New Zealand wants extradition of Canadian drug smuggler Joshua Rahman from Fiji
A Canadian man found guilty in Fiji of possessing cocaine worth $31m is likely to be extradited to New Zealand to face more drug charges.
Joshua Aziz Rahman, 26, was found in possession of the drugs in 2019, at his father’s home near Suva.
His father, Tallat Rahman, is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence in Auckland after he was caught smuggling methamphetamine from Mexico into New Zealand for the Comancheros gang.
During Joshua Rahman’s arrest in Fiji, police found 39 bars of white powder in his father’s bedroom, later confirmed to be 39.5 kilograms of cocaine.
Joshua Rahman was found guilty at the Suva High Court on Friday by Justice Daniel Goundar. He will be sentenced on April 22.
The offence carried a minimum sentence of 20 years imprisonment.
Rahman, who was in Fiji visiting his father, is also wanted in New Zealand on four charges relating to the importation of methamphetamine.
According to his lawyer, Devanesh Sharma, Joshua Rahman has only been to New Zealand once – on December 21, 2018, for 10 days.
He lives in Canada with his mother, but travels frequently to Fiji to visit his father.
Sharma said Immigration New Zealand applied for his extradition on April 6, however an arrest warrant for his charges in this country have been active since 2020.
Sharma said he was disappointed that Kiwi authorities waited until the end of his Fijian trial to apply for extradition.
The extradition hearing will be heard on April 30, after his sentencing.
Sharma said his client has already been found guilty and will serve a prison sentence, so there was no need to extradite him.
“NZ authorities can withdraw their application until before the hearing, so we will wait to see how it plays out.”
New Zealand Police, the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said they were unable to respond to questions from Stuff, as Joshua Rahman’s case remains before the Fijian courts.

Citizenship Australia - Exploring the Fastest Way to Australian Citizenship
Tumblr media
Becoming an Australian citizen is a significant milestone for individuals who have made Australia their home. Aspiring to attain citizenship often raises questions about the fastest route to achieve this goal. While the journey to Australian citizenship requires time and effort, there are certain pathways that can expedite the process.
One common route is through Citizenship Australia by descent, available to individuals who have at least one parent who is an Australian citizen. This method can streamline the application process, as it leverages familial ties.
Another option is through the Australian citizenship by conferral, which is open to permanent residents who have met specific criteria. By fulfilling residency requirements and passing the citizenship test, applicants can fast-track their citizenship journey.
It's important to note that individual circumstances may vary, and it's advisable to consult with immigration experts or the Australian Department of Home Affairs to understand the most suitable and efficient pathway for acquiring Citizenship in Australia.
