“you have to show everyone that you were right and they were wrong.”
i’m so fascinated by what gwen says here because there are ways in which it feels almost antithetical to a more surface level reading of her character (that does, at times, feel like the one the show wants us to engage with.) she doesn’t say that exposing valiant is the Right Thing To Do or appeal to a sense of honor or justice in the broader sense, even though i’m sure she does think that and believe those values apply here.
what she says here is… so self-interested, on merlin’s behalf. she believes him pretty implicitly (she asks once if he’s telling the truth, he says yes, she doesn’t question it) and her main reaction is “you have to do something to prove you were right.”
and i think part of that comes from just, like, really liking merlin right away / seeing the good of humanity in him (something i will maintain forever is mutually a big part of what they see in each other) and being offended on his behalf, feeling that he’s been Wronged. so like, justice is at play in her mind here, but it’s on a far more personal, intimate level than just being about Doing What’s Right.
and i also don’t think it’s a reach to say gwen might be doing some projection here. it might not have been on the same level/with the same stakes, but how many times do you think gwen had to bite her tongue when she knew she was right about something? morgana is kind to her as an employer at this point—far kinder than many nobles would be to their servants. but there is still and uneven balance to their dynamic, and even if morgana is willing to hear her out about certain things, in front of other nobles, in front of court, in front of uther—gwen knows her word doesn’t count for much, either.

i have to speak my truth. every time suzie got complimented for “dominating the competition” i felt like i was being gaslit.
speaking as a dedicated tooter and Certified Suzie Glazer. anon i kind of agree with you.
i can’t say i was surprised when everyone said that suzie should go home but i was still definitely confused. lexi i understood with her specific suzie situation, but with everyone else it’s like. why are you so singularly focused on suzie when she had almost the exact same track record as onya and sam at that point in time.
my theory is that her momentum in the first few episodes set her up as The One To Beat and the other girls responded accordingly, even after her track record starting plateauing. first impressions and all that. i think it might also have to do with the level of confidence she went into every performance challenge with, which the other queens kind of fell for. whether that confidence was warranted (the rusical and the acting challenges) or not (…snatch game), a lot of the other girls were nervous about how well suzie seemed like she might do, despite the difference between that and the actual scores.
i still think suzie was a really strong competitor! like i said before, she broke a record set by bianca del rio for number of episodes above the bottom three, and tbh i think she deserved more credit for some of her runways. but i don’t understand the idea the queens had that suzie was absolutely sweeping the season and not like. evenly matched with the other front runners.
it’s not like suzie ate up the season and won the season, but she did good, you know?

Of course Izuku will want to save Shigaraki, that sort of theme has been ingrained in the series since the first chapter.
When we think about important moments in the series (and especially chapter 1) we often think about "you can be a hero" and "my body moved on its own". But think about it; what prompts both of those? What is the single moment that spurs the entire series into action?
It’s Bakugo being in danger and Deku rushing to save him.
Deku, a quirkless kid who has been relentlessly bullied for the past 10 years, rushes into a life-threatening situation in order to save the boy who bullied him. His instinct is to save a person he has every right not to save, but he does it anyways because that’s who he is. He’s a HERO (not the profession, simply a true, good hearted hero).
So yeah, I think it’s very poetic that 400+ chapters later, Deku is once again faced with a character he has every right not to save, but he decides he has to anyways because this person is in pain. This person has suffered and needs help.
And Deku is a hero.

Honestly if Adventure Time keeps getting more spin-offs I’d love to see one specifically about Simon and Marceline’s time surviving the mushroom war. We’ve gotten glimpses of it during I Remember You, Simon and Marcy, Stakes, and the new episode Simon Petrikov, but I feel like between Simon and the crown, whatever was going on with Elise and Hunson, and the vampires apparently having known Simon, there’s a solid premise for a series there.

the thing that bothers me most about dabb era supernatural is that he treats the audience like we’re stupid. he makes the brothers caricatures of themselves so this brother is SMART and that brother is STUPID and this brother is RIGHT and that brother is WRONG. the moral lesson of every episode is spelled out for you a hundred times in giant blinking neon letters that you must B E L I E V E in YOURSELF and TRUST your FAMILY. the audience is incapable of reaching any conclusion about what they just saw without being handheld so characters are constantly saying “well what does this mean for us” “what happens now” etc.
like sure kripke thought we were stupid but at least he invented new ways to break the fourth wall and tell us that to our faces. dabb patronized us, which is somehow worse.

Corruption!Jon but with bees, so parts of his skin resemble honeycomb. Elias pressing his fingers into the delicate hollowed out tissue honey dripping down his wrist. Places which are not meant for fingers, but which feel so good. The bees buzzing around harmlessly because they know their vessel is safe. Elias licking honey out of each of the tiny chambers, starting with the hollowed out space near his collarbone, ending at the one located on his upper thigh a few inches from his next target. The tiny membranes that connect the little chambers of honey tearing in places as they they are invaded. Jon going completely limp letting Elias do whatever he wants.
Do you see my vision.

i am very wary of when redemption arcs coincide with enemies-to-lovers arcs because like. is this man redeemed or is he temporarily outsourcing his morals to his girlfriend in order to maintain his relationship

Being vegan I think is one of those things (like having sex) that makes sense for a human au of an angel but not their canon existence. I’ve definitely made a post about how canon lucifer is virgin but human lucifer is a slut because of the way their respective scale and experience in the world affects how their Issues™ present themselves and the same thing applies to not eating meat. If you apply lucifer’s vaguely ecoterrorist views (an important part of his character) to a human it definitely makes sense for them to be vegan or vegetarian! But if canon lucifer wants to make a change in factory farming he’s not going to change his consumer habits he’s going to flatten the building. Hence, killing things with his teeth.

Lack of media literacy and unwillingness to engage with a text on anything other than surface level are huge issues but so is literary elitism. “I don’t understand this book so it’s obviously trying too hard to be meaningful and symbolic” “of course you think that; you only read YA fiction.” Can we all just start by accepting that not everything will be to our personal taste and said personal taste doesn’t determine what is objectively good or bad? Everyone should read as broadly as they are able to, and being a dick to people about what they read is not going to encourage them to branch out. It’s a good thing to challenge yourself with what you read. Sometimes that means picking up that impenetrable literary classic and doing some extra work to decipher the symbolism, and sometimes that means being open to the premise that genre fiction or books written for kids can be well-written and meaningful.
