ive loved it since i first heard it in project diva x years ago, but listening to Tsumi no Namae again (with slightly higher quality headphone audio rather than my vita speakers <3 ) i didnt realize just how crazy the production choices of this song is. wait hold on lemme hashtag musicpost for a minute. im busting out the timestamps

immediate tone setting. bagpipes??? or something like that right out the gate which is wild. clock winding, gear crunching, and real human woman whispering (i think in english but ive never been able to find official lyrics of that section) as well <3 im a sucker for using human voices with synth voices i think it adds a lot of neat texture

the instrument choices lean into a fantasy musical-esque soundscape for obvious reason (the whole song is basically a little original fable or myth type story complete with trickster goddesses and breaking fate's curses etc etc) but the composition is plenty pop rock which is a fun juxtaposition im always a fan of but like SPECIFICALLY those drums that start around a minute in. im not sure what it is, the speed? how loud and hard the drums are? it works so well to give it a forward momentum while also being a bit uncanny. maybe im just imagining how tired the drummers arms would be hitting at that speed and with that amount of power for this long........ but yeah it gives it this unexpected, sorta otherworldly feel, like its just a fraction of a fraction faster than you'd assume. theres like hints of clapping and stuff in there too i think? so much all together but so so so good

and speaking of how tired those drummers arms would be, i do love that this song is six and a half minutes, i love stuff over 5 minutes like YES i am going to waste SO MUCH TIME staring into space and listening really hard (i like to listen to songs on loop <3 half an hour is gonna go away in just a few plays) i love love love love love it

Some thoughts on AI in art

Here are some thoughts on AI genertade images in art.

Some of these are mine, one of them is from Richard Williams book "The animator`s survival kit" and two of them are comments to a youtube video that talks about AI in art. (I have given credits to the original authors of those comments.)

A.I. is good and all but do we need A.I. art? Wasnt the point of A.I. that it would take over jobs that were too boring, difficult or dangerous for humans? Is doodling on a piece of paper too difficult now? A.I. art is for the consumer who wants their product delivered right NOW. A.I. art can be used as trainingwheels for artists but it shouldnt be the finished product. Are we artists or are we consumers?

AI image generators is great for lazy, impatient people who have no intention to learn how make their own art and are too cheap to hire an artist to draw for them.

AI is a tool, a double-edged sword. It can be used for a lot of fun things it can also work as a shortcut for lazy people. To be good at art takes time and effort and people are not very likely to want to learn how to create a painting if it is just the push of a few buttons away. The journey of learning is also an important part of becoming an artist.

Calling yourself an artist when you upload fully AI generated pictures is like calling yourself a chef because you heated some leftovers in the microwave oven.

When you tell an AI to generate some pics youre not the artist, youre the one who commissions the artwork, youre the employer. Now dont misunderstand what Im trying to say, this doesnt makes you bad, it just doesn`t make you the artist.

One thing that bugs me is when people say that AI "democratizes" art. It does not. I have seen sites on the internet, channels on youtube (Istebrak, Winged Canvas) and profiles on deviantart (Ethertingtonbrothers) filled with tutorials that teaches people how to draw. (How to draw perspective, buildings, wrinkles in clothes and more.) Heck, even before the internet there were short tutorials in Disney comic magazines (just to name one example) on how to draw Disney characters (like Donald Duck, Goofy, Mickey Mouse and others). Art was democratized long before AI. Just like everyone else I started from zero and am slowly learning more. Just because you know nothing in the beginning doesnt mean that you cant learn and just because youre not good at something doesnt mean that you cant get better at it. "But it takes time." Some will say. Thats right, art takes time. Art. Takes. Time. Sure, AI is faster, but it`s also like taking piano lessons on a self playing piano.

AI generated images are like the photorealistic remake of the Lion King: Sure, the technology is impressive but still… why?

A lot of what I've been seeing about the "wonders" of AI art, it's never really impressed me because it plays off of the novelty of this being able to replicate styles without an artist's hand. I'm more impressed with its application to speed up certain production processes by being a supplement to the artist's vision. I feel people get so enamored by the flashiness of some new technology and go all in on that for the news outlets when its practical application is more subtle and boring. -Yensid951927 (youtube)

The reason people don't mess around with the music industry is because they have conglomerates and lawyers in place to punish those who don't respect their property. It may be cynical but I think the only thing that will keep artists safe from these bro personalities are legitimate financial threat and follow through. I think a limited version of AI, as a tool, can help actual artists do their work better but never replace it. Do you have any tips for new fic writers? I posted a fic and no one has really read it yet :(

Um, good question! I understand how that feels though, see: The Easy Winners lol. Overall I have been fairly successful across my different accounts though so I do have some tips & hopefully it helps. But I am blunt here, I’ve been writing fanfic for too long to pretend any of this isn’t true.

AO3 speaking, if this is your first fanfic in the fandom then it is going to push your fic back a few pages, and by that time no one will see it. You might just need to wait for the next update, unfortunately, to see whether there’ll be any success there.

The days matter. Pity on the writer who posts on Sunday nights when Of Bright Stars and Burning Hearts or any of the other popular fics update. Also, weekends get more posts than weekdays. When I posted Meet Me by the River on a Wednesday, it stayed on the front page for hours. You’re going to have to have some strategy here.

Hype it. I’m shameless, alright, I hype my fics. I give updates on my blog about my fic. When I post, I make a post for it on tumblr with a pretty banner and tag it from here to kingdom come, with #victuuriwriters as my first tag bc goodness knows it might help. I reblog it on a sideblog of mine that has almost 3k followers even though it’s unrelated content because it’s exposure, and if you have a somewhat successful blog too, why not? It helps. Hell, send it into victuurificrec, they take anonymous messages & you’ll be featured in that fic rec friday posting. You know how when writers publish a book they get a frickload of marketing? Book readings, signings, even commercials, the like? So reblog that link 100 times. Authors worked hard on their writing and so did you, you’re allowed to promote yourself. Don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise. Be proud.

Speaking of hyping, setting a schedule helps. It gives your readers something to look forward to definitively instead of failing to notice when you give an update.

Also along hyping, sometimes giving sneak previews help. Like, posting an excerpt before the actual chapter. If readers see good writing right then and there, they might be more interested in the rest.

There’s just some stuff that the fandom prefers over other things. YoI is a happy fandom, people like happy stories with happy endings for most of it within fanfic. You’re going to feel like you have to cater to your readers. In a sense, you do. It sucks, my god does it suck. Ivan da Maria took a hit because it has that nice “major character death” tag and no one wants that. No one wants to look beyond that, because there’s the assumption of no happy ending right off that bat. And damn is this fandom thirsty for happy endings. Sometimes you kinda just have to accept that the subject isn’t popular within fandom and consider maybe moving on. I wish I could tell you something optimistic here, but it’s best just to acknowledge now that maybe your obscure history or w/e au isn’t going to get much interest from the fandom. Try and gauge what it does want.

This has only happened to me in this one case, but piggybacking on something else works oddly well. Let’s be real, Meet Me by the River probably wouldn’t have gotten so much attention without my Russian crash course reeling me in attention beforehand. And then, I somehow got hyped by 2 well-known people in fandom. It’s really unfair and for me it was pretty much plain luck that everything aligned like this, but piggybacking on something (or someone) else works.

Try and get it beta’d, because if they’re good and honest, they’ll tell you beforehand whether a chapter is exciting or not. Also, I guess being beta’d is supposed to be the prestigious trend now.

The I Know When I Need to Save Myself  Tactic: or in standard English, if you put all your effort into some fic week after week and it has little popularity, that one motivator for fanfic (bc goodness knows we’re not paid for this or anything, hits/kudos is all we get), sometimes you need to put it down before it hurts you more. Sometimes, it’s just time to move on, if you find the kudos count more disheartening than your story can uplift you. You think I put that “if this gets good reception I’ll continue this story” note lightly in MMbtR? I still agonize over it because it can come off as manipulative. But as someone who’s been in the fanfic game for 6 years, I know to have some respect for myself, sometimes even over how much I love the story sadly enough, and I make that clear. Thank you for reading, but if my work matters to no one, I have more productive things to do with my time. It sounds bad directly, but for goodness sake save your mental health. Have a decent amount of respect for yourself and your work. I’m really not trying to be mean/negative, I want the best for you.

I’m sorry I can’t give you more, that there isn’t some easy to follow algorithm for this. Sometimes fic popularity is just dumb luck, I wish I was kidding. I’ll try and help you in any other way I can, new writers deserve a chance. I wish you more luck in your hits/kudos, Nonny, seriously. Don’t quit writing over this (goodness knows I’ve seen a lot of good writers quit because of this exact problem), but do remember:  fanfic your mental health.

11 Anti LO Asks

1. TBH to me im also confused reading LO bc it both takes itself way too seriously but also not at the same time? like it wants us to feel like its this grand dramatic epic that takes serious issues and all, only to be so full of slapstick and juvenile "humor" and hip "relatable" humor that its like?? well which one is it then??

2. Im glad im not the only one who noticed, at least in terms of their relationship to hades, persephone and minthe are exactly the same. the difference is minthe has everything to lose, has no support and she doenst "deserve" him, meanwhile persephone has everything, gets everything, and "deserves" hades because she coddles him and she conforms to him & his wants, which minthe never do. im not saying minthe doesnt have her issues, but her not doing exactly what he wanted lead to her demise.

3. i love the excuse of constantly making lo persephone naked is "being accurate to ancient art" because one thats not how ancient art was?? only aphrodite and maybe amphitrite were depicted without clothes, but even that most of that was a post-antiquity/roman trend to show they could do anatomy correctly, but more so persephone specifically (minus the bernini statue which wasnt in ancient times) was always clothed? like yall just make up whatever to excuse rachel being wrong no matter what, huh?

4. LO is hardly the only romance comic to have this issue but it def runs off he fact the readers knowing theyll get together in the end to excuse its actual lack of developing them as a couple. rachel basically made two characters who wouldnt even talk to each other under normal circumstances and is just running off them being well known instead of making their relationship actually make sense. if we didnt know they were a canon myth couple, would anyone buy theyre in love? Probably not.

5. i see an excuse that LO's characterization should be excused because "rachel is making them complex" and its like ... the greek gods?? need to be made complex?? what are you lot on to think rachel is "improving" on the gods, esp when theyre just made into one note assholes with her deciding if theyre "good" or not depending on if they kiss persephone and hades' ass or not.  thats not complexity??

6. rachel literally cannot help herself to overemphasize how child like persephone is while also doing the same to emphasize how old and weird hades is and then still acts shocked people think its a creepy relationship? like you cant constantly make a point hes an old man lusting after a barely legal young woman and then be up in arms that people get weirded out by it.

7. oh my god the trial IS going into december and maybe even longer. she literally stretched it over months when it could have been at most three weeks. i hate it here.

8. RS is really just throwing whatever she can at the wall at this point isn't she. Here, now Hades has titan powers for no reason! He can turn into a spider now! Persephone made elysium now and has to teach him torturing the dead is wrong! Meanwhile other plots are either rushed (Daphne, Minthe) or that should be wrapped up by now or even have a little focus on them is just ignored, dropped, or retconned in some weird way, Like girl, take a month off and plan this out on a google spreadsheet.

9. the funny part about how pissed rachel gets at being accused of "stealing from percy jackson" is ... she unintentionally does? like PJO popularized "persephone was a b-tier nobody before marrying hades", promoted demeter was irrational helicopter mom, and also (incorrectly) popularized titans being literal giants, all of which rachel put in LO. now she probably only picked these up from tumblr posts but those are from PJO, so in a roundabout way she did kind of steal from PJO, just unknowingly.

MCGILLIS MY BELOVED!!!! perhaps the only char clone that matters. this dude brings back the classic level of backstabbing, the supreme attractiveness, and in general, being an awful person. but i can't help but feel for the guy. he was trying his goddamn hardest to overturn a fucked up system. he also simply could not fathom having friends. mcgillis might only do the mask thing for a little and also wears a wig (McWiggis) but i forgive him, because the moves he does in bael are truly sexy. i adore mcgillis i have to rate him high but he cannot overtake the classic. 19/10 would let him betray me

Integenerational guitar

It baffles me how Callie tried to deny her fathers family ever loved her yet the guitar she treasures so much is a physical manifestation of it

God that guitar was her great great grandfathers. From the center region of the island up in the mountains old Don Jesus who everyone called Chu' played. Then he passed it down to her son when he died, and his son to his son. They both new basic rythims Chu had passed on, and played it on festive occations but nothing more. Years passed and Chu's grandson died, and Eugenia, the grandsons daughter was left with the guitar.

It was old and uncared for and she considered throwing it away.

Then her son, Luis, begged his to uncle to fix it. Luis uncle, José, was a wood carver. A very good one. Luis took the guitar from his mothers things qnd begged his uncle to fix it because

Out of love for his nephew José did, he brought the old guitar back to life.Luis made it his mission to learn to play, and was the first to play as diligently as Chu did. Eugenia always thought hearing Luis play was like having a piece of her late family back in her walls.

Luis plan had always been to teach his daughter the moment her fingers were long enough to reach the strings. And even when they werent you could still see him discretly making his daughter laugh by putting her hands on the strings and shaking them around. 43. Do you have any certain types when making ocs? Do you tend to favor some certain traits or looks?

Ok so the first thing that came to mind is that I do favor curly hairtypes a lot. Most my Oc's have curly hair, raging from 3a all the way to 4c. Personally, I think this stem from the fact my mom despised her curly hair and she'd always straighten it, saying it looked prettier that way while i loved her hair and wanted mine to look like hers. So I kinda made most my characters have hair that resembled hers and just went ahead to describe them as gorgeus because i still want her to love her hair. Now will my mom be reading my stories rn? Absolutely not she once found a page of drafting thrown around my room and when i saw her reading it I had a panic attack

But some day when I get over it I'll show it and I hope she finds it nice.

When i make characters more often than not I just go for whatever the story needs or what the other characters need in their lifes, but I do abuse the self projection and I do notice a lot of ocs are artistically inclined. Not all, but most of their hobbies are either hobbies i have or want irl.

25. The Oc that resembles you the most? (Same hobie/ height/shared interest)

I've always read making an oc is dividing your soul into pieces and giving one to each character. So everyone has a lil bit of me sewed in their outlines, but I've always said if I had to describe my personality its just Calisto and Emmanuel.

Callie resembles me the most physically, has a good part of my musical hobbies (plays guitar, does percussion, sings ) and just other things i enjoy. Has the same "flight" instinct I've been known to struggle with, emotional inteligence, and is useless saphic which same. Humor as a coping mechanism, hates having to confront bad feelings, mild obsession with stickers.

She's also has adhd and I sometimes use her as a way to process my own undiagnoaed fustration because my culture not believing in mental health is not fun

But Emmanuel, Emmanuel is like "What if i just layed everything i've struggled with and personify it"

We have the same enneagram personality type, 2w1 so that should tell you enough. I dont wanna go into a full rant about how much he means to me how much his arc means to me because, I still have some decency but

Aside from that, I gave him the most fundamental part of me which is my love for Puerto Rico. Hes what youd call "boricua de pura sepa". He has my love for my island, my love for its history, love for my culture. And also the yearning to see it free. He dances bomba (like i did when i wss younger) and also other folkloric dances. Also a theater kid cause yeah id be dammed if he wasnt.

Hes a caretaker, likes taking care of people to a fault. Besides his extroverted personality he just really wants to be assured hes loved and tries to make himself useful in peoples life to gain that.

@jordanthecat11 : Jordy is just a big mush of sweETNESS, literally she’s just AMAZING- I met her through Pai since she was Pai’s main contributor to BATMC. It was awkward at first, but as we got to know eachother I say from my point of view I got really comfortable talking with her! Not only that she is like...so caring. So. Very. Caring. There will be times where I’m not feeling to well, and she takes the time to send me a message on discord to check up on me. I look up to her a lot, she so talented and creative and just overall the kind of friend you want to have. ❤️

At first I got a wave of anxiety mainly because long before I actually existed on my tumblr acc, I would look at her art and be really inspired. Not only that we started to talk on discord and..can I just say she is the most understanding person ever? deputy! the code that forbids warriors from becoming deputies unless they’ve trained apprentices isn’t a part of the code anymore; leaders do tend to pick older warriors who have or currently are training warriors to be deputies, but it’s not a specific requirement like it is in canon!

medicine cats! 1. medicine cats are referred to as “seers” in this verse (mainly bc it’s short and sweet, plus it fits the single-word terms for ranks!) and 2. seers can have mates and kits in the clan! i’ll explain this further when i address caretakers, but seers are allowed to have romantic relationships within their clan as well as having kits as they don’t need to be in the nursery to care for the kits (i scrapped that rule because all it ever did was add drama and also the whole “if they have a mate and kits then theyll care about them more than the rest of the clan!” did not make sense to me at all because like….if thats what youre worried about then you need to have a cat who has literally NO friends OR family to be a medicine cat bc they might care about their parents, siblings, best friends, kin, etc. before the rest of the clan FDSuhDFhSDFI so its scrapped xoxo!)

half-clan relationships! half-clan relationships have much more of a mixed view than from canon. the code does say forbid against romantic relationships between the clans, but a lot of cats are divided on whether that should extend to platonic relationships as well. some more “traditional” cats (graystar, cootwhisker, yellowstar) believe that relationships outside of your clan should strictly be professional - the only friendly interactions should occur at gatherings, and any other time should be polite but terse at best (such as meeting them at the border in a time of peace, arranging a discussion for clan politics, etc.). however there are other characters (such as minkclaw, plumstar, burdockstar) who believe that cross-clan friendships are not only good but should be encouraged for the sake of keeping solid peace and alliances between the clans. There’s also a few that believe cross-clan romantic relationships can be used as an arrangement for alliance and creating a treaty between warring clans (for example: the resulting kits of honeystream and waspfoot - sandwhisker was given to windclan with waspfoot and honey/wasps romance was a peace treaty to create an alliance between graystar and plumstar and sandwhisker was betrothed to graystars daughter morningclaw!)

outer-clan treatment! clan cats do not look down on rogues/loners/kittypets as they do in canon. a warrior may be cocky if they were to take on a kittypet in a fight because warriors have actual battle training while a kittypet is relying on instinct, but they don’t look down on others for living those types of lives. in the eyes of the clans, outer clan cats arent lesser than or inherently evil, but rather just other cats trying to survive and that they should be treated respectfully unless they are purposely antagonistic. taking in rogues/loners/kittypets is also not viewed as shameful or “lesser” than having a clan of full-blooded warriors: clans tend to want to be as large as possible to a. prove that they’re thriving and healthy and also b. more cats means more help around the camp and territory itself! winter and fall also proves to be a time where there’s “kitten booms” because rogues and loners will drop off their kits to the clans to ensure their safety (it’s easier for a group of 10 - 15 adults to care for three kittens rather than one adult after all), and youngsters who have recently separated from their families to find their own lives tend to settle down in clans

brand new rank! i’ve been working with the idea of caretakers for years, actually, and the first time I ever publicized + used it for something related to warriors was my deviantart rp group! i’m really excited to be using it for the comic, and i tend to keep the rank established through all my wc verses! caretakers take care of the kittens within the clan; they raise, nurture, protect and entertain kittens of the nursery so that once their dams are finished nursing they can return to their warrior duties - likewise if a leader, deputy, or seer were to have kits, all they would need to do would be to nurse their kits and then once that’s done they’re back to their duties. caretakers also nurture and care for rogue/loner/kittypet kittens that are brought to the clans but don’t have their parents around anymore. caretaker training consists of battle training and history/lore/mythology keeping! like seers, caretakers do learn how to hunt, but they get their hunting tips and critiques from their peers rather than their mentors, as their mentors focus on perfecting their defense/offense skills and passing on history and lore (just like how a seer’s mentor focuses on teaching them herbs and how to interpreting signs or prophecies from starclan).

It's been awhile?

Yeah...it's been awhile, but thats okay because I'm about to catch everyone up to speed right now. 

I'm back in Rouen. I'm back to teaching. I'm back to living life, but it's a little different this time around.  My living situation is different, my school is different, my friends are different and blah blah blah. 

This year, instead of working in Les Andelys I'm working in the city center of Rouen at Lycée Pierre Corneille.  This is a HUGE difference to me- as this year my students are super serious, super motivated, and have a super high level of English already.  Instead of working on things like "I am _____ years old" and "My name is_____", I get to talk about things like culture, literature, philosophy, and the nature of progress.  

This year I am working primarily with sophomores and juniors in the classroom and having separate conversation/discussion classes with my seniors. The last two years of French high school revolves around the idea of four "notions", which are: the idea of progress, forms of power, myths and heroes, and places and exchanges.  With these four notions- it's been really fun to be able to discuss things happening culturally, politically, and socially in the world with my older students and be able to introduce these kind of thought provoking questions in my younger ones.  Teaching is a gift, I learn a lot more from students than they probably will ever learn from me. 

Throughout the process of teaching, working, trying to make new friends and meet people- I've also been applying to graduate school.  Trying to find good writing samples and write a decent research proposal/statement of purpose is really really really hard.  All the personal statements and statements of purpose revolve around the question of "why this school? and what can you offer us" and "tell us your primary field of research study and why this is valuable and innovative to the body of research that already exists".  My answer to the first question is: well, um- youre one of the best schools in this field and I would really like to benefit from that name on the ole diploma.  As far as personal statements go- I'll keep it short and sweet with "help me im poor".  So far the top programs in my application list are "Mind, Language, and Embodied Cognition" at the University of Edinburgh and the PhD of Modern Language at good ole UTK.  The Edinburgh program is a perfect fit for me- combining philosophy of language, linguistics, and identity science all into one.  It's a literal dream come true and if I could have created a program from scratch for me- that would be it.  The UTK program is a close second because it allows me to study both German and French along with philosophy and linguistics- all the things that I love. 

Unfortunately- most of my best writing samples and work are located on my old laptop at home!!! So- stay tuned to see how I manage to work that one out.  

Since I've been back in France- I took a little vacation to Rennes and St. Malo and both were absolutely relaxing, fun, and full of joy.  It felt good to be back in my apartment and sharing space with such a familiar city once more.  I'm settling in- I am loved to the brim by the people around me here, and although I of course miss the ones I left behind- it feels good to be back.

Grasshoppers on the High Tower

The View still looks nice, looking at the skyline every morning keeps my head and heart in the right place. It keeps me going knowing I have higher to go and stuff below to fight for. But how did you get up here friends, it makes no sense how you are here too? I barely see you on the ground. You're no where near the grass small young Grasshoppers. What strange creatures. These insects of the trees and now all of the sudden he is up here with me viewing the world far from his tree. Its weird, I honestly dont like bugs up here with me, it ruins the view and it creeps me out a little bit. Bugs are ugly and weird, but maybe thats just me as a human just not understanding their purpose or it could be my hatred for roaches that has me like this. These guys arent as ugly as roaches though and they arent as cute as lady bugs, I guess I can just let them slide though. I mean they are just chilling. Enjoying the view crawling a little higher, not phased by anything really going on in the world just living life and going higher one step at a time. Their chirps arent like the birds but they sing a song that can make the dawn of day look so beautiful from up here. Im curious though, why are they up here? What would cause them to do this? I did research and research and came to no real resolution for the problem at hand. For awhile I had continued to see them up there more and more, day after day and night after night. I even looked deep into myths in order to find the answer but still nothing and still they chirpped their song to sing during the dawn. One day it was me and just one of the Grasshoppers on a cloudy morning. I couldnt see every building because the clouds were all around us. The Grasshopper chirps and I look at it. Its unphased by my glare as it always has been. I could kill the son of a bitch, then its friends would be phased everytime they climb this high. I decided not to just because I grew to like the little guy, hes lucky I didnt kill him. I then saw my favorite tower in the city. The Grasshopper beings to chirp and the other Grasshoppers around the building do too in unison for one song. A beautiful moment, I'm lucky I didnt kill him, met with a realization. I sat there and thought in the same way I could kill the grasshopper, the grasshopper could kill me too. From this height, we are both equal. We are both lucky to survive up here. Why we both were up here? Why should it matter we're alive to respect and teach each other new things. He taught me his song and I taught him humanity still sees Nature as something beautiful that shouldnt be interrupted or questioned. He sang his song, I lived my life. We taught each other something. We both learned what we really are just students to the world around us. We are all just climbing to understand the higher concepts of all this. And we are teaching each other with each step. We are both Grasshoppers to the world. Just Grasshoppers on the High Tower.
