Cassandra Cain...in plush form!

For Cassandra Cain Week 2025, I decided to make a plush of Cass in her Black Bat costume! Here, you can see she’s posed amongst rosemary flowers. Rosemary is a symbol of remembrance, and because it can grow even under harsh conditions, it also stands for strength in adversity. Both meanings are perfect for Cassie!*

I really like how her expression turned out. I think she looks very cute and tough!

If I’m being honest, Cassandra’s Black Bat costume isn’t my favorite (though I do love how she’s usually drawn with her cape as this rippling, writhing, alive thing swirling all around her)—I think her OG Batgirl costume is top-notch character design! But without the mask, it’s also a pretty plain costume, and I thought the Black Bat outfit was more visually striking for a simplified doll. (This is also why I made the inside of her cape yellow—canon!Cassie would definitely favor an all-black cape for stealth, but I think she’d agree that for a cuddly doll, a pop of color is acceptable.)

I’ll post some work-in-progress pictures of her later this week, but for now, I’m just delighted that she’s done! I used to be super into knitting character dolls (like, it was my main hobby besides writing—I was very cool in high school), but it’s been a while since I made one, and it was really fun to do something similar again. I think my favorite detail is the little bandages/wraps on her forearms. She wears them as Black Bat, but she also wears them in the YA novel Shadow of the Batgirl as part of a costume she cobbles together herself, and for that reason, I’m especially fond of them as part of her design. With them on, she's ready to take on whatever Gotham can dish up!

*Alright, full disclosure: I actually didn’t intend to comply with the prompts at all. I was taking pictures of Cass outside, noticed that the only flowering plant in my yard was rosemary, and had a violent flashback to playing Laertes in my 11th-grade production of Hamlet, in which we had our Ophelia run out into the audience and start distributing flowers to random people whilst explaining their meaning (one of which was “rosemary—that’s for remembrance”). So then I spent several minutes trying to figure out how to most effectively stuff my precious, handmade doll into a bush. On the plus side, the pictures are pretty, they fit the prompt, and now Cass smells like rosemary, so…win/win?

ive talked like 32893882 times already (and its still NOT ENOUGH) abt how upset i was abt nobara's death cos she was such a good character, with so much potential!! i really REALLY liked her. she was funny, strong, confident and kind!!!! i loved her char design!! her cursed technique and weapon were cool as hell!!!!!!

and her (recently SOMEWHAT(?) confirmed(?)) death sucked so fucking much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

she was just. fucking fridged. as much as it pains me to admit it. from a narrative standpoint, she died so yuuji would get upset and further develop his character & then move the plot along. even mahito admits that he wants her to die to make yuuji suffer. like yeah he also recognizes her a strong opponent (ofc. cos she is) but at the end of the day he wanted to kill her just to wreck yuuji. and he succeded.

nobara has no say on the way she dies. she's just.. slapped, kinda. its so sudden. its so... weird. not that she's accepting of it (we already know that she knows she can die at any moment and she's ready for it (cos she's a freak like the rest of the sorcerers lol)), but its weird bc its like its not a personal moment for her. yeah we get a flashback & her speech about how, even tho she always was a person who refused to let other people affect the way she is and decides to live, there still are people who, by being accepting of her, managed to gain a place in her heart... and she's happy for that. its rly beautiful.

but its the impact her death has on yuuji what the story really cares about here.

and like. thats fine! im not even saying killing nobara is a bad choice or that its bad if her death also developed yuuji's character. but the way it was done, its like her death only had that purpose. its a way too transparent device, that's what i dislike abt it. i dont mind being upset bc a character i love dies? i like feeling strong emotions when i engage emotionally with art/stories.

but i think she was killed off too soon. we didn't get to properly say goodbye to her. both her character arc and her death were rushed.

she could have been developed so much more! it feels like she was taken away way too soon in the story. i wanted her to fight sukuna along the others. i wanted her to use her cool technique to help yuuji nail sukuna's soul. i wanted to see just how much stronger she could get. i wanted her to finally meet saori. I WANTED HER TO HAVE A COOL EYE PATCH!!!!!!!!!!!

why is she barely mentioned after she dies??? she was one of the 3 main, dude, are u kidding me? yuuji's the only one who mentions her but he's almost afraid of talking about her. its like the whole world forgot about her!!!!! and what about maki?????? werent they girlfriends?

what is nobara's LEGACY? why did gege not make her death matter in the narrative? even if she (for whatever reason) came back(??) at the end, id still be rly mad & sad abt it cos i wanted to see her DO STUFF!! i wanted to see her kick some ass!!!! i wanted to see her grow!!!!! to open up with others!!!!! I WANTED TO SEE MORE OF HER. IM SO UPSET I WANT OUT

I want to make an Elder Scrolls character based on my last D&D character but it's. Very hard. Because she was such a unique and weird character that it is hard to translate that into an in-game character (info on her and my thoughts about how I could adapt her into an es character below the cut).

Her name was Eva "Halfblood" Akannathi, and she was a half-orc, half-goliath 18 year old bard (college of valor). But she was kind of an unconventional bard. She hated lying and dishonesty. Like, really loathed it. This girl has not lied once in the 18 years she's been alive and does not plan on ever doing it. She also considers illusions to be a form of lying.

This made playing through the campaign very interesting. At certain points of the campaign, she had to roll wisdom saving throws whenever her party had to lie to someone. If she succeeded, she managed to keep quiet. If she failed, she would blurt out the truth. She also disliked whenever her party members lied about anything. It didn't matter if it was for the greater good. She would rather die than tell a lie, and she wishes others felt the same.

Now, adapting her into a playable Elder Scrolls character is a bit tricky. You would think going with the Bard class would be the obvious choice. However, one of their major skills is Illusion, and given Eva's stubborn dislike of illusion, that's not exactly going to work. I could, of course, make a custom class, but I have so much anxiety about getting custom classes exactly right that it ends up just stressing me out whenever I try to create a custom class. But, maybe I'll try a custom class. That would probably be the best.

The race is a little less tricky, but there's still that "damn, I wish I could choose two races." Her in-game race would probably be orc, since that's the race she looks the most like. In my head, though, I'm thinking she would be half-orc, half-nord. I mean, D&D goliaths are resistant to cold damage and are tall, and Nords are basically the same, even if their coloration is different (goliaths have greyish skin and markings on their face, whereas Nords have white skin and no natural markings). What I really wish I could do is just take the cold resistance from Nords and just replace the Orc berserk thing with it because going berserk isn't really Eva's style lol (she's no barbarian!). But whatever, I suppose she can survive without her cold resistance.

It just really sucks because I loved playing her so much in D&D, and now that that campaign is over, I kinda miss her. But she's such a weird character that she's hard to play in any other setting.
