Do you have an analysis to She Got Away?

Thank you for this question. I think if she got away as a Haylor song that had some details changed to make it a generic 1D song.

It is likely from February 2014 - fans first posted it was registered in November 2014 (after it didn’t appear on Four), although the band recorded it. While making WTNY and I Know Places with Taylor in Conway Studios he also saw Harry there (Four was in production)

Ryan has specified at least 4 other writing meetings with them:

29 January 2012 - W hotel in Westwood LA - to Zach Sang, that sounded early. 1D stayed at the W in 2012. No mention of a song just annoyed about the similar band names.

19 April 2013 - Manchester - to Capital FM - Right Now (OneRepublic was in London, One Direction in Manchester and Midnight Memories was in production. ...also after that date is when he went back to the US to get the Peace ring and Taylor wrote I Wish You Would). He says he wrote 'something else with one of them' presumably Harry as Right Now refers to CBBH and Harry loved it.

February 2014 - Conway Studios LA - to New York Post 2019 - when Taylor and Harry were there. The rest of the band was in the UK. I think this is when She Got Away was likely written. Harry wrote it with Ryan Tedder and Noel Zancanella, both who worked on Welcome to NY. Ryan also said he saw Harry and Taylor at the studio then (I know places & welcome to NY from the same sessions, we also know Harry was there when JABOYH was written while hanging around Conway in January 2014. Style, Shake it off were also recorded then. It’s widely reported this song was for Four, fan first posted about it being registered in November 2014 after Four released without it.

Jennie in She got Away seems like a composite rather than an actual person. She is enigmatic, contradictory and mysterious. She is very much of the Diana/Georgia Rose archetype who is a vessel that 1D's fans could see themselves in or aspire to be. Harry's love of older music is clear, it's very Bob Dylan-inspired storytelling through characters, wandering and the places named.

Verse One: Liam & Harry] I met this girl the other night On the streets of New Orleans She said I'm trying to find myself On the run from Tennessee She had a diamond in one ear And patches on her jeans Oh yeah, oh yeah, the girl she got to me

The first verse reminds me of Taylor in the 'On the run from Tennessee' especially if the song is written in the same session as Welcome to New York, she was on the run from country music, the success of Red and her home of Tennessee.

The 'Diamond in one ear and patches on her jeans 'is a perfect description for this transitional era of Taylor - on the success of her last Country-pop album singing about moving to New York for a complete pop album. This line is very much Taylor at that time. It is a brilliant line as it works for the 1D listener who is an evolving young woman.

Jennie has a way with words Yeah, she always speaks in quotes She said that she ain't ever Met a man like me before She told me she just won a trip to Mexico Oh yeah, oh yeah On the radio Oh yeah, oh yeah Someday she will go

She has a way with words is a girl who writes, speaks in quotes is someone who writes heavily in references and metaphor... sounds like someone we know. 'She said she ain't never met a man like me before / she won a trip to Mexico' this sounds like the intended listener is fan fiction writers, coming up with the scenario where they meet Harry.

The 'never met anyone like me' line to me has me wondering how many of Taylor's Exes would come back to the studio to hear her next album be recorded and spend days collaborating on writing love songs about her while she does.. I think that's still a list of 1.

The chorus has Harry and the muse separated by the world, he is dreaming of her, it fits nicely with the fanfiction listener. There's a nice call out to 'half the world away'.

The 'so does every man who meets her' reminds me of Fool's Gold's 'you turn it on for everyone you meet' but here it is loving. And a nice 'she's coming back someday' adorable for writing this the same week as Style's 'Everytime we crash down we come back again'

The tattoo is cute, a clear 'not Taylor or anyone he'd dated.' unless the tattoo is on him and she doesn't know who it was for. 'when she was with me'

If you've been around Vampire: the Masquerade for any significant length of time, you'll have heard the 1:100,000 ratio passed around.

Discard this. Ignore this. Screw this up, do a shit on it, nail it to a frisbee, and fling it over the rainbow. It's arbitrary, it's frequently contradicted, it persists in fandom largely because it's a hard number on which the brain battens and sticks, and it's got no relevance whatsoever to how many vampires YOUR city needs.

Likewise, anything from the sourcebooks that gives you any impression that you need seven Tremere before you can have a Regent, or a dozen Ventrue to fill out the bottom rung of the Board? Yeet that. Those aren't characters; they're filler. A needless strain on the night to night. They probably exist, shunted off into suburbia with cleaver families or otherwise keeping themselves to themselves, but please don't feel like you need to know their names or have statblocks for them. They do not matter. They are there for verisimilitude's sake; spackle for the brain wrinkles of tidy minds.

You'll have Player Characters. They'll need sires, and they may have a Mawla or an Adversary. In an ideal world that's where you should start: build around the things the players put on their sheets, i.e. the things they've signalled they want in the game.

We do not live in an ideal world. At the present moment in time, my brain has been sparked by an impromptu chat from one of my D&D group who's been watching LA/NY By Night and getting back into Vampire. This particular group are now considering a pivot when we're done with our current D&D adventure, and I am reconsidering the handful of ideas I had for a Manchester based story some years ago. We have a sense of what clans are cool: we're probably looking at Toreador, Tzimisce and Lasombra (which is weird) and probably Anarchs because I know what these gremlins are like, and I want to lean into Ventrue and the Anarch pillar clans (Brujah, Gangrel, Ministry) because we're gonna have to fill out the conventional sect members.

The truth is, you've probably got an idea or two about your city already. That's why, a lot of the time, I actually start with the domains.

Most cities kind of divide themselves into domains naturally. If you know the city, you can do what I'm doing right now and go "hmm, Oxford Road would make a good seat for a Ventrue Prince with this feeding limitation and that power base... Deansgate feels more anarchy, more Brujah... if we're going to put Toreador anyway, put them in Salford, maybe a Toreador/Gangrel axis, that could be fun... Elysium in the Northern Quarter, there's places there that would be perfect... and obviously the more north you go the more Anarch things get as the money runs out..."

If you don't, here's a trick you can do. Point your web browser to snazzymaps.com. Select your preference of style (I like to use Dark and Red as filters, for obvious reasons, and "dango red" is my current favourite). Drag the view to your real-world city of choice and zoom out until you have the names of good-sized, famous districts visible. If you want a busier and more complicated city, zoom in a bit and get the smaller ones. You'll need an account to save, but nothing stops you taking screenshots...

Here are a couple of maps of Manchester: the wide zoom that includes some of the outer city, but not the real satellite towns like Sale or Altrincham, and the close in on the inner city which is where most of the action will probably be happening. I would of course crop these to hide the various UI greebles if I was using them in any sort of player facing resource, but that comes later.

That gives you your domains, which you can start populating with any SPCs you already have burning a hole in your brain. You can set markers at this stage, if you know where you want to put things, or you can do so in the later Relationship Mapping stage, or you can not bother and use a damn notebook (which, again, since I know Manchester fairly well - I lived there for two years and married a local - is probably how I'd go about things).

The old-school variation on this is acquiring an Eyewitness travel guide (the fat ones with the white covers) and using the chapters from that as domains. I like using Eyewitness because they're pretty exhaustive in terms of landmarks - gives you plenty of things you can navigate by and slip into descriptions, although it does give your game a slightly sightseer vibe.

For historical games, I like to dig up a historical map! There's not always one from exactly the right decade, but usually some from close enough that you can pinpoint landmarks around which a domain might centre and still achieve the right period vibe.

Anyway. However you've reached this point, this is where you start doing the Research, rounding out your initial enthusiasm for PCs and SPCs with historical conteeext! Vampire works really well as historical fiction in my experience - reality is deeper and gnarlier than anything you could make up and, quite often, you'll come across people and events and places that make you think "oh, this could be vampires."

I usually spend a couple of weeks on this. Just chipping away on different deep dives, different conflicts - politics, sport, universities, anything that exposes deep long term fault lines in the city's integrity, because that's where the monsters live and where their influence is felt. Once my head is creaking and my notes arranged along conflict lines... the Process can really begin.

Hi lovely can I ask your opinion on something? I know Louis is and will always be your number one, but why do you think that Harry sold the other boys out? Like didn’t he get upset just before Zayn was leaving the band from what that random who drank with him in a bar said that apparently they had some fight, Or do you think it was more calculated then just being upset that one of his close friends was leaving them all or was thinking of doing it and breaking the band up that he had been apart of for so many years or do you think he got very upset for other reasons like guilt and being afraid it would all come back on him due to him not wanting to sign contracts, what’s your thoughts?

I don’t think Harry’s leaving was in reaction to anything that happened in the band. It was mostly about becoming a superstar in his own right.

I think Irving Azoff, who knew Simon Cowell before One Direction, saw One Direction on X Factor, picked out Harry as a potential breakout star who could help launch Jeff Azoff’s “independent” management career, and offered to develop Harry into a mega star. This probably started around 2012. Through the subsequent years, Irving Azoff put the pieces in place with Fulwell (Corden, Turner brothers, Winston) and Rob Stringer at Columbia Records.

Irving Azoff used his connections in music (Ticketmaster, HDD, Pollstar, Live Nation, and many artists), entertainment (Kardashians, McCartney, Kanye, Chelsea Handler, Ellen), LA, NY (SNL, MSG), fashion (Conde Nast, Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber, Anna Wintour), Victoria’s Secret etc.) and cinema (where he doesn’t have as much sway) to build up young Harry. It’s hard to turn this down. Harry now is co-invested in a lot of Azoff businesses, including the Manchester Co-op and Pleasing, as well as probably part of Full Stop Management.

"The song originated in the emergency room, when we shock someone with electricity out of an arrhythmia. We're trying to restart the heart with medicine. That almost never works, so you have to switch to electricity.

Of course, it's all an allegory to engaging our feelings, our hearts, and the best of us in our life, how we do that, and with what interventions we wake ourselves up, and engage. That's countered with the theme of saying goodbye, and how powerful they are, when you say them for one last time. It's something you can't forget.

Essentially the book is about how so many people believe their jobs to be bullsh*t in that they offer no value to society and that their jobs basically shouldn’t exist. The lyrics are about how we / many of us / these people, recognize it as thoroughly depressing and that in many cases we can't really do anything about it."
