Do you ever sit in the dark?

Alone, sitting on the couch. The only light from moonlight beyond the window, distant streetlights.

You stare into the dark, conversations in your head. Questioning everything, your life, your personality, yourself. The nagging voice in the back of your mind repeating the non-option.

You ignore it. Just as always.

The darkness whispers to you, in a way. Or the voices in your head use the shadows as a means of words.

“You look tired.”

Your eyes slowly move to them, the tangible one.

“I am tired.”

“You probably feel like this because it’s 2 am.”

“I’m aware.”

They sit beside you, the couch giving under their weight. Real.

“You wanna come up and sleep then—?”

“I’m aware.” You repeat.

Their head cocks to the side, realizing the double meaning.

“I’m aware…” You bring your hand up to gaze at it, it doesn’t feel real. The movements, the curves, it doesn’t feel like your hand, your vision contorts. “I’m aware of how different I am, right here, right now.”

Your eyes meet theirs, they could never see these things, no one could ever feel like this.

It feels that way, doesn’t it?

You can’t tell if that was your head or them.

“It’s almost addicting, feeling that—black hole.” They grab the fabric in the center of their shirt, tugging at it. “To feel something you’re so sure no one knows, it makes you feel special for the once.”

They meet your eyes. “Doesn’t it.”

You don’t respond, they hear you.

“It’s destructive.” They finally say, the uptick, to bring you back.

“It feels cosmic.” You rebut.

“You’re not ready for that yet.” They stand, holding a hand out to you. “You have to stay here, grounded, just for a little while longer.”

“It hurts.” You say it, you say if every time. It feels stupid every time you do, but you say it and mean it.

“I know.” They pull you into a hug, hugging you tighter than anything ever can or ever will. “But you have to keep going. You’re not gonna give up and let the assholes win are you?”

“Of course not.”

They smile, it’s warmer than the sun.
