If you struggle with reading, a text-to-voice reader can be really helpful

Here are text to voice programs I use in my every day life.

Edge has probably one of the best text-to-voice readers that I can find for free. You get to pick from a variety of different voices, and the voices sound natural.

The best part is that you don't even need to install any add-ons or widgets to use this feature. It is a default part of Edge.

To use it, you can click the A))) symbol that appears on the right side of the URL bar, or you can right click anywhere in the text and select "read aloud from here."

If you have a PDF file, you can download the PDF, and then in your file explorer, right click on the pdf and select "open with..." and select microsoft edge.

Edge does sometimes struggle a bit with PDFs in that it will pause at the end of every line break, but it works extremely well for basic websites.

This is an option that is available for use on a windows PC or any other PC compatable with Edge

There is an Edge mobile app, but I have found it buggy and a bit tricky to use.

Make sure you are using the most up-to-date version of Word.

You can access the read aloud feature under the "review" tab, or once again, you can right click on a highlighted word in the text and select "read aloud."

It has a male and female voice, which sound fairly natural. You can only use the "natural" voices when connected to the internet. When you are offline, it will read with a much clunkier robot voice instead.

Here I was actually able to open a PDF of a whole book, convert it into an editable word document, and then Word actually began reading it for me.

This is a mobile app. I have tried multiple text to speech mobile apps and this is the one that I like the best.

Above is the icon as it appears on your phone and in the Google Play store, and below is what the document reader looks like.

This app is pretty awesome because it comes with both a document reader and a web browser! You do not have to copy and paste text into the reader, and it can read pretty much any PDF or regular web page.

It had a robot voice and not a "natural voice" but I have gotten used to the robot voice of this app and it doesn't particularly bother me. You can adjust the pitch and speed of the voice too.

I use this app literally all the time. It is perfect for "reading" books while driving or working.

It's important to note that no text to speech reader is perfect. The technology has come a long way. But whatever program you use, there are always going to be words that it misinterprets, documents it can't process, or formatting that it finds confusing.

Another thing to note is that if you struggle with reading on your own or you struggle with attention problems, you do actually need to practice reading unassisted. You will get better at reading unassisted as you practice. You will train up your attention span slowly as you read more and more. So if reading is difficult I highly encourage you to not put EVERYTHING you read into a text to speech app. I am speaking as someone who has ADHD and I know that reading difficulties are not just something that magically goes away. But you can improve your reading abilities and you should try to improve your reading skills for your own wellbeing.

However that doesn't mean you have to struggle unassisted. Text to speech readers can absolutely expand the amount of texts that are accessible to you and better yet, they can give you more time to read because you can multitask as you absorb literature.

Hi there! I was wondering how you set your fics as mature. I see you have an explanation on how to see mature posts but what about setting them? Or does tumblr do it automatically?

Oh hi! I'm gonna attach some screenshots and maybe it'll be easier to explain that way. (also I'm using apple laptop/cellphone so my screenshots could look different if you are using pc or android).

So for example, as I'm typing this I have an option at the bottom of the page on my laptop this is what it looks like ↓

So you'd select the tab that says 'everyone' at the very bottom and that pop-up shows what you can select - mature, etc. And that's it!

Now on mobile, it's a little different, but not much. When I'm responding to an ask on the mobile app I don't have the 'everyone' option so I have to set it as mature after I post which you can do by editing the post and select a community label there by following the directions below.

But when you're creating a new post on mobile, at the bottom you'll see the ‘everyone’ icon which is shaped like people ↓

Then clicking that you'll have the option to select 'Mature' and then from there what type ↓

All set!

BUT - tumblr will eventually do it for you if they see you have anything that falls under their 'mature' label (which includes smut). A few months ago tumblr started flagging my posts and marking them mature without me having to do anything but I was worried I'd somehow get shadowbanned or marked explicit so I went ahead and started just marking them mature just in case. Sometimes I forget to do it still, but I keep finding new posts that tumblr is marking mature for me (or someone is reporting my posts).

The ideas Dave is talking about in this podcast are serious (even if he is laughing a lot), and he spells them out in text at a site called Textcasting.org.

I think I get what Dave is saying but I’d need to spend more time thinking about it. To get buy in from all the big platforms would mean either compromise or extensions to the format that only certain platforms would use. In other words, it’s a can of worms.

That doesn’t mean it can’t be done and that it’s not worth doing. It just means it’ll be difficult.

We already have blogs, links, and RSS. I publish posts to my blog to other sources automagically. But, that means my platform has to know how the API to that platform works. If there were a standard format for uploading RSS or some other structured document format I could see that being appealing.

Would the publisher push the changes to various other platforms or would each platform pull the post, like RSS works today? 🤔

I like it when API’s are created to open up platforms but I have a feeling this one will be extremely limited. And what happened to using ActivityPub and Fediverse support? Why not do that? Oh, right, it would mean completely opening Threads to developers. They don’t want that because they need those eyeballs clearly focused on Threads.

Hey, how about starting with RSS? Let me subscribe to a users RSS feed for their posts. That would be really nice and allow me to follow some brands without cluttering my Threads timeline.

I’ve seriously considered going into the office one day a week to change things up and hang out around other people. I’ve been to our office less than 20 times since folks started returning. I got COVID last summer during a group on-site and more recently had an on-site to nail down some API design and someone had COVID and didn’t know it until they returned home at the end of the week. Thankfully I dodged that bullet.

As someone who never truly did the change between CDs and Digital... I mean...

(sorry for the terrible picture, I forget that I should remove the case of my phone when taking pics otherwise I get that pink glow on the right)

And as someone who decided to discover new bands from Russia which makes impossible for me to buy their albums because:

A) I'm broke

B) My country has a limit on how much money you can spend overseas and there is no warranty the the items will be delivered in time or delivered at all.

I had to burn some CDs by myself (I had to stop because finding CDs to burn became a mission) I've used 2 methods. Bear in mind I have an old computer that has a CD burner by itself.

1. Nero Express.

This software allows you to burn CDs and DVDs (I think even Blu-Ray but since I lack that hardware I don't know). It's quite intuitive, you open the Nero Burning ROM and it lets you of choose what to burn.

The one thing I don't like is that when making CD it only allows you burn a certain amount of time, not the full disk (so, let's say 10 songs when the capacity could be between 15 and 20). So, you just have to pay attention to that.

2. Windows Media Player.

Yes, I use Windows, I've told you that I'm broke and I also live by the end of the world. Get over it! Windows Media player lets you record CDs and this was my preferred method to use because I was able to fit 2 albums in 1 CD (opposite Nero). Again, it's quite intuitive, you enter a new CD, select what you want to do, drag the files and hit Enter or OK (can't quite remember, it's been a while).

Now, to get music from Internet.

1. The Oldest Trick: You can put the word "bajar" ("download" in Spanish, I never tried using an English word to do it) between the WWW. and Youtube (so www.bajaryoutube.com/WHATEVERVIDEOURLYOUWANT) and it lets you download MP3 or MP4. However sometimes copyright is an issue so, if possible, do not to use the original video on the official page of your selected artist, there is always someone that reuploaded the song on a fanvideo or something like that.

2. BEWARE WITH THIS ONE: there are websites that let you download either music or videos from Youtube (and other websites as well, you need to taylor your search). The main risk is for the malware/virus that are lurking in them. I use this site a lot but a friend of mine did got a virus by accidentally clicking on one of the pop-ups that show up when doing the stuff. So, be mindful and keep your PC/Cellphone antivirus up to date... and try not to touch anything you don't have to. The good thing is that in that website, copyright is not an issue (or maybe a very rare one) it can download anything.

3. Atube Catcher: my aunt uses this software to download videos. I've never used it myself but if she can do it, it is simple enough (she is not very tech savvy). I think its only for video, so MP4, but you can always download the video and separate the music on a Video Editing software (I use a cracked version of Filmora 9 by Wondershare because the free version leaves watermarks).

4. OBS Studio : this is quite a versatile software that lets you record and stream. If you want to record a video, you have to select the items you want to record (screen, audio output) and always pay attention to that (for instance if you want to record any kind of virtual gathering, you must select "microphone" as well, otherwise whatever you say won't be recorded). It takes a learning curve but its not that hard after all.

5. Telegram: I know that USA is in love with text messages but in the rest of the world we use apps that just need a working line and WiFi to run (so, no charging fees for every message. You might have just the activation code sent on an SMS and nothing else). In Argentina we use mostly WhatsApp but a few times their servers went down -hasn't happened in a while- leaving us incommunicated for almost a whole day, thats why at home we also use Telegram. The good thing about Telegram is that it has fangroups (channels, something WhatsApp is trying to copy) as well and people post media (pictures, videos, songs) in them as they would do in any other Social Media. I found the entire discographies of Агата Кристи (Agata Kristi) and Король и Шут (The King and the Jester) in here and I'm so thankful for it... it stops me from using Spotify. They won't be on MP4 but on m4a, still they can be reproduced and burned on CD by Windows Media Player.

6. VK: В Контакте is basically Russian Facebook the layout is pretty much the same BUT you can share media on it (books, movies, music) however to be able to download it you must pay a fee. So it's not for everyone, but it's an option.

Hopefully you'll find this tools useful on your endevour into piracy.

PS: I do encourage you to buy the original CDs as much as you can. I don't know much about the new wave but old-school artists usually get a big chunk of their money from their physical sales. Lately it was replaced by their sold tickets because no-one was buying CDs anymore.

Unlike streaming services that pay cents on the dollar for each listener/reproduction, labels have a better deal with them (still not 50/50 or anything alike, but better) so buying physical media does 2 things: shows that people are interested in them (making them profitable) and gives them some bucks.

oh i keep forgetting to ask this question!

important background: i only ever use tumblr on a PC, in a browser. that is, i'm not talking about tumblr mobile/tumblr apps, which i have never used! so if i'm describing something that doesn't sound at all familiar to you, that may be why.

so for posts with images, i always want to reblog a version with an image description, if one exists. (to read a bit about why this is important, see this short post about what good even simple IDs do and/or my image descriptions tag.) it is fairly straightforward, though sometimes annoying, to find out if someone has added an ID to the body of the post - i just open up the notes and scroll past all the replies and whatnot until i see a reblog that starts with a square bracket and then "Image description". if i don't find one, sometimes i write an ID myself, but i prefer not to duplicate effort if it's already been done.

i learned fairly recently that tumblr also has a built-in "Image Description" field which the person uploading the image can access by clicking on the three dots in the bottom right corner of the image (in the beta post editor, anyway). the uploader can then write in this field a short (200 characters max) explanation of what the image is.

you know when you're scrolling the dash and there are all those blocks of color gradient because the images haven't loaded yet? in the top left corner of each block, it'll simply say "Image" if the uploader didn't write anything in that Image Description field. if they did write something in that field, it'll appear in the block. it's pretty handy because it lets you know what the image is when it's not loading, and it's accessible to screenreaders used by visually impaired people and others.

the problem i'm running into is that, when an image loads properly, i can't figure out how to tell if it has this kind of image description! the description doesn't appear as hover text, nor does it show up if i right-click the image and click Inspect Accessibility Properties. i can only ever see it when the image isn't loading, and usually images load for me and i don't know how to make them...not do that.

this means i go looking for an ID in the notes, or write my own ID, when maybe i don't have to. (sometimes 200 characters isn't sufficient to describe the image, but sometimes it is! and it's always better than nothing, if i can't find anything and can't write an ID myself for whatever reason.)

"Minecraft" launched over a decade ago and the video game is as popular as ever. With over 126 million players worldwide, the voxel-based survival game drops adventurers into a world where they can craft, build, explore, destroy, and create to their heart's content. Aided by tools, blocks, and creativity, the simple sandbox world allows anyone on PC, console, or smartphone the chance to project their own feelings and creations directly into their virtual space.

"As long as you have the mind for it, you can really just do anything," 17-year-old "Minecraft" YouTuber Purpled, who has 700,000 subscribers, told Insider. "Because of how simple Minecraft is and how easy it is to build with it, you can create whatever you want."

In recent years, Microsoft's never-ending game has evolved into a tool for content creators to express themselves, leading to high-profile collaborations with some of YouTube's biggest personalities. By creating their own private "Minecraft" servers, creators have been able to craft ornate worlds and stories that they can explore in streams and videos, immersing fans in a cinematic-style universe.

Minecraft has a long history on YouTube

"Minecraft's" versatility has made it an incredibly popular game for content creators and influencers. In 2012, a change in YouTube's algorithm promoting watch time over video clicks led to a renaissance of "Let's Players" who recorded themselves reacting and playing their favorite games. "Minecraft" was one of the most successful, spawning some of the largest channels of the time like SkyDoesMinecraft (11.3 million subscribers) and Tobuscus (6.25 million subs).

Though the popularity of "Minecraft" remained fairly steady, content about the title waned a bit over the next decade either due to content fatigue or newer titles like "Fortnite" taking the spotlight. 2020 flipped the title back into the forefront, with both streamers and YouTubers capitalizing on the title's popularity.  

The biggest breakout star for "Minecraft" in the past few years is Dream, an expert, faceless player with a neon-green avatar with over 17 million YouTube subscribers. YouTube labeled him the second overall content creator of the year and his streams consistently pull in a quarter of a million people.

In May of 2020, Dream decided to create a small, private server for his friends to play around in. This SMP server, or "survival multiplayer," started off with only a handful of content creators being invited. Soon, the server would expand to over 30 members, bringing in millions of views from fans who chronicle every moment of the lore the creators eventually created.

Viewership on Twitch of "Minecraft" content went from 17 million hours watched in January 2020 to 74 million in January of 2021, according to data from analytics company Rainmaker.gg.  

How the Dream SMP grew from a private server with friends to a cultural milestone

Purpled has been playing "Minecraft" for the past eight years and is a high-ranking player in a multiplayer game mode called "Bed Wars." He had started talking to Dream in the summer of 2019, when the pair were both small, mutual fans.

"When the SMP was in its infancy, I just asked him if there was any room because he said how it's just for friends and if a friend wants to join, they can," Purpled said. "So I asked him, he said, 'Sure.' He sent me the IP and I was in."

The server was originally just a place to create and hangout, with no intention of creating an overarching story or plot.

Fundy, a 19-year-old Dutch YouTuber with 2.7 million subscribers joined when only a handful of other creators were on."I had talked to Dream on a few occasions, out-of-the-blue Dream sent me a message about a survival world that they had going on. It was very small at first," Fundy said. "I thought it could be a fun little side-project I could stream every now and then on Twitch, so I decided to join."

Fundy joined in the early days alongside Wilbur Soot, a 23-year-old YouTuber with 3.8 million subscribers. Soot, after attempting to create an "illegal potion shop" on the server, decided to establish a nation of non-Americans players called L'Manberg. Soot said he wrote a "treatment" for how the formation of his country would go, creating an official canon that fans could follow along with.

"I was invited into the Dream SMP near its inception but I only joined fully when I had an idea for building a country in 'Minecraft'," Soot said. "I write up a series of plot hooks and points that should tie together, however we improv dialogue and comedy throughout to take us from point to point."

These streams and pieces of content all had a canon that could be followed and consumed like a television show. L'Manberg eventually started a war against Dream for its independence, staging a rebellion chronicled in YouTube videos with millions of views.

These streams and videos aren't just randoms in "Minecraft" trying to defeat the end-game Ender Dragon — these are performers putting on a show that their fans can't miss. As the lore expanded, so did the rules needed to keep a sense of continuity and order. For example, each player only has three lives before they are removed and deleted from the server.

"It went from a casual survival game to a whole story-line filled with plots and twists," Fundy said. "Role-playing at this point is a key-feature of the Dream SMP, some parts are scripted, some parts are improv, and some parts are 'non-canon,' where it is just counted as a standard 'Minecraft' server."

The fan communities have risen up and made their voices heard

Over the next few months, the lore and world would continue to grow and so would the fan base. Hundreds of thousands of viewers would tune in for these streams, trying to keep up with the lore and content. To help catalog the story, a network of fans established themselves as lore keepers, documenting each moment for those that had to miss a stream.  

The "DREAMSMP UPDATES!" account on Twitter has established itself as one of the most popular locations to find all this content and lore on social media. Starting in December 2020, the account has grown to over 147,000 users with just a team of seven administrators, ages 14-17, in different locations around the world, posting updates and stream notifications for fans. "Minecraft" is a game that appeals to all ages, but the audience for this content tends to skew younger, with 41 percent of Twitch's user base being 16 to 24, according to GlobalWebIndex.

"You can tell they're all friends and it's a lot more lighthearted in general and it shows," mod on the "DREAMSMP UPDATES!" Twitter account eclaire said over chat app Discord. "When it's not lore you see them actually having good chemistry and it really pulls you in because it almost feels like being pulled into a friend group."

User SamHQ first started the fan account with a couple of friends from high school but the group quickly expanded after the account tweeted that they needed more fans of certain streamers to join. She is online and runs the account "24/7" but "it's just like answering a text."

"When I started the account I knew lots of people who couldn't catch up because of work or school," SamHQ said. "So I gathered friends to help and now people rely on us when someone's streaming or to catch up with the lore when they can't watch."

For the fans that run the update account, keeping up with the Dream SMP isn't dissimilar to following the Marvel Cinematic Universe or a long-running television show. Characters come and go, but the improv and roleplay stay.

"The Dream SMP did something really special — taking an original idea, creating new things that have never been seen on 'Minecraft' and incorporating them with humor and characters that you can become easily attached with," mod NotAlex said.

Though other SMP roleplay servers, like EarthSMP and SMPLive, have been created over the years, none have been as successful or popular as the Dream SMP.

Finding a fan base on the Dream SMP can lead to major growth.

For the performers on the server, addressing fans and their responses comes with the territory.

"The Dream SMP viewers are very important to the Dream SMP, and the fact that they openly speak their mind about how a certain stream went only helps the streamers improve," Fundy said. "It's basically an instant review of what was liked and what wasn't."

Like most major fandoms with a young audience, fanfiction of these streamers has popped up online. Dozens of Dream fics and drawings exist online, some going a bit far and putting underage characters together. Dream responded on Twitter to those "ships," writing that they shouldn't "ship creators that are uncomfortable with it, and especially not minors."

The Dream stans, or the super fans, also tend to be very vocal online about the SMP. Hashtags on Twitter like #dreamnotfound and #dreamfanart consistently break-through to the trending page, confusing those who have no idea this world exists. The most ferocious of stans sometimes overstep the boundary between polite disagreement and outright harassment. This vocal minority has sent death threats and waves of harassment at those who criticize or disagree with their favorite content creators.  

The growth and future of these channels is in large part due to the Dream SMP server

The popularity of Dream SMP has helped grow the content creators that take part in it. Since joining the server, Purpled is gaining three times as many subscribers a month on YouTube and has been introduced to an entirely new fan base. His streams used to pull in 3,000 viewers but now his average is closer to 35,000 to 40,000 viewers.

"Some people think of them as obsessive or stalker fans, but those are people that really like to talk about certain creators and really get invested in things," Purpled said. "And it's really nice because they care a lot more and connect more with the creator than the content."

These creators understand the power of the fan base and know that they come for the content.

"I think the Dream SMP is popular thanks to the brilliant creators and funny improv moments," Soot said. "I think we'll be seeing the emergence of a huge wave of roleplay-centric gaming communities."

This Tumblr is a collaborative custom card competition blog for Magic: the Gathering. Each week, one of our rotating judges creates a contest prompt, and then people submit their entries. At the end of the week, the cards are judged and winners are chosen.

Why is the Inventor’s Fair?

Since perhaps the inception of the game, players have been making their own cards. The creation of the internet, fandom, and online communities have led to many people sharing those cards online. Part of the love of the game is through creating new mechanics, ideas, stories and interactions. This blog exists as a challenge space for people who enjoy sharing their ideas in a low-stakes competitive sphere.

The FAQ page felt a little outdated, and people were asking questions that were there, so it’s clear that not everyone is using it. This is a pinned post with all the available information, starting points, etc.

I’d like to submit a card. Where do I begin?

Fantastic! Good to have you on board!

Firstly, make sure that you’re following this blog! That’s the most important part, so that you can get updates and see future timing.

Secondly, if you’d like, join Discord and jump into the server! Our Discord has general channels, MTG chat, and most importantly, a workshop where you can show folks your designs and get feedback.

Once that’s set up:

If you’re on a PC, it’s recommended that you download the program Magic Set Editor, which is the gold standard for customization. MSE has a Discord as well where you can ask questions and troubleshoot. If you’re on iOS or Android, you can download the Artificer app. Other browser-based card creators are easily searchable if those options don’t work. And if all else fails, you may submit as a text, which a mod/judge can put into a program as an image.

Every Sunday, a new prompt will be announced. It will be under the “#announcement” tag on the blog, in the Announcement channel of the Discord, and easily scrollable on the blog. If you can’t find it, just ask and someone will tell you.

I’ve never designed a card before, though.

That’s alright! If you’d like to start, there aren’t too many resources, but there are lots of suggestions.

“Design 101,” by Mark Rosewater (head of MTG R&D). This article goes through some basic design principles and links to other parts of MTG design.

Do you know what you want your card to do? Look up cards that have similar wording on Scryfall! The Oracle text on cards, which is much different than the printed text, will give you an idea on how to properly word your cards.

Sometimes you might like to use a mechanic or idea, but it’s been out of the game for a while. Modern design sensibility changes things. Feel free to fight against the meta, but keep in mind that there are things which have changed over time.

On this blog, we give commentary to all entries. Here is the tag to all the commentary that the judges have given on winners, runners-up, and entries alike. See what individual judges say, see what things repeat, see what corner cases there might be, etc. Hopefully that’ll help show what a winning card looks like.

You are free to submit again. Your newest entry will always supersede your previous entry, so make sure that you’ve fixed everything that you need to fix. Use Oracle wording and Workshop feedback to make sure you’ve done everything you can!

But please, don’t spam the box with a bunch of iterations. We don’t want to have to impose limits.

Important FAQs:

Can I submit more than one card to be judged?

No. Some contests will ask for multiple cards, such as a Meld contest, but that is the only time. If you send in multiple cards, the most recent card will be the judged one.

Regarding other double-faced cards, modal DFCs (such as in Zendikar Rising and Kaldheim) are effectively more than one card and should not be submitted unless asked for. Transforming DFCs (such as in Innistrad or Ixalan) should be taken with a grain of salt. Making a tDFC without a specific contest or strong justification may impact your chances of winning depending on the judge and contest.

That said, there will be tDFC contests, mDFC contests, and multi-card contests in the future. Anything is possible.

Can I submit silver-bordered cards?

We have had silver-bordered contests in the past, as well as contests that specifically allow for silver-bordered cards to be submitted. However.

A majority of Magic's design is based in black-border interactions, an understandable rules system where balance and universality is key. Silver-bordered design often ignores or circumvents those balances. The designs are more difficult to judge against other black-border designs because the criteria are wildly different. For that purpose, we ask that you only design for black-border unless otherwise specified.

Can I use art for my cards?

Yes, as long as the artist is properly credited. “Unknown” is not an acceptable credit for obvious reasons. “Deviantart” is not an acceptable credit because they all have usernames and in some cases have their real name attached, which you should use. “Getty Images” is not an acceptable credit, as they too have names/usernames.

If you’re the artist (which, by the way, is wonderful), you do have to credit yourself! You’ll be reminded of that. You’re free to just use your username, but you have to have something besides “me” or “self.”

Art does not impact your chances of winning. Art does not impact how your cards are viewed. You 100% are not required to use art.

Come on, I just want to use art. Do I have to get credit?

Yes. This is not negotiable. Arguments, multiple infractions/reminders, and belligerence will result in a ban.

Why? Because on principle, it’s theft. No, it’s not a 1:1 felony, but it’s a selfish, lazy practice to purposefully ignore the work of artists and photographers. Every Magic artist is credited appropriately, and for good reason. We have standards, and will hold you to them.

What’s the purpose of winning?

Inventor’s Fair does not make profit, does not have monetary prizes, does not ask for money, does not do ‘raffles,’ and does not have sponsors. So why are we here?

We’re here because we love the game.

Most people don’t play Magic for fame and fortune. Commander, kitchen table, cube—none of those are done with monetary value in mind. You play the game because it’s fun, winning feels fun, and even if you don’t win then participating feels fun.

The bottom line is: if it’s not fun for you, don’t do it! You’re free to observe and to watch and comment and do all of those things without the stress of engagement. This blog has far more followers than we do entries. And that’s okay! You are under no obligation to submit if you don’t want to.

What makes a winning card?

There’s no one right answer. That said, each week’s contest will have their individual criteria and will tell you what that judge is looking for.

In general, just good balance and design based on listed expectations is key for getting onto the podium. Each judge has different things that they’re looking for, we’re on a rotating schedule, and we all have different quibbles and tastes and whatnot. So if you want, you can always try to play to the judges, but that’s not as recommended as making something that you like yourself.

Also, keep in mind: We do not work for WotC, Hasbro, or MTG. We’re not professionals, we’re not published well-known game designers by any means, and we’re only human. We go off of what we go off of, and that’s that. Disagreements about what makes a winner will occur, but keep in mind that this is pretty low-stakes and that we’re only doing our best. We ask that you do your best too.

I’m [neurodivergent/POC/disabled/LGBTQ+/etc.]. Is this a safe place for me?

National Security, is it an excuse to snoop on our private information? Or is it actually protecting our borders from threats. These few years, it’s a very common action to cover up our laptop cameras in fear, that someone is watching us.

James Scott, senior fellow at the Institute for Critical Infrastructure Technology told Metro.co.uk that it’s surprisingly easy for hackers to take over your camera – or that sometimes, the malware could be installed before you even buy your computer.

So, I’m taking a wild guess you have one or more of these apps: WhatsApp, Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn or Viber and if not, have you been living under a rock all your life? But did you know when the user grants an app access to their camera and microphone, the app could do the following:

• Access both the front and the back camera.

• Record you at any time the app is in the foreground.

• Take pictures and videos without telling you.

• Upload the pictures and videos without telling you.

• Upload the pictures/videos it takes immediately.

• Run real-time face recognition to detect facial features or expressions.

• Livestream the camera on to the internet.

• Detect if the user is on their phone alone, or watching together with a second person.

• Upload random frames of the video stream to your web service and run a proper face recognition software which can find existing photos of you on the internet and create a 3D model based on your face.

So, as I’m sure you can agree, this an exceptionally serious matter. Where can I prove all these ‘allegations’? And so next we come to the famous scandal- Optic Nerve.

Edward Snowden revealed an GCHQ and NSA program called Optic Nerve. The operation was a bulk surveillance program under which they captured webcam images every five minutes from Yahoo users’ video chats and then stored them for future use. It is estimated that between 3% and 11% of the images captured contained “undesirable nudity”.

Britain's surveillance agency GCHQ -Government Communications Headquarters,, with aid from the US National Security Agency, intercepted and stored the webcam images of millions of internet users not suspected of wrongdoing, secret documents reveal.

GCHQ files dating between 2008 and 2010 explicitly state that a surveillance program codenamed Optic Nerve collected still images of Yahoo webcam chats in bulk and saved them to agency databases, regardless of whether individual users were an intelligence target or not.

In one six-month period in 2008 alone, the agency collected webcam imagery – including substantial quantities of sexually explicit communications – from more than 1.8 million Yahoo user accounts globally.

Government security agencies like the GCHQ can also have access to your devices through in-built backdoors. This means that these security agencies can tune in to your phone calls, read your messages,

capture pictures of you, stream videos of you, read your emails, steal your files at any moment they please.

Yahoo reacted furiously to the webcam interception when approached by the Guardian. The company denied any prior knowledge of the program, accusing the agencies of "a whole new level of violation of our users' privacy".

The documents also chronicle GCHQ's sustained struggle to keep the large store of sexually explicit imagery collected by Optic Nerve away from the eyes of its staff, though there is little discussion about the privacy implications of storing this material in the first place.

So yes. The government (US and UK) if they truly wanted to could access all of your private videos, pictures and information to their own database. But why worry? Unless, you’re hiding something, I wouldn't see a reason to fret… Invasion of privacy.

It may be amusing to imagine a poor FBI agent watching you sing along to music videos and cry over Netflix but we have over 66.5 million people in the UK and barely a thousand Government Communications Headquarters agents. Unless you are an immediate threat to the country, I doubt they will even think about you.

The real worry for all of us is harmful malware, take for example an application called Metasploit on the hacking platform Kali uses an Adobe Reader (which over 60% of users still use) exploit to open a listener on the user’s computer. You alter the PDF with the program, send the user the malicious file, they open it, and hey presto – you have total control over their device remotely.

Once a user opens this PDF file, the hacker can then:

1. Install whatever software/app they like on the user’s device.

2. Use a keylogger to grab all of their passwords.

3. Steal all documents from the device.

4. Take pictures and stream videos from their camera.

5. Capture past or live audio from the microphone.

6. Upload incriminating images/documents to their PC, and notify the police.

Internet safety is a vital thing to acknowledge if you don’t want your gadgets accessed by hackers and even the government too!
