Week 4 Studio Tutorial – Perspective Drawing

🤣🤣Every time I thought it was the thorniest exercise ever, the new coming-up tasks always break up my memory in last week. No pain/failures, no gain, perhaps. In general, during this week, I am indulged in drawing different perspectives, distinguishing the numerous details between terminologies, and making comparisons with orthographic drawings. It was awesome and I have a lot of hilarious tales to share this week.

Part 1: Construct a 2 point perspective view of your chamfered box

Before the class, we prepared to make the chamfered model(image 1)and commenced reading the interactive website, to have a general understanding of what is a perspective drawing. However, to utilize methods down to the ground need patience and carefulness. 

For me, it was a sad and funny story. I failed three times😭 and always happened at the end after tracing. 

Initially, at the last moment in the tutorial, by showing to Robert, the lines from the station point were not parallel(image 2). A mistake was buried from the beginning. 

Secondly, although I realized the problem, after taking a snap😑, I forgot the rules of carefulness totally, where LVP did not locate to the right position(image3). Having a snap just like a phone restored factory settings. 

Thirdly, the vanishing point really ‘vanished’, luckily, the new page could be added together. Fortunately, things come to the end(image4). What I learned is a well-known sentence ‘No Success Chance, No Failure to Be Destined!’. 

If I have the chance to do it again, I will double-check over the line weight and the page layout, and take notes down about things to change before relaxation, so that problems will not be made twice again.

Part 2. Extending a box in perspective /Part 3. Drawing circles in perspective 

Certainly, by developing such deep insights from part 1, I went through the second(image5) and the third exercise(image6-7) quite smoothly, without any trouble. Overall, a radical system of perspective drawings was constructed, not only depicting things we see, but also it was possible to extend, subdivide, and adding circles inside. Always, a sense of achievement and gratification grows up.

Week 5 Reflection

This week we learned about the specific sketch skill of drawing an object like adding the shadow and consideration of the line thickness. These skills are quite significant to the study of industrial design. During the activities, we initially do the warm-up practice（image 1-2) which asks us to draw the line or circle without using rulers and compass. In my view, this activity looks simple to do but quite challenging, because when I drawing that I found that it was a little bit hard to draw a perfectly straight line and circle due to the wrong drawing action. I thought it could be better that I move my entire arm from the shoulder instead of only moving the fingers of my hand. So I will do my practice in my own time.

     The next activity was to design 12 concepts of the Olay bottle by ourselves (image3) and sketched them on A3 paper. I enjoyed this activity because this is a good chance to think about series of creative design concepts and that will be useful for the design of the product in the latter study, we will not only think about the aesthetic of the products but also think about the practicality. For these 12 2D sketches, I try to add the shadow to each of the concepts which were able to look more realistic, but the shadow I have draw looks a little bit strange because I didn’t consider the light source of the objects and I draw the shadow on each side, also I didn’t highlight the thickness of the line, so the shadow was uncoordinated to the object.

  The final practice was to draw the perspective drawing of the Olay bottle, so I initially do the sketch of a box by 2 point perspective(image 4), this was the skill we have learnt last week, so I can finish that quickly. I will need to move this box to another paper and then draw the bottle in the box(image5). I found that outline was quite important because I initially used the pencil to draw the outline and that looks messy but it looks neater and cleaner after I applied the thicker line on that by using the Mark pen. The shadow was the main core for this exercise as well(image6). To do that, I have considered the light source so that the side of hard light can produce a shadow with a sharp edge and the side of soft light will produce a shadow with a blurry edge, these will all depend on the thickness and density of the line. I initially try to use the colour pen to draw the shadow but finally I turn to use the pencil to do because I was afraid that if I use the colour pen, I might make mistakes that cause the whole drawing could be ruined. For the next time, I will try to use the colour pen and be not afraid of making mistakes.

Week 8 – Digital Iteration

Models compared to sketches or drawings can indicate actual product weight and grip feel, and even texture and materiality, which are important aspects of a product that can convey product functionality, ergonomics and “perception of value” through user interactions, according to Andrew. He also mentioned in the video the words “low-fidelity” and “high-fidelity” as product properties, which in my view means the low and high detail, accuracy functionality and quality of various models that do not conform to a simple linear process.

In this week’s exercise, I find creating different shapes quite interesting, although I’ve never used this software before and the interface and functions are different from rhino, through following instructions from tutorials, the process became less difficult and many useful information was gained, such as select, zoom, rotate, gizmo, layers etc. Because I’m using Mac without a mouse, the process was done by accessing Critix and the experience was not so smooth, during use the software once crashed and when the task was done the file couldn’t be saved.

Modifiers such as bend, melt, twist, slice and taper are quite useful and fun to play around, along with creating different forms objects resembling real-life products can be created, in this task, I tried creating an organic and abstract form that kind of resemble a vegetation or flower (Image5), a water bottle (Image6), a lock (Image7) and an ice cream (Image8). 

In this week’s exercise I realize that my skills of digital rendering are limited and more efforts are needed, watching more tutorials and related videos then applying the techniques to practice would be a great way to progress.

Week 6  Exercise Reflection

Image1 was saved from Ins and it was designed by Hakan Gursu. This picture is made of many small squares stacked into a large object, which has a simple composition but difficult to rendering. Because it is transparent and can be seen through perspective, it tests designer’s sense of light very much. So I am very interested in this picture.

Image2  was found from a Chinese application - Weibo. The product in the picture is a self-service mask vending machine. The current situation of the Covid-19 is not optimistic. And the style of the artist is biased towards animation, so that people feel better close to. And then, masks are one of the effective ways of self-protection, so I chose this picture.

Image3 was designed by Sang Seok. His designs have a technological and animated feel that doesn't feel out of place. And his perspective views and detail views are very clear, so that I can feel the appearance of this car completely.

This week's practice is probably the most difficult one for me in this term. After all, the use of electronic software always makes me dizzy. I had a lot of problems in practice this week, but I'm still happy to have this practice, because it helped me improve my technique.

Among them, the biggest problem is the selection and stroke in Part6 (digital sketching), which may be caused by the computer system. I can't select the shape of the bottle as you said. After that, I tried other ways to do this step, but I still haven't managed to complete this step, and I've created something like this in Image4. However I asked my classmates and I used the magnetic lasso tool to do this.

After that, I felt like I needed to repeat check my manuscript when I was doing computer graphics. Because I forgot that the bottle in the middle of my drawing was not cylindrical (Image5), I wasted my time by using the wrong light and shadow effect when drawing. After that I check my hand drawing, I found the error and changed it. (Image6)

When I was drawing the light and shadow part of the bottle, I not only found that I did not have a good command of the light and shadow of the object, but also noticed that I neglected the unity of light in the exercise of Part 2. And then,my light is coming from the upper left  In this exercise. In addition, I also need to improve my grasp of light and shadow.

Finally have a design idea for my Nyo!Brittany... well, more specifically his human name. I came across the male Breton name "Elouan" and I honestly love it? It means "light" and I knew I wanted my Nyo!Brittany to have that as his name.

Beyond that... yeah, there's a lot more work to be done. For the time being I feel that he resembles Brittany too much and there isn't much of a distinct personality to him. Only my Nyo!Ireland and Nyo!Wales have distinctive personalities, the other Nyotalia versions are still in development. Ah well, I also wanted to have a stab at drawing Nyo!Brittany as a kid in traditional Breton clothes, since I know that national traditional clothes are out of my comfort zone. I need to practice more on them...
