Red leaning yet purple, massive population. Then there’s a lot of rural desert area. It is voter suppression that keeps that state red. With its minority populations, the younger families in the major cities, the hip young areas. It should be blue, if not a close 50-50. Paxton was on Steve Bannons show in 2022 BRAGGING, LAUGHING, with Bannon on how he had taken the votes of 2 MILLION Texas voters away from them right before the 2020 election saying “Texas could have been one of those Biden states”. That’s the Republican Party!!! That’s Project 2025 and the 2nd Trump term. That is the microcosm of America if we don’t stop voting against our own interests (I’m looking at you MAGA) and start voting for those who will actually represent you and do their job according to the Constitution.

What kind of America does an 18 year old hopeful mother DIE because she’s having a miscarriage and can’t get the help she needs. Another young woman in Tx, 23, wanted a sibling for her 2 year old, at 16 weeks there’s a problem, the fetus dies. This 23 years old mother gets sepsis, has 40 hours of excruciating pain in a Texas emergency room as doctors look on and can’t do anything to save this 23 year old mom. Ramona Gabriel Ibañez Madrazo [Spn OC @sugarandice3]

Physical Description: Ramona is tall for a Hispanic woman, standing at around 5’6”. Her dark hair is thick and long (hitting mid-back), always pulled back in a simple braid or up into a bun. Her skin is olive toned and deeply bronzed with darker sunspots sprinkled on her face, shoulders, neck, and chest from years of riding in her convertible. Dark russet brown eyes are set into a round, weathered face decorated by crows feet and hounddog lines. Ramona also has a lean body with wide shoulders and comparatively narrower hips. After years of fighting ghosts and monsters, she has collected many scars, but the biggest one is a set of claw marks running down her back from the bottom of her left shoulder blade to the cinch of her waist from a werewolf attack that nearly killed her and turned her husband. Her style tends to be modest and muted, even though she prefers vibrant colors. Even though they remind her of home and heritage, they stand out too much for a hunter’s needs so she goes for neutral tones in blue-collar styles. She also wears a pendant around her neck of her patron saint, Gabriel the angel. It normally stays tucked under her shirt unless she’s praying, thoughtful, or anxious. Personality: Ramona is a protector, first and foremost. The drive to protect others from the fate she suffered is partly what fuels her hunting career and keeps her going despite the darkness and death she faces on a regular basis. The other thing that has prevented her from becoming hardened and cynical is her devout Catholic faith. It provides her with a weighted sense of joy and justice that help anchor her throughout each job. Although she’s considered a bit of an oddity by her peers, Ramona is also well respected by most because of these differences. She loves people, but tends to take a long time to bond with them. Ramona doesn’t have a lot of personal relationships, but that doesn’t mean she treats people with any less love than if she did. She is sharply maternal in nature which is very strange in this line of work, but not entirely unwelcome by the hunters she has partnered up with.

Ramona is a planner; very routine oriented and extremely careful on every hunt. No matter how simple the job, she always takes the time to create a plan of attack along with a plan for escape in case things go wrong. She is as “lawful good” as a hunter can get, refusing to steal or cheat for a living. While this does mean that she sleeps in her car and skips a meal from time to time, she doesn’t mind. She is a very disciplined and skillful woman, which makes her an excellent hunter. Personal History: She was born to first generation immigrants and grew up in south west Texas where her father was a ranch hand and her mother sold lovely hand-made rosaries. Ramona was the second of six children, with an older sister, two younger sisters and two younger brothers (Sister, Ramona, Brother, Sister, Sister, Brother.) Her childhood was happy and largely uneventful. She got married at 22 and was set to have a happy life until a couple years later when she and her husband took a trip to Houston. It was there that they were attacked by a werewolf. It caught her and was going to turn her when her husband intervened, body slamming it to the ground. Ramona was too injured to really run away, but luckily a hunter, who was tracking the monster, rescued her and got her away before it was too late. He rushed her to the hospital and stayed by her side until she woke up. He told her what his job was and took the time to explain what had happened. Unfortunately he had to break the news to her that her husband was most likely dead or, worse, turned into a werewolf. She was discharged from the hospital the next morning, but the hunter wouldn’t let her go home just yet. He was worried that if her husband was still alive she would be the next target so he left her in his motel room with a gun loaded with a single silver bullet. Hours dragged by and young Ramona got restless and decided to go on a short walk to clear her head. She wandered around and around until night fell. She was on her way back to the motel and crossing through an alley when she was ambushed. There stood her husband, snarling and monstrous. There was a brief fight and chase but Ramona eventually gunned him down. ater, the hunter found her grieving over his body. He would take her back to the motel and offer to take her home, but Ramona refused. She wanted to know more about this life and the supernatural world around her. The hunter was originally hesitant, but she was quite instant so he made her an offer. He would give her two years to get her affairs in order and then find her again and see if she felt the same way. Fast forward a couple years after the investigation and the funeral and the hunter came back and Ramona went with him. They spent several years traveling together and would eventually get married. They would have a couple decades of happy hunting before they meet Quinn.

Joel Weinberg: The Relative Heroes was a six issue run that came out a couple of decades ago featuring a group of newly orphaned kids and the youngest's babysitter. sam chung is an 'illegal' chinese immigrant living in china town, nyc, who was brought to the us as a younger child by his (later) neglectful and abusive mother. he has a younger sister, hannah, who is the only us citizen in the family and therefore is the only one able to hold a secure job. he works odd jobs until he uses old knowledge from his childhood in china to become a vigilante named blindspot. he's horrible at it at first until he meets daredevil, the hero he took inspiration from in the first place. the two work together while his mother grows more involved in a cult who had stolen power from an ancient cult with ancient magic. he works his way out of it, being the icon that he is and confronts his mother. he later loses his eyesight trying to protect civilians from his soon-to-be nemesis, muse, who plucks his eyes out when daredevil comes to save him. his character is cool as fuck in the sense that daredevil comics as a whole does not steer away from political topics and the significance of sam as an 'illegal' immigrant and a vigilante trying to make chinatown better in a comic which focuses on a disabled (blind) man who is both a lawyer and vigilante who swears to make his town better both through the law and outside of it is important. to me. if you don't vote for him you're shunning a very specific kind of representation both when it comes to race, immigrant culture and survivors of abusive parents.

Donald Trump’s first mention of illegal immigration in his speech accepting the Republican Party’s nomination for president was how he turned to look at a chart of border chaos at the exact right moment to avoid a bullet fired by would-be assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks that grazed his ear instead of killing him. Other than his account of surviving an attempt on his life—the most serious one against a sitting president or candidate since John Hinckley Jr. shot President Reagan in 1981—his acceptance speech was pure Trump: Part rambling, funny, boring, and focused on his favorite subject: complaining about illegal immigration and crime. [...]

Trump’s speech focused on some heinous crimes committed by illegal immigrants, like the murders of Jocelyn Nungaray in Houston, Rachel Morin in Maryland, and Laken Riley in Georgia. These criminals should be punished to the fullest extent of the law, just like all criminals should be. But they offer no justification for Trump’s plan to launch the “largest deportation operation in the history of our country” if reelected.

Such a brutal domestic campaign would likely raise—not lower—crime rates. Why?

For starters, undocumented immigrants are less likely to be criminals than native-born Americans. The best data on this comes from the conservative border state of Texas, which is the only state that keeps decent statistics on criminality by immigration status. Undocumented immigrants were 37% less likely to be convicted of homicide in Texas than native-born Americans in 2022, the last year for which reliable data are available. Legal immigrants are 63% less likely to be convicted of homicide. Those patterns are similar for all crimes in the state, but those are less reliable. Immigrants are coming to the U.S., and some of them are criminals, but they are bringing less crime than if they behaved like native-born Americans.

One counterargument is that illegal immigrants commit many crimes, but they aren't convicted because they flee back across the border. This is unlikely because police clearance rates, the percentage of crimes solved by police resulting in an arrest, are no lower in states with many undocumented immigrants for homicide and other violent or property crimes. If illegal immigrants were committing many more crimes than they were being convicted of, police clearance rates would be lower in states with many illegal immigrants—but they’re not. But there are two other ways that a mass deportation campaign would backfire and likely raise crime rates.

One: It would redirect state, local, and federal law enforcement toward identifying and removing illegal immigrants rather than solving or deterring real crimes. Locations that aggressively enforce federal immigration laws don’t experience a lower crime (but most of those areas have small populations of illegal immigrants, so the negative effects on other criminal law enforcement wouldn't necessarily show up because massive resources don’t have to be diverted away from prosecuting other crimes). Two: Simply by removing undocumented immigrants who, as a population, are less crime-prone than native-born Americans, the nationwide crime rate would be higher than it otherwise would be. The deportation campaign wouldn’t necessarily expose any individual residing in the U.S. to a greater risk of being a victim of a crime, but, the point is, it wouldn't Make America Safe Again.

Donald Trump’s mass deportation proposals are not only fascistic and immoral, but it also won’t make America any safer and also waste finite police resources.

Such proposals are based on the myth that undocumented immigrants commit crimes at rates higher than US citizens. The opposite is true.

In fact, these proposals are lunacy in leagues with the internment of the Japanese-Americans during WWII.

Today, June 1, kicks off Pride Month (and also incidentally marks the third anniversary of the start of this series), and I thought it appropriate to examine the amazing accomplishments of Texas civil rights leader, attorney, and Congresswoman Barbara Charline Jordan.

Born in a poor Houston neighborhood in 1936, Jordan discovered an early aptitude for languages and oration, and also debate. She graduated from Texas Southern University in 1956, then obtained her LL.B. from Boston University School of Law in 1959. She was admitted to both the Massachusetts and Texas bars in 1960, then began practicing law in Houston --at the time only the third African American woman to be so licensed. An outspoken supporter of John F. Kennedy's presidential campaign, she herself entered politics and unsuccessfully ran for state representative in 1962 and again in 1964. Two years later her fortunes changed, however, and in 1966 she became the first African American elected to the Texas Senate in 1966.

Jordan's standing as a fellow Texan Democrat endeared her to then-President Lyndon Johnson and in many respects she became LBJ's protégée. In 1972 Jordan ran for Congress for Texas's 18th District, and unseated the incumbent Republican, becoming the first woman --of any race-- elected to Congress from that state.

Jordan's political career accomplishments extend far beyond this biography's available space, but among the high points include her aggressive sponsorship of the Voting Rights Act of 1975 (an extension of the more famous 1965 measure), and the Equal Rights Amendment in 1977. Also significantly she served on the House Judiciary Committee during the Nixon impeachment hearings, and her speech at the 1976 Democratic National Convention is widely regarded as one of the best keynote speeches in modern history; her presence in many ways even eclipsing that of the party's nominee, Jimmy Carter. (She would return as a keynote speaker for the 1992 Democratic National Convention.)

Jordan retired from politics in 1978 and became a professor at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas in Austin. In 1993 Jordan was the first recipient of the Nelson Mandela Award for Health and Human Rights. A year later she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Bill Clinton for her trailblazing work. That same year Jordan was also named the chair of the U.S. Commission on Immigration Reform. Jordan died from complications from pneumonia in January of 1996, and is buried at the Texas State Cemetery in Austin --significantly breaking barriers even in death as the first-ever black woman to be interred there. While Jordan never explicitly acknowledged her personal sexual orientation in public, she was open about her life partner of nearly 30 years, educational psychologist Nancy Earl.

Her legacy continues through the Jordan Rustin Coalition (named for her and for Civil Rights organizer Bayard Rustin --see Lesson #05 in this series): a non-profit advocacy group working to empower Black same-gender loving, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals and families; and to promote equal marriage rights and to advocate for fair treatment of everyone without regard to race, sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.

the illegitimate child of a wealthy Houston lawyer, Mark Birch, and a Vietnamese immigrant he was having an affair with. Genevieve was adopted into the Birch family when she was a toddler, after Mark and his wife, Stephanie, had trouble getting pregnant

a few years later, Stephanie and Mark were able to conceive. Genevieve did not welcome having younger siblings–she feared that this meant she was replaceable.

natural intelligence plus a terror of failure caused her to overachieve in school, always on honor roll and in the most prestigious extra curriculars. if she wasn’t perfect she was nothing and Genevieve Birch refused to be nothing. this pattern of success eventually cemented her as her father’s favorite

she discovered she was a lesbian in 9th grade and immediately became “boy crazy” to compensate for this perceived flaw. this obviously did not make her straight but the perceived promiscuity was a source of tension with her family

she fell pregnant as a senior in high school. the father of the baby wanted her to marry him and she wanted to abort. Genevieve took the middle route and gave the baby up for adoption. this is one of her greatest regrets (and also a wanted connection!)

despite her GPA slipping during her pregnancy, Genevieve graduated on time and even made it into Rice for her undergrad. she got to know and accept herself once she was away from the stifling influence of her family, and started going by Viva

Viva met a woman named Heather Kędzierski and fell head over heels–allowed herself to fall head over heels. Heather felt the same way and the two quickly moved in together

the two had grand plans after the graduated–they were going to move to NYC, Heather was going to become a world-renowned sculptor and Viva would be a wealthy doctor.

the first was easy enough–Viva got accepted into NYU med school (but not Cornell or Columbia–Viva was as devastated by the situation as Heather was amused) Heather got a security job at an art gallery and soon started selling her pieces as well

it was a beautiful life. a charmed life. Viva was able to be her full, intense self and Heather was there to soften her edges. Heather could be as raw and vulnerable as she needed to and Viva would protect her

in 2011, a month after Viva started her residency as a cardiologist and a month before New York legalized gay marriage, Heather was diagnosed with cancer. it was fast moving, terminal. Viva dropped her residency and stayed home to nurse Heather full time. 

when Heather passed, Viva was broken. she didn’t want to be a doctor anymore, not when there would be patients like Heather, patients who couldn’t be healed, only comforted. against almost everyone’s advice she switched her specialty to forensic pathology. can’t grieve for dying patients when they come to you dead already

Viva’s bullheadedness and cold ambition proved to be an asset when working with the NYPD. corruption may have been an unstoppable force but Viva was an immovable object, and she quickly gained a reputation as one of the most competent and trustworthy members of the forensics department

Climate-denying Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is making it more difficult to rebuild parts of his state devastated by major hurricanes because of his so called "war on woke".

Immigrant workers from across the US raced to Florida to help rebuild after Hurricane Ian devastated the region. But now, nearly a year later and days after another major hurricane hit, some of those workers say this time they’re staying home. Saket Soni, whose nonprofit Resilience Force advocates for thousands of disaster response workers, says there’s one clear reason behind the shift: Florida’s new immigration law, which Gov. Ron DeSantis has championed. In a survey Resilience Force conducted over several months this summer, Soni says more than half of the nonprofit organization’s roughly 2,000 members said they would not travel to Florida to help with hurricane recovery efforts because of the law. And in the aftermath of Hurricane Idalia, he says, many remain concerned. “They felt very fearful,” says Soni, the organization’s executive director. “No amount of money would be worth it if it meant they would be incarcerated or deported.” Normally, Soni says Resilience Force workers wouldn’t think twice before heading to a disaster zone. The group is made up largely of immigrants, many of whom are undocumented, Soni says. And much like migrant workers who follow harvest seasons and travel from farm to farm, they crisscross the US to help clean up and rebuild when disaster strikes. Soni says many of them see the skills they’ve honed over years of responding to major storms as a calling, in addition to a means of supporting their families. “Sadly,” he says, “you have all of these workers sitting in Houston and in New Orleans, coming to our offices, asking us, is there a chance this law will be repealed? Is there any chance they could go?” [ ... ] Soni, Resilience Force’s executive director, says he watched a similar scene unfold a week after the law passed. “I remember being there one afternoon and talking to a worker at lunchtime. … And he, quite literally, while he was talking to me was packing his tools into his pickup truck and leaving with his crew.” It was an early sign, Soni says, of harms caused by the immigration law. “It’s really undermining the ability of Floridians to recover after a hurricane,” he says. “It’s upending the possibility of homes being rebuilt.”
