Your vision couldn’t help but linger every time it drifted over your hands gripping the steering wheel. The immense weight the sight of your bare ring finger lifted off your shoulders was so overwhelming that you found yourself fighting tears from blurring the road before you. 

The sun was beginning to set as you had been driving all day long, not stopped for even a second to let the gravitas sink in of what you’d done at the crack of dawn. 

The fear of Preston stirring from his slumber and finding you in the midst of sneaking out still hadn’t settled within your gut. Your paranoid brain still compelled you to check the rear-view mirror every couple of seconds just in case the sleek sportscar of your former fiancé would appear.

You had finally done what he had drilled into your mind you weren’t capable of. You’d left him for good. 

Equipped with only a small backpack of your belongings, the last thing you’d done before sneaking out of the apartment had been to toss the ring he had so insistently forced upon your finger into the trash. 

Ripping you out of your cloudy thoughts, your car suddenly began to cough like a mythical monster that was dying. 

“Oh shit…” you felt the vehicle begin to slow as ominous smoke started to billow out from under the hood. Mindful of the bushy pine trees framing the road, you guided it to the edge just in time before it gave out. 

Stepping out with an exhausted sigh, you promptly cracked the front open to take a look, though what you saw within didn’t soothe your worries as all of the fumes oozing out only made the broken engine look like that much more of a mess. 

“Fucking great,” you mumbled heatedly, fiercely slamming the hood shut in an effort to relieve some of your abundant stress. Curving back around, you swung the passenger side open and rummaged for your phone, though when you located it, the only solution it flashed you was a blinking red battery icon before the screen went completely black, “seriously?” 

Not knowing if you were about to scream or burst into tears, you chucked it back inside before hurling your spine against the side of the car, leaning against it as you cursed up at the grey sky. 

Was this the universe showing its true bias? You’d hoped that was the one thing money couldn’t buy, but perhaps you were wrong, just like he always said you were. Perhaps it would be best if you went back to the city. His reaction towards a stunt like this couldn’t be that bad compared to what you had endured before, could it? 

The sound of another vehicle cresting the thicket on the rural road caught your ears and you turned your head to see a navy-blue truck appear.

Your hand shot up to wave it down before you could even ponder the action. Fearing that it was a lost cause by the speed the driver was going at, it caught you by surprise as it suddenly came to a halt a ways in front of you. 

“Are you alright, ma'am?” the driver asked as he slammed his door shut behind him. The tall man certainly looked like the type to call the area his home. Dark beard scraggly and hair in unkept waves long enough to tickle the furrow lines decorating his forehead, his wide palm traced the lines of the truck as he made his way towards you.

“I, um,” your eyes briefly flickered to the bundles of firewood needly stacked in the back of the pickup, “my car broke down and my phone conveniently also decided to run out of battery, so, uh, could I perhaps borrow yours just a moment? I just need it to make one call, that’s it.”

Eyeing your busted vehicle a moment, his low timbre then rumbled out once more, “sure,” as he reached into his pocket and fished out his telephone.

“Thank you so much,” seizing it, you swiftly clicked it to life, “you have no idea what a lifesaver you are–, oh fuck,” your vision zeroed in on the lack of bars in the uppermost corner, “of course there’s no fucking services out here,” your eyes briefly screwed shut and your jaw clenched in an effort not to scream, “it’s fine, it’s fine! I’ll just walk then!” you tried not the throw it as you handed the phone back to the helpful stranger, “I’m sorry that you had to stop for nothing, but thank you anyways.”

Swinging your door open to yank out your stuff, the stranger’s feet stayed fast, “what direction are you headed?” 

“Dunbrook,” you answered as your body folded to reach your tossed telephone.

“You wanna catch a ride?” he unexpectedly offered, causing you to bump your head on the roof of the car.

“Ow–, what?” you blinked back at him through the windshield as your hand shot up to rub the top of your now sore head, “no, I couldn’t… I–, uh, I kinda recognise this area, the town is not too far from here, so I can walk, it’s fine.”

“Yeah, but it’ll properly still take you all night. Please, it’s no bother, I’m headed in that direction anyways.” 

Gnawing at your bottom lip, you slowly retracted out of the vehicle, “you sure?” 

“Yeah,” he nodded, attempting a faint smile in order to soften his gruff and intimidating features. 

“Alright,” swinging your backpack on you slammed your busted car shut, “thank you.”

Sliding into the passenger seat, you clicked on the seatbelt and slotted your bag between your legs. Fiddling tensely with the straps for a moment, it dawned on you how your sleeves were still rolled all the way up to your elbows from when you had checked under the hood. Pulse instantly picking up and thumping in your ears, you hastily tugged them back down to cover the lavender bruises peaking out. 

Had he noticed?

Hearing the door slam to your left, being too caught up in your own mess, it only caused your form to jump in the seat.

Trying to play it off as nothing, you attempted a casual, “I’m Y/n by the way,” though your voice came out much more strangled than you’d intended. 

Catching your flickering eye a moment before turning the key, he likewise enlightened, “Pete.” 

Your bottom lip didn’t escape the prison of your teeth the entire ride, gnawing subconsciously at it as you purposely stare out at the wild flora you passed in order to not look at the advantageous stranger. 

Though after you passed the crooked sign welcoming you back to your small hometown, Pete’s gruff voice broke the silence.

“So, where can I drop you off?”

“The inn,” you turned your head to inform him, “the Lilac Inn, if you know where that is.”

“Yeah, I know it,” he nodded, sucking in a knowing breath as if he didn’t need any more information to figure you out, “so you’re a tourist? One of those nature people who come out here to hike or something?”

“Not exactly,” was all the explanation you offer as you watched the familiar scenery come into view. 

Dunbrook. To call it a town was very generous indeed as the whole population could properly fit under the same roof if they really wanted to, and they often did. The rolling fields of wildlife that surrounded the village also divided and broke up the infrastructure of the old settlement, causing most of the homes and businesses to not all the clustered together as you had grown accustomed to seeing after moving to a metropolis as vast as New York. 

Every familiar structure rolling by evoked memories long ago buried and forgotten. The corner where you fell learning how to ride a bike. The quaint general store where you once stole a lollipop, walked for all of 48 seconds before turning right back and apologising to the owner with tears in your eyes. But most of all, the large Victorian structure at the bottom of the tiny town by far held the fondest of memories in your heart. 

The dust puffed up around the truck as you rolled down the narrow dirt road, the bushy lilac trees that flourished all over the property haven not quite yet come into bloom, yet still forewarned your destination that already peaked over the tops. 

“Here it is,” Pete exhaled as the car came to a stop before the vast veranda, “the Lilac Inn.” 

Eyes glued to your childhood home, you stepped out of the truck, “thank you,” slamming the door shut, you turned to add awkwardly through the rolled down window, “and also thank you for not turning out to be an axe murderer or something,” a nervous laugh swiftly bubbling out at the notion.

Glancing back at your bumbling form, he simply flashed you a tight-lipped smile and said, “you have a good trip, ma'am.” 

“You too–, I mean, you have a good, uhm, rest of your life,” you fumbled as your feet slowly backed up, “it was nice meeting you, Pete.” 

“Yeah, you too,” he just managed to reply before you spun your mortified flush away from his stare and scurried up the steps of the porch. 

Pushing the creaky, stained glass adorn front door open, you tiptoed inside. 

The lighting dim and the atmosphere nothing short of comforting, a smile finally bloomed upon your lips as you let out the breath you’d been holding for who knows how long. 

Peeking around the corner into one of the sitting rooms, you only spotted one patron sitting by the small round table next to the crackling fireplace, working away at a puzzle. Either the others had gone to bed already or this fellow was the only one staying here. 

“Excuse me,” you gently interrupted from the archway, “would you happen to know where the owner, Harvey, is–”

Though before you managed to get out the remainder of the sentence, a bustle from the kitchen answered your question for you, “every time I forget to whisk long enough and every time I say it’s gonna be different, but this time I mean it!”

Sharing a knowing look with the guest, you chuckle, “never mind…” 

“This time I won't just stop when my arm feels like it’s gonna fall off,” even though it was clear he was talking to himself, his usual vibrato still carried, “oh no, no, you just wait and see how light and fluffy you turn out this time, cake!” 

Poking your head through the ajar door, you spotted the familiar greying man grumbling into the contents of the bowl he was furiously beating with a whisk. 

“Dad?”

Nearly jumping out of his skin, your father gasped, whisk jolting upright as he laid his eyes upon you, subsequently splattering some batter across the kitchen, back near the sink, “Y/n?” he exclaimed, his eyes growing to the size of saucers, “is that really you? Is my little baby girl really standing in my kitchen or is this a hallucination?”

“Hi,” your head tilted in a soft chuckle. 

Staring at you as if you were just a newborn puppy, “oh, come here, munchkin and give your pops a hug!” the moustachioed man’s arms went wide and pulled you in, dropping whisk still in his hand as he blubbered into your hair, “ah, I’ve missed you so much,” squeezing your form in the magical way that only parents could, “I haven’t heard from you in, well I don’t even know how long, that’s how long and if you ask me then that’s too long,” he pulled back, cupping your cheek as he gazed at you, “you don’t write, you don’t call.”

“Not true, I do write,” you corrected him light-heartedly, “and you don’t have a cellphone.” 

“Well, there’s the telephone out in reception, why would I need more?” he shrugged, lending you to then slip out of his grip, swiftly boosting your own form to hop onto one of the empty counters, “also, your last letter was 10 months ago.” 

“No, it wasn’t, was it?” you gasped, thinking back.

“You can check the date, they’re still in the cookie tin up there,” he gestured to one of the top shelves before reuniting the whisk in his grip with the large bowl on the table. 

Only briefly glancing up at the enamel box, you already knew that you didn’t wanna revisit them. However vague the letters were, which they always were, you were still certain that they’d have the power to send you right back there into Preston’s iron fist, even though you’d never even mentioned him once in all the years you’d been with him. They only ever really contained small talk and pleasantries, never about something so personal as to whom you were dating, but you also didn’t share at all as things took a turn for the worse, when you were in so deep that you felt like you couldn’t escape. Perhaps it was out of pride, perhaps it was to shield him from the truth, or maybe even in a way yourself, not admitting to the fiend you had welcomed into your own bed, creating some false reality as a coping mechanism. 

Averting your gaze, you then uttered softly, “I’m really sorry dad,” gliding your right thumb over the jagged edge of the counter as you gripped onto it with both fists.

“Ah, it’s fine,” he waved a hand, “you’re young, out there living your life. You shouldn’t have to check in with your father every few seconds. I am aware that you’re 29 after all. Although, you know I wouldn’t be a pose to just a little bit more…” he winked, playfully bumping the side of his hip against your shin before picking up the speed of the whisk once more, “so, did I forget it’s my birthday or did you just miss your old man?” his jovial glance flickered between you and the batter. 

“Can I stay here a while? I just need some place to,” lay low, “figure things out, you know?”

Whisk halting, his gaze upon you grew in concern, “of course you can, honey. Is everything okay? What’s wrong?”

“I’m okay, I just–, uh… needed a change,” not looking him in the eye, you spoke, “I don’t know to where or what I’m gonna do next, but I do know that I don’t wanna go back,” you felt a lump of emotion swell up in your throat, “and I won’t just stay here for free, I’ll pay you rent,” you tried to appease the stubborn sensation of being a nuance to everyone, even to your own kin, “though I don’t really have any money right now, so I’d have to get a job first, but that’s fine, I’ll figure something out–” 

“Oh, don’t be ridiculous,” your father cut you off, “you can stay here as long as you want, it never stopped being your home even when you moved away. Still keep your room exactly the same, just in case,” he offered you a warm smile, his silver moustache stretching wider, “how about you just give me a hand around here, huh?” 

“Alright,” you exhaled, “deal.”

His grin turning more mischievous, he then noted slyly, “you know I’ve always dreamed of you taking over this place one day, running the family business…” 

Rolling your eyes, you chuckled, “not this again…”

“Just think about, you could–”

“Dad, I’m not gonna take over the inn! Running a place like this isn’t what it used to be back when your parents opened it up. You might have always been dead set on taking over it, but I haven’t.”

“I know, I know,” he gracefully backed down again as he always did, “you want adventure, isn’t that what you called it when you went away for college?” 

Adventure… it was that kind of philosophy that had sent an innocent young girl into the arms of a devil…

When it comes to alternative energy, there's lots of great solutions. Everybody loves solar power, where you put out a bunch of expensive panels and just collect all the free money that falls from the sky. Most people love hydroelectricity, where you spin a wheel with water and then laugh all the way to the bank. What doesn't get a lot of respect is wind power, where you put a giant spinning thing super high up in the air, and then harvest power from the winds of fate.

We can spend all day guessing about why that is: I think it's the fear of heights, in the same way that vaccination campaigns have to overcome the "needles scary" instinct that has been drilled into us by Hollywood celebrities and that very stern lady who gave us a hepatitis jab in junior high. That said, if we did spend all day talking said shit, then I'd be late to my new job, which is selling expensive wind-power solutions to the city.

"Didn't we ban you from the property last month?" asks the nice city architect I am meeting with. He is partially correct, in that I was banned from a city council meeting after throwing fists when they threatened to take away my free parking (in a neighbourhood I don't live in, but has gradually become "overflow" for the 1975-1981 Pontiac collection.) However, today I am operating in my professional capacity, as a corporation: the Switch Centripetal Assets Multinational. We are here to sell things that spin in the wind, and save the Earth at the same time.

Despite the uphill battle, I successfully convince Mr. Nosey that I am in fact my own identical twin brother. I roll that confidence boost into a big sale: several dozen partially-broken Dana 30 axles, with an old hood welded on one end to catch the breeze, and an old alternator welded onto the other. Works like a charm, and can light almost an entire string of Christmas tree lights if you're currently experiencing a hurricane. A few weeks later, we've successfully sunk them into the ground and cashed a large cheque consisting entirely of government cheddar, and I'm on my way to pick up a bunch more shitty old Mopars.

The best part is, nobody has to be afraid of heights, unlike with my sloppy European competition. They're about five and a half feet tall, due to their origins as a truck axle. You can walk right up to these suckers and service them, though I strongly recommend ducking if the wind is really blowing. Still, if you get decapitated by it, that will at least convince the doubtful to instead be cautiously afraid of its immense power. Nothing better for advertising.

As they start walking side by side, molded to each other because Buck really can’t manage to stay fully upright, he can’t help but feel like he is still stuck in the moment they just left behind, preserved in amber and frozen in time while Eddie somehow managed to find a way out and keep going.

He has no idea what to do about that, possesses absolutely no higher brain functioning to even begin figuring out a solution to a problem that might not even be a problem, so to make himself feel better he blurts out, “You make everything blurry,” because for some reason it feels important Eddie knows that right now.

“Umm–” Eddie looks at him with big, wide eyes, so brown and large and framed by such pretty eyelashes. Buck kind of wants to cry about it.

Eddie’s hand tightens around Buck’s waist, the skin beneath Buck’s jacket and shirt dimpling wonderfully under the touch. “I think that would be the fault of the beer and margaritas.”

While in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves for 29 years, I thought I had seen some pretty stupid things the military was told by politicians to do. It always begins with politicians deciding the easiest, most sensible solution to a problem would have too much political baggage and cost them votes in the next election. So, they look for a politically expedient solution, one that is invariably very expensive and convoluted.

Attempting a Military Solution for a Political or Diplomat Problem—AGAIN!!!

In this vein, all too often, politicians turn to the U.S. military for a solution to a non-military problem. Then some A-type personality in the military presents a hair-brained idea to the politicians, probably never thinking that the idea would be accepted. Then it is accepted to get the politicians out of a jam, and the next thing you know is that the Rube Goldberg, crazy idea is being funded.

This unbelievable scenario is what has happened with getting humanitarian aid into Gaza for the starving survivors of the Israeli genocide of Gaza. Instead of U.S. President Joe Biden marking a red line in the Israel/Gaza/Egypt sand demanding that Israel allow into Gaza the miles of tractor-trailer loads of food and medicine that have been stalled for months at the Rafah border crossing, Biden's inept diplomatic team sent out a plea for help to the U.S. military

And the U.S. military, always looking for validation of its immense "capabilities," seized the opportunity to use one of its little-known assets—the Army's Joint Logistics Over the Shore, or JLOTS, system that provides bridging and water access capabilities—to help out the failed U.S. diplomatic efforts to get the U.S.'s "strongest ally in the Middle East" to end the starvation of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza by letting the massive truck convoys filled with food and medicines into Gaza.

Normally used to move military equipment across rivers where bridges have been blown up—many times by the U.S. military itself—and sometimes to transfer military equipment from a ship onto shore, the U.S. Army's small navy swung into action and began sailing to the Mediterranean in U.S. Army ships filled with barges that can be locked together to form landing docks and causeways.

Let Me Ramble for a Second

So I have been in a rut with actually writing for the past bit (life, work, school and all of that getting in the way), but I have not gone unplagued by my girls for a while.

I want to think about how Cinder and Winter treat one another when either of them are upset, angry, or in some mood other than their usual emotional stature--and how that applies to the pair of them. Their first real couple's fight especially where it wasn't over some ideology or on the battlefield but instead in their personal lives must have been a menace for the pair of them.

Like Cinder and Winter seem to have two very different kinds of volatile moods. Cinder seems to be more inclined to intense sudden anger which boils over into whatever else she does for a time. While Winter has a long term emotional stance where her anger is contained and builds and builds until something eventually pops that cork as it were. You have Cinder who is immensely emotional and Winter who is rationally oriented with their own triggers for response.

That of course extends to the pair of them having some very dynamic interactions when either of them are upset. Like Cinder going completely AWOL for a time from Winter, finding somewhere where she can 'explode' and get rid of all of that sudden anger. She needs that quick and fervent release instead of letting it sit in her, because it is caustic and she knows by this point it is also not the best thing to pop off on the people around her--especially Winter--even if suddenly demolishing a sparring bag or going to town on whatever combat training is not really the best solution either.

Where as Winter has that military mindset of press concerns down and down because speaking out is the opposite of what a good soldier and Schnee child does. Instead she's going to smash all of that angst quietly away forever until the aforementioned explosion occurs and she just resigns herself away from everything which could prolong that fire. I think the best way of doing that for Winter to her is her idea of throwing herself into her work or training or something where her mind can force itself to focus on something else.

Now when those two concepts come against each other I think would be intriguing. Because you now have the couple who thrives most when they're opposites are together now also being forced apart willingly by the pair of them. Whether the anger or angst is caused by the pair of them on one another, they throw themselves into their respective outlets.

The most interesting idea though is when that angst does come from the pair themselves. Like Cinder being obstinate toward Winter's planning of something, or Winter discounting something Cinder held in regard. Shouting from Cinder as a first measure of her trying to drain herself of this anger just sourcing a reason for Winter to respond like the analytic she is.

The sudden flash of emotion from Cinder about something and her moving to leave and do her venting being interrupted by Winter who is trying her best to deconstruct and understand what happened only giving way to Winter now being angry because Cinder is flashing suddenly at her--the two of them domino essentially before splintering in a rush of emotion off to their own thing.

But the anguish of that anger being the moments after the rage from the moment subsides and turning to a guilt over whatever happened, the two of them having those moments alone where they can see the empty space beside them and it hits them like a truck. Because for all they know their outburst just lost them the on the person who was so much like them and saw the actual them and not the projected image they tried to be.

Throw in a tired Winter with her head in her hands at her desk, trying desperately to focus on a document in the evening light as she strains her tired eyes to just read the words and make her head focus on this. The tired huffs of breath just tasting more and more like bitter anxiety as she just can't make herself not think of Cinder and the cruel way she shouted at her earlier.

Similarly look to Cinder sat on the cold ground of a sparring mat, a few droids or bags burned and thrown around her as she heaves for breath and just cannot find it in herself to put out the fire of regret in her for some reason. Finding something even more to draw emotion from as she goes back at it again and again, making herself more tired and aching her body more and more; but finding more despair in her than rage as she thinks about the things she said in response to Winter over something trivial.

The quiet of their place of rest as the pair of them inch back into it, the creaking of floorboards as they move about it; neither one of them daring to be the first one to broach the subject of their fight hazard they bring forth another one. In which bringing forth another one could entail one of them breaking down imminently from the stress alone. Taking a moment as the pair find themselves in their kitchen or living room, a space where they've spent a ridiculous amount of time with one another, it being painful even more so if this was also the place now soured by their outburst.

An issue of neither of them being the real types to forgive and forget with ease, but them still having such feelings for one another that they sort of force themselves into a scenario where they need to talk and cooperate to get past whatever this problem was. Because at this rate they need one another a whole lot more than they need to be the one on the high ground as they so wanton turn out to desire in most other conversations.

Anyway, silent apologies, bashful regrets, agreeing to be their for one another when they're mad rather than apart, respecting the time alone if they need it, and an agreement to keep filling that vacant space besides the pair of them so they don't have to feel empty again without their partner.

The problem with this parable is that the implicit "statistical inferences about the symbols" doesn't quite give the intuition about just how powerful the guy's "plain guesses" have gotten by now.

Yes, he's never seen a Chinese Queen or Chinese King, but he's done enough statistics to be able to tell you that the distance between the symbol for Queen and King can be expressed as another symbol, which we would express as "Binary Gender", and that he can apply that distance to move from one to the other, and that question of "what's the analog of Queen but opposite gender" is something he'll confidently respond to with "King". He also understands that he can strip a symbol of the gender and be probably left with something that we'd understand as "Royalty".

He cannot "intuit" a train, or a car, or a plane, but his vast statistical understanding will find them related to rails, roads and flight, and he does understand that things that don't "fit" inside a "car" might "fit" inside a "truck", which is in many ways equivalent to "car", but for some reason, 20 tons of gravel go well with a truck and not a car.

Additionally, it completely ignores that ChatGPT specifically has been grafted with functionality beyond the language model. It has for instance, a built in calculator. If you ask it what 413+512 is, it won't pore over its memories of every single mathematical equation it's ever been presented with to try to guess the result; it has enough statistical understanding to get that these sequences of symbols are something it can just punch into this Chinese Symbol Calculator that will just give the right and exact result every time, as long as he understands the sentences and transforms them into the correct mathematical notation.

The calculator is just a tip of the iceberg of the tools that could be gradually integrated, with the only bottleneck being the processing power that can be dedicated to it. It could integrate planning software. It could integrate whole compile-capable programming languages into it.

Similarly, chess might be too difficult to absorb via the language model, but why bother? It can just learn to interface with GNUChess or whatever and just write the state of the board into that as described, and then parse the best moves that program gives back.

At this point, it can read a manual and push and pull the right levers and parse the feedback from debuggers and inference states, and with ChatGPT being multimodal, it's beginning to be able to absorb even visible inputs. It's getting to the point where soon, it can see a sequence of symbols, find "the person with glasses and a brown jacket" in a camera stream, and guide a missile at them specifically, or whatever.

Gleeful trivialization of how "dully" things work only helps to discredit them for as long as the seemingly simple solution doesn't become immensely powerful.

So there’s this guy, right? He sits in a room by himself, with a computer and a keyboard full of Chinese characters. He doesn’t know Chinese, though, in fact he doesn’t even realise that Chinese is a language. He just thinks it’s a bunch of odd symbols. Anyway, the computer prints out a paragraph of Chinese, and he thinks, whoa, cool shapes. And then a message is displayed on the computer monitor: which character comes next?

This guy has no idea how the hell he’s meant to know that, so he just presses a random character on the keyboard. And then the computer goes BZZZT, wrong! The correct character was THIS one, and it flashes a character on the screen. And the guy thinks, augh, dammit! I hope I get it right next time. And sure enough, computer prints out another paragraph of Chinese, and then it asks the guy, what comes next?

He guesses again, and he gets it wrong again, and he goes augh again, and this carries on for a while. But eventually, he presses the button and it goes DING! You got it right this time! And he is so happy, you have no idea. This is the best day of his life. He is going to do everything in his power to make that machine go DING again. So he starts paying attention. He looks at the paragraph of Chinese printed out by the machine, and cross-compares it against all the other paragraphs he’s gotten. And, recall, this guy doesn’t even know that this is a language, it’s just a sequence of weird symbols to him. But it’s a sequence that forms patterns. He notices that if a particular symbol is displayed, then the next symbol is more likely to be this one. He notices some symbols are more common in general. Bit by bit, he starts to draw statistical inferences about the symbols, he analyses the printouts every way he can, he writes extensive notes to himself on how to recognise the patterns.

Over time, his guesses begin to get more and more accurate. He hears those lovely DING sounds that indicate his prediction was correct more and more often, and he manages to use that to condition his instincts better and better, picking up on cues consciously and subconsciously to get better and better at pressing the right button on the keyboard. Eventually, his accuracy is like 70% or something – pretty damn good for a guy who doesn’t even know Chinese is a language.

One day, something odd happens.

He gets a printout, the machine asks what character comes next, and he presses a button on the keyboard and– silence. No sound at all. Instead, the machine prints out the exact same sequence again, but with one small change. The character he input on the keyboard has been added to the end of the sequence.

Which character comes next?

This weirds the guy out, but he thinks, well. This is clearly a test of my prediction abilities. So I’m not going to treat this printout any differently to any other printout made by the machine – shit, I’ll pretend that last printout I got? Never even happened. I’m just going to keep acting like this is a normal day on the job, and I’m going to predict the next symbol in this sequence as if it was one of the thousands of printouts I’ve seen before. And that’s what he does! He presses what symbol comes next, and then another printout comes out with that symbol added to the end, and then he presses what he thinks will be the next symbol in that sequence. And then, eventually, he thinks, “hm. I don’t think there’s any symbol after this one. I think this is the end of the sequence.” And so he presses the “END” button on his keyboard, and sits back, satisfied.

Unbeknownst to him, the sequence of characters he input wasn’t just some meaningless string of symbols. See, the printouts he was getting, they were all always grammatically correct Chinese. And that first printout he’d gotten that day in particular? It was a question: “How do I open a door.” The string of characters he had just input, what he had determined to be the most likely string of symbols to come next, formed a comprehensible response that read, “You turn the handle and push”.

One day you decide to visit this guy’s office. You’ve heard he’s learning Chinese, and for whatever reason you decide to test his progress. So you ask him, “Hey, which character means dog?”

He looks at you like you’ve got two heads. You may as well have asked him which of his shoes means “dog”, or which of the hairs on the back of his arm. There’s no connection in his mind at all between language and his little symbol prediction game, indeed, he thinks of it as an advanced form of mathematics rather than anything to do with linguistics. He hadn’t even conceived of the idea that what he was doing could be considered a kind of communication any more than algebra is. He says to you, “Buddy, they’re just funny symbols. No need to get all philosophical about it.”

Suddenly, another printout comes out of the machine. He stares at it, puzzles over it, but you can tell he doesn’t know what it says. You do, though. You’re fluent in the language. You can see that it says the words, “Do you actually speak Chinese, or are you just a guy in a room doing statistics and shit?”

The guy leans over to you, and says confidently, “I know it looks like a jumble of completely random characters. But it’s actually a very sophisticated mathematical sequence,” and then he presses a button on the keyboard. And another, and another, and another, and slowly but surely he composes a sequence of characters that, unbeknownst to him, reads “Yes, I know Chinese fluently! If I didn’t I would not be able to speak with you.”

You can't solve problems until you believe there is a solution to be found. Sometimes the first step is just finding the next step because you don't where you're going, but you're going. I'm not a neuroscientist or anything but just from my own experience, the best way to start problem solving is to believe that there is a solution. It sounds kind of dumb, I'll grant that. But, if you dont believe in a solution, there's nothing to ponder. There's just not. If there's no way out, trying to find one is a waste of precious resources. You almost can't allocate energy/brain space. Once you think "OK but if I was going to find a miracle solution, what might it look like?" the world opens up your imagination is free to get creative and weird and go in all kind of unexpected directions. I've been surprised at myself and how fast ideas start flowing when I stop resisting. (Also dependent on other factors like fatigue and illness but putting those aside). You have to believe.

The human brain is ridiculous and people as a whole, as a collective, we can do ridiculous things. We've been to the MOON. and BACK. Multiple times! People can juggle knives and swallow fire and hold their breath for immense lengths of time, people can do astounding acrobatic feats, we can level up our hearing and our taste and our touch, I've seen a guy attach a teabag to his truck and just using truck controls dip it into a cup of hot water. Humans calculated the moon trips with just their brains and we called them computers. Old ladies sewed the astronaut suits with all the skills in their hands and minds and didn't make a single mistake in immensely small margins. We make breathtaking music and incredibly complex engineering. And no nobody can do anything their heart desires if they set their mind to it, we all have all kinds of limitations of privilege and health and access and what century we're born in. But many many people, maybe all people, can be extraordinary. We as a species and a community are absolutely extraordinary.

Imagine if most of us weren't still struggling for basic survival day in and day out, fleeing wars and poverty and disease etc. I don't know if I believe human potential even has an end limit, we went to the MOON on the amount of storage space of a jpeg file, if I've understood correctly.
