Viridian irises flickered towards the magus in a slight embarrassment as the King placed three cake boxes upon the table. Green tea cake, chocolate cake and a strawberry shortcake-- lips parted to mumur in the softest of tones, Artoria could only wonder if she had purchased too many of them. ❝ H-Happy Birthday, Rin-- my apologies, the assortment of cakes were simply too vast and I could not decide on just one flavour!❞

rin’s birthday.

─「凛」─  the MAGUS had her curiosity piqued when the king of knights told her to wait here as she had something to give her. the small glint in those EMERALD ORBS of hers was more than enough for the heiress to smile a little and watched the saber disappeared for a moment in anticipation. was it her imagination that the KING seemed ... a little excited than her usual self ? not to say that she wasn’t upbeat on a normal basis but ... there was a little something that seemed more SPECIAL than usual.

               of course, her curiosity and suspicion was proven correct as the BLONDE returned with not one, but THREE boxes of cake to be placed upon the table. the beautiful matcha cake decorated with small pieces of white chocolate. next to it was a mouth-watering CHOCOLATE CAKE with dark sauce coated the outside, making it almost shiny. and last but not least, the CREAMY, white cake with fresh cream and juicy strawberries adorning the top. they all looked absolutely AMAZING.

               “ saber --- these are --- ” but before she could finish her sentence, the BRITISH KING quickly murmured out a soft birthday wish and a small apology for her INDECISIVENESS on choosing only one cake for the occasion. the way her volume dipped lower almost in embarrassment told the master of archer just how she thought she had committed something WRONG for not being able to make a choice so simple.

               a blink --- and then two ---

               before she couldn’t help sputtering a CHUCKLE out of adoration.

               “ ahahahah --- is that why you look so worried, saber ? you think i’d be mad at you for buying all of them ... ? ” of course, she didn’t mean to laugh like that but surely she wasn’t laughing at the KING OF KNIGHTS, more on how adorable she felt the other was for being so concerned over this. it was cute --- really, for her to FIDGET a bit, looking almost shy about her being unable to choose one cake out of so many options available to her.

               holding back her soft giggles, she leaned over a bit, placing her elbows upon the counter as her head tilted to the side, a genuine smile adorning her lips

               “ you have nothing to apologize for ! i love them, saber ! thank you ! they all look delicious and i totally get why you can’t pick just one. i’d love to try all of them. ” and she wasn’t just saying that to make her feel better either. indeed, she could see that the SABER actually had placed such consideration in choosing them for her, not to mention that she actually went out to get these for her birthday. that alone was more than enough to make her beyond happy.

               “ let’s eat them together ! i can make some tea to go with these. which one do you want to try first ? ” she grinned brightly. it’s been so long since she had such a delightful birthday. and after all, she couldn’t help but feel that the cake would taste a whole lot better if she could share it with the KING OF KNIGHTS. a hand reached out to take the blonde’s, giving it a squeeze as her gaze softened.

               “ really ... i love them. thank you so much for getting these for my birthday. it means the world to me, like you have no idea. thank you ... saber. ”

Her arms swept upwards, bringing a simple-fashioned cloak above his head. Allowing the velvet fabric to wrap around Mordred's frame, a gentle smile graced upon the King's lips as ocean eyes softened at the sight of her son. The robe was of an identical fashion to Artoria's but instead, it was red-- a colour that suited him more rather than blue. ❝ Merry Christmas, my son. ❞

For once, Mordred didn’t hide his blush, didn’t hide what some part of himself still considered shameful from his Father. Instead, his hands came up to gently touch the fabric, suddenly feeling a warmth spread inside of him that had nothing to do with the temperature or even the cloak itself. Frame shaking almost as much as his hands were, he offered Artoria a trembling smile.

“Thank you,” he managed, voice hardly above a whisper.

A strawberry cake was placed upon the table as gloved digits reached into her bag, retrieving a tiny black box from within the abysmal amount of presents that were meant to be given out. Artoria flips open her gift to reveal a shiny silver pendant, the jewel was in a shape of a primrose-- its petals a luminous white and the core, golden. ❝ They say that a primrose symbolises eternal love, Lady Guinevere. With this, I wish you a Merry Christmas. ❞

                                        Christmas 2018

The first that had caught her eye — other than Artoria, herself — was the strawberry cake that had not been touched. Not even the slightest nibble on the immaculate cake. The second was how the king of knights had chosen to visit her among her many (far more deserving) people of Chaldea, such as the children, or had she visited them already?

Her curiosity ended when the king had revealed the tiny box and the present inside. Her voice caught as Artoria explained why she had chosen this particular flower to give to her, preserved as a pendent. She took the box gingerly, looking at the pendant closely.

“My Lord, I —” she closed the box but kept it tight in her hand, then moved to close the distance between them, throwing her arms over her shoulder and kissing her cheek. “Thank you, so much.”

   When they woke, there was no war. There was no grail. There were no regrets. It was only the two of them, and eyes that reflected the same future. A tomorrow together, a tomorrow stronger. Hearing her groggy words simply affirmed that which he had sensed the night prior. She, in all of her awareness, most likely noticed it as well. 

   ❛ I believe it would be a habit we both deserve. ❜ Still matching her gaze, Jaune inched closer to her and pulled her into his chest. He wanted her to feel his heart, and how calm it was, how certain it felt. His breaths, too, were steady and confident. Even if she became uncertain, Jaune would be the a rope for her to grasp on to, a length of faith. If Jaune were to lose his way, it would be up to Artoria to mend his spirit and remind him of him.    Like binary stars, the two would balance one another in this crazy universe.

Arthur quickly went from kindly cheerfulness to a bashful mess, red taking his cheeks in no time at all.

For a few moments, he is silent. Then, slowly, his hand sliiides over atop her own.
