang being 4-5yo. if the members of strq were 23 the year yang was born, they would be about 27-28 at the time of the flashback.

which, if i’ve done my math right (knock on wood), is cutting it pretty damn close for raven becoming the spring maiden—even more so if she didn’t get pregnant the soonest possible moment after graduation—since as per miles: “As for ‘too old’, we don't like having super hard-fast rules for certain things, but we've sort of unofficially figured that 30 is probably around the cutoff point to become a maiden.” [source]

to be honest, i do think the math checks out. in before the dawn, according to yatsuhashi, theodore is “likely in his forties, maybe older”, and ozpin “had been younger [than theodore] but seemed much older.” per raven, ozpin was already the headmaster when team strq was formed, and prodigy or not, if as the headmaster of beacon he had a seat at the vale council (likely, since both lionheart and ironwood had council seat in their respective kingdoms as headmasters) i’m somewhat doubtful the rest of the council would have been super fine with someone who isn’t even the age of a huntsman graduate being in charge of what is essentially the main defense of the kingdom. so, if theodore is likely in his forties, maybe older (let’s translate that into late 40s-early 50s), and ozpin was younger than him but older than strq by at least 4 years, that would put him at ~45 in V1, and ~47 if he were still alive. maybe subtract a year or two, as a prodigy discount if you so please, but all in all, it fits rather nicely: yatsuhashi’s thoughts about theodore’s and ozpin’s ages are accurate-ish, and raven is just the right age to inherit maiden powers if she did get them during summer’s mission��and similarly, if / when summer joined salem, they’d still have to search for a maiden host since summer is going to reach the unofficial cutoff point of 30 very soon.

This is probably the most inflammatory thing I've said in a while, but

Something really bothers me about the insistence that Deaton is a benevolent force of good, when the proof is that he is helpful to Scott.

And he is helpful to Scott. Just like Peter can be helpful to Derek. The problem with both of those is that, generally, they are ONLY helpful to Scott and Derek, and always have plans and schemes of their own.

Scott had no choice in who his emissary was. He didn't know WHAT an emissary was. Deaton positioned himself nicely there. He showed Stiles how to use mountain ash and then was like "actually, nevermind."

Does this mean Deaton is an evil sleaze? No. But that doesn't mean he's aboveboard. He lies and manipulates, he just happens to favour Scott.

As I write this out, I think it's the insinuation that Derek is just an untrusting asshole and not someone who is more attuned to recognising an adult man who is pushing a teenage boy to do things that maybe he wouldn't do normally. IE, the mountain ash thing at the end of Season 2. It didn't help in the fight against the kanima. It didn't even kill Gerard! It just... was a shitty thing that happened.

I know people say that it's fanon that Deaton had any involvement in that, but uh. Scott didn't pull mountain ash out of his ass and distill it into pill form.

Sadly, I think that moment + the true alpha thing happening in quick succession kind of made us divide into different camps, and now we're fighting the same war forever, but I think there's wiggle room here.

Deaton isn't evil but he isn't a paragon of virtue. Scott is lionhearted but self-righteous. Derek is slow to trust, but once he does trust, he's loyal. No one on this show is perfect.

I will, however, always support Derek Hale's wrongs.

fandom tends to divide it self into these all or nothing dichotomies that does such a disservice to the story and characters.

the whole scott versus derek debate should've been left behind in season 2. season 3 spent so much goddamn time on them moving past it. the entire episode of frayed was dedicated to the scott and derek relationship, you know.

derek wasn't even like mad about scott becoming an alpha either. scott merely wasn't his alpha just like he was never scott's but they had accepted that by that point. if anything derek was proud of scott.

besides scott becoming a true alpha and derek giving up his alpha status to save his sister was them both being at different places in their character arcs but also when you look at the hows and whys of it all they both were manipulated into it. for different reasons.

peter and deaton mirror and foil each other in interesting ways.

deaton is such a fascinating character and a prime example of doyalist versus watsonian perspectives.

he is so enigmatic in-verse because he was used mostly for exposition and lore drops by the writers but in turn this made the character very reserved, careful and calculating. he keeps his own counsel.

early in season 1 stiles is jealous of derek acting like scott's "yoda" but all the while deaton slips into the position of being scott's mentor. he becomes the obi-wan without either derek or stiles noticing. deaton definitely shares old ben's "from a certain point of view" philosophy.

i know people have been weird about deaton over the years in unpleasant and let's be real here racist ways which is unfortunate and dumb. he isn't evil. he just has his own motivations and agenda which is a good thing because characters are flat and boring otherwise. like yeah it's frustrating that deaton didn't tell derek he was talia's emissary but wow look at that character conflict, look at the added depth to deaton and to the lore in one decision.

i really am looking forward to my rewatch so i can dissect his character and pay more attention to him because i have thoughts about him and his sister marin.

i think one of my favorite things about deaton is that he chose scott to be the chosen one in a way. look at currents when deaton tells scott what a true alpha is.

deaton: it's rare-- it's something that doesn't happen within a hundred years. but, every once in a while, a beta can become an alpha without having to steal or take that power. they call it a true alpha. it's one that rises purely on the strength of character, by virtue, by sheer force of will. scott: ...you knew this would happen. deaton: i believed. from the moment I knew you were bitten, i believed.

and i love the contrast to marin saying in alpha pack:

"and I sent her to do what I've always done-- maintain the balance"

to deaton's regression of the mean:

deaton: gave you ever heard the term "regression to the mean?" scott: no... deaton: it's a bit of a technical way of saying things will always even out. scott: like, things will always get better? deaton: more like... things can't always be bad. scott: so, no matter how bad things get-- deaton: --or how good-- scott: they always come back to the middle.

they both want balance but don't seem to agree what balance looks like or how to achieve it.

i cannot wait to pick his character apart.

“New Game Plus" klaus

I've been meaning to do this for Klaus for quite some time now when the New Game Plus was first announced, and I am finally getting around to it.

Not only did Klaus forget Aurelius, but uh...He may have forgotten so many others as well. People like Kratos, his boss at Lionheart (whoops), and anyone else he's interacted with. He knows he's an angel but he doesn't remember anything other than that. He doesn't have all of his abilities either. He only has flight! if anyone ever wants to keep track of what I'll be unlocking here and there, give this a look. I even put NG next to his actual stats page beside Hypergiant!

Anyway, what does this mean for Klaus? It means that he's back to square one. Like when he was FIRST brought to Spirale. Still a nice guy, but a lil bit colder. Sorry guys. SORRY AURELIUS. Damn.

OH, one more thing: the effect of all of this also has him thinking his father's alive. Welp.

A Minor Hiccup while Painting the Town

•The episode begins in Ports classroom, where he is once again going on one of his rants instead of teaching. Jaune then gives a bouquet of white roses to Weiss, who rejects them and then turns her attention to Pyrrha.

•"So Pyrrha, I just thinking about how we're the two most popular girls at school and the strongest of our class! (~Weiss stop lying~) We have so much in common and we are both incredible, and yet we don't even have dates for prom yet. So, I was just wondering... uh, if we still don't have dates for the prom, maybe you would consider we go together as sisters-in-arms?"

•"Weiss... are you asking me to be your date?" Pyrrha asks while flashing a smirk.

•"WH-WAHT!!! N-No, I w-wasn't suggesting th-that?! A-as a Schnee, I need to consider my bloodline and all, hehe!"

•"I can continue your bloodline for you, if you want!" Jaune perks up.

•"EWW, GROSS! No way, Jaune!" Weiss screams loud enough to catch the classes, and Port's, attention.

•Weiss fake smiles at Port until he returns to the lecture.

•Pyrrha then restarts the conversation, "Weiss, going on a date dosen't mean we're married. Have you even been with another woman before?"

•"Wha, women with woman? That's not me, unless you want it to be Pyrrha, wait no I'm just kidding, ahahahaha."

•"Aha, well I think this is something about yourself that you should give more thought to, Weiss." Pyrrha says before looking away and muttering under her breath, "...I'm, not incredible..."

•Jaune notices this comment, but doesn't say anything.

•The scene shifts to team RWBY's dorm room, where the girls are trying on their new outfits and thanking Weiss for ordering them from the SDC fashion department.

•The girls then explain their plan to uncover Roman's plot with the White Fang: Ruby and Weiss will head to Vale's CCT and use Weiss' connections to check the SDC's records for any inconsistances between past Dust robberies and Roman's current activities; Blake will attend the local White Fang rally which not-so-secretly recruits new members and hands out orders after dark to discover what they are planning; Yang will head to Vale's red-light district to "negotiate" information from the local Broker. The reason why Blake and Yang are working alone is because, as Ruby admits, "you two are a lot tougher than Weiss and me, so if anything goes wrong, you can handle yourselves." And because Yang's location is in between the CCT and the Fang rally, the girls plan to have a rendevouz at her location to share what they have found.

•"Yeah, let's do this!" (Ruby excitedly screams) "Allright!" (Sun excitedly screams outside the window). "Sun?!" (Blake screams), "What are you doing outside our window???" (Yang angrily asks Sun while taking step forward). "Oh, y'know... just, hanging around? Anyway, let's do this team mission thing!"

•"You aren't on our team." Weiss sasses him. The girls then hear a knock on their door and Blake opens it, revealing Scarlet and Sage standing outside. Scarlet then barges ibto the girls room while complaing about how freezing the hallway's AC was. Sage asks Blake if he can come in, and she sighs before saying yes.

•"Whoa, there's a lot more people in here, hehe..." Ruby jokes before shrinking in on herself. Yang then starts to connect the dots before asking "wait a minuet, Sun are you spying on us?!"

•"Whaaat, spying??? That's crazy talk! And, we just got here anyway, so..." Yang then turns to Sage. "Headmaster Lionheart tasked us with investigating anything suspicious, and Sun suspected you all were up to something." Sage matter-of-factly states. "Dude, not cool." Sun tells his teammate.

•Weiss then creates a wind glyph behind Sun to blow him into the room. This also blows Neptune into the room.

•"Another one?!" Yang yells. Weiss then rushes past her and kneels next to Neptune. "Oh my light, Neptune! I'm so sorry! Are you hurt? Here, let me help you up!!" "Ow- I mean, I'm fine Snow Angel. Now please, don't hurt your pretty little hands helping me u- Ow!!" Neptune shrieks as Weiss helps him to his feet anyway. The rest of team RWBY roll their eyes at her.

•"Hooray, that boy bands all here! Now get out of our room and never come back!" Yang sarcastically tells team SSSN while pushing them out of the room.

•"Wait," Blake calls out to Yang, "having them with us... could be useful." "I-I second that notion!!!" Weiss jumps up. "Blake, we can't even trust them! What if they snitch on us to their headmaster?" Blake then walks up to Sun and looks him in the eye. Before she can speak, Sun starts up "Ok, I know what you're going to say and I just want you to know even if you were doing something against the rules I would never tell the authorities and I'm really sorry for spying and-" "Swear it. Don't spy on me or lie to me ever again." "... I swear it. Never again." Blake then smiles and turns to the rest of her team. "We can trust them."

•Yang sighs before saying, "Alright boys, my partner's giving you a second chance. Don't make me regret it!" Yang says while looking at a nervous Sun. "Now since your here, Ruby, what do you think they should do?" Ruby, who had been hiding in the corner underneath her cloak, jumps up, "Oh, uh, well Blake and Sun are both faunus so they should go to the rally and Sage and Yang are both big so they should go to togather so I guess that means me and Weiss will be going with Scar and Tune!!! Ahahaha, let's gooo!!!" Ruby then burts out of the room to catch her breath, which the rest of the girls catch onto.

•"Sigh, well Neptune, I guess we'll be alone togather out there..." "I wouldn't have it any other way, Snow angel." Neptune then takes Weiss' hand and they walk out the room togather. Scarlet whispers underneath his breath, "someone please shoot meee..." as he reluctantly follows them.

• The scene changes to Ruby, Weiss & Neptune, and Scarlet all at the CCT tower. Ruby is excited to see it, Weiss gives her exposition dump dump to the rest of the gang, Neptune flirts with her somemore, and Scarlet really doesn't want to be there. Ruby then drops her Scroll trying to take a picture, which gets picked up by Penny.

•Ruby asks Penny why she dissapeared at the Docks, Penny pretends she dosen't know her and runs away, Ruby chases after her, leaving Weiss with the two boys.

•Scarlet opts to wait outside for when Ruby returns, so Weiss and Neptune enter the CCT together.

•Inside the the Elevator, Weiss practices her smiles while standing in front of Neptune. However, Neptune is able to see her reflection across the silver walls of the elevator. "Know that you don't have to pretend to be happy with me, Snow Angel..." Neptune's sentiment surpises Weiss, and she almost cries. Before she can, the doors open. Weiss fixes herself, grabs Neptune's hand, and leads him into the communications room.

•As Weiss and Neptune walk over to her assigned cubical, all of the background shadow people stop and stare at the two of them, whispering "weiss schnee" and "neptune vasilias".

•As Weiss sits down at the cubical and readies herself for the call ahead, Neptune behind her with a comforting hand on her shoulder.

•"Thank you for calling the Atlas- Oh! Miss Schnee! Good afternoon! I'll patch you to your father immediatly!" "No-", before Weiss can finish, the operater switches to the CEOs private channel.

•"There you are Weiss," the voice of Jacques Schnee, Weiss' father comes through the channel, "I've been worried sick about you!"

•"Hello, father." Weiss says in fake nice tone. "I'm sorry if I made you worry about me, I've been so busy with my studies and-"

•"Cut the crap Weiss!" Jacques voice turns crass and cold. "You haven't been returning my calls, you've been ignoring my messages, you spend my money on clothes, and now your at Vale's CCT and your first thought isn't to call me!?"

•Weiss voice drops to an uncharacteristically submissive tone, "I really am sorry I-" "NO YOU ARE NOT!!!" "Father, I'm in public!" "I DON'T CARE!!! If this is how you act when I stop watching over you, then maybe you shouldn't be a huntress at all!!!" "...that's not fair." "Not fair??? What's not fair is that you have adoring fans worldwide that are wondering why their favorite idol is on hiatus? Oh yeah, she's in Vale playing huntress and putting on pounds!! Are you even watching what your eating?!"

•That lost comment increases the intensity of the whispering around Weiss and Neptune.

•"Weiss, who is gripping your shoulder???" Jacques commands his daughter tell him. Before she can respond, Neptune kneels down and faces Jacques directly.

•"Neptune Vasilias, sir. It's a pleasure to meet you Mr. Schnee." Neptune says in his charming voice. Jacques eyes go wide as he looks at him, "Weiss, you finnaly found a man! And he's rich!?! Foolish girl, why didn't you tell me sooner??? Oh, this news could get your mother to stop drinking!" Jacques then lets out a bellowing laugh at his own joke.

•"Wait I-", Weiss elbows Neptune to stop talking and eyes at him to play along. "Father, the real reason why I haven't been in contact was because I wanted to surpise you with my fiance Neptune here. I know you always worry me about having children soon, so... here he is!" Weiss says with an even faker smile. "Weiss, you know I don't like surpises! Ugh, they don't call you the smart Schnee for a reason, but at least young Vasilias here can more than make up for it aye my boy hahaha!"

•"Anyway, father, my you give me the files requested on my scroll?" "What do you want with those files." Jacques doesn't ask, but commands Weiss tell him. "Weiss and I are doing a joint school project on crime reports in the area, sir. I'm sorry we ask so much of you, but may we please have them?" Neptune saves Weiss again.

•"Hmm, normally I would say no... but not even I can say no to my future son in law! Here you go my boy!!" Jacques transfers the files, and Weiss + Neptune both breath a sigh of relief.

•"Oh, and Weiss," Jacques turns his attention back to his daughter, "do call again soon. You know how much I love you." Jacques then ends the feed right there.

•Weiss and Neptune march back to the elevator, and inside Weiss hugs tightly Neptune... before kissing him on the lips.

•Neptune is surpised at first, but reluctantly gives in.

•As they break away, Weiss takes a step back from Neptune, the two of them both have dour expressions on their faces.

•"Did... did you like it?" Weiss asks Neptune in a sad voice. Neptune takes a breath, and tells her "I did if you did."

•"I... didn't. Light, what's wrong with me? You're the perfect boyfriend and I'm just, I just..." ""... you're not the only one that has that problem." Weiss looks back up at Neptune, surpised. ""Every girl at my school loves me, but I just can't love them." as Weiss hears those words, she comes to a realization about him, and herself.

•"We might not be partners, but that doesn't mean we can't be friends." Weiss then hugs Neptune again before thanking him.

•Cut back to Ruby and Penny, the scenes where they talk, learn about Ironwood's robot army, get chased by Atlas guards, Penny stops a truck, then Penny reveals to Ruby that she is a robot, ending the first part.

•Part two begins exactly the same as vanilla Rwby: Penny explains she is the first ever gynoid to have an aura, Ruby tells Penny that she is real girl because she has a real soul (Ruby can see her soul using the third eye technique), Penny acidentally lets drop that the world is in danger and she was built to save it, etc.

•Cut to Yang and Sage, who have just arrived at Juniors club. The duo were talking about their relationship with the rest of their teammates off screen.

•"...and it's like, sometimes they treat me like I'm their mom! But I don't even know my mom!!!" Yang admits to Sage as tears streak down her face. "That's rough buddy." "This is the worst field trip ever!" (It's a joke).

•Yang's grand entrance to Junior's club is the exact same as vanilla rwby.

•Cut to Blake and Sun, who have just arrived at a public White Fang rally as it ended. Sun thinks they are two late, but Blake tells him that the public rally is just for show. The real White Fang rally would be in secret location after dark. Blake then realizes that a number of the Faunus that attended the rally are walking in the exact opposite direction as everyone else. Blake and Sun follow them to a building that has three claw marks scratched onto the door.

•"This is it." "You sure?" Blake glares at him and starts moving towards the entrance while unfastening her bow. "Y'know, I'm just gonna take your word for it."

•Inside, Blake and Sun are given Grimm masks and told to head down the right hall.

•"I don't get it. If you believe what you're doing is right, why hide who you are?" Sun asks Blake as they walk down the hall.

•"The masks are a symbol. Humanity called us grimmspawn, so we chose to don the faces of Grimm."

•"Grimm masks... that's kind of dark."

•"So was the guy who started it" Blake puts on the mask and walks down the hall.

•"Always sunshine and rainbows with you..." Sun puts on his mask and follows her lead.

•Inside the recruitment meeting room, a snake grimm masked man with tattoos is standing on a stage before the audiance.

•When Blake spots him, she whispers to herself "Nyeusi Mamba..." (that's his name).

•"Thank you all for coming. Sadly, Father Corsac could not join us tonight to welcome our awoken brothers and sisters..." As Nyeusi talks, Blake moves closer to the stage and Sun follows her.

•"...so allow me to introduce a very special instrument of ours! I can assure you, he is the key to obtaining what we have fought for for so long!"

•Roman Torchwick then walks onto the stage, with a short woman with heterochromia trailing behind him. "Thank you, thank you! Please, hold your applause!"

•A Deer Faunus standing behind Blake point's and yells "What's a human doing here?!"

•"I'm glad you asked, Dee- er, Miss! Now, I'll be the first to admit, humans... are the worst." Roman salutes as an example. "Case in point. So, I understand why you would like to see us all locked away, or, better yet, killed!"

•Sun leans over to Blake. "So, is he going somewhere with this?"

•"But, before the claws come out, I'd like to mention the fact that you and I all have a common enemy: the ones in control, the people pulling the strings, the dirty, rotten humans that run our kingdoms!" The crowd changes their tune and starts agreeing with him. "Councils, Atlesians, even the Academies: they're all to blame for your lot in life!" A few members of the crowd begin to cheer. "And they're all pests that need to be dealt with! Fortunately, I'm the best exterminator around!" (A mouse faunus makes a loud "Hey!" directed at Roman) "No offense to any rodents in the room."

•Roman then snaps his fingers, and the short woman behind him unveils their secret weapon: the Atlesian Paladin-290.

•Sun and Blake stare up at the mech. "Whoa, that's a big robot..." "How did he get that?"

•"As some of you may have heard, this right here," Roman taps the giant mech, "is Atlas' newest defense against all the scary things in the world. And thanks to my "employer", we've managed to snag a few before they, uh, "hit the shelves". Now, me and my friends have already started our new operation in the southeast. If you'd rather stay within the city, that's fine... But if you're truly ready to fight for what you believe in, this is the arsenal I can provide you. Any questions?" The White Fang's roaring applause tells him the answer.

•"I'm stopping this right now." Blake tells Sun before flipping onto the stage. "Wait what are you-"

•When Blake lands on the stage her Grimm mask falls off her face and lands on the floor, shattering like glass. The entire room of almost one hundred people is speechless.

•"My name is Blake Bête, daughter of Kali and Ghira Bête, founders of the White Fang!" Blake addresses to the crowd. Within seconds, their cheering becomes louder than it was for Roman.

•Blake then points to Roman, "This human 'collaborated' with our kind before, and what did it get them? Thrown into cages like animals, meanwhile he's here free!!" One Faunus tries to climb onto the stage, but Nyeusi kicks him down while trying to get them to calm down.

•"If princess kitty over here is so mad her brothers are in jail, then why did she throw them in their in the first place!!" Roman yells at the crowd. This shocks them into silence, and Blake's eyes grow wide in response. "As a matter of fact, your long lost princess has been kissing up to Weiss Schnee while masquerading as a human!!!" Roman than motions to the short woman behind him, and she snaps her fingers. Suddenly, a light projection pops up in front of the stage, showing an image of Blake (her bow on) huging Weiss at the docks from last volume. As soon as the light projection goes away, the crowd becomes dead silent.

•"That's not, I-" before Blake can finish, Nyeusi points at her, "So what Adam says is true, you've gone mad!" "Is that what he's been saying about me?!"

•Nyeusi than yells to the crowd, "Brothers and sisters, capture the beautiful beast! She's been bewitched by the humans!!!" Multiple Faunus start climbing the stage and Nyeusi starts charging Blake.

•Sun leaps towards Blake, "We gotta get out of here, now!" He then pulls out Burn and Wash Dust crystals from his pockets and throws them both onto the ground. This creates a massive smoke cloud that gives Blake and Sun enough time to escapes the building. However, as soon as they do, the mech poileted by Roman crashes through the walls of the building and starts chasing them.

either dismantled or reformed to the point of effectively no longer being the huntsmen institution as it exists in the present, yeah. and i mean.. two of the academies are straight up gone, and haven was closed by the mistrali council after lionheart’s death. the only one left operational is shade, and it’s facing strong cultural headwinds at the moment. so it’s uh, looking like pretty good odds that once the dust clears none of the academies will even be open, and then it’s a matter of… do they need to be replaced at all (are the grimm still the same threat? i don’t think the ending is going to be “hooray no more grimm!” because that’s tidy in a way rwby normally eschews, but one way or another i think they’re probably not going to stay as dangerous—either because they’re sapient beings and people find a way to broker peace with them, or because over the course of negotiating with salem and confronting the gods the heroes figure out better/more effective ways to deal with the problem, or even simply because it’s decided that concentrating all the fighting skill in a small, elite warrior class and leaving everyone else defenseless is not a great way to go about things) and if there is still a need for a dedicated anti-grimm institution, how can we improve on the critical failures of the old one and make it…not a system that just constantly pours children into the meat grinder of a forever war.

there’s also the thing where the huntsmen academies really exist to Fight Salem and Prepare Humanity For Eschaton and that’s… obviously not going to be necessary anymore, by the end of the story. so the motivation ozma specifically had for setting things up this way is no longer relevant, and ozma himself is unlikely to be calling the shots anymore because if he’s still alive he’ll be Just Some Guy again.

Multi-dimensional travel was supposed to be theory, but then again given that Peter had fought a purple alien and seem more strange things than any therapist could handle...maybe he shouldn't be surprised that it was real. The only problem was this universe seemed very odd indeed, particuarly with this version of Captain America being in complete denial about being Steve Rogers. All theories of the multiverse suggested that same face meant same person, just with different life experiences.

So when he finally caved and let Peter talk wit him, he assumed that was what was going to happen. What he got instead was the hulking size of a man pinned to his window and angrily growling in his ear about his real name. Peter was too stunned to really respond at first, not only at the act itself but what followed suit. Feeling that large bulge pressed against him, those filthy words that passed by his lips and holy shit this really couldn't be Steve. But...it had to be, this made no sense.

"O-Okay first of all, pretty sure there's a celebrity or two in this town that would disagree with the whole most influencial thing, probably a crime boss or two as well right?" He rambled, relying on his mouth to handle this since the reality of this situation was too insane to process if he thought about it too long. "love language" implies that they're communicating something affectionate, which obviously they have never done, ever! draco has never expressed anything but strictly platonic esteem for hermione and he violently resents any implication to the contrary, of course! /s

hermione i had to go by process of elimination. quality time, i don't think so, as hermione is usually pretty happy by herself; physical touch, definitely not, nor for draco — it's ron and harry who are the touchy ones, not her. (i also don't know a lot of only children who are physical touch people, to be honest.) gifts... probably don't do much for her, although she sincerely appreciates them, just because i never took hermione as someone who put much stock in physical items. words of affirmation touch her deeply — as you may have noticed, one of draco's hobbies is trying to get her eyes to "do the baby deer thing" — something something desire for approval, something something social insecurity vs validation, etc., etc. but it's not her language, because hermione is point-blank terrible at telling people how she feels, even when those feelings are affection.

acts of service is huge, though. hermione spends half of deathly hallows furiously battling the mantle of Mom Friend, which i do not think she really wants, and which, to whatever extent she picked it up, she did reluctantly, from necessity. she doesn't like cooking, but she does most of it anyway. that, combined with her doing ron and harry's homework for almost all six years of their education, was a dead giveaway that service to others Is Her Thing. she'll kvetch and whine and berate the boys for not handling their own business until the sun goes down, but at the end of the day, she will always, always bail them out. hermione granger is never not trying to save the people she loves.

meanwhile, I think draco's attention to Christmas gifts is a bit of a giveaway on his part. gift-giving among the extremely wealthy is a sort of weird thing, because ultra-expensive gifts don't mean any more than moderate or reasonably expensive ones do — it's all the same level of non-investment, from the rich person's perspective — it's just that obviously you're going to go with the ultra-expensive thing, Because You Can, and perhaps just as importantly, Because Others Can't. the ugly flipside to this is how catty draco gets about other people's presents to hermione, especially ron's. it's not so much that he doesn't like homemade or low-cost gifts — hermione gives him the same thing every year (lovely predictable girl) and he adores it, even though an album or two is a quite reasonably priced Christmas present for hermione's upper-middle-class family. but hermione's gift shows that she knows something about him, and has insight into what he'd enjoy. draco makes a point of giving her things that others can't, and she gives him things that others could, but wouldn't think to. which, in his eyes, makes them as rare to him (who could buy anything) as his expensive presents are to her (who couldn't). i think he's very into those performative displays of proprietary knowledge. he also pointedly notices when she wears his presents (which are, by not total happenstance, things that others will see her using); he likes knowing that she likes them, of course, but there's also a bit of spectacle in anything that expensive. because most people in gryffindor will know that hermione doesn't have Everfull Inkwell money out of pocket. and like, if Daphne Greengrass sees Hermione Granger rocking up in a winter coat straight from Wizard London Fashion Week, then uh, yeah, she's gonna know who's responsible.

okay but fair warning, this is a brainworm from 4am from some months ago so whether it makes sense or not is secondary to me having fun lol

basically, my line of thinking went like this; these two stories have similar names (just from different perspectives) -> there's a story about 'hidden remnant' too, is that about remnant or another world that's like remnant but different (two world / two perspectives?) -> raven and qrow have magic and the girl fell to a magical place so maybe they're from that magical place (where shapeshifting is everyday occurrence) and fell to remnant?

we don't know anything about the boy who fell from the sky besides... well, that it's a story with that name, but the girl who fell through the world kinda gives me raven vibes (ran away from the consequences of a choice, 'she brushed off her bumps and bruises for nothing hurt more than the loneliness in her chest', etc.) if you're also randomly(?) falling through the world, it helps having a semblance that makes a whole in time and space.

i've also speculated / theorized that yang inherited shapeshifting from raven and that she would learn how to do so in wonderland, so if there's a magical world where that is completely natural, what better place to learn it? (and maybe meet some extended family she didn't know even existed) (which, if raven portaling wonderland gang out does come up, could also lead to the twins returning home and feeling sad because "she wasn't the same girl anymore") (like imagine they had a good home in a magical world and through some shenanigans they ended up in a completely different world raised by bandits? sucks in the perfect branwen way)

it's also toying with an idea that the twins have in some way lost memories, because it uh. keeps coming up. kinda.

one of qrow's allusions is the scarecrow, who 'lacks a brain'; with these wizard of oz allusions, instead of these characters always having what they believe they lack, they lose what they had (usually when salem happens); lionheart was brave until he wasn't, ironwood had a heart until he threw it away. soooo.. 'lacking a brain' could be played as losing memories.

raven and qrow also allude to huginn and muninn, translated from old norse to thought and memory/mind, so there's another nod towards memories.

higanbana (name of the town raven and qrow met in) is a flower with many meanings behind it, one of them being lost memory.

finally, because i leave no stone unturned when it comes to crack theories, in V5 raven literally says "either i'm losing my memory or you've all lost your spines." and you know, she kind of, not completely but just tiny bit, lost her spine, so who's to say she didn't lose her memories at some point, too? checkmate.

all-in-all this is just a very long way of answering a question "if raven and qrow weren't originally from remnant, why wouldn't they remember?" with "they lost their memories. next."

(tbh this whole 'lost memories' business could be its completely own theory. i just tacked it here because i could)

Lionheart - Chapter Four

It was late in the morning, when Jaune walked sore and tired to Team ABRN’s dorm, knocked on the door, and was patiently waiting for a response, hoping it would be Arslan that answered.

A head of wild green hair peeking through the crack quieted that notice. “Yess?” She asked sleepily.

“Hi, I’m Jaune Arc, Arslan might have mentioned me?” Jaune rambled out, maybe a bit too quickly.

It took a minute for the girl’s eyes to focus on him, and a bit more for her to actually register him. “Oh, it’s you... How are you still alive?” She asked.

Jaune smiled. “I take pride in my Aura.”

She chuckled. “Heh, lucky Ars, I’m Reese, by the way, Reese Chloris.”

Jaune held out a hand to her. “Nice to meet you Reese, I hope we can be friends.”

Her eyes lit up, and she shook his hand vigorously, Jaune wincing as she pulled on his sore muscles. “Oh definitely, we’ll get on great!” A flash of insight then went through her brain. “You’re here for Arslan right,” She gave a sly smile. “Here for another date?”

Jaune blushed. “Maybe? I was hoping to teach her about using a Scroll?”

Reese paled. “Oh, you poor sap.”

Jaune looked at her worried. “What’s that suppose to mean?”

Reese opened the door, showing she was in her pajamas, “Come on in, you can wait for Ars with me.”

Jaune entered. “Seriously, though what’s that suppose to mean?”

“Uh, you’ll find out.” Reese said taking a seat on the only chair in the room.

“Fine, so where is everyone?” Jaune asked looking around the room, which was half-sparkling clean and half-disaster zone, with no in between.

“Oh, um, give me a second,” Reese said thinking. “Still early, so Nadir is probably down in the kitchens cooking, while Bolin is probably mediating.”

‘They sound like the two great parts of Ren,’ Jaune thought.

“So, where’s Arslan?”

“Just call her Ars,” Reese said. “All her friends, do.”

“Alright, where is Ars at?” Jaune asked, getting used to the new name.

“Good, anyway she should be out any moment?” Reese admitted finally, leaning back in her chair. “In three, two, and one.” Counting down with her outstretched fingers.

A door opened, Jaune turned his head in time with Reese to see Arslan exited the bathroom, steam billowing out behind her.

Thankfully, she was dressed, but Jaune still burned the sight into his mind of Arslan dressed in shorts and bandages covering her chest, her dark brown abs flexing as water slid down the rivets between the muscles, the shorts riding high showing almost all of her powerful legs on full display with the bandages doing nothing to hide her slender, powerful shoulder and delicious looking neck and nape as she left the steaming room.

“Shower’s empty,” Arslan said to the room, drying her hair and not looking around the room.

Jaune gawked not able to take his eyes off the Golden Lion of Haven, he had seen his fair share of women, most of them related to him, but she was unlike any woman he had seen before.

It sent his heart into overdrive, stomach fluttering, and face redder than Pyrrha’s hair.

Reese was taking in the view much more casually, with a smirk. “Ars, you got a visitor.”

Arslan froze in place, her head ground on her neck like stone as she turned to see Jaune standing in the room with her, drinking her in.

“Hi,” Jaune said nervously, waving his hand at her.

“Hi,” She said waving back, then pointed at her bed. “You can have a seat, if you want.” Then like a flash of lightning she dragged Reese into the bathroom.

“Why didn’t you tell me he was here?” Arslan hissed at her.

Reese shrugged smirking. “Why didn’t you check you Scroll?”

Arslan’s grip tightened. “We both know I can’t do that!”

Reese squirmed out of Arslan’s grip. “Well, hopefully that’ll change today. Your boytoy is here to help, the poor sap.”

“What does that mean?” Arslan asked Reese.

Reese smirked harder.

Arslan threw up her hands. “Fine then! Take a shower, or whatever,” She walked through the door, then half-turned around. “But, seriously what does that mean?”

Reese closed the door.

Leaving Arslan and Jaune alone in the room, if you didn’t count Reese leaning against the door.

“So,” Jaune led.

“Yes.” Arslan agreed.

“So, um, yeah, good morning?” Jaune said to the stiff as a board Arslan.

“Good morning, to you as well.” She said politely.

Jaune smiled at the rigid and tense Arslan, then sighed getting up. “Sorry, I’m making you uncomfortably, I’ll leave.”

“No!” Arslan moved in-between him and the door.

“What?”

“No, you are not leaving.”

“But, you don’t really seem happy with me here.”

“I am, though.” She said with a slight pout. “Just surprised. I didn’t know you were coming by today.”

“I didn’t want to stay away,” Jaune mouth moved before his brain could process what he said.

The pair blush, and Jaune wanted to punch himself, but Arslan felt her heart skip a beat. She made a quick decision and tackled him to the bed.

Jaune yelped as he fell onto her bed with Arslan. “Ars?”

“You called me, Ars?” Arslan said surprised.

“Yeah, Reese said that I should call you that, was it bad?”

Arslan wrapped her arms tighter around him. “No, I like it. I give you permission.”

“Oh, thank you.” Jaune’s arm moved unconsciously pulling Arslan against him, not that he’d ever consciously complain.

The Lionheart couple laided there happy, forgetting that Jaune had come here to teach her how to use a Scroll properly.

Till Jaune remembered a couple minutes later.

“Oh, I guess I should show you, how to work this thing?” Jaune led with, cause Reese to blush as all she heard so far was a crash and that.

“Yeah, I suppose,” Arslan said a little childishly, not wanting their moment to end yet.

Jaune sat up and leaned against the wall, Arslan pulling herself up with him, but still sticking to him like glue, or syrup, perhaps.

“So, let’s see it?”

Arslan nodded and pulled out a beaten up and damaged scroll.

Jaune looked at it. “Does it work?”

Arslan blushed.

“Ok, can I see it?”

Arslan handed him it.

“Arslan, I think I know the problem... Because I did the same thing, you accidentally channeled your aura into it and blew out the dust batteries, didn’t you?”

The Lion of Haven did not blush, but her cheeks lit up in a way resembling a blush, that was only for Jaune to see, but she did nod her head slow and mechanically. “Yes...”

Jaune laughed. “That something we have in common then,” A kind smile on his face, “I blew out like seven of them before I learned to control my aura,” His smile then dropped. “Boy was Ren and Pyrrha mad at me, I still owing them money, but I don’t get why Pyrrha makes me pay her by cosplaying though,” He leaned in close. “Last time I was bunny boy.”

Arslan tilted her in confusion as she tried to process why Pyrrha wanted to dress up Jaune, then imagined him in a bunny-boy outfit, and unconsciously licked her lips. ‘She has good taste.’

“So, uh, what scroll is this.”

Arslan cover her face and held up two fingers.

“Oh, just two that’s not too bad... wait,” Arslan shook her head, and Jaune gave a surprised gasp. “Oh, twenty... that’s pretty bad, how long have you had this one?”

“Six months,” Arslan said quietly.

“What?! Why, would you wait so long to replace this one?”

“I didn’t want to keep bothering them, I just kept breaking them and... thought I’d just leave them alone.”

“Hey, it’s not you’re fault, well not all your fault, we just need to get you a heavier duty scroll. Have you been getting the same model.” Arslan nodded. “Well that’s part of the problem, some scroll just can’t deal with Aura, so um, lets get you a better one, I’m sure Beacon’s got some.” Jaune said firmly, grasping her arms and leading her off the bed.

“Wait!” Arslan said.

“What is it? Something wrong?”

“I should put on my robe...” Arslan said. “Unless, you want others to see-”

“NO!” Jaune said with a sudden fierce possessiveness. “Sorry, uh yeah, great idea.”

After a two hours the pair left Beacon’s Scrollstore, “See, that’s how it works, easy right?”

Arslan face lit up with a smile, showing Jaune how much prettier she was when she smiled, turning a perfect ten into a eleven, no, a twelve. 

Arslan herself was happier than ever, her inability to have a scroll that didn’t catch fire in a couple minutes was a constant depressant to her mood, another thing that separated her from the rest of the Hunters and Huntresses in training.

Then Jaune tapped his scroll to hers with a chime. “There, now I’m in your contacts, you talk to me whenever, and we can schedule dates and stuff, oh, I’m getting ahead of myself. Uh, I guess I’ll go, see you later?” Jaune said starting to back away, only to realize he could get away, as Arslan had a firm hold on his arm.

“No.” She said simply.

“Oh.” Jaune responded simply. “Do you want to stay together then? Maybe the rest of the day?

“Yes.” She nodded simply.

“Alright, what should we do first?”

“Train,” Arslan said with toothy grin, that brought equal parts joy, excitement and slight dread to Jaune’s heart.

“Oh, joy.”

Then she dragged Jaune away to the training grounds.

first things first: I want everyone who has ever called him a liar to pay me $20 and then turn in a 40 page essay on how he's a liar, MLA format, sources cited.

now, onto that. everyone harps on ozpin for lying. keyword: lying. they call him a liar, they say they can't trust him, etc. let's talk about this. keeping secrets is not lying. lying is intentionally FALSE statements / information.

so, with that, let's count the number of times ozpin has GENUINELY LIED. that'll be a total of one (1) time. what lie was this? the relic having questions.

this ENTIRE time, everyone has been dragging this poor man by the ankles and punching at him while he's down when he's lied... once.

he's kept secrets, he's kept information to himself. that, by definition, is not lying. keeping secrets is not giving false statements. to keep calling him a liar is inaccurate.

now, let's move onto the way the narrative paints him.

"he forced pyrrha to be the maiden. he didn't give her a choice. he told her to pick or everyone would die. he guilt tripped her." — to that I say, no he didn't. he explained the gravity of the situation. if he didn't tell her the heavy parts, everyone would've ripped him to shreds because he "didn't warn her". he explained what he felt she needed to know: they needed someone to take the other half of amber's power. it's a big decision to make and it will change your life. there are people out there who want their hands on this power and we don't want the wrong person to have it, like cinder. you can take your time to choose. if you don't, we will consider another option.

he gave her the information she needed and he gave her time to think about it. when she accepted, he continuously asks her for consent and if she truly wants this. she said yes multiple times.

on that note, he is not responsible for her death. he told her to LEAVE when cinder attacked. he told her to go get qrow, james and glynda, and then get to safety with the rest of the students. SHE chose to come back and fight cinder all on her own. jaune even begged her not to do it before she shoved him in a locker and launched him away. ozpin is not responsible for her death.

"he's evil because he tried to leave salem and take their kids" — okay so clearly male abuse victims don't exist to you or the narrative. ozma was MANIPULATED by salem. jinn says as much: "the hearts of men are easily swayed." this is said over salem goading ozma into being a false god with her. he continuously questioned their choices, he was consumed with guilt, his host even asked him wtf was going on.

when their daughter came into her power, ozma decided to lay the truth out, and with it came the horror of salem wanting to USE their daughters to start a new generation of magic-users. she SAID it, right to his face. he BACKS AWAY IN DISGUST AND HORROR. his logical thought then was to LEAVE. wouldn't you if your spouse decided they wanted to use your children??

it astounds me because if the roles were reversed, ozma would be the villain and salem would be justified in leaving. interesting, isn't it?

next, we have the girls ripping his past away from him and then blasting him for hiding information. this... look, I don't care how "urgent" it was, there is NO excuse for doing this. if this had happened to blake when she was keeping secrets about being in the white fang or being with adam, the characters and audience would be livid, especially when the white fang were written as dangerous terrorists and adam was written as an abuser. they're dangerous, they posed threats. if this had happened to blake, if someone forced her trauma out into the open, they would be in the wrong. but because it's ozpin, it's fine.

moving on. "lying about lionheart." — this is just ridiculous. telling the world "hey, the headmaster of haven, who was a faunus by the way, was actually the one behind huntsmen dying and the attack on the school as well as contributing to the fall of beacon." it sends a BAD message and sets the human-faunus relationship back even further. ozpin chose not to tell the people about lionheart betraying them because not only would it cause issues, he also says that he would rather people believe in all the good leo had previously done. your mistakes don't define you, that kind of logic.

"oz lied about the lamp attracting grimm" — no he didn't. he didn't SAY that it did. that's not a lie. he kept it a secret so the students wouldn't worry and actually attract grimm. which, by the way, interesting how that "attraction" seemed to have disappeared by the time v7 and 8 dropped. never once saw grimm following them around because of the lamp. the only grimm that actively attacked were the ones coming through the hole in the wall. weird, huh? almost like the story NEEDED something for the characters to be mad at oz about.

anyway, I'm gonna move on. the fact that ozpin received ZERO apologies and / or sympathy, especially from those we'd expect it from (ruby, weiss, blake) is infuriating. EMERALD was forgiven in a heartbeat, and she actively helped cause the fall of beacon, she helped kill penny, she killed a faunus in vale to prove a point to cinder (who got mad at her for, btw), she helped frame yang into "attacking" mercury so she'd look violent, she worked for salem by proxy of cinder. emerald did way much worse than ozpin, and she was forgiven !! in that same episode, ozpin is given dirty looks and "hm, idk if we can still trust you." hell, HE apologized. he had NOTHING to apologize for. these kids were in the wrong, especially when they lied throughout all of volume seven and then were justified for it. "you're not like oz, you're trusting people to prove themselves first." uh. you mean like ozpin was doing???? these students actively lied to ironwood for most of v7 until it finally caught up to them, and then they were STILL in the right. yet they got on ozpin and still reprimand him.

idunno man, I'm so tired. this isn't even the half of it but I'm angry all over again.

in any case, ozpin isn't perfect, he has made some really stupid mistakes (CCT towers that cause global disconnection when one tower falls, etc.), but like, he's not the devil either.
