"Upon this a question arises: Whether it be better to be loved than feared or feared than loved? I know the answer now. I will be feared."
Today, my friend released their final book of their book trilogy "The Impavidus Cycle"! I couldn't be more proud! :) ♥ Here's a piece I made for their zine "Beloved, Always"

Calling all Impavidus Cycle fans!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The pieces I made for the ImpCycle zine are now available as digital wallpapers for your phone!
You can get them in my Ko-fi shop here
Also, if you haven't read the Impavidus Cycle by @i-m-p-a-v-i-d-u-s, you are seriously missing out on one of the best trilogies I have read! It is a deeply impactful story about finding where you belong and those who really care about you, and what it means to hold on to hope and love when all seems lost.
You can get the Impavidus Cycle Trilogy by M.A. Vice here

Speaking of Birthright! I’m super excited to share a sneak peek of my illustration for the Impavidus Cycle fanzine!
The zine comes out in december with the release of Impavidus by M.A Vice ( @i-m-p-a-v-i-d-u-s ). That also means there’s plenty of time for you to go read the first two books in the trilogy: Birthright, and Nightfall!

Book Review of Birthright--Impavidus Cycle Book 1 by M.A. Vice.
This was a really great book! There's so much about it I love, and the story is suuuuper engaging. I especially liked the beginning because it's unlike any book I've ever read before. The main character, Albtraum (which I pronounce Alb-tray-um. Not sure if it's supposed to be pronounced that way or not, but it sounds cool so I went with it. And it also kinda looks like "I'll b-tray 'em" which is one of the main character's worries so I really liked that) …. er, anyway. Albtraum "wakes" and discovers he's the son of a daemon. He doesn't remember anything before that point, but his dad (who lives in his mind at the moment) wants him to do lots of murders to increase his power. And it's… Cool. You have this main character who is the antagonist for EVERYONE ELSE in the world for a hot minute (the span of 4 years, I think) until the seeds of doubt are planted and he starts to wonder if maybe killing everyone isn't the best thing to do.
The characters all have unique, interesting voices and are clearly defined through their actions, hobbies, and preferences. I feel for them. I like some and distrust others. I am shocked by revelations and irritated (in a good way!) by certain decisions. The author knows how to write and develop characters for sure.
I also liked the epic feel of this story. I don't know what you would really call this, because it's not URBAN fantasy, but it does take place on an alternate reality version of our own earth, although it's really impossible to tell if it's in the past or a post-dystopian future. I like that. It really could be either. Or neither! Maybe it's just an alternate universe where daemons exist.
Awesome setting, perfect amount of description, great, believable dialogue.
There are a few issues I had, but they were only enough for me to take off one star, 'cuz I liked the story so much.
Especially in the first few chapters, there are a lot of words repeated. Even though they're common words, them being used within one line of each other made things a little repetitive.
My own gripe: I'm not a fan of love triangles. This one is relatively short, but I just don't personally like them.
Almost everyone seems to love Albtraum immediately. It works with the setting, for the most part, but the fawning can get a little uncomfortable.
There's a part of the book I can't really talk about because of spoilers, but it involves the relationship between Mianna and Albtraum. I feel as if it moved too fast.
The end of the book seems really long after the climax. After I finished what felt like the most exciting part of the book, I still had 40 minutes left to read, and I'm a fast reader.
Other than that, I really enjoyed it, and I'm looking forward to book 2!

Merry Christmas to me, three highly anticipated indie fantasy books that all accidentally happen to have red covers. (I've already read the ARC of Bleeding Heart but the other two will be completely fresh reads.)

That means a lot, thank you! <3
I have yet to be able to read @elizmanderson's The Remarkable Retirement of Edna Fisher but I'm really hype to do so and that's one of the first ones that comes to mind when I think of a Tumblr writer, since it was literally inspired by a Tumblr post.
Also gotta give a shoutout to @i-m-p-a-v-i-d-u-s's Impavidus Cycle, which just wrapped up and has become one of my favorite fantasy series this year.
let’s make a list of tumblr writers whose books we should be supporting

3 and 4! And any others you wanna answer. :)
3. What were your top five books of the year?
I read plenty of good books this year! The favorites were hard to narrow down. But check out all this quality.
Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey took me years to read, but it was worth every bit. The intrigue! The relationships! Most of all, the loving way it was told! An absolute classic.
To Shape a Dragon's Breath by Moniquill Blackgoose is fantastic, and not only because it saved me from the aftermath of reading Fourth Wing. It's the semi-historical, semi-scientific dragon riding book I never knew I needed.
Dune Messiah by Frank Herbert was even more coconut bonkers than I had dared to hope. It's NUTS. The plots. The insanity. The questionable romances. I can't wait for the film now.
The Crown Tower by Michael J Sullivan was a gift from a friend that I read in one (1) afternoon. I was that excited about it. I'd seen fanart of Riyria floating around and found it so compelling. And I was RIGHT.
Through Wolf's Eyes by Jane Lindskold is a sword-and-shield fantasy about a young woman raised by wolves. Truly, there's no better or more indulgent premise than this. It spoke to me.
4. Did you discover any new authors that you love this year?
I did find several! I truly love supporting indie authors encountered by chance and being rewarded with gems.
M.A. Vice has written a fun and compelling fantasy trilogy called The Impavidus Cycle. A feral young man who takes lives to feed his demonic father is met with kindness for the first time—but these kind people need him to fulfill a cosmic purpose. Vice has a really clean writing style and a good, old-school-feeling pace. It welcomes the reader, you know? It's just solid storytelling!
I had already read some samples on F. Malbeck's website before I got their book, so I was already pumped. Their debut novel is set in a fantastical world where fae bloodlines and powers are running thin, taken over by a human empire. Who doesn't love a story about the collision of the old and the new, especially if they start kissing? Malbeck's sets a beautiful, otherworldly scene. Magic feels deep and mysterious here, with its own will. I can't wait for sequels.
I have only read one novella by Jameson Hollybrook, but I'm this:
Tumblr media
It was SO much fun. Yes, I absolutely want my sexy adventures to have fae and monsters and vampires and gods of death. Hollybrook is so wise in the ways of having a great time!!

A preview of the piece I did for the zine @i-m-p-a-v-i-d-u-s is releasing alongside the 3rd (and final) book in THE IMPAVIDUS CYCLE! The zine was a reward for Kickstarter backers and I was super excited for the chance to participate in it! 🤩
I drew Adremallach, who is introduced in book two: Birthright, and became a quick favourite of mine! He’s a shadran–a race who live in the dark world, and I just love their designs 😔✊

Firstly, thanks to everybody who recced me Unseelie. I'm happy this book is this known already. Unfortunately, it was one of the few already on my list (along with Vespertine and A Wizard Alone - Millennium Edition).
Secondly I LOVE Ada Hoffman's list and am slowly working my way through it. Ngl, I was hoping for a short cut here. 🙈 There is a lot of sci-fi there.
Thirdly, THANK YOU for those two recs. 🥰 Finding adult high fantasy with autistic protags is a nightmare. But if it means reading guy protags, I will do it. I seem relate much better to autistic traits than to gender traits, as I found out lately.
More books?!? 👀 If it is (adult) fantasy, I'm game. Not fond of dystopia and urban fantasy (detectives/crime are not my thing). Also, the happier the end the better. 😅
The next titles on my to-get list are The Deep by Rivers Solomon and The Impavidus Cycle (though that is, once again, YA.)
I think I can give up on high fantasy with enby autistic protags on the ace spectrum. 😭 (I guess I just found my writing niche...🤔)
Reasons I specified high fantasy:
I love it
I plan to hold a presentation on autsitic protags in fantasy in autumn and it's a high fantasy environment
I love magic
portal fantasies are out of style 😔
“there are no books about….” yes there are. you’re bad at finding books.
