mason's   never   done   a   road   trip   before   &   to   be   quite   honest   ,   he   never   had   much   interest   in   it   until   hannah   decided   to   try   &   convince   him to join her.   like   most   things surrounding his best friend   ,   he   couldn't   bear   to   say   no   to   her ,   &   soon they   made   their   way   across   the   country   ,   coast   to   coast   &   all   the   way   back   ,   eating   the   best   /   worst   foods   ,   seeing   the   sights   &   enjoying   each   other's   company.   it   was   a   long   trip   ,   but   a   fun   one   for   sure.   not   big   eventful fun   ,   but   the   kind   of   fun   where   it's   both   relaxing   &   mundane   ,   yet   still   new.   they   were   on   their   way   back   to   new   york   but   decided   to   make   a   pit   stop   in   a   small   little   hotel   for   a   few   days   ,   needing   a   chance   to   recharge   after   so   much   driving.   there's   still   a   little   time   for   something   crazy   to   happen   on   their   vacation   ,   though   honestly   ,   mason   doubts   that   could   even   happen   in   a   place   like   this.   the   hotel   isn't   five   star   ,   but   it's   not   great   either.   the   best   thing   about   this   place   is   the   continental   breakfast   they   offer   &   even   that's   questionable   at   best.

As soon as her hand twisted the doorknob and the door creaked open, Azzi’s heart ached. She swore she could smell the lingering scent of Paige’s perfume, even though the rational part of her mind knew that Paige hadn’t stepped foot in the room for almost an entire year.

Although Paige hadn’t grown up in this room, her mom had it reserved for her when she came back during the summer, giving her daughter the liberty to decorate the space however she liked. And now Azzi appreciated it more than ever, because looking at the posters plastered with UConn greats and husky logos felt as familiar to her as home. Now only one thing was missing.

Azzi flopped on the bed, tired from the plane ride over. She cursed when she realized she’d forgotten her charger at home. Hopefully Paige had a spare one, she thought as she started rummaging through the drawers of her beside cabinet. As soon as she opened the first drawer, though, a polaroid fell out.

Azzi’s heart doubled in size when she flipped the polaroid over to find a photo of herself from the Minnesota state fair from two summers ago. In it, she was holding a cone of ice cream, chocolate sauce dripping all over her fingers. Tucked under her elbow was the stuffed animal that Paige insisted on winning for her every year (and Azzi never got tired of it). She had been smiling hard, her eyes crinkled as she stared past the camera. Shaking her head, Azzi snapped a photo of the polaroid.

Azzi bit her cheek, trying not to beam from Paige’s text. “Azzi! You ready for lunch, hon?” Amy’s voice called from downstairs. Azzi stuffed the polaroid back in the drawer and clambered down to the kitchen.

“Hey, Amy. Thank you again for letting me stay,” Azzi said, going in for another hug.

Amy airily waved her hand, leading Azzi to the dining table. “No worries at all. We‘ve got a lot of exciting stuff planned for this week. Mini golf tomorrow with the kids, then this new restaurant is opening up on Tuesday and I thought it would be a nice date night for you and Paige so I already made a reservation for the two of you!”

Amy continued talking excitedly about their stay at Montana, and Azzi appreciated it, she really did, but she was also exhausted from the plane ride and all she wanted to do was be in Paige’s arms after way too much time apart. The ESPYs photos that Paige had posted an hour ago didn’t help either. Her girlfriend had looked so damn good, her hair up in that style Azzi loved, and Azzi had spent more time than she was willing to admit staring at the photo, wanting to run her hands through that hair.

Later that night, Azzi put on Love and Basketball on her laptop as she got ready for bed. Paige couldn’t facetime because she was at a party, but Azzi still wanted a little piece of her girlfriend with her before she fell asleep, just a little something to make her dreams a little sweeter.

“She’s asleep, isn’t she?”

Amy wrapped her daughter in a hug. “Don’t you dare wake her up.”

Paige shook her head. She was slightly disappointed she wouldn’t be able to talk to Azzi tonight, but she was glad the younger girl was getting her rest. She slipped into the room as quietly as she could, her heartbeat speeding up as soon as she saw the lump on the bed.

Kneeling down, Paige brushed her fingertips over the crease in Azzi’s forehead, trying to smooth over the worry lines. Azzi looked ethereal in her sleep, the moonlight from the window casting a glow over her face and illuminating the sharpness of her jaw and the pinkness of her lips. Paige pressed a light kiss on her cheek, trying to be as gentle as possible, but before she knew it, Azzi was stirring.

Her eyes slowly fluttered open. “Paige?” she groaned, hands going to rub her eyes.

Paige smiled guiltily. “Hi, baby,” she breathed out. “I didn’t mean to wake you.”

“No, it’s okay.” Azzi reached for Paige, still half asleep, and Paige sat at the edge of the bed and let her girlfriend nuzzle her face into her stomach.

Paige ran her fingers through Azzi’s hair, marveling at how she managed to smell so good all the time. “Is now a good time to say that you owe me $10?” she whispered.

“Shut up,” Azzi whined, her fingers jabbing at Paige’s ribs but failing to do much damage with her sluggishly lethargic movements.

Paige chuckled before brushing one last kiss against Azzi’s temple. “I’m gonna get ready for bed,” she said softly. “I’ll be right back.”

“No.” Azzi’s voice was surprisingly demanding considering how sleepy she was. “You woke me up, now you’re staying.”

Paige rolled her eyes. She hated the idea of getting into her sheets while in her dirty airport clothes, but once Azzi’s hands clutched tighter around her waist, she knew she was a goner. Sighing, she slipped under the covers with her girlfriend. Azzi happily burrowed herself in Paige’s chest, weaving her leg between the blonde’s. Her hand slipped up Paige’s shirt and rested there, palm on her abdomen, and Paige shivered at the bare contact.

“I really did try to stay up,” Azzi whispered, already falling asleep again.

“It’s okay. Go back to sleep, hm?” Paige tightened her hold around Azzi. The last two weeks had been ridiculously fun, getting to see Nika again, going to partnership events, and presenting at the ESPYs, but this was by far her favorite part - when she and Azzi were so tangled up, every part of their bodies interwoven, their limbs and hair and even the beating of their hearts connecting, it felt like they were breathing as one.

eggman is around 100 years old and has been butting heads with gun for control of angel island the entire time

angel island is 1 main island (master emerald) and 7 smaller islands (1 chaos emerald each), GUN hid a chaos emerald on each island to keep them from being easily discoverable and to use their power to maintain the barrier, originally built by gerald as a safety feature

GUN has total control of 3 of the islands, they are more cyberpunk in terms of infrastructure, the further islands are called The Wilds, where mobians inhabit the old buildings from the flood. sonic fights to keep gun from expanding their reach further

Ghost, the head of gun, is an ancient vampire and one of the first Mobian vampires. scourned by what the mutations did to them, they want to kill the vampires of angel island to have their own peaceful domain far away from the surface world

shadow behaves differently depending on how close he is to GUN territory, before Ghost had lost shadow, his mind was altered to better fit Ghosts mission. he was meant to be used as a weapon to hunt and kill vampires, the closer he is to the city, the stronger Ghosts mind control over him is. though ghost isnt aware shadow is awake and running around yet, the mind control is a passive state shadow is in and doesnt realize. he only has a stronger drive to kill near the city.

first arc was meant to just be generally kinda silly, it wasnt meant to be super serious- hoax and shadow make their blood deal in order to get hoax to stop stealing shadows blood bags knukcles, defensive on shadows behalf, clocks hoax so hard he turns back into sonic, thus being the first person to learn about hoax being sonic (outside of amy and tails, who helped come up with hoax)

knuckles learns about the master emerald buried under his fucking pizza store. what the hell. and starts learning about his past as the last echidna from tikal, whos been haunting the pizza place until she was able to get knuckles attention

amy really wants to prove her devotion to sonic by making him a Light ring, a ring with magic infused strong enough to fully protect him from the sun. she is not a powerful enough witch to do it so she starts researching

tails is a shithead and cosmo tries to teach him about friendship

sonic starts learning about chaos emeralds while dealing with eggman etc etc

one of eggmans plots was to mess with the moon pull during a blood moon, driving up bloodlust in vampires and starting chaos

tails vampire reveal

rouge discovers sol and introduces mephiles and silver etc

eggman has a blood mining operation in sol (bc the planet is a living creature)

the chaotix send tails to gay baby jail , gets broken out by silver mephiles

amy starts getting real desperate bc she keep failing to make the ring, she starts checking out dark magic due to her own shortcomings, being suggested by eggman who is interested in the ring himself. she finds sol alongside sonic and starts researching more magic with blaze and other castle scholars. an attempt at dark magic goes wrong with blaze, the queen of sol. amy is exiled and back to square one, now even more desperate, she keeps trying with dark magic. unknowingly, poisoning her own magic and corrupting the gemstone embedded in sonics staff

shadow starts getting a teeny tiny bit comfortable with hoax, and also is informed about the master emerald by knuckles. tikal remembers him and he starts to realize something isnt quite right in his memories. time for a series of unfortunate events

he delivers pizza to the eggman himself, who talks remorse about what he put shadow through, but angles it in a way to spark further hatred for sonic in shadow, stating sonic influence is what made him have regrets

amys dark magic usage starts corrupting hoax himself, because he is a product of amys magic. the darkness slowly chews away at his mind, and if they dont fix him, sonic will become a mindless servant of dark gaia forever. this is the shadow hoax reveal. It takes all of the friends & shadow to be able to fight and wrangle hoax, once the gemstone is smashed, shadow gets to see hoaxs true form, sonic. shadow tries to KILL HIS ASS

mephiles, the shape shifter, has taken interest in shadow and his determined to make his life more miserable by shifting into rouge and biting him, exposing to shadow rouge has been hiding being a vampire from him the entire time theyve known each other shadow fucking snaps and fucks off to go work for GUN, all vampires are the same lying conniving bastards, and he wants to kill them very dead

shadow captures sonic and he gets held in the central GUN base. sonic finds out Ghost has been not only killing vampires, but draining their lifeforce to keep themselves alive bc theyre old as shit. rouge is also exposed as a vampire (the chaotix supervisor) and gets held in a cell as well. the chaotix think this whole thing is fucked up actually and bust their queen outta there. knuckles and Co come to save sonic, shadow and knuckles have a stand off about both being the protectors of the island and how their friendship has gone out the window if knuckles chooses sonic. Knuckles escapes with sonic

The realizations DO NOT STOP COMING. BOOM. GUN DOCUMENTS. maria was a vampire womp womp. gun killed her for it. Shadow is horrified and the memories start flooding back. Ghost doesnt like this. Get in the Suit Boy. we are gonna kill these heathens <3 ! mephiles takes control of shadows body but no one is aware bc hes inside the fnaf suit. terrible day for him mephiles is gonna use the eclispe canon to drill to the earths core and reunite with iblis ! the only reason he was in sol in the first place was bc he thought blaze was the iblis trigger

everyone is OBVIOUSLY trying to stop this including eggman what the hell shadow this isnt worth it what the fuck

mephiles casually tosses shadows body into the core of the earth once hes done with him and woah. silver and sonic solaris fight woahhhhh vine boom vine boom

arc 3 !

no more angel island barrier, sonic has left to pursue eggman on the surface since hes up to no good, leaving the protection of angel island to knuckles. amy has also left for the surface to spend time on her own and try to learn magic for herself

shadow , barely alive, is fighting his way tooth and nail from the core of the earth.

a year of time passes and during that year- sonic gets up to little adventures, shadow learns to live life on the surface knowing all of the truths about himself now. they both realize they kinda had a crush on the other guy.... damn thats unfortunate.

Ghost no longer has the chaos emeralds but has Created the phantom ruby as a replacement, and has raised infinite from the dead to be its bearer. they create a fake Sh4dow. infinite gets to live out his tormenting shadows life fanfic for fucking killing him !! smh . infinte also uses Sh4dow to infiltrate Sol, Ghost has just discovered the pocket dimension on Their island and wants it gone. This is Shadows sol apartment btw. the fake bought it and he just. took it.

things are gradually getting worse on angel island and both sonic and shadow return. shadow is informed of the fake and teams up with rouge and knuckles to get rid of it flower ball happens around here, Sh4dow trying to fuck up sol somehow and shadow has to stop him. amongus time sonics been flirting with the wrong guy for a while. :{ embarrassing.

i like the characters and i like what they have going on but like man,,,, all of the surrounding context just feels so miserably hopeless, it was all for nothing and i just. i want to sleep forever

SUMMARY:

all will be revealed as the story progresses >:) i was intentionally vague in that ask because it hasnt been revealed in the story yet what caused you two to fall nearly out years ago, but that said im a yapper HAHAHA

your role as his childhood friend is significant bc u are tied to his past in japan, a place and culture he has very conflicting feelings about

he thinks you don't need him in your life esp because you're so confusing and indecisive about what you want from him

you both were very toxic for eo during your situationship.

There is narrative purpose as to why I figured a childhood friend would fit in well with Ultraman: Rising's plot in itself

the movie is very family-centric, and a lot of how kenji achieves peace with himself in the film is by reconnecting with the past, be it his family or the culture he left behind

while i figured that it would be fun to write a reluctant team-up to lovers, bc ill be able to play around w kenji's personality pre-Emi, i also didnt see the place of a romance forming while he's struggling being a single mom

but i also wanted the story to take place during the movie's run bc i wanted to include Emi since she plays a big part in us learning who Ken is, so writing a fic that starts after the film didnt feel in the cards for me

since kenji grows as a person by the end of the film through making peace with his conflicting identities and his tumultuous past, i thought having a childhood best friend would make sense since i dont think he has the space to introduce anyone new in his life

bc reader is a childhood friend who he is meant to be close to, i cant write kenji interacting with reader the same way he is at the start of the film because there is a familiarity that breaks down his walls— which caused me to have a dilemma about how to characterize him

it also made me a bit sad that i cant write full-on ken sato the "egomaniac" bc i think thatll be fun since he's such a boyfailure

but that means that we see a softer ken when he interacts with reader, someone who is a bit more vulnerable with showing that he strives for further connections in his life even if he wants to look like he can do it all by himself

Kenji feels alone and disconnected from everyone, including you

it's also clear to the audience that kenji doesnt have any friends, and anyone he's friendly with is probably friends with him on a surface level. Ami states in their first interview that he is known as someone who keeps others at a distance, and who is untouchable

the team behind Ultraman: Rising did state that there is a deleted scene where he is clubbing, which is meant to show that he feels alone even in a sea of bodies. and his dad in the movie isnt surprised that he is throwing parties at his house, so it just clues us in that he probably lived life with very shallow connections and has filled his time with materialistic pursuits (e.g. his car collection...what he need a mclaren for)

i decided to make the reader someone from the 1% for two reasons: first being so that i can explain why her and kenji meet up over the years (i see a lot of friends who migrated to north america only once a year and we're still close!), and second, because i wanted you to be on the same playing field if not higher playing field than him.

Ken puts up the front that he doesn't need anyone else, but he is insecure about how he thinks you don't need him.

bc u have ur own things going on!! u have ur own friends

what makes it worse is that u genuinely think that kenji is the same. u think that since he's very successful, he would have his own thing

i havent touched up on it much yet, but it's very evident to kenji that you will readily pick yourself over him, which isn't a bad thing but it reminds him when his dad picked Ultraman over keeping his family together

ken feels like he can never be anyone's first choice or priority, and your situationship messes this up further

I haven't touched much on what happened between them yet in the story because it's building up to it, but

it soon feels for ken that youre only seeking him out on convenience. that he doesnt matter to you beyond what his body can do for you

bc spoiler: you are the villain in the situationship! you're the one who insists that everything is casual yet you keep the line blurry

^ karma is gonna get to u soon in the main storyline ure gonna be dry heaving when u realize u actually do want something with him

your constant back and forth with him will be revealed in the flashbacks... you not wanting more than a casual relationship yet youre talking abt what it would be like if you two got married???

Spoiler but during the situationship years, you're also the first one to say "I Love You" ROMANTICALLY yet youll later on backtrack and say that you didnt mean it in that way

can you blame him for getting confused and insecure about where you stand and whether or not he actually matters to anyone.

it doesnt help that his presence in your life is actively harming your reputation and career.

in ch8, it's briefly mentioned that ur media hate train is caused by ppl who are paying for bad press abt u starting from when you were 18. if you remember ch3-4, kenji freaks out abt a new article abt u two, and ch6 he was conscious of what others were saying.

one thing i want to elaborate in a separate post is that ken is AVOIDANT ATTACHMENT and reader is written to have DISORGANIZED ATTACHMENT.

Even if Kenji is avoidant due to his trauma of abandonment (e.g. self-reliant, avoids social connections), he can't help but yearn to be with you

so it's so confusing to him bc with everyone else, he would want to leave first. and he's close to leaving you so many times

yet you keep making these promises, saying sweet things about how much you need him, that he cant help but get roped into it a bit

When he is younger, he's fully aware that it is not a healthy mindset, but even if you're just using him at least it means that he still gets to be in your life. It makes him feel needed.

in the present timeline, sometimes those thoughts definitely cross his mind but at present he is focusing on maintaining the boundary you guys set about strictly being friends

So far I hope you caught in the story [as of ch8] from the subtext or dialogue that

in the present timeline, you are both 26 years old

the situationship started when you were 16 and lasted until you were 23

bc ure both high profile starting when you were 18, and u both publicly seem a lot closer than what ure claiming to be, it is well-documented that you two kind of go back and forth with each other (think justin and selena/shawn mendes and camila cabello)

(a new photo recently surfaced of shawn and camila together at Copa América and ppl were kind of confused as to whether or not they got back together again after breaking up for like the fourth time and i was like omg... home base core...)

when you both were 23, three years ago, you two had a really bad falling out caused by your previous situationship

it caused you officially end it for good, and while you maintained your friendship for those three years you weren't able to properly see each other face to face (partly. bc covid is canon in the fic HAHAHA but i havent talked abt it)

yall dont know how to act around eo anymore like why a little eye contact making u nervous .... yall had ur privates in eo's mouths (kenji munch next chapter soon promise hihi)...

since it is revealed that a large part of the hate train against you is paid for by people who want you out of power, kenji as much as possible wants to avoid being seen as more than friends with you atm bc he's worried it will derail your career

The Phantom Rider, Sonic's "hero" status, and Sonic's love for his friends: a poorly put-together analysis

so, ive seen a non-zero amount of people say that Sonic taking on the alter ego of the Phantom Rider is out of character for him, and my knee-jerk reaction was to disagree (though, im biased, because i adore the Phantom Rider). but then i thought about the why of it all -- why does it not feel out of character for Sonic to disguise himself to cause chaos?

part 1: Sonic will break the rules

well, first of all, Sonic doesnt really care too much about being a hero. he helps people because he wants to, not because its expected of him. weve all seen those satbk cutscenes reposted to hell and back, so let me be the millionth to do so

when Merlina tells Sonic that, upon taking Caliburn, he would become the villain in everyones eyes, he shrugs it off. and even later, when Gawain tries to talk him down from battling Merlina, Sonic dismisses the idea that hes doing this out of some kind of chivalry or duty, that he fights because he wants to.

there are many other instances of Sonic not really caring about rules or social conventions, and gladly breaking them if it means he can save people (dude literally runs from cops in sa2), but its never directly stated as explicitly as it is in satbk.

so, Sonic doesnt care about being a hero, and doesnt care about being a villain in other peoples eyes if he knows hes doing whats right. youd think with this facet of his character, him actively disguising himself as the Phantom Rider would be antithetical to this point, right? if he doesnt care about being seen as a villain, then he shouldnt have to mask his identity. its a fair conclusion to come to, but it also ignores what i think is one of Sonic's core personality traits;

part 2: Sonic loves his friends a lot

its strange to me that not a lot of people bring this up, because he does! from "and Amy... take care of yourself," to "I'll have you smiling by the end of this," Sonic just genuinely loves his friends to death, and doesnt want to sabotage them.

if he runs out there to cause chaos during the clean sweepstakes, completely unmasked? everyone who knows a single thing about Sonic will start to assume bad things about the Restoration. just because Sonic has good intentions doesnt mean hes above the rules, and acting like he is can put people he cares about (namely Jewel and the Diamond Cutters) at the mercy of public opinion.

he cant act like hes above the rules, especially when hes directly associated with the Restoration (even if hes not a part of it) during the clean sweepstakes.

and understandably so! we see how everyone reacts to seeing Sonic as the Phantom Rider, especially Tangle -- its a tough pill to swallow, especially without all the context involved. to an outsider, it looks like Sonic is just trying to sabotage the clean sweepstakes because hes being a sore loser (or, really, any other number of malicious reasons)

but, really, i think that the point im trying to make is summed up best by Amy and Sally (even though its in Archie)

thats just not how they do things. they dont want to cause necessary chaos or danger just for the hell of it, and they certainly dont want to associate the Restoration with that sorta thing -- people look to the Restoration for hope, and while Sonic is associated with it during the clean sweepstakes, his hands are a bit tied. itd be a total dick move for him to basically throw his friends (and especially Jewel) under the bus like that, and he knows it.

Sonic may not care about his reputation in other peoples eyes, but he cares greatly about how his actions affect his friends.

part 3: the conclusion

its easy to assume that, based on how lax Sonic is with rules and social conventions, him disguising himself just to cause a distraction for Amy and Tails to get attention off of them would be out of character. but, based on the circumstances, i think that it makes enough sense given the context for him to take the route that he does.

the intimacy of waking up in the morning 🥹 it's a daily occurrence that aaron makes fun of you for hogging the blanket while the two of you are making the bed - it's always bunched up on your side. or every so often, you manage to take possession of aaron's pillow in the middle of the night. so when the two of you wake up, he's always so confused on how you managed to do that ??? like how do you possibly steal the pillow from underneath his head while sleeping 😭 and as the two of you are brushing your teeth, you both discuss your plans for the day <333 you have an appointment to go to, aaron has to attend a meeting that he's absolutely dreading, jack has a doctor's appointment, etc.. and if anyone else was listening, they wouldn't be able to comprehend any of it - the two of you are basically incoherent due to mouths filled with toothpaste/talking while brushing teeth, but since it's habit, and because both of you know each other like the back of your hand, you can understand each other perfectly 😭 AND whoever get's ready first gets to wake up jack, so the two of you are racing each other to do so hehe <3333 just 😭 you finishing first, then booking it out of your bedroom with aaron is trying to stop you by grabbing your waist from behind, both giggling like absolute idiots down the hall to jack's room 🥰 (i now have the desperate need to turn this into a whole fic omg omg)

aaron is a sucker for physical touch i'll say it forever 😭 he loves having a hand on you at all times - lingering touches, hand on your back as he passes, hand on your thigh during meals or in the car, or simply your hand in his. and he always finds a way to touch you, no matter where the two of you are <333 never needs a reason to kiss you, he'll plant one of you out of nowhere. hehe and every time he does any of that, you turn into a blushing mess, so that's only another reason for him to do so 🥹 and likewise, he loves showering/taking baths with you. just being close in all ways, shapes and forms >>>> and since work can call him away at any time :( he'll take advantage of all the time he gets with you, and throughout cases, he's looking forward to coming home to you and being attached to your hip once again <3

omg he's so mindful of your preferences it's insane. he picks up on things you don't even mention. the laundry example 😭 not only does he know your preferred way of folding, he knows exactly how you like it to be put away - what goes in what drawers, what gets put into drawers versus the closet, he even knows how you organize your shoes. when you opened a drawer after he put away laundry, very soon after you first moved in, you were absolutely astounded at what you found - socks tucked together next to your underwear, sleep shirts folded on the right side. specifically the right. and UGH your heart just about burst out of your chest because he just silently noticed that's how you like it, and so he'll make an effort - that's how it'll be <333

as for flowers 🤭😭 the two bouquets 😭 hehe your coworkers are always gushing how you have the most perfect man whenever there's fresh flowers on your desk, and how jealous they are their partners never think to do the same 😭 and sometimes those new flowers just randomly appear on your desk AHHH you immediately whip out your phone to text aaron - "flowers again?🥺" because no matter how many times you receive them, they'll always surprise you. and like the drunk in love idiot aaron is he always replies with something cheesy 🙄🥰 like 'anything for my flower. so glad you love them' 😭😭😭

@three-dee-ess i figure im a lil late to the party but it'd be worng to not contribute my humble pile

From left to right top to bottom:

The blue 3DS XL belonged to my older brother, who let me use it to play my copy of Pokémon Y until our parents eventually bought me my own 2DS, the one all the way to the far right with its circle pad lovingly rubbed off XD. The XL 3DS for a few years was unplayable since my big brother had dropped it off of a desk while it was plugged in, damaging the charge port until i eventually found a place that could fix it, a place id eventually end up working at myself XD.

The orange new 2ds right below it was also my big brother's, this the replacement he'd bought and used after his first 3ds had its charge port damaged. From a few years stuffed in and out of tight pants pockers, the shell of the console became bent, and it had difficulty reading games until i ended up fixing the issue myself a few months after he decided to part with it.

The Special edition Pikachu 3DS was a Mercari find years ago when i was at my first job making bookoo money with no bills to pay, and decided 200 was a great price for Pikachu and him cheeks. Love this system, even though if you put it in sleep mode and carry it around for more than a few hours, it has an error and makes you turn off the system, so not a Walking-around-as-a-tourist 3DS unfortunately, but other than that and a minor chip in the shell, works perfect!

The blue base model is actually a modded japanese base model with a capture card installed! Ive yet to have time to properly use it in any kind of streaming capacity, but it's still with the box and has everything from the modder! I paid a pretty penny for it a few years back, but im not sure it would pull the same value today. Who knows!

The orange and white new 2ds with the target exclusive pikachu hard shell was a christmas gift from back in highschool. I spent many an off hour in my debate class's script room hunting shinys and playing pokemon Amie in my copy of Alpha sapphire for hours on end. Great times! It's lovingly adorned with stickers, and remains my most decorated 3ds.

And lastly, but certainly not least, my new 3ds with a healthy collection of kisekai plates. This was actually a 20th Anniversary pokemon red and blue edition that had its original box, inserts AND plates included with it! Paid about the same for the 3ds with the capture card, but this one had absolutely increased in price since my purchasing. The other plates id come across separately, all during my time with my first job. Generally i prefer having the 151 pokemon colored spites plates that are on it now, or the Blue Gingam Check plates, and i even purchased the matching theme for the system before the E-shop closed, so they match! This system is my current "main one" and has every pokemon virtual console software downloaded onto it pre eshop closure, and i just recently finally modded it for pretendo and Netpass, both of which work wonderfully!

Im really hoping pretendo can get the Pokémon chat Player Search System up and running eventually for Pokémon X, Y, omega ruby and alpha sapphire, since a bulk of my time with the 3ds was spent battling and wonder trading to my heart's content. I can only hope.

Currently im playing a lot of Tomodachii life, a game i picked up from my job last christmas as a gift to myself, and fantasy life! Both heavy hitters I'd recommend to anyone with a 3DS! But yea, buy a 3ds for a reasonable price, and mod that sucker! Use Net pass and play all the games you want! All emulation is ethical ethical emulation.

could you say what happens in the time machine? i really want to watch it but im flat broke rn.

also only just saw this sorry! this is gonna be a summary of the entire show, so if you don't want spoilers then don't keep reading.

so basically it's about three people who are trying to put on a new groundbreaking version of the time machine. one of these people is dave wells, the great great grandson of h.g wells. his production of the show is not just supposed to be a straight production, but also provide evidence that h.g wells actually did figure out how to time travel. he and his two coworkers, amy and michael, create a piece that is a mismatch of scenes from the novel, evidence of h.g wells's time travelling experiences, lessons on how time travel works, and recreations of how they created the show itself (and also cher songs). at the end of act 1, dave realises that their prop time machine, which was actually h.g wells's lecturing chair, actually IS the time machine, as he tries to use it for the scene where the time traveler goes into the future, but keeps accidentally travelling back to the beginning of the scene. after repeating the scene many times, with amy and michael unaware of the time travelling happening and dave trying to figure out what's going on with the chair, michael accidentally gets stabbed with the knife they believed to be a prop, but he had forgotten to switch out. as michael dies, dave has the idea to go back in time and fix it so that he never does.

in act 2, amy and michael are doing the beginning of act 1 again, seemingly unaware of the fact that the audience have already seen this. dave appears and interrupts, not in costume, and the audience finds out that he's been time traveling for a while now, constantly repeating the play in an effort to save michael to the point where he knows exactly what amy and michael will say. he explains to amy and michael no matter what he does, michael always dies, even if not in the exact same way, because the laws of time mean that you cannot go back in time to save or destroy a persons existence. amy, in an effort to prove him wrong, sarcastically goes to try out the machine, and time travels and sees all of the possibilities of michael's death. amy comes up with the idea to contact the future, as they will have the technology to better understand the space-time continuum and may have a way to save michael. they get an audience member to write a letter to their university to put in a time capsule, with the phone number of a different audience member's phone (which they keep on stage), so that the scientists from the future can use their fancy technology to call them during the show. to pass the time while they wait for the phone call from the future, they do a variety of activities, including but not limited to michael going on a date with an audience member, quickly running some scenes from the time machine, and an 'importance of being earnest' hip hip dance mashup. with two minutes remaining until michael's death and the phone still not having rung, michael gets angry with his situation and destroys the time machine to save the rest of humanity, but this means that dave and amy will be unable to go back in time and try and save him again, meaning this will be the last time they ever see him. as the seconds count down, they brace themselves, but as the time passes and michael doesn't die, they finally receive the phone call. the scientist explains that destroying the time machine bought them a few minutes, and after some confusion over an instruction, they manage to save michael from being crushed by the falling set. the end!

it's a very fun show in my opinion, it's not an overly high quality piece of theatre or anything, but if you're willing to embrace the silliness, i highly recommend it! you can buy or rent it from the original theatre website (or if you dm me i do have the recordings of it). hope that made at least a smidgen of sense, it's a hard show to summarise ahaha.

Like Ronnie was on the super friends tv show so he was probably at least moderately popular and his series was able to go to 100. now no firestorm characters appear. unless they were completely changed for a cw tv show...

read kessel's hawk and dove and Armageddon 2001 ruined everything because they wanted a "shocking twist" instead of keeping with the story

I think pre-day of vengeance blue devil is more interesting and leads to a wider variety of stories (though I haven't yet read 100% magic blue devil yet)

and Amethyst was probably the weirdest one for me, because unlike other stuff where it's after a while of underuse or no use, I disliked the changes to the lore immediately Post-crisis. It wasn't even the crisis's fault that time! and I don't think anyone is going to bring back that version of Amy. I feel like the amethyst stuff was also because they didn't know how to write a magical girl but ... yeah

and legion of superheroes. I don't think I really need to elaborate on them ... i should really continue my read through- but my brother recommended me a lot of 80's DC and I haven't really got around to his recommendations yet. I'll probably get to it when I start reading 90s comics since I also decided to read all of the Vigilantes - which unfortunately means reading one of the worst characters in comics - but hey at least that has 2 vigilantes? eh hopefully the comic is at least entertaining

anyways the worst character supporting cast thing is wonder woman - it's been done repeatedly since the silver age writer erased his supporting cast (like og wonder girl). like Etta and Steve are the only characters you're sure are going to stick around (during Post-crisis you didn't get Steve). also Etta should say "Woo-oo" and beat up supervillains more

tbf firestorm WAS in a couple episodes of justice league action! hes what got me to read firestorm comics (id def have to do some rereading before i can have a convo about anything firestorm tho, that was like. SO long ago).

im super biased ofc bc the legion is one of those teams that ive read nearly every appearance of but i feel like. aside from bendis' run. theres a lot of love put into the team, even in more modern appearances (once again NOT counting bendis' run i swear that man has never touched a losh comic in his life). its a bit sad that theyve fallen on the wayside these days but i think people just find the massive size of the team and disconnect from the rest of dc to be too overwhelming to start on. i love a huge ensemble team tho. it almost makes me understand x-men fans

and wonder woman...... yeah i honestly. cant think of many characters that i associate with her outside those two and the other wonderfam. its annoying that shes treated like her character is on equal footing as superman and batman, but shes never been given NEARLY the same level of attention

oh where to BEGIN amy rose my beloved she's sonic first friend and he is hers! she's mega strong due to what may or may not be a natural excess of chaos energy that makes her the closest natural being to shadow to exist, she's 12 (according to sega that is. i mess around w the ages a lil bit so shes usually closer to 14 in my stuff but), she has a giant hammer, she loves fighting, she's in love with love, she has tarot cards, she grew up alone, she has a temper

literally what can't i say about amy? she's aromantic and Wants to be in love w sonic bc thats what she thinks she shld do but it never feels right and she can't tell the difference between loving him as her first friend and loving him like a partner and she's absolutely Terrified that she's broken somehow. so she tries to convince herself she's in love with him bc thats how this works right? they'll get married one day and have hoglets and she can’t word why the idea freaks her out so much

those bracelets she wears are inhibitor rings actually she told me herself! she doesn't actually know what they Do she got them as a child after her first meeting with sonic

before she got the rings she was a mess she couldn't control her strength and she broke everything she touched. no one in her village spoke to her and they were all terrified of her the only friend she had was her deck of tarot cards she found in the trash. then she became pen pals with sonic and they met and she was ecstatic but when she came back from that adventure the exposure to the chaos emeralds and just that Much chaos energy sorta kickstarted her powers further

so when she went back to her village to gather her things before adventuring her strength was far more than she could handle. one of the adults told her she was sick and she believed them. he gave her two bracelets and told her to always keep them on. that it would keep the evil at bay. and she believed him.

amy doesnt even know she has inhibitor rings she thinks its some sort of magic cure for her curse. it isnt until she meets shadow that she sees.. something in him. looking at shadow is like looking into a foggy mirror to her. she can see Something familiar but can't put her finger on it. and then one day during some random battle one of her bracelets breaks and just that one breaking is enough to overwhelm her with power she hasnt felt since she was a kid. she's absolutely terrified, but when she looks up from her hands to her friends expecting to see horror and disgust, she locks eyes with shadow. he looks at her not in fear or disgust but in awe and recognition. he runs over to her, taking one of his rings off. she yells at him to be careful but he doesnt listen to her. he puts it around her wrist and sure it's a little different than her own. it's more elegant and too artificial to feel right, but it works. as soon as the ring clicks in place around her wrist she feels more in control. the terrifying spiral of power dims to what she's used to.

amy looks up at shadow and the fog on the glass is wiped away. she's like him. she's not cursed she just has a high amount of chaos energy. they all go back to tails's workshop where the fox is immediately working on making even more inhibitor rings and asking amy if he can do some tests on her chaos energy and shadow is at her side the whole time. amy rose is no longer alone

started ranting about doctor who to my gf and realized i actually have a lot of opinions (which start off summarizing hbomberguy's takes from the sherlock video but it was kind of a revelation for me) so if u want to hear them ive copypasted and edited them a bit for u guys under the cut <3

so like to set up how bad steven moffat is he explains why doctor who was so bad when moffat was the showrunner in a way ive been trying to articulate for years

basically he's a decent writer who was good at individual episodes that make reference to the doctors history but when it came to actually writing that history and the big events that would become the doctor's history he sucks so so so badly

like in the empty child he was amazing, he prioritized the story of the episode while giving the doctor an air of mystery and references a long and complicated backstory without compromising any charm or humor

but in the very first episode where he had reins on the entire show and its storylines he resorted to just a monologue from the doctor about how cool and special he is and that trend continued the whole time he was in charge. the entire universe suddenly revolved around the doctor

like. chibnall was clearly trying to subvert that by only using brand new aliens during his first season and having extra companions (three of them jesus christ) but he didn't address the heart of the problem and somehow made it even worse. the charm of the doctor was always that they were just a traveler bouncing around the universe and helping people or having fun or whatever

and of course there was always the tragic backstory and the genocide and being the last of his kind and all that but that always came second to the humans he loved!! the first time the master came back in tennant's run it was martha and her family and jack that saved him!! and chibnall tried to do that with yaz but it just didnt feel as impactful bc of how overpowering the master & timeless child plots were (dont even get me started on the timeless child shit retconning the entire history of the show to make the doctor quite literally the most important being in the universe)

moffat on the other hand went all over the place with it and wrote in intergalactic cults deadset on killing the doctor and when he did try to make companions special and important he completely took away their agency in the process

to me clara was a decent companion and had some great moments for me until she turned out to be not real or a metaphor or forgotten or dead or somehow retconned into existing since the show started in 1963 it was all so WEIRD and misses the point of making a companion important. it made her so important she lost her humanity imo

and then there was bill who also died and was mutilated beyond recognition and it just makes me think about how rtd never did that to companions. they were special not because of time magic or destiny or fucked up deaths but because they were just humans. with families. martha got to go back to her family. donna had to forget but she was happy in the end. rose was supposed to live out her life in the parallel universe with her own mortal doctor, and she did, but moffat STILL found a way to bring her back as a metaphor because his desire to deconstruct female companions into concepts and tragedies was just too strong

that's not even getting into what he did to river. or amy...

none of this is to say rtd is perfect of course, i'm really nervous to see how he deals with everything that's been thrown at the show in the past couple decades but considering he plans on staying for a while i really hope he manages to put a better twist on all of it. honestly the thing im most curious about is the special effects.. the show has been leaving very heavily on cg lately but chibnall did introduce a few decent practical effects and puppets so i hope rtd pushes for more of that. im getting off topic tho

thoughts on doctor who . favorite episode or monster or character or w/e 🎤

OH MANNN i watched all of the ninth tenth and eleventh doctor series+twelfth up until the episode where clara takes his keys or something? on public TV here!! they showed them just a bit after the kids programming and i was HOOKED despite catching episodes when younger giving me literally three different psychotic episodes that i was in and out of for atleast a month each (it also gave me two more when i was older LOL).anyways omg omg i ADORED the eleventh doctor matt smith is one of the only live action characters i learnt the actors name of.i also looooved missy even if her arc went a bit over my head bc i was falling out during twelfths run (I STILL LISTEN TO THE MISSY YOURE SO FINE PARODY ON YOUTUBE) anyways goddd i loved so many of the episodes??? its so hard to pick a favorite i just genuinely loved nearly all of them (also i keep having to go back to readjust the amount of episodes it gave me because i keep remembering more LMAO awesome show scares my existential crises too much though) god a favoriteee hhhh the van gogh one definitely the weeping angel ones OH definitely the ones w the skin lady who took roses body once cant forget those.god im sorry every episode i remember has me going FUCK YEAH I LOVE THAT ONE im SORRY for liking one of superwholock shows this genuinely doctor who was just a major highlight of my miserable middle school days.and id be lying if i said i dont wanna rewatch it and all the series i havent yet

(also nobody get concerned abt the amount of episodes it gave me i have paranoid pd which presents a higher frequency of psychotic episodes for the exchange they last way less.uh.usually.also i genuinely like creepy shit i willingly put myself through stuff thatll give me paranoia as long as it's not a major trigger.i am literally completely fine this way of living does not harm me long term i laugh about it when its over.the episodes that gave me my own episodes are literally my top favorites nowadays)

also "together forever or not at all" from when amy and rory jump off that building is one of the osts ever and i fucking adore that name

characters included will be sonic, tails, knuckles, amy, team dark, chaotix, mighty+ray, surge+kit, tangle+whisper, hooligans, silver+blaze, and metal sonic/eggman. decided to keep it idw/gameverse (no archie sonic today folks pack it UP)im jumping off of the synopsis of that idw 900th adventure comic or whatever it was called, so the warp topaz is jettisoned into spiderland.

the area is closed off bc they think it might be a meteor, photojournalist peter parker is sent to report on it. fun

he has reason to suspect (idk why but he does) that the meteor came from klyntar (planet of the symbiotes) so he puts on his spiderman duds to check it out.

cue sneaking through security and touching the warp topaz (looks similar to the capsule venom was in during secret war) and boom hes isekaid into sonic world.

this is during the frantic chase for the warp topaz so the sonic crew is already kinda in gear and ready. ofc sonic and company (blaze and silver already in tow) are here to make sure it gets destroyed/disposed properly, team dark is here to do the same but are not allied directly with sonic and friends (which includes mighty+ray the chaotix tangle+whisper and all the usuals)

surge and kit are here bc obviously the topaz is a connection to starline (could help with those goofy little visions) and could possibly also make them stronger

the hooligans are here bc eggman hired them, along with sending out metal sonic to retrieve it. wants to study its properties

as soon as spiderman gets there, hes understandably disoriented and surprised. sonic spots him first and mistakes him as a robot eggman built (being human is throwing him off) and goes to attack him.

sonic and co are split up into team sonic+amy, silver+blaze combined with tangle+whisper, and extended chaotix.

spiderman senses sonic barreling into him (lucky for his ass theyre in a urban setting) and dodges, jumping onto a rooftop and webbing the topaz to his back so he doesnt lose it. to get the topaz now you have to beat spiderman

tails tracks down the topaz and flies up to spiderman, who is again taken aback by the whole talking animals thing so he swings off without saying anything. he takes some time to rest and come to terms with everything, realizing that this is an alternate reality and he cannot lose the topaz at any cost.

at this moment knuckles has managed to climb up after him, catching him off guard and knocking him off the building

spider falls off and manages to break his fall with a web net, but this leaves him open to amy hitting him with sonic. sonic realizes that this is an opportunity to disarm him fast and runs around spiderman really quickly making an airless vortex

spiderman starts to lose consciousness and cant jump over bc tails and knuckles are flying and hanging off a wall so he sticks his arm out to stop sonic from running. it works but also hurts like hell

amy goes to hit him with her hammer, which he catches but struggles to hold before slipping to the side as sonic ran to him to hit him with the hammer

tails flies down to punch him but spiderman realizes that its kinda fucked up to hit a kid (teenagers are fine) so he dodges and webs up his tails, taking him out for the time being

knuckles and amy both rush him, and spiderman is initially losing bc of having to pull his punches a bit, but he steals knuckles gloves which allow him to hit harder without hurting anyone beyond blunt force. after a short fistfight spiderman knocks out knuckles + discards the gloves

he manages to block amys hammer blows with his arms but it does kinda hurt, he grabs her hammer with his webs while staying out of range and webs it to a wall. firing a web he kicks sonic mid-swing. they engage in a short battle with sonic running around and taunting spiderman a lot so he cant get a hit in, but spiderman is able to focus on his spider sense and anticipate sonics move and punch him hard

he then meets up with extended chaotix. he webs up charmy and ray p fast same way he did tails (not my fault sonic series has 3 little boys that can fly)

he sticks to a wall above vector and mighty but espio kinda jumpscares him bc of the whole being invisible and also being able to climb walls thing. gets hit with a kunai before webbing up espio

after a bit of a skirmish he manages to hang up vector by his tail so he cant break out of the webs. tries webbing up mighty but fails miserably

he tries a sneak attack from the back and fails miserably again (shell) and stands around a little going owww owie my hand. mighty punches him really hard into a wall

spiderman tries to attack from multiple angles but fails multiple times. eventually he just goes for a normal punch in the face before jumping back and using his sticky hands to flip mighty off his shell and facefirst into the floor

he meets up with silver next, who immediately grabs him in pk. spiderman struggles hard against it and seems to be making some leeway but cant fully break free. silver is too focused. the solution then becomes to distract him with stupid jokes long enough for the grip to weaken for him to shoot a web at silvers eyes, and using the opportunity to start bounding around like a lunatic so silver cant grab him again after he gets the webbing off. a swift one two puts silver out of it.

hes then grabbed by tangles tail, and tries to break out but then stops when he realizes he could break the tail on accident. hes then threatened by being shot in the fucking head by both whisper and blaze's fire

they dont want him dead but he mouths off enough so that whisper pulls the trigger, which is enough for the grip on him to loosen and for him to just barely dodge the shot

blaze fires at him but to no avail, he doesnt seem to be harmed by the fire much even when it does hit. he snatches the wispon to block a shot of fire, which destroys it, (he kinda freaks when he realizes that he could have killed a wisp but its fine) and then uses tangle's tail to web the three up together (blaze is slowly burning out of it but it wont be in time)

he runs into team dark next, where hes hit by a triple whammy of a smoke bomb from rouge and a chaos spear from shadow, and then hes pelted with machine gun fire from omega that causes him to have to start artfully dodging

he starts webbing up omegas guns one by one, but this leaves him vulnerable to some cheap shots by rouge and shadow. he eventually gives up and uses them as meat shields (kinda) to stop omega from firing. and it works

spiderman then finishes webbing up the guns fully before just trying to outlast shadow so he gets weak enough to beat, all while avoiding rouge's areal attacks while being annoying as possible

this works and shadow is eventually taken down, and rouge makes the descision to retreat and recoup with sonic and co

surge and kit are next, whom start by ensnaring spiderman with a tentacle made of water and electrocuting him. luckily he was not grounded but he was fine. mostly

he dodges lightning tendrils from surge trying to get to kit, where he then smashes open the water pack and renders it nonfunctional.

he gets shocked a few more times before webbing up his fists to use as gloves to punch surge without being electrocuted himself. alternatively he does something clever with electricity wires to temporarily short circuit her and land the finishing blow i havent yet decided

at this point he is just running on adrenaline and is a bit more sloppy with his movements. this is when the hooligans attack

bark is no match for spidermans strength but still takes up most of his attention, which then leads spiderman to get hit by some pretty nasty shots from fangs gun and a few bombs from bean (since theyre cartoon bombs they dont hurt him as much as an actual explosion)

he manages to dodge a few, which hit bark and knock him out. he then does the usual strategy of webbing up fangs gun and tying him up with bean, whom he knocks out with a cartoonishly long windup punch

at this point eggman gets fed up and sends metal sonic, and tells spiderman thanks for "saving him the trouble" of getting the gem himself. its at this point spiderman realizes he kinda fucked up by beating up everyone.

its okay though since metal sonic is kind of just threatening to slice his throat with the claws, but spiderman broke off his hands and then jams them into the thruster, and opens up the control panel and fucks up some wires to put metal sonic out of commission

at this point the rest of the heroes reconvened and catch up to him, but even spiderman with writer issued plot armor cant win against a cast that big, so he asks them really niceys to stop and explains his situation. they explain that eggman had made fake replicas of the topaz only he knew the difference between

so spiderman and sonic (just him) do a short little romp into eggmans base and destroy them all. spiderman is allowed to use the topaz to get back home as long as he promises to dispose of it. which he DOES but he just kinda throws it into the hudson river and calls it a day

does anyone want to hear the outline i have right now. yeah for the spiderman sonic crossover where he just beats them up. yeah

⌗ you and sonic were heading towards barricade town, sonic was originally gonna go alone, but after a lot of convincing he had let you come with him. he was so afraid of losing you too, he couldn’t risk it. but he did…

⌗ once y’all finally got there, the two of you stood on top the high walls of the village. sonic and eggman began their usual banter, and you were watching just in case something went down.

⌗ “you cant run forever, rodent! you’ll tire eventually, and then my virus will take hold!” — “if you’re so proud of it, why don’t you try it!” — “gakk! don’t touch me!” that’s when eggman and your s/o fall off the floating ride and onto the ground. you foolishly try to save sonic, but end up falling onto the ground as well.

⌗ after sonic sees you’ve fallen he rushes to your side, he grabs you and holds you close to his chest. “(Y/N).. this is why i didn’t want you to come, please be okay..” he looks down at you, and realizes.. he’s holding you.

⌗ “s-sonic.. what’s happening to me?” large spots of silver spread quickly all over the young (A/T)s body. your eyes widen once you’ve realized what’s happened, you grab sonics arm and begin to tear up. “no no no- (Y/N)- p-please, im sorry!” his desperate cries meant rang throughout the village.

⌗ sonic knew there was nothing he could do, he can’t just take you back to safety, then he’ll put everybody else at risk.

⌗ so.. he leaves you there, “don’t worry (Y/N).. i’ll.. i’ll save you.”

⌗ sonic gently puts you down on the ground before running out of the village, once he far enough he slowly stops running.. sonic drops to his knees and he covers his mouth, he lost.

⌗ he lost you, his friends, his home, what’s the point in fighting anymore?! and it’s all his fault! if only he had given eggman to shadow from the very beginning, none of this wouldn’t have happened. you wouldn’t have caught the virus!

⌗ the guilt had consumed him quicker than the virus itself. he can’t handle this.. it’s too much for one small hedgehog.

⌗ when sonic got back to rest of his friends, they were all confused. “w-where’s (Y/N)?” amy asks, sonic kept his eyes on the ground, the empty look in sonics eyes told amy everything she needed to know. she began crying, and so did a few others

hi. on your post where you may or may not have ended on 'moffat is either your angel or your devil' did you have maybe an elaboration on that somewhere that i could possibly hear about. i'm very much a capaldi era stan and i've never tried to defend the matt smith era even though it had delightful moments sometimes so i wonder where that puts me. i'd love to hear your perspective on moffat as a person with your political perspective. -nicole

hi ok sorry i took so long to respond to this but i dont think you know how LOADED this question is for me but i am so happy to elaborate on that for you. first a few grains of salt to flavor your understanding of the whole situation: a. im unfairly biased against moffat bc im a davies stan and a tennant stan; b. i still very much enjoy and appreciate moffat era who for many reasons; and c. i hate moffat on a personal level far more than i could ever hate his work.

the thing is that its all always gonna be a bit mixed up bc i have to say a bunch of seemingly contradictory things in a row. for instance, a few moffat episodes are some of my absolute favorites of the rtd era, AND the show went way downhill when moffat took over, AND the really good episodes he wrote during the rtd era contained the seeds of his destruction.

like i made that post about the empty child/the doctor dances and it holds true for blink and thats about it bc the girl in the fireplace and silence in the library/forest of the dead are good but not nearly on the same level, and despite the fact that i like them at least nominally, they are also great examples of everything i hate about moffat and how he approached dw as a whole.

basically. doctor who is about people. there are many things about moffats tenure as showrunner that i think are a step up from rtd era who! actual gay people, for one! but i think that can likely be attributed mostly to an evolving Society as opposed to something inherent to him and his work, seeing as rtd is literally gay, and the existence of queer characters in moffats work doesnt mean the existence of good queer characters (ill give him bill but thats it!)

i have a few Primary Grievances with moffat and how he ran dw. all of them are things that got better with capaldi, but didnt go away. they are as follows:

moffat projects his own god complex onto the doctor

rtd era who had a doctor with a god complex. you cant ever be the doctor and not have a god complex. the problem with moffats era specifically is that the god complex was constant and unrepentant and was seen as a fundamental personality trait of the doctor rather than a demon he has to fight. he has the Momence where you feel bad for him, the Momence where he shows his humility or whatever and youre reminded that he doesnt want to be the lonely god, but those are just. moments. in a story where the doctor thinks hes the main character. rtd era doctor was aware that he wasnt the main character. he had to be an authority sometimes and he had to be the loner and he had to be sad about it, but he ultimately understood that he was expendable in a narrative sense.

this is how you get lines like “were the thin fat gay married anglican marines, why would we need names as well?” from the same show that gave you the gut punch moment at the end of midnight when they realize that nobody asked the hostess for her name. and on the one hand, thats a small sticking point, but on the other hand, its just one small example of the simple disregard that moffat has for humanity.

incidentally, this is a huge part of why sherlock sucked so bad: moffats main characters are special bc theyre so much bigger and better than all the normal people, and thats his downfall as a showrunner. he thinks that his audience wants fucking sheldon cooper when what they want is people.

like, ok. think of how many fantastic rtd era eps are based in the scenario “what if the doctor wasnt there? what if he was just out of commission for a bit?” and how those eps are the heart of the show!! bc theyre about people being people!! the thing is that all of the rtd era companions would have died for the doctor but he understood and the story understood that it wasnt about him.

this is like. nine sending rose home to save her life and sacrifice his own vs clara literally metaphysically entwining her existence w the doctor. ten also sending rose with her family to save her life vs river being raised from infancy to be obsessed w the doctor and then falling in love w him. martha leaving bc she values herself enough to make that decision vs amy being treated like a piece of meat.

and this is simultaneously a great callback to when i said that moffats episodes during the rtd era sometimes had the same problems as his show running (bc girl in the fireplace reeks of this), and a great segue into the next grievance.

moffat hates women

he hates women so fucking much. g-d, does steven moffat ever hate women. holy shit, he hates women. especially normal human women who prioritize their normal human lives on an equal or higher level than the doctor. moffat hated rose bc she wasnt special by his standards. the empty child/the doctor dances is the nicest he ever treated her, and she really didnt do much in those eps beyond a fuck ton of flirting.

girl in the fireplace is another shining example of this. youve got rose (who once again has another man to keep her busy, bc moffat doesnt think shes good enough for the doctor) sidelined for no reason only to be saved by the doctor at the last second or whatever. and then youve got reinette, who is pretty and powerful and special!

its just. moffat thinks that the doctor is as shallow and selfish as he is. thats why he thinks the doctor would stay in one place with reinette and not with rose. bc moffat is shallow and sees himself in the doctor and doesnt think he should have to settle for someone boring and normal.

not to mention rose met the doctor as an adult and chose to stay with him whereas reinette is. hm. introduced to the doctor as a child and grows up obsessed with him.

does that sound familiar? it should! bc it is also true of amy and river. and all of them are treated as viable romantic pairings. bc the only women who deserve the doctor are the ones whose entire existence revolves around him. which includes clara as well.

genuinely i think that at least on some level, not even necessarily consciously, that bill was a lesbian in part bc capaldi was too old to appeal to mainstream shippers. like twelve/clara is still a thing but not as universally appealing as eleven/clara but i am just spitballing. but i think they weighed the pros and cons of appealing to the woke crowd over the het shippers and found that gay companion was more profitable. anyway the point is to segue into the next point, which is that moffat hates permanent consequences.

steven moffat does not know how to kill a character. honestly it feels like hes doing it on purpose after a certain point, like he knows he has this habit and hes trying to riff on it to meme his own shit, but it doesnt work. it isnt funny and it isnt harmless, its bad writing.

the end of the doctor dances is so poignant and so meaningful and so fucking good bc its just this once! everybody lives, just this once! and then he does p much the same thing in forest of the dead - this one i could forgive, bc i do think that preserving those peoples consciousnesses did something for the doctor as a character, it wasnt completely meaningless. but everything after that kinda was.

rory died so many times its like. get a hobby lol. amy died at least once iirc but it was all a dream or something. clara died and was erased from the doctors memory. river was in prison and also died. bill? died. all of them sugarcoated or undone or ignored by the narrative to the point of having effectively no impact on the story. the point of a major character death is that its supposed to have a point. and you could argue that a piece of art could be making a point with a pointless death, ie. to put perspective on it and remind you that bad shit just happens, but with moffat the underlying message is always “i can do whatever i want, nothing is permanent or has lasting impact ever.”

basically, with moffat, tragedy exists to be undone. and this was a really brilliant, really wonderful thing in the doctor dances specifically bc it was the doctor clearly having seen his fair share of tragedy that couldnt be helped, now looking on his One Win with pride and delight bc he doesnt get wins like this! and then moffat proceeded to give him the same win over and over and over and over. nobody is ever dead. nobody is ever unable to be saved. and if they are, really truly dead and/or gone, then thats okay bc moffat has decided that [insert mitigating factor here]*

*the mitigating factor is usually some sort of computerized database of souls.

i can hear the moffat stans falling over themselves to remind me that amy and rory definitely died, and they did - after a long and happy life together, they died of old age. i dont consider that a character death any more than any other character choosing to permanently leave the tardis.

and its not just character deaths either, its like, everything. the destruction of gallifrey? never mind lol! character development? scrapped! the same episode four times? lets give it a fifth try and hope nobody notices. bc he doesnt know how to not make the doctor either an omnipotent savior or a self-pitying failure.

it is in nature of doctor who, i believe, for the doctor to win most of the time. like, it wouldnt be a very good show if he didnt win most of the time. but it also wouldnt be a very good show if he won all of the time. my point is that moffats doctor wins too often, and when he doesnt win, it feels empty and hollow rather than genuinely humbling, and you know hes not gonna grow from it pretty much at all.

so like. again, i like all of doctor who i enjoy all of it very much. i just think that steven moffat is a bad show runner and a decent writer at times. and it is frustrating. and im not here to convince or convert anyone im just living my truth. thank you for listening.
