oh dear lord it's been another year. 2024! can you believe it! i don't talk much on this blog because i have a tendency to talk too much, but it's my little new year's treat, so here we go.

RECAP

i started taking drawing "seriously" in December of 2020, starting to do studies and stuff, and each year since i've ramped it up more and more. this year, i did. a lot of studies. there's probably like at least 200 more in my folder now (not including the 300 days worth of gesture drawings i did), with things like painting, faces, feet, poses, etc. anything i was struggling with, i went right into studying it. my art has been mediocre for a pretty long time now, and it's only the past few months where i feel i'm starting to get the hang of it, which is exciting!

more importantly, i started posting a lot more on this blog. i really like documenting my progress, looking on where i was before and seeing how i've improved. everytime i draw some fanart, im like, oooghh i can't wait to show my (: followers (: !! lots of locked tomb art of course. i've been trying to nail the energy of the different characters, which is why i enjoy books so much, because you get a lot of creative control. drawing ianthe is my fav of course, cause she's my lil nasty, but also i enjoyed doing designs for characters i hadnt thought about before, like judith.

in addition to the locked tomb, we had some new fandoms that got brief moments in between iantheposting: Fear and Hunger, Postal, Faith The Unholy Trinity, and a couple of old ones too, like We Have Always Lived In The Castle and The Merciless.

i posted about 115 times this year, although most of those are shitposts LOL i love posting stuff on my blog and showing people my stuff <3

THE FUTURE

my plans? do more ianthe art, of course. ill be working on more studies, probably going to work on developing a style, and figuring out how to paint. i'd like to do more actually finished pieces, but let's be honest, it'll still be mostly shitpost doodles. i'd like to do more weird stuff. i've been messing around with some gore and NSFW near the end of the year, and it's fun to draw for me. i like idk art that evokes some type of emotion, especially discomfort, and so i find that type of art fun to do, so if you don't enjoy what i've done thus far in that direction, perhaps this isn't the blog for you. i really like horror media, and so i want to do some stuff like that too.

for specifics, i like western type art, a comic book-esque style i'd like to aim for. but i'd like it to be a little more. weird with it. i find comic books often draw all the characters the same, and make all the characters traditionally attractive, and that's boring to me so i'll have to work on finding a way to keep things weird, while also appealing in a graphic sense. the worst thing my art could be is bland and forgettable.

locked tomb wise... more tridentarii art. need to be really weird with it. i have lots of wips planned, like i have a whole page worth of just thumbnails, so i wanna get some of those done. also i had a few animatics i wanted to do. mostly stupid shit, once i learn how to do animatics, then we'll do actual serious ones. id also like to do more comics. i have some comics storyboarded out with my girlies, i like telling a story so, need practice on that. id also like to develop a way to consistently draw them, for convenience sakes, so i'm not fighting for my life every single time i draw these characters. oh and i wanna do some outfit stuff. i draw them in like. generic clothes everytime but i'd like to come up with a few actual outfit designs, that i can just reference back to. and, of course, more shitposts. lots of stupid shit in 2024 for sure. there was something else i wanted to say here but i can't remember.

oki enough rambling, here's some IMAGES for yall to look at i know everyone loves to look at images.

began this year by warming up with gesture sketches (almost) every day. i started with 20 poses (30 seconds each), and then in november i was like. ugh my hands suck i need to get better at hands, so i switched to doing 10 hand sketches (60 seconds each). i want my art to be very energetic so it's important that i do these !!

anatomy studies of extremities because i'm flopping at those -_- ive gotten better with hands but they're still a struggle. i hate feet tho still

need to get my painting game up. i joined an art forum to get advice, and the biggest suggestion i got was working on my values, so i did various value studies. also lots of faces because my faces flop !!

random doodles to work on drawing from imagination. on my "sketchbook" pages, as i like to call them, i'm usually pretty loose and messy, since the point is just to be drawing so often these will suck, but that's fine. i don't think very much when i draw faces on here either so they end up being in my Instinctive Style i suppose you could say

ianthe wip. i was planning to do a few drawings based on the idea of her having Missing Arm nightmares, but the lineart was intimidating to me so i haven't worked on this one more yet /: also there was going to be a toontown gay homosexual toxic yuri comic that i was gonna put here with it but the page is way too long so umm guess that'll have to wait.

this is a remake of something i made 5 years ago and it was the last drawing i made with a tablet. i just got a NEW drawing tablet FINALLY and this is the first thing i finished with it . we have come full circle! old one + rambles under the cut

while i made this old one, the nib on my drawing pen was broken and it was extremely difficult to make LMF so i resorted to using a mouse. eventually my old computer stopped working and i got a laptop around 2 years ago, which is when i started using a TRACKPAD.

now i finally stopped procrastinating and got a drawing tablet. its a lot to get used to; it actually dawned on me that I dont have a proper setup for it. only thing i can do is borrow my parents desk when its available bc i dont have my own computer desk. normally when i draw with a trackpad i just kinda lay in bed, but thats rlly not easy with a tablet

ANYWAY mabel has changed a LOT since this drawing. i still think shes a little boring considering all the fun things you can do with scenecore fashion, but shes not a main priority when it comes to my OCs bc shes a character from Focus, and thats not a project im working on currently. u still might see me draw the characters tho

i am so close to finishing my replay of ff7r ive got like maybe 4-6 hours left then i can FINALLY play intermission dlc so that i can FINALLY play rebirth and then FINALLY the mental crop rotation can go back to art or writing (altho i cant promise the art wont be ff7 focused for a while longer, cloud and associates got me gripped real tight rn)

(this got really long so im putting the rest under a readmore so it doesnt make anybodys dash like 5 miles long)

id really like to keep streaming when im done playing ff7 stuff, like art streams are smth id really like to do but im sort of at a loss for what to do setup-wise. i dont have the means or desire to put together a way to stream traditional art so it would have to be digital.

i detach my screen from my keyboard to draw on the touch screen which disconnects the screen from the graphics card i think. or SOMETHING like that . the graphics card I stream with is in the base of the laptop and obs does NOT play nice with the secondary one on the monitor. which means i cant stream with the screen detached.

ive tried streaming with my computer in Drawing Mode which essentially is with the screen on backwards so that its angled toward me with the keyboard inaccessible. it's annoying to stream like that tho because i can then ONLY use the touch screen and cant type anything or use keyboard shortcuts. its manageable if im not streaming but really annoying when im streaming and have to hop between drawing program and messing around w/ obs

i have a little bluetooth keyboard that i could use to get around this but its pretty tiny and while it DOES work the problem is that im not used to how the keys are spaced and i fumble constantly. also theres a delay in the input sometimes (i bought this keyboard from the secondhand store for like 4 dollars so it came with a little wear-and-tear)

and then trying to draw with the screen on normally obvious works the best streaming-wise but the angle that the screen is at with the keyboard in the way has my wrist hurting in like. 45 minutes.

i dont really want to use my external tablets - they're pretty old at this point and ive gotten used to drawing directly on the screen , and i have no desire to get a tablet with its own screen. i imagine cintiq and cintiq-equivalent tablets are still pretty pricey, and even if i had the budget, the entire point of me getting a touch screen computer was to be able to draw on it directly and cut down the number of steps it takes to get started, to keep the adhd demons at bay.

i think the solution is probably just adapting to the tiny bluetooth keyboard . i've messed around with using switch joycons for my keyboard shortcuts and while it actually worked really well it still doesnt fix the problem of shit keyboard access if i need to google a reference pic or smth lmao. touch screen keyboards just dont do it for me i always feel clumsy when im not able to actually feel separate keys. it frankly feels even worse than my tiny bluetooth keyboard

actually one of the main hurdles for me wrt drawing digitally is that i havent figured out a screen configuration that makes pulling up reference pictures feel seamless. its very jarring and clunky to have to tab between screens and i know theres a little window you can plop ref images into in clip itself but i Still find it pretty awkward to use. i think my screen size might be the issue though, so id probably want to use my tv as a second monitor and throw the ref images up there. which DOES work , ive tried it, but the problem is that . well. it's a touchscreen computer. and the bluetooth keyboard doesnt have a trackpad, because why would you need one for a touch screen. except that. the second monitor isn't a touch screen. its my entire goddamn television. i cannot access it via touchscreen. so i have to then plug in a mouse. and then at that point i am juggling the bluetooth keyboard, the joycons for faster keyboard shortcuts, AND a mouse to access the external monitor.

that setup is honestly doable i just feel so clumsy trying to navigate it. im sure with time id acclimate to it and it would become more streamlined as i make adjustments. im getting ahead of myself tho hahah im still at least five hours out from finishing my replay of remake, and then i hear the dlc is like ~4 hours so youd probably have to make that at least 6 for me because i play video games really slowly. and then rebirth is like what. 40 hours for just story?? jesus christ i just checked howlongtobeat and its over 80 hours with sidequests. thats like double the length of remake . GOD im so excited to play it aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

HEY-HO update numero dos bc it's been a while :] STILL no new tablet , unfortunately :pensive: BUUUUUT i picked up drawing in firealpaca :D !! fully shaded and edited pieces take a bit longer to finish though as im using a trackpad, but ehhh it's no biggie XP im just glad to be decently on my feet again <:] (( im writing this from my laptop obviously btw !! )) im currently still Trying (and Failing) to do GED Prep for now, but hopefully SOMETIME this year i'll finally be able to start up comms considering that drawing on a laptop with extra access to resources that are limited when you're on an iPad is actually pretty neat :P

Ive had a few ppl ask about like how i make digital stuff again so uh

I draw with my laptops trackpad along with a rinky dink usb mouse once in a while, yes drawing with my trackpad hurts my wrist as much as you think it does you get over it after a while and learn how to stretch.

I work in krita 4.3.0 primarily which is a free drawing program, i also occasionally do stuff in ms paint, paint 3d, kid pix 4 deluxe, cosmic blobs, and mario paint depending on what look im going for.

If you want to try kid pix, cosmic blobs, or mario paint but cant find a way how to just ask and i will link where i got it from i dont mind.

I do my blocky line art with the polyline tool set to fill and pixel art brush set to 1px, using the polygon tool with these settings does the exact same thing and idk what the difference is honestly, you just make your line with the tool and then add a point below the end of the line for how thick you want it then follow the line back to the start and reconnect it to finish the shape, you could also just block it in with the tool then use it to erase chunks out to do your lines i do it this way for small stuff a lot.

Other brushes i use are the presets Sketching-1 chrome thin set to 40px (its one of those thin webby brushes and for non pure black adds a bunch of random colors to the line) and Sketching-3 leaky (gets a lil webby when you make curves n simulates line weight that you cant do with a mouse).

I color by blocking in with the pixel art brush and horribly over using the gradient tool.

I walked out of class slightly caught off guard. How was I supposed to capture more than 25 pictures of one object, and write an essay on top of that all in two weeks? This assignment seems nearly impossible and I’m at a loss of where to even begin.

“Dude, have you figured out what you’re going to do your project on?” Daniel asked as he slapped my shoulder,

“I think I might take pictures of my dog, isn’t that a good idea?”

“Yeah, sure dude,” I shrugged as my thoughts continued to wander.

I take pictures of things all the time, how hard can it be.

It’s been a week Corbyn. C’mon, think. You only have seven days left to find the capture the most beautiful thing and write an essay. It can’t be that hard, just think.

“Hey Cor,” Y/N shouted from upstairs, “have you seen the carpet cleaner? I accidentally spilled my drink on my rug and I need it!” A smile immediately overtook my face. No matter what she said, I always managed a smile. There was something about her, something so adorable that made my heart skip a beat.

“Cor?” I could hear her shout again. I rapidly shook my head to get myself out of a daze,

“Sorry, I’m a little distracted. It’s under my bathroom sink!” I diverted my attention back to my laptop screen. As I’m scrolling through pictures to draw inspiration for my portfolio, I hear back-to-back thuds pound down the staircase. Suddenly, an arm was wrapped around my shoulder, and I could feel the presence of a face close to mine.

“How come you’re distracted Cor?” Y/N spoke directly into my left ear as she peered over my shoulder to watch my fingers scroll down the trackpad of my laptop.

“I just have the assignment for my photography class, and I--nevermind, it’s dumb. I just have some work I need to get done.”

“Well let me help! You know I always love being your focal point.”

“No, I know, I know. I love that you always are willing to take pictures. This assignment is just different. I requires a lot of thought.”

“Whatever you say Besson, if you change your mind, you know where to find me.” Y/N kissed my cheek as she finished her sentence and skipped back upstairs to clean up her carpet. A smile quickly overtook my face again, and my heart skipped a beat. Y/N and I have never dated before, nor have we ever thought about dating. But my feelings for her have only gotten stronger ever since we decided to move in together for school. She had the prettiest eyes that sparkled in the moonlight, and the softest smile that could light up an entire room. Despite what everyone constantly told me, I just had a gut feeling that she didn’t feel the same, so I never told her how I felt.

Y/N’s words played through my head over and over again, and after another hour of scrolling through Google, I finally decided what my subject was going to be.

“Hey Y/N! Can you come downstairs for a minute?” Those same thuds hit each step in rhythm and soon I was met face to face with Y/N.

“What’s up Cor?”

“Can I take some pictures of you today?”

“Ha! So you do want me to be your focal point!” She nagged as she stuck her tongue out at me.

“Not quite, I just need to test out my new camera before I take pictures for my assignment. You’re just a test dummy.” Her enthusiasm quickly turned to sadness as I broke the news to her.

“You’ve never asked if you could take pictures of me before, you’ve always just done it. Why are you suddenly asking me?”

I grabbed her hand and began dragging her off to my first location,

“No questions, just follow my lead.”

For hours I captured Y/N in her natural habitats. Playing guitar, dancing, enjoying nature. Typically we enjoyed doing all of these things together, but this time I watched as she just let herself go. Each movement called for a new picture to be taken, and each action made me fall more in love with her. My smile never left my face as I captured her in her elements.

“Cor, it’s been like four hours, are we done yet?”

“Almost, I need one more shot. Come here.” Rolling her eyes, she skipped over to me in a childlike manner like she typically did.

Without looking at her, I flipped the camera around to take a selfie,

“Kiss me on the cheek.”

“This is a weird demand, you’ve never asked me to do that before. Why?”

“Remember, I said no questions. Just follow my lead.” And with that, she complied and placed her lips on my cheek. The same giddy smile that comes from when she speaks reappeared. A few flashes later, I completed my shoot.

“Y/N, Y/N! Come here, guess what!” I screamed as I stepped through the front door of our shared apartment.

“Yes, Cor?” She questioned as she trekked down the stairs.

“I got an A on my photography final project! Aren’t you proud of me!” I shouted in excitement.

“Of course Cor,” she smiled as she extended her arm to go in for our secret handshake.

“What’d you end up taking pictures of?”

“Here,” I smiled as I handed over the portfolio. I watched Y/N slowly begin to open up the folder, and I could feel the beat of my heart begin to speed up. This was it, this was the moment where things could change forever. After briefly closing my eyes and taking a deep breath, I watched Y/N’s eyes dart across the page, a single tear beginning to roll down her cheek,

“The most beautiful thing that I, Corbyn Besson, have found is the love of my life, Y/F/N Y/L/N.”
