I don’t think Ivan was as popular of a human pet among the Segyein as he usually gets depicted as being. 

Ivan went into Alien Stage with a popularity placement of 78th, and while we don’t have the rankings for all the contestants, this is an incredibly large gap when comparing him to someone like Till, who entered when he was in 5th. During the competition itself, Ivan gained a massive influx of fans, as seen in Top 3 when it says that he was “1st place in real-time fandom voting,” but I don’t think this means much given that there were only three people left at this point and with how large Till and Luka’s fan bases already were prior to Alien Stage. This feels more like catch-up than anything else.

When asked in an interview what his “charm” is, Ivan repeats what he’s heard from his fans, that being his snaggletooth. Others have mentioned before that besides Round 6, Ivan was the only character whose round was just a straightforward singing competition. He didn’t try to get around the rules or overwhelm his opponent; he did as he was told, just like he always has, but the problem comes with the fact that his conformity doesn’t allow him to stand out. Ivan’s fans remembering him most for something as superficial as his tooth comes off as them grasping at straws to find something unique about him. He may have made it to the semi-finals of the biggest show in the galaxy, but compared to his peers, his obedient persona that he’s cultivated to survive just seems boring.

When at Anakt, this persona worked the best because he was in a school-like environment where his teachers valued his adherence to the rules the most, not necessarily his creativity. Ivan was well-behaved and studious, which made him desirable in that kind of environment. It's basically the opposite of Till, who does badly when he's not allowed to be flexible but flourishes when given the freedom to. We get a lot of content of the cast from when they were at Anakt Garden, so it makes sense why people would assume that Ivan's popularity there translates to his popularity outside of it, but I don’t feel like that’s the case (point brought up by Castor here & here).

ALNST THOUGHT BEFORE I GO TO CLASS

isn’t it so interesting how ivan — who’s behaviors are one of the most incomprehensible to the other characters in alien stage — felt love that was most human?

he calls his emotions shallow. he acts selfishly to vie for till’s affection. he even died because he couldn’t bare seeing till die without a fight.

mizi, sua, and till were worshipping gods. but ivan was worshipping another human.

a flawed, selfish human.

Opposite Personalty but Same Alignment* Characters Played by the Same Actor: How do they feel about each other?

Duke Su, The Double vs. Zheng Zhe, Story of Kunning Palace

Feeling: Permanent mutual hatred

Duke Su: He sees Zheng Zhe for the first time and he can't believe his eyes: there is a man who looks like him (magnificent) but he's squandering it by dressing like a beggar. Then he learns that ZZ does not scheme; does not enjoy plays, banquets, or anything really; and worse, has faith that hard work will pay off in a corrupt system. But it's the fact that they look alike that keeps Duke Su up at night. He even tries to send ZZ better clothes but they are given away because "maybe it's a bribe". Disgusting.

Zheng Zhe: Learns that there is someone who looks like him, but who is detatched, vain, and ostentatious. His approach to politics reminds ZZ too much of Xie Wei. He intensely dislikes this man. He's suspicious of him. It bothers him less though as a person who always leaves a party at 9pm.

Prince Xiao Lin, Till the End of the Moon vs. Su Yishui, Love of the Divine Tree

Feeling: One-sided hatred (improved over time)

Xiao Lin: he's met a Demon Child before, he was nice about it. Princes should treat other princes with respect and decency. It's a bit weird that they look so similar but it's not a big thing.

Su Yishui: He thought he hated Su Yu the most (after himself), but here is a prince who is not only loved by his family but looks Iike him? And can use magic? And is nice??? Mu Quingge is definitely going to leave him for Xiao Lin. (Hatred/jealousy calms down a bit when he learns Xiao Lin is in love with someone else)

Zhuo Yichen, Fangs of Fortune vs. Gong Yuanzhi, My Journey to You

Feeling: Best Second Best Brothers Forever

They're both sad little orphans with brother obsessions. Zhuo Yichen has a proven ability to tolerate any personality as long as it's roughly on the side of good. Gong Yuanzhi would need some time to adjust to having two brothers that he would die for, but I'm convinced it would happen eventually. The doppelganger thing would be fine after ZYC checks to make sure GYZ isn't a shapeshifter.

Orchid, Love Between Fairy and Devil vs. Yun Weishan My Journey to You

Feeling: Enemies to sisters

This is kind of cheating because Yun Weishan starts as a villain, but Orchid is as competent at melting cold-hearted villains as Gong Ziyu. She'll be so excited for a friend (who cares that they look alike!) and YWS cannot resist a cute little sister. They are both so desperate to be loved.

Xie Wei Story of Kunning Palace vs. Chang Heng of Love Between Fairy and Devil

(I found a picture of Chang Heng looking pissed off in front of a qin so maybe these are actually the same personality and same character. Lol, no, joking)

Feeling: the fairy monarchy is corrupt and has betrayed the trust of the people, therefore it must be overthrown

Xie Wei learns that the king of fairies allowed one of his subjects to be thrown into eternal prison (Orchid) and he is pissed off, it reminds him too much of his childhood trauma. The innocent should not be sacrificed. He begins to plot against the corrupt. Chang Heng has been a loyal subject for a long time, he's the God of War, but Xie Wei makes some persuasive arguments about how Orchid saved his life and therefore he owes her eternal plotting and perhaps some murder... The look-alike thing only matters in that it allows them to confuse people and carry out complicated plans

Immortal shadow au

Fanfic prompt: Shadow is a demon while four is just a mortal hylian

It is likely that he would outlive four several times over

What if he decided to stay with four even in death and protect his grave from robbers

And considering the mess that is four swords palace and its weird unsettling atmosphere

And the fact that Legend fights several shades and other creatures

It would be a fun twist if shadow was the sole reason why the palace is so creepy

Because he had several centuries to train his abilities to kill off any and all people who dare disturb his lover’s grave

And amass the ungodly amount of corpses in the palace

The centuries of not interacting with the rest of the world and the grieving over the hero of the four sword

Is an easy way to drive yourself crazy

And considering the fact that shadow never was truly sane to begin with

Even in the manga he showed how obsessive and cruel he can be if he wants to

Imagine how much worse it would get if he has actual motivation to take his rage out on grave robbers who want to steal the four sword

He would go mad from grief and probably speak with the sword and create copies of four like the four shades

And when Legend had the “joy” to visit him and fight his way through the palace shadow was watching him from the shadows

Because even in madness he can feel the same soul that once belonged to four

When linked universe happens Legend is hesitant to be around the one who has the face of his worst nightmares

The reaction he would have if he met shadow (who looks like the shadows of the palace)

Would not be pretty

And if the chain has to enter the four swords palace and four has to endure looking at his grave

And then see an insane and grievous version of his lover

Yeah ,four isn’t having a fun time in this

Or the chain

And especially Legend

Shadow is psychologically incapable of differentiating between four and the four sword and could very easily decide that both should stay at the palace

And if four still hasn’t gotten his shadow back yet because they haven’t been to Wild's Hyrule

He would probably just prefer to stay with shadow

And when he gets forced to leave at some point

And then when he gets back his shadow

Knowing that he will one day outlive him and all shadow cares about

That would be genuinely painful

on another note. it genuinely kinda surprises me how many people interpret ivan to be the type of person to Repress and Deny his feelings when, from all the evidence we actually have, he actually seems to be quite open about it?

he does do the dumb stare and watch from afar thing that till does with mizi, yeah, but even there i don’t know if i would necessarily interpret that as ivan like. pushing his feelings away. compare the difference between how till and ivan are framed in these two shots:

in till's, we are pushed way farther back, seeing his full face and a good deal of his body as he slouches back. the colors are bright, fitting in with most of the happier mizisua angst memories, and you can read till's expression pretty clearly, even with his face beaten up. it's cute and mostly innocent, the kind of thing that makes you want to gently push him out from behind the wall to watch him stutter and get all embarrassed but reach out and play with his friends.

in ivan's... jesus. i mean, he looks like a freak (affectionate). you can't read his expression, despite the fact that we are zoomed in much more closely, only really seeing his eye as the placement of his hand covers his mouth. there is very little body language to convey the same type of sweet, childhood Yearning that till has in his staring shot. instead, for ivan, it all comes down to the Eye, how intently he stares as he watches till and mizi. it almost doesn't even feel like he wants to join in at that moment, or not yet, like watching alone is enough to feed the starvation.

don't get me wrong, there's still plenty of Yearning and Angst in that boy-- round 3 alone is enough to demonstrate that. but what i think people sometimes forget to account for is the fact that ivan acts like that specifically because he has already been rejected.

up until [whenever this moment happens in the timeline] ivan seemingly has absolutely no qualms about getting all up close and personal with till. we see this in plenty of the round 6 flashbacks:

he is plenty comfortable getting all up in till's personal space, whether it be to beat him up or just exist near him.

i also like how in this shot (below) we can see him specifically stand up and move seats, just so that he can bother till during lunch and have his little vampire weirdo moment (aww).

ivan's behavior only really shifts after till has already rejected him-- which, i'd also like to note, seems to genuinely catch ivan off guard. perhaps he genuinely didn't even consider the possibility that till would ever push him away?? i guess it's hard to know the specifics of what he was feeling or thinking in that exact moment, but at the very least this speaks to the ease with which they existed around each other previously.

thus: ivan doesn't begin with the belief that till could never love him. he only starts to doubt whether or not his feelings are requited after he has already been rejected, after he pushed too hard and too quick.

after the failed meteor shower date, his affections become a lot more subtle-- sneaking around to take care of till when he needs it, but only when his eyes are closed. the love and obsession and watchfulness is all still there, but he takes more care to hide it better now. until... well, y'know.

he lets the selfishness win. :]

meet doctor leptis ferrer, also known as fixer nine!

he collaborated with cipher thirteen on a few crucial missions, but his most important aspect is his research.

his backstory before becoming a fixer + some worldbuilding of his home planet under the cut!

he was born on niamos, that, at the time, was shifting from being a planet with its people inhabiting it to the Space Beach™ we know from andor. amidst this changing environment, little leptis was born.

niamos was divided into three main groups of people. the natives; the tourists, who were growing in number, but only stayed temporarily; and the offworlders who settled down and started to run mainly tourism-centered business. the niamos people, called avile, still ruled over the planet, having their own political organizations that excluded the newcomers. aviles allowed the offworlders to settle down in their certain parts of their lands only because that generated profit through taxes, but they weren't allowed to fully integrate in their society nor leave the permitted areas under any circumstances.

actually, the aviles allowed these settlements rather recently, after a series of revolts in the lower classes. in theory, their system was a democracy - in practice, only rich enough people could afford to become politicians, because there was no retribution for it. so, they decided to allow newcomers to settle in, with a tax, that would be used for the retribution of political positions. the more people started moving to niamos, the more new positions could get paid.

when the initial wave of new politicians from the lower classes got into the system, they started turning the system into a full, direct democracy, reform by reform. most roles were assigned by casual drawing from a list of volunteers, and no one could keep their chair longer than a year in every position. but, after the initial wave of openness and inclusion, things changed.

initially, there weren't any laws on citizenship or access to politics. it wasn't explicitly said that offworlders couldn't partake in politics, so when they began taking interest in it, with political programs that addressed their needs and problems, the natives started to fear that their flourishing tourism business would change the political balance they had reached. many feared that, in the span of a few generations, the niamos would be governed by the interests of the tourist business, that attracted visitors (and their money) from many star systems.

so, they started to legislate. to be a niamos citizen, one had to be born in a family of niamos people, quite obviously. at first, children born of mixed parents weren't allowed citizenship, and weren't even really a thing. but as the offworlders areas grew larger, and more offworlders settled on niamos, some protests arose.

then, they had to change the legislation. they were a people with a strong and deeply felt culture - they decided to use it as a base to legislate further. the niamos had many rites and trials, and a complex language, called caile. one would become citizen only by successfully passing all the trials, partaking in all the rites, and fully learning the language.

the first trial was a long pilgrimage with a wooden boat (and an animal) to an island. this allowed the child (around 6-7 y.o.) to go to school, where they could learn the language. this first trial was easy for any "full" avilec child to pass, as they traveled around the various islands of their world on a daily basis. offworlders, however, were still confined into one section of a bigger island. this allowed only children who spent enough time sailing with their avilec parent to pass the test.

then, they would be allowed into a school that would teach them how to read and write. the school, though, only taught in avilec language - so, the children already had to speak caile at home, to be able to pass the tests at the end of the year. after that, it mostly got easier - one would study the niamos history, and was asked to partake in every smaller rite that tightened the community and better integrated the new members.

around 18, though, to become a legal adult, there was another trial (here, it granted access to vote and independence. then, as one got older, they'd have to pass a trial to be able to volunteer and be elected for each position - the age grew with the importance of the role, but the difficulty of the trials only decreased). it was a relatively simple trial: it was a boat pilgrimage around every island in the archipelago - something anyone could do.

but leptis failed it.

when he was around 14 years old, he went on a boat pilgrimage with his family to reach a sacred island in front of the offworlders' sector. there, a young sea monster who had lost its way attacked him. he clenched his big jaw on his body - the monster's mouth was big enough to cover his entire torso and get a good grip anyway. as his family panicked, from the shore, some tourists saw the scene and called for help, and help arrived in the form of medics on a speeder and an offworlder with a gun, who shot the beast, who immediately lost its grip on leptis.

the offworlders' hospitals, with special legislation, were open to everyone. it was the only thing the niamos paid a tax for, as they recognized that the offworlders' medicine was better than theirs for some things. they did mostly go to their old medics, but when that failed, they relied on those hospitals as well. knowing that no niamos medic could save their son, his parents allowed him to be taken away with the speeder.

in his parents' eyes, his survival was a miracle, and they accepted it without questions. instead, little leptis began wanting to know how he was saved. so he began studying medicine. he devoted himself to the subject. even as he ruined his connection to the rest of the community (he stopped partaking to the rites - he wasn't forced to go, as both his parents were aviles, and nobody thought a niamos would stop partaking in the rites, so there weren't any rules on that) he kept on studying.

when he turned 18, he had to leave his studies to complete the trial. he was doing well, as everyone always did, until he reached the spot where he was attacked. he never went back there since the incident. suddenly, he relived all of it again, and couldn't move anymore. he was paralyzed by the flashback, and trembled heavily as he realized that there was a wound the doctors hadn't healed. unable to continue, he failed the trial.

no avile had ever failed the trial, but the law seemed clear - he couldn't have access to politics, and wouldn't become an adult. he became an outcast - his peers continued their lives while he was forced out of it, forced to depend on his parents, forever. but mostly, he started to have trouble dealing with the incident like he never had. he was distressed and tense, and couldn't sleep properly. he went back to the medics, and they told him he had ptsd - and that they couldn't do much about it. that shocked him - they saved his organs from failing and stitched his broken body back together in ways that would seem impossible to comprehend, but they couldn't do nothing to heal his hurt brain?

so that became his research interest.

one thing that excites me about ivantill round 6 is that we get to see till ACTUALLY WEARING A PROPER OUTFIT FOR ONCE. who knows. maybe they finally gave this man some shoes. perchance.
