To protect endangered sharks and rays, scientists are mapping these species’ most important locations
A tiger shark swims among surgeonfish off Fuvahmulah Atoll, Maldives, in the Indian Ocean. imageBROKER/Norbert Probst via Getty Images by David Shiffman, Arizona State University All of the saltwater bodies on Earth make up one big ocean. But within it, there is infinite variety – just ask any scuba diver. Some spots have more coral, more sea turtles, more fish, more life. “I’ve been diving in…

Marble Bust of Agrippina, first century A.D., from the Naples National Archaeological Museum. She didn’t play by the rules: This Roman empress was a master strategist. If she were a man, Agrippina (Pictured above) might have been one of the greatest. But the great-granddaughter of Augustus gathered enemies with her bare-knuckled move to power, and was later done in by the one man she sought to save. DEA/Album

Mount Segla, Senja Island, Norway
Tumblr media
An assorted land of mountainous terrain on the west with lush greenery on the east, Senja is a beautiful island popularly known as 'Norway in miniature'. At more than 1500 square kilometres, it is Norway's second-largest island. Gisund Bridge connects the island to the mainland in the town of Finnsnes. The most notable spot on Senja is pictured today, Mount Segla, a magnificent peak that is travelled frequently during summers with a trail starting in Fjordgård, a fishing village in the north of Senja. It takes a tough hike up the steep mountain to get to the over 610-metre-tall crest. Other tourist attractions on the island include Ånderdalen National Park and Tranøya, an island located on the south coast of Senja, celebrated for its tranquillity.

The scarlet-chested parrot looks like a technicolour budgerigar
The scarlet-chested parrot (Neophema splendida) is one of Australia’s most beautiful (and arguably underrated) birds. It’s endemic to arid and semi-arid parts of central South Australia and inland southern Western Australia, particularly throughout the Great Victoria Desert.

The sun sets behind the Mayan temples at Caracol in western Belize. After nearly 1,000 years in darkness, the site was discovered in 1937 by a woodcutter; archaeological excavations soon followed.

Maultaschen Photo: Katharina Hild/imageBROKER/Shutterstock
Maultaschen from Swabia are a lot like ravioli but bigger. They are typically palm-sized, square pockets of dough with fillings that run the gamut from savory to sweet and meaty to vegetarian. A traditional combination is minced meat, bread crumbs, onions and spinach -- all seasoned with salt, pepper and parsley. They're often simmered and served with broth instead of sauce for a tender, creamier treat, but are sometimes pan-fried and buttered for extra richness.
