People talk a lot about the sanderlanches and like yes they are the cool parts of the books where the most Stuff happens i gotta say i think people are focusing on it a bit too hard. IMO the thing that makes the ending of a cosmere book work for me is those moments when the characters find out more about the world than they know what to do with. Like kaladin and wit on the plains or when a mistborn character finds a new metal. The boundaries of the story the characters are in shifts ever so slightly and the characters are forced to adjust their worldview to accommodate it, even if they can’t understand it. If it isnt for those moments, where the rules of their setting feel like they stop applying, and they realize they’ve been understanding their own rules wrong, then every sanderlanch plot twist would start to feel like a first time dm trying way too hard to make his dnd game cool.

I dont really care too much abt the wider cosmere lore dumps, but seeing his characters gain knowledge of the world and use it just in time to survive whatever they’re facing will always be thrilling and it gives me the greatest sense of what the cosmere Means as a massive written work. It’s about not knowing, and the human desire to categorize everything we dont know, even when our categorizations lead us farther from the truth. The end of a cosmere book frequently leaves us with more questions than answers, because when you learn something that doesn’t fit into your established categorizations of the world, the first thing you do is try to recategorize so that it fits.

I imagine this is a scenario where even the Very End of the series will still leave fans with an incredible amount to theorize over, because the theorizing is as much of the story of the books as the novels are. They’re kinda metatextual in that way. There are some things you just can’t know, no matter how much you theorize and believe in your own conclusions. We generally don’t like to talk about the mormonism here (for good reason), but I think its kinda inextricable from the way these stories are structured. These are all tests of faith. All these characters have to maintain faith in their role in the world against evidence that directly contradicts their motives, and how they move on from that knowledge is the place where faith lives, and is a familiar mindset for the religious.

This area is also where I think sanderson’s stephen king influence becomes the most clear. Sanderson’s prose gets a lot of attention for its general/intentional blandness but again its the way he structures his multiverse that speaks the most to what hes trying to do with the whole project. Like stephen kings characters, his become varying degrees of aware of their place within a story (hoid being the easy example) and i think, like with stephen king, sanderson puts much more of himself into his narratives than people generally realize. The mormonism is just one part of it, but the way his characters react to discovering the wider cosmere feels very reminiscent of those moments in king novels where his characters discover that they are characters in a novel, except sandersons characters react to their world-shattering revelations by just imagining a world with slightly-adjusted rules. The cores of these books are never actually in The Coolass Sanderlanch, they’re spread out in every moment where a character tries to learn more about the world they’ve found themselves in, only to be left more confused than when they started. Its as much an existential piece for sanderson as it is for the characters. These books are great but i feel like the structure of the novels can kinda obfuscate how you’re meant to derive meaning from your time with them. It’s like the intentionally simple prose, the sanderlanch is a big flashy moment that tries to defuse the part of a readers brain that digs for literary depth, and weirdly enough i think it is way more successful at that than most people give it credit for. These books are so easy to read, so easy to learn and categorize and theorize about but a pain in the ass to truly understand, and i think that’s intentional

SCREW IT IM GONNA TOOT MY OWN HORN FOR A BIT

So it's been like a month since I put up my last big mashup, and the response has been awesome. I wanted to talk about all the little bits I put in there, because frankly, I put a lot of love into it, and I want to share it! Here's the video of the mashup with the music video (which is a big part of it.)

First of all, shoutouts to Shoocharu for the incredible animation for the original MV. I've found him to always have the best Game Grumps animations, and his abilities work perfectly for this music video.

Okay, now just to talk about all the Silly Jokes and Bits and Stuff. A lot of these were noticed by comments (and shoutouts to them! I love seeing people get these)

-Ska Cha Cha is used as a reference to the name of the actual song "Transcendental Cha Cha Cha". Close enough.

-A couple samples are used multiple times at different points in the song. For "Tik Tok", "Ska Cha Cha" and "Down" it makes sense since it's the chorus of the song. However, I also bring back "I'm Blue" and "Toxic" because in the original song, those samples are played over the lyrics "The universe is getting colder, colder. Still every universe somehow got Zumba". Those lyrics are repeated at the end of the song, showing how what was once madness is now being embraced. I thought playing those samples again with the full mix was appropriate.

-And yes, in the two appearances of The Void in the music video, MEGALOVANIA plays because he looks kinda like Sans.

-"words, words, words" was a super interesting inclusion. At first I added it because of the lyric "Just relax..." which is a lyric during that portion of Transcendental Cha Cha Cha. Also, not only did "here's two facts" thematically work well (since the song was about to discuss two separate universes) but it also perfectly aligned rhythmically. Also, that "words, words, words" line might be one of my favorite pre-choruses ever.

-I included Cruel Angel's Thesis at someone else's suggestion, but I'm really glad they suggested it. I actually start it with a somewhat heavy low pass filter before slowly fading off it because I thought it sounded cooler.

-I included "Harder Better Faster Stronger" during that portion because Tom's vocal effects sound similar.

-Cha Cha Slide matches perfectly since the lyrics of Transcendental Cha Cha Cha are also "Slide to the left....slide to the right". Incredibly proud of the little breakdown I included during the mix-up portion.

-"Sometimes this song, it sounds like" segment is referencing myself, since over the years I have developed my own patterns. Sometimes the song does indeed sound like Crawling (plus funny commercial next to it. Again...patterns) and sometimes it does sound like All Star (shoutouts to Star Shop)

-The Mighty B! Theme slaps actually.

-I felt like I had to include the Peanut Butter Jelly snippet, since "it's everything and nothing, it's a baseball bat" sounded almost like it was a direct reference to it. I wanted to include the original Tom Cardy lyric on top of that one both to hammer home the joke and also because I thought the harmonic vocals layered perfectly onto Peanut Butter Jelly Time would make for a nice touch.

-Every time I saw someone notice that I put the "God Dammit" directly after Never Gonna Give You Up to imply that he was mad about getting rick rolled, I gained a year of my life.

-Keeping the "Blink!" from the original song I felt was useful to help kinda punctuate the wildly different samples I was using.

-"Money Game" and "Money Money Money" being played over the French Revolution. Completely unrelated, but have you noticed how much wealth inequality we're facing here in America? That's interesting.

-"Closer" and "Closer" is such an easy joke. In fact it's so easy I've done it before. Did it anyway lmao

-During the big buildup, "Larger Than Life" was used mostly because I hadn't used that song before and I thought it was time. "Dare" was put in because I think that the vocals work really well to naturally create a sense of buildup (unless it's the Live version). "Brain Power" was put in to replicate the noise gate that Tom put on his extended note.

-Monkey Watch and Mr Brightside. Again! Patterns!

So yeah that's Transcendental Fever Dream. I'm sure if I had more time and excuses to talk about all the nitty gritty details and choices made I'd do it, but I think this is a pretty big breakdown. Something's always felt kinda Big about this one. I think that save for Super Smashup, this is the best mashup I've ever made, and I think it acts as a sort of a culmination of these last 7 years or so of mashups. No idea what the future holds, but if it comes from love, then it's gonna be great.

ALIEN STAGE CHAR WITH A LITTLE KID SIBLING

im imagining this as you being a child but if you want like a little sibling in the same age range uh I can do that if u ask....

IVAN

I feel like he'd cherish his sibling a lot, especially a younger one.  

He loves caressing your head, playing with your hair, 100% 

Or hold your hand and rub circles on the back of it while looking at you with a smile. 

He is always by their side, no matter what. If you're crying, he's there. If he chooses to run away, he takes you with him.  

The way he comforts you is by pressing your head against his chest and running his fingers through your hair before placing a small kiss on it, whispering quietly to help you release all negative emotion. 

He's a bit of a hypocrite when telling you what to do. He wants to send you on the right path in life because you deserve the best in the world, so of course, he's always giving you advice, caressing your head, and telling you via story books. 

He still manages to rub off on you, if you’re a ray of sunshine you have a serious look on your face and people get scared off and you don't mind much as long as you have your brother. 

You’re unafraid of the big dog like aliens who bare their teeth at people. You brainlessly put your head in its mouth or put your forehead to its nose and close your eyes, feeling a connection to it. 

Every time he finishes a song you run up to him which makes him smile, remembering partly who he is doing this for.  

If he ever had a friend to talk to, he’d always mention you, i mean, you’re all he has. 

And in return he would tell you about the people he knew, when you asked about Till he would tell you, but his head would be in the clouds. 

HYUNA

She doesn't lie to their sibling at all. You will know the situation, and she won't hide anything from you.

You need something? She always has your back. You're spoiled rotten.

She raised you to be tough and headstrong so that you could live your best life when you grow older.

She gets so excited every time she notices you growing older that she shakes or hugs you while jumping and showing you off to everyone. only to her close friends because shes a bit secretive about you.

gets really mad when someone she doesnt like mentions you

Loves to kiss your cheek, mwah mwah mwah! Before biting it playfully.

She wants you to know that you own yourself and don't have to please anyone to be happy! If you do something, it's because you want it!

When she notices that she's rubbing off on you, she squeals and tells her buddies, telling them she's so proud before rubbing your head to mess up your hair because you can't be cooler than her.

She'll hug you whenever you feel down and tell you it's all going to be alright, that no matter what, she was always there, and she'd kick anyone's ass for ya.

she's not a fan of getting all cheesy, so she'll squish your cheeks and tell you to raise your head high.

LUKA

He wants you to be independent so he does the worst thing he could possibly do. ignore you.

He thinks it will make you strong, so you'll be capable of handling things if he ever disappears, but it just makes you wish he'll acknowledge you.

You get everything that you want except your brother's attention.

So you do everything to try to impress him, even starting to practice singing and accomplishing every task given to you.

And when you're standing next to your brother in front of your owner, when the alien leaves, he just rubs your head and walks away with a small smile.

When he notices he's rubbing off on you he either frowns because who do you think you are? or he smirks and doesn't say anything.

He never talks with you, only really short talk

Whenever you show that you feel down, tears in your eyes as you call for your brother, he gets a bit angry. You shouldn't be showing that; you won't survive in this world if you do.

He'll probbaly slap you........

He's not good at caring for you; he doesn't know how much it would affect you.

MIZI

She'll do anything for you. She wants you to smile always.

Everything she does is for you. She always thinks about you every second, wondering when she'll get to see you.

She buys you many gifts, so don't ask her how she got them; she has her ways.

She sings you to sleep, picks flowers for you, and hugs you daily.

If anyone knew her, they know you're her number one priority.

If you ever feel down, she will sing you your favorite song and gently rock you to sleep, trying not to cry, too, because she's supposed to look strong for her sibling.

When you show similar behavior to her, she smiles and gets so happy she'll tell the whole world, similar to hyuna but she brags to everyone.

He tries, he really does but he's a bad influence and tries to distance himself from you so you'll be safe.

But you dont know that nd so you stick to him as much as you can, showing off anything you made or just anything you learned to impress him.

u know fundamentally i do understand when people say “firemen/paramedics/etc are so much more cooler/epic/based than cops.” but at the same time I don’t think you should be viewing the world through this lens, because while they are Good jobs that provide invaluable service to their communities, they are still people with the capability of victimizing the marginalized, even thru unconscious bias. and you probably will find a lot of people within these professions that align themselves with police, too. I personally know a handful. im not saying you should hate firefighters, but I am saying you should not see professions as wholesale “good” or “bad” and let that blind you from wider societal criticism, especially of people who hold the power of life or death.

Peter Lorre (The Maltese Falcon, Arsenic and Old Lace, Casablanca)—to me he DEFINES scrungle hes the first person i think of every time the term comes up! i want to fold him up like a paper accordion and put him in my pocket. guy that spawned a million voice artists and impersonators. they made a ghost version of him for halloween cereal staple boo berry. bewitched by his nervous mania and tooth gap <3 (for the purposes of propaganda im linking a photo from his extremely short appearance in muscle beach party bc ive been obsessed w it for years and i couldnt find any video for it :/ anyway imagine youre frankie avalon spending the whole movie battling a bodybuilder faction thats taking over your beach and your girl and then you find out this fucking guy is their mastermind mystery leader and hes stronger than all the bodybuilders combined. like Huh. What.)

Peter Lorre:

he's pretty much the archetype of the scrungly little guy. the blueprint. the example by which all other scrungly little guys are judged

The entire point of his iconic role in Casablanca (apart from introducing the central plot mcguffin) was to be LITTLE and SCRUNGLY to make Bogie look even cooler. And Maggot in Corpse Bride - the littlest scrungliest guy in that film - was a parody of him.

Between his big eyes, wheezy laugh, short stature, and expressive faces, Peter Lorre achieved icon status as the scrungliest, littlest guy in Hollywood. His scrungly little guy energy was often contrasted with the more typical masculinity of the leading man, but whether this contrast was meant to make him seem especially sinister, comedic, or pathetic, it always left an unforgettable impression!

The perfect sniveling character actor, “scrungly” is the first word that comes to mind when I think of him.

I'm sure somebody else has already submitted him (if not then ???) but he's a cute kind of scrungly little guy. He's got a distinctive nasal voice with an accent that is instantly recognizable and often imitated. His later horror movies are so much fun, especially when he's playing off of Vincent Price. He's so good at being unhinged, creepy, or manic, but also pathetic and sympathetic.

Classic scrungly hollywood golden age little guy who was friends with Humphrey Bogart and still played some of the wettest most sniveling characters ever committed to celluloid (complimentary) there is a deep despair and darkness in many of his characters that enhances his scrungly

To be clear, I am one of those people who will argue that Lorre is one of the most underrated film actors, but the POINT is that he's also just a scrungly delight. A delightfully pocket-sized man. Somehow endearing even when he is being actively amoral (see esp. Casablanca. "I found myself much more reasonable!") The faces he makes while doing the Russian cossack dance with a butter knife between his teeth in Silk Stockings make me laugh just thinking about them.

Wikipedia described his typical characters as "timidly devious", lots of weird little villains and evil sidekicks that are pretty horrifying but still manage to be sort of pathetic and the very definition of "poor little meow meow". His look and voice and mannerisms are so iconic they're still imitated

Cartoons for the next century have and will continue to include Peter Lorre-esque characters when needed to up the scrunge factor (see Bugs Bunny and so many more).

I think Arsenic and Old Lace is his quintessential "scrungly" performance. He's so put-upon and tired...all he wants is sleep and some schnapps! I love the way his shoulders fall slowly when he thinks he's caught (he looks like a sad puppy!), only to gleefully sprint out the door when he realizes how dumb those police officers are.

the problem is that it's so hard to really analyze anything about arcane, and draw any conclusions about the story, because of the way it was written and conceived in the first place.

to the people who're like "yeah season 2 was bad, but season 1 was a MASTERPIECE in story writing and PERFECT in every way", that's just not true. the cracks were already there in season 1. there's multiple things, especially overarching ones, that just don't add up, and several ways that the story progresses that seem like odd choices. the thing was that, to me, the rest of it was all so good... the small details, the contained scenes were so well done, so detailed, so touching, that i really believed that maybe those cracks were just hiccups after all, and it's not a big deal, and maybe they'll even make a lot more sense and all get tied up with a nice little bow in season 2 (ha)

to me, at this point, it seems obvious that the way season 1 came into being was that these three idiots (who should never be allowed to write anything ever again) wrote a script, that was so terrible that riot had to bring in help to fix it for them (cause they were that incapable) and then someone got handed their slop and told "save this as much as you can, but keep the main points the same", and save it THEY DID! but the overarching plot is still the original one. which is why there's this dissonance all across it.

season 1 often seems like it's trying to tell two different stories at once. the example that comes easiest to me is jinx's transformation from powder to jinx post time skip. to the people i know irl who watched it, me included, the difference between these two is jarring, to the point that it just doesn't seem realistic that powder would change that much. this is what most people's reaction to her transformation was. like, sure, she changed... but jinx is almost a completely different person. and we can sit here and analyze all we want, and say yeah, but look, in ep2 min37, powder laughs when an enforcer is hurt, so that shows that she is indeed attracted to violence even at this age, but like... first of all, im at this point fully convinced that these details were put in specifically for that, to attenuate the valley that is between powder's character and jinx's, and I also honestly feel embarrassed that i even have to do all of this at all.

other notable examples are whatever is going on between jinx and silco in their relationship. like, yeah, he was actually a good father to her... but actually, there's something weird going on between them... but actually, no... he was better than vander, but actually he was worse than vander and was actually the cause of everything bad in jinx's life..... and on, and on, because the literal story itself never actually makes up its mind on what it wants the relationship between these two characters to be. same as it never makes up its mind on whether powder was a cute, innocent kid who was just manipulated by silco, or if powder was born like that and was just looking for an opportunity to release her inner jinx. same way as it never makes up its mind on whether vi is a devoted sister, who would do anything to get powder back, as she herself says, or if she actually thinks this new enforcer chick she just met is kinda cooler, as her actual actions would indicate. does silco adopt jinx because he sees himself in her, or does he intend to use her as a weapon and then later on grows to actually care about her? there comes a point where "this is a complex story" just becomes an excuse for "we were actually working with three different ideas at once and we never really decided on which one we were gonna do and we kinda just prayed it would all work out somehow"

the one thing that arcane season 2 has on season 1 is that it doesn't suffer from any of these weird identity issues. it's bad and simplistic but it's bad and simplistic in its entirety and it doesn't ever seem interested in being anything else. the story has no continuity or congruence issues, except of course for the ghost of season 1 that haunts it, and especially haunts the writers, who so far have displayed nothing but dismay for the story that actually made this show so acclaimed, and have done all they could to bury it as much as possible in season 2.

now, personally, im a big death of the author truther. even more so in cases like these, where we're dealing with teams of people. power struggles happen in studios, and in writing rooms, and at every level of production. and these three people that have taken credit don't seem like the most emotionally (or intellectually) mature individuals.

so, to solve all these issues, just know that when im discussing or analyzing arcane, im going off the interpretation of the events that serves the story the most, and that leads to the most meaningful narrative and the one that is most worth telling. all of this weird lee and overton slop that snuck in im gonna be completely ignoring.
