and then its like. waking up in his own grave. digging himself out. pulling up the sleeve on his right arm to see a bright red handprint BRANDED on his skin. linking up with alex who is maybe making inadvisable choices in marc's absence (going insane, drinking demon blood and training to kill the demon that killed marc etc). going to a psychic and vale accidently burning out her EYEBALLS. summoning vale to a barn in the middle of nowhere and vale walks in like a spritely little y2k eurotrash ASSHOLE with sideburns and sparks flying and the windows rattle and he looks at marc and tilts his head and smiles.... and marc asks who are you. and vale hits him with the "im the one who gripped you tight and raised you from perdition" and then marc STABS HIM…

heyyy i see people offering you etoiles thoughts and unfortunately i don't have any that others haven't already said but i DO have Phil thoughts that i think you might appreciate ;3;

today i am thinking about how easily phil suffocates when there's nothing to do. it's not that he thrives under pressure, exactly, he definitely suffers when he's too stressed or chronically in danger, but he's built to Do something. he finds a problem and he observes and he tries to solve it: searching for Federation bases and the end of the train tracks, building Uppies in case his eggs need to hide, throwing himself into purgatory strategies. (in hc!Phil who's not constantly in danger we see him pushing himself with new and ever-growing projects mhm?)

and then when he can't do anything to Solve the problem he still has to Do something yknow? I don't think he ever expected results from lavacasting Fed headquarters, but he couldn't just sit there. He checked the anomalies for messages from his eggs obsessively even though it didn't get him anywhere any faster. He does dungeons with Etoiles to distract himself while the eggs are gone.

I think that's why the birdhouse/early EK stuff got to him so badly--he couldn't do Anything, he was only the object of other entities' actions. He starts to doubt his own convictions and agency after the birdhouse and he's a shell of himself.

anyway i'm also thinking about this because i think it's why i've found that Phil absolutely does not thrive when i put him in a modern AU. he is Not designed to have problems in a society where he has so little ability to control his environment. he has to be able to become a supervillain about it or have the weirdest hobbies imaginable otherwise he somehow gets even more anxious/depressed/neurotic than on regular QSMP. i put him in the suburbs and he starts chewing his own leg off like a fox in a trap.

sasha james. god how i love you. she worked in artifact storage (as opposed to jon and tim in research, and martin in the library). or. artefact. think thats how all the official stuff spells it bc british. this is where the big spooky shit of the institute is. you cant work in artefact storage without at least on some level Knowing that the supernatural is real. shes described as being tall, with long hair and glasses (thats important). she was originally the one gertrude had planned to be the archivist after she died. but, elias chose jon. sasha and tim had talked about it, said it was obviously sexism (well. mostly tim saying its sexism) because sasha is so much more qualified to be the archivist. and she would be, if being qualified for the job on paper was what elias was looking for. but elias didnt want a good archivist, he wanted a good archive. someone he could manipulate into becoming an avatar of the eye and being marked by all 14 fears. but neither of them knew that at the time. on the same tape (in the same conversation), tim joked about jon's skepticism, saying that he'd deny sasha ever existed. and sasha. poor doomed sasha.

at the end of season 1, the institute is attacked by jane prentiss. worm wife. im sure youre at least familiar. well, sasha, jon, and martin are all in the airtight room martin has been staying in (after. worm attack left him stuck in his flat for 2 weeks without power or any kind of way to communicate). tim had been out when the worms first attacked, and so is unaware as hes walking into the archives. sasha rushes out to save him. sasha makes her way up to elias to tell him about it, to tell him to try to do something. he says to set off the fire extinguishers manually, as the co2 kills the worms. she did. sasha. at that point. retreated back to artefact storage. theres someone else there. not someone. not someone yet. its something. its been attached to that table for so long, but now that sasha is near... it can attach itself to her. kill her, take her identity and her place. but it doesnt take her face. this sasha looks completely different. of course it does. its Not Sasha. but everyone thinks its sasha. she isnt tall. she doesnt have long hair. she doesnt have glasses. but to everyone, she is sasha james. well. everyone but melanie.

im not gonna say cahsr has been without... many many problems... but that article makes no sense. a route that only connected the bay and la and not the cities of the central valley might be cheaper in some sense, but it also is far less useful. like this isnt some side concern inserted into the project, connecting valley cities to the two coastal metros is also a significant part of the *point* of having a hsr. those are not insignificant cities, and hsr systems in europe generally make a point of connecting many smaller cities between the major metros, so its in line with how existing hsr systems work. as for palmdale ive heard conflicting stuff that palmdale is cheaper and faster to build from an engineering standpoint as well, so idk with that one. also palmdale has a rail connection to la, so if hsr gets there before the tunnels are built it will allow rail trips to la from hsr, and i suppose a possible connection to vegas is also relevant. theres prob more to point out as well but thats what stands out to me rn.

Yeah I don't disagree with a bunch of this, in fact my follow-up to the post adding more context digs into it; not that I expected you to see it or anything, it didn't go viral like that first post. The NYT piece has a perspective that it is pushing that is far from the whole.

Still I will defend it, its not as bad as this makes it out. "High Speed Rail" has the point of being, well, high speed. Its *not* a typical train line, meant to connect everyone to everywhere if they absolutely gotta go. Every stop you add to a train line increases trip duration; its even worse than normal with high speed rail, as you are travelling at higher speeds and so need more time to decelerate and accelerate. If you add enough stops to HSR it simply ceases to be that. You absolutely must cut out some viable stops to preserve travel times, its impossible otherwise.

Additionally, HSR between San Francisco and LA is not local travel, and has a goal of reducing emissions amoung other things - which means it wants to reduce airline flights. If its not in reach of flight times, people will just fly instead, and the line will fail.

Add on top, population density isn't travel. Los Angeles & San Francisco are travel hubs in a way Fresno just isn't - per capita they get visitors in numbers leagues above the inland strip. And it isn't just tourism, its business & events too. Quick speed between the two hubs of industry of the state has economic benefits beyond simple ridership numbers.

And speaking of wider benefits, its not just about where people live, its about where people should live. Way less people should live in Fresno, endless suburbia sucks. LA & San Francisco fucked over their urban planning, but you fix that with, amoung other things, infrastructure. HSR is a small but real way to promote dense, urban development and reduce the size of car sprawl, you want to overpriviledge the real cities in the state.

And as a final note, California's coast has people too, the original proposal would have had some stops:

Its not crazy to say "this line serves some-but-less towns but has better construction costs and travel times". In particular, given the US tendency to literally fail to build anything ever and break along every conceivable metric, it makes sense to privilege cost reduction over literally anything else. California got nothing over this whole ordeal, what's optimal may not matter.

So I do think some of the pushback the NYT article got is overblown, HSR is about tradeoffs. I still agree with the core objection though, that America's doomed infrastructure projects have less to do with 'route choice' and everything to do with our complete inability to build anything in budget, govern any project, or overcome veto points strewn like candy in the system.

im gonna keep it real im getting tired of how often we get told how handsome hua cheng is. i know its all xie lian’s pov and while im not terribly familiar with it i know what genre we’re working with and im assuming thats pretty typical. its something i dont much care for in general and idk maybe it sounds better in the original but ngl its starting to make me roll my eyes. love you goth king but god okay we get it.

i guess what i will say about hualian so far is that overall i like them and i like how they interact in general they have a lot of nice moments and they just genuinely seem to like each other which is really nice to see EXCEPT for when it actually comes to things that could be romantic or sexual which is a shame bc i dont think it has to be like this. again disclaimer that im only reading a translation and dont know everything might not have all the knowledge necessary to accurately criticize etc etc and im assuming a lot of this is expected from the genre (disclaimer to this disclaimer that i cant say that for sure its just based on things ive picked up about the bl genre over the years) but idk like xie lian was so distressed after their underwater kiss scene. it was kind of uncomfortable to read and maybe im being unfair i know his cultivation is based around abstinence or whatever but idk i dont care for it. and that scene alone doesnt have to be a bad thing like idk i guess its his first kiss ever (?) and it would make sense if he feels weird about it but i just have my doubts thats going to be addressed or resolved in a satisfying way. also im like. dude everyone is like centuries old. xie lian’s been on earth for 800 years. has he really never met or heard of a gay person during all this time? maybe he hasnt idk what he got up to yet maybe that’s actually a thing. also same thing with the reactions from the immortals to xie lian in a dress and characters like the windmaster like again you’re all centuries old and its not uncommon to be able to just completely change gender presentation. why are you all weird about a man wearing a woman’s dress? i just feel like that shouldnt be a big deal to these characters idk

also again not going to lie part of this that im not really a big fan of reading romance in general. yes i am reading this book. yes i do read and write a lot of fanfic that includes or centers romance. im multifaceted. but really what im talking about is the like physical side of it and descriptions im extremely picky about it. ill give an example. early on in the torture pit (or whatever it was called i cant remember lol) when xie lian kind of accidentally felt up hua cheng in the dark when he was being carried. i dont think thats a bad thing to have happen between the two romantic leads i think thats fine and good to include that early but i just did not enjoy reading it when it happened idk maybe it was the wording and i do think that moments like these work better in a visual medium. ive definitely read het romance that reads like this and i wasnt a fan of that either lol same with fanfic i get tired when writers go on and on about how hot one characters finds another character. this isnt a huge criticism of it like i said im picky but again like with the way that hua cheng is described it just makes me roll my eyes sorry kings

okay back to the reading. this whole saving the fishermen thing feels like a big set up for something narrative-wise. hua cheng specifically insisted on coming and i know one of the characters involved ends up dying im wondering if thats now it would be a good time tbh if things get just a bit too unfortunate during this heavenly calamity... and the brothers are notably not having a harmonious time... also tho it feels very likely we’ll just have another Hualian Moment (tm)

It just feels right. we’ve seen it both dormant (the leaked footage) and active (the 3rd trailer) so I imagine opening the Vault would cause it to activate. when u try to break the purple rocks on Promethea, iirc the player character can say something to the effect of “have to come back here later”, so it’s possible later in the story we get something (the glowing red/orange/yellow) energy sword to break the purple rocks (eridium???). and yes you KNOW i pointed out the colors because Atlas.

After meleeing it, Moze says “let’s open you up” so im wondering if maybe those stone tablets come into play later? the (eridium?) crystals explode into sparkly purple powder

It’s weird, I feel like these are eridian ruins/tablets growing eridium or some shit. we’ve seen the ruins have lines of color across them before, but never strictly on one side. and also never saw them grow eridium. i wonder if that is a reaction to us opening the second vault on pandora? eridium grew on pandora from the 1st one, now it’s spreading because of the second? I deffo think Eridium is from the second dimension (it started growing on pandora after the opening of the Vault) and it’s our key to getting there.

i believe this is our first look at an ‘artifact’ which are replacing relics from bl2 and oz kits from tps. and like the interviews said, they’ll be effecting movement! this one turns your slide damage into cryo damage, lets you deal more radiation damage overall, and allows you to slide faster and further. i wonder how broken this can get on a downwards slope with a super high level slide relic. let’s break the sound barrier!

i really enjoy minecraft but im kinda getting bored? all i ever do is build kinda the same house in creative mode and then wander too far and lose it. any suggestions on how to have more fun or what to do in survival mode? (for reference im playing the switch version)

thats tough! I get how you feel tho, I’ve always gone through cycles of playing minecraft off and on. I do have a couple bits of advice?

for creative, if ur always building the same house try finding real life architecture you like make something inspired by it! Or make a build in each biome! I will also play a bit in survival w a “survival base” (read: ugly) and then go into creative and fancy house that encapsulates what i’m focusing on in that world

I also suggest trying out redstone! I never used to mess with it and I still dont really understand it, but completing a build is really satisfying. Just have a survival world that’s focused on different kinds of farms and automation.

Do anything you haven’t really done in survival, focus on enchanting or dungeoneering or villager trading. Make a network of nether tunnels! just dig a big quarry! Anything!

My biggest, and probably least accessible suggestion is find a nice server to play on. I’m doing lots of stuff rn I wouldn’t have if I wasn’t playing with other people ^^

Theres also no shame in taking a break, I go off and on playing minecraft constantly it’ll always be there for you when you want to come back 🌼
