i have some defense for chrollo in yorknew and heavens arena. that was at the height of their ego. he always expects smoke when he tangles with someone much stronger than him (theoretically the shadow beasts were supposed to be strong but they turned out to be morons), but he never expects an actually smart survivor to surface in his line of work.

nen is always going to have some way to fuck over the strongest, but part of me believes that he never expected a gifted nen user- according to wing those are one in 10,000- to become a victim of vengeance.

see this is why i desperately want some more examples of horrible shit the phantom troupe has done before. like, clearly none of the old opps have been as serious as kurapika. and so depending on how strong their previous revenge-driven opponents are, there is backwards reasoning that they never would have seen him coming.

which is a nen rant that i will dip into for a second. nen seems to be very universal. users usually create abilities that can be used in every scenario. having conditional nen around a specific scenario with specific people is very rare in the hxh world and off the top of my head only kurapika, yokotani, *technically* shalnark, and *technically* koumgi have a nen ability like this. (yokotani is a specific place instead of a specific person).

ANYWAY. i 100% agree with the 'chrollo turned meteor city into a crime haven was kinda backwards' bit because dude actually what the fuck XD. sir you are doing the opposite of helping.

UNLESS. there is another way he was able to enforce fair trade of personnel for protection. which is where my brain goes because there seems to be either a lot or very few people that know that the troupe is from meteor.

which is a completely different can of worms that i wont even touch rn.

ALSO the heavens arena we can blame on ego alone. like chrollo's job as the leader outside of a mission is to disappear once he's done what he needs to do. like hisoka said "WHILE ON MISSIONS he will travel with two or more spiders" this doesn't count as a mission. this was an outing with friends. a fancy little date with the girls ~~

it was supposed to be light work. he didn't expect hisoka to be *that* creative with bungee gum and he did get verbal proof that hisoka had died.

plus. post mortem transmutation is such a bizarre idea because what is it supposed to do?? oh great your dead body transmuted itself into bubblegum. good for you. it sounds stupid in concept but hisoka is a master of his craft and chrollo greatly underestimated his opponent.

as for the leaving his spiders alone on the black whale i think thats, again, a stretch of the ego. chrollo had a plan going into this and confidence in his awareness of hisoka's movements. he figured out that hisoka was most likely on tier 1 literally day one. chapter 405 was a flash back to whenever the troupe met up on the boat.

that + he runs a laissez faire style of combat. he was prepared to run the ones solo and potentially die in the process.

also damn that makes me want to make my own post on chrollo on the whale. damn.

tldr: yeah this man played himself like 4 seperate times and i laugh and point at the silly little man

in my humblest opinion, i just think that as a community (of phantom troupe and chrollo fans), we tend to be pretty annoying when it comes to talking about chrollo's intelligence. what i mean is that before the succession war arc, everyone worshipped chrollo's intelligence as if he was superhumanly clever and could make no mistakes when it came to predictions. however, after hisoka killed shalnark and kortopi and the troupe members were seen on the black whale, people were really harsh on chrollo and his intelligence.

however, there have been many times where chrollo has made some pretty ridiculous mistakes or missed something extremely important due to him being too invested in something else. chrollo even admits this himself, which is why i find it annoying that most fans just think that it's simply because chrollo got too depressed or something; because again, he's shown so many gaps in his intelligence. chrollo is human; he makes mistakes. he isn't all perfect and he will make stupid mistakes, like we all do. here are some examples of times that he hasn't made the most intelligent of decisions:

- during the kurta clan massacre, chrollo didn't think of the very real possibility that perhaps the full kurta clan wasn't present when he had massacred them. this is especially embarrassing because technically speaking, kurapika (in the canon hxh volume 0) was the one who revealed the existence of the kurta to the public eye (haha funny pun) due to him activating his scarlet eyes near the mountain that he lived. so chrollo not thinking that someone literally activating the scarlet eyes OUTSIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN might be OUTSIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN is definitely a mistake on his part. that mistake indirectly led to pakunoda and uvogin's deaths.

- chrollo getting revenge for sarasa's murder and making sure that “this [torturing] never happens to anyone in meteor city again” (chapter 397) indirectly might've led to even more crime and danger in meteor city. chrollo's plan was for the world's most dangerous leaders to show off their torturing video tapes at meteor city, find which one was sarasa's, and kill whoever had did it. according to chapter 405, the troupe was successful. after that, we don't know what the rest of their plan was. however, considering how the troupe members haven't gone to meteor city in a while before the chimera ant arc, the child k!dnappings have likely ended. but chrollo did indirectly lead more criminals (such as gyro) into meteor city. and what do criminals do? they commit crimes.

- chrollo doesn't learn from his mistakes permanently. in the past, sarasa went off alone, and that's how she ultimately died. however, in the yorknew city arc, before uvogin dies, he's perfectly fine with hisoka going off alone. after uvogin dies (who notably dies due to pursuing kurapika alone), for the next 2-3 DAYS, the troupe operates in small groups. however, after chrollo defeats hisoka, he lets shalnark and kortopi, two NENLESS people, walk around on their own. they're killed too. on the black whale, chrollo is perfectly fine with working alone (before shizuku and bonolenov approach him), machi is alone, and franklin is also alone. considering how chrollo and bonolenov are both currently (as of chapter 410) also alone, that means that shizuku is most likely alone too. and what happens to troupe members who are alone? they always die.

- this one's a pretty common one, but chrollo should have cut off hisoka's head for good measure; especially since chrollo literally knows of post mortem nen and literally has a nen ability in his book that literally uses post mortem nen.

so to any hxh fan who calls chrollo “stupid in the succession war arc” because he's depressed, chrollo has ALWAYS shown signs of being somewhat lacking in common sense. my personal theory is that this is due to his upbringing in meteor city, where common sense never applied. i still love chrollo (he's literally my favorite character in any source of media), but i just think that people constantly overrating chrollo's intelligence makes them have false opinions on his current status in the succession war arc.

i have never seen a series handle so many topics under one umbrella all at once. EVERYONE in that damn series is written character first and it just SHOWS how characters should be. it just.

it explains why my love for characters develops as i learn more. take benjamin for example. he was depicted as this brute with an iron will to kill his brothers and sisters but then we see him interacting with his men and his reaction to fugetsu and its like WELL GOD DAMN I LIKE HIM NOW.

Late Night Musings About Hunter x Hunter and the Pull of Human Desire

Hunter x Hunter rules for a lot of reasons, but I think the thing that's stuck with me the most since binging through it is its rather earnest approach to depicting human desire. I think it's safe to say that desire/greed is the biggest theme of the series (there's a whole arc literally named Greed Island for a reason after all), but it's not just the simple "greed is bad" reading that you expect in a lot of simple shonen narratives. Every character is defined first and foremost by what they desire and what that desire does to them/how they use it as motivation.

Characters like Leorio at first blush are the classic greedy asshole who just wants all the money in the world. But his desire is born from this very humanistic desperation, this realization that no amount of study or care for medical practice will mean anything if he doesn't also have the cold hard cash to back up his ventures. He sees money as the most important thing in the world, but only because to him it is the only clear path to protect things he loves.

Meanwhile our main character Gon smiles happily as he essentially gambles on his own life on the off chance it might resolve this void in his stomach about his father. He is pretty sure he doesn't even want to meet his father, but wants to understand him so bad it drives him down a path that most adults in his life think is sheer lunacy. And don't even get me started on how Gon's desires warp in the Chimera Ant arc.

Even beyond the main cast this sense of desire is so important to every bit of HxH. The power system is a direct manifestation of your own aura that you actively design to suit your own tastes and wants and each character's nen ability speaks volumes as to who they are as a person. And hell, the occupation of "hunter" essentially boils down getting licensed to be able to pursue your own unbridled desires. A license can get you almost anywhere and is coveted because it frees you to chase desire entirely. And every hunter we see balances whatever they desire with what the world needs from them, even if their idea of balance is just killing anything that demands too much from them.

Really I could ramble about this stuff forever. This topic is one of those where I very well might try and script a proper essay for it at some point because it really does bounce around in my head a ton. From Meteor City's "We'll accept anything you leave here, but don't ever take anything away from us." motto to the clashing egos of the Succession War, to just literally everything about Meruem, its one of the most successful themes in a shonen manga I've read and I'm so happy I finally gave Togashi's masterpiece a try.

I was listening to Parade from the movie Paprika and talking w my mom about the exquisite portrayal of that vibe unique to dreams and I was overcome with a desire to listen to Pepper Steak from OFF Right Now... mom asked what it was from and as I was telling her about OFF I realized I made the connection because OFF also hits similar, but slightly different dreamlike “something is wrong” vibes that Paprika and Parade hits. They accomplish it in different ways, and the effect is of different types of Something Is Wrong, but they’re both distinctly dreamlike to me. I mean Paprika is literally about dreams but. Also excited and fascinated that someone who had never heard of OFF and received zero context upfront whatsoever (didn’t even say anything pulling up Pepper Steak) got similar genre of Vibes out of Parade and Pepper Steak... the Something Is Wrong... Something is vaguely disturbing and it’s hard to place but it’s Wrong... chefs kiss

meteor city runs on the most basic fundamental principal: A life is necessary to pay for a life. And that takes many different forms. It could be kidnapping, it could be murder, it could be transformation or an unfair arrest. they come back with vengeance and that was an idea imbued so deep in them that the ELDER OF THE GODDAMN CITY manifested an ability so strong that it STAYED AFTER HE DIED.

Sure Pakunoda could’ve known it’s wrong. But what should she have done? Walked away like Sheila? Talked Chrollo out of doing something about it? Trying to solve the problem without murder? Someone please tell me.

On the other hand,this is a bittersweet moment where Gon presents to the Spiders a version of friendship where you’re not following your friend down the dark path,where you care more about some higher moral principles than just your team winning. That you can care for someone and be involved without fully picking a side.

Because it’s the opposite of what the Spiders did. They all became villains because they care so much about each other,they distanced themselves to the level of co workers because they knew that’s what it takes to reach the goal. Yes,they chose revenge over everything else but they had no other way,it’s their path and they’re in this together

lets start with kalluto and illumi. ASSUMING THAT IS ILLUMI. there were several hints dropped that illumi is not himself even without the hisoka theory and if togashi decides to capitalize on it that would be FUCKING HUGE. plus chrollo is "good friends" with illumi and yknow what im invested. tell me more mr man.

kalluto being the next generation of spiders just seems to fit narratively but more important than that. kalluto is the only one of them that was "innocent". because remember. KURAPIKA IS STILL A PLAYER IN THIS GAME.

so it can go one of two ways. a) kalluto is the olive branch between the troupe and kurapika or b) kalluto is the sole survivor and has to make a choice.

chrollo himself would absolutely kill himself if he was the last one left. especially if he has already killed hisoka. he will not rest until that clown is dead because murdering his troupe members is one thing but BETRAYAL is the real reason hes so heated. betrayal of uvo and paku but also betrayal of HISOKAS OWN WORDS.

even if hes dying and even if hisoka has him down he will not stop fighting.

but honestly we might not even get there. i have so many ideas about which troupe members find him first and how exactly to kill him because we have OPTIONS. assuming bungee gum can be cut whcih it would just depend on the will of the opponent.

a) we let franklin get the kill and land a clean ass headshot or insta kill. i choose to believe franklin has piercing on those bullets so he can bypass a certain number of barriers guaranteed.

b) feitan and nobunaga jump this fool

c) machi makes good on her promise

plus like 8 more combos but i got more yap.

but back to chrollo. i have such an interesting psyche to project onto him. if he loses the troupe he has nothing left to live for. especially if he gets kalluto and illumi killed as well. he left meteor city completely defenseless he is trapped on a ship that was destined to sink without even knowing it.

he was so blind that the shame itself might kill him. and the only way i can see him going if he succeeds at killing hisoka and lives, is that kurapika has to be the one to stop him from killing himself. because kurapika is revolted at chrollos cowardice.

my machi ending also ties into kurapika bcs HELL nah is togashi letting chrollo live. im awaiting that juicy character death but i have a machi ending.

tldr she is the sole survivor and kurapika took a post mortem bandits secret off of chrollos corpse.

this is my version of a happy ending just by the way because it brings closure to the conflict and a capstone on chrollos ability as a creator.

idk how to explain it in 100 words or less so there you go.

now this all depends on who and who doesnt talk to chrollo on the upper tiers. ASSUMING THE HISOKA WE SAW WASNT HISOKA. its a lot of assumption i know but please give me a break the theory is TOO GOOD.

like if chrollo gets his hands on cats name thats it. its gg. he wins. its not narratively fulfilling at all unless camilla dies and he is suddenly defenseless.

okay dawg. So we all know the phantom troupe members are almost DEFINITELY gonna die. So I’m gonna yap abt what I need to see from them before they die bc if they all die stupid anti climatic deaths I’m gonna CRASH OUT

So I’ve known Shizuku and Nobunaga were gonna die from the start. With Shizuku, I’ve prepared myself for her death. So I won’t crash out THAT bad. Though, I really hope we get some dialogue about why she joined the troupe. I’m calling it right now, it’s gonna be that she joined the troupe because she wanted meteor city reforms but the useless fucking village elders don’t do shit so joined the only group that had actually made changes in meteor city. Yes, she knew what she was getting into, and yes, she knows they aren’t heroes. But their influence is super important to meteor city and I think it’d also be a good way to show the troupe’s relationship with the meteorians in a way that doesn’t feel forced. Plus it’d also flesh out Shizuku’s character more. Two birds with one stone pls hear my cries Togashi pleas

With Nobunaga, I’ve also accepted his death. Though there are certain things I need to see before he dies to be fully okay with it. For example, seeing his hatsu. If he dies without us seeing his hatsu, I’m crashing out. Actually, yk what’s worse? If we see his hatsu and it’s FUCKING STUPID. LIKE. DAWG. WE’VE WAITED YEARS TO SEE NOBUNAGA’S HASTU AND UR GONNA TELL ME ITS SRSLY SOME DUMB ASS SHIT. BRO. I KNOW HES AN ENHANCER BUT CMON…. I’ll forgive both of these things if Nobunaga gets to talk or think about Uvo one last time before his death. You guys know how I am…. Rrrrr… uvonaga….. but overall, if he dies in an anticlimactic way at the hands of hisoka I wont crash out THAT bad. I’ll be annoyed, but I could handle it

Now…. There’s a theory going around that Nobunaga might go by himself to fight Kurapika if he learns he’s on the boat. And I’m not here to talk about the logistics of that, but if that DOES happen, ohbmy god. Nobunaga straying from their mission to kill Hisoka so he can kill the chain user would be SO . OH MY GOD. It would be so selfish. But oh my god, it would be so good… it would really show how strong their bond really was. Nobunaga dying for Uvo genuinely might make throw up I’m getting nauseous thinking about it god that would be such a perfect way to end their story imgonnadie

Okay sorry moving on . If Bono’s gonna die PLEASE make it later down the line. Pls . I cannot handle his death vro. I mean, like… I’ll understand if he DOES die but I won’t be happy abt it…. We just need some more time with him pls Togashi pls… let the readers form an attachment to him first…. PLEADHHRHEJKSK all I’m asking for with Bono is more time and more dialogue thats all I want

Machi was already set to die. It’s so crazy, but Togashi wanted to kill her off when Hisoka woke up. She’s basically living on overtime right now, she was NOT meant to live this long. So I can’t really be that mad if she does die cause he was already being generous in giving us more time with her

Okay so I actually will not be crashing out if Phinks dies . Like at all. Sorry Phinks I love you but your death would be SO interesting. God, can you imagine Feitan’s reaction to that? Feitan will probably be one of the last to die so I will probably be numb by then. I’ll probably cry cause he’ll die with all his friends gone and he wasn’t able to protect them and that’s rlly sad to think abt so I won’t be crashing out per say but I’ll definitely be depressed

So. With all the other members, I had been thinking about their deaths since I started rewatching hxh. But. It only recently occurred to me that Franklin might die. And !!! I will be brutally murdering all of you😄😄😁 I will kill everyone on tumblr I will kill everyone on TikTok I will definitely kill everyone on twitter and I will kill everyone I know irl you guys will see me on the news for mass murder I will GENUINELY crash out none of you will be safe from my wrath I will have unprecedented levels of pure rage in my system and I will be doing nothing but screaming in agony for multiple days on end you guys will unfortunately have to deal with my posts about her death for at least two weeks straight I will not be nice about this I will grab a gun and air out this fuckass app in memory of Franklin she means so much to me I will cry so hard I will NOT be okay

And Chrollo’s just not dying. I FULLY believe that Hisoka will just leave Chrollo alone after killing all the spiders. Why? Because it’d be so unspeakably cruel. And it would fit the narrative themes so well. I think Chrollo losing his nen and Kurapika saying he’ll have to understand understand the grief of losing the people he loves was foreshadowing... or maybe I’m delusional… but think about how insane that would be guys I fully believe this I’m sticking with it unless I get proven wrong
