Gotta love that ADHD coded Disney protagonist created or reimagined by a kinda edgy Catholic raised artist who’s life got up-ended when a parent died of a chronic illness and the subsequent gift the dying parent gave to them that became their lifelong hyperfixation and who then ended up with a gruff but loving foster parent and a colourful found family of strange creatures in a bizarre and wonderful universe threatened by various forms of religious/nationalist fanatics toxically hung up on what happened to their blood relatives a long time ago, toxically masculine colonialist Farquaads who want to destroy anything that’s different from what they think it should be, and callous wannabe scientists who want to force living creatures into a rigid hierarchy and reinforce themselves with God Complexes.

Also, there was a lot of thought put into the details and compositions for this video, and it was like 4 months of my life so I want to talk abt it ! For lack of better place to do so I've dumped everything under the cut again:

And last but not least, perhaps one of my favorite details of the whole project...we took inspo from religious and classical imagery for a big handful of the compositions or poses. The art I chose to pair with each scene was very intentional:

Honestly, “The Godfather” as a whole can honestly be seen as a twisted, dark reflection of the traditional Arthurian legends, with Michael as Arthur and Vito as both Uther and Merlin and Kay as Guinevere and Tom Hagen as Lancelot. Like, I don’t know if anyone else has pointed it out, but Kay is also the name of Arthur’s foster brother/one of his first knights and Hagen is evocative of the troublesome and treacherous Hagen of Tronje in the “Lay of the Nibelungs”. And in a twisted version of how Arthur managed to maintain his virtue and integrity and goodness even as his realm collapsed around him, Michael in Part Two manages to maintain his political power and prestige but loses all of the people who gave his life true meaning from Tom to Kay to Fredo.

By the way, @angevinyaoiz, if you enjoy the way Puzo and Coppola both mix the epic and the modern mundane in his writing style, may I recommend both “IT” by Stephen King and “Ulysses” by James Joyce, which both do similar things with regards to the mixture of the mythic and the modern?

reading through the og Godfather novel and it's SO fun to do so as a Medievalhead because it's of course very modern And pulpy but also a lot of passages end up feeling to me like medieval style or mediev inspired epic poetry inspired fantasy kinda. Puzo writes about Sicilians like fantasy authors do about an Cool Fantasy Race. Also ofc like Coppola pointed out it's an archetypical "Once there was a King with Three Sons" story but amusingly medieval to me in that it has that structure, especially in ch 14 where it goes into Vito's history, of like "the great emperor conquered and subdued the neighboring dissenting clans," and then lists the different groups in detail with tangential references to their Great Deeds and notable characteristics. It even mixes a little with Real History by incorporating the Capones, tho in a derisive way. (Also amusing that it follows that kind of story structure of "our great kingdom expands and flourishes.......until the TURKS pulled some BULLSHIT" )

When Vito calls the 5 families it does more of that kind of epic poem style where it sits down and lists everyone and names everyone super specifically and their loyalties and (racial) epithets, and then after the debate he makes his Cool Poetic Speech about protecting Michael which feels like to me welling out of some ancient space. This feels like it should be in some kind of verse:

This and the way Sonny is described in the Vito chapters and leading up to his death has a very epic epithets quality to it as well like ah yes, he of the Big Penis, named for devotion, witness of the First Death, wielder of the Anglo-Saxon Gun, taker of the mantle, in cold honorable rage went forth and was slain

katsuki is sitting on the couch in the living room, holding his new little baby in his arms, and you notice that he's just been staring at him for the longest time. adjusts his little hat so his head doesn't get cold, pulls his small hands away from his face so he doesn't scratch himself.

and they're both quiet for a while, aside from the occasional squirmy baby noise, but katsuki eventually speaks up to ask—

"why's he lookin' at me like that?"

not only is the question itself funny, but the way it's voiced — tone deep and gruff, almost affronted — pulls a true laugh from you, has you shaking your head as you come around the couch to stand beside him.

and sure enough — your new little bean is frowning. even his little hairless browline is furrowed, hard.

you laugh again, sharp enough that your son wiggles in katsuki's arms. "because you're looking at him like that."

katsuki tch's, before turning to give you his son's exact same expression. "no 'm not. this is just my face."

"well, maybe that's just his face."

his frown deepens, hilariously enough. "ain't his face with you." and then he looks back down at him, like he's checking to see if he's still being glared at. he is. "looks like he's pissed."

"maybe he is."

you don't bother to correct him, to inform that your son does, in fact, give you a stink face every now and again — just like his father — and instead you watch katsuki lean down close to him, until their noses are nearly touching. watch the way little fingers squeeze around katsuki's thumb.

"the hell do you have to be pissed about, huh?" katsuki asks, voice quiet and low and small, enough for the boy in his arms. "far as i'm concerned, you're livin' the life."

you only laugh, smile while running a hand through katsuki's hair.

you'd say you are, too.
