Dragon Ball AF Lore

Last night I reblogged a thing about Xicor, the imaginary villain of Dragon Ball AF, the imaginary sequel to Dragon Ball GT. There were some cool responses to this, but I didn't want to reblog the entire post all over again, so I thought I'd carry the discussion over here.

My understanding was that the West Supreme Kai faked her death and then came back as a bad guy. She somehow obtained a DNA sample from Goku and used it to impregnate herself? The end result being that Xicor is the biological son of Goku and the West Supreme Kai, even though Goku himself had no idea of any of this.

Of course, it's impossible to cite sources on any of this, since I'm talking about made-up details from a made-up show. It's entirely possible that there are other versions of the AF legend where Goku cheated on his wife like a jerk.

What I always wanted to know was how the West Supreme Kai survived the fight with Kid Buu five million years ago, and why she laid low for so long.

But now that you've brought up Superman IV, I can't stop thinking about the raw chicken thigh Lex stuffed in that little lockbox. This is my new DBAF personal canon.

It really is bizarre how long the AF mythos has persisted. I think Dragon Ball Super was the final nail in the coffin for any true believers that were still left, but by the time DBS came out AF had already established itself as this weird little thing in its own right. It's like Bigfoot. I think everyone knows it's not real and doesn't make a lot of sense, but the idea is too much fun to discard completely.

@mozillavulpix: definitely think there's a lot of information here that's wrong, but I wasn't in the fandom in the 1990s to confirm any of it But the one big thing is...I'm pretty sure 'Dragon Ball AF' was originally supposed to stand for 'April Fools'. Like at one point someone somewhere started the name just because it'd be hilarious to trick people into believing something with a name so obviously-fake if you were paying attention. But when people started believing it they came up with their own theories on what it meant. kanzenshuu also says the rumours probably only started around 2002-2003 https://www.kanzenshuu.com/rumor/dragon-ball-af/

There were some factual errors, but the one that stood out to me was the notion of Toyotaro creating Towa and Mira, since I'd always heard Toriyama created her for Dragon Ball Online. And I've heard of the Goku Black/Xicor parallels before, but I'm pretty sure that's more of a coincidence than anything else.

I also found the 1990s to be a little too early for AF rumors to really get started, so I went back to that Kanzenshuu article you linked to and read it again just to check. This time, I ran across the link to the message board discussion about the "SSJ5 Goku" image that seems to have started it all.

Apparently, this was all discovered back in 2012, but I don't think I ever heard about this until now. Someone found the "AF Goku" image in an issue of the magazine Hobby Consolas, cover dated May 1999.

It looks like the magazine just published reader-submitted fan art, and this particular one was credited to David Montiel Franco of Alicante, Spain. Forums member Raykugan published this information in February 2012, and then Derek Padula contacted the artist and published his findings on his blog "Dao of Dragon Ball".

David Montiel Franco, as it turns out, has his own blog, af-dragonball.blogspot.com, where he appears to be promoting his Dragon Ball AF fancomics. And apparently, the guy in the image is not Super Saiyan 5 Goku at all, but an OC named Tablos.

So it appears that the true original DBAF was a fanwork created by Franco prior to May 1999. Everyone else was building onto his creation whether they knew it or not. The alternative is that Franco is stealing the credit from the true artist, but that seems like a weird thing to still be holding onto after all these years. I mean, if he wanted clout, you'd think he'd do more self-promotion than this. By now, everyone would have heard of his claims to be the creator of AF. So I think he might be the real deal.

Anyway, it definitely ties DBAF to the year 1999, although I have a feeling the rumors didn't really pick up steam until 2002 or so, as U.S. fans became aware of a sequel series to Z and wondered what might follow after that. There may have been rumors in other countries that got earlier access to GT, and there were surely American fans in the 90's who knew more about GT before it was localized. But at least the concept of AF was around in the 90's, even if it was the tail end of the 90's, and even if it was very obscure.

But that's AF in general, not Xicor. I get the sense that Vintagegeekculture seemed to conflate Tablos with Xicor, and that's probably an understandable mistake to make, since Xicor was probably invented as a response to what was thought to be SSJ5 Goku. So Xicor must have come later, but how much later?

I guess what bugs me is that there ought to be someone who would claim credit for the character, the way Franco claimed to be the artist of the DBAF image. It's kind of fascinating how Xicor is out there and no one's trying to act like it was their idea.

YESSS I'm glad I made you nostalgic for that movie bc low-key it's just such a good movie... Ever since Cinderella 2 (which isn't that great of a movie it's like a 5/10 at best, except for the Anastasia part) I've been super fond of Anastasia. I think it's lovely that they didn't give her any sort of big transformation in both movies, in the second one they just gave her actually good fashion while working on her personality and the third one just focused on her personality... And Anastasia came out beautiful inside and out🥹

It's wonderful for everyone, especially the girls who had issues with their appearances, to look at a character who's supposed to be "ugly" yet they see that her appearance doesn't matter, and it's more about her actions... And I'm sure the "everyone deserves love" scene at the end of the 3rd movie really spoke to a lot of girls, maybe even some guys😭 it's just,,, such a lovely message :((

It also speaks a lot about Cinderella herself, because she could've easily been bitter and not given Anastasia a second chance, but she's such a genuine and kind person, she believes so much in the goodness of people that she didn't waste a second to STAND IN FRONT OF ANASTASIA when her stepmother tried to put a spell on them, and she didn't waste a moment to accept her after everything was over😭😭 in both movies may I add!!! And the second one is even more impressive because Anastasia didn't 100% had her change yet but Cinderella still decided to help her!!

Sigh... I love Cinderella 3 and Cinderella and Anastasia 🥹

yeah saying this again: pokemon fans piss me off. they hate the newer games when guess what: they are pretty much exactly the same (if not better) than the older games story and character wise. If anything the games re getting better with more gameplay, bigger worlds, technology is just generally getting more advanced.

youre just not ten years old anymore and youre jaded hypercritical adults. Trust me i’ve literally played all the games (except for the black and white sequels. and platnium. but ive played black and diamond so :/) i have experience with pretty much all the games and i can say for certain: its all just pokemon. and i love the older games as much as the next guy (Johto is SO nostalgic! Sinnoh is beautiful and one of my favorite regions, the older generations are beautiful and so fun and rich with stuff to enjoy)

but honestly the story and gameplay has only gotten better if youd give it a chance. i was hesitant to play swsh because i had heard bad things about it: but its a really good game with wonderful characters! and scarlet and violet is also fucking amazing with the different storylines, the beautiful new models and textures, the new gameplay and freedom to do what you want in this new world, the music, the ending which blew me away: Its all great. Legends arceus is the best pokemon game they ever made fight me.

People complain about “bugs and glitches” that are very rare and do not hardly ever interfere with gameplay. people complain about the graphics or animations like “its not realistic enough, i wish it was better or more” sorry to break it to you: The graphics are fine, not everything needs to be super realistic (cartoony styles are good actually). I never even understood that complaint because ESPECIALLY in scarlet and violet when weve FINALLY got brand new models with NEW TEXTURES and stuff: The graphics look better than they ever have! and the animation complaint is fucking stupid, it is literally on par with (and id argue better than) games like black and white and yall seem to love that game. the pokemon move all the time and have unique animations, and even the way your character stands, their idle animations when they shivers in the cold, looks around with wonder in their eyes: im sorry its way better than it was before and i just. cant take that shit seriously

YVIE NNILKYWAY my light my life my pumpkin pie omg ok so i am the Most indecisive person on the face of this entire planet and my top 5 movies Of All Time will literally change day to day and i watch movies a lot less than i do tv shows but. today my top 5 movies Of All Time include (in no particular order):

1. everything everywhere all at once bc i am the eldest gay daughter to asian immigrant parents and let me tell u . i walked out of that theater with all of my makeup transferred to the inside of my mask and None of it left on my face from the sheer force of my tears. idk it is just so special to me it Gets Me i have never felt so seen and i have never ever cried so hard at a movie before and it’s just one of those movies that permanently changed the chemistry of my brain (+mitski in the soundtrack ! hello !) i need to rewatch it so bad actually

2. ratatouille! idk what to say about this one it’s just so nostalgic and such a comfort movie and i could watch it a billion times for the rest of my life and never get bored! the vibes the ambiance the bittersweet ending idk it just is so 🫂🫂🫂🫂 to me just the embodiment of a hug

3. the empire strikes back is also one of the most comfort movies of all time for me !! and IDK i don’t rewatch star wars as much as i should probably because there are so many movies and i get overwhelmed so i’ve seen the others like once or twice each, maybe a few more for a new hope but esb i’ve watched like. a million times EASY. just everything about it!! the iconic ice planet hoth opening and the hanleia moments and everything about luke in this movie is so top tier. such a classic feel and watching it feels like the equivalent of a warm mug of tea for my brain. just also feeling very star wars today so that might be playing into a bit but this movie is just mwah chefs kiss for Me

A (not soo teensy) headcanon about Matt and Casey I haven't talked about yet:

Something Matt and Casey really missed on the spaceship was rain. Stilwater and London both get over 100 days of rain and it's one of those things you don't realise you miss until it's gone.

Like, yeah, OK, everyone time jumps to Earth. The Saints go to sunny beaches, they play in the snow, they walk in the autumn breeze. So yes, they do end up out in the rain at times. But something is missing. It's that feeling when you're just laying in bed and the rain is beating down hard on the windows.

Ragnarok, however has a lot of lush forests, and while the exact process is unclear, it's hypothesised that forested regions generate more water vapour meaning more rainfall. So I think it's fair to say that the new planet sees a reasonable amount of rain.

In Matt and Casey's first house on their new planet, they would hear the rain on the windows and it was such a comfort. Missed, atmospheric, nostalgic. It sounded the nicest on the skylight above their dining table though.

So by the time two of three devastating alien attacks had occured, and they were building their new and most refined house, they put their bedroom on the top floor with four large roof windows. So when it's raining they can just cuddle up in bed at any time of day, and just listen to and watch the rain together.

About my sequel fic

So the plot of my sequel focuses on the third of the aforementioned alien attacks. The starting scene is the final scene of the penultimate chapter of the first fic, "An Introduction" (the bulk of that chapter focuses on Casey finally telling the remainder of the team her real name so that's the double meaning for that particular chapter) but from Matt's point of view.

This is a slight change in format; chapters will alternate between Matt and Casey's point of view throughout, with the beginning/end sections being told from various Saints' perspectives rather than the same person the chapter is told from as seen in Out Of Time. My working title is Out Of Focus.

This attack has a similar "attack them before they become important" theme as the first one, but in this both Casey and Matt are being targeted, as due to events in the first story, their names are pretty well-known throughout the universe.

The same "cannot encounter yourself" rules apply as well as Johnny not being able to travel back as it'll alert Zinyak, so the now pretty large team of Saints has to be divided between DC (Matt, Asha, Charlie, Ward, Riley, Jezebel), London (Casey, Shaundi, Pierce, Daniel, Charlie) and the ship (Kinzie, Johnny, Keith, Rhys, CID, Ben). These are just proposed teams and also I can't remember if I've remembered all the 2023 Saints but you get the picture 😅

Obviously as I am more of a romance writer than anything else, there is a focus on the fact FOUR couples are torn apart by this situation, and what is/was going on in their relationships prior to this. Matt and Casey are dealing with fertility issues, Pierce and Rhys are planning their wedding, Charlie and Ward are having some problems and this is practically a trial separation for them, and Kinzie and Riley will maybe find this brings them closer (I've not quite established where they are relationship wise which is why this is vague). I'm not opposed to some Shasha coming into play somewhere too... y'know I had Johnny make a joke about them in the last fic but now I'm actually thinking about it...?

Anyway there's a lot of things at play where Matt and Casey can't tell each others past selves they're together in case it prevents their relationship playing out as it does. I won't spoil all the subplots but yeah, I have a lot of thoughts. A vague overall idea. Much like the first one, I imagine I'll be in the mood to write one day and it'll just happen.

Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall

Another case of a book that I couldn't put down once I picked it up.

It's fun, it's witty, it's touching and it has one of my favorite tropes, the Fake Dating to Lovers, both characters are deeply flawded and they complement each other very well; the story is so well written and has such fun dinamics between their main and side characters and touching moments that will stay with you for a long time.

As soon as I was done reading it I wanted to read it all over again, and when I found out there was sequel coming out in August I couldn't be happier!

If you're a fan of romantic comedy and queer books, this is a must read.

hello! deimos here~

can you believe the only thing i watched on your list was back to the future? i havent had the opportunity to watch the others, but i've heard of most of them (and want to watch them)

ahh, except for victorious. i've watched a few episodes, but i'm more of an icarly person (every once in a while i binge watch it) :)

honestly, i think my favourite part of the presentation was watching my friend's performance. we played an adaptation of the addams family musical. he played lurch and it was SO amazing! i liked our dance bit as well but it was quite stressful (we were all so nervous!) and our three minute song seemed to be like 30 seconds long when we were dancing so.......it was weird jfnwkfnekfnsj

i like pluto a lot as well (i know that technically it isnt a planet anymore but its too precious! justice for pluto!!!!). its a bit hard to research about it because in greek mythology there's pluto, who later became hades, and plutus, son of demeter with a mortal man. the planet's name is from hades as far as i know, and i must admit i LOVE hades. the man is just so precious. i dont know if im biased because of lore olympus (i read the webtoon a few years ago. never finished it, but liked it so much) or if i actually have canon reasons to love him, i just know i do.

ahh, back to the future is my all-time favorite film! what did you think of it? have you also seen sequels? if not, i highly recommend that you watch them! the second installment in the trilogy takes a weird route, but the third movie perfectly ties it all together i promise!

yesss, icarly and victorious are the perfect shows to watch for a nostalgic binge-watching session! i don’t blame you for preferring icarly because the show lasted a bit longer and, unlike victorious, it had a proper series finale that’s actually canon. although, i still personally prefer victorious because for some reason i like the friendship dynamic between the main characters better. (oh, and sikowitz. who doesn’t love his endearing eccentricities?)with that being said, what are your favorite episodes of icarly? who, in your opinion, is the best character?

omg that’s awesome!! that must’ve been such a blast to do an adaptation of the addams family musical! you guys must’ve had so much fun, especially when singing the famous theme song! and yes, stage fright is extremely terrifying—there is no doubt about that! the thought of performing in front of a bunch of people can immediately place you into a state of apprehensiveness. but once you go out there, all those nerves just dissipate and as you said, a 3 minute song feels like 30 seconds. time really goes by when you’re preoccupied.

honestly? pluto still is and forever will be a planet despite what anyone else has to say about it. are we just going to completely disregard what we learned in elementary school about all the planets? hell no. we should start a sociopolitical movement called ‘justice for pluto’ because it doesn’t deserve this slander. also, i just finished reading the 20th issue of the ‘lore olypmus’ webtoon you mentioned and you’re absolutely right about hades being precious! he’s so in love with persephone (who’s also incredibly adorable herself) hopefully, minthe won’t try to ruin anything between them because they’re so friggin cute. i wonder, if deimos is in this story too? that’d be a nice addition!

TT... if you find that you want more after the ending, don't worry!! there is an am:vl spinoff sm!au where they have frequent reappearances, even through the children's banter lol ヾ(≧▽≦*)o blood of the covenant by @.ryungswr. myungyun, chaptered, finished. religious themes, vampire!myungdae, and 1900s vibes, all wrapped into one?? nainai never really thought that it would work with myungyun, but considering bite me era, i dont think i should be surprised.. the way yongsun was handled here made me gasp!! his character was very iconic (as much as i hate to say it LOL) and impacted the story.. poetically written, give it five stars o(￣▽￣)ｄ... if you finish reading it but want more, there's a crack au and a no-schedule 'sequel'! sunflower and angel's trumpet by @.0425zz. lunette, florist!linette x mafia!dailu, chaptered, ongoing. i was a casual dreamie listener, but this made me look into the group even further.. if you like old money aesthetics, double life, and very dynamic character dynamics, please read this story.. the characterization is so fun and refreshing, and there are direct references to sweeties' inside jokes lol. there's even ANGST!! AND I THOUGHT SWEETIES WERE ALLERGIC TO ANGST!!!! /HVYJ....... and it's so well done...... it will make you cry. TT....... chapter 57 'poppy' is nainai's biggest opp. (╯▔皿▔)╯!!! grrrr i will get you, zizi.. bite the bullet by @.88czns and @.mawuwamaz. ot6 rdwy (myeongyoko, magnetz, flowerz) ft. dreamie, mafia au, multi-fic series, ongoing. btb is not one fic, but multiple inside one named bundle! it is basically many stories set in the same universe with the same characters lol. my personal favorite is the flowerz one, because while the dynamic is similar to sunflower and marigold.. there is something more shocking when you get to the middle point hehe. btb has too many good things to talk about, so nainai suggests that you check it out for yourself and leave a reblog!! 🙇‍♂️ we are endless by @.endeulset. post-disbandment, ot7, chaptered, finished. nainai believes that this one is the most emotional, especially for endeuls.. two chapters cover one member (except for seongsu2 who stick together in their chapters) and detail speculations, how they feel about separating from czn and skytali, staying to work there (like sunwoo, jeonghui, and jiyoon), and even having a special chapter inspired by subin's twitter post with the bunnies at the restaurant.. it's very nostalgic and melancholic, your heart feels calm as you read ^^. as an endeul, it made me feel happy for the members, knowing that they've gone on paths that they know they'll be truly happy with.. but they'll still find ways to be together that's all!! maybe nainai will make a bigger post with all her recs, but that's for another day..

Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003)

sometimes we dont deserve nice things. space jam was a stupid but entertaining movie, carried mostly by it's soundtrack and lola. it made tons of money at the box office, so a sequel was greenlit, aiming to have the looney tunes more in character amidst the context of a spy movie. it was legitimately good and guess what? it fucking bombed.

it could've been because it came out around the same time the massive hit Elf did, but warner bros blamed anime for some reason, temporarily retired the looney tunes, and made loonatics unleashed. great going guys. at least i did my part and was one of the chosen few who watched this movie in theaters. it's a movie that holds a lot of nostalgic significance to me, so i admit my judgement might be a bit clouded, but i'll just say this movie still holds up.

while it's overall plot is (deliberately) stupid and wacky, the jokes are still really funny; i was surprised just how much i laughed during it, and just how much of the movie i ended up remembering despite the last time i watched it being close to two decades ago at this point. this is secretly the third and final james bond movie featuring timothy dalton, except he has been KIDNAPPED and it's up to his son, brendan fraser, jenna elfman, bugs bunny, and daffy duck to save him from the clutches of the diabolical steve martin, who is the best part of the movie.

it's a fun mix of live action and animation, a style that was rare back then and still pretty much is, and while it's no roger rabbit (than again what is?), it's still a treat for anyone who loves the WB style of animation, and if you like looney tunes (like me :3) i highly recommend it. just don't go in expecting Skyfall with bugs bunny of course.

new mario and luigi is HUGE after alphadream got shut down I assumed that franchise was dead........ it looks so good too the art style translated so well to 3d!!!

the mario party game too we are SOOOO fucking back. my expectations were on the FLOOR when I saw it was a sequel of sorts to super mario party (extremely mid) but then they showed off the new boards oh my god they're HUGE. supers boards were tiny and boring as fuck to play on but these ones look COOL!!!!!!!!!! also WESTERN LAND?!!?!!! hype hype we are so fucking back mario party might be good again

THE ZELDA GAME I AM FUCKING LOSING IT!!!!!!!! I AM LOSING IT!!!!!!!!!! !! it's in the links awakening remake art style, which i absolutely ADORE!!! not only that but it's a NEW TOP DOWN ZELDA!!!!!!!! after so long of botw and totk (im sure we all know how I feel about those) this feels sooooo fucking good to my nostalgic ass already. bringing back the oot designs of zelda and other enemies, DEKU SCRUBS, BOTH KINDS OF ZORA AT ONCE????? and of course, the single most hype part of this game - THE FIRST MAINLINE ZELDA GAME TO FEATURE ZELDA AS THE FUCKING PROTAGONIST!!!!!!!!!!! SHE'S FUCKING PLAYABLE!!!!!!!!!!!! SHE'S THE PROTAGONIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OHHHHHH MY GODDDDDD. and the gameplay looks so interesting too!!!! she doesn't appear to actually have a weapon of her own, so the tri rods object copying gimmick is the only way to interact with everything in the world - but it's such an open ended gimmick!!!! it's so fascinating because it's clearly a method of marrying the open game design from the botw era with a top down styled game!!! what the fuck...... im so excited what the fuck

i expected absolutely nothing from this direct. after the only new news for first party nintendo games from last year was 3 ports/remasters/remakes and a clearly much smaller scoped game in princess peach show time, with the knowledge of the next console on the way, I really didn't expect anything except for maybe more remasters and ports. but this is insane. I feel insane. this is insane. this is incredible. what the fuck. what the fuck.

also before I forget, that indie (?) we got a glimpse at - mio - looked REALLY interesting too. I'll keep an eye out for that.

my Favorite piece of lost media is the series Maple Town!!

consisting of the original Maple Town Stories anime, two 30 minute films, and its sequel New Maple Town Stories: Palm Town Chapter.

while not entirely lost, the full original series is not very easily obtainable if youre an English speaker. ive yet to find a (working) torrent but i know there have been some out there in both Japanese and French. (JP rip of original 52 MTS episodes HERE! no subs) an English dub was originally planned to broadcast in the US for 65 episodes, only 39 of which aired, and from there only about 28 episodes ended up available thanks to a fan made DVD compilation. very few of the Saban dub were actually officially released on VHS.

personally i have yet to buy the DVD but i would really like to considering i still cant find rips of more than a few episodes. most fan projects ive seen involving dubbing/subbing the series have unfortunately fallen through afaik :( though there is a subbed version of the 30 minute Palm Town film available on youtube!

you may actually recognize this series from THIS video that went a little viral in 2018!! the clip originates from the Palm Town Chapter!

or perhaps their Maple Friends figures Tonka released to its US audience! (not to be confused with Sylvanian Families!!!)

it had its fair share of figurines & playsets made and sold from the late 80s to the early 90s. of course there was Japanese merch as well! i havent come across much but it ranges from cameras, to play sets, to this cute bag!! vvv

the reason i even initially discovered this series was because of the roller skating clip from Palm Town- which i sometimes still see reposted on twitter. i think the reason i fell so in love with it aside from the art was just the fact that it found me at a really dark time. it was something i could dedicate my time to, searching for episodes and browsing forums, and something that brought me so much joy that i almost started feeling nostalgic for it despite not even being born when it aired. the familiarity of it all made me feel a sense of comfort, and the thrill of unearthing content id never seen would reel me in time and time again. thankfully after all this time i still feel that way even if i find im not as invested in my searches as i was before.

to put it simply, for me Maple Town Stories is the warm hug of a fireplace after a very, very long walk home in the rain.

Having worked on the soundtrack with a full symphony orchestra, I can’t wait to hear what the French duo have come up with.Ģ3. Judging by the song titles though it looks like we’re going to be getting a mixture of more traditional Daft Punk songs, like Outlands and Derezzed which have been leaked so far, but also more classical inspired pieces, with tracks like Adagio for Tron, and Nocturne referencing classical forms. sometimes some of us are bright enough to recognize a huge turd without having to step in it first.Titled Outlands, the tracks, as you can see below, is the 9th out of 22 songs set to be on the soundtrack, which so far looks set to be pretty fucking rad.

star trek 2009 and terminator both sucked ass for removing thier original music (i would have been happy even with original classic tv show music than the terrible star trek 2009 score).i knew it would suck and was correct, im predicting it for tron 2. after seeing them remove the cool disc throwing and derezing, im borederline on skipping reboots in general. where would indy or jaws or psycho be without thier great soundtracks? im also betting the original cast is in less than 15 minutes of the reboot disguised as a sequel. sequel and reboot making is pretty much a no brainer. I am tired of shit reboot after shit reboot and shit sequel with 20 year old cokeheads aparently not bright enough to recognize music and costume continuity. At least lucas has enough brains not to drop. terminator, bond and and star trek all SUCK after removing original scores. music is 89% of a movie, dropping carlos's original score is one of the things that made tron 1 great. How many 20 year olds does it take to completely screw up a franchise? franchises do poorly when they drop original music scores that made them what they were. It's so easy to ruin a masterpiece by thoughtlessly rehashing it. Now they're going further and messing with its DNA.
