Hello! I've been looking through your blog trying to piece together your au story and I have a question. How does Quaritch's timeline play out?
I understand that he found Kai and Leo when he was still human and adopted them, that's why Kai and Leo are pictured holding baby Spider. And I understand that he later takes in Lo'ak and kidnaps Spider after he becomes a recom.
But what I don't understand is what happened in the middle? Human-Quaritch was dead for 15 years before the recombinant was created. What happened to Kai and Leo while he was dead? If 15 years passed, why do Kai and Leo look like they're not that much older than Lo'ak and Spider?
Ok so
While still being human Quaritch finds 1 year old Leo and adopts him. It takes place 10 years before the canon events
Tumblr media
He raises him with help from his squad (uncle Lyle, aunt Maria (Walker) and others
Tumblr media
Then, 9 years later Spider (or MJ - Leo calls him that) is born, and Leo is very excited to be an older brother
Tumblr media
But when the battle ends the way it does, they put Leo in cryo (like the main character of Frontiers of Pandora, only in different place).
Kai is halfbreed between an avatar and na’vi. When the battle happened he was only 1 year old. When he was 8 his parents die and he lives in forest alone since then.
But when he’s 12 he finds Leo’s cryo capsule. Then they start to live together
Tumblr media
With time they become very close
So Kai only knows Quaritch through Leo's stories
When recom Quaritch arrives at Pandora Leo is 15 and Kai is 16
I hope this all isn't too confusing😅
Btw soon I’ll post another mini comic, about Leo this time

The Songs of Freedom Chapter 1: Sätarep
Tumblr media
Characters: Sarentu OC named Kirani, Teylan, Nor, Ri’nela, Alma, Mercer, So’lek and eventually Eetu
Synopsis: You’re one of the Sarentu children abducted from your clan, having been put through the RDA’s brainwashing program called TAP Con-1 you find yourself waking up from a deep sleep you don’t remember taking as a resistance member storms the headquarters saving you all.
Warnings: None; just angst, ptsd mentions of past abuse, and childhood trauma
Word Count: 1k
Sätarep is na’vi for rescue
Tumblr media
The distant humming of machinery slowly invades your eardrums, with its unfamiliar sound arousing you from this deep slumber you’ve apparently been in. Your lashes begin to flutter as if coming out of a deep lucid dream, feeling your fingers twitch gently coming back to life. The echoes of thrumming technology somehow begin to get clearer and clearer opening your eyes to harsh fluorescent lighting. Your limbs feel stiff and unmoving, as your feeble attempt to rise up is met with an awkward thud. You try once more and look around you as your eyes struggle to adjust to your surroundings. Looking to your left you see a confused Ri’nela almost mirroring all of your own actions.
Your heart begins to pick up speed, fueling the confusion with an uneasy sense of dread. “W-what happened?” You hear a soft whimper from Teylan, as you whip your head to the sound of his voice. You rub your eyes for good measure swinging your long limbs out of what seems to be a cryo chamber. “What?” You croak out. Your vocal chords strain themselves from lack of use, clearing your throat for good measure. “You made it.”
You look to see Teylan, Nor, and Ri’nela all slowly rise in disorientation out of their cryo beds looking to the source of the sound; Alma. “Oh… I’m so sorry…” You hear a tightness in her voice that sends an eery chill of doubt down your spine. “Alma what is this? What happened?” Ri’nela asks urgently.
You jump out of the cryo chamber capsule and run next to Teylan as the group forms out of defense like you used to do as children. “I….I’m so sorry…all of you.” Alma hesitates to speak. Nor’s expression slowly dissipates from the skepticism… to realization. “You did this to us?” He accuses harshly.
All four of you exchange silent looks of horror, turning to Alma as she struggles to explain herself. “They made me. When the war started it was this or….” She trails off in an awkward stutter. “You betrayed us?” Nor steps closer to her, causing a cautious step back on her behalf.
Your mind begins to spin out control in a state of shock like an ice bath being injected straight into your veins. “How long have we been in cryo sleep for Alma?” You ask reluctantly. You and Ri’nela exchange a worried look and turn back to Alma watching her close her eyes in shame and sigh.. “15 years..” Her words feel like a blow to your chest, with the air from your lungs completely seizing all at once. 15. 15 years of suspended animation? How was this possible?
“No no that can’t be possible we would’ve remembered!” Ri’nela pleas out. You can see the fear seeping into her eyes as she slowly comes to the realization that the mentor you looked up to as children would betray you this. “You don’t understand! Mercer ordered to have the rest of you killed, as the battle started.. I stowed you away to save your lives.. I never wanted this to happen.” She raises her hands frantically waving them as a metaphorical white flag.
“Oh my god..” You whisper, grasping what she’s done, weighing like stones in your heart. “You evil bitch!” Nor launches himself at Alma, just as the red emergency alarms blare into the room loudly. All of you freeze in panic looking around the dark room now lit with an insidious red glow just as a loud explosion occurs. The sound of distant screaming and machine guns echos in the hallway getting closer and closer to you, “What’s going on!?” Teylan’s voice panics at the loud sounds.
Your ears fill with the hissing from the many rounds of ammunition hearing the RDA soldiers fight this mystery intruder. “Go! Get out of here, now’s the chance-” Alma attempts to plea as Nor digs a sharp object into her abdomen. Before you can even process what he’s done a large figure rushes out of the corridors into the main room. A tall slender Na’vi decked out in military gear and war paint carries a large machine gun looking around the space slowly. All of you stand together stunned with terror and uncertainty watching Alma choke on her own blood falling with a loud thud.
The slender Na’vi man speaks “You are Sarentu?” His voice booms with confidence watching you all with a stoic look on his face you can’t quite pinpoint. “Sarentu… No one has ever called us that.” You reply with a shaky voice. The way his lips curl up into a smile sends a shiver down your spine. “Come. You no longer have to live at the mercy of the sky demons.” He replies. He straps his gun behind his back stepping nonchalantly over a writhing Alma, and up to the group of you. “Stay back!” Nor points with his handcrafted weapon, but it doesn’t seem to bother this man in the slightest.
“If you wish to live, follow me.” He nods his head in the direction of the emergency exit door to the far right. “How can we trust you? Who are you!” Ri’nela demands. The stranger stands tall and takes a sympathetic sigh, “I am So’lek, member of the Resistance against the sky people. Once Trr’ong, and a warrior of my clan. I thought the Sarentu were long extinct, but new intel has proven me wrong. Get your belongings and follow me.” He says with booming conviction.
The four of you all exchange looks, slowly thinking about the chances you’d even have alone in the facility, having just been woken up from a 15 year sleep you don’t remember taking. You swallow your pride and blooming fear, as Ri’nela speaks “Where are you taking us?”
So’lek smiles back, “Resistance HQ, we are a movement made up of both Na’vi and human allies..” You observe the way he hesitantly states the last part of his sentence, as if reluctant to credit the humans of being considered credible allies. “We have no choice. We’d die here without Alma. Mercer will kill us all..” You state frantically.
All of you begin to salvage whatever items you hold dear, which include a toothbrush, grey t shirts, and a bead you saved from when you a child that you assumed a family member gifted you. You scatter together awkwardly looking at the lack of possessions you all own after being completely stripped of your native identity your entire lives. A wave of guilt and doubt riddle your mind, thinking about how you’re about to leave behind, all you’ve ever known.
“Let’s get of this hellhole once and for all!” Nor shouts. “This isn’t a good idea! How do we even know we can trust him! Mercer has given us everything we’ve ever needed!” Teylan begins to get hysteric. You see his eyes widen in clear fright as you follow So’lek to the emergency exit, “We have no choice Teylan! We belong in the forest! Pandora is our home!” You can’t help but yell in frustration. You all knew what this metal box has done to you. The house of horrors has done nothing but inflict physical and emotional trauma on the four of you. And it ends today.
“Come… Your new life awaits you.. all of you.” So’lek smiles. Just as you make way to follow So’lek out the emergency door you hear the thud of loud footsteps. “There they are! Get them!” Mercer’s voice echoes in your ears, as you all scream to escape. “Run!” So’lek shouts making sure one by one you step out the door as he releases rounds of bullets at the soldiers.
The group of you narrowly clear out and awkwardly thud onto the lush grass of Pandora. Staring at ground, you slowly rise and take in your new surroundings. The distant memories of your life before TAP are all but a blur. Cloudy visions of a lullaby, a bonfire, swimming in a river, and eating delicious fruit feel like a dream. “Oh my god.” Nor whispers in wonder.
Back when you were children anyone who spoke of the forest would be placed in solitary confinement as a punishment. You and Nor spent the most time there.. “We should go back! This was a mistake!” Teylan whimpers in fear. “No this is home. We belong here.” Ri’nela states. “Do it for Aha'ri.” You look to each other with sad eyes, tears brimming at the thought of your dead sister who lost her life to an attempt to escape all those years ago. In that moment, you knew you’d rather die than ever go back to this place again. “Follow me!” So’lek suddenly bursts through the doors and runs into you, watching him in horror as the sound of guns continue. You all take off into a sprint following him into the thick of the Pandora jungle, running into your newfound freedom.

takes a deep breath. ik it hasn't even been a day but we need to talk about the umbrella academy season 4. obviously spoilers ahead. and a long, long fucking post full of complaints.
this season got me shinji chairing so hard. what the fuck. six episodes that last barely an hour each and all for THAT ending? don't get me wrong, the ending itself is... not the worst possible outcome, ig, but like. plot holes so big i can fit five's ego in there and still have spare space.
yeah, let's start from there. what the fuck was that? a half-assed five/lila romance was the last thing we needed. call me a hater, tell me i don't know how to appreciate complex stories, idc. that sucked ass. not only is it creepy in so many ways, but it also brought absolutely NOTHING to the story. "oh but if that didn't happen then five wouldn't have accidentally wandered into the station's coffee shop and met himself" I DON'T GIVE A SHIT!!!! IT COULD'VE HAPPENED IN SO MANY DIFFERENT WAYS!!!!!! AND FIVE KNOWS BETTER THAN TO THROW HANDS WITH HIS BROTHER OVER A GIRL WHILE THE REST OF THEIR SIBLINGS ARE FIGHTING THE DAMN BLOB OF DEATH!!!
moving on ig. i don't like how allison's past actions seemed to be simply forgotten. i know they acknowledge it a couple times and that it's been six years, but lord almighty she assaulted luther, got him killed, and betrayed her entire family for a father that never cared about any of them. i don't think i could forgive that so easily (i'm looking at you klaus).
about the plot holes. first off, i would've appreciated even just a slight explanation of what the fuck reginald and abigail are? are they aliens? are they robots? are they alien robots? also, side note, what the fuck did reginald even do to grace atp? did he create a robot in the image of a human lady or did he turn the human lady into a robot???? and back to abigail for a moment: ?????????? and also the obsidian hotel????? AMERICA EXPLAIN. EXPLAIN
more plot holes: the solution to the cleanse problem. five said that the only way to fix the timelines is to let the cleanse happen, aka absorb them, so that the marigold inside them is destroyed since that's what split the timelines, no? and they made a big deal out of lila leaving because they needed all of the marigold holders to partake in this. except that YOU EIGHT IDIOTS ARE NOT ALL THE OCTOBER 1ST KIDS IN THE WORLD. THERE'S MORE, THAT WAS LIKE 43 WOMEN WHO GAVE BIRTH YOU DUMB FUCKING CUNTS. WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER 35 KIDS. uhm. sorry about that. moving on.
did not like how jennifer's character was treated at all. no time to develop, no time to get us to know her. straight to the blob of death without even explaining what was going on. how did the durango end up in her body? who even created that anyways? how did she end up in a damn fucking giant squid? why was she talking about the cleanse? what the fuck? listen im sure the comics explain this and ik this show is supposed to be a bit... confusing and nonsensical, but this is info you can't just leave out. feels like lazy writing.
and how the fuck did the cleanse cult even know that this nonesense that a kid coming out of a squid was blabbering about was connected to them having dreams of other timelines? how the fuck did jean and gene know? what?
yk what, im also gonna throw in some more personal points of view in here. i did not understand a single thing about the timeline/universe/whatever they ended up in at the end of s3. is it a new universe? if so, why is everything the same and WHY is the timeline still fucked? and where's the academy in this timeline? does it not exist? why? why and how is abigail still alive? was she even dead in s1, on the moon? or was that a cryo capsule? if so, why keep her there?
and there's more folks! why did the timeline train not stop at lila and five's stop? that was random and never explained, and feels like lazy writing, again. or like an excuse to get a specific two people to mingle just to create an unnecessary and unwanted love triangle? perchance?
lastly, how can claire and lila and diego's children still exist if their parents were erased from existence? and since they still exist but their parents never did, how does it work? do lila's parents just look after these random kids? without reason? wouldn't not having existing parents at all create legal problems?
overall, i have a lot of issues with this season. it feels extremely rushed, and honestly quite boring in comparison to the other three. and the lack of explanations makes it so hard to enjoy because i'm busy being confused. im not so mad about the ending, i kinda saw it coming (my choice was between they all die or they get stuck in a loop), and I don't think it's necessarily a bad ending for a story like this one. i am a bit sad, yes, and i will miss these characters and regret the fact that they didn't get the lives they deserved, but i think it's an ok ending. not the best, but ok. but the rest of the season? ass. yet another show absolutely ruined by netflix's inability to see past money and actually produce a good ending instead of rushing things. peace ✌️

Can you do a fallout 4 companions react to a sole survivor who be put back into cryo, whether it be it by a weapon (the cryolator) or into a machine (like the vault tech pods) temporarily and dealing with it and the aftermath? I can just imagine a sole survivor would be terrified to be put back and lose another lifetime again against their will
Sole’s pre-war immune system was too weak for the new world. The smallest click on a geiger counter had them downing RadAway. They needed a stimpack for every rusty cut or the scar immediately scabbed over with mysterious hives. But when they developed a rare abnormality in their chest, the only cure was slowing -- or stopping -- their heartbeat for what the doctor affectionately called a factory reset. And the only cryopod capable of curing Sole was the one they stepped inside over 200 years ago.
Cait: Cait was drained of all her usual aggression, instead replacing the emotion with gentle sincerity that soothed Sole’s nerves like a cool balm. She knew stressing Sole with her own anxieties wasn’t good for their health, and so she only spoke encouragement as Sole stepped into the cryopod. “I’ll be right here when ya wake, love.” The last thing Sole saw was her hand pressed against the glass. When they eventually awoke, Cait was attentive and full of vulgar stories to cheer them up. She even teased that if Sole hadn’t made it she called dibs on their Pip-Boy.
Codsworth: He was the biggest mess of anyone as Sole was loaded into the cryopod. “As General Atomic’s finest machinery, I have impeccable memory sir/mum.” His voice modulator shook worse than his rattling metal body. “It feels like only yesterday you were sent to this vault. Please come back to me again.” Sole felt too bad for Codsworth to think about their own fear. When they awoke, Codsworth was the first to pry and prod at them during their health exam.
Curie: “Do not worry, Sole. Vault Tec’s cryostasis capsules use the safest technology available.” Curie hurried alongside Sole as they approached the cryopod. She hugged the stacks of notes and textbooks she’d been reading on the subject to her chest. “It will only feel like just a moment. Well, I suppose you already know. But this time, you have friends waiting for you on the other side.” When Sole awoke, Curie was just as diligent in assisting with their recovery -- both physically and mentally -- as any other doctor.
Danse: Danse hardly trusted pre-war technology, let alone something from the wretched Vault Tec. However, he wasn’t about to fill Sole’s head with his conspiracies and ravings about the unsavory corporation. And Sole probably agreed with him anyways. Instead, Danse stayed positive and told Sole they would be perfectly safe. It felt an awful lot like lying, but Danse didn’t want to stress Sole further. When Sole emerged from the cryopod, Danse made sure they got adequate mental health treatment for what he assumed would be a tumultuous time for their PTSD.
Deacon: “Did anyone order a vault dweller on the rocks?” Deacon tried to keep Sole’s spirits high with his usual jokes and antics. But when his joviality started to come off as being uncaring, Deacon pulled Sole aside to assure them that everything would be fine. The doctors and scientists knew what they were doing, and he’d stay near the cryopod for as long as it took for Sole to get better. Just as he watched them emerge from the vault, Deacon would have their back from inside. After Sole was released from cryostasis, Deacon was back to his joking self, even claiming Sole talked in their sleep while frozen.
Hancock: Hancock found the entire idea of cryostasis interesting. The adventure of being frozen felt like taking a chem and knowing you’d be ghoulified. Sole didn’t share his sentiments. Instead of dwelling on the whole getting re-frozen aspect, Hancock distracted Sole with a night out. The two drank and sang off-key at the Third Rail, and even rolled into the vault hungover. When Sole emerged from the cryopod, Hancock made sure to stay both gentle and sober towards them in case they needed to talk.
MacCready: “I can’t imagine what you’re going through.” The thought of Sole afraid of anything made MacCready’s stomach churn. He would never tell Sole to tough it out or pretend they were fine with going back into cryostasis. Instead, MacCready lets Sole vent about their fears up until the day they go inside the pod. Once Sole is thawed, MacCready takes their mind off it with a day shopping in Diamond City. He even buys Sole some of Takahashi’s noodles, which was touching because MacCready never shares his caps.
Preston: Preston double, triple and quadruple-checked with Sole’s doctors that the cryostasis would be safe. Didn’t they know how triggering this would be for Sole? Didn’t they care? Regardless, Preston made sure that Sole knew he would be there every step of the way. He was the last person Sole saw while being frozen, and the first when they were thawed. Preston let Sole vent to him about the horrible memories the entire procedure dredged up. He knew what it was like to be pushed beyond his limits with no one to catch him.
Piper: Piper was a little disappointed Sole wouldn’t let her cover the story for the paper, but was still very supportive of Sole throughout the process. Vault Tec reminded her too much of the Institute for Piper to be anything but nervous for her friend. When Sole was taken from the cryopod, Piper personally vetted anyone who came to visit her favorite companion. “Can never be too careful, Blue,” she explained. “The Institute had you once. I’m not letting them take you again.” Piper also donates stacks of old newspapers for Sole to read while recovering.
Nick: “You’re the bravest of us all, kid,” Nick Valentine assured. “If anyone can get back in that pod, it’s you.” Perhaps Nick coddled Sole through the process, but he didn’t care. If Sole wanted to cry, he lent his shoulder. If they needed to vent, he lent his ear. When Sole eventually emerged, Nick was patient with Sole’s emotional outbursts. He struggled with hard memories, too. And always wanted someone to be just as kind with him.
X6-88: “I still think this technology is too archaic for your intended use with it. If you gave the Institute a few years, we could develop something much safer.” Sole reminded X6 that they didn’t have a few years, so the courser did everything to make the ordeal easier on them. He needed the future leader of the Institute at their best. When Sole woke up, he was quick to make sure they were properly fed and tended to by doctors.

There was one, and only one, visual attempt to bring more bots to join the Lost Light, and that was back in the day when Rewind made his film: "Little victories" which was hated at the moment but acclaimed by the psychiatrists left on Cybertron and the media critics (two faceplated bastards) centuries after.
It was a hard blown at the moment, it was even mocked on at some point, and somehow Rodimus was more mad about the whole deal than the director himself.
No more entrance of new bots made things difficult, especially after the whole new-reality-dont-tell-a-soul-I'm-looking-at-you-Swerve deal, the new quest been to find lost treasures, adventures and thrilling emotions! But it was hella expensive by the way! And it made things short in their new adventure, coming back to Cybertron when no one didn't want to with the fear of having a very much prepared Prowl awaiting for the quantum engines.
But, guess what? This Prowl seemed to be less of an aft and actually tried to do his own, it only needed to have Perceptor make a full scanner to have it working, and that's it, that was everything that was needed, why didn't the original Prowl make the same? The consensus falled on him being such a prick, and also that this new Prowl had a human working on the council, telling him to be less radical.
Fort Max almost laughed in his faceplate and even attempted to rise that human femme of red helm in the air for all to see.
Nevertheless, both Megatron and Ultra Magnus should have seen this coming, and while Megatron wasn't as familiar with humanity above destroying their very atom with his cannon, Magnus should have know better after cycles living with Verity before she gave herself the authority to join the Wreckers back on Earth, Verity and this human femme had that same sly aura on them, Minimus, while not being an spectralism practician, just knew that something was up.
And so, only a few cycles before the energon stock was as it's peak and the mechanism were tuned to semi perfection, Rodimus allowed, while shouting, the entrance of a complete new portion of humans aboard just to spite Thunderclash, who only praised Rodimus due to his great and big spark (as if), Red Alert almost collapsed to the floor when the capsules full of humans in cryo-sleep were accepted as he was already fearing an outbreak of some rare and gross organic disease because he was just so sure of it, how can't you see the possibility of a major-
Anyway, it had only been a few earthling years of the humans aboard the Lost Light, it was supposed to be as laid down as possible since it was a test, it was only supposed to be working for almost 10 earthling years, but 10 years became 15, then 20 while the population was increasing aboard, and sooner than later Smokescreen was showing some friends back on Cybertron a few photos before-
"What is that?"
It was almost cropped out of the image, but everyone could still see it, he, a human male, little, a young spark, smiling contently to the camera, "Oh, yeah, we have this thing about having humans in the ship, this one is called John, little fellow is Grapple's pair buddy-"
"You", someone called out to Smokescreen, pointing at him like he said Unicron was back, "you're telling me you live with humans and never said a word to us?"
"Uh"
"What is a pair buddy?"
In the recent years, a rumor going around stated that humans were good for the spark and for the mind, and, while it was kind of off-putting how much the humans looked like them but with flesh, it was even said that humans were good company for the most scarred in medical and phycological problems.
Learning that the Lost Light, all this time, had humans, obviously catched the interest of most, and the fact that you could get a human?! (It wasn't exactly like that but the idea was already on the mind of many).
So imagine the surprise Red Alert had when, while rushing some of the kids back to the starship before launching, found said kids looking at bots that weren't part of the actual crew, shiny interest could be perceived by both parties while the kids came running to him, excited that new bots wanted to come too, but Red Alert had his reservations while holding as many kids as he could on his servos and shoulders to go look for their parents, not knowing that it only made things worse because since when humans let you pick them up like that? (Kids aboard were familiar with being picked up to prevent accidents).
"They let him touch them"
"So little"
"And that, my pal, it's fragging cute"
The secret, no so secret, was now in the open, and more than 45 new mechs joined the Lost Light for the first time since it's second launching.

Part five🖤
"It's good to see you Tank." Dempsey said looking at his older self putting a hand on the glass. Everyone was silent just the quiet beeping of the capsule was heard. "Will... will he feel it?" Tank asked. "No he's in a deep cryo sleep he won't know what happens to him." Richtofen answered. "Good." with that Tank turned off the energy of the capsule and Richtofen collected the soul with the summoning key. "Are you okay Tank?" I asked looking at him. "I need a moment." he said and walked away to one of the castle walls. "You should join him. He doesn't say it but I know he needs you right now." I nodded and made my way up the stairs standing next to him. I didn't know what to say so I just stood there looking at him. He looked beaten and sad I really wanted to comfort him." Tank if you need something please let me know. " I said and suddenly I felt his arms around my body. "I'm so sorry Y/N. I was an asshole I know that I shouldn't have talked to you like that I was just angry. Can you please forgive me? You're still my dollface right?" I gave him a warm smile. "Of course, I'm the only good choice for this job." "You're the only woman I want for this job." he said and before I could respond his lips were on mine. I was in shock for a second before I kissed him back. When we broke the kiss he looked at me with a wide smile "You asked if I needed something. What if I need some time with you alone, somewhere private?" "Then I'd say lead the way marine." "Oohraaa!" he said dragging me through the hallways until we found ourselves in a room with a large bed.

More Rowan worldbuilding please!!!
Thank you for both asks, here is an extra-long bit of lore!
Rowan’s cybernetics / cryo
For this dealer’s choice ask, I’m going to talk about Rowan’s cybernetics.
CW: body horror, human experimentation
When we meet Rowan at the start of the story, he has multiple unpleasant surprises waiting for him. One, he’s about to find he was in cryo stasis for 200-odd years. And two, he has cybernetic implants he decidedly does not remember having pre-stasis (a bionic arm, and an eye scanner that’s basically google glass, but permanent).
Now, the stasis part may have been unexpected (especially the length of it), but parts of the journey leading up to it Rowan can remember. He and his parents had reservations in an orbital habitat (courtesy of Jack, who could afford it; even though he didn’t believe the apocalypse would happen; but he figured that several millions in fees was a small price to pay for his boyfriend’s peace of mind). He remembers evacuation: from his home in a purpose-build Boston suburb of Havenford via vacuum train link to the pick-up point, where the “lifeboat capsule” with a few dozen people in it was whisked away by the satellite lift/winch to the orbital platform serving as a hub/terminal for arrivals.
(The drama involved in that evacuation, during which Rowan very nearly elbowed his way back out of the capsule because of refusing to evacuate until Jack got there, and only stayed on board because of his parents’ tearful pleas… is a heartbreaking story for another time. As is his wait for Jack topside.)
Nevertheless, drama notwithstanding, Rowan remembers getting to the arrival terminal, being directed to a habitat he and his parents would be sharing with a few other families, and stepping into a decontamination capsule, to purge any radiation he might have absorbed during the evacuation process. Then… nothing.
So let’s talk about the ARK Corporation for a moment. They are directly inspired by Fallout’s Vault Tec, a corporation that was famous for building underground vaults to help humanity survive the apocalypse, but then using the populations of most of said vaults to run various experiments: some social, some biological, some a combination of both, all extremely unethical and non-consensual. Much like the protagonist of Fallout 4, Rowan ends up in stasis because his habitat was earmarked as one of the experimental ones, and the inhabitants would be unknowing guinea pigs in studying the effects of long-term stasis on the body.
But what does that have to do with the cybernetics, I hear you cry. Well. The destruction down on Earth turned out to be a lot more profound than ARK Corp, or at least parts of it, had expected - not to mention, rather ahead of schedule. The Orbital Sanctuary project, which was supposed to contain thousands of habitats and a complex infrastructure, was never finished. Over time, communication between parts of the corporation degraded, as did communication between individual habitats and their access to what infrastructure there was. So, fifty or so years after the initial evacuation, Rowan’s habitat was basically an abandoned spaceship in orbit, populated by a few dozen scientists, some of their children born on board, and similar numbers of subjects in stasis. With resources dwindling, the crew knew they couldn’t continue indefinitely, but even if they could locate other habitats in orbit to scavenge or move to, they had no way of safely traveling through space. (The habitat had been stocked with some space-worthy suits for external repairs, but they were not enough, and not rated for prolonged space walks.)
With no resources to build vehicles for space travel to another habitat, or enough suits that could withstand prolonged space exposure combined with the crew’s best attempts at a jetpack, the scientists began looking into making themselves more sturdy. The technology they did have on board was in the area of human-compatible cybernetics. And even though a lot of said tech was still in its infancy and not ready for field use, the habitat did have a sizeable store of human bodies on which compatibility experiments could be run…
It took several decades to achieve the results they wanted, but once they were done, the remaining scientists, their bodies upgraded in every way they could to improve their chances, got together the transportable supplies they could carry, and set off towards the closest habitat they had been able to track in the orbit. (Their mode of transportation can be best described as a jet-propelled buoy: something to hold on to as it moved through space.)
Unwilling to completely cannibalize the habitat in case they had to return, they left life support running on minimal, which was enough to keep the cryo stasis active for the few people who survived the experiments. Among them, a young man by the name of Rowan Woods, who, owing to his age, good health and a fair bit of luck, proved a very successful recipient of not one, but two cybernetic enhancements: a prosthetic arm with a full range of motion, and an ocular implant that improved his brain’s communication with the prosthesis as well as, when activated, had the ability to connect to available information networks and output data in a HUD.

I hiss at them. They hold out Kiris hand.
?: Colonel check it out Four fingers. We got a Half breed.
He looks at Kiri then Walks to Lo’ak. I can get a look at him. He is Spider’s Dad, but in a Avatar body.
Q: Show me your fingers.
Lo’ak raises his middle fingers.
Q: You’re his aren’t you ?
Lo’ak hisses at him.
Q: You're his, alright.
He pulls Lo’ak up on his Queue.
Q: Where is he ?
L: Sorry I don’t speak your Language with assholes.
Q: Where is your Father ?
Lo’ak hisses again but it comes out crooked because of the Pain.
Q: Really you wanna play it this way ?
He pulls out a knife. I hold my breath and look between them. He let’s him go and walks to Kiri.
L: Kiri No !
J: No ! Leave her alone !
S: Hey ! No, don't touch her !
He turns to us and looks at us.
Q: What’s your Name Kid ?
S: Spider. Socorro.
He shows the man that is holding him to let him go and Kneels in front of him.
Q: Miles ?
S: Nobody calls me that.
Q: Well I’ll be Damned. I figured they’d send you back to Earth.
J: They can’t put Baby’s in Cryo capsules.
He looks at me.
Q: And who are you ?
J: Jane Carter.
He nods and gets up. The soldier that was holding Spider Before goes back to holding him.
?: What are we Doing Boss ?
He presses the buttons on his communicator.
Q: Iron sky blue one, actual.
We look at him.
Q: We’re standing by for Extract, over.
They start to drag us with them.
Q: Be advised, We’re bringing in High Value Prisoners.
We all start to struggle more.
K: Let us Go !
?: Shut up !
At the shack we stop. They’re making us sit on the floor. Well they shove us down. I sit back to back with spider. They handcuff us.
J: Are you Ok?
I feel him nodding.
S: Are you ?
J: Yeah.
I sigh.
J: The one time I decide to go out not in my True Body and we get captured.
I lay my Head on his shoulder.  I look to the Sky when the Eclipse starts. Rain clouds are forming. They get us to stand up. And soon enough it starts Raining. I’m being held by a Woman same as Tuk. She takes my Hand.
J: Just great.
T: Jane I’m scared.
J: Don’t be. It's going to be Ok.
?: Shut up.
She lightly pulls my Hair.
I hiss quietly and try to turn my head to look for Spider but she yanks my Head back in front.
Q: Heads up. Three minutes.
I try and listen in the Woods for some kind of sign that the others are coming.
Q: Watch our Six.
I head spider and Kiri grunting. And suddenly we hear it. Netiri calling out to us. Tuk turns her head. I giver her hand a Squeeze and look at Lo’ak. He lightly nods and looks at Spider. I can Kiri start to pray. Then everything goes fast. I hear a thumping sound and the Avatar start to fire at the Bushes.
N: Lo’ak.
He pulls a gas grenade and breaks free.
Tuk bites the Woman and we both start to run. I go with Spider and Kiri. I’m faster then they are. After a while I hear an explosion and Spider screaming.
K: Spider !
J: No !
I stop running. Kiri holds my Arm.
Ne: Kiri Jane.
J: No Spider !
She tries to pull me along but I break free and jump to a Tree.
K: Jane ! No !
I take a deep breath and jump down the Tree towards the Avatar. One I stab with my Dagger. I try to attack another one until I get grabbed and held in pace. I hiss and Try to break free but it doesn’t work. I feel a hit against my Head and the World turns Black.

RED VALLEY SEASON 1 EPISODE 3 "The Picnic"
[transcript]
SCENE 1
GORDON'S CAR. RAIN SOFTLY FALLS ON THE WINDOWS, ON THE ROOF. FROM THE STEREO, A RECORDING PLAYS. THE SOUND IS DISTANT AND NOT EASY TO DISCERN AT FIRST. THIS IS A RECORDING FROM A ROOM. FOOTSTEPS CLICK ACROSS A METALLIC FLOOR. MACHINES BEEP AND VENTILATORS HISS. INTERMITTENT CONVERSATION, ONLY SHORT BURTS AND SHORTER ANSWERS.
WARREN: This isn't a log recording, what is this?
GORDON: This is the audio from the video feed inside the cryo suite at Red Valley. I have the video too, but like I said, I'm trying to break you in gently. This is where it all happens. So, let's set the scene. You've got your six candidates for the Teddy Bears Picnic. 6 guys full of synthetic blood about to be put in induced comas and cryonically frozen. Yogi is dead after having a massive reaction to the infusion they're giving him just days before. That leaves five. Just like you heard Wood say, the picnic was due to start the coming Monday. And it did. The other five, uh, Brown, Black, Grizzly, Polar and Pooh, they all go into the, uh, capsules, the...cryo pods. They're hooked up to every bit of monitoring going, like a super intensive care unit, they're fully anaesthetised, tubes in their mouths, in their arms, in their cocks, the lot.WARREN: Wait, wait, wait.
GORDON: What?
WARREN: Aren't I supposed to be listening to the tape, aren't I missing what's happening?
GORDON: Uh, no. No, not yet, nothing's happening yet. I'm setting the scene. So, tubes in their cocks-
WARREN: So, why have this on the tape at all?
GORDON: What are you talking about?
WARREN: Well you could set the scene just by talking. And then play me the tape.
GORDON: No but this is the atmosphere. I'm trying to show you tha-
WARREN: So, you're literally playing this as, like, a backing track, while you make this speech, setting yourscene.
GORDON: Well that makes it sound cynical.
WARREN: No, it's just...
GORDON: What?
A LOUD AND ABRUPT CUT OF ONE RECORDING TO ANOTHER.
AUBREY WOOD: We're really doing this…
WARREN: Whoa whoa, what's this?
AUBREY WOOD: It's 06.00am and I haven't slept. Not for a minute.
GORDON: Oh, for fuck's sake.
GORDON TURNS THE STEREO OFF.
GORDON: This is Wood's log. I was intending to have you all brought up to speed, but I didn't think you were going to ask so many fucking questions and now my timing's off.
WARREN: This is more than one recording?
GORDON: Yeah. I've got the audio from the cryo suite and I've got Wood's logs and I've cut them together.
WARREN: Why would you do that?
GORDON: To make it more dramatic.
A PAUSE. THE RAIN CONTINUES.
GORDON: To draw you in, get you to invest. Like a sizzle reel. Why are you looking at me like that?
WARREN: Nothing. It's just...not what I was expecting.
GORDON: No shit, Warren. Look, now I've lost my place.
GORDON REWINDS THE TAPE. PLAYS A BURST. GOES BACK A BIT MORE. THE CRYO SUITE AGAIN. IT PLAYS FOR A FEW SECONDS WHILE GORDON MUTTERS PIECES OF HIS EARLIER SPEECH BACK TO HIMSELF SOFTLY.
GORDON: Tubes in cocks. Tubes everywhere. All the monitoring is going, they've been studying them the whole time, recording all the data. The course lasts two weeks.
WARREN: Two weeks? Those bears have been frozen for two weeks?
GORDON: This isn't the first time they've done this. The company, I mean. They've been building up slowly. A day, a long weekend. All our teddy bears are first timers of course, and Wood too, she's new. We rejoin the story at the end of the course. We're down to 3 teddy bears.
WARREN: What happened to the others?
GORDON: Well Brown and Polar didn't make it more than a day. One of them didn't survive the rapid cooling process before the big freeze, the other one held out for a few hours after, then their heart just gave up. I forget which was which… Here we go.
PAUSE. THE TAPE KEEPS PLAYING.
GORDON: Now here we go.
ANOTHER CLUMSY TAPE-TO-TAPE CUT.
WOOD: We're really doing this. It's 06.00am and I haven't slept. Not for a minute. I was sick earlier. I don't know if I'm excited or the most terrified I've ever been in my life. Dr Halbech oversaw the Hartshorn infusions at midnight, the 8 hour activation period is nearly up. She sent Dr Thomas and me to bed, for whatever use that could be. How are we supposed to sleep when all we can think about is waking someone up?
CUT BACK TO THE CRYO SUITE, THERE IS LOW-LEVEL CONVERSATION, UNINTELLIGIBLE.
WARREN: I can't hear what's going on.
GORDON: You will.
WARREN: What did she say? What's Hartshorn?
GORDON: I had to google it myself. It was a type of smelling salt or something. For people who fainted in ye olde times. It has literally nothing to do with what's in that infusion, I think they just liked the sound of It
FROM THE TAPE, AN ALARM SUDDENLY RINGS LOUDLY. THERE IS A HUBBUB OF RAISED VOICES. THE VOICES GROW LOUDER AS THEY COME CLOSER TO THE RECORDING DEVICE.
DR THOMAS: The Hartshorn has failed.
DR HALBECH: We don't know that.
WOOD: Monitoring is going off. Art line, sats...ECG is flat...
DR THOMAS: If it’s flat, just check the lead, it's probably loose.
WOOD: It's not the bloody lead, there's no trace on any of it.
DR HALBECH: Right, open it up.
WOOD: You want to open it up now?
DR HALBECH: If we don't know if his heart's beating there's no point pissing about is there.
CUT.
WOOD: I thought she was right...all I could think is that I had to get him out to find out if he was alive, because I didn't have anything else to go off...I realised we were entirely in the dark…
CUT.
MULTIPLE ALARMS RINGING IN THE CRYO SUITE.
DR THOMAS: Okay. Seal's released.
WOOD: Open it.
PAUSE.
DR THOMAS: Oh, I can't lift it.
DR HALBECH: For god's sake.
A PAUSE, THEN A LOUD CRACK, THEN A RUSH OF FLUID HITTING THE METAL FLOOR, LIKE A BATH CRACKED IN TWO.
WOOD: Jesus-
DR THOMAS: Oh, fuck me!
WOOD: Jesus Christ, Jesus fucking Christ-
DR THOMAS: It's on my feet, it's in my fucking shoes-
DR HALBECH: Right. Clean it up. We reconvene in 2 hours.
FOOTSTEPS SPLASH INTO THE DISTANCE.
CUT.
WOOD: There was no readings because there was nothing to read...It was like jam...no, no, like jelly that hasn't set because you've put the wrong fruit in it...It's Grizzly up next.
SHE LAUGHS INVOLUNTARILY.
WOOD: And then we break for lunch.
CUT.
INSTANT ALARM BELLS AGAIN. THE SOUND OF THRASHING IN WATER.
DR THOMAS: Christ, watch yourself-
WOOD: I know what I'm doing. I need you to keep him still.
DR THOMAS: How the hell is he even conscious enough to do this-
WOOD: We pulled him out too soon.
DR HALBECH: He is awakening exactly as we planned.
WOOD: Yep, this is just what I had planned-
DR HALBECH: Doctor Wood-
WOOD: Ben lift his arm, I think it's trapped-
DR THOMAS: Sure-
WOOD: Bryony could you mute those alarms please.
DR THOMAS: It's stuck… it’s like he's sitting on it.
THE ALARMS SUDDENLY GO SILENT.
WOOD: Thank you. Ben, his arm, he's straining-
DR THOMAS: Got it.
A SICKENING CRACK.
WOOD: What the fuck did you do?
DR THOMAS: It's...It's...
A SQUEAK AS THE ARM LEAVES HIS GRIP, AND A SHATTER LIKE GLASS ON THE FLOOR.
CUT.
WOOD: His arm just came off. In Ben’s hand. The shock killed Grizzly in less than a minute. We're done, it's all over. I told Halbech to go fuck herself and I'm locked in my bathroom with half a packed bag and my coat on like I'm a bloody teenager. There isn't anywhere to go. Next delivery is three days. No way out on foot. I'll work something out with Ben. Anything is better than-
IN THE DISTANCE ALARM BELLS RING.
WOOD: No no no-
CUT.
THE CRYO SUITE.
WOOD: Ben. What are you doing?
DR THOMAS: Halbech had already put the Hartshorn in and muted the notifications. We have to do it.
WOOD: Where's she gone?
DR THOMAS: She left.
WOOD: She what?
DR THOMAS: She's gone. It's just us and Winnie the fucking Pooh. Are you going to help me or not?
THE CRACKLE OF A WALKIE TALKIE.
WOOD: Halbech? Dr Halbech? Bryony, answer your fucking comm!
DR THOMAS: She's gone, you're in charge of this fucker's airway. Come on.
CUT.
MINUTES LATER. MORE THRASHING IN THE WATER.
WOOD: Okay. Pass me the scope. Alright.
WOOD: Ben! He's fucking dying on me! Ben! Where the fuck are you going? BEN! Ben, please don't leave me with him. Ben! Be-
THE TAPE IS EJECTED FROM THE PLAYER. THERE IS A LONG MOMENT OF SILENCE, PUNCTUATED ONLY BY THE RAIN ON THE WINDSCREEN.
GORDON: It kind of winds down from there.
WARREN GETS OUT OF HIS SEAT AND LEAVES THE CAR, SLAMMING THE DOOR BEHIND HIM.
SCENE 2
WARREN WALKS AWAY IN THE RAIN. AFTER A MOMENT GORDON GETS OUT OF THE CAR TO FOLLOW HIM.
GORDON: Hey. Hey!
WARREN: I don't want to hear any more of this, okay? If this is just some sick joke you people play on the new guy then fuck you, alright? If it’s real, then fuck you, why would you show that to me? Why come to someone in Accounts with this?
GORDON: It isn't a joke. And you came to me.
WARREN: To do an audit on old account, not to listen to...no one should hear that. Why are you smiling?
GORDON: I don't know, I smile when things get awkward.
WARREN: Gordon, why are you sharing this stuff with me? Who is your line manager, who should actually be dealing with this? Jesus, the fucking police should be dealing with this!
GORDON: What planet are you on, man? This is Twilight Zone level stuff, they're clearly not worried about breaking a few eggs while they make their creepy dystopian murder omelettes. They're not going to think twice about getting rid of someone like me. I have been following this as closely as I can for years, alright? I have been waiting to be able to share it with someone so we can...expose it, so we can end it. They must be working on something right now and someone's dropped the ball bad enough that Accounts have picked up the trail. And they've sent you.
WARREN: I'm not the man for this, alright, this is too big, I'm not Clive Schill...
GORDON: Clive Schill? The golden boy?
WARREN: Yeah, you want a result, go to him-
GORDON: I don't trust Clive fucking Schill! How many men below the age of 40 are called Clive?
WARREN: I'm not your guy-
GORDON: Warren, a guy like me asks a guy like you to meet him in a car park in the dark, there's got to be a chance I was going to stab you or at least ask you to toss me off or something-
WARREN: What?
GORDON: But you came anyway, didn't you? Because you're good at this, I can tell. You care. I'm taking a huge gamble trusting you.
WARREN: I suck at my job, alright?
GORDON: What?
WARREN: I didn't even know what this job was, okay? My wife got it for me.
GORDON: Oh. Right.
WARREN: Look, I've been out of work for a while, okay. I...wasn't well. I... I wasn't well. My wife had to look after me and she's old friends with Doug Holder. They got me this job so I could start fresh, okay? I can't get involved in something like this.
GORDON: So why did you even seek me out in the first place? Why are you here now?
WARREN: I don't know.
GORDON: Because you care. So, my sizzle reel was too much, I'm sorry, that's probably my issue, I care very much about presentation, I'm sorry. But I could see it in your eyes, this stuff speaks to you. You give a shit.
WARREN: A long time ago, maybe...Not now.
GORDON: A long time ago? You're not Gandalf the fucking Grey. Look, so I don't know you, and you don't know me. Fine. I'm the one with everything to lose here. You've got the power. To make something happen. Look… will you just take these-
GORDON OPENS A CAR DOOR AND GRABS A BAG.
WARREN: I don't want to know what's in that bag, Gordon-
GORDON: Take the fucking bag! There's more in there that I need you to hear. Just - sleep on it, okay? Just, think about it for a little while. People are losing their lives in this company.
WARREN: Fine. Just don't call me, alright?
GORDON: Alright. I leave it to you.
WARREN: I'm going home.
CUT.
SCENE 3
WARREN'S VOICEMAIL.
VOICEMAIL: (D) New message received today at 18.38 hours.
KAREN: (D) Hey babe. Just wondering when you'll be done. Nothing in the fridge so I think it'll be a kids meal spectacular, fish fingers, chips and beans. Everything orange.
VOICEMAIL: (D) New message received today at 19.24 hours.
KAREN: (D) Hey, it's me. You didn't say you'd be late tonight, can you call me when you get this. I've text you twice already. Bye.
VOICEMAIL: (D) New message received today at 20.41 hours.
KAREN: (D) Babe, where the fuck are you? You know I worry. You must have like 10 missed calls from me. We don't do this, alright?
CUT.
WARREN IS DRIVING.
WARREN: Just a standard double please.
VOICE: That's £69 or we’ve got a twin for £49.
WARREN: Oh, the twin will be fine actually.
VOICE: Okay, so if I could just take your name, please?
WARREN: Yeah, it's Warren Godby.
VOICE: Warren Godby?
WARREN: Yeah?
VOICE: Wow, shit… it's Laura. Laura Hambling. Well, Laura Jones now but Hambling at school. We were at St Luke's together.
WARREN: Oh, yeah. Of course. Laura. Hi.
VOICE: Hi!
WARREN: ...How are you?
VOICE: I'm fine. Do you remember you throw up at Ian Howard's mum's house, in his mum's bed?
WARREN: Oh...yeah. Right.
VOICE: You offered to get off with me if I didn't tell Ian.
WARREN: Hmm.
VOICE: Which was a pretty strange deal to make.
WARREN: I agree.
VOICE: I didn't get off with you.
WARREN: No… So do you want the long number across the middle of my card, or…
CUT.
GORDON'S FLAT. A KNOCK AT THE DOOR. FOOTSTEPS DOWN THE HALL. GORDON UNLOCKS THE DOOR.
CLIVE: Evening Gordon.
GORDON: Clive Schill?
CLIVE: Gordon, I think it's time you and I had a talk about Warren Godby. And you can turn off the tape recorder for this one.

he has to admit that some part of him didn't believe that they would find anything in vault 100. not that he didn't have any faith in the information passed on by the brotherhood, they've been known to be fairly reliable people despite how odd the items or targets are that they were after. some of the great war stuff, sometimes even pre-war, was often just average household items and still the brotherhood had wanted their hands on it. something about protecting mankind from itself, from its own technology. he's sure its there at the back of his mind somewhere, conditioned to remember it since the time he was a boy. but in any case … this was different. this was a person. one in which who was rumored to have seen the great war and participated, to have witnessed the bombs as they dropped over the former states. any more most people who could claim to have been alive during those days were ghouls or had long since become mutants, shells of their former self; the ghouls drugged out of their minds and deformed from the same radiation scorching the earth. yet they had reason to believe that this case was different. he was different. vault 100 had cryo chambers, or rather ... a chamber.
a recovered pip-boy is, as bo suspects, the only reason they were given this task. open the vault, bring back the man inside. he is valuable and has to be protected, they said. he remembers the distinct chirps of the pip-boy when it was activated, the loud tumbles of the doors to the vault falling open after many years. there was caution in every step forward, nobody knew what to expect down here. sometimes there were more than some could bargain for. but there was nothing save the hum of old electricity lighting their path forward, the smooth whirring of joints on the knight's suits as they moved with lights pointed. the elevator ride to floor 12 was bumpy, bo almost sure that one slight move and the cable would detach and they would all plummet to their deaths. until they find him ... there in a chamber exactly as they said he would be, completely unchanged. there were no monsters, no radiation effects. just him. someone else spoke first, something relating to getting him out of there so they could be on their way but bo shook his head and said, " this has to be done right. "
gently, bo touches over the controls that flicker to life. his vitals are normal and good for someone thats remained untouched for over a century, and he starts the waking process. carefully opening the capsule when it was safe to do so. and he stands back, giving him room to breathe when @warspun begins to come to. then, " welcome back, captain. "

"What do you think, Captain Wilson?" The agent asks as the two men stare at Gwen through the two way mirror built into the wall of her hospital room. On her side, it just looks like a white board that's filled out with her basic information - name, room number, nurse's name, and vitals. On this side, it's an observation point. Though it is a hospital in the strictest sense, it's actually a very secure government facility. She'd been brought here when they found the cryo capsule. Had brought her out of the freeze and housed her in secret from the moment she uttered the name Arnim Zola.
Sam had been brought in because of his current standing as Captain America and her following up with familiarity of Steve Rogers. All the names she'd thrown out had been cross checked and her identity confirmed, but it did not mean they trusted her. Words like Nazi, Hydra, and Sleeper Agent were being thrown out there and he found it to be utterly ridiculous.
"I think," He says finally, "We need to call in Bucky, like I said a week ago when you asked me the first time. I think he'll be able to provide some insight and confirm what we already know. That this is Gwen Adler, their childhood friend, whose father assisted in financially supporting Arnim Zola's research into the benefits of Cryostasis. She doesn't know anything. She isn't a threat. Was just in the wrong place at the wrong time."
And she remained in that state for so long because her parents died in an accident.
"You understand why we didn't." The tone, laced with a desire for approval, is what causes Sam to turn and fully look at the agent. He's young for his role, and for the task he's been given, but that's what S.H.I.E.L.D. has become. "We did not want to risk reinstating the Winter Soldier by exposing him to an unknown variable."
So that's what they thought, Sam thinks, that she's a key to trigger Hydra's greatest asset. To set him back in motion despite all the work Wakanda did to free his mind. It was a real possibility and fear, even he could admit that. It had almost cost Steve his life to put Bucky down the first time. What would it now that they didn't have him to break the threshold were it to reactivate? There was a moment, with this thought fresh in his mind, and the scenario playing out, that Sam almost agreed. Almost. "Don't mistake what I'm saying to you now, Agent Renfield, I've reached the end of my courtesy. Either you call him, bring him in, or I will."
Bucky ignores the calls as they come in - one after another. He even ignores Sam's first call, though it's not that he's dodging it, he's just busy exiting a lawyers office where he's finishing signing paperwork on the property he just purchased. It's that second, more insistent feeling call, that he finally answers. But as the call connects, and he's barely able to get out some short-fused one liner, Sam's voice is cutting through.
"About time you answered your damn phone. It's important."
"Considering everything with you is listed as important, with an exclamation point, forgive me if I disagree."
"No, Buck, this is actually important. We're sending a car to pick you up. It should be there in two minutes."
"Yeah, here's the thing, even I know you don't get in the car with strangers, Sam."
"Bucky, get in the damn car."
Sam hangs up on him, which is a first, and the start of what puts Bucky on edge. The second is getting into the car that pulls up to the curb exactly two minutes as promised. He slides in to the back seat next to Joaquin Torres, who is essentially Sam's side kick and consistently dressed in army fatigues.
"Do you wear anything else?" Bucky asks, simply to fill the silence.
"Do you?" It's shot back, after taking in Bucky's own layered black clothing. It's fair, Bucky decides, and settles back. He's not in the habit of asking questions that he won't get answers to. It only builds a level of frustration in him that will likely lead to a fight, and thinking that's where they are already headed, it's better if he conserves his energy.
It only takes an hour for him to track the route mentally, and knows they are headed to DC. It's where most government faculties are housed, so it is logical. But once he gets out of the car and stares up at the hospital, he's no longer sure where this is going. "Sergeant Barnes, this way." Torres calls to him, face still buried in the tablet in his hands. He walks with a surety that only a young man who had never seen real combat could - he was wrong, Bucky, but war was just different now.
Sam catches him in the hallway, outside of two adjoining rooms, and his brows are tented with concern. He starts to fill Bucky in on the basics - they found someone who'd been kept in a cryo state for the better part of eighty years. It was a woman, and when she came to, she immediately asked for Arnim Zola. Then he hesitates and adds, "We think you knew her."
"You think she's a Hydra agent?" Bucky asks, following the logical thinking shared between the agents that found her. But this isn't a prison, and the time line doesn't match up.
"No, we think you knew her before." Sam motions for him to follow, and they step into the observation room.
All logical functions that make up the being that is James Barnes cease on sight. It takes his body exactly five minutes and forty-five seconds to realize he's not breathing, and stumbles. Because he does know her. She's slightly older now, features more refined and womanly, evident from an early tested cryostasis chamber that wasn't fully sealed, but it's her.
He's suffering temporary tinnitus, and he feels Sam grab him. Can see his lips moving, but fails to register the words. Bucky realizes as the tightness spreads across his chest that he's having a panic attack, but his limbs are numb. Sam is taking all of this in and watching the agents surrounding them reaching for their guns thinking something has triggered him. But it's not the Winter Soldier reemerging to attack, it's James Barnes at his purest in 1943, ready to go to war. And Sam is torn between telling them to stand down and holding all of Bucky's weight as his lack of oxygen finally causes him to black out and he sinks to the floor like a stone.
"Get out of my face, Sam." Bucky says, once revived by smelling salts a few minutes later. The comment is both habitual and driven by embarrassment of his lack of control, but it's just the two of them and a nurse in the room now, and even she gets up and scurries out. He has no idea how close to death he'd just come, again. He's aware, as he sits up, that there's an ache in the back of his head where he must have hit it going down. He'll blame that for the moment of vulnerability that follows. "Is this real?"
"It's real." Sam confirms. "At least from what we can gather. She hasn't really given us anything to doubt her, but that's what we need you for." He stands first, and offers Bucky a hand to help him to his feet. Though he hovers to make sure the old man is steady. "I wanted to bring you in from the jump, but there were reservations..."
"That's smart."
Sam shakes his head, taking for granted that Bucky is a tactician. It's mistaken for a lack of faith in himself over him being realistic about the threat he poses. "We don't think she knows you're even alive, let alone that you were the Winter Soldier. It's going to be a shock."
"Let's keep it that way." Bucky says, and pulls his gloves from his pockets. He puts them on, covering both flesh and vibranium. Then, he follows Sam into the room, and watches that shock play out. He watches as the fear takes over and she has no idea how used to it and unphased he is by it. Something that shocks all three of them as Sam expects Bucky to move towards her and comfort her. But instead, he's guarded, and does not reach for her because he does not want her to know his shame.
"Give us some space." He tells Sam, over his shoulder, with a pointed look as he finally starts inching forward. He stops at the foot of the bed, still out of reach, and winces at the fact she is cuffed, but also relieved by the restraint. He waits until the door shuts behind him to speak again, trusting Sam to keep the observation room clear as well so that this conversation is candid and between them. He is forcing them to trust the very judgement they were afraid of in the first place.
"Listen to me," Bucky says, his voice pitched low. He is different now too, not driven by the emotions screaming to be freed. This is not the boy she knew, this is a man who has played the game too long to trust this momentary peace. "I don't know how much time we are going to have, and I know this is a shock, and i know you've got a lot of questions, but I need you to calm down. Gwen, I need you to tell me what happened to you so I can help you. The rest can come after."

It was the beeping that first began to pull the woman from her slumber. An obsessant and highly annoying sound that practically burst her eardrums and was at the brink of driving her mad. But it's the cold that hits next. A cold that was driven deep in her bones despite what felt like a woven blanket covering her body. From what she could tell she was in a thin type of dress and there were socks on her feet and that did nothing to help with the chill that hurts. She hurts.
More sensations come before her eyes finally open. Her joints scream at her yet her body is limp. Her mouth is dry and she's thirsty, but that's not as prevalent when she feels the pull of something in her arm, or the sticky squares and wires that are hooked to her chest, there's something cool on both wrists as well. But its the cold that she can't shake and finally what drives her to open her eyes with a sharp gasp. Immediately she regrets it, eyes squinting at the lights that so bright she may have well been staring at the sun. But slowly she adjusts and that is when the panic sets in.
It didn't matter how hard she pleaded or how loud she screamed for help- or for her father. She gave the names of everyone who could save her. George and Lynn Adler. Harry Madison. Arnim Zola. June and Rebecca Barnes. Some other senators names were thrown around as well- hell she even used Steve's name. But that mattered just as much as the way her wrists were black and blue from thrashing against the handcuffs- it didn't. What it seemed to do however was replace the so called "doctors" and "nurses" coming into the room to men and women in suits with briefcases. They demanded questions she didn't have answers to- questions that didn't make even the slightest bit of sense. Something about the Soviet Union. Something about a Winter Soldier. Something about HYDRA and all she could do was beg for her help, beg to let her out, and beg for more blankets
It was that evening and three sedatives later that Gwen finally met a man named Captain Wilson- he told her to call him Sam. His eyes were questioning, but they were one of the very few that were gentle. He was kind, even made a small joke. She didn't understand it, but had a friendly smile. It was his turn to ask about Arnim Zola...and he was the first to hear a response that wasn't in between pleading hysterics. "I did not know him...my father does. He had...he had information that he was willing to give to the United States in a deal for his pardon from working with the Nazis. That's...that's all I understood about their arrangement. There was this chamber that could preserve human life o-or something like that, I couldn't make sense of the specifics of it all....and to be frank it sounded absurd....b-but I'd seen crazier things happen to my friend Steve Rogers." She stops at the name, feeling her chest fill up with the grief she had been so desperate to escape. A single tears slips down her cheek, but as it been all day, there was nothing she could do to stop them. "My father....he-he was a general in the first war and he's starting his run for the White House to try and...and prevent another war like this from happening and he thinks that this program would be ...would be magnificent and since the world lost Ste- Captain Rogers....he wants to build off of his legacy. They just needed a volunteer and my father knew how important this could be for him, for me, so-so I said yes...a-and I fell asleep." More tears well up in her eyes as she looks at Captain Wilson, fingers fiddling with the metal bars on her bed. "Captain...I..I would really like to see my father now." There's a sorrow that flashes in his eyes that frightens her to her core, despite his assurance that they would work on it. But all she can manage is a small nod before finally asking about one of the things she'd been wondering all day. "......Is the war over?"
Days pass and there's still no sign of her family, fiancé, or Dr. Zola. Her days are filled with questions she doesn't have answers for, pokes from sharp needles, begging for more blankets, and dreadful pit in her stomach filled with fear and loneliness. Her own questions go unanswered. And as the days drag on and her observations of the room get stronger and stronger...and on the fourth day Gwen finally can look Sam in the eyes and ask. "How long have I been asleep?"
A while.
She's been told it's been a week since she woke up. One of the cuffs remain but the stickers on her chest come off completely. Doctors come in and ask her how she's feeling. She says she's cold and wants her father. Agents come in and ask the same goddamn questions and she tells them the same goddamn answers and that she wants her fiancé. Sam comes and asks her how she's "holding up" (which apparently means how is she doing) she says she's scared and wants to go home. But there's no more tears to cry. Half of them were disposed at Bucky's funeral, another large portion at Steve's, and she was surprised the first few day in this room weren't flooded with her tears.
The morning of the eighth day the door is opened and she's surprised to see Sam standing in the doorway. "You're early," Gwen manages to squeak out as she plays with the rim of her mug filled with tea. "I was actually wondering if you had-" She stops as a new set of feet step into the room and in walks a tall man with dark hair. He's dressed in black, but it's not an agent. His eyes were wide and his expression was filled with shock. And it's so familiar...until it's too familiar.
Fear is the first thing that comes to her features, the mug falling to the floor and shatters instantly. Olive skin is pale as she stares at the ghost in the room for just a few more millisecond before her body reacts, pushing herself to the other side of the bed in a flailing display of fear. "No! No!"
Her tears are suddenly back as she gasps for air, eyes frantically looking around the room, but it's the look on Sam's face that stops her and she can finally look at the ghost again. ".....James?"
In an instant she's now reaching for him, pulling as hard as she could against the handcuff as her free hand grasps for him. "Bucky?! Bucky?!"

Loop
Engineer angst? Oh yeah, baby!
Engineer x GN!Reader, TW: natural death Words: 377
Marcus lays on his bed, quietly mulling over what he assumes will be his final thoughts. It’s been years since he’s seen any of his crew, with the exception of his captain. He holds their hand as his breathing slows, closing his eyes, drifting off to sleep. He thinks back to designing his ship, his days in the academy, the nights he spent drinking coffee all night to finish his designs, all those sudden spurts of inspiration and messy blueprints. The days of production, overseeing everything personally, it was one of his proudest moments, getting the approval to build. He built the generator by himself, not trusting anyone else to the task. Installed it himself too… …that damned wormhole generator… The day he met the captain, the first day before going to start their journey across the galaxy. How firm their handshake was, how eager he was to be a part of their crew, to travel across the stars. All those mornings he looked forward, gazing out all the windows that Celcie insisted were unnecessary, excessive. Space was so beautiful… Was… And now he lays here, old and frail, praying to whatever gods will listen that the loop will end. He then thinks to all the times he died, all the times he saw the horror in his captain’s eyes. Screaming his name, watching him slip out of their grasp, over and over. He was so tired captain, but he knew how tired you were as well. All the loops, waiting until the peace would come. Death was an old friend at this point, greeting him with open arms just for the wormhole to rip him from the cold embrace. He prayed this was the last… He closes his eyes for the final time, smiling and squeezing your hand, making peace with this lifetime, knowing he’ll see you soon in the afterlife- -he pops out of his cryo capsule, meeting your eyes again. He starts speaking, like he was reading off a script before you both pause, tears welling up in his eyes. He collapses to the ground, sobbing in your arms. How many more loops? How much is too much for a couple immortals? Whatever that amount is, you both passed that a long time ago.
