the sheer number of incredibly intricate worlds and characters that i have created with people who i am no longer friends with so that i can no longer talk about those characters or use those settings. i only got half the dog in the divorce do you know what i mean
#i have all these characters but they're missing their FRIENDS and their ORIGINAL CIRCUMSTANCES#people will never understand roleplay with original settings and original characters.#imagine if you played dnd purely by talking about the characters and their relationships with each other and their themes and motifs#and did all the little roleplay scenarios but wrote about it. and then made a bunch of supplementary material for your characters.#and then like. instead of one character you've got like three of them and they're all Part of this collaborative world#mourning the group of like. dkjfghs. nine friends from a fantasy world. i only have claim to like three of them#the rest... again. only half the dog#i WILL use prydwen elsewhere. because i'm in love with him and that's important in a character. he's literally my silly rabbit#but GOD i want to get my fucking hands on people's intellectual property sometimes#i was the ONLY one doing cool shit with the fantasy sci-fi world this one person created and i WANT to do more with it!!!#and like. how am i supposed to use zephyr without stealing the incredibly specific circumstances that they were created out of#anyway. frustrating. at least i have prydwen. hugging him like a teddy bear#yeah girl i have ocs except i don't talk about them on tumblr i'm in my little roleplay servers that i created the ocs for dskfgh#honestly i have probably talked about faedren more than any actual character of mine from like. Writing.#also my fault for not having any actual wips. long form or even short form fiction is not my strong suit nothing rlly sticks#WHATEVER. feel like shit just want her back (all of the characters that are inextricably intertwined with someone else)#valentine notes

DEATH TO COPYRIGHT FOREVER, DOWNLOAD EVERYTHING, DO WHATEVER YOU WANT WITH ART ALWAYS AND FOREVER AMEN
#which btw is a complicated thing for me. i do not believe llms to be ontologically bad because i don’t#think any technology is. the threat that AI poses is to do with capitalism: a profit motive to replace people’s livelihoods (especially#that of artists and other creatives) with a machine. however i do think that if you#are genuinely as against copyright and the notion of intellectual property as you say you are; you should see no#<prev#I really want to engage in a debate#I won't go into copyright law that right now protect mainly big actors#However and this is important LLM and AI is not only AI writing or generative AI writing stuff#it's the tip of the iceberg of AI being trained on stories to do corporate work what is the crux of it#I have front seat to witness it and it's not even the worst of it#AI drained water and energy from places that need it badly / it is a social disaster for its moderators#when we talk about the social disaster this is this social disaster that we should talk about more machines equal more people killed for#the rare minerals#the debate about jobs lost should be about re training in other jobs or even better minimum salary without a job#switching to dystopian-scifi in the end we won't win against the robots as a workforce and that's why we have to fight for guaranteed l#living wage everywhere for everybody and keeping corporations at bay / I know it sounds like a fight too hard to fight but there are ways#there is hope#anyway I derailed a lot

What exactly are patent illustrations, and why are they so important?
In the dynamic world of intellectual property, patent illustrations play a crucial role in conveying complex innovations visually. These illustrations, often referred to as patent drawings or figures, are visual representations accompanying a patent application. But what exactly are patent illustrations, and why are they so important?
Tumblr media
What are Patent Illustrations?
Patent illustrations are detailed visual depictions of an invention submitted alongside the written description in a patent application. These drawings are designed to complement the technical details in the application, providing a comprehensive and clear understanding of the invention. They serve as a universal language that transcends linguistic barriers, aiding patent examiners, inventors, and the public in grasping the essence of a novel idea.
Tumblr media
The Key Components of Patent Illustrations:
Clarity and Detail: Patent drawings must be clear, concise, and sufficiently detailed to represent the invention accurately. Each element should be labeled and accompanied by reference numerals to correlate with the written description.
Technical Accuracy: Precision is paramount. Patent illustrations should adhere to the specific rules and guidelines set by the patent office, ensuring technical accuracy and compliance with industry standards.
Different Views: Depending on the complexity of the invention, patent illustrations may include various views such as perspective views, cross-sectional views, exploded views, and more. These different perspectives help convey the invention comprehensively.
The Use and Importance of Patent Illustrations:
Enhancing Understanding: Patent illustrations provide a visual aid that enhances the understanding of the invention, making it easier for patent examiners to assess the uniqueness and novelty of the idea.
Global Communication: In the global landscape of innovation, patent illustrations serve as a universal language. They enable inventors and stakeholders worldwide to comprehend the essence of an invention without relying solely on textual descriptions.
Legal Protection: Patent illustrations are integral to the patent application process. They contribute to the legal protection of an invention by offering a detailed visual representation that strengthens the claims made in the written description.
Facilitating Examination: Patent examiners rely on illustrations to efficiently evaluate the technical aspects of an invention. Well-crafted illustrations streamline the examination process, potentially expediting the patent approval timeline.
Tumblr media
In conclusion, patent illustrations are not just drawings; they are indispensable tools in the realm of intellectual property. They bridge the gap between innovative ideas and their legal protection, providing a visual narrative that transcends boundaries and propels the progress of technology and innovation. As inventors navigate the intricate path of patent applications, the artistry and precision of patent illustrations become invaluable allies in securing a brighter future for groundbreaking ideas.

If you haven't heard the news, it recently came out that Disney pulled a trans-empowering episode of the show Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. In the time since the news came to light, I've seen a few people say Disney can't accurately be accused of censoring queer content, because "censorship is only done by the government."
Let's talk about the Hays Code a bit.
The Hays Code was a major form of American media censorship. The Hays Code was also not a government policy! While former American politicians were involved in the creation of the Code, they were not acting in capacity as United States government officials by the time the Code was enacted.
The Hays Code was enforced within the Hollywood studio system, never by the United States government. It was successful because the same studios that owned the films also owned the cinemas, which allowed them to enforce which films were shown. (This is called "vertical integration.") The Hays Code ultimately fell apart when anti-trust legislation separated cinema ownership from the studios, meaning filmmakers did not have to adhere to studio censorship in order to show their films to the public.
(If you're interested in reading more about the Hays Code, I recommend the book Pre-Code Hollywood: Sex, Immorality, and Insurrection in American Cinema, 1930-1934, written by Thomas Doherty. It'll get you started.)
Corporate censorship is very much a form of censorship. Companies such as Disney have immense political and social power. Disney owns obscene amounts of intellectual property. It employs a couple hundred thousand people globally according to Statista. Disney is a political entity, especially in regions it operates theme parks (such as Florida, where I live).
If the Disney company decides something is forbidden, it has a hell of a lot of influence. Disney absolutely has the power to enact censorship. I wrote a five thousand word essay about how Disney nearly killed the Nimona movie, and that's just one recent example.
Corporate censorship is absolutely censorship, and it's important to call it what it is.

A little reminder in these Neil Gaiman times:
Abusers groom allies as much as they groom victims. When they get accused, they need to have a list of people who will say they could never. They go out of their way to help you. They're funny and charming. They want you on the witness stand in their future trial.
If you got groomed as an ally and not as a victim, you would have no way of knowing who they are behind closed doors and you're not a bad person because you believed them.
The only thing you can do now is decide what to do with the information you have. That's the only part that is your responsibility alone, and you can choose to Sunk Cost Fallacy this shit or you can choose to be better. That is the one choice the abuser has left in your hands, make it wisely.
Sunk Cost Fallacy also applies to how invested you are in an artist's work. How much it defined you. How much it helped you through the hard times. How you imprinted onto these characters and let them share the burden of living with you for a while or a lifetime.
As a veteran of the 2007 Harry Potter internet forums, I am here to tell you that you did that. Neil didn't do that. The lessons you learned, the ways of being you adopted, the comfort you found, you did that. Neil Gaiman wasn't in your library nook or bedroom or study hall or apartment walking you through it. You consumed An Art and applied it to your own life because you are a sympathetic human being who wants to find community with other human beings.
The lessons you learned are yours. They aren't tainted by his behavior because he wasn't in your room telling you how to feel. You were feeling on your own. Take those lessons forward into something new and better.
None of this is an excuse to keep consuming his intellectual property and I will judge you hardcore for doing so, signed, the girl with a HP tattoo who hasn't read HP or fanfic in over a decade.
You don't get to keep it because it was important to you. It was important to you because of who you are, not because of who he is, and you can bestow your precious sympathy and attention somewhere else going forward. I believe in you.
Godspeed, little angels and demons.

I know that I am preaching to the anti-AI choir, but I genuinely believe that skills like summarizing, articulating, and refining an argument, engaging with existing research or information yourself, and going through the process of crafting materials are core skills for life but also for many careers, and outsourcing those degrades people's ability to think critically and engage with ideas.
Even ignoring the fact that generative AI is awful for the environment and based almost entirely in intellectual property theft and has a bunch of other ethical issues, using gen AI as a crutch will actually just make you worse at both engaging with life and doing many professional jobs.
But also, beyond this, you will benefit from actively engaging with research and the news and shaping, summarizing, and articulating arguments.
Can you read a piece of news or an article and understand the point it is making? Do you know how to identify the biases of the source? Do you know how to understand what you are reading in the context of that bias?
Can you shape an argument based on information you have engaged with? Can you validate that argument by seeking out additional relevant information? Can you describe that argument to someone who is familiar with the subject matter? Can you describe or summarize that argument to someone who is not familiar with the subject matter?
Can you articulate your point--whether it is an argument or just a question--in written format? Can you articulate it out loud? Do you know how to shape what you are expressing to a given audience?
Being able to articulate yourself clearly, in a logical structure that is based on verified evidence, is important for so much of life.

I'm so surprised at the amount of pro copyright in this circle?? in the transformative-works-are-very-important-to-my-life circle???? agreeing that creativity and innovation can only occur in a legal culture that places restrictions which kinds are allowed??? I thought we were all in agreement that intellectual property should be abolished. it is absolutely not on the side of small artists, never has been and never will be, that's just capitalist propaganda, which you are not immune to. please people if you see this and you disagree at least read Against Intellectual Monopoly by Boldrin and Levine first
--
It's mostly a reaction to hustle culture and intrusive social behaviors, not actually an argument about the law.
