Another idea: Communities on Tumblr
For a while now folks have asked us for better ways to connect with other people who share similar interests. Weā€™re listening, and at Labs weā€™ve been looking into fulfilling that need, Tumblr style.
Introducing Communities, a new place to connect with others on Tumblr:
Tumblr media
Here in Labs, weā€™re working on big ideas that could transform how Tumblr is used, while keeping that Tumblr vibe alive. You can see one of those ideas above. Weā€™re calling it ā€œCommunitiesā€, a new dedicated space on Tumblr for people to share and discuss all the content they love. Communities can cover topics like your favorite show, artist, movie, video game, your school, your board game group, friend group, big or small, whatever you want.
Each Community has their own semi-private safer space away from the regular dashboard where you can interact with other Tumblr users who share the same interests and passions as you. There are moderators and members (you!), rules, and privacy settings. Each community has its own feed of posts from members, separate from your Following and For You feeds. Interactions within community spaces stay there and replies will work more like a traditional comment section. Folks will be able to reblog posts into a community, but not out ā€” at least not yet.
Weā€™re very excited for you to try it, and help define the best path forward. What we have is a prototype to help us validate the idea, but thereā€™s still plenty of questions that need answering. Over the next couple of weeks, weā€™ll be reaching out to people across Tumblr, and the internet at large, to try our prototype. Based on the feedback we get, weā€™ll iterate on the idea to see what resonates best with all of you on Tumblr.
If this sounds interesting, please like, reblog, or reply to this post, and weā€™ll invite you to beta test this feature when we roll it out to a wider Tumblr audience, as a little perk for following the Labs blog.
Stay tuned for more!

hi whump community let me tell you about a drug called datura!! because boy is it a doozy.
datura is a deliriant, which means it is a hallucinogenic drug capable of causing serious and often terrifying delusions and hallucinations that are literally indistinguishable from reality in the userā€™s mind.
It is poisonous and part of the nightshade family, and the dosage used to get high off of it is actually very close to the lethal dose. it is also not only entirely legal in most places but also very accessible. itā€™s grown as a house plant, actually. most people who trip off of it only do it once because of how awful of an experience it is. also trips last like a long time (anywhere from 12 hours to 3 days if i remember correctly?)
the hallucinations that come with this drug are incredibly horrifying, making it literal nightmare fuel. also the more long term effects from it can include permanent psychosis and lingering delusions. fun stuff.
common hallucination experiences from this drug include the following:
- heavy gore
- seeing corpses
- feeling like youā€™ve been transported to an alternate dimension (hell)
- seeing people or entities you know (but a little fucked up)
- parasites and bugs
- feeling as though your organs are falling out of your body
- shadows in the back of your vision
- smoking phantom cigarettes or eating phantom food (phantom in the sense that they arenā€™t really there)
- torture scenarios
all in all, i think itā€™s a rlly interesting thing that can definitely be used in whump. like imagine a whumper lacing someoneā€™s tea with that. the whumpee wouldnā€™t even be aware that something was done to them due to the fact that they physically cannot tell the difference between delusion and reality. real fun stuff. probably need an immortal whumpee though just cuz if someone takes this thereā€™s a high chance of them getting hospitalized.

whumpee surrendering themselves to something they don't want to do, something they know will hurt them, because there is no other alternative. perhaps it's their only way out of a sticky situation. perhaps the threat of whumper punishing them is more than enough to make them comply. either way, they have to fight against their own instincts, their own desires, their own dignity, in order to give themselves up to the torment. it's like a swine walking into a slaughterhouse; a death march.
bonus if whumpee is usually very defiant and self-assured, even if the face of danger. what possibly could've broken their spirit bad enough to make them behave like this?

I am starved of lab whump content with lots of condescending praise by whumper XD
šŸ–¤ Whumper cups whumpee's chin and jaw softly, leaning over them where they're strapped down to the medical slab. "That's right, sweetheart. Just hold still for me so I get a nice, clean incision, alright? We wouldn't want things to get messy. After all, I only have so much blood I can pump back into you."
šŸ–¤ "Oh that's beautiful, whumpee. Did you know you have the most perfect specimen of a liver I've ever seen? I'll have to clone it, I think."
šŸ–¤ Whumper hums the lilting strains of an opera or a ballet, grabbing a sedated whumpee and dancing around the lab with them in their arms. "You're a fantastic dance partner when you're like this, whumpee."
šŸ–¤ Whumper smiles and pulls on a pair of medical gloves, snapping them at the wrists before tapping on the glass of whumpee's tank. "You're coming along just beautifully, whumpee. Shall I hold up a mirror so you can see the changes?"

Communities closed beta is here
Hello again! Weā€™re back with an update on Communities, a big idea we had last year that weā€™ve been working on steadily since then. Weā€™re abnormally jazzed to announce that weā€™re beginning a ā€œclosed betaā€ phase of this new feature, which means many of you will get to play with it soon!
We want to build this whole thing together, with as much input from all of you as possible. Weā€™ve read and re-read the feedback from our previous post, and weā€™ve been surveying and interviewing people about this idea for a few months now. But itā€™s time to open this up even more for hands-on testing.
Weā€™ve already begun reaching out to most of you who interacted with our previous post, as promised, with a survey asking whether youā€™d be interested in helping (check your email!). Over the next couple of weeks, weā€™ll be using the results of that survey to narrow down who weā€™d like to help test Communities in these initial batches.
The process is looking a bit like this:
If you received a Communities survey email to your registered Tumblr email address, fill it out! If youā€™re interested in helping us in this beta test period, thatā€™s your way of potentially getting early access. If you did not receive an email with the Communities survey, donā€™t fret! Communities will be rolling out to more people as we expand our testing.Ā
Weā€™ll go through the results and choose a diverse range of community ideas to gather a wide array of feedback.
Selected testers will receive a second survey with more detailed questions about their proposed community. Very practical stuff, like the name, title, and description, whether it should be public or private, the About page contents, its own community guidelines, and more.
We will create the new Tumblr community on your behalf using the information supplied. Weā€™re building the tools that will let people create and edit communities themselves, so eventually youā€™ll be able to change them without needing our help. But for now, weā€™re creating and editing them for you, as needed.
After weā€™ve created the community, youā€™ll be made its first admin. Everything from here on out is up to you ā€“ Tumblr staff wonā€™t be in your community (unless you invite us, of course). Youā€™ll be able to invite anyone on Tumblr to your community. However, your community will have a population cap to start, limiting how many people can be in it and invited, as a way of keeping this beta test somewhat contained and manageable for us. Weā€™ll be able to raise that population cap for communities that are growing and if we want to test further in that direction.
And throughout, weā€™ll be asking for feedback, both in some special communities for everyone in the closed beta, and via more surveys and the Support tickets we receive.
This closed beta version of Communities is far from finished, and thatā€™s part of the reason we want to start opening it up to more of you for feedback. There are a lot of rough edges and known issues, but we think itā€™s far enough along that itā€™s usable enough for testing. We need feedback in order to feel like weā€™re building the right thing.
The very first public community is called ā€œCommunities Feedbackā€ for this reason! We want everyone helping us test out communities to tell us about it, so people in this closed beta will be in there by default. We want to use that space to be more public and real-time about new pieces weā€™re building, bugs weā€™re fixing, things we know are broken, and answers to common questions. There is an additional, private community for community admins, to help shape how administrating and moderating these spaces will work. And if you donā€™t want to use those spaces, you can always use the ā€œFeedbackā€ category in our Support form.
Stay tuned for more, and keep an eye on that Communities Feedback space if youā€™d like to see how things are changing over time.

ok i know thereā€™s a lot of hype about robots who are cold, calculated, and cruel, but hear me out for a sec.
a robot who perfectly understands the scope of human emotions and how they work, even if they canā€™t exactly experience them. They know just the right ways to trigger them. Just the right ways to get under their skin. To manipulate them. After all, while human nature is complex, it ultimately still follows a pattern. And you can predict patterns.
i love the idea of a robot being so fascinated with human emotions that it might press people to their limits just to see how they handle it. Just to find new reactions, new patterns.

It's probably been done before, but. I'm a sucker for when a whumpee gets taken out of a bad situation by rescuers with dubious motives. Things that really blur the line between rescue and capture. I eat that stuff up.
Military whump is great for this. Injured soldier whumpee getting captured by enemy soldiers and ending up in an enemy hospital, being given medical care. But they're worried about what's going to happen next. Are they going to be locked up? Tortured? Do the enemy medical staff really have their best interests at heart? Great opportunity to build tension.
Honestly any time whumpee wakes up in an unknown hospital/lab/whatever can be an opportunity to play this, not knowing if they're going to be helped or harmed.
Whumpee getting "rescued" and soon finding out that their "rescuer" is actually a whumper.
Or, in contrast: whumpee getting captured/rescued by the group they've been led to believe are enemies/evil/etc, only to find out that they've been lied to, and their rescuers actually aren't all that bad after all.
Do you have any more prompts in this vein? Feel free to add them!

whumpee looking at themself in the mirror after a particularly gruelling experiment, or perhaps a series of experiments, that changed them physically. seeing what had changed; what they had gained, what they had lost. looking at their own reflection and not recognizing the gaunt, tired face staring back at them
