SERIES - Descendants of the Kings of Asturias: Bermudu was King of Asturias from 788.

BERMUDU was born around 750. He was probably born at the Kingdom of Asturias, given that his father moved there after the accession of his paternal uncle as Alfonsu I, King of Asturias in 739.

His parents were Fruela of Cantabria and his wife, whose name was not recorded, and was born a member of the HOUSE OF CANTABRIA.

In 768 his cousin King Fruela I was assassinated, without having adult male heirs. So, Bermudu's older brother Aureliu was elected by the Asturian nobility to succeed as the new King of Asturias.

While his brother became the King he was destined to an ecclesiastical career and probably did not get involved in Asturian politics over the next years.

His brother died in 773 without having children and as the Asturian Royals were lacking male heirs, the Asturian nobility elected an outsider as their new Monarch. The new King was then married to Bermudu's cousin Adosinda and reigned as King Silu.

Following King Silu's death in 783 there was a dispute between the Asturian Royals and a divided Asturian nobility. That year two Monarchs were elected, the first one was his cousin King Alfonsu II, who ruled briefly, and the second was his illegitimate cousin King Mauregatu.

Five years later King Mauregatu died five and Bermudu was forced to leave the Church to become the new elected Monarch. He acceded as BERMUDU I, KING OF ASTURIAS in 788.

On his accession, as it ocurred with his brother before, the House of Cantabria did not become the Royal House of Asturias. Instead he became a member of the ASTUR-LEONESE OF DYNASTY, founding his own branch line. And his branch line existed until the extinction of the Dynasty in the 11th century.

Sometime after he left the Church and became King, he married a woman of unknown origins, who is recorded with many names in different sources, as OZENDA, ADOSINDA, NUNILO and IMILO. They had one recorded son and possibly two other children (check the list below).

By 791 he lost the Battle of the Burbia River against Muslims that invaded Álava and Galicia, and decided to abdicate returning to his ecclesiastical career.

The Asturian nobility then finally agreed to let Alfonsu, the son of his cousin King Fruela I to rule as Monarch of Asturias. After which he returned from his exile to rule as King Alfonsu II.

Six years after his abdication, in 797, the former King of Asturias died somewhere in the Kingdom of Asturias. He was probably in his late fourties.

Since 842, when his eldest son acceded as Ramiru I, King of Asturias, all Monarchs of Asturias, León, Castile, Spain (except Joseph Bonaparte) and of the Two Sicilies were his descendants, including Felipe VI, the current King of Spain. And also, since the 15th century all Kings of Aragón were his descentants.
