shuichi's fluff alphabet!

a - activities (what do they like to do with their s/o? how do they spend their free time with them?)

shuichi would enjoy calm, serene activities, like a walk through the park, on a beach, or sitting in the library. however, if you wanted to go somewhere rowdy, like an amusement park or concert, he would still enjoy it. honestly he would put up with nearly anything for you. if you're a rowdy person in general, he wouldn't mind you dragging him all over to do exciting things. in fact, he would find it refreshing!

as for everyday things, he prefers just being in your company. reading a book together, dining together, having deep conversations.

b - beauty (what do they admire about their s/o? what do they think is beautiful about them?)

for shuichi, appearance doesn't matter nearly as much as what's on the inside. that being said, he would admire the optimism in you, or your tenacity. he would appreciate an s/o who can be mature when needed, but also silly. shuichi just thinks your entire personality is beautiful, really.

although, he does love your eyes, too. he would stare into them as you're talking, making sure you know he is listening intently to whatever you're saying. he loves the way your face lights up when you smile or get excited. those are the things that he finds most beautiful about you.

c - comfort (how would they help their s/o when they feel down/have a panic attack?)

shuichi never really had to deal with something like this before, so he kind of just goes based off how he would want to be treated if he was in your place. at the first sign of your discomfort he will ask if you're okay. then he will ask if you need some space. if you say yes, he will leave, after assuring you that if you need something you can come get him anytime.

if you want him to stay, he will ask if you need a hug. he will wrap his arms around your shoulders and pull you close to his chest, resting his chin in top of your head. the one thing shuichi always wanted to hear was "everything will be okay," so he makes sure to tell you that as well. he hates to see you sad, but tries to act as calm as possible so his calmness will hopefully spread to you.

d - dreams (how do they picture their future with their s/o?)

he definitely sees you as a permanent person in his life, and he isn't too worried about where you will be in the future, since he mainly focuses on the present. however, sometimes he fantasizes about marrying you. he imagines what you would look like the moment he proposes, in your wedding dress, eating cake together.

if you dont want to get married, that's fine too! it has never been a huge goal or dream of his. plus, as long as you're together, marriage isn't too important. it's just a name change and a certificate, right? other than marriage, he does think about having children with you. he often wonders what they would look like, and how great of a parent you would be to them.

e - equal (are they the dominant one in the relationship, or rather passive?)

shuichi sees the two of you as completely equal. your thoughts and opinions are just as important, and he always makes sure to include them. he isn't a very dominant person in general, so he would either be passive or somewhere in the middle. he can be assertive when needed, though. shuichi won't let anyone be toxic toward him, including his s/o. but that would be the only time when he would assert himself over you. other than that, he would never allow himself to speak over you or act like he is the "better" person.

f - fight (would they be easy to forgive their s/o? how are they fighting)

if you were ever to fight with shuichi, it wouldn't be over a petty argument. in those situations he tries his best to listen and apologize, then do his best to fix it. however, if it's a really big fight, he has a bit more difficulty holding himself together. at first, he would cry a little bit. then he would get frustrated. though, he would never ever resort to violence with you. while he might say things he will regret, he tries his absolute hardest not to hurt you.

however, shuichi can and will stand up for himself if need be, he isn't a complete pushover. *little headcanon tangent here*: if you happen to be arguing and he spots toxicity or ab*sive behavior, he will call you out. he is working on self worth and knows what he deserves. good for him :)

g - gratitude (how grateful are they in general? are they aware of what their s/o is doing for them?)

shuichi sometimes gets caught up in his work and doesn't really see all the things you do for him. but when you're gone, he starts thinking about all the things you do. even small things, like bringing him tea when he is working, or dabbing his forehead with a wet cloth when he is sick. it is easy to not notice all the little things someone does for you, but shuichi is a thinker. if he realizes he maybe hasn't expressed his gratitude enough lately, he will immediately start giving back.

to express his gratitude, he will either tell you outright how thankful he is, or make a gesture. he will probably offer to do all your chores or treat you to dinner wherever you want. he makes sure to do this often so you never forget that he loves you and what you do for him.

h - honesty (do they have secrets they hide from their s/o? or do they share everything?)

there are only two types of things shuichi would hide from you. one would be some guilty pleasure of his that he has been made fun of for in the past. he tries hard to avoid the judgement of others, even his s/o. the other would be something he thought would potentially hurt you, or something unnecessary for you to know (i.e. he overheard someone talking behind your back). he doesn't like getting involved with drama if it doesn't concern him, and he doesn't want you to waste your time on those petty jerks. plus, he genuinely doesn't think it is something you would want or need to know.

other than that, he tries his hardest to tell you the truth all the time. he knows from firsthand experience how detrimental lying can be to a relationship, and he cherishes you way to much to jeopardize it.

i - inspiration (did their s/o change them somehow, or the other way around? like trying out new things or help them overcome personal problems?)

this one is a big yes! you gave shuichi a reason to make self improvements! before you came along, he didn't realize he had such room for change (the good kind). for example, shuichi didn't realize his self worth until you started expressing your love for him. he finally realized he needed to recognize his worth and what he deserves.

after you entered his life, he went around asking the smartest people he knew for advice on how to be his best self. he thought that if he was going to have someone important close to him then he needed to be at tip top shape for them. you're very special, so of course he would want to be the best partner he could be. his friends mostly told him to try to keep an open mind, listen to others, but most importantly to take time for himself. he took this advice wholeheartedly, not just for you, but also for himself.

j - jealousy (do they get jealous easily? how do they deal with it?)

it's perfectly normal for their to be a small amount of jealousy in a relationship. shuichi is human, of course he gets jealous sometimes. he tries to shove it down, which of course isn't very healthy. when he bottles too much up inside he tends to get a little cranky, and might hole himself up in his room. but he would never think about taking it out on you.

when he gets like this he attempts to calm himself down before expressing his thoughts to you about it. he'll do breathing exercises or drink some tea and read a book. it helps him a lot to be alone in a quiet environment in these times. once he is back to his usual self he will laugh it off with you.

k - kiss (are they a good kisser? what was the first kiss like?)

now, shuichi was definitely not a genius first time kisser. he just decided to go with what felt right. your first kiss probably took place after the two of you got together, maybe a few weeks or days into the relationship.

you were talking about something that you really enjoy, and as he watched your eyes light up with excitement as you talk about your favorite thing, he realized this is the moment when you're most beautiful to him. as soon as you finished talking he looked at you with a serious yet adoring face and asked if he could kiss you. when you said yes, he slowly leaned forward until your lips met. he wasn't really sure of what to do with his hands, so he just grabbed yours. when it was time for the kiss to escalate into something more, he listened to his gut. you were probably the one to initiate the makeout session by nibbling his lip. he was all for it of course, just a bit nervous.

now he is a natural! doesn't take him much thought what he does with his hands, lips or tongue. you are a very lucky person, s/o. ;)

l - love confession (how would they confess to their s/o?)

shuichi put a lot of thought into this. however, he didn't rely on his friends for this one. although he always goes to them for advice, he wanted this to be all him. he also didn't want to be embarrassed in front of everyone in case you said no.

the confession happened while the two of you were alone, either in the dining hall, library or outside. you weren't hanging out, you just happened to be in the same place at the same time. so he thought this would be a good opportunity. he cleared his throat, not to get your attention, but to try to avoid his throat closing up due to nervousness. he would then say something like:

"hey, y/n, i was hoping to talk to you about something." as soon as he got your full attention he would start rambling on about how he admires you. he would compliment your ultimate somewhere in there, before finally getting to his point. after clearing his throat again, he makes his best effort to look you in the eyes (though that is pretty difficult for him), and says it. "i like you, i think you're very sweet, and i want to get to know you more." when you told him the feeling is mutual he actually started freaking out internally. of course he tried to keep himself composed on the outside though. (babyyy ahhh)

m - marriage (do they want to get married? how do they propose? what would the marriage be like?)

he wants whatever you wants honestly. marriage isn't a need for him, but don't get me wrong he would absolutely love it too. anyway, the proposal would be fairly traditional. he would spend a great deal of time picking a ring, definitely worrying if you would like it. once he is sure he found the one, he would buy it and immediately start thinking about where to propose.

he would end up choosing a place that isn't too public but still somewhere significant to the both of you. he would definitely wear something nice too. it's kind of important to him that there aren't people around, because you know that can potentially cause problems. plus, this is a you and him thing, not for anyone else! finally, once you're alone in a quiet spot, he would get down on one knee. "s/o, you're the most important person in my life. you inspired me to become my best self. i am so ready to spend the rest of my life with you, devoting myself to you and only you."

domestic life with shuichi is amazing. you never really notice how different he acts around you versus others until you live together. you both balance chores, go together to get groceries, etc. somehow you make the boring and mundane more exciting :)

n - nicknames (what do they call their s/o?)

shuichi doesn't seem like one for pet names at first. further down the line, though, they would grow on him. he originally just called you by your name, or a shortened version of it. Then he started to use babe, honey, dear, because it seemed like you were enjoying it. his least favorite pet name for you is babe. he really likes sweetheart and love. overall, pet names aren't his sort of thing.

as for him, at first he would just like to have you call him saihara. now, he wouldn't admit it, but he goes really soft when you call him baby! if it's you, he will let you call him anything to be honest.

o - on cloud nine (what are they like when they are in love? is it obvious for others? how do they express their feelings?)

although he isn't one to brag about his s/o to others (in fact he actually prefers to be pretty private about his love life), it is quite obvious to everyone that he is in love. they can tell because he seems happier, and more talkative. miu even said that he is "glowing." :)

of course it's even easier to tell when he is with you. you can see his true feelings in his eyes when he is looking at you. you can feel his true feelings when he kisses your knuckles, when he leans his head on you. You can hear them when he expresses his love for you verbally every day. He expresses his love in many ways, even in small gestures that might be overlooked, like making an effort to not wake you up if he has to get up before you, or organizing your mess.

p - pda (are they upfront about their relationship? do they brag about their s/o to others? or are they rather shy to kiss etc. when others are watching?)

as i said before, shuichi isn't very comfortable being open about his relationship. the most he would do in public is hold hands or hug. he won't necessarily brag, but he will answer polite questions like "how are you and s/o doing?" with pride. he is definitely proud of you, even if he doesn't make a point of telling other people. he tells you, which is what is important.

q - quirk (some random ability they have that's beneficial in a relationship)

his ultimate! shuichi's talent as ultimate detective allows him to be very perceptive and smart, not to mention mature. this is good for relationships since he can tell when your behavior changes, which he can then ask you if something is wrong. his maturity and knowledge as a detective allows him to make rational decisions even under pressure, like if you're in a heated argument. he knows how to diffuse many different stressful situations because of his critical thinking skills.

r - romance (how romantic are they? what would they do to make their s/o happy? cliché or rather creative?)

shuichi isn't one for romance clichés, but he hasn't had much experience with this kind of thing, so that's what ends up happening anyway. other than the occasional bouquet of flowers, necklace (if you wear jewelry), or snacks, he doesn't give gifts much. he thinks love can't be bought with money or gifts (hear hear). of course he gets you gifts on anniversaries and birthdays and holidays, though.

s - support (are they helping their s/o achieve their goals? do they believe in them?)

of. course. he believes in you, and he is more than willing to help you achieve your goals, whether that be directly helping you with a task, or just giving advice. if he isn't tired or busy with work, he will do anything he can to help. shuichi is actually really invested in your goals. we all know he likes helping others, and he would most likely receive a sense of pride after seeing you accomplish something whether on your own or with his help.

t - thrill (do they need to try out new things to spice up your relationship? or do they prefer a certain routine?)

to an extent, shuichi really enjoys routine. but, like any person, he would get a little bored without occasional exposure to new things. he asks you to take him out to do something interesting at least once a month. his favorite new thing was going to a pottery store and learning how to make things out of clay. it was super satisfying to him to make something artistic. i might even say it was therapeutic for him. he also really enjoys going to art museums! this man has a natural affinity for art. it gives him a sense of serenity.

u - understanding (how good do they know their partner? are they empathetic?)

shuichi knows a heck of a lot about you, mainly because he loves listening to you talk about yourself. he often asks you questions so he can learn more, too. he genuinely doesn't mind it. he enjoys falling asleep to your voice as well! as for empathy, he tries his best to understand your feelings. he often asks himself how he would feel in your situation, and that helps him a lot with empathy.

v - value (how important is the relationship to them? what is its worth compared to other things in their life?)

shuichi knows well enough to put his own health, mental and physical, over anything else, even you. however, other than that, you're probably at the top. maybe even more so than some of his friends. he loves you and appreciates you very much! honestly, his life would be so different without you and he doesn't know what he would even do.

w - wild card (random fluff headcanon)

he likes to dabble with cooking (just imagine shuichi in an apron oh wowwww).

he is a bento box lover! he will often make you them with different ingredients each time to see what you like most, and just to experiment with flavors. he is really good at it too, everything he makes for you is homemade. he takes a lot of pride in it, especially when you enjoy them! (he would be overjoyed if you made him one so you could eat together. <3)

x - xoxo (are they very affectionate? do they love to kiss and cuddle?)

while shuichi isn't the most affectionate person ever, he does love it. when the two of you are alone he will often lean his head on your shoulder, grab your hand. if he is reeeally in the mood, he loves to make out with you. his touches are usually slow and sensual. he will hook his arm around your waist, lovingly caressing your body, or rub his thumb on the back of your hand. all of his affection is displayed thoughtfully and with care.

y - yearning (how will they cope when they're missing their partner?)

for the most part, shuichi likes alone time. but, if you're gone for a long period of time, he will get a bit grumpy. sometimes it will be noticeable, but not always. if he misses you that much, he will busy himself with a book, hangout with a friend, or just fantasize about you. whether he relives old memories or creates fake scenarios in his head, that is a great way for him to cope when you're gone.

z - zeal (are they willing to go to great lengths for the relationship? if so, what kind?)

if you were having any kind of relationship issues, shuichi would definitely try to salvage it. however, there is a certain extent to what he would do to save it. but don't worry, he doesn't give up easily. he will give your relationship what it needs to thrive. a break, space, communication. these are all important to him. of course he doesn't want to lose you. i see shuichi as someone who won't take any bullshit, either. he will try his best to fix it.

Salaam ukhti, I do not know what to do. I’ve been talking to a guy for a while now. My mother knows about him she’s happy for us to be wed. Alhamdulilah

So, this guy & I are from different cultures. I’m african he’s indian & I have no problem with that. In terms of his deen he’s perfect for me. The last step was for him to meet my father; I spoke to my father before they met told him he’s asian not african. He seemed completely okay with it at the time. Anyway, on the day he rang him and he hung up to call me. He said a lot of negative things I won’t repeat.

But, my issue is that he didn’t even try to meet him because of his ethnicity? The worse part is I have a strained relationship with him already (we don’t live together). So, the fact he couldn’t even meet a prospective guy for me his daughter his youngest child makes it worse.

Ever since then, we haven’t been speaking and he’s being really rude to me. Constantly making sly remarks about me because he asked what I did. I was angry because he knows he put me in a horrible situation. Since I had to go back to the guy to tell him my father couldn’t come because of an ‘emergency’.

My mother came up with the solution of her older brother going to meet the guy instead. To be honest, I understand why because my uncle speaks better english so they can communicate which I’m grateful for. But, it’s upsetting knowing my dad didn’t even try and I do not know if my uncle can even mehr me if my dad doesn’t say yes.

Assalamualaikum wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuhu dear sister, I hope you are feeling better by the time you are reading this.

Let me start by saying that your ask hit a not close to home for I can relate on some points. Allahu al'mustaān.

Now, before getting into the story, let me just answer your last question about whether your uncle (brother to your mom) could marry you, if your father doesn't cooperate. Well, I know I clarified in the bio and the opening post that this page doesn't give fatwahs but this is not a fatwah as the fatwah is already there and all over the internet , and it's ' common knowledge ' unfortunately no, the brother of the mother doesn't have the authority to marry the girl off in Islam. In fact, there is a sequence or list of ' wali-s ' who can marry her and in case the father wasn't capable of doing that, then it is the paternal grandfather, then the brother, then the half brother (from her father's side), then her father's brother, then her father's half-brother, then her paternal cousin (son of her father's brother), then son of her father's half-brother, then in case all of them are not available or they don't agree, then it's taken up to the Judge. See, there is no family member from the mother's side in that lineage. Just to be clear.

However, we should consider alllllll the other options that you have before thinking of the worst case scenario, sis. Because even if your father wasn't the greatest man and you don't have the strongest relationship with him, you don't want to start this important chapter of your life on the wrong foot, by upsetting him more, or ruining your chances to fix things with him. It will only complicate the situation more. And keep in mind: it is not permissible to get married without a wali, as prophet Muhammad ﷺ said : There is no marriage without the permission of a guardian.

Now let's see what we are dealing with, I don't know the reasons why your father is having this position - but one can only imagine.. However, Islam is innocent from all these ideologies, interracial and mixed marriage were never a problem in Islam and Allah swt and his Prophet ﷺ never forbid nor advised against marrying someone from a different ethnicity. In fact, the Prophet ﷺ said : "When someone whose religion and character you are pleased with proposes to (someone under the care) of one of you, then marry to him. If you do not do so, then there will be turmoil (Fitnah) in the land and abounding discord (Fasad)."

So, if the only reason why your father is not approving of this marriage is that the potential partner is from a different ethnicity, then your father is in the wrong and he will be accountable on his part. But there isn't much you can do without his approval. So what can you do instead? Is there any uncles from your father's side? A grandfather? An authoritarian family member? Or your local Imam or someone that your father actually values and listens to that you can actually talk to? To convince him to at least give the man a chance? And yes your uncle from your mother's side could talk to the guy and get to know him and maybe then he could tell your father about his qualities and how he is in shaa Allah a perfect fit for you, but again, he can't marry you off.

Now, I am sharing with you the feedback of a sister who is Alhamdulillah in a mixed marriage, she has been thru your experience and is now Alhamdulillah happily married, may Allah bless her and her family : "I understand her pain. They're judging him before even meeting him.. I don't know if there's much she can do tho. I think it's most likely that her father needs time to get used to the idea. He didn't expect her to marry out of the culture, that's a hard pill to slick for a lot of elder people. The advice I can give is to give it time and pray for it. Intercultural relationships is almost normal for our generation but it isn't for the generations before us. We have to keep that in consideration.

Also, if her uncle gets to meet the guy, maybe he can tell her father how great he is especially when it comes to deen. And her mother knows her father the best, she can eventually also speak in on his mindset and make him see that he's wrong to judge someone he hasn't even met.

I pray that her father 'wakes up' and realizes that culture doesn't matter. The only thing that will bring them to jannah, is their deen, and alhamdulillah he's perfect for her deen-wise. May Allah ease their affairs and bring them together in marriage. ❤️"

I will finish with this meaningful insight from islamqa.org "While family members may think they are acting in the best interest of their children, there are many cases in which the refusal of parents is based on incorrect presumptions and understandings that stem from their own, distinct experiences and contexts that their children may not necessarily share.

In such cases, if someone does believe they have genuinely found someone suitable for marriage, whether from a different race/culture or not, and their parents still prove to be difficult, they should try to convince them with wisdom and tact, and take all appropriate means to make them see the merits of the decision.

Parents certainly have a right to be concerned about the future of their children, but since it is not the parents entering into the marriage, children also need to make sure they are not being forced into decisions that will adversely effect them in the future."

And most importantly (from the same source) "You should know that marriages are destined by Allah, All-Wise. So if this marriage is facilitated for you, then it will happen, and if not, then it won’t. And in either case, there is wisdom behind this that you are not aware of, so you should pray salat al-istikharah for ease in this matter if it should be good for you. It is best that you take the path of benevolence and kindness in these kinds of issues and don’t rush things lest you aggravate the problems."

To conclude, my dear sister, I KNOW that when we are inn love/ or when we start getting attached to someone, we let our imagination run wild, we build hopes and dreams involving them, we want to be with them asap and we let ourselves get carried away, I know for a fact that you'd want to rush things and just get married to this guy and get it over with, I feel you, I relate to you, I understand you perfectly. But sometimes that's not how life works for a) there's Allah's timing for everything and b) there's Allah's plan for us. We think we are choosing and we think we are planning but it's just an illusion, at the end of the day it's only Allah's plan that works. That's why I pray that your choice matches what Allah swt has already chosen for you, and your plan confirms with Allah's plan for you. Please please please pray Istikhara times and times and times again, tell your guy to pray Istikhara as well, and sis, duāa is your only way out of this. Try to pray Tahajjud (night prayer) if you can, I heard a saying a while ago that anyone who has any need from Allah swt should never miss a Tahajjud prayer. In the quiet of the last third of the night, when everyone else is sleeping, just you and your broken words and you crying heart sincerely and humbling asking for Allah's help and guidance. It works miracles ✨

In shaa Allah kheir my dear, may Allah swt guide you, and bring what's kheir for you closer, and grant you what your heart is wishing for. May Allah swt have mercy on your heart and not allow it to be broken over this matter. Ameen. 🤍

Evelyn Covey had practically planned out her life for the next couple of years. Sure, she was just in seventh grade, but that meant she was close to highschool, which is close to college, which is close to the rest of her life, and soon enough she’ll be dead. Planning everything out in her life hadn’t been her first idea, but her mom and dad insisted she and Eric plan things out. After all, they were heirs to a pretty large fortune, they had to be careful what they did.

Basically, Evelyn planned to be head of the yearbook committee in middle school so she’d easily climb up the ladder in high school to be head by, at the earliest, sophomore year, then become head of the student council by at least junior year. Senior year would be more reasonable but, as her mother put it, “my children are exceptional, not reasonable”. She would also be head of the dance team and become a master of point ballet so she’d be several years ahead of her class by the time she gets into Julliard and before she knows it she’s Prima Ballerina just like her mother. Also, at some point soon she was supposed to start dating, but only rich boys that were approved of by her mother.

Along the way, she was supposed to make friends with powerful people’s children and use them to her advantage. For the most part, Evelyn was good at that, with a few exceptions (Odette Jefferson, for one). Evelyn had a pretty tight squad and was pretty well-liked, and she was even cool with Eric and his sporty guy friends who were supposed to help him with his future.

However, there was one friend that was completely unpredicted and probably a liability in the eyes of her mother, and her name was Hazel.

Evelyn had no idea what really drew her to Hazel. She was the cousin of one of her dad’s business partners (and a very powerful one at that, but for reasons beyond Evelyn’s knowledge, she and Eric weren’t close to) but she knew she definitely wasn’t rich like Selena. She was nervous and kinda dorky. She always wore a scrunchie with a messy curly ponytail. She was naturally beautiful, which was all the odder as Hazel didn’t even seem to notice it. In fact, Hazel seemed to always be hiding in a sweater of some sort. Needless to say, Hazel was nothing that Evelyn was used to. Maybe that was it...

She knew that her mom would probably not approve of their friendship, but after the fall formal dance, Evelyn found herself hanging out with Hazel more and more. They didn’t have the same lunch, but Evelyn would find her after school and they’d chat for a little bit, and Evelyn sat near Hazel whenever possible during science and PE. She knew it was suspicious, especially to her friends, but Hazel was just... enticing.

Her smile, her eyes, her laugh, the way she drummed her fingers on her desk when she was thinking, the way she would just ramble on and on until she caught herself... she was...

Evelyn thought Hazel was cute, but she didn’t admit that to herself often. It didn’t matter, she had ‘the plan’ to think about. Grades, friendships, eventual relationships, her whole future couldn’t fall apart because Evelyn thought maybe that one girl was kinda cute.

However, despite the little warning voice inside her head, she had invited Hazel and her cousin (Hazel never went anywhere without Selena) to her and Eric’s 13th birthday party. If anyone asked, Evelyn would say Selena was the daughter and future heiress of Louie Inc. and despite not being big in the social circles, she was still important and her cousin was just a tag along. Eric knew better, of course, but her friends (and more importantly, her mother) bought it.

Anyway, that was how she got to the present moment; at her house eating pizza with her group of friends- plus Eric and Selena- with Hazel in the corner on Evelyn’s window seat, reading something on her phone, and the rest of her friends gossiping and playing games while also posting to Duckigram.

“Enjoying the party?” Evelyn asked, taking a bite of her pizza.

“O-oh yeah! Totally!” Hazel blushed and laughed. “J-just a little tired is all.”

“I get it,” Evelyn gave her a smile, which seemed to relax her. “Selena’s kinda a natural, I didn’t expect her to click with all my friends that well, since she doesn’t really know them and all,” Evelyn commented.

“Oh yeah, she’s very amicable like that,” Hazel nodded. “She just chooses not to get involved in popularity contests- n- no offense or anything-!” Hazel bit her tongue.

“No, it’s cool, I get it,” Evelyn chuckled. “I get a little tired of it too sometimes, but I find my own ways to cope.” Hazel nodded in tired agreement.

“Here- you wanna go outside?” Evelyn stood and set down her plate on a nightstand.

“Y-you wanna leave the party?” Hazel glanced over at Evelyn’s friends.

“Psh, they’ll be fine. We’ll breathe just for a minute, it’ll be fun,” Evelyn offered her hand. When Hazel glanced at it, she realized how stupid the gesture was and was about to pull away when Hazel took it and Evelyn helped her up. The two snuck out of the room and eventually made their way to the balcony. The night air had done exactly what Evelyn had hoped, Hazel seeming to relax in an instant.

“This is pretty cool,” Hazel said, remarking on the fairy lights wrapping around the ledge, giving the balcony a nice soft glow.

“Thanks,” Evelyn said, going to the rail and leaning on it. Hazel joined her.

“You can practically see all of Duckburg from here,” She said, eyes shining like diamonds as she looked out.

“Yep yep,” Evelyn found herself lacking anything else to say, so she just took a deep breath.

“Are you okay?” Hazel asked, which made Evelyn blush a little.

“Yeah, I’m just a little more tired than I realized,” She chuckled.

“I feel you,” Hazel nodded.

“You know, I think you should consider yourself lucky that you weren’t born into all this. There’s so much politics involved in every single friendship and party, it’s honestly one big headache,” Evelyn rubbed her arms and leaned more on the ledge. “I can’t even count the number of times I’ve just sat and wondered what the heck I’ve ever done to get as far as I’ve gotten... It’s hard to tell what’s real and what isn’t.”

“W-well I’m sure it’s not all bad. I mean, you do have a lot of friends. That’s nice,” Hazel said.

“It’s hard to tell if they’re genuine or not though. A lot of my friends were simply formed because of our parents,” Evelyn said. “Not you though! You’re a lot different than most of my friends.”

“What do you mean?” Hazel questioned.

“Not in a bad way-! I-i mean... you’re actually pretty cool. I choose you to be my friend, you know?” Evelyn cursed internally. Hazel smiled a little.

“T-thanks. You’re pretty cool too,” Hazel said. Evelyn felt her heart give a flutter.

“Thanks,” She smiled. They looked at each other for quite the moment, before returning their gaze to the city. Evelyn took a sip of her soda.

“You know... you’re really pretty. Have you ever been told that?” Evelyn asked, realizing it was a pretty stupid question to ask someone only after she said it.

“I mean- outside of my dad and great aunt and uncle and Selena? No, not really,” She said, scratching the back of her neck.

“It’s true, you’re really... really pretty,” Evelyn glanced at Hazel, but their eyes met, and they went back.

“Thanks,” Hazel smiled more. “You’re really pretty too.”

Evelyn felt her heart do a summersault.

“Th-thanks,” She said, turning her face away as she felt herself become a blushing mess.

There was a moment of silence between the two, minus the ambiance of the night and the background music of the party not too far away. However, it wasn’t unbearable, in fact, it was relaxing. Just two girls enjoying each other's company on a cool Friday night...

“Evelyn..?” Hazel asked.

“Yes?” Evelyn responded, turning to her.

“Y-you don’t... I-i mean... Do you...? I-...” Hazel couldn’t get the words out.

“What do you mean?” Evelyn tilted her head a little. Hazel glanced at her before shaking her head.

“N-nevermind. Forget I asked anything,” Hazel shook her head. Evelyn decided it was probably best she didn’t push and left it at that, taking another sip of her soda.

“You know... I’ve never really been to a birthday party outside of my family,” Hazel said.

“Oh?” Evelyn said.

“Yeah... and I know that sounds a little stupid, but... I’m not the best at making friends... so... I just want you to know... I appreciate you. A lot,” Hazel said, facing Evelyn.

“I appreciate you too Hazel,” Evelyn said, suddenly aware of how close they were. She looked into Hazel’s eyes and Hazel looked right back.

“Y-yeah... I get really shy and quiet around people, a-and you’ve really helped me reach out and grow, even if it’s j-just a little. I never would’ve dreamed of this last year,” Hazel said, leaning in a little.

“You’re really cool Hazel, I’m lucky to know you,” Evelyn replied. Hazel blushed a little.

Just then, Evelyn closed her eyes, leaned in, and kissed her.

To her surprise, it felt good. Really good. It was better than any kiss Evelyn had ever had before. Those countless dares she had taken with her friends were nothing compared to this.

However, right after the moment passed, both girl’s eyes snapped right open, and they jumped away from each other in shock.

“H-hazel- I-”

“Hey, Evelyn, where’ve you- oh hey Hazel. What’s going on here?” Eric appeared on the balcony door right on time. Hazel turned away.

“Nothing much,” Evelyn cleared her throat to quickly get a grip on herself, though her heart was pounding a thousand miles a minute. “We were just about to head back, right?” she said, turning to Hazel.

“Y-yeah,” Hazel said, still not able to look at her. Evelyn’s smile fell.

‘Great job Evelyn, you just screwed up the best friendship you’ve ever had,’ Evelyn facepalmed internally. Silently, the three of them went back to the party and Evelyn did her best to act like it didn’t happen.

It wasn’t easy though, as a voice in the back of her mind kept screaming at her.

‘You’re such an idiot. Hazel doesn’t like you like that! Now she hates you.’

‘You can’t like Hazel, this isn’t with the plan. Mom will totally kill you.’

‘What the hell is wrong with you?! Who kisses a person they barely know?’

‘You can’t risk your future like this.’

‘None of your friends would approve.’

‘How do you even know what love is? You’re thirteen. You can’t like someone like that, especially a girl.’

‘Mom is gonna kill you.’

‘That was a mistake.’

‘You’re such an idiot.’

Evelyn wished she could just turn her brain off.

Eventually, Hazel asked if she and Selena could leave. Evelyn managed a nod, expecting that. They left not long after that, and it was safe to say the rest of the party felt like a waste. Evelyn’s mind was eating itself alive and she wished she could take back the whole thing.

But Evelyn knew she couldn’t. Sooner or later... this was going to have to address itself again. The thought wasn’t comforting; it only got her thinking about how her friends and family would react, which filled her soul with dread.

So for the present moment, it was a lot easier to deny the truth. She just... couldn’t risk what she had built; what she was going to build. She had her whole future, she couldn’t just... drive it all off the rails. Not right now.

She was just confused... there wasn’t anything really there. And even if there were, it couldn’t be worth it... right?

Evelyn took out her phone and gave Hazel a quick text.

“I’m sorry for everything” and sighed. She hadn’t meant to screw this up so badly...

Hazel read the text but didn’t respond.

Evelyn pressed the phone against her forehead, cursing herself for being an idiot.

Evelyn added: “We can pretend it never happened if you want”

Hazel started to type, but after a long moment, stopped. Eventually, she gave the message a thumbs up. Evelyn groaned internally. She hated this, she never wanted to make Hazel feel bad, and yet... she sighed.

Then again... maybe it’d be easier this way. Evelyn could just move on and pretend it never happened. Their regular old friendship would return in no time and everything would be fine and as planned. Evelyn would just play the part she was always meant to, and she’d move on and everything would just be okay. After all, she was only 13, none of this meant anything.

“Evelyn, you good?” Eric asked, noticing her worried looks. Evelyn glanced around to see if anyone was paying attention to her, which no one was.

“I screwed up,” she sighed. “But I’ll fix it, it’ll be fine... it has to be,” she muttered the last part under her breath. Eric gave her a sympathetic look but didn’t push further than that, which was good. Evelyn wasn’t sure how well she’d be able to hide this from him. He was her twin after all.

That didn’t change anything though. This whole... Hazel thing was against the plan, so Evelyn would just pretend it never happened, keep being her friend and move on.

She had to.

Jaycee.

Jaycee had take five tests so far and went to the drugstore to to buy five more on her way to Landons house. Elle was at school so they’d have time to discuss this and figure things out. Jaycee loved Landon to pieces and he has been the best friend a girl could dream of. Picking on one another with mean come backs, with nothing but love for one another behind the remarks. Truth is, she’d take a bullet for Landon and Elle, and the fact that she was pregnant with someone she cared for and knew was a great dad. It comforted her, even though her nerves were a mess as she knocked on his door. Why didn’t she think it was weird she hasn’t had her period in four months, and her boobs have plumped up more than than usual. With her water bottle she walked in and grabbed Landons hand, her cheeks flushed from the cold air outside. “Landon, I’m sorry to rush over here. I just. I really really need to talk to you..” she turned around and the see through grocery bag showed the test, and a urine specimen cup to use the tests in. It was visible she was nervous and scared, as she furrowed her brow trying to read him. “I um.. Can we go to your bathroom?” She needed to sit down and talk but she’d drank so much water to retest for him, she was about to burst. Besides, they’ve both seen one another naked multiple times from the show they were on to recently a few months back.

LANDON

One of the benefits of being a journalist was the opportunity to work from home. It made things easier back when Elle wasn’t going to school yet and the habit stuck around, even once his daughter got older. He was much more likely to get some work done in the comfort of his own home with no one around to distract him than he was at the office. A knock at the door brought him out of his working zone and he got up with a sigh. When he saw Jaycee on the other side of the door, his confusion only grew. His friend knew that he usually spent the time Elle was at school working and didn’t interrupt him so the fact that she was here right now, looking frazzled...it worried him. “What’s going o-“ His words cut off when he noticed what was in her grocery bag. Those were pregnancy tests. Landon felt his stomach drop to his feet and he stared at Jaycee with wide eyes. She didn’t even need to say anything for him to come to his own conclusions because why else would she come to his place with pregnancy tests? In a daze, he followed Jaycee to his he bathroom, feeling completely caught off guard. When he saw her take one of the tests out of the bag, Landon finally managed to get his mouth working again. “You’re pregnant?”

Jaycee.

Jaycee couldn’t hold it, and nodded for him to follow her to the bathroom. Deciding the leave the door open so he could talk and watch her do the tests correctly. “I have taken fivw tests already that say I am pregnant, and I have five more to double check. Landon I don’t get it..” after collecting a sample to dip the tests in, she cleaned herself up then washed her hands. It wasn’t that she’d think Landon wouldn’t believe her, she herself didn’t believe it. It has to be fluke or something. “And I’m pretty sure when we got snowed in is when we got pregnant.” She licked her lips, it was obvious she was scared and nervous of just telling him. Walking towards his bathroom, sitting down as soon as she pulled her pants down. Grabbing the cup to capture what she needed for the other tests as well and finished cleaning up. Standing with her hands on the counter as she took in a deep slow breath through her nostrils, taking the tests she divided them up to be opened by them both. Jay laid the dipped tests on its box. “I want to keep this baby, are you okay with that.?” She asked him with panicked eyes, trying to stay strong.

LANDON

Landon knew that the next tests Jaycee was planning on taking would only confirm what the others said. With five tests saying that his friend was pregnant, how could it be a false positive? It was pretty much impossible but he also knew that wasn't the right thing to say right now, not when Jaycee looked so nervous already. This was pretty similar to what he'd gone through with his sister six years ago. The disbelief that this could actually happen and the fear over what it would mean. Only this time he was the father and not just a concerned brother. Jaycee also wasn't the only one in disbelief. How could he have let this happen? Whenever someone asked him if he was planning on having more children his answer was always the same. Maybe in the future. Landon still remembered the conversation he had with Alison when she was thinking of giving Des a little sibling. He understood the reasoning behind it but he wasn't ready. For six years, he raised Elle on his own. He had help from his family and friends but it was different than having a partner to share the experience with. Landon always said that the next time he did it, it would be with someone he was in love with and wanted to spend his life with. And most importantly planned. And now here they are. He shook himself out of his thoughts at Jaycee's question and nodded. Having adopted his sister's baby, there was no way that he was going to be against keeping his own. "Of course I'm okay with that, and I'm going to be involved and present. I promise."

Jaycee.

Her hip rested against the sink countertop, with her arms crossed under her newly swollen chest. Should have been her first sign because she’s never been big up top. “I know you will, and knew you would. You’re a great father and I know this baby wasn’t planned. But he or she never could be a mistake. I was told it’s probably be impossible to be a mom, and you know it’s something that bothered me..” picking at her full bottom lip as her eyes showing how she zoned out, knowing and feeling he’ll be someone co parenting could be so easy with. “I’m just thankful it’s yours, and someone I trust. And you know I’m going to always love Elle as mine as well. And she can still come stay over to visit with her brother or sister while it’s my time. I would encourage it.. I’m rambling cause I’m so nervous, holy shit Lan..” she cupped her hands over her nose and mouth as she softly cried. “What if I’m horrible like my mom with my own child.. Don’t let me be my mom, please..” she shrugged softly and opened her arms needing to be held and he could probably use some comfort as well. “I have an appointment later today if you want to go. I’m okay with Elle go if you’re okay with it. They’ll be doing an ultrasound.. And hearing the heartbeat.” Her voice chokes up a bit at the thought of hearing something she prayed to one day hear.

LANDON

Even though this was very unexpected and not exactly what Landon had planned for the moment, he would never even think about referring to his child as a mistake. He was just grateful that at least it was with Jaycee. They might not be together like that, especially after he came out as gay, but they did love each other. She was always there for him, whether that was a shoulder to cry on or someone to help him with Elle. And he knew for a fact that she would be a great mother who would love their child unconditionally. Landon was quick to pull Jaycee in for a hug when she started crying, murmuring comforting words in her ear. “You could never be a horrible mum Jay, no way. You treat Elle like your own and you know she loves her cool aunt to pieces. This is something you’ve always wanted but thought you couldn’t have...this baby is going to be so loved and you’re going to be a great mum.” What he was saying was also a way of comforting himself. He went from planning on going back to college for his masters to finding out he was going to be a dad again. It wasn’t something easy to wrap his head around. “I’ll be there”, he reassured. “But I’ll try and find someone to look after Elle while we’re there. I need to wrap my head around it myself before I tell her about it. And you know that once Elle finds out she’s going to be a big sister she won’t keep the secret for very long.”

Jaycee.

Jaycee wanted to comfort him as well, knowing he had to be feeling some form of panic. Using her hands to rub his back, while she looked down at the tests that were all boldly positive. “Thank you, that means a lot. And you know if you still want to get your masters then go for it. I got Elle when you need me to.” Jaycee would have offered that regardless, because she loves that little girl to pieces. Laughing softly at agreeing needing to wrap their heads around the news. “I still can’t believe I’m pregnant.” Her eyes shined a bit from when she was crying, but she was beaming with a bright smile. “Well I guess after the appointment we can discuss different announcement looks. If you want to stay ahead of Miss Elle.” Smirking until her stomach growled causing her to laugh. “I can’t wait to eat after my appointment. I have to fast for blood work.” Scrunching her freckled nose as she playfully pouted.

LANDON

Landon knew that he could count on Jaycee to have his back, just like he would always have her back. She was being serious when she offered him to look after both Elle and the baby so he could get his masters done like he planned before all this happened. He just wasn’t sure he could do it now. When Elle was a baby and during the first years of her life before starting school, Landon was always around. He was present for all the big accomplishments like her first word and her first step. There was nothing he feared more than the baby not getting the same attention from him that Elle got. What if he was at a lecture that he couldn’t get out of while his child was learning how to walk? No, he would hate himself forever if that were to happen but he also didn’t want to make Jaycee feel guilty so he just smiled. “You’re the best, thank you.” Landon wasn’t expecting his day to turn into such a rollercoaster of emotions and it was finally setting in...he was going to be a dad again. Talk of announcements brought Landon out of his reverie. Shit. He was going to have to tell Roman and Aaron about this. They didn’t deserve to find out from some announcement on social media. After the appointment I promise to take you to McDonald’s or something”, he chuckled, hearing the way her stomach was growling.

Jaycee.

Leaning against the sink counter she just dazed out looking at the test, then down at her flat stomach. Brows furrowed as she thought how this was going to go, praying she didn’t disappoint herself or Landon in being a mother. Turning to her side she raised her sweater that was baggy over her plum colored yoga pants, looking from the mirror to her stomach and yeah she was bloating but she thought it was going to be a painful period. Tiniest little bump was evident but only if you really knew how small Jaycee was. “Hey I’ll take McDonald’s. Chocolate shake sounds really good right now.” She spoke while she dropped her sweater, blushing a bit. Probably looking like a weirdo looking at her stomach, or thinking she’ll freak out over gaining weight. And to be honest she was a little, but she’s stronger and would never ruin a chance to be a mom. “Are you okay?” She asked him in a soft tone, knowing she just fastened a seatbelt to a crazy ride for him. “I know it’s a lot.. I am still not sure if it’s true and probably won’t until the doctors appointment.” She pulled the ends of her sweater to bunch them up into her fisted hands as she laughed softly.

LANDON

Landon looked on as his friend lifted her sweater and looked down at her stomach. This might not be the first time Landon found himself about to raise a child, but it was a completely different situation then it was with Elle. With Elle it was a completely different experience because his sister was the one who was pregnant and she never showed any interest in being the one to raise her. As much as he loves his sister, Landon never quite managed to figure out how she kept herself so detached from the situation and from the baby growing inside her. Once Elle was born, his sister signed over her custody to him and took on the role of fun aunt without a second thought. It wasn’t going to be the same this time as Jaycee was obviously going to be a very big part and it left Landon wondering about what he should be doing. Was he supposed to act like a doting father to me to his partner even though he and Jaycee weren’t together? Hopefully he would get more than enough time to come to figure it out and get used to the idea. “Yeah I’m fine. It’s just...quite a situation and unexpected. This isn’t how I thought I’d have my second child but it is what it is.” He knew the chances that more than five pregnancy tests were wrong were slim but he didn’t say anything. If that thought reassured Jaycee, then he wasn’t about to ruin it.

Jaycee.

”It’s not how I’d picture having my first child. Neither of us planned this, and some how or some way we will figure it out. We’re friends before anything and Elle and this Baby comes first.” She didn’t know what to expect, but she was definitely trying to hide she was upset. Holy hormones! Walking out of the bathroom after she cleaned up the mess she had made. Disinfecting the counter top was the least she could do, for getting upset and causing a scene. Uncrossing her arms from under her chest she held her hands up and looked up at him. “I’m sorry, that’s now the right way to speak to you. I don’t doubt you want to be in this babies life, and I know you’d want to be part of everything. So if you want to discuss living arrangements we can. I’d have my own room of course, and we can decorate both nurseries. Yours first, like I said earlier. I’m just repeating myself, yeah?” She pressed two fingers to each temple and massaged. “I just believe you and I could make this work. I don’t expect you to want to be with me just because. And I trust you’re not going to bring just anyone into our child’s life, unless you trusted them. Because I’ve seen you with Elle, so in a way maybe it was meant to happen this way. I can’t think of my baby as a mistake.. I know that much..” she laughed softly, before placing her hand to her neck to massage it. Her other hand going to her mouth as she yawned. “Sorry, I’m just so tired. I think I’m going to take a vacation as we figure things out, and my body adjusts to these hormones.”

LANDON

Landon wasn’t sure what he said to upset Jaycee. He was supportive and had every intention of helping raise this baby, but he didn’t think he could be blamed for being shocked. It’s not like they planned this and now all of a sudden he found himself about to become a dad again. He was caught off guard but Landon also knew that saying all that would just make things worse if his friend was already upset with him. So while he would usually argue at being talked to like that, he knew that keeping calm was key right now so he just tried his best to smile. “Exactly, Elle and the baby come first. I’m glad we’re in agreement.” If there was something he wouldn’t settle for was for his daughter to be made to feel like lesser to the baby but he knew that Jaycee would never do that. She loved Elle too much. “We will make this work and I’m going to be with you every step of the way. And you know that I don’t bring just anyone around Elle so I’ll do the same with our baby. I never said this baby was a mistake Jay, no child of mine could ever be a mistake. All I said was that it was unexpected and you can’t really tell me it wasn’t. That doesn’t mean I’m...upset about it, or anything like that.” Landon wished there was something he could say that would help the girl feel a little better about it all, but he wasn’t sure what that was. “We’re going to be okay...I promise.”

Jaycee.

Hearing him out and speaking she felt like such an ass, Landon of all people. Someone she’s known for years and knew very well would never feel how her fears were screaming at her. Sitting on the end of his bed she sighed softly, before catching herself yawn. Placing her hands to her face as she shook her head, apologizing. “Lan..” she looked up at him with pure apologetic eyes, tears threatening to fall. “I’m so sorry if I was mean, holy shit what was that?” She gasped with her hand on her chest, trying to calm herself down a bit. Taking in slow breaths, before exhaling slower to relax her anxiety of the day. “I know all of that and I know you know Elle is just as equal to me. I think I just panicked and wanted you to know everything.” Two single tears fell from each eye as she sniffled a bit, while she looked down at her hands bunched up in her oversized sweater. “You know know..” she looked up smiling softly. “Elle is going to be the best big sister there is..” she imagined her excitement in wanting to hold her sibling for the first time, was something she’d be sure to catch not only for Landon but it’s a memory she wants for herself too. Using her sweater as she cleared her face up, she walked up to her friend and just hugged him. She needed it and she trusted his promises. “Did you know morning sickness is NOT morning sickness? I’d like to slap whoever came up with that term.” She tried to joke as she looked up at her sweet friend, now father of their child. Together, their family will no doubt be filled with laughter and fun. “I am hoping peppermint yeah I got will help, but then I get such heartburn after drinking it.” She laughed softly.

LANDON

Landon didn’t hold it personally. When his sister was pregnant with Elle, he lost count of how many times she was close to snapping his head off over an innocent comment he made which she took personally. It was all part of the experience and the joys of being around a pregnant woman. Not that he was about to tell Jaycee that, he valued his life thank you very much. So he just smiled and shrugged good naturedly, which only turned more sympathetic when he noticed that she was crying. “Hey, it’s okay”, he mumbled, squeezing her comfortingly. “I’ve got thick skin and I know better than to get insulted over something like that.” If there was one thing he was grateful for, it was that he wouldn’t have to ever experience morning sickness himself. It was no secret that the name was very misleading and it wasn’t only experienced in the morning. “My sister used to swear by ginger tea and saltines. If you’re lucky, it might even help you avoid getting heartburn. Although I wouldn’t blame you if you don’t want to try, ginger tea’s disgusting.”

Jaycee.

Nodding her head, sniffling as he assured her it was okay. “I just, I wouldn’t ever talk to you like that. I know we’re both mentally freaking out and that’s okay..” Jay scrunched her nose at the idea of ginger tea, but she’d try anything natural and safe. It was dangerous to have morning sickness so much. Not only for her and the baby, but her past as well. Thankfully she’s strong and has a powerful group surrounding her, reminding her they’re her family. “I will give any a try, maybe pick some up after the appointment?” She asked with a soft tone,smiling. Reaching for her pink water bottle the entire dance crew had, she took a sip of water. Drinking her water as if she’d been dying of thirst, without being messy. “I swear I go through double waters bottles a day now.” She laughed softly, trying to stay hydrated with morning sickness was important and she’s always been self conscious of what she puts in her body. “You know I have nausea meds from when I.. well you know the past. And Google says they’re safe. But, this might be the only child I ever get a chance to carry and I’m just so protective already. Besides I’d want your opinion on anything like that too.” She spoke with her hands, her phone went off and she saw it was and email making her smile. She opened it and saw the head shots for the girls came in and showed him. “Those two are going to keep us all stressed. They’re so precious.” She leans in to look at them again. “Elle and Destiny’s head shots will be the models of dance for the studio. So when you walk in there’s my girls.” Her eyes lit up as she spoke about the girls and the dance academy.

LANDON

“It’s okay, really...I know it’s a stressful time for both of us.” Landon wasn’t about to take it personally. This was a shock for both of them but he couldn’t even begin to imagine what it was like for Jaycee, finding yourself pregnant after being sure that wouldn’t ever happen for you...that wasn’t something Landon could ever relate to. So he was going to do anything he could to help out and make the experience a little more bearable, even if it meant buying shitty ginger tea that was never ever going to drink himself and keeping it in his cupboard. He could understand her feeling of protectiveness towards the baby. Having just found out about the baby’s existence, he already felt like he loved them so he couldn’t even imagine what it felt like for Jaycee. But he wasn’t about to force his friend to feel like shit over an opinion that he wasn’t really entitled to anyways. After all, he wasn’t the one suffering from constant nausea. “Maybe check with the doctor while we’re at the appointment to make sure? If you get their go ahead then I don’t see why you shouldn’t take them, especially if they help you out”, he reasoned. Landon looked at the photos on Jaycee’s phone, a fond smile on his face. He loved those two girls with all his heart and it was heartwarming to see Jaycee love them just as much. This is what he meant when he said his friends in Kingsboro were like his family. “They’re going to get really big heads if you keep spoiling them like that.” The smile on his face made it obvious he was only teasing though.

Jaycee.

Leaning her head against his shoulder, instant calm at how assuring he was. He always calmed her nerves in the craziest of situations. She was so nervous joining the show with him and Aaron but Landon was just so easy to get along with, with her at least. Anyone was to say otherwise she’d ask them what they did, no Landon. “Yeah I’ll ask the doctor, cause I’m scared I’d the ginger tea tastes as bad as you say it does. It won’t help me.” She giggled softly as she saw his face light up looking at the girls, those two ruled their world and they knew it. “They already know they control our lives, and we just added to it.” She bumped his shoulder playfully, before putting her phone in her back pocket. “I just want them to always be confident in themselves, not just their beauty. So I was adamant on them shooting while doing their leaps and warm ups. Of course they had to be little divas. But those head shots are basically for you and Landon. I’m just proud.” She smirked, shrugging her shoulders. Placing the flat of her hand her upper stomach as she felt a cold flush run over her, then got really hot. Holding her other hand to her mouth she walked fast to the bathroom and rushed before she threw up on his floor. Her long hair to the side, hoping none got in the toilet, (thankfully none did cause ew) she flushed it and rested her cheek on the cold porcelain and closed her eyes. “I’m surprised I lasted as long as I did before that happened..” she tried to joke, but wasn’t completely sure if she wasn’t going to sick again.

————Time Skip ————

Jaycee.

After being woken up at 3 am with her water breaking. She was so scared but Landon had been the best coach she could have ever asked for. From feeding her ice chips, to using a cool washcloth on her forehead to keep her cool. When they got there she was dilated to a five and they gave her an epidural as soon as she was in their room. It was going so fast she never let go of his hand until they were able to sleep for a few hours before it was time to push. And it was as if it all was a blur once they placed their son on her chest, Jaycee looked up at Landon crying in a sweaty tired mess. “He’s here.. he’s so beautiful.. Hey so you’re the little dude that kicked all the time” she leaned her head against Landons smiling, but tired from all the pushing. They took him to weigh him and make sure he was all good before handing him to Landon, bundled up. It was a moment she’ll never forget, watch him take in his son. “He looks so much like you.” She was still a crying mess, but she laughed. The baby wrapping his tiny hand around Landons finger, as he pouted a bit.

LANDON

It was almost like time stopped having any meaning from the moment he got the text from Jaycee at 3am, who he thought was sleeping in the other room, to tell him her waters broke. From getting dressed, to texting everyone that the baby was coming so Elle wouldn’t be left sleeping on her own, it wasn’t hard to believe that he completely lost track of time. The benefit of having to drive to the hospital so early in the morning was that the usual Kingsboro traffic was pretty much non-existent and pretty soon they were being admitted to their private room. With Jaycee being dilated to five, Landon encouraged her to get some sleep after the epidural was administered. It was going to be a very tiring process and his friend needed all the sleep she could get. The plan wasn’t for him to fall asleep as well, sitting in the chair next to the bed and holding Jaycee’s hand but having not gotten any sleep at all before getting the girl’s text, and rushing around to get everything for the unexpected labour, maybe it wasn’t that surprising that he ended up drifting off for a few hours as well. Landon tried his best to be supportive to Jaycee throughout the labour. He fed her ice chips to make sure she didn’t get dehydrated and cooled her face down with a washcloth every time it seemed like it was getting to be too much. The situation was completely different than when his sister gave birth to Elle but one thing that was exactly the same was the helplessness he felt at seeing someone he cared about going through so much pain in order to bring to life his child. All he could do was to be a supportive and encouraging presence for Jaycee. The emotions that went through him as soon as his son was born and placed on Jaycee’s chest was indescribable. That was his boy. His son. It was both surreal and one of the most beautiful moments of his life. “Look at him”, he whispered, in awe at the sight in front of him.

One of his biggest worries after finding out about Jaycee’s pregnancy was that he would never be able to love his son as much as he loved Elle. How was it possible, when Elle was his whole world and had been for six years? It seemed impossible to think that he could hold so much love in his heart. It wasn’t something he ever told Jaycee because he didn’t want to worry her and was glad he didn’t. Because the moment the nurse handed him his son to hold, all bundled up and a small finger wrapped around his, Landon was hooked. It’s true what people say, the moment another child is born your heart grows a little more to make space for another. His baby was barely a few minutes long and Landon already felt like he would do anything for him. “Hey Baby S”, he cooed, tears streaming down his face and yet still able to make reference to the joke him and Jaycee had going on. He walked closer to the bed and sat down so that Jaycee would be able to get a closer look at their son. “Look angel, that’s mummy.”

Jaycee.

Look at him, and the way he just kept looking at his dad was enough to bring more tears. Jay was exhausted and honestly wouldn’t have made it through without how he comforted her. After they got her fixed up and comfortably resting on an ice pack, thankful that she was still numb. The doctor congratulated Landon and handed him a pack of cigars, as they let them know the lactation nurse would be in soon. Scooting over so he could sit better the best she could. “Hey my sweet little miracle, look at you.” She cooed, sniffling. The moment he was on her chest, Jaycee was so helplessly in love with their son. Looking into Landons eyes, both of them a teary mess, her chin trembled. “Thank you for giving me the best gift there is.” Her voice broke, her eyes filled with so much love and joy. Watching her best friend hold their son was something else. Jaycees eyes were heavy as the days of not sleeping weighed on her, but she was trying so hard to fight it. “I can’t stop staring at him, he’s.. Perfect. Our little Easter Bunny.” She ran the tip of her pointer finger over his nose. “He is definitely playing by his own rules, already.” She joked sleepily as the lactation nurse came in, and helped Jaycee learn how to hold him right and he latched right away. The nurse gushing how amazing he was doing and that she wasn’t even needed. Of course Jaycees heart swelled when she said that, but she just watched him in awe. Bonding even more over feeding him, gently caressing his head. “I love you so much, every breath I take is for you. I will love you beyond my last breath.” Tears still flowing, as she laughed a bit. Still in awe and shock he was in her arms, nursing. Once he was done and she was able to burp him, handing him back to his daddy. “You ready to go see daddy again, I know he can’t get enough of you either.” She felt so happy and drowsy. “If I fall asleep I’m sorry in advance.” She joked knowing better.

LANDON

This was one of the most emotional moments of Landon’s life so he couldn’t even begin to imagine what it felt like for Jaycee. His friend thought she’d never get to have something like this and now here they were, looking down at their son. Jaycee was right in calling him their little miracle. “Thank you”, he said, voice breaking as he got emotional again. If someone had told him a year ago that he would be here, looking at his son with Jaycee right there with him, he would have laughed. Now he couldn’t imagine his life any other way. Landon watched with a fond smile as Jaycee fed their son and then took him back in his arms once he was done. “I can’t believe you’re even apologising. You literally just gave birth Jay, I’d be worried if you weren’t sleeping”, he said, although his eyes barely left their baby’s face. “Get some sleep love, we’ll be right here when you wake up.”

Jaycee.

Jaycee couldn’t say anything when he thanked her back, all she could do was nod as she choked up. The baby was making the cutest noises as he stretched and yawned. “I think he thinks it’s nap time too, look at you taking all the credit.” She joked, leaning over to kiss their son on his head, as a tear slid down her cheek. “You should get some sleep too, lord knows I’m not big enough for this bed to take it all up. If you decide to chill with him in your arms and watch tv you won’t bother me.” She a assured him, turning on her side to face them but giving him enough room to be able to lay on his side or back. Not even remembering when she fell asleep for a good four hours before she popped her eyes opened, looking around. And smiled when she saw the baby resting on Landons chest and they’re out. The nurse came to check on her and the baby quietly helping her to the bathroom. About 30 minutes passes when she emerges showered in her nursing gown she got with its matching floral robe, and fluffy slippers, feeling more alert and fresh. Gently crawling into the bed, wincing a bit.

aries: mercury retrograde happens in your 12th house so be *very* careful about that old “self-undoing” thing - no alcohol, drugs, or unhealthy coping mechanisms if you can help it. at all. the mars square with chiron (your ruler, square a planet in your sign) should also be taken seriously in tandem with that retrograde, because chiron is often associated with wounds. that 12th house is sometimes considered to ruler hospitals. do the math!

taurus: you can watch your social networks and your friend groups re the mercury retrograde but if you ask me your real concerns right now are squares - look for tension in intimate relationships, self-image issues, and sudden shocks or changes that you missed the omens for and that seem, at least for now, less than totally pleasant. handle them with all the grace you can muster so you can use them to your benefit later.

gemini: of course, mercury going retrograde is never a reason you ought to panic, but it *is* your ruler and therefore it is very worth noting. this one occurs in your 10th house, concerning your social status, and perhaps your lasting legacy. all standard mercury retrograde protocol also should apply! hopefully you’ve been preparing during the shadow phase.

cancer: the movements in pisces generally are favorable to you. you can relax this week, and it’s quite advisable to primarily keep it low key. to the extent that you can, stay home, and think scented candles, bubble baths, herbal tea before bed. watch your dreams extra closely, and do your best to learn new things (spiritually, academically, philosophically, or via “street smarts” if you must).

sagittarius: if you are feeling fidgety you will no doubt find something to grab hold of in the transits this week, but overall this is actually not a very intense week for sagittarians. yes, mercury goes retrograde, but how much does that usually slow you down? perhaps it is better to take note that your ruler jupiter does make a square with venus later in the week, and to keep in mind that although the aspect certainly has a tense feel, like nothing really fits, ultimately both of those planets are very benevolent.

capricorn: unless you also happen to be very mercurial, the retrograde of mercury is far from a priority for you, although you can use early this week to strengthen your defenses against ghosts you don’t want haunting you. just reserve the latter part of the week for the mars aspects and various squares involving your sign - if you can stay focused, you’re like a ninja.

aquarius: this week is a test of your values - but you have a strong sense of self, even if no one else can get a clear reading from you. it works to your advantage as you sort through what matters and what doesn’t really.

pisces: while i never condone overdoing the retrogrades of mercury, this one is important for you even more than it is for your fellow mutable signs of virgo and gemini, which are actually ruled by that planet. think back to march of last year. what lessons have you learned? more importantly, which ones are you still working on? they come into focus this week like it or not.

Merriam-webster: [gold digger is] a person whose romantic pursuit of, relationship with, or marriage to a wealthy person is primarily or solely motivated by a desire for money.

How gold digger thinks?

First of all, the gold digger calculates the profit and loss balance. They set a specific goal - that is, a man in the potential range, with specific financial resources - and gets to work. Gold digger is also a person who can put on various masks: they can take care of the victim so that when it ceases to be beneficial for them, turn on heel and disappear or show their true nature - icy and ruthless. If a victim has no money, the gold digger will disappear. If a victim shows that is impossible to manipulate them, the gold digger will disappear too. If a victim is too unpredictable and the gold digger can't predict what victim will do, GD will disappear too. The risk of exposure is too great.

They also often change the place of stay, place of residence, and can disappear very quickly. Gold diggers also often have two different types of personalities: privately they can be nice, loving, sweet, while towards others they can openly show contempt or dislike for people with lower social or employee status (e.g. towards their colleagues or subordinates or less wealthy people in general). They also value people who are higher on the social ladder and openly devaluate less wealthy people, who have nothing to offer for them.

GD often quickly perceive and treat their victims as a “partner”, even if they started dating only a few weeks or months ago or their victim is not their partner yet (but they want to be seen by others like that). A person who is surrounded by e.g. soldiers or other subordinates - people who take orders without getting into emotional relationships - are a very comfortable target.

If someone is not very prone to manipulation, they become uncomfortable, so gold digger must quickly disappear before the victim understands the whole situation and decides to take action.

The mentality is also important: for gold digger, it is the opportunity to quickly raise funds. They are able to manipulate their victim just to get money. Very often, they try to live lavishly beyond their means, or are unable to manage getting money.

Either way, they often lack the money they need. What are Nadine's character traits? CALCULATING NATURE. Nadine often calculates the 'profit and loss' balance. What pays off for her? Whose side should she be on? Is this safe? Although she is a mercenary and has a mercenary mentality, what matters to her is how much she can manipulate someone and how much money she can get off this way.

SHE OFTEN LACKS MONEY. In Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End it is emphasized that her army lost a few civil wars, and in Lost Legacy it is emphasized that she didn't have money at all, which means that she often lacks money - not only in these two specific parts of the game, but in most cases of her life in general.

DOUBLE NATURE (two sides of the coin). Nadine has a double nature: towards people above her or people whose social and financial status she does not yet know, she is kind, polite and even submissive (Rafe, Sully), while towards people who are lower on the social ladder or have nothing to offer, it is a direct and rather rude attitude (Sam, Orca, Chloe).

CAUSES EMOTIONAL PAIN FOR VICTIMS. “If you don't [do something], you will lose me or my trust”. “If you do something that I don't like or can't predict, I'll disappear and you won't see me again”. “I think you need him”. Nadine pointed out to Rafe that he needs Samuel to achieve his goal (because Rafe cannot achieve it alone). In this way, she pointed out his lack of knowledge, lack of skills, lack of a proper way of thinking, while at the same time binding Rafe more to herself. She did not criticize him openly or directly, but for a man like Rafe it was quite a painful pin, given his confidence and approach to such matters. At the same time, Nadine shows herself in the position of a person who will always understand the situation - despite the fact that she has made matters worse not informing Rafe about the ways of Shoreline acting, destroying potential monuments and things important for the adventure etc. But it was never "her" fault, only Rafe's or Nate's or Samuel's.

PARTNERS. But also Nadine is quickly considered to be someone's "partner" if it is convenient for her - for example, in the case of Rafe or Asav or Chloe (when eventually it turned out that Chloe is able to get Tusk). Importantly, she doesn't treat Samuel Drake it that way. This shows that Nadine sees people through double standards, judging who is better, who is more profitable to be with.

DO ALL JOB FOR ME. Nadine in Lost Legacy admits that her main strategy is to manipulate other people to do what is beneficial to her. Another strategy Nadine uses is “do all job and at the end and I'll take the prize”. Someone will do all the work for her, she will come to take everything. This is how she described her possible strategy to take Tusk of Ganesh.

DISAPPEARING. Nadine can disappear very quickly, when it's convenient for her: it is especially visible in the scenes in Uncharted 4, when Rafe refuses to give up her adventure, reveals that he bribed her subordinates and forces her to continue the expedition. Then Nadine begins to understand that Rafe had never let her manipulate him. Similarly, in Lost Legacy - furious Nadine tries to leave the place after an argument with Chloe. This shows that she is once again trying to escape in a situation where nothing goes her way and is in line with her expectations.

ONLY WEALTHY MEN WITHOUT FAMILY OR FRIENDS. Asav, a doctor (probably a military doc), a talented adventurer and an equally talented trader. Rafe, multimillionaire from his youngest days. An unnamed man from trust fund. And trust fund men usually are a wealthy men who inherit a family fortune from generation to generation. Both Asav and Rafe had no friends, only subordinates and were not emotionally connected with anyone. Does something more need to be added?

NO-NO LESS WEALTHY OR LOWER CLASS MEN. Nadine is not interested in people with lower social status or co-workers: although she is known for her character and ways of acting, she usually tries to seduce only her wealthier employers (Rafe, unsuccesful) or wealthy colleagues (Asav, unsuccesful), or this unnamed trust fund men. Nothing is known about her other partners, but it’s visible how she treats Samuel Drake: with disdain at every opportunity (apart from the fact that she should treat him as a partner in Lost Legacy, even though he saved her life). Sam Drake himself has nothing to offer her, unlike Chloe Frazer. ASAV Nadine had an affair with Asav, possibly knowing that he was married and probably had children. At the same time, Asav was probably a military doctor at the time (judging by his melee skills and military management, and by the fact that he would not work with Nadine under other circumstances). So he was wealthy during those days.

He probably looked for treasures for all those years (especially since his older soldiers remembered both him and Nadine). This means that he was already able to find treasures, he knew how to trade them. He knew where to get them, hide and sell them. This means that Asav was able to get BIG money QUICKLY. In addition, he probably did not have friends and was not emotionally involved with anyone, so probably no one had full insight into the state of his “relationship” with Nadine. The soldiers were only talking with each other that “I heard him talk about her... his wife wouldn't like it.”. This means that no one could rather make Asav know what situation he was in.

Despite that Nadine probably knew that he was married, that didn't stop her from trying to achieve her goal. As she said, she has been manipulating Asav as long as it was comfortable for her. Over time, however, she found out that Asav was a “psycho”. Manipulating Asav was no longer comfortable.

The question is: why?

Did Asav require a clear declaration from Nadine? Had he expected more from her than an innocent flirt? Or has he shown her his true nature? Or did he rather realize that he was simply manipulated and stood up to her?

As Lost Legacy shows us, Asav is a person who is in charge and position to decide about most things. He is also unpredictable, his mind cannot be changed so easily, he must have control over everything. He is also a person who rationally calculates risk and profits. Nadine herself admits that Asav is dangerous - unpredictable and very cunning.

That means Asav probably realized that he was being manipulated and did not allow Nadine do it any longer. After this Nadine suddenly disappeared, but Asav's feelings had not gone away despite the passage of time. At the end of the Lost Legacy Asav asks himself “what did I saw in you? Together we could achieve so much!”. But looking at the scenes in the game where he and Nadine interact with each other, however, Asav is aware of how Nadine treated him and this time he tries to keep his emotional distance, showing his character, which despite his desires is still adamant. Asav's example perfectly illustrates Nadine's way of acting: seduction is her favorite method of getting what she wants - unconditional submission and obedience. The problem with Rafe was - Rafe did not respond to her attempts at flirting and seduction in any way. He did not respond to her sensual gestures, ignoring them (this is especially seen in the scene in Scotland). Nadine’s efforts in this regard can be considered unsuccessful, given the fact what the game’s final scenes are.

Rafe, being a multimillionaire from an early age, was probably always a tasty bite for other girls: young, handsome, hardworking and possessing good finances. Perfect for gold digger, isn’t he? From the very beginning he had a lot of money and there was no problem for him to spend it. It was perfect for Nadine, who could invest - as part of her mercenary company - in new equipment (boats, transporters, weapons, dynamite, etc.), even if Rafe didn’t react to her actions.

Importantly, Rafe’s character traits can also be easily identified: first of all, he acts like a businessman. He acts like a businesmann and thinks like a businessman. Rafe is able to assess when to hide his true nature and show himself from the positive side. This is probably how he deceived Nadine - making her believe that he was a kind, rather open-minded man who would obey her decisions and principles. However, this means that, contrary to Nadine’s appearances and words, they have never “been partners”. Rafe decided it was more profitable to bribe her subordinates - he was aware, that when the situation becomes very bad, Nadine will disappear.

How could he know that?

Because men like Rafe very often meet gold diggers. This means that they know their way of thinking, how they act, they know what to expect from them. Rafe's tactic at the end also suggests that he was aware of what Nadine might be and what she really was hoping for. So, men like Rafe, know how to react to gold digger’s manipulations. So, in fact, Rafe was indifferent to let Nadine do exactly what he wanted.

Over time, however, Nadine began to understand that he did exactly the same as she did with him. The final scenes have proved her that Rafe never really let her manipulate him, he only pretended to cooperate with her. Then Nadine decided to leave - she said that “the expedition was too dangerous”.

This begs the question: If she wanted safety so much (which she explained her refusal to board Avery’s ship), why didn't she leave earlier, and just now?

She probably had hoped earlier that Rafe would succumb to her once again, that she would be manipulative again. However, she did not foresee only his determination. At the same time, Rafe stepped on her ambition - after all, she had been played, not him, like she wanted things to be. Nadine was unmasked.

He turned out to be too unpredictable like Asav, so the profit and loss of balance ceased to pay. Nadine realized that most likely, since nothing has happened during the expedition, nothing would happen after the expedition. No affair with Rafe after that, no more of Rafe’s money. And what is important - it is very likely that Rafe would claim his money for a job that Nadine did not complete. He was a businessman, after all.

So Nadine decided to disappear when she calculated the profits and losses. Unable to control Rafe any longer, she found it unprofitable. UNNAMED MAN FROM TRUST FUND Later, in Lost Legacy, Nadine herself tells Chloe that she was dating a trust fund guy. Unfortunately, it is difficult to determine what caused the romance itself to fail (or went good, but something happened that Nadine did not predict). However, this means that Nadine was again running out of money to survive (and that was one of the reasons Chloe decided to work with her). It seems that Nadine doesn't cope with finances, unless she has rich partners or employers who allow her to use their funds. Being a mercenary (though not having a mercenary mentality) and considering all those examples, it's hard not to think that Nadine's only goal is looking only for rich partners to finance her company and her future.

Tale 3: Rhodochrosite: Magician Emilia Locket (chapter 2. The Dream Pursuit 2/4 ) part 1. Stories of Beginnings

Emilia’s mother was completely correct. Emilia had gotten so frustrated with her mother that shortly after turning fifteen, she entered the junior magician license interview, passed, and left the next day. Her magician name was rhodohcrosite, a nice pink rock, pink like her costume and everything else she wore. When Emilia didn’t return from school that day her parents became worried. After three days they called the police. They never found Emilia in town, and her parents were devastated.

Emilia had originally planned to do some small shows to get a reputation, but she didn’t have a show partner and was so young she kept getting turned away from joints. Emilia was also avoiding doing street performances because she wanted to evade her parents. She had put in too much work. She had a hand made costume and everything. Emila sat on a park bench and looked at the sparkly vest, looking slightly disheartened as she slouched into her seat. At this point many youths would go home after missing their parents, and becoming lonely, scared, and cold. Perhaps such a child would hug and make amends with their parents; realizing life is hard and they are children that are not ready to fly from the nest quite yet. But Emilia isn’t one of those protagonists. Emilia was determined. However she also needed sustenance and a place to sleep. She wore pink and white sweaters, and skirts; had long platinum hair, fair skin, ebony eyes, and cute little black merry janes with knee socks. Emilia looked like an adorable innocent child. Thus, if she had asked anyone, they would have helped her out. Emilia knew if she did however, that they might contact her parents, and she was not ready to give up yet. Tired and frustrated, Emilia continued to wander for opportunities for room, board and audience. Emilia walked around town into the night in a sleepy haze when she suddenly came across what looked like a spaceship.

Emilia had the exact same reaction someone who just read that might of: ‘wait, what. Is that a space ship?!’, or ‘am I hallucinating from sleep deprivation?’, perhaps ‘am I going to be abducted?’ and most importantly ‘I can’t not check that out’. Convinced it was a dream, Emilia boarded. She had just unknowingly became an illegal inter-dimensional stowaway. When she arrived at an inter-realm hub, she was in a daze, but still convinced it wasn’t real. Emilia then caught a ride to a realm parallel to hers, with new confidence that she might find a job there! She was surprisingly unfettered. After all, if magic was real, anything was possible. Emilia had slept the trip to her destination and woke up to realize she had not been dreaming. She had a flash of shock before shrugging it off. It was too late to go back she thought. Indeed, Emilia’s parents were defiantly not going to see her for a while…

Emilia got straight to work finding a venue, checking out the town she arrived in, and looking for anyone to entertain. She even began doing a few street performances. No one here would know here or find her parents. She was convinced she was free. Emilia even got some tips and had some food. Emilia was admittedly having an excellent day. It was like a dream come true. The realm seemed just like hers, but no one had seen her type of magic before. Emilia had forgotten she was a junior high school kid with a family waiting for her. She was having a blast seeing all the smiles and trying new tricks in her sparkly costume. But fancy tricks tend to make people stand out. After a week of building a reputation and audience, someone asked the question “it’s the middle of a weekday. Shouldn’t this girl be at school? Where are her parents?” which is a question in stories involving children that is usually hidden away in the back of the minds of most people who indulge in tales about minors. Asking where the parents are would retract from enjoying suspension of disbelief, and whimsy of youth. Not today. Today someone contacted child services with the tip. The inter-realm investigation team in the town dropped by the neighborhood where the report originated. They tip had mentioned the child was magical. Magical things aren’t from around this place. The investigators found Emilia in full costume musing a crowd by whipping a chain of handkerchiefs from her breast pocket into doves. She was promptly and forcefully pulled into the family services van, doves and all. It took a whole hour. Don’t laugh. Those doves were well trained.

SUNSHINE - Official Character Backstories

@viiridians invited me on a quest to re-find the official Sunshine character backstories, which I finally did on this old archived production site. I thought I’d also post them here for anyone who wants them!

CAPA PHYSICIST Nationality: American When Capa was seventeen, he wrote a paper which he submitted to America’s foremost scientific journals. It contributed to the understanding of dark matter, and in particular a theory for a controlled method releasing its energy. Although dark matter theory was already well advanced, Capa’s theory assisted in the formation of the principle on which the Stellar Bomb was constructed for the Icarus I mission. Capa was too young to have accompanied this first Icarus mission. But in the intervening years, Capa continued his research. By the time it was realised that the first mission had failed, and preparations for a second mission began, Capa was the world’s foremost expert on the dark matter bomb. Because Capa is the only member of the crew who is not, by history and training, an astronaut, he is an outsider. In this respect, much of the crew see him as effectively a piece of valuable equipment, which must be transported intact to the delivery point. Kaneda, however, feels differently towards Capa. He feels protective in a way which is partly paternal. He knows that it is hard for Capa being an outsider, a passenger, and goes out of his way to make Capa feel included. What Kaneda doesn’t fully realise is that Capa is by nature a loner. He is perfectly content with his own company, working in the dark interior of the Stellar Bomb. Searle does realise this - in fact, it is Capa’s self-contained quality that Searle likes. And Capa likes Searle equally. The two of them get on: they talk the same language, and have a similar sense of humour. Although they are both fundamentally loners, the relationship between them is actually the strongest bond in the crew. Capa is better than Kaneda at chess, and so he always lets Kaneda play white. Capa sometimes lets Kaneda win. Intellectually and internally, Capa is an atheist. CASSIE PILOT Nationality: American Cassie’s background is military - she entered the space program through her experience as a pilot in the US air-force. But she does not fit the stereotype of military personnel. She is non-competitive. She has no particular interest in, or attraction to, machismo. She doesn’t have an automatic deferential response to rank or duty. Cassie has a personal interest in the arts. She was the only crew member who packed books in her kit-bag as personal possessions. Both instinctively and academically, Cassie is a humanist. She likes people, she cares about people. Her sense of mankind is non-cynical and forgiving: she would believe that, in general and as a default position, people are good. Cassie is an atheist. She doesn’t believe in God because she sees no reason for God to exist. She is confident in herself. She is comfortable within her own skin. On the psychological profiles about who would cope best with the long-term deep-space mission, Cassie’s score was the highest. There were pilots in the space program who matched and exceeded her skill, but none that were seen as more suitable for the stresses and pressures of the mission. She has no primary partner, and, as with all the crew, she has no children. However, four months before the mission left Earth Orbit, Cassie became pregnant. The identity of the father was known only to her: he was never aware that Cassie was briefly carrying his child. She terminated the pregnancy after six weeks. The only member of the crew who knows this is Searle, who assisted her in hiding her blood test results from the other doctors in the space program. The termination of her pregnancy had a subtle effect on her outlook - a discreet emotional accent in her perception of life, and death. This nuance might have skewed her psychological profiling, had the most crucial psych-tests not already been carried out. She dreams continuously about the surface of the sun. CORAZON BIOLOGIST Nationality: Chinese Corazon was born in Manila, but her Chinese/Filipino parents moved to the Chinese mainland when she was a young girl. She worked in the Pan-Asian Space program, but, like Trey and Kaneda, was drafted into the US program to work on the Icarus project. Corazon is a career astronaut from the Chinese space program. Her area of specialised knowledge is the cultivation of high-yield oxygen-producing plants. For the last fifteen years, Corazon has been based on the international Moon stations, where she supervised the oxygen production and recycling program. Whereas everyone else on the crew see their mission as to secure the future of mankind, Corazon sees the protection of life in broader terms. Her wish would be to protect Earth as a single biosphere, of which mankind is just one part. Corazon’s feelings for her plants and the Oxygen Garden are more intense than her feelings for any of the crew. When xxxxspoilerxxx, Corazon is bereaved. In emotional terms, she feels the loss of xxxxspoilerxxx more deeply than the loss of xxxxspoilerxxxx. Out of all the crew, her natural ally is Mace. Although she is calmer and less hot-blooded than Mace, they are both pragmatists. They both work with their hands. And most importantly, they are not sentimental. This is most clear when it comes to xxxxspoilerxxxx. Corazon is the only crew member who has never used the calming properties of the Earth Room. For her, the Earth Room is simply artificial, and she prefers instead to spend solitary time in her beloved Oxygen Garden. Corazon is married, but like all the crew of Icarus II, she has no children. In her final recorded message to her husband, she spoke no words. Instead she gazed at the screen for exactly one minute, then smiled, and sent the message home. When Corazon sleeps, she dreams of rice-field terraces cut into hillsides. HARVEY COMMS OFFICER, SECOND IN COMMAND Nationality: American Harvey is a veteran of the US space program, and is one of the few members of the Icarus II crew to have had any involvement in the Icarus I mission. As a young graduate into the Icarus project, he worked as a junior engineer on the Icarus I comms system. Harvey is a Protestant. He is married to his childhood sweetheart. They are without children. He earned his place on the Icarus II mission partly as a result of his invention of the LIGHT BOX COMMS SYSTEM. Built into his console, when he immerses himself in this oddly thick beam of light, he can cancel out the noise of background interference from radiation storms and solar flares. It is this space he retreats to, of purity of sound, to escape from the stresses and pressures of the deep-space mission. Harvey earned his rank on the Icarus II mission partly by hard work and all-round abilities. He is a fine engineer, and would be able to perform most of Mace, Trey, and Cassie’s duties at an equal level. His physical fitness and general health is extremely good. He consistently scored highest in crew fitness tests. He also scored extremely highly on psych tests, as a dependable and stable member of the crew. However, in the psych tests, he managed to disguise (and they failed to detect) his Achilles heel… … which is his attachment to his wife. Simply, he misses her. He dreams of her every night. He is terrified by the idea that he will not survive the mission, and never see her again. It is this weakness that eats away inside him. KANEDA CAPTAIN Nationality: Japanese Kaneda was born in Kyoto. He worked for many years in the Pan-Asian Space Program, with both Corazon and Trey. He was then transferred to the Icarus Project, based first in America, and then on the orbiting international space station. In both age and time spent in space flight, he is the most experienced astronaut of the crew. He was a natural choice to lead the second mission. The entire crew of Icarus II are deferential to him. No one questions his authority or judgement. Kaneda has no wife and no children. He is Buddhist. He has an unforced and pragmatic spiritualism. In his sleeping quarters, he has a small shrine. Outwardly, Kaneda is a model of calm, and he leads by example. But privately, he obsesses about fate of Icarus I. He questions and re-questions the failure of the previous mission. Kaneda feels paternalistic towards all his crew, but in particular, Capa. This is partly because Capa is the youngest, but also because Capa is the only crew member who is not a career astronaut. He knows that it is hard for Capa being an outsider, a passenger, and goes out of his way to make Capa feel included. Kaneda’s closest intellectual equal is Searle. Searle is the only member of the crew with whom he would maintain a friendship outside the context of the mission. Searle and Kaneda are the only crew members of Icarus II to have xxxxspoilerxxxx personally. When he sleeps, Kaneda’s dreams are dominated by images of xxxxspoilerxxxx. MACE ENGINEER Nationality: American Mace is in some senses a blue-collar scientist: his specialist area is Engineering. He doesn’t understand the code programming that creates the Icarus Flight Computer - because no one does. The coding behind Icarus is so immensely complex that it required other computers to generate it. But what Mace does understand is the circuitry mapping and the mechanics that run it. His family background is military. He grew up on air-bases; both parents were pilots. He has an innate belief in the chain of command, and an innate distrust of those - such as Capa - who sit outside the chain of command. His mind is practical and three-dimensional, not abstract. He has never read a book for pleasure. He would rather spend spare time doing push-ups than listening to music. He cuts his hair short because life is easier that way. He is honest. He has no vanity, but he does have pride. Mace is disgusted with himself when he finds that, over the long journey to Mercury, he has lost his focus on the mission. The xxxxspoilerxxxx is his epiphany. He makes it a catalyst for his focus to return - and from that moment on, his focus on the mission is total. He is the only crew member whose vision remains unclouded in respect of this goal. He is unsentimental. He doesn’t like Capa, but he immediately xxxxspoilerxxxx, because he knows Capa is more central to the mission’s success. He is morally uncomplicated. If xxxxspoilerxxxx is what is required to complete the mission, he’ll support the action, and do the job himself. He has a dry sense of humour which is for his own benefit rather than anyone else’s. That is to say, he doesn’t crack a joke in order to make other people laugh. He is not a firebrand. If anything, he is the opposite. His mind is clear, and is not cluttered by the confusions of adrenaline or passion. Losing his temper with Capa is the exception; not the rule. He never remembers his own dreams. If he did, he’d find, to his surprise, that he often dreams of Cassie. SEARLE DOCTOR AND PSYCH OFFICER Nationality: American Searle is not married. Searle is the only crew member who did not have a counter-part on Icarus I. Icarus I had a doctor, but no psychiatrist. Endless theories were developed and explored for the failure of Icarus I. Searle was the primary advocate for the theory that the failure of the mission might have been for psychological reasons - the psychiatric collapse of one or all of the crew. He spent years researching the effects of deep-space travel and its effects on the mind - during which time he developed and created the Earth Room. As a consequence of his research, he argued strongly that the Med Officer on Icarus II should also be a qualified psychiatrist. It was an argument he won. Its unintended consequence was that Searle himself was chosen as the Psych Officer for the mission. His own psychological profile is of a man who is extremely emotionally stable. He is even-tempered. He has a good sense of humour. He is not given to panic or hasty decisions. However, he is also a man who is eternally separate from other people. He is detached. A watcher. Unjudgemental. Oddly unconcerned. This can make him appear (particularly to Mace) unprofessional. Searle is the only member of the crew to know that Cassie became pregnant, and aborted her child, during the final stages of the Icarus II preparation. He helped her hide this from continuous medical examinations, by using earlier samples of blood and urine tests. Searle’s motivations and his agendas are his own, and could best be described as philosophical. Ultimately, he believes only this: the larger the searchlight, the larger the circumference of the unknown. Searle does not believe in God. But he thinks that sometimes he glimpses God, hidden in the sunshine. Whether this tells himself something about God, or something about himself, is unclear to him. TREY NAVIGATOR Nationality: Chinese Trey was born in Hong Kong. Trey has a prodigious ability with mathematics. He has can perform extremely complicated calculations in his head, and can perform the classic mathematician’s party-trick: to tell you what day of the week any given date fell on. When he was only twelve, he achieved a brief world-wide notoriety as the writer of the Hong-Kong-King-Kong computer virus, which wiped out the operational abilities of twelve percent of the planet’s computers in a single day, freezing up the systems and replacing them with a picture of a gorilla beating its chest, swiped from the 1980s Nintendo Donkey Kong game. Although he was just old enough for criminal prosecution, he was spared any kind of juvenile prison sentence because he was talent-spotted by the Pan-Asian space program. He worked in China until he was nineteen. Then, like Corazon and Kaneda, he relocated to the US to work on the Icarus project. His extreme talent for mathematics is also the cause of his mistake on the mission. He is unwilling to give the role of recalculating the changed flight trajectory to Icarus, because he is afraid to delegate such an important task to anyone, or anything, else. This decision is not born from arrogance. It is simply the safest option from his point of view - he knows the limits of his own parameters, and feels more comfortable if all variables are known to him, and under his direct control. In fact, Trey is the opposite of arrogant. His breakdown is a consequence of his inability to blame anyone else for the mistake xxxxspoilerxxxx but himself - despite the fact that the decision to xxxxspoilerxxxx was not his own. His closest friend out of the crew is Mace. Trey is not married, has no partner, and no children. When he sleeps, he dreams of number sequences.

Welcome to this American’s freak-out over her international move

As I sit here staring at my computer screen envisioning what my life will be like in 2019, I feel a deep sense of bittersweet nostalgia as though I’ve already moved. I’m not just moving to another city but to another country and in less than a month. I have planned for this move for a year, so you would think I would be elated, and I am but somehow fear has started to creep into my thoughts. What if I hate my new home? What if I can’t make it or find a job? What if I can’t take being so far from my friends and family? All valid questions that I don’t have the answer to.

Let me take you back a little further to the beginning of last year. I hated my job where my boss was a certifiable whack job and I was closing in on 40 faster than you can say Botox. I had a mini mid-life crisis that did not involve having an affair or buying a sports car that I would need to sell my kidney in order to buy (trust me, no one would want my liver) but decided a move was the answer. Yes, a move, but where? I thought about all the countries with warm climates where they speak English. I’ll tell you what friends, that list is very short. I came up with America (been there done that), Australia, and Singapore. Now I love Australia so much so that I married an Australian, but I wasn’t ready to move to my husband’s country where I only knew his friends and family. I wanted an adventure. I wanted to move somewhere we both have never lived together. I wanted to move somewhere exotic – and the South in America wasn’t going to cut it. Enter Singapore.

It had always been a dream of mine to move to a different country and after almost 9 years in one of my favorite cities in the world, San Francisco, I was ready. I would have done it before I met my husband, but the timing never worked. Now, however, was a different story. We don’t have children - check. I’m professionally at a crossroads in my sales profession, I’ve been in San Francisco for almost a decade and I want to focus more on writing – check, check, check,

My husband, not so much in a crossroads like me, it wasn’t easy to convince him, in fact it took at least 4-5 months to really get him locked in and sold on the idea. He’s the worrier so he was bound and determined to worry, about me mostly. How would I cope with moving to another country I’d never even visited? What would our housing and job situation work out? And most importantly how he was going to watch his beloved sports in Singapore (he’s basically American now despite the funny accent)? I was only really worried about not having Taco Bell again anytime soon in the foreseeable future, but I digress. He was right to worry. He would most likely get to transfer with his job while I would need a little time to land a new 9-5 and during that time, he’d be supporting us both.

Fast forward to today, where I have effectively been without employment for 4 months because we ‘thought’ we’d be moving in November. Surprise – more like January 2019. But no worries, we’ll just rack up points and a balance on that joint credit card we applied for when we got married. Luckily my partner is getting an awesome relocation package for us to move but many of us are not that lucky. It’s an expensive venture to move to a different country unless you’re taking the clothes on your back and one suitcase. Nevertheless, moving out of the country takes some gumption and some moxie, and some huge cojones. Apologies, that’s my Southern California upbringing revealing itself.

So now that the end of waiting is insight, I feel a bit more nervous than intrepid as I thought I’d feel. I know it’s just my nerves typing but thinking about all I have to do makes me want to run to my bed and put the covers over my head. It will be me selling and getting rid of all our furniture and figuring out what we need to pack. My husband will help of course but since I’m ‘fun-employed’ currently, I have to earn my keep somehow. Not to mention we will also need to find a place to live, make new friends (because hello, I need someone who enjoys brunch as much as I do) and we’ll have to adjust to life in an Asian country and all during the holiday season.

You’re probably asking yourself why I would ever consider doing this with all the risk it might entail. I guess I’d say it’s because I believe in no regrets. A lot of my life has been me not giving the next year or the next 5 years a second thought. I just thought, whatever happens, happens. Then I started to see that this actually is not how things happen, in my life anyway. Things happen to me or they did before I decided to do something about it. I began to think that, you know what, sometimes you need to make things happen and that’s exactly what I plan on doing. I’m writing a book also by the end of the year (did I mention I’m insane?) and I’m moving because I want to have that experience. Who knows what the next year may bring, but I know I won’t pine for a life I didn’t try to make happen.

And if you’re thinking you could never move to another city let alone country, I totally understand that inclination, but believe me, if I can do this you probably can too. What’s really the worst that can happen? For me, probably malaria but here I go, Singapore or bust!

Sleeping Habits: Erratic, well-established from when he was younger. Nicky’s never been able to go to sleep early a day of his life so while he’s far from a morning person, he’s also way too much of an overthinker-type to wallow around alone in bed and ends up inevitably kicking his own ass out before ten almost every day unless he’s absolutely exhausted. Consistently has bizarre dreams that he rarely remembers. High-functioning on his standard five to six hours, with the help of morning coffee.

Eating Habits: He’s trying to be healthy, he promises, but his best friend is still skillet-friendly breakfast food and a microwave and if it’s a portable meal, even better.

Exercise Habits: He ran track and field in high school and after graduating promptly never formally exercised again. A little bit of typical living room fitness, has been slowly getting back into running this past year, still doesn’t break more than twice a week when he remembers to do the damn thing, but when he does he tends to go until his lungs burn and his legs wobble underneath him to make up for it.

Emotional Stability: I thought of like five different numbers and changed my mind because I honestly have no idea. Does it count as stable if you’re emotionally in flux but you’re doing it consistently? There’s no way to avoid stress or frustration or over-stimulation in this line of work, Nick at this point embraces it and lets the adrenaline call the shots and get him back to neutrality later.

Sociability: God, listen, Nicky’s such a fucking extrovert but he doesn’t LET himself fully flourish the way he should. He digs having a wide circle of people and he likes conversation and he likes to have a good time, but he ain’t gonna Trust Like That right off the bat in Dertosa. Walking absolutely everywhere. A huffed laugh or a low chuckle instead of loud and outright cackling. Letting his silence and his gaze ask his questions for him. And one clear nervous tic: licking his lips. If he’s stressed out over a long enough time, they inevitably start getting chapped and he’ll pick at it until he makes himself bleed if the stress is pervasive enough.
