scopOphilic_micromessaging_1087 - scopOphilic1997 presents a new micro-messaging series: small, subtle, and often unintentional messages we send and receive verbally and non-verbally.
The first image in this set was shot in September 2001. A moment when Times Square was virtually empty because of the 911 Attack.

The stories from both sides of the divide — stories of loss, of hope, of home and of exile — demand to be acknowledged and absorbed in their full humanity. Many of us have been sought after to take a stand by posting our position about the party with which we align, falling prey to knee-jerk reactions to pick a presumed side. Consequently, our pursuit of a more stable peace seems to meander through these personal and collective narratives. The polarity of these moments pressures us to choose a side, but that isn’t the work of de-escalation and resolve. The enduring work of peacemaking is forged in the sharing of these stories in a language that resists prejudice, finding common ground in which a space for understanding and empathy is carved. A crucial strategy is to move beyond the history books and engage the living epistles among us. Regardless of where you stand, in times like these, a robust theology considered with the intent of a common ground, the liberation of all oppressed peoples, and an embrace of humanity charges us to consider the most vulnerable among us.
Revs. Dr. Alisha Lola Jones and Calvin Taylor Skinner in The Grio. More than peace: How Toni Morrison urged us to fight for something bigger than war
Amid renewed declarations of war between Israel and Palestine, Toni Morrison’s 30-year-old Novel Prize speech holds new relevance.
This is a profund essay. But it seems to me that it incorrectly cites a 1996 speach, "The Dancing Mind" accepting a medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, with her 1993 Noble Lecture. Both should be read or listened to.
There is a sentence in the Nobel Lecture which connects both speeches and this good homily:
"The vitality of language lies in its ability to limn the actual, imagined and possible lives of its speakers, readers, writers."

While any tool that might reduce civilian casualties ought to be celebrated and its use in place of less precise options encouraged, we should take care that it actually does what it claims to do, and that it won’t further bring down the threshold for lethal action—lest it become a double-edged sword akin to the six blades that fan out from the R9X’s skin, mere seconds before impact.
Arthur Holland Michel in Defense One. Some Cautionary Notes on the New ‘Knife Missile’
Will the blade-wielding Hellfire variant actually reduce civilian casualties? Maybe.
These days very often what I see online brings me to tears. Mostly I keep quiet because I can't think of a way to contribute something to the stream that's positive. A re-blog of a post from a week ago at We Are Not Numbers ended with: "please never stop talking about gaza nor Palestine. They need us."
A child recounts what he experienced in the aftermath of a strike with this weapon, which in a convoluted way is imagined as a weapon that saves lives like his.
One of the most jarring aspects of Israel's offensive in Gaza has been the ethical displays of one-umanship. Perhaps drone strikes with a "flying ginsu" are less evil than nuclear missles fired from a sumarine fleet, but a child's anquished account helps us to see that they are very bad indeed. At least I can admit this.
The Spiritual , Down By The Riverside has roots prior to the American Civil War. I believe that envisioning a land and a time where "I ain't gonna study war no more" is a powerful ethical act.
The anquished cries of children lead me to tears, so too did the news of Columbia student organizations in solidarity with Students for Justice in Palestine and Jewish Voice for Peace formation of Columbia University Apartheid Divest. Our imagination for peace is more powerful together.
