Pointless activity numero 10
May 7th, 2009
A new favorite activity of mine involves taking a old news story and trying to turn it into a Hollywood pitch. It’s pointless and harmless and is much like making things out of tin foil along to Blue Peter but then trying to eat the tin foil just to see what it feels like…Feels weird just in case you wondered.
Anyway here is my latest (and first) effort in a game I like to call “pointless activity number 8″ or “Hollywoodizing the news”
Firstly a Synopsis of The News Story: On the 21st of March 2009 Google’s “Street View” went online in the UK, this technology allowed people to take a 360 degree tour of 25 city’s from the comfort of their computer, however some images were removed for invading privacy laws including one showing a man coming out of a sex shop in Soho.
The Hollywood Pitch:
A one syllabled sexy yet scruffy man is on the run for his life, unwillingly partnered with his glasses clad sexy photographer ex girlfriend. One syllable has unwittingly found himself involved in a global computer conspiracy, which threatens to destroy the world….unless he can figure out how to put a stop to it. Its one man against “The Man’s” unquestionable thirst for consumerism in a world full of pain.
Brad/Buck/Ben is a sad mess of a man who eats noodles from a bin whilst playing World of Warcraft/Day of The Tentacle. He was recently fired from the world’s largest Internet server Noogle after he found their new product City View too unsavoury for his ethical code. He is a man with morals who is potential sexy. His best friend still works for them but the day after City View is launched he is brutally murdered and our hero is framed for the crime!
The night before the brutal murder our hero was on the Noogle site and happened to noticed this odd looking guy coming out of his apartment building with a really big knife and a balaclava but he didn’t think much of it at the time but now…. it all makes sense. He tells the cops (Ed Burns with a wig) about the picture, but they don’t believe him, luckily he sent it to his sexy photographer ex girlfriend to check out (Kate Hudson in glasses.) However when she agrees to help him they both start getting framed! Bank cards bounce! There photos are in convenience stores! He has to cut his hair and have a shave! Oh he is sexy.
They find the knife man, but he is dead!
The audience by this point will be like “NO WAY!”
Then the police turn up and although they escape Buddy tells Ed Burn’s he is so innocent. He doesn’t shoot him when he has the chance (it’s not like the fugitive, they can’t sue, the dead man has a knife not one arm, plus Ford owes me a favour). This makes whigful Ed Burns begin to think there is something fishy going on, and he starts investigating Noogle, and discovers it was invading privacy laws with City View….
Anyway our two hero’s end up finding out more info (someone approaches them in a diner whose wife was molested by Noogle and he wants to spill,) which leads them to the final showdown with Noogle’s boss.
He confesses everything, saying how they had to kill Ben’s friend because he was going to tell everyone about how City View was being used by the mafia/bank/ Richard Bacon/devil.
As the Noogle boss who is the guy who plays the farmer in Babe tells them his plan from behind his big office chair the police turn up, and the boss tells Ed Burns to shoot the guy, but Brad/sexy bespectled slut have e already put it up on twitter. Luckily Ed Burns is a follower of there’s, and he tells the evil boss that the game is up. He gets a shot in at Brad, but is shot by Burns first and falls out of the huge glass window of his office toppling 800 floors, shouting out “nooo!!!!!”/ “WHHHYYYY!!” or “That’ll do piggggg!!!” as he plunges to his death. Brad lives and Burns and the girlfriend gather around his hospital bedside, and they made some joke, and then maybe the credits should have a song by The Fray.
Sample dialogue from script:
“You have not been the same since she left.”
“I’m just an innocent man in a crazy mixed up world”
“I never stopped loving you, I just stopped loving what you had become.”
Suggested Film Names
The City View of Death
Bad Technology
The Butterfly
Budget will be 500 million

Open for bootleg trading~
Hello all! I am posting my bootleg list here for now as a temporary list until I get my website up and running- I am open to trading! I’m mainly looking for any Cats production- preferably English or Dutch but any musical would be nice to have and expand my collection.
Addams Family - Broadway - March 12, 2010
FORMAT: .VOB w/o smalls
CAST:Nathan Lane (Gomez Addams), Bebe Neuwirth (Morticia Addams), Terrence Mann (Mal Beineke), Carolee Carmello (Alice Beineke), Kevin Chamberlin (Uncle Fester), Jackie Hoffman (Grandma), Zachary James (Lurch), Wesley Taylor (Lucas Beineke), Krysta Rodriguez (Wednesday Addams), Adam Riegler (Pugsley Addams)
NOTES: Video quality isn't the best, and audio is sometimes on the softer side. Still a very entertaining show.
Anastasia - Broadway - September 6, 2017
FORMAT: (VOBs w/ smalls)
CAST: Christy Altomare (Anastasia), Derek Klena (Dmitry), John Bolton (Vlad), Ramin Karimloo (Gleb), Caroline O'Connor (Lily), Mary Beth Peil (Maria Feodorovna), Zach Adkins, Sissy Bell, Lauren Blackman, Kyle Brown, Janet Dickinson, Constantine Germanacos, Wes Hart, Ken Krugman, Shina Ann Morris, James A. Pierce III, Molly Rushing, Nicole Scimerca, Johnny Stellard, Allison Walsh (Ensemble)
Aladdin - Broadway, 2014-Nov-05 (SunsetBlvd79‘s master)
Format: VOB + smalls (7.58 GB)
CAST: Adam Jacobs (Aladdin), Courtney Reed (Jasmine), Merwin Foard (s/b Jafar), Michael James Scott (s/b Genie)
NOTES: Beautiful HD capture of latest Disney Broadway offering. Great to see the changes from the Toronto tryout. Michael and Merwin do terrific jobs as Genie and Jafar.
Beauty and the Beast New Zealand April 2006 - Proshot
Format: .VOB w/ smalls
Cast: Jade Steele, Russell Dixon, Glen Drake, Rob Ormsby, Gladys Hope
NOTES: Only the first act & first part of act two!
Beauty and the Beast (Disney) - Broadway - July 27, 2007 (Unknown's video master)
CAST: Anneliese van der Pol (Belle), Steve Blanchard (Beast/Prince), Jamie Ross (Maurice), Chris Hoch (Gaston), David DeVries (Lumière), Jeanne Lehman (Mrs. Potts), Glenn Rainey (Cogsworth), Ann Mandrella (Babette), Trevor Braun (Chip), Aldrin Gonzalez (Le Fou)
NOTES: Two days before the show closed on Broadway. Good amount of closeups and good quality filmed from the mid-mezzanine; there is a railing issue for a while in Act 1 but the taper improves. 'Me', 'Gaston' and 'Be Our Guest' are all predominantly missing and recording stopped for some time after 'Gaston', which created a little jump in the timeline to where Maurice gets thrown out of the tavern. Still a nice video with great closeups of the last Broadway cast.
Beauty and the Beast - Music Theatre of Wichita (2016)
FORMAT: .VOB w/ Smalls
CAST: Catherine Charlebois, Thaddeus Pearson, Johnny Stellard, Steve Hitchcock, James Beaman, Katie Banks-Todd, Karen L. Robu, Lexis Danca, James Heinrichs, Timothy W. Robu, Tanner Pflueger, John Boldenow

Great audio as well.

NOTES: Some people walking across the image for a few seconds during Jennyanydots and Rum Tum Tugger's number. Sometimes a head is visible but not obstructing the action. Almost no white-outs with very good video quality. Audio is very crisp as well. Filmed from a higher seat, but zooms are excellently done and fluent. Overal an amazing bootleg!

Side blog to @somexofusxarexhuman < Canon Stiles RP
Please remember this is an RP blog and not an Art blog, to see my art follow me here on twitter >>> ***CLICK***
My open starters > CLICK <
Anyone can reply, please don't let reblog amount scare you!
Rules::
Rule one
Please be patient with me. I’m either stupid fast at replying or I take a few days. If it seems I’ve forgotten you, though, send me an IM
Rule Two
That being said I will reply when I feel like. I will always tell you if I need to drop a thread, if I take long it doesn’t mean I’ve dropped it. If you need to drop it because I’m taking too long, let me know. I promise not to be mad.
Rule Three
I will not RP with anyone under the age of 18, even if the thread has no smut. I’m sorry, but no. This is an adult oriented blog. Heavy themes, along with smut, will be regularly posted in rp formal and/or in images.
Rule Four
I will not RP with anime/cartoon/game FC’s (There are exceptions like RE8 chars). I will also not RP with any deceased FC’s
Rule Five
As awesome as it would be to be bilingual, I only speak and know English. Anything you see me post that is not English was brought to you by Google Translate.
Rule Six
I do not have a verse page, but that doesn’t mean I’m not open to AU’s. I LOVE AU’s. I’m a multi-ship multi-post blog and am trash for any and all AU’s. Just ask!
Rule Seven
I can write a lot in my replies (And a lot of it can be unnecessary detail) but don't feel pressured to match my length! Just, please, try to give me something more than two sentences to work with. I don't typically enjoy writing short replies, but I understand muses can be fickle things.
Rule Eight
I don't enjoy pregnancy threads or writing children so I, typically, will steer clear of those types of threads. If our muses have been in a long relationship (and we have been writing partners for a while as well) I may make an exception, but don't come in expecting babies. My girls all have IUD's unless stated otherwise. That being said I am 100% down with the breeding kink.
Rule Nine
If a muse has (unknown) somewhere in their age it means they are old old. Like 100+, so age can be changed if you are uncomfortable with age gap.
Rule Ten
I have a handful of chronic issues that effect my sleep and my mood so I'm up all hours of the day. I live in EST time zone, but I'm often up at 4AM so.....it's a gamble lol!
Rule Eleven
I have SEVERE ANXIETY and struggle messaging new people. IF I FOLLOWED YOU I WANT TO RP WITH YOU! I'm probably just figuring out how to message you without puking lol. I would appreciate the help, if you want, or you can wait until I gather the enrve.
Rule Twelve
My grammar isn't the best in the galaxy, ok? I over use comma's and never really figured out the semi-colon. If something is horribly wrong or you can't understand what I've written, just ask please.
Rule Thirteen
I will tag major triggers (ie; Snakes, Spiders etc) but I won't tag smut or NSFW unless it really needs it.
Rule Fourteen
If I have ever posted a meme please feel free to send one in even if it was a year ago! With that in mind, I do prefer introduction threads with new muns/characters if I am not familiar with them.
Rule Fifteen
Don't like my starters
Rule Sixteen
Don't God-Mod blah blah and Follow TOS k I love you <3 <3

Can you think of three images that are recurring elements in your writing? Are they symbolic of something? What do these images mean to you? Do you have any memories/connotations tied to them?
Hmm, I think this will wind up being less “images,” and more about common themes that pop up in my writing. Because I don’t think I repeat specific images all that often.
1. Friendship. A lot of my favorite characters are minor bad guys, not so much on the genocidal world-ending scale, more on the bank-robbing (and occasional murder) scale. They also tend to be part of groups and teams, like the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and the Flash Rogues. Basically, I like watching these characters interact and get along and be nice to each other. That doesn’t mean that everything is peaches and cream, and that they never fight. In fact, I imagine them fighting quite frequently. But I like seeing these characters pal around, fight and make-up (and maybe come to understand each other better), and generally have each other’s backs, like a found family. it’s a side we don’t see as often in the comics. A couple of my favorite ships, namely Trickster (James Jesse)/Pied Piper and Pyro (St. John Allerdyce)/Avalanche are romances that grow out of friendships. And it’s honestly not even about just wanting to see them bang (in fact, I haven’t written any explicit sex fic for either of those ships, although some day I might), it’s about wanting them to have this strong sense of closeness and love for each other. Which of course, you could still have platonically, and I can enjoy “friendship fics” about my favorite ships just as well. I think maybe I ship some of these pairings because I want them to be the most important thing in each other’s lives, without a different romantic partner gumming up the works. Or maybe because that’s a kind of romance that I find ideal - this very close friendship easily transitioning into romantic love rather than “these two people are physically attracted to each other, and spend the next several seasons being stupid and angsty about it.” I like the Ben Wyatt/Leslie Knope type romance - “I like you and I love you.”
2. Detailed back stories - A lot of my favorites are also fairly minor characters, and as such, aren’t always super-well developed (especially depending on who is writing them). And I tend to put a lot of details into my stories, even when I don’t intend to. I can’t just have Hartley find James in his apartment in the morning, I have to say what kind of cereal they are eating and what they are watching on TV. I have so many useless head-canons about Blob and Toad playing Animal Crossing, and Pyro watching Australian soap operas and Avalanche trying to breed orchids in his spare time. Do you want to know Pyro’s opinion on Vegemite? Well, too bad, I’m gonna tell you anyway. I also like making reference back to older stories in the comics (unless I completely disagree with the portrayal, in which case I just blithely ignore canon.)
3. Characters disagreeing without either being entirely wrong. This is kind of a new thing, since I’ve been exchanging a lot of RP asks with @sebastianshaw, which is mostly my version of Pyro interacting with her version of Sebastian Shaw. And they hate each other. They clash in almost every little ficlet I write. But Sebastian Shaw is not just a strawman for wrong opinions, he’s an interesting and complex character (especially the way @sebastianshaw writes him), who is ruthless and callous, but also intelligent and competent. Shaw is cruelly observant, and his opinions about Pyro, although overly dismissive and condescending, are not entirely wrong. Pyro can be needlessly argumentative and hostile (he generally finds something nasty to say to Shaw in every interaction), but he also often has a point. I don’t know why I enjoy writing this. Maybe because it often doesn’t sit right with me when one character gets portrayed as a complete unreasonable monster, even though we actually need a few unreasonable monsters to be good villains in the comics. Or maybe because I tend to be non-confrontational and dislike arguing in real life. So I get my cathartic release writing as a loud-mouthed, opinionated Australian pyrokinetic who disagrees with everything Shaw says.
Extra bonus theme: Dumb, goofy characters being more competent than portrayed, but still being dumb and goofy. One of my pet peeves in comics is characters like Trickster (who is an engineering genius) and Pyro (canonically a former journalist and author) being portrayed as complete idiots. I like to show them (and others like Blob and Toad, who also don’t get much respect) being intelligent and thoughtful. But then I also like to show them being hilarious dumb-asses because it’s more fun that way. Like I’d actually enjoy Marauders Pyro if he was given a few moments of intelligence and sophistication to go along with his stupid face tattoo and new penchant for biting people. It’s a fine line!
Extra extra bonus theme: Everyone is gay. I think I head-cannon a lot of my favorite characters as some form of LGBT (or I’m open to imagining them that way, if I don’t directly head-canon it.) There are a few faves that I still imagine as straight, but not that many. Maybe because we still don’t get a huge amount of canon LGBT content, so it’s a matter of wanting what I can’t have? Maybe I just want the widest possibility of ships? Maybe I just want to imagine two guys banging - although again, I don’t actually write a lot of pure sex fic, and I do the same for female favorite characters. And I do this even for characters that I don’t have specific favorite ships for, like the Riddler or Loki or Rachel Summers.

From the Depths (Dal Profondo, Valentina Pedicini, 2013)
I could take them or leave them
Louise Bourgeois: The Spider, the Mistress and the Tangerine (Marion Cajori and Amei Wallach, 2008) The Republic of Enchanters (La République des enchanteurs, Fanny Liatard and Jérémy Trouilh, 2016) America (Valérie Massadian, 2013) The Fall (Tarsem Singh, 2006) Douce Menace (Ludovic Habas, Yoan Sender, Margaux Vaxelaire, Mickaël Krebs, Florent Rousseau, 2011) A Radiant Life (Une Vie radieuse, Meryll Hardt, 2013)
Films I enjoyed
Wodaabe: Herdsmen of the Sun and Bells from the Deep: Faith and Superstition in Russia (Glocken aus der Tiefe - Glaube und Aberglaube in Russland) (Werner Herzog, 1989 and 1993): Just super nice Herzog documentaries. There are a bunch on Mubi now and I might watch all of them
We Are the Best! (Vi är bäst!, Lukas Moodysson, 2013): I was on the lookout for this film for years and then it popped up on Mubi. Maybe I didn’t love it because of all that anticipation, but it’s still a great film that I wish more people, especially more teenagers, would see
Return to Reason (Le Retour à la raison, Man Ray, 1923): Always love early experiments with film
Sissy Boy Slap Party (Guy Maddin, 2004): Very silly! Loved it
Sullivan's Banks (Sullivans Banken) and Maillart's Bridges (Maillarts Brücken) (Heinz Emigholz, both 2000): It’s nice that there are non-narrative documentaries like this. You wouldn’t think filming buildings (and bridges) from different angles would bring something to the table as opposed to, for instance, photographing them, but somehow it really does. Again, a bunch of Emigholz’s films are on Mubi and they make for great daytime entertainment, might watch more soon
Black Panthers (Agnès Varda, 1970): This was made available for free by The Criterion Channel and I was finally able to see it, as well as keep going with my Vardathon. I loved how matter-of-fact and sympathetic this short documentary was
Trouble Every Day (Claire Denis, 2001): The kind of vampire movie I wish there were more of. Also always love Béatrice Dalle <3
Two Years at Sea (Ben Rivers, 2011): This is a very quiet, contemplative, beautiful documentary about a man who lives alone in the woods
The Creeping Garden (Tim Grabham and Jasper Sharp, 2014): The wide array of things that can be explored while just talking about slime mould is a little bit stunning -- great soundtrack too
Homo Sapiens (Nikolaus Geyrhalter, 2016): I preferred Our Daily Bread from the same director but I still loved this. I like how Geyrhalter always lets his (stunning) images do the talking
Shirley (Josephine Decker, 2020): Being a fan of both Shirley Jackson and Elisabeth Moss, I’d wanted to see this since it came out. It was pretty much exactly as I expected, which is to say very good. It reminded me, not without reason, of the recent We Have Always Lived in the Castle adaptation
Baghead (Mark Duplass and Jay Duplass, 2008): Sometimes silly, sometimes deep, Duplass brothers comedy featuring young Greta Gerwig
Lahemaa (Leslie Lagier, 2010): Science fiction short about a Chernobyl-like mysterious city
Closeness (Теснота, Kantemir Balagov, 2017): Might have preferred this to Beanpole, still not entirely sure what to think, but I loved the main character and I loved the story
Touki Bouki (Djibril Diop Mambéty, 1973): This is a wonderful debut feature by a director whom, for some reason, I had heard nothing about until now
Daughter (Dcera, Daria Kashcheeva, 2019): The animation was wonderful and the story a lot more layered than I would have thought for such a popular short film
Human Nature (Sverre Fredriksen, 2019): Please watch this right now if you can. It’s three minutes long and you won’t regret it. Very silly
1 Dimension (一维, Lü Yue, 2013): This is a beautiful short film about the nature of good and evil and I loved that, contrarily to many films with exactly this premise, it didn’t actually try to provide a clear-cut answer
Films I loved
Funny Games (Michael Haneke, 1997): Definitely this month’s film that fucked me up. So gruelling
Olla (Ariane Labed, 2019): When I first finished this I was doubtful but the more I thought of it the more I loved it. It’s about an Internet girlfriend from Eastern Europe who comes to France and I don’t know that I can say much more about it except that it manages to talk about sex work in a way that I enjoyed
Ghosts Before Breakfast (Vormittagsspuk, Hans Richter, 1928): This, together with Meshes of the Afternoon, which I saw a few months ago, reminds me that so-called experimental and avant-garde stuff was in film from the very beginning, it was just ignored by big-budget film producers in favour of narrative features. Anyway, this is a great short film and it's only six minutes so you should definitely watch it
Asparagus (Suzan Pitt, 1979): A five-star rating on Mubi, just, one of those things I am glad women are making out there -- just like Jodie Mack's The Grand Bizarre a few months ago
The Watermelon Woman (Cheryl Dunye, 1996): This classic was made available by The Criterion Channel and I could finally see it... It feels like a first film in all the good and bad ways, and I’m glad it exists, glad there are complex, multilayered stories about Black lesbians out there
Curling (Denis Côté, 2010): I saw this after I was so favourably impressed by Ghost Town Anthology and I have to say, if anyone can hook me up with the rest of Côté's filmography, please please please hit me up. I'm in love with his depiction of small-town Québec, and the slow progression of his drama, the no-music soundtrack, just everything -- not to mention his take on “genre”
The Return (Возвращение, Andrey Zvyaginstev, 2003): I’m glad I stuck with Zvyagintsev after I was disappointed by The Banishment. Of the four I’ve seen, this is by far my favourite film of his (maybe because, since there are no women, there is no misogyny). It is often hard to watch but the ending brings it all together quite beautifully
Disclosure (Sam Feder, 2020): This is such a good documentary. It’s often hit-or-miss with Netflix releases but I urge you to watch this whether or not you are already “educated” about the representation of trans people in film and television. Jen Richards in particular provides great insight
*
I spent almost all of my movie time on Mubi in June. Not that I’m sad about it! This subscription might be my best decision in a while. Now to watch more random stuff that I’ve never heard about before!

Shield Hero 20 - 22 | Sarazanmai 7 - 9 | BSD 32 - 34 | Fruits Basket 8 - 9 | Demon Slayer 8 - 10 | OPM 20 - 21
Shield Hero 20
Motoyasu getting dragged by Filo was funny…not enough to get a proper laugh though. Just a smirk or two.
Stop narrating and just get on with it, Naofumi and friends…!
“I was saying we should fight together all along.” (from Itsuki) – Were you, now…? (skeptical)
Ass-pull! I call “ass-pull” at the power to swallow the phoenix flame! Seriously, when did the dragon get the opportunity to teach Naofumi how to do that???
How did Naofumi not die after losing so much blood…?
What does the Q even stand for in the queen’s name…?
Sarazanmai 7
The seagulls…so fluffy…
For some reason, I expect a fakeout, but then it never arrives…these boys are really connecting…
I found some kappa croquette thingy online, but it referred to a “Shiki City” which probably isn’t in Asakusa…
The shirt…Kazuki’s shirt says “frog” but I get the feeling it also means “return”.
Shirohasu water. It’s Irohasu in Japan.
Was the lyric to Kawausoiya (the otter song) “gonna take ‘em”…?
Nice ET reference, Sara.
Balls…not just sport entendre, but…y’know. The sort of humour I don’t like as much.
Ooh…Keppi is shaping up to be the bad guy. But what plans does he have? Am I speculating too much and is he being framed? Hard to know until next time…
BSD 32
When Kyouka is eating the sundae, she looks like the Tofu Kyouka from Mayoi…hmm.
Can I confess something? Before I saw the illustrations for s2, I thought Louisa’s hair was much darker than what it is in the anime…hmmm, indeed.
I don’t think we were ever told (in the manga or the anime) what Louisa’s wish was…
This bit with Fyodor…I don’t think it was in the manga.
Subarashi-sou is a pun on “it seems wonderful”. That wasn’t in the manga, but it’s a great pun (because it’s right up my alley).
Fitz laughing at the neighbour’s TV wasn’t in the manga either, but that’s just the anime director’s humour peeking through.
“Blalack Daniel’s”, LOL.
Ohh…a quick Google reveals TJ Eckleberg is from the Great Gatsby. In there, he’s an eye doctor, but here, he’s an engineer.
George B Wilson is also from the Great Gatsby…Here be spoilers, but…George dies in his original work too.
Manhasset is a place in New York…I assume it’s connected to the Great Gatsby as well…
Oh yeah! Random Poe moment. That’s in the manga, so Igarashi (or whoever’s responsible for the terrible humour) doesn’t have to fake that bit.
Cue “Objection!” by Fitz, lemme guess. Even if I know the outcome and how it was done, I’d like to have my memory refreshed (by stabbing in the dark…and making an Ace Attorney joke in the process).
I already know, without googling, that Tom Buchanan is part of Great Gatsby as well…
Bank of Amerigo…LOL.
Fruits Basket 8
“If you show up for the banquet now…”
“The banquet sounds just like the folk tale!” Honestly, subbers, proofread…
Haa-kun and Haa-san. No distinguishing between them (aside from honorifics), even though they’re two completely different people.
Hatori’s squinty face was…hilarious, to put it simply.
Oh…I forgot the dance seems to be something the animal of the year does. So if Yuki was 3 years ago, it makes sense Momiji is doing it this year.
Best seat in the house for a sunrise, huh?
Kimetsu no Yaiba 8
I’ve seen Muzan being described as “Demon Michael Jackson” and now I can’t get that out of my head when I see him…sorry.
Tsukihiko, huh? It translates to “moon’s radiance” or something like that. That name is appropriate for a bad guy, isn’t it?
This is the first time I’ve really listened to the OST (aside from the OP and ED), so it’s…really something.
Ooh, I didn’t realise until now, but Ufotable even imitated the paper Jump is printed on with the next-ep previews…
OPM 2 8 (OPM 20)
Er…I haven’t mentioned it for the past few episodes, but Suiryu is hotttttttt. (No? I said that? Okay, next step.) That’s basically the only reason why I’m watching anymore…I can’t seem to find anyone who thinks positively of this tournament arc enough to do reviews of it that I can read, which has made my own opinion of this beloved series go down the drain…Also, if you weren’t aware, my taste lies not in Suiryu’s huge bulk, but rather in the fact he’s got long hair.
Didn’t Suiryu get pierced in the abs??? Where’s the blood coming from his injuries??? Update: He does have injuries there, they’re just not bloody…that’s all.
The main criticism for OPM 2 is the fact that it keeps cutting between different events, so it’s hard to follow. Well, I’ve had worse (see Concrete Revolutio) so that’s why I’m still here.
People say that clothing changes you – say if you put on a new outfit, you feel like a new person. (Of course, that’s all glamorising and praising consumption, but that’s beside the point here.) I think that’s what’s up with Max and Snek.
Shield Hero 21
“…the Shield Hero is worshipped.”
Really? Boob jiggle, at a time like this??? (Context: Malty is getting th slave crest painted on her.)
Wait, was there ever a Shield Church???
Okay, that felt like a real seasonal ending. What the heck is going to happen in the last few episodes, I wonder…?
Sarazanmai 8
Chikai knows the real meaning of YOLO…heh. I’m only kidding…
To be honest, I think I like Toi best out of the main trio. I tend to like the boys in blue…and no, I don’t mean the otter police.
Kazuki’s service provider is “Kappa Phone”, LOL.
When Reo held up the gun, I was yelling, “Enta! Get it for him!” (i.e. take the bullet) I didn’t expect him to actually do it…
…and here I thought tragic yuri was common enough and we don’t have enough Tragic Yaoi Dudes…
Notably, Toi was registered on Enta’s phone as “Kuji”, while Kazuki is registered as “Kazuki” (katakana) on Toi’s.
Shots fired…!
Update: I didn’t notice this, but the evil dude with kamome written behind him (I think it’s in this episode, but it might have been in the last one instead) must be based on a seagull…because that’s what kamome means.
Bungou Stray Dogs 33 (BSD S3 Ep 8)
I think it was around here I stopped reading the scans, because the series was picked up legally anyway…but I can see the death flags for a certain Port Mafia man…one who stands at the top.
As expected…butt shot. Igarashi (or whoever’s responsible for that shot) likes butts, so between this and Sarazanmai…*imagines image of kappa!Kazuki holding a shirikodama* There’s absolutely no buts about it (LOL), there’s no shortage of butts this season.
“To think that the rabbit being hunted would show its face…” – I think it’s hard for you to say that, Akutagawa, when you yourself have no face in that frame…
Why are both Akutagawa and Fyodor Naruto running today???
“So you’re doing this for that woman.”
What is “Mukurotoride”? I don’t seem to remember…maybe I never learnt what it was. Update: Apparently a tower in Dead Apple is called Mukurotoride.
Conspiracy time! This book sounds like Kunikida’s Ability…so imagine if it were under Dazai’s nose the entire time…
Fruits Basket 9
I love how the synopsis for this episode goes, “Kyo fights Yuki, Yuki fights a cold…”
Hatsuharu’s wearing such an ostentatious fluffy jacket…LOL, I love it.
Holy cow (LOL), I forgot how old Hatsuharu is…so that means he’s 15-ish, right?
Come to think of it…I see Fruits Basket characters in Ro Te O, which I started writing at about this time in 2013. The Azrael of that time was a hybrid of Hatsuharu, Ritsu and Ayame, Tetsuya is basically Yuki and Ryou is Kyou…hmm.
Apparently, Shigure had in the 2001 anime a song that went like, “High school girls, high school girls, cute high school girls for me.” So that’s where it was??? (Context: I haven’t seen Fruits Basket 2001, but read the entire manga.)
Kimetsu no Yaiba 9
Recap time, recap time…so the lady’s in the back room and Tanjiro conveniently forgets the man is in the basement…? Wuh?
Moya was complaining about how repetitive this show can get when it comes to the script (i.e. it repeats itself because it doesn’t trust its audience, but I think that’s because this is originally serialised on TV week by week that people may forget if they’re not bingeing, taking notes or following the manga). I’ll talk more about that in my KnY collab post, I guess…
When Yushiro said “watch your back”…he really meant it, huh?
Temari are the balls, but kemari is when you kick the balls.
“…the eyeballs on his hands are creepy.” – LOL.
Shield Hero 22
The ep title just says “Hero Council”…not specifically that there are 4 of them.
My stream’s been buffering more than usual, so I went “like mother, like daughter” before Naofumi did…
It would’ve ben massively funny to hear Melty call Malty either “Trash” or “B****”…especially the last one, because that’s always a fun way to end a sentence (especially for a girl as young as her). Update: She does, but the way she does it isn’t as funny as I thought it would be (and she doesn’t end her sentence with her sister’s new name).
Wait, I thought they got rid of her slave pact??? I thought it was only for the duration of her trial that she needed it for.
L’Arc and that lady seem like they’re foreshadowing for later…hmm. Update: The next-episode synopsis says “yes”. So does that new visual.
Sarazanmai 9
I can’t believe this show’s almost over…That means I gotta get a move on with RobiHachi, but to be honest? Non-anime things are probably going to kep me busy until…a few days from now. So I’ll get RobiHachi watched then.
Characetrs are dying en masse in this episode, aren’t they??? I saw a spoiler that (well, SPOILER) Chikai’s gonna die, but I don’t know about Enta or Keppi…Update: To be honest, I thought Chikai was going to become the next monster – a gun monster, perhaps. Maybe now that I’ve finished the episode, he’ll become a real zombie. (Hey, see what I did there with the bolding…? How’s that for hiding spoilers, eh???)
Oh yeah…I forgot Enta’s sister was Kazuki’s teacher…
There was a sign behind Masa that said”Hinode Asakusa” – “hi no de” meaning roughly “under the sun” or “leaving the sun”.
Tokarev…? The gun? Gun monster, maybe? Is this a critique of the American gun…(exaggerated voice) Nah, can’t be…this is Japanese.
Lionel…Lionel…for some reason, that name in relation to soccer seems familiar...I just can’t put my finger on who it reminds me of, though. Update: Is it, perhaps, Messi…? Yes, I think that’s the guy I was thinking of…!
Aw…I’m not crying, you are…But these words were running through my head before Toi chucked the bag of money away and yelled, “F***!”: “Everything I do, I do it for you.” Isn’t that cute…?
Bungou Stray Dogs 34
“…one by one?” Junban means “sequentially”, so I don’t see why you have to use the phrase “one by one”. Or “one at a time” would also work.
Hardbank…to contrast Softbank (a phone company in Japan).
Face-stealing aliens strike again…(re: Atsushi)
Oh flip. This reminds me of my Kunikida fic…yeah, I bet you don’t remember it.
Hey, this dude! Apparently he’s from one of Kunikida’s stories. I really am approaching the end of what I know of canon…*gulp* Update: Oops, we already passed that part…
I wonder if the real Fyodor could play cello…? Or is this just a thing to make him ominous and villanous…?
The cross on the wall behind Kunikida…makes this show more like Eva than Kekkai Sensen…exquisite. Absolutely exquisite, isn’t it?
Another cool cross, behind Tanizaki!
What’s a tatamigatana? Also, I didn’t know other people could be synchronised using Doppo Poet and Ranpo’s deduction…
Does Kouyou mean (by “the one I most despise”)…Chuuya? Or herself? It’s definitely not Ace.
Kimetsu no Yaiba 10
Headpats for Yushiro as well! Headpats for everyone!
There’s a lot of Tanjiro being terrified in this episode…
Wait…Kizuki? I thought they were the 12 Moons? (Well, “tsuki” means “moon”, but then what’s the “ki”?) Update: The “ki” means “demon”, so the Kizuki are the 12 Demon Moons.
Being alone with the body…that’s always a scary thought in murder mysteries…for the people who dissect them to determine the cause of death, that is.
Considering the name of the episode is “Together Forever”…nup, I don’t see Nezuko and Tanjiro separating anytime soon…
The Kasugai crow is what happens when you can’t turn off your Google Assistant…or GPS…or Siri.
If Tanjiro knows the name of his crow, how do the crows get their names? Do their trainers (is that the right term for a crow breeder in this case…?) give them names?
OPM S2 Ep 9 (Ep 21)
LOL, that one shot of the ants…JC Staff really don’t care about this series, do they…?
I kinda forgot about Genos after a bit more than a week…sorry, I was watching other anime in between. (More than usual, at least. I started playing Chibi Tamago – a forum game for AniList where you collect badges for watching anime - that’s why.)
Did he (Pri-Pri Prisoner)…store his phone in his butt…?

The face of evil
In pro-Wrestling the Heel (Bad Guy) is the one who insults the fans, uses illegal choke holds behind the Referee’s back uses a steel chair, removes the padding from the turnbuckle, removes the safety mat to expose the hard concrete and has their cronies’ gang up on the babyface (Good Guy) everything that makes you boo them. You ultimately want to see the heel get their comeuppance.
Evil is a point of view; one person’s Terrorist is another person’s freedom fighter. One person’s conspiracy theorist is another person’s free thinker just having somebody do bad sh*t for no apparent reason makes no dam sense. Good vs Bad isn’t as simple as black and white; it’s that big grey void in the centre where lines are blurred and it’s there that the scales can get tipped one way or another. Theoretically speaking good people can do bad things for the “Greater Good” and it is this “Greater Good” that is ultimately the deal breaker.
If someone was running in your direction seriously injured crying and bleeding and they said, “Please help me.” then they ducked behind a parked car. Shortly afterwards an angry mob approach you and said, “We’re looking for someone” and they proceeded to give you a description of that person; nobody would blame you for misdirecting the mob with a small fib, so you lied which is bad but potentially saved a life which is good. It’s all about motivation.

My favourite Supervillain of all time is Marvel’s Doctor Doom. That may surprise a few people who would assume that it would be Darth Vader from Star Wars, but no it’s Doctor Doom all day long. When the Antagonist is involved in a fuel with the Protagonist you really want to feel that you can understand where the villain is coming from. You may not agree with their methods, but you at least can relate to why they do the things that they do.
Doctor Doom wants to rule the World but unlike some greedy evil entity he doesn’t want to steal resources and make himself rich at the expense of making others poor, in fact quite the contrary. He is a sovereign monarch; he has diplomatic immunity his ambition is to bring order to the World and level up the playing field. His subjects revere him; he protects them and ensures they live the best lives possible under his reign. He wants the world to be one kingdom under Doom and you see how that would be a problem. Ultimately, it’s his sense of honour that I admire the most about the guy.
IMAGE Source: Fantastic Four #361, (Feb 1992), Marvel Comics
In Fantastic Four issue 361 “Miracle on Yancy Street” Ben Grimm “The Thing” is approached by an old friend requesting help to find his missing son. Drug addicts were going missing from Ben’s old neighbourhood. Fast forward to the reveal that it was Doctor Doom behind the abductions a battle kicks off between the two. Ben had broken his arm in an earlier adventure when Doctor Doom realised that Ben’s arm was broken he refused to continue fighting as attacking an injured foe was beneath him and he would rather battle the Thing when he was at full strength. It was also revealed that the reason that Doctor Doom was arranging for Drug addicts to be taken from the streets was because he did not want to rule a World of Drug addicted citizens and was using his scientific knowledge to find a cure.

I believe villains still need boundaries, now imagine it’s a quiet mid-week afternoon then suddenly a Bank is stormed by a team of armed robbers. What are the robbers’ objectives? To get in, get the money then get out. If they can achieve this with minimum fuss, then it’s a win. Imagine not that the Robbers have secured the premises and the Police are on the scene it’s now a stand off in my version of events if one of the Robbers started to take Wallets and jewellery from the members of the Public I would have the leader of the gang question that robber then insist that “We are here to taken money from the Bank, they are insured we do not rob personal possessions from hostages” he would then make his associate return the goods and apologies.
Suddenly he notices that one of his men is missing and then he sees a very upset and distressed female coming in crying with rips on her clothes and bruising on her arms. He then sees the missing man. He calls one of the other female hostages to attend to the woman he then takes his man into another room for “questioning” and if it is confirmed that the scene is as bad as it looked, he beats him within an inch of his life then drags this injured man to the entrance of the Bank throwing him to the Police. He then makes a leadership decision to release women, children and families keeping back some hostages to keep negotiations viable. I am not sure how the rest of the story would play out at this stage, but I really wanted to make the point that even bad guys should have boundaries.

Motivation is an important factor for both antagonists and protagonists. Marvel’s Magneto, master of magnetism and arch-nemesis of the X-Men was the leader of the brotherhood of evil mutants. It was only years later when they peeled back the layers of complexities behind Magneto’s character that you realise, he isn’t evil at all. He was a Jewish holocaust survivor and witnessed and experience horrific atrocities and these affected him deeply. He saw that those with power abused and victimised those who had none, and he vowed never to be a victim again. He saw humanity as brutal and oppressive and so when his innate powers manifested themselves, he decided to strike at the very core of this humanity that he found was so oppressive.

Timeline pieces that were longer than 500 characters:
Carnival Against Capital 1999: On June 18, 1999, an international protest was held on the day that the Group of 8 (G8) held a summit in Köln, Germany. The Group of 8 (G8) was an international political network of the most wealthy countries in the world—it consisted of the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, and France—and would meet every year to discuss issues pertaining to globalization, such as economic growth and capitalism, security, and terrorism. What became known as the “J18 Carnival Against Capital” is perhaps one of the most powerful examples of transnational activist organizing the world has seen yet. More than 40 countries participated, with over 10,000 people storming the capitals of the UK and Nigeria alone. The idea to have this protest was conceived in the UK, almost a year prior, and aimed to connect people around the world in a diverse group of protesters, as well as show all those involved or watching that the issues faced by people in countries other than their own were not so different. The day of the protest did not go quite as planned—there had been the intent to confuse the police in London by dividing the crowd into groups—but it still had a massive effect, nonetheless, and received a lot of media coverage after it had ended. The day was full of marching, protesting, battling against the police, and graffiti. The Carnival Against Capital was a massive event that did not happen spontaneously or by accident. It was highly intentional and successful in leaving its mark on history.
Battle of Seattle 1999: The Seattle WTO Protests of 1999, aka Battle of Seattle, was a series of protests that took place at the end of the year in Seattle, WA and is designated as the birth of the anti-globalization movement. One of the first international movements that was put together over the internet. Involved marching, a virtual sit-in of the WTO website, and physically chaining people together in order to disrupt WTO proceedings of neoliberal trade negotiations that would have exploited nations in the Global South.
G8 Protests July 2001: In 2001, the G8 convened in Genoa, Italy and was met with one of the largest movement demonstrations in the world to protest globalization. From July 19 to July 21, 2001, a widely diverse group of over 300,000 people participated in things such as sit-ins, marches, and even an anarchist demonstration. The police defending the convention reacted brutally. Sit-in members were attacked with tear gas and were beaten and at more boisterous demonstrations, some people were shot with live guns, resulting in the death of at least one person. Police also stormed a building where protesters were sleeping, one night, and injured the majority of those present, leaving over half of them bloodied and unable to walk. Evidence was removed the following day. This violence police retaliation was almost fascist in nature, but only angered more people around the globe and spurred them to action.
Iraq War Protests 2003: On February 15, 2003, people in over 800 cities and on every continent participated in protests against Bush’s “War on Terror” in Iraq–even a group of scientists in Antarctica held a little rally of their own in solidarity). It included marching, chanting, and facing off with the police, with a particularly large group at the foot of the UN building in New York receiving a great deal of media coverage. With the voices of millions of people at their backs, as well as some dissent from Germany and France against the war, the “Uncommitted Six,” six countries of the Global South that had historically been dependent on the Global North–Angola, Mexico, Chile, Guinea, Cameroon, and Pakistan–stood up to the United States and the Bush administration and said that they would not support his unjust war. While the collective transnational actions that took place on this day did not end the so-called “War on Terror,” it did not go unnoticed and the sheer force of the protests and those behind it showed that Bush’s actions were a part of an unnecessary evil. It was called the world’s “second super-power.”
G20 Summit Protests of London 2009: The G20 protests of 2009 in London centered around the Group of 20’s summit meeting to discuss issues such as the global economy, climate change, and the “War on Terror” that still continues to rage today. Much like the “Group of 8,” the G20 is comprised of the most wealthy and economically powerful countries of the world, which leaves out the grand majority of the world’s people who would be affected by decisions made at these meetings. It focuses a great deal on “financial stability” on a global scale, but is responsible for contributing a great deal of money to IFIs, which keep nations with weaker economies in constant cycles of debt and poverty. The protests against the G20 2009 summit included the storming of an outpost of the Royal Bank of Scotland, launching missiles, and rallying the streets against the police who fought to put them down. Approximately 5,000 people took part. Later in the day, smaller numbers of protesters faced off against police officers decked in riot gear as those present threw anything they could find at the law enforcement and chanted. Surrounding them, the police did not let the protesters leave. In the aftermath of the event, over 100 people were found to have been injured and one man, named Ian Thomlinson, was killed by an officer after being thrown to the ground.

Charles Manson in music and books, on TV: The influence of evil
Convicted mass murderer Charles Manson, while he was serving a life sentence in California for the 1969 Tate-LaBianca murders, conducts an exclusive interview with host Tom Snyder on June 12, 1981. (Photo: NBC NewsWire/NBC/NBCU Photo Bank via Getty Images)
Charles Manson — the vile human who organized a grungy cult that murdered the actress Sharon Tate and four others in her home in 1969 — has died at age 83. Manson was a petty thief and pimp who carved a swastika in his forehead and babbled angrily about a coming race war. Yet he achieved a perverse kind of glory as a pop presence, exerting a pull on numerous musicians, writers, producers, and actors. Scores of TV movies and books have been written about him; his sputtered music career fascinated some famous musicians.
The key to Manson’s infamy is that he committed his most notable crimes in Los Angeles and its environs. In dispatching his so-called “family” of broken-down, brainwashed disciples to a showbiz-posh neighborhood in Benedict Canyon, Manson knew that the house he’d pointed his minions toward had once been occupied by Terry Melcher, a famous Hollywood record producer. Manson blamed Melcher, among others, for the failure of his recording career. Manson had befriended Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys and played Wilson his songs, hoping the Beach Boy would help him land a music contract. Nothing happened, although Wilson did record a song of Manson’s, “Cease to Exist,” whose title Wilson changed to “Never Learn Not to Love.”
youtube
That Manson had rubbed his dirty shoulders with the Hollywood famous brought him instant attention upon his arrest. When he turned out to be a vicious, long-haired psychopath who’d emerged from the dank alleys of San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury hippie scene, Manson’s place in pop culture might have been predicted. When it was discovered that he referred to a coming apocalypse as “Helter Skelter,” a phrase borrowed from the Beatles, his notoriety was cemented. Musicians such as Marilyn Manson (where do you think Brian Hugh Walter got half of his stage name?) and Guns N’ Roses, looking to tap in to a vein of easy evil, recorded Charles Manson songs. Film buffs took notice that the site of the Manson Family compound was Spahn Ranch, which in earlier decades had been the frequent location for movie and TV shoots, especially Westerns: Duel In The Sun as well as episodes of The Lone Ranger and Bonanza were filmed there.
The most famous book about Manson is Helter Skelter, by attorney Vincent Bugliosi and Curt Gentry. But the better book is The Family, written in 1971 by the poet and journalist Ed Sanders. Subtitled “The Story of Charles Manson’s Dune Buggy Attack Battalion,” Sanders’ book captures the countercultural atmosphere whose idealism could also turn rancid, and end up a petri dish for Manson’s nihilism. And the best book of all may be Jeff Guinn’s 2013 Manson: The Life and Times of Charles Manson, scrupulously researched and reported.
On television, Manson became a prime “get” — a much sought-after interviewee for TV personalities ranging from Diane Sawyer to Tom Snyder, whose 1981 session with Manson is creepy stuff indeed.
youtube
Manson inspired one entire TV series: Aquarius, a two-season show starring David Duchovny as a cop chasing down Manson (played by Gethin Anthony) along the dusty trail to Spahn Ranch. Numerous TV dramas used Manson, or fictionalized versions of Manson, as subplot-metaphors for wayward youths who fall under the spell of evil seducers. Lost’s Jeremy Davies played Manson in Helter Skelter, a 2004 CBS adaptation of Bugliosi’s book. Manson was also used for comedy: On The Ben Stiller Show in the early 1990s, Bob Odenkirk played the criminal in a recurring segment called “Ask Manson.”
youtube
In recent years, attention has turned to some of the women Manson attracted to his cult. The Lifetime movie Manson’s Lost Girls, from 2016, is typical of this sub-division of Manson studies. Manson lore has also received a boost via the current true-crime boom, with podcasts such as You Must Remember This pouring hours of Manson poison into your earbuds.
Does Manson deserve to occupy a place in our minds? Of course not. But his awful crimes, the lives he destroyed, and the sense we try to make of it all continue to reach out to us and won’t allow us to forget him.

涼しい!
This is supposed to be the Huey season, and this time, we finally get an episode focused solely on the red sibling. In fact, the blue and green siblings don't even appear in this episode beyond Huey mentioning "the brothers" one time. We already start off with an issue Huey seems to have: he's so by the book, that at the Junior Woodchuck's celebration of National S'more Day, he has to specifically measure the graham cracker to marshmallow combo.
This overly specific measuring is made fun of by a bully who bares a striking resemblance to one of the Beagle Boys. The credits call him "Bully Beagle", though he doesn't appear long enough to reveal any kind of connection to them besides his looks. He does appear long enough to compare Huey to a robot, as he marvels at his own concoction that features many marshmallows and some donuts stuck between them. Everyone else laughs, because even a Beagle Boy is more relatable than him.
Definitely not speaking of robots, we get to see the return of Boyd, who is definitely a real boy and wants to be friends with Huey. To Huey's delight, he shows his true knowledge by commenting that his S'mores stick is cut perfectly to Woodchuck guidelines, and knows a guideline so well that he's able to speak it at the same time as Huey. It's no wonder that he's an expert with the way of the Junior Woodchucks, saying that he practically has it downloaded to his head!
Relieved to see another boy who follows the Woodchuck guidebook cover to cover, he tells Boyd to ready the fire for some by-the-book s'mores making. With all of those specific denials, even the people who didn't see his debut episode can repeat in their heads, "he's going to shoot lasers, he's going to shoot lasers, he's going to shoot lasers..."
Yup, he shot lasers. Thankfully, Huey has his back turned, claiming that their totally non-robotic and yet rule following selves make them a rare breed. Unfortunately, “rare breed” ended up causing a glitch in Boyd's memory banks, causing him to use his laser eyes in a way Huey couldn’t ignore, causing a fire. In a forest. Smokey Bear wouldn’t be too happy about how much this gets brushed off.
Huey makes it to Gyro's underwater lab, apparently keeping Boyd's eyes closed the entire time, to talk to Dr. Gearloose about that laser eye problem. Fenton Crackshell-Cabrera, the intern, tells him that he's a scientist, and he should be able to help...until Boyd opens his eyes and has lasers tear through one of the windows, which Manny the Headless Man-Horse has to lock up with metal doors.
He is at least ready enough to give him red sunglasses that stop the lasers, just like that character that Disney may or may not have the film rights to. Fenton decides to elevate this to Dr. Gearloose, who reveals that he has a connection to Boyd...
...as revealed by him backing away in fear.
Gyro: Manny, get this dangerous machine out of my lab!
Manny: (morses) Which one?
This is an actual second joke from Manny the Headless Man-Horse, even if it should be pretty clear which of the inevitably dangerous machines he's talking about.
Revealing his actual name to be 2BO, Gearloose tells Huey that he was one of his failed experiments. Or, rather, it was one of his failed experiments. Right from his very first interaction, it's clear there's a huge contrast between Gyro Gearloose's relation with what is essentially his own child and Huey's new friendship. The C3PO-like name, and him using pronouns more fitting for objects.
Huey does call out a few things about Gyro's behavior, and one of them is that he's usually saying that the inventions that were actively trying to kill people are just "wildly misunderstood." However, Gyro just knows 2BO is different, and this sudden personality change will be justified later. However, he does seem to have a sort of soft spot for the bad robot, as he offers a fix for that thing's problems. Unfortunately, he needs more fitting equipment than what he has in this lab, and the only place that would have it is the lab of his old mentor...in Japan.
No time for an opening, just the logo in Japanese and that's it. That's right, they're going to Tokyo, Japan, or Tokyolk, Japan. Not sure how to put that in kanji.
As soon as they land in Tokyolk, Gyro immediately gets slammed to a car by Inspector Tezuka. Besides the homage to Astro Boy creator Osamu Tezuka in her name, she's totally supposed to be Inspector Zenigata from Lupin The 3rd. A person who even looks like the titular guy Zenigata was chasing after cameos throughout this episode, but she has far more pressing matters at her hands, like capturing the crook that was making killer robots that destroy cities. As soon as one potential killer robot nearly gets caught, Lil Bulb distracts her with some binary graffiti and itself, and they run off to the lab.
Using GizmoDuck to break through the now abandoned old lab, him showing off he can partially transform with just the word “Blath”, Boyd can't help but say how familiar this place is. The intern just can't help but check out his boss's old stuff, too, putting on his old lab coat and looking at dusty microscopes.
Using the equipment, Gyro hooks Boyd up to a chair. To stop his malfunctioning for good, Gyro has to search through his memory banks to find his core. This means we get to see his past memories from reverse order, Memento style. It's not necessarily Rashomon style, but maybe that's just not how I remembered it.
We get to see Boyd's last two owners. Along with Doofus Drake, who is trying to ruin his mother's pearls, we see Mark Beaks, the guy that was trying to pass off Boyd as his, um . I must say, while it's not surprising that Mark Beaks didn't invent him like he said he did, as that's just his shtick for the last two seasons, it is a wonder that Boyd just happened to look exactly like a young version of him even before Mark Beaks took him in.
However, even an evil crook like Mark Beaks knew that 2BO is a sorry name for a little kid robot, and he was the one that would give him something close to a real name. He also didn't want to even touch him, never mind give him a hug, but he is at least smart enough to not touch garbage. By the way, that line about not touching really aged well, didn't it?
Gyro even reminds us of this contrast, as Huey remarks that Boyd must have had a terrible life living with a creep and a crook. Gyro simply remarks,
Gyro: It doesn't feel anything!
Interesting to have him be in the shadows in that shot, too, as if to show that he's the person with the wrong opinions here. This robot hatred ended up being so blatant, that Lil Bulb shorts out. This ends up distracting Gyro, leading to Fenton to come up with his own plan for Boyd: make him a superhero! It's a good time to do that, as Fenton's GizmoDuck arm notifies him of a robbery. They run off, not noticing that the security cameras happen to be on. Hmm, it is rather curious that this old lab still seems to have working equipment, as if the electricity bill is still getting paid.
As soon as those security cameras are shown, that bill payer is revealed to be Dr. Akita, the mentor of Gyro Gearloose, and the one scientist Gyro himself has interned for. We did see little glimpses of him in Boyd's memory glitch from the opening scene, but this is the first time we get to hear him speak. Anyone can guess he's evil; not only is he staring evilly at his old intern walking into his building, he's revealed to have an anime avatar on his computer. Ooh, the true mark of evil!
We cut to that robbery from earlier, as two pigs are about to be chased by two different cops. Wait, that shouldn't be right. Kind of missing the opportunity for Fenton to shout "thering Blatherskite", but it leads to a cool chase scene nonetheless, with GizmoDuck rolling around, and Boyd using his robotic biking abilities to bike across walls. GizmoDuck ends up capturing one of the bad guys, but the other?
Well, Fenton didn’t really get to the “what to do with the criminal after they get cornered” part, so Boyd politely asks her to take back that money that she obviously must have taken by mistake. Of course, she does not oblige. GizmoDuck does give him a pointer that the standing down should come after the criminal gets dealt with, but Boyd simply doesn’t want to hurt people. Well, so much for that plan.
It's here where Gyro fixes up Lil Bulb, and realizes that Fenton, the kid, and the not-so-kid are gone.
Gyro: IN-TEEEEERN!
Uh oh, Spaghetti-O's! That is kind of a note to Gyro's character, too. He doesn't call his intern by his name, either, and it seems he would use it pronouns for him if he could get away with it.
The next day, while Inspector Tezuka reveals that she caught the other burglar and will give that guy in the robot suit a stern talking to, Boyd would rather enjoy the sights of Tokyolk than go back to the lab again. Oh no, back to the lab again. You messed up, back to the lab again. ...sorry, that song will forever be stuck in my head.
Anyway, it's montage time! Not every scene has a joke about Boyd being "wired a little differently", as Huey put it earlier in the episode, as there are some relatively normal scenes sprinkled with Boyd literally sucking up bowls of Udon like a vacuum cleaner. I do mean literally, and I always mean literally.
It all ends with Huey on the observation area of Tokyolk Tower, remarking that hanging out with him proves that he's not a killer robot. Apparently, that's the best thing anyone has ever said to him, and that's sadly fitting considering his last three owners. As Huey puts his picture in the JWD, the wind blows it away. Huey grabs it, only to lose his footing on the tower, falling from it.
Left with no choice, Boyd had to show off one of his killer robot abilities again, but this time to prevent an accidental killing: his rocket feet! Unfortunately, they run into Gyro Gearloose, Fenton Crackshell-Cabrera and Inspector NoFirstName Tezuka, who all now seem to share the same opinion: those rocket feet just mean that his combat systems are active again. Gyro decides to show him the memory he was trying to get to.
He was made to be a robot that defended Tokyolk with his special abilities, like his laser eyes and rocket boots. No word on whether or not he has machine guns in his butt, though. However, much like his future inventions. We learn that this was the first robot that became evil, and ever since, his penchant for making robots continued. This gives his attitude towards his own creation a little more weight.
As an aside, while we get glimpses of his past self, this is the first time I was able to put a screenshot of it. I must say that it's a neat touch that Past Gyro looks like the original Gyro from the comics, and, by extension, the Gyro from the original 1987 cartoon. It goes a bit further than that, actually, and I'm not going to spoil it here.
This scene also reveals that fix was more like a deletion, and that makes Boyd real angry. Well, that, or maybe that anger was artificially caused by this episode's real villain.
No, not Glomgold, though I do wonder where he has been since this season started. Apparently, he's been selling Japanese energy drinks like Schwarzenegger did back in the 90's!
No, it was Dr. Akita, of course, and he has become a total bad guy since the day Boyd destroyed Tokyolk. He was hiding in the shadows, though that's mostly because living underground has given him an aversion to sunlight. I'm a little disappointed that gag doesn't continue after this scene.
This leads to the seemingly once an episode fight scene with a bunch of the characters we know and love and will still love. Specifically, this is GizmoDuck vs. the evil 2BO/Boyd. It is very anime fight scene, but not in the "lol isn't anime so wacky" kind of way. There's even a well animated Macross Missile Massacre, as shown here; they really knew how to do it.
A big reveal happens in the middle of this, and I will admit it's one of those cliche "the one part of the memory that changes absolutely everything that was just ignored for no adequate reason" scenes. It’s not that I don’t appreciate it, though, as this is where that "further than that" comes in.
To make it as vague as possible, this basically puts Gyro in the position to learn something in the end of the episode. In fact, this is more of a Gyro episode than a Huey episode. Sure, it's more of a Huey episode than, say, the Mervana one, but it's not like his character changed significantly in the course of this episode. I mean, Huey saw him as a kid since the beginning.
Can Gyro see his creation as a kid and potentially fix that "becoming evil" problem? The conclusion is rather sudden, mostly because they seemingly had to wrap it up in under 3 minutes, but it's still satisfying nonetheless. It changes the status quo even more than one might expect, too, but I already given away enough.
How does it stack up?
It's a great story about a character that may have only really existed just as a gag in one episode, with a great use of anime influences that never become the usual "lol Japan so wacky" stereotypes. No doubt about it, this is a 5 Scrooges episode.
Next, oh boy, another Ragnarok. Can't be any worse than the last time I had to cover one.

It can feel like there’s nothing contemporary out there that really matches its relatable drama and compelling villainy. But it's easy to find if you know where to look. Here’s our list of ten great crime movies that share some of the show’s best qualities.
10 Shot Caller
Ric Roman Waugh’s prison thriller stars Game of Thrones actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as a successful California stockbroker who pleas down to a short prison sentence after a fatal car accident. Once inside the system, however, he finds himself at the mercy of prison’s gangs, particularly the local White Supremacists, and is forced to sink further and further into a life of violent crime in order to survive.
The harsh realities and almost Kafkaesque absurdity of the system that the main character finds himself trapped within echo many of Breaking Bad’s social commentaries. Not to mention the all too ignored White Supremacist element in American criminal culture.

9 Life Without Principle
Johnnie To’s Hong Kong crime drama follows a loosely-connected ensemble of small-time players (a cop, a low-level gangster and a bank teller) as they face morally compromising situations in their collective quest to simply get by in modern life.
Fans of Breaking Bad’s focus on the mundane reality of crime, and the frantic desperation that spawns it, will find a lot of similarities in Life Without Principle. Particularly in its examination of moral equivalency and guilt. To’s following crime movie, Drug War, also being worthy of note due to its similar subject matter to Breaking Bad, despite a more traditional cops and robbers structure.
8 Gangs of Wasseypur (Parts 1 & 2)
If you’re looking for something a little different in your sprawling crime saga then look no further than Anurag Kashyap’s gangster epic, Gangs of Wasseypur, in its complete, two-part glory. Spanning over fifty years of bloody rivalry in the titular Wasseypur neighborhood of India, it sets its scenes and conflicts in rich detail. Ultimately facilitating a gargantuan story of iconic personalities and bitter family feuds.
Wasseypur’s desert landscape and the movie’s shocking violence will bring back memories of Breaking Bad’s alternate take on the kind of tragic crime fable that was more often than not reserved for the American mafia or the metropolitan streets of tourist hubs like New York, Paris or Hong Kong.
7 Animal Kingdom
Writer and director David Michôd's Australian crime drama concerns a highly dysfunctional family of bank robbers in Melbourne, as they face extinction from a trigger-happy police squad that’s out to finish them once and for all. After the overdose of his mother, 17-year-old Joshua Cody finds himself flung back into this family that his mother attempted to keep him from and he’s irrevocably sucked into their paranoid, murderous, world.
James Frecheville’s performance as Joshua will no doubt conjure up images of Jesse Pinkman being in way over his head. But the whole ensemble, including Ben Mendelsohn’s terrifying sociopath and Jacki Weaver’s unforgettably evil matriarch, evokes the flawless network of performances that went into making the realistic ecosystem of Breaking Bad's drama. Unsurprisingly, the movie has since been adapted into a US-set TV show.

6 Trainspotting
Breaking Bad was a show that you could feel adapting and experimenting to find whatever worked best for a particular idea whilst always striving to feel cinematic. This often draws comparisons to Quentin Tarantino’s mish mashing of genres and techniques (and there are a lot of straight-up references to Tarantino in the show). But there are many distinct similarities, intentional or not, to be found between Breaking Bad and Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting.
There’s a strong resemblance between Boyle’s overall use of cameras, particularly smaller ones attached to actors or props, and Michael Slovis’ cinematography on Breaking Bad. With each of their honest, heartbreaking and wildly creative portraits of drug culture and addiction being of particular note, seen especially in Aaron Paul's and Ewan McGregor's performances as young, disaffected, men trapped within them.
5 Collateral
Jamie Foxx is the underachiever under the wing of a bad element, and Tom Cruise the psychotic mastermind, in Michael Mann’s story of a cab driver forced to drive around and assist a hitman through one night of work across Los Angeles. There’s no drug business but there is more duality, lies, manipulation and towering criminal persona than you can shake a stick at.
The confined space that the lead duo finds itself in, like Breaking Bad’s RV, pushes the pair of actors to create the biggest fireworks out of their characters’ dialogue and dynamic. And sparks do fly. Foxx was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at that year’s Oscars, losing to Morgan Freeman but going on to win Best Actor for Ray that same night.
4 Good Time
Josh and Benny Safdie’s whirlwind crime spree through New York is very reminiscent of Breaking Bad’s DIY, think-on-your-feet perspective of serious crime. Robert Pattinson creates another protagonist so bad that you can’t help but be impressed. His amateur bank robber will do anything to protect his brother and the entire city becomes a playground, or battlefield, in his mission to avoid the cops and get paid.
It’s rare to see a protagonist as devoid of morality as Pattinson's is in anything, let alone a feature film. The realism not only accentuating this but, like Breaking Bad, creating a world where the sharp turns in the story seem all the more genuine and incredible.

3 Nameless Gangster: Rules of the Time
Yoon Jong-bin’s chronicling of a particularly corrupt moment in South Korea’s history serves as a fascinating character study that, like Breaking Bad, highlights how the biggest forces in the volatile world of crime are often the wannabes.
Choi Min-sik provides a Bryan Cranston-esque icon for the era with his performance as a minor customs official with aspirations of criminal kingpinery. His character’s mixture of impressive ingenuity and utter buffoonery demonstrating a range of emotion and dedication to the performance that feels once in a lifetime level good.
2 A Prophet
Being mostly set in prison doesn’t make Jacques Audiard’s modern crime epic feel any less far-reaching. Like Breaking Bad, it’s bursting with intelligent tricks to make its world feel more real whilst never letting that world feel predictable. Sudden bursts of intense, almost bizarre, violence can inject themselves into the monotony of day to day life at any moment.
From a prison cell, Tahar Rahim’s nobody finds his way in a vast underworld of warring factions, cultures and languages in modern France. As Breaking Bad does, A Prophet serves as much as a time capsule as it does as entertainment.
1 Sicario
If you took all of the tensest, most violent moments from Breaking Bad, condensed them and dialed up their cinematic features into overdrive, then you’d get something like Sicario. Denis Villeneuve’s brief glimpse into the deepest, darkest recesses of the criminal underworld that stretches across nations and governments, is a web of manipulation and swift, ruthless, actions.
Fans of Dave Porter’s pulse-pounding score in Breaking Bad’s crisis scenes will enjoy Jóhann Jóhannsson’s intensely ominous magnum opus from Sicario. With legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins, similarly, outdoing himself to stunningly convey a world of limitless deception and almost religious evil within the US/Mexico drug trade.
