A quick recap on the rest of 2023's played games!

Part 1!

As explained on a post previously, I sadly wont be writting huge reviews for every game left of 2023

I wanna get to writting about 2024 gamessss

I might revisit a few games from this series of posts in a later date for the sake of giving my full thoughts on them.

Alrighty! Lets do this!

54. Trauma Center: Under the Knife

Honestly I sorta played this one because of a mutual I dont speak to too often.

Anyway this was my first foray into Trauma Center so I was a bit exited going into it!

Needless to say it delivered on a fun dramatic time! I am quite surprised by how good this game is honestly.

The best way I can describe it is an arcade style operation simulator with the most dramatic hospital room visual novel you will read on the side.

That sounds fucking ballistic but it works.

You have a story about an epidemic sweeping the nation as a group of medical experts try to handle the disease as best they can, mainly focusing on the rise to fame of Derek Styles as he becomes the doctor of all time

(not the best one or the worst one, hes the doctor of all time. )

but you can suture wounds in an instant, you inject green goop to regain vitals, stop time itself, have to deal with dealing with 5 patients in a row in like 15 minutes and constantly see your patients having bugs in their stomach.

The story is played completely straight while the gameplay is fast paced operations using the DS's touch screen.

I love it so much.

The controls are really well tuned, its fun to get better at the game and the gameplay loop is engaging.

The characters are surprisingly memorable and fun to keep up with, except angie. I hate angie.

I am not forgiving you for being a total ass to derek and also telling a suicidal patient to go kill themselves

Did we forget that? I mean you probably dont know what im talking about to begin with but im not forgetting whatever the fuck that scene was.

Whats wrong with Angie.

I hate that im supposed to like her later on but no. Shes still annoying as the whole game goes on, shes not likeable at all despite the writter's best effords.

... again the rest of the characters are fun. Derek is a sweet guy, Nigel is my favorite asshole in the whole place, Kasal and Hoffman are fun to see every once in a while

Every time those two appear, you know the plot is getting serious Stephen is... kinda there honestly, I barely recall much from him outside of his cool headphones, Leslie is sweet and... I want to hit Tyler with a football (affectionate)

Fun cast, Dramatic but engaging story, fun gameplay that uses the DS's touch screen well and a good OST

Its a fun time! I highly recommend it if you're looking for a good DS game! I enjoyed it alot suturing patients, usin the goop, draining- I didnt go into it alot but the gameplay is REALLY fun. genuinely.

Its fast, its frantic and extremely enjoyable to master

(Small note but I miss the artstyle of this game, the later entries changed artstyle... it looks nice in those games but the art here has some charm despite its issues)

55. Space Channel 5 (PS2, Replay)

Oh Space Channel 5... god I have mixed feelings on this game

Music? fantastic

Visuals? groovy, the retro future look is unmatched.

The gameplay? ... god damm it input detection

This game is so close to being perfect but the speed of the animations makes certain inputs feel incredibly sluggish which is a huge reason why its so hard to recommend for me.

Took me a whole year to get to grips with the game feel of this game... I didnt get it in 2021 and ultimately felt a bit dissapointed after experiencing Part 2.

By 2022 I actually did get used to it and enjoyed it a whole lot!

I absolutely got it, I fell in love with it! The patterns, the story, the characters, THE EXTRA CONTENT WHEN YOU REPLAY CERTAIN LEVELS WITH 100% VIEW RATING!

It was amazing being able to finally see what alot of DC fans saw in the game after a year of struggle... but I coudnt shake off the feeling of how much of a struggle it was to get used to it...

by 2023 I saw someone else try to get into it, only to run into the same problem I had in 2021 which trully cemented how I feel about the game.

I did also replay it that year because why not and yeah! its still great despite the slight background desyncs every now and again and the sluggish animations... but I cant expect everyone to get used to that

Where im going with this is... Its great... but dont expect it to feel right when you get into it. It takes a second to get used to it.

Its not as snappy as part 2 and I dont fault you if bounce off it because of the gamefeel

I cant completely recommend it. Its great! I love it... you might not enjoy it

Its on steam, its a fantastic ride and one of my favorite rhythm games of all time (even if im still a bit mad over the secret notes for full rating)

56. Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded

MY FIRST WAS DDD- I AM PLAYING IN THE WORST ORDER IMAGINABLE

But im still having fun!

I uhh the story in this one isnt as hard to follow as DDD but its still a bit wierd in some areas, doesnt stop it from being fun tho.

Id say the main thing that keeps me going back to this game is how insanely good the combat is. This might be... one of the best combat systems on the DS, im not joking.

Fucking TWEWY levels of fun ass combat on the DS.

Pulling off juggles with the command deck is immaculate.

The stat matrix is fun to mess arround with and alows for a great level of difficulty tuning.

You can make the game a living nightmare for the sake of getting more money and better items.

They made a 3D game work... really well on the DS

I will argue it falls a bit flat on some places considering how most of the game takes place in glitch challenges... but honestly... I love those areas

Its a bit repetitive but the combat carries it HARD.

I wont talk a single thing about the story, its best you see it yourself despite its issues as its still... pretty fun ngl.

People are too meaaan to this game man. Its good!

It gets a big recommendation from me

@prontaentrega ok heres the ideal way to do it if ur me. start reading detective comics rebirth. now theyre going to introduce a kind looking nurse in a sweater named "jean-paul" and you need to assume that hes some kind of french-canadian leslie thomkins type character that was just introduced in something you havent read. later he will pull out a flaming sword and batman will ask him to please not kill any people. youll want to google him at this point. now you know that is or was "azrael" which explains the flaming sword but it does seem like hes kind of over it so ignore it and move on. now take a break from detective comics and start reading urban legends for some reason. azrael story! maybe now you can learn what hes all about. so it seems like hes still a nurse, but maybe now also murdering people. but he seems to have issues about it? also hes catholic, which is fine. you google him again, and learn what knightfall is. you knew what knightfall was but you forgot about it because you didnt care. try to read it. stop reading it. return to detective comics. he starts being azrael again but now hes team batman and not killing people and also besties with luke fox. finish detective comics. you now have a fairly solid grasp on azraels backstory and general deal through context clues and some exposition. finish urban legends. azrael will return in 2022. start reading everything you can find with him. try knightfall again. its not your thing but you know understand that its important so suffer through it. go to the tag to see if anyone feels the same. find a lot of tim drake fans who really hate azrael for being mean to him. close the tag. read justice league odyssey, which you know takes place after detective comics because kate mentions him going to space and he is in space now. overall its fun but the characterization does feel off at some points. its 2022. sword of azrael begins. read this. for a six issue run it will explain a lot of backstory and also not explain quite a lot at the same time but its deeply fun and very good. read azraels story in saved by the belle reve, a book im still not sure of the target audience for or who greenlit it, but whatever. theres some good backstory and interesting characterization but i do feel like as a stand alone some of the grown jean-paul went thru in it doesnt rlly matter becuz it fits no where chronologically. or maybe it does and i havent read it. now check out azrael agent of the bat and batman sword of azrael. finish neither. read batman curse of the white knight. send sean gordon murphy death threats for his characterization of azrael. finish azrael agent of the bat and have mixed but mostly positive feelings on it. reread a few things but in the order they were actually released. finish batman sword of azrael but skip around a bit. oh shit he had a series in 2009 i should read that. false alarm its about a different guy who is also going by azrael. ignore that one. wait for the next sword of azrael issue. google if jean-paul is canonically gay. google if jean-paul is canonically homophobic. you kind of have to assume he is? reread whatever single issues u saved and take screenshots of him to edit hearts and mcr lyrics on to. dont post those. google if jean-pauls whole deal is ever canonically referred to as dissociative identify disorder or if he truly just is using the term system to describe a system but somehow still no one is saying it. realize you forgot to buy sword of azrael issue 3 and thats why issue 4 makes no sense. read issue 3. it makes sense why he was fighting a giant named satan (not the devil a separate guy) now. hope this helps<3

EDIT: upon attempting to remember what issue of detective comics 2016 azrael first appears in, i have discovered that he appears, as azrael, in issue 1 (/#934). i didnt remember this or connect the dots to this being the same "jean-paul" that we later meet. all this to say um. my bad

i actually need to stop offering to make ppl comics reading lists because i read everything out of order in stops and starts and cant tell you where one arcs stops and one begins. the first time azrael appeared in a comic i was reading he was just introduced as jean-paul becuz i was meant to already know who he was and then a couple issues in he casually pulled out a flaming sword and i lost my mind. the first wildstorm comic i read was the authority 2008 and when angie got her nanosuit back i was shocked and also i thought jack was always an old man until the end when he got better. i read david zavimbes batwing run by accident because i thought it was something else and by the time i realized i was eh this is fun ill keep going.

Now, I've realized that all of these songs I thought of would be too hard to squish in a 1-hour real movie special, so I made it 2 hours instead.

Here are my ideas (I will copy and paste these onto a whole new post later)

Group Songs:

The Narrator and every protagonist/heroic character: The narrator at the beginning of the movie would be slaying ✨✨✨💅💅💅 and every friend and family member of becky would be singing along, having their own solo parts, and singing together in the chorus. It's gonna be epic af (and for some reason, with some practice with Violet, Becky suddenly gets a cool singing voice.) [Center: Becky]

The Plain Old Mischief Makers (including Coach, Ms. Question, Learnerer, and Captain Tangent): Their song would have a nice vibe to it. Idk what kinda song they'd sing yet, but something tells me y'all can always hear Whammer over everyone else. Invisi-Bill and Big Left Hand Guy will always be singing together. Rex: Since Rex clearly only got one episode with two parts, im gonna assume he's still new to the job. It's gonna go something like "Wow a new planet omg there's so many new things to learn ^w^" and stuff (it's gonna be one of the cutest things ive ever seen and heard lmaooo)

Victoria: Victoria... oh my goodness gracious, the best girl with the heaviest gifted kid burnout besides wg. I'm hoping so muchhhhh for a vent song, where she starts spitting absolute fire against her *insert choking sounds* parents X_X. Rapping fast af, and with a ton of recorder solos, and with some (slaying 💅💅💅💅✨✨✨💅✨💅✨💅✨💅✨💅) singing. She finna sound like Ariana Grande, and she's most likely gonna hit a high note O_O

WordGirl (of course): Regular song about what she does everyday but she secretly sneak in vents about how freaking tiring it is and how she just wants to spend time with her friends and family. Still manages to be cheery throughout the entire song tho

The Butcher and Chuck: A very chill hip hop type beat. Singing to wg about how they're just being good homies and wanna chill sometimes. Singing about meat and sandwiches (that's another very cute thing i love it so much ✨) So basically "Even tho we wanna defeat you, we also like to chill a lot and we feel happy when we're around you :)", which is really wholesome :>

Mr. Big and Leslie: (ok bigslie shippers get ready for this >w<) They sittin in mr big's office... singing to each other about how much they actually like working with each other and making money by making squishy bunnies 😭😭😭💖✨💖✨💖✨💖✨💖✨💖✨💖✨💖 The instrumental will be a pop-themed kinda thing, of course :3

Eileen and the Energy Monster: Unlike everyone else, their song is only like- 1 minute long. It's kinda short, but it's also rlly cute. They're singing about how they're bestest-westest friends forever and ever!!!

Rhyme and Reason: (the homies FOREVER 😭✨✨✨) Wholesome friendship song with a whole lotta rhyming and some eminem rapping.

Dr. Two-Brains and his henchmen, of course they gotta have a part 😎✨: omg epic final boss battle vibes. Where it's all dramatic with the crime n stuff and the whole "IMA DEFEAT YOU *starts rapping like Eminem*" stuff. Then there's the ✨sudden calm part✨ about how they used to be friends, everybody gangsta... until the beat DROPS and it turns back into a final boss battle theme. I'm thinking about something like the Open Up Your Eyes song from the MLP movie (god DANG that slapped). And you know what else is special? ✨Charlie... does a voice reveal. ^w^✨

Hey WG friends, besides a season 9+ or revival/reboot, in what way, hypothetically, would you like to see more official WordGirl stories? Naturally I’m partial to a Kid Math spinoff, be it in shorts or comics or a full series, but I also think a musical would be really cool

Epic Movie (Re)Watch #138 - Mr. Peabody and Sherman

Spoilers below

Have I seen it before: Yes

Did I like it then: Yes.

Do I remember it: Yes.

Did I see it in theaters: Yes.

Was it a movie I saw since August 22nd, 2009: Yes, #284.

Format: Blu-ray

Shoutout to @im-this-kind-of-girl, who’s blog I found while looking for GIFs to use in this recap and apparently loves this film. If you chose to read this I hope you like it as much as I like your GIFs. You’re tagged about a hundred times in this because I credit each of your GIFs to you.

1) The Dreamworks deal that allows them to make the “Voltron” TV show on Netflix right now also gives them ownership of the Mr. Peabody & Sherman brand. They had licensed the characters to make the film but by the time of release had bought them (and others) outright.

2) If there are any fans of the original “Mr. Peabody and Sherman” cartoons I’m going to let you know now: I never watched those so they bear no weight on my attitudes towards this film.

3) Ty Burrell as Mr. Peabody.

Burrell is honestly the perfect voice for the role. Robert Downey Jr. was attached for a time but I don’t think anyone could have topped Burrell’s work. The best voice over work is marked by forgetting that you’re listening to an actor and just accepting they are the character, and every time I think of the fact that this is Ty Burrell and not just Mr. Peabody I am in awe. He has the most perfect balance of humor, intellect, and heart which makes the character what he is. He comes off as funny and like a genuine dad (even playing the dad jokes/puns straight). Burrell is able to make the character in this film and I am so grateful that he was cast.

4) The prologue for the film works quite well. It sets the fun and whimsical tone as well as a sense of humor. We also get an early sense of Peabody and Sherman as characters. Peabody as narrator is most easily established, but the filmmakers are able to make Sherman feel like a genuine kid. Not an annoying child, not an adult acting like a child, but a real kid. All in the opening minutes too.

5) I find it interesting how the film calls out the story of George Washington cutting down a cherry tree as not being true, but still claims Marie Antoinette said, “Let them eat cake!” when (if I’m not mistaken) the historical accuracy of that is at best questionable.

6) I really like this film’s sense of humor.

Mr. Peabody: “...the people of France were exceedingly poor.”

[Cut to two peasants lying in the streets]

Peasant 1: “Got any bread?”

Peasant 2: “NO! I’m exceedingly poor!”

7) Right before the film’s release, I had heard that it was going to be rated PG-13 but an appeal from the filmmakers made it PG. I was confused by this at first, but after seeing the movie I understand why. Here are a few reasons for my understanding:

Mr. Peabody is almost killed by a guillotine

We see paintings which depict mummification in vivid detail

Sherman fights in the Trojan war; it’s not as watered down as you may expect

Sherman and Peabody both bite people at two different points

I’m not saying it’s enough to warrant the film ACTUALLY being rated PG-13, but I can understand why it may have almost been.

8) The early sewer chase through Paris is a good showcase of the film’s imaginative action which is to come. It is both captivating to the eye but definitely uses the benefits of animation. I don’t know that something like lighting the methane gas in a sewer to be projected to safety would work as well in live action as it does in animation.

9) Penny (the female lead and trio to Peabody’s/Sherman’s adventure) is never really given an explanation as to why she is such a MASSIVE bully. Like, she’s really awful. She mocks Sherman for being smart, calls him a dog, holds him in a chokehold, she’s downright cruel! And while she develops overtime in a way which is organic and believable, her initial characterization is never explained.

Ariel Winter does quite well in the role though.

10) Ugh, this crap.

Principal [to Mr. Peabody]: “Sherman got in a fight today!”

No, he was bullied and had to defend himself AFTER BEING PUT IN A CHOKEHOLD!

Ms. Grunion: “It’s normal for children to tease...”

I know Grunion is an antagonist and this situation is used to set up conflict in the show, but it paints the unfortunately real picture of how there are adults and people in power who normalize bullying. And it needs to stop in the real world.

11) Allison Janney is a treat as Ms. Grunion though. Janney is one of my favorite actresses ever and has shown her skilled voice over chops in projects like Finding Nemo. Ms. Grunion isn’t in the movie much but when she is (very much like Ty Burrell does as Peabody) Janney is stellar in the role.

12) One of the nice thing this film does that I don’t think the television show did (and again, I never watched, so I don’t know for sure) is examine the father/son relationship between Mr. Peabody and Sherman. The flashback scene where Mr. Peabody is making his case for why he should adopt Sherman in front of a judge (how no one wanted him as a child either) is particularly telling of their connection. It is a nice relationship to carry us throughout the film.

13) I always felt like this was as much a nod to The Prince of Egypt as it was to history in Mr. Peabody’s flashbacks.

14) Stephen Colbert and Leslie Mann playing characters who like...almost exactly like Stephen Colbert and Leslie Mann.

15) One of my favorite character actors around is Steve Valentine, most memorable for his leading turn in “I’m in the Band” on Disney XD, his voice over work in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and his performance in Robert Zemeckis’ The Walk. He is in this film as Ay, royal vizier to King Tut.

16) There are so. Many. PUNS!!!!!

Mr. Peabody [after Sherman knocks off a mummy arm]: “That’s disarming.”

I’m just sharing the one because I don’t want to overload you guys but damn there’s a lot!

17) So...why does Sherman like Penny? She has literally done nothing but cruel and condescending to him this entire film. She humiliated him in front of school, she’s shoved him off, pushed him around, called him a liar multiple times, been a total jerk, and he...likes her?

18) It is important to remember that Sherman is smart. Not Mr. Peabody smart, but smart. When in Egypt, he gets like 99% of the booby trapped floor puzzle right when he was only sort of paying attention to Mr. Peabody before. That shows brains.

19) I really like the humor in this film. I know I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again.

Mr. Peabody, Masquerading as Anubis [after Ay says the sun god Ra demand Penny’s marriage to Tut]: “That’s so funny. I was talking to the sun god Ra just the other day...”

20) Stanley Tucci is fun as Da Vinci. Stanley Tucci is one of the most consistently talented actors around. He ALWAYS devotes himself to a role fully and is often times the best parts in a movie. That same passion shows in his voice over work here. I really enjoy it.

21) Have I mentioned how I like the humor of this film before?

22) The way the time stream is animated during the time travel sequences (bet seen when the trio almost is trapped by a black hole) is very well done. It is a fun and interesting way of visually showing the concept of time as the group hurdles through it.

This is just concept art above but the final representation is pretty close to this.

23) The conflict between Peabody and Sherman is at its highest when Sherman exclaims this to his adoptive father:

Sherman: “I said I’m not a dog!”

It shows a real conflict between the two. Peabody has become concerned about being able to raise Sherman right recently, and Sherman has been questioning who he is outside of his relationship with his dad. It will be resolved wonderfully by the film’s end, however.

24) I’m a sucker for Patrick Warburton in anything, but Patrick Warburton in a voice over role is particularly wonderful.

25.1) Honestly the entire Trojan horse scene has some of my favorite jokes in the film. To start with, the fact that they made Odysseus - the great heroic character in the Odyssey - into this little pimple of a guy:

And I know you’re not supposed to judge people by appearances, but in animation characters are designed the way they are for a reason and the reason here is to play against the standard idea of Odysseus.

25.2) Not to mention the fact that Peabody and Penny get into the Trojan horse LITERALLY by using their own Trojan horse.

25.3) And then, my favorite joke of the entire film, comes at the end of this mini monologue:

29) The climax for this film is SO much fun! I just love it to pieces! It is fast paced, has some great humor in bringing all the historical figures to the present, and brings together every character we’ve met so far in a fast paced and wild ride. It is just SO much fun watching literally EVERYONE chase after Mr. Peabody and Sherman.

30) Mel Brooks has probably three lines total as Einstein but it’s totally worth it.

It shows Sherman making peace with who he is and supporting his dad, and convincing everyone else to do the same as they all exclaim, “I’m a dog too!” It’s surprisingly sweet and moving, perhaps one of my favorite parts of the film.

35) This is sweet. A nice emotional conclusion as Mr. Peabody couldn’t say, “I love you,” too Sherman earlier in the film.

Mr. Peabody and Sherman is a wonderful film that unfortunately was not exactly Dreamworks most watched movie at the time of release. It has a unique and fun sense of humor, fun animation, but also an emotional arc and characters you truly get invested in. The voice acting is very on point, and it is just a fun ride. If you’re a fan of animation, Dreamworks, or just moviemaking in general and haven’t seen this film, I highly recommend it.

and then there’s the impassioned rant you never asked for (IM SORRY):

so, lots of folks who love Lost in  Austen argue that it’s just frothy satire, y’know taking an absurd scenario and milking it to death for laughs

but i think one of the hallmarks of good satire is that it shouldn’t take itself seriously. it should poke fun, while also being aware of what it is. leslie nielsen’s airplane! does not pretend to impart any kind of gravitas.

whereas…

Lost in Austen is a weird hybrid. it wants to be alice in wonderland-absurd, but it also wants to say something meaningful about romance and love and like, family. it wants to elicit an emotional reaction from you, even though it spends 90% of its time mugging at the camera. i think it would have been a far better frolic if it had done away with any pretensions of “drama”. 

basically, you’re fucking with canon? that’s swell. own that shit. don’t fuck with canon and then hide behind it and try to say “no,no, this is still a P&P adaptation” because.. EH.

the capital error this parody-satire made was having its main character (a modern-day gal who, through some wonky shenanigans, enters the universe of the book) end up with Darcy.

like genuinely, honest to god, end up with Darcy. Not ironically, not for laughs. Framed as true love. 

and yes, yes, this is basically OC/self-insert 101; ppl do this all the time in fanfiction. so many modern ladies end up on the quest to take the ring to mordor and charm the pants off of either aragorn or legolas and it doesn’t always make sense. but those folks writing those fics are somewhat aware of what they’re doing. it’s a consciously fuelled guilty pleasure.

LiA wants to surpass guilty pleasure, it wants to be smarter than a self-insert narrative, cuz look, satire!

which is another thing. if you’re satirizing austen of all people, you had better rock it. cuz she was a first-class primadonna. LiA has some pretty funny lines, i’ll give it that, but they lose some of their charm due to the context. this is due to direction/acting. like for example, the guy playing wickham is doing his very best to challenge amanda (the MC) to a witty repartee because amanda, who knows his character from the book, appears to loathe him. this should make for a fun dynamic (i mean that’s the whole premise, right? that she knows p&p so there’s dramatic irony whenever she confronts a character), but for soooome reason, the actress playing amanda is not having any of it. by that i mean that she plays this whole thing in a very dour, serious fashion, like she’s a side-character on atonement or something. i mean, george wickham is flirting with and cajoling her and amanda’s predominant response is a schoolmarmish “most unorthodox!”, with the added open mouth for effect. she is so scandalized by him, but not in a fun way. she’s supposed to be playing along with the wacky scenario, but instead she’s jodie foster in panic room.     likewise, they try to add lots of laughs to mr. and mrs. bennet’s fraught marriage/relationship, and it would work if, once again, they didn’t treat it with such self-importance. mr. bennet keeps shouting obscene things at her, while mrs. bennet is ten seconds away from bursting into real, non-caricatural tears, because this has somehow turned into blue valentine. like you’re almost genuinely wondering if the movie forgot what it was. BINGLEY OMGOSH BINGLEY. he ends up in this existential ennui because jane marries mr. collins (long story, trust me). and he becomes sort of a drunk and a general weirdo?? AND THAT’S THE GAG. i mean you’re not totally sure. is it supposed to be funny, odd, endearing?? the movie can’t make up its mind. but yeah, jane/bingley is treated like fucking romeo & juliet in this “adaptation”, they are SO tragic, they were honestly THE couple of the series, which is pretty ironic given that, as far as i know, we don’t even get to read their dialogue in p&p (we literally just read about them talking, but that’s it. like yeah ofc they’re a good match, but come on, this isn’t supposed to be lust, caution.).

and there are many other examples where the tone is all over the fucking place and the comedy is underwhelmed by the directorial choices. 

which brings me to amanda herself. she’s the culprit in many of my complaints. i’m not here to harangue the actress, but she was woefully miscast and given a terrible script to work with. she’s so utterly charmless and so goddamn witless. there is literally a scene of her tearing off pages from p&p while standing in front of pemberley, having a mental breakdown because “darcy is being mean!!!!1″

even a minor austen fan would do better than she does, and she’s supposed to be an obsessed connoisseur. basically she’s a caricature of an austen fan who 1. knows very little about the actual novels and the historical context (she often acts out of place because she has nooo damn clue how georgian/regency society works - and sometimes you wouldn’t even need to have a clue, it’s just common sense, but homegirl stubbornly makes modern references and expects the bennets and everyone else to just get jiggy with it) and 2. mostly flails over darcy and his perfection, ignoring what actually makes him interesting as a character. meh. 

but it’s not enough that she makes no effort to understand/fit into the society she’s landed in. she also has to be very crass and rude. every other scene she says something offensive or bursts wildly into rooms and screams at people (???), throws hissy fits out of nowhere and wigs out because her beloved p&p is not supposed to be like this *waaah*. she’s just a mess. and that’s the trope they’re going for. darcy falls for her precisely because she’s such an “adorable” mess. meanwhile, real elizabeth is in modern-day england, having a blast (wish we got that series instead) and generally not feeling very keen on returning to 1811. so amanda is kind of a stand-in for lizzy, which GOD.

it’s basically the same as saying, “lizzy = amanda = winona ryder from reality bites”. which i suppose is due, in part, to these folks watching the 2005 p&p and seeing keira knightley being all rebellious and tomboyish. and yeah, that movie goes overboard with how bonnet-less and “free” their lizzy is, but this adaptation completely jumps the shark and claims that elizabeth bennet is every 90s quirky rom-com heroine to ever throw a snippy line at the male love interest. WHICH. GRRR. lizzy, though a wonderful heroine, is distinct. she’s not an archetype, she’s distinguishable from other female characters, imo. she’s a separate human being. she also observes conventions and decorum, she is a product of her time. jfc, she’s not gloria steinem. furthermore, canon!darcy would find 90s jaded rom-com heroine quite off-putting, especially the way amanda plays her, all crass and vulgar. darcy would not find a loose mouth refreshing. he’d find it common and frankly boring. there were ppl like amanda in those times, who, while not applying her vocabulary, were inelegant and foolish and no one thought they were adorable.

this isn’t to say they couldn’t have managed to do this well. they could’ve given amanda better characterization, restrained her outbursts and maybe played up the humor, but that’s the problem i keep coming back to. they take themselves so.seriously. amanda is neither particularly fleshed out nor an engaging screwball comedienne, a la lucille ball. she’s flat and crass. and she brings the whole satire down with her.

so whyyy do i say i hate-love Lost in Austen? i mean i rly went to town on the criticism, didn’t i (and i stand by everything i said)? well, it is exactly their failure to be a confident parody that makes this series so hatefully enjoyable. it’s so bad it’s good. now of course, there are some genuine moments i enjoy (there is some good writing here, it’s just soooooo poorly packaged) but for the most part, i adore just how terribly uneven this whole thing is. i laugh even when i’m not supposed to. especially when i’m not supposed to. if you have the curiosity to check them out, the scenes between amanda and darcy are gooold. he literally trembles with emotion and almost cries when amanda confesses to him she’s not a virgin. i shit you not. they have a one-off debate about “buttresses” and it’s supposed to be the height of banter. there’s this uber-dramatic *intense* scene where amanda is like “why are you here??? why did you come???” (they’re at hunsford) and darcy gets this mad glint in his eye like he’s heathcliff on the moor and he grabs her passionately like he’s about to kiss her face off and u see their profiles awkwardly in the firelight and it is HILARIOUS (it’s not meant to be, tho). there are scenes where you’re supposed to be horrified that bingley has succumbed to alcoholism and depression as he wonders around pemberley estate, yearning for jane, and it is uproarious. i literally can’t stop giggling. he PUNCHES darcy in the face! because it’s darcy’s fault he can’t have jane! aaaangst! and lots of laughter.

there are sooo many other great-terrible moments, i would fill up a whole blog and probably never do them justice. u just gotta see it to believe it. in a way i’m grateful that england is kooky enough that it allows shit like this to exist.

 but yeah, i think this is a failed parody-satire, and yet its failure is worth watching? it’s like that documentary about the process of making apocalypse now. idk, i’m not a hater. if you go into it by removing the notion that it is supposed to be connected to p&p, you will derive a lot of joy from it.

The only bands I wanted to see that day were Battle Beast, Apocalyptica, Sonata Arctica, and possibly Mastodon. This was the ~hot~ day meaning that Finnish people were walking around with their shirts off, in shorts, etc and I was in my uniqlo jacket 😁

Battle Beast 7/2 14:45-15:30

We headed straight to Battle Beast’s stage since I wanted to get as close as possible (we made it to the 2nd row!) My friend hadn’t seen them live and only heard maybe one song from them beforehand, so this was her first real experience of the band. They played all of my favorite songs and it was overall a really fun set. I took some photos but they kind of suck because I’m short and the lights were constantly flashing on stage.

We walked around the festival between sets. Autograph sessions were announced randomly during the festival again and we managed to get Sonata Arctica’s autographs. Again, they were nice people but I didn’t really have a conversation with them or anything else memorable. I was SUPER STOKED that Apocalyptica was having a signing session that evening though!

Before Apocalyptica’s set I was struggling in the covered seated dining area in the VIP section. My period was really trying to destroy me so I had to sit down for like 1 hour and try hard not to pass out from pain. I remember taking 2 Midols and downing half a beer before running off to see Apocalyptica. I made it to their set at the main stage a few minutes into their opening song and met an American HIM fan from the previous day. My friend Leslie wanted to get as close as she could for Sonata Arctica’s set at the tented area so we parted ways there.

Apocalyptica 7/2 17:35-18:35

I wasn’t as close to Apocalyptica’s set as I wanted to be, but it was still amazing to actually see them perform live. I’ve been a fan of Apocalyptica since I was 12 (I started to really get into Finnish bands ~3 years after I discovered HIM) and I’ve said this a thousand times on this blog but I truly never thought that I would see them perform live. I really loved everything about their set. I felt like I was watching performers in their natural habitats and the headbanging while playing the cello live is really something that every Apocalyptica fan should experience! There was a moment during their set where Eicca (he has a really beautiful name btw) broke a string on his cello and without any hiccups at all Perttu stepped in and started playing his cello like a mad man! Like he was covering Eicca while he seamlessly changed the string on his cello and that honestly blew my mind. I love this band.

I was fortunate enough to get Apocalyptica’s autographs and have a conversation with Eicca and Mikko, but I’ll get to that in a second. While I was waiting in line for their autographs with the American girls I met the previous day I spotted Gas Lipstick’s wife Natalie. I follow her fashion blog so that’s why I noticed her immediately (she’s really beautiful), then looked around her and noticed Gas with their daughter. I couldn’t believe it so I asked my friend if that was really him and she was like “oh shit yeah.” She went to take a photo with him and initially I didn’t want to bother him, but I changed my mind and got a photo. We didn’t have a conversation since every other HIM fan there noticed what we were doing and wanted a photo/autographs too.

Okay back to Apocalyptica’s autograph session! So I’ve been a fan of them for 12 years and they are super humble and easy-going people! If my memory serves me correctly I met Franky, Eicca, Mikko, Perttu, then Paavo. When I came up to them Franky & Eicca asked me where I was from. I told them California and they asked specifically where. I told them East Bay and I didn’t think they knew where that was, but they told me that they were having a show in Oakland in September of this year and I was speechless. It’s so cool for a foreigner (I mean they do travel a lot but I honestly didn’t think that people cared that Oakland is in East Bay for some reason?) to know the area that I was talking about. I was expecting them to say “Oh is that near San Francisco?” but no y’all they knew exactly where the fuck I was talking about. I was literally so speechless that I couldn’t talk to Perttu or Paavo but say “Hi” and “Thank you” to them. They are wonderful people and I’m totally seeing them in September! I already bought my tickets haha

After getting their autographs I decided to try and find my friend at Sonata Arctica’s set. I knew that she would be in the front and would be waiting for someone to get a setlist. I found her and she was SO LIT it was great. We both walked back to the main stage to see Mastodon and I saw another band member walking by us! Teemu came out of the VIP area where they hold private shows and I ran to him to ask for a photo. I usually try to make my interactions with band members as brief as possible since they obviously came out to watch another band play live. My friend and I watched Mastodon’s set for a good while then went back to the VIP area.

While we were there we saw Pär from Sabaton chillin with a beer. My friend is a huge fan of Sabaton, but was too shy to ask for an autograph. So I went up to him and explained that my friend was too shy to talk to him, but that she really wanted his autograph. He was like “she doesn’t need to be shy” and said of course he would give her an autograph, etc. His friends were super nice too and I spoke to them for a bit while he was talking to my friend. We both got photos with him and I think he was like 50% lit/drunk lol Nice guy!

Before we left the festival we went to the CD booth again to check out what they had left. We were looking for the Paara CD (again lol) among other random artists. When we had almost given up I looked down on the table in front of me and saw 1 copy of “Olet Mun Kaikuluotain” The store owner was talking to my friend when I discovered this, but when I picked it up I think he saw the look on my face and gave me a discount based off of my happiness lol It was 15€ but he sold it to me for 10€. I think he said it was like a “last copy/last day of Tuska” discount and I stared at him in disbelief for like a good 5 seconds before I eagerly told him that I would definitely buy it. Copies of “Olet Mun Kaikuluotain” are sold out online and I got #943 out of 1,000 ❤️ Nevertheless I had a mini freak-out as I was leaving the festival grounds.

Gates closed at 10pm that day and we went straight to the hostel since we were planning on visiting Estonia the next day. It actually took me a while to fall asleep that night because the sun didn’t want me to, but also because the snoring girl was really tired that night. The girl had to kick her bed twice, but then she started snoring with her when she finally fell asleep 😭 I need professional earplugs next time man.
