The origin of bananas is placed in Southeast Asia, in the jungles of Malaysia, Indonesia, or the Philippines, and it is believed that the earliest written reference to bananas is in Sanskrit, around 500 B.C.  However, archaeological findings show that a wild, seeded, ancestor of the modern banana formed part of the diet of Sri Lanka’s Balangoda Man, who inhabited the jungles of Batadombalena around 10,000 BC. Bananas are also said to have been cultivated in the Kuk Valley of New Guinea in about 5,000 B.C.     When Alexander the Great invaded India in 327 B.C. his soldiers are said to have seen extensive plantations of bananas in the Indus Valley. It was, in fact, Alexander the Great who took bananas to the West, while Arabs/North Africans are credited with having given bananas their present name (the word “banana” is derived from the Arabic word “banaan,” which means “finger”). As an aside, while certain scholars hold that the word “averi” is the Sri Lankan equivalent for “hands” (which ties in nicely with the Arabic “banaan” concept), we do not have any concrete evidence from within the Sinhalese or Tamil vocabulary to back this position. In any event, Islamic literature shows that Arab traders popularised the habit of consuming bananas along their trade route. Later, the Dutch, Portuguese, and Spanish caught on, resulting in bananas becoming the worldwide superstars they are today. There are 1,000 varieties of bananas in the world, which are divided into about 50 groups, (although several are said to have been brought from South India, or scientifically introduced to Sri Lanka). Cavendish banana, also known as the Canary Island or Chinese banana, is the only type of banana that many Westerners have ever tasted or even heard of. While the original home of the Cavendish banana is said to be southern China, the Sri Lankan Cavendish, or binkehel, was likely derived from an introduction to Mauritius, which occurred no later than the early 20th century. Cavendish acquired an early specimen of the Cavendish banana plant from Mauritius, which he raised in his greenhouse. This plant is believed to be the progenitor of nearly all of the world's Cavendish banana varieties ... In Asian countries (the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam), (Philippines 12 commercial banana varieties / Saging). (Vietnam 28 different varieties of banana). (Malaysia Department of Agriculture has so far registered 77 varieties and 209 clones, although only a few clones are popular for commercial planting. Cultivated # 5). (India, more than 670 types of "wild and cultivated" bananas) .. (Thailand .. 100 varieties of bananas native to the country)                                                                                                                                                                                                .*********************************************************************                                                                                                                                                         Farm Tedeschi in Punta Bulocawe Carles iloilo Philippines..                                 produces 12 types of original saging made in Philippines ..

Ito yung masarap na dessert from Iloilo na medyo mahirap kainin. Dumidikit kasi yung paper cones na balot sa laman na banana chips. 😂
It is best to partner this delectable pinoy dessert with piping hot kapeng barako in the morning.

Exploring Gigantes Island
Tumblr media
If you are an island lover and if you want to unwind and explore some other beaches but still haven't decided where to go, then I redcommend visiting one of Iloilo's exotic seascape, and that is the Gigantes Island in Carles.
The Gigantes Islands, also known as Isla de Gigantes or the Islands of Giants is located in Northern Coast of the municipality of Carles in Iloilo. It is also composed of 2 big Islands which is Gigantes Norte and Gigantes Sur. Within one and a half our you can arrive Isla de Gigantes from Bancal port by taking a "bangka" or a sailboat.
There are a lot of activities you can do in Gigantes Island, you can have Island Hopping, enjoy Pristine Beaches, Feast of fresh seafood especially scallops and "wasay-wasay" , relax at Antonia Beach, visit the Old Lighthouse Ruins, Explore Mystical Cave or what they called "Pawikan" or "Bakwitan" Cave, and Sunbathing at Bantigue Sandbar. You can also visit Cabugaw Gamay Island where you can take a selfie at the top of the Rocks and get some Instagrammable pictures. There is also a Saltwater Lagoon or what they called Tangke where you can have a swimming during hightide. Antonia Beach also offers tent when you want to have an overnight at the Island and they also offers water activities like Jet Ski and riding at Banana boat.
Its so nice to be at this Island, there you can have a peace of mind and feel the experience of God's creation. The beauty of Nature there is very over whelming, you'll see there the different rocks formation and the clear blue seawater.

Aswang
The myth of the aswang is popular in the Western Visayan regions such as Capiz, Iloilo and Antique. The trademark or major feature of aswangs which distinguish them from other Filipino mythological creatures is their propensity to replace stolen cadavers with the trunk of a banana tree carved in the cadaver's likeness. They are also said to like to eat small children. Their favorite body parts are the liver and heart. Other local names, especially in Capiz are tik-tik and wak-wak.   Aswang, at times, is also a generic term applied to all types of mythological creatures, ghosts, manananggals, witches, shapeshifters, lycanth and monsters. Aswang is often interchanged with manananggal, but they are different. There are also characteristics and features that the aswang also varies from Filipino to Jalapeño. They usually live near the mountains and they never go in to cities The myth of the aswang is popular in the Visayan region of the Philippines, specially in the western provinces of Capiz, Iloilo Antique. Aside from entertainment value, mothers are said to tell their children aswang stories to keep them off the streets and keep them home at night. Similar to Count Vlad III Dracula of Transylvania in Vampire stories, the most popular characters are the clan of Teñente/ Tenyente/ Tiniente Gimo of the town of Dueñas, Iloilo.  An aswang is a regular townsperson by day and prefer an occupation related to meat, such as butchery or making sausages.   Aswangs have an ageless appearance and a quiet, shy and elusive manner. They can be distinguished from humans by two signs. One is the bloodshot eyes from staying up all night looking for opportunities to sneak into houses where funeral wakes are being held, and stealing the dead bodies. According to the elderly, the aswang can also transform from human to animal and animal to human. The aswang can disguise him/herself as a pig, dog or a black bird. Supposedly if a person looks at them in the eyes, the reflection would appear inverted. During their nocturnal activities, they walk with their feet facing backwards and toenails reversed. One type is the tik-tik which transforms into a huge bird/bat at night and prowls. The tik-tik looks for a pregnant person. Then extends a very long proboscis into the womb and licks the baby to kill it. While performing, a 'tik-tik' sound is heard. In some stories, the tik-tik is an aswang's familiar, said to confuse people by its 'tik-tik' sound. If the aswang is near, the sound would be faint so that people hearing it would think that the aswang is still far away. The term wak-wak or wuk-wuk is frequently used for the same creature in the Cebu region. The legends of the wak-wak and tik-tik are much the same, but the wak-wak is specifically supposed to change into its birdlike form by leaving behind its lower body, much like the Manananggal, another Philippine vampire. The cry of a night bird which makes a "wuk-wuk-wuk" sound is believed to be the call of this monster and is feared by superstitious villagers. As with the call of the tik-tik, the wak-wak is believed able to make its cry sound distant when the creature is near.

Baye-baye from Miag-ao, Iloilo
W hat makes the bayi-bayi of Miagao unique from the bayi-bayi in other parts of Iloilo? Aside from the delicious taste, it’s the packaging. Mostly they are only wrapped in cellophane. Though there may be some bayi-bayi makers in other parts of Iloilo who do wrap in banana leaf, still their packaging is different. Miagao has an attractive way of wrapping the bite-sized bayi-bayi in shiny, bright green banana leaf. They look like miniature, fluffed-up green pillows. Using banana leaf as its wrapper started since the very first bayi-bayi in Miagao was made and that was surely a long time ago.

Iloilo’s Cuisine Delicacies
By: Jeniel Wabe
The municipality of Iloilo City, located on the Philippine island of Panay, is our next culinary stop. Historic houses and Spanish colonial churches are prominent features. Iloilo is in the heart of the Philippine archipelago that it was named as the “City of Love”, which includes southern Panay Island and Guimaras Island Province, which is just across the sea. The city is worth visiting because of its rich Spanish Colonial history, as well as the yearly Dinagyang Festival, gorgeous heritage monuments, delightfully fresh seafood, and distinct Ilonggo delicacies.
Let us explore the local food and native cuisine meals that are popular in Iloilo when it comes to the characteristic Ilongo delicacies. There are many classic foods that can be found in Iloilo because of the taste that can satisfy your appetite. The best part of their food in Iloilo: very affordable, a budget friendly signature Ilonggo meals. We listed at least 5 Ilonggo delicacies that are worth trying while you are staying in Iloilo.
1. La Paz Batchoy
Our first in the list is the Ilongos version of La Paz Batchoy. Generally you can see different types of batchoy in Manila or any part of the Philippines that offer this kind of dish but have you tried the authentic Batchoy in Iloilo? Well, the components in this warm bowl of flavorful Filipino noodle soup are fresh round egg noodles, pork offal, and chicken or beef stock. La Paz Batchoy was proudly originated in Iloilo invented by Federico Guillergan in 1938 at La Paz market. Many restaurants in Iloilo are doing their best to make the batchoy as uniquely flavorful in any combination of shrimp paste, chicharon, best enjoyed also with a side of puto and even bagoong (guinamos).

2. Pancit Molo
Another Filipino pork dumpling soup named Pancit Molo is a sort of soup made with wonton wrappers that started in Iloilo City's Molo area. Though Pancit molo has Chinese influences and was localized by the Ilonggos trying to create of their own version. So this dish is prepared by wontons packed with shredded chicken and, on sometimes, ground pork or shrimp rice flour is used to make wontons. You wouldn’t expect that it was named Pancit but you can’t find any noodles. It is served with a steamy huge bowl perfect for cold weather by taking a sip of a tasty pork dumpling soup.

3. Chicken Binakol
Let’s move to another traditional soup in Iloilo that mostly every Ilonggos knows how to cook this dish named Chicken Binakol. This recipe is quite similar to Tinola, but the main difference is the inclusion of coconut water and pork, which makes the broth a little sweeter than you may expect. If you want to try cooking this dish then you must try the Ilonggos version that is flavored ginger, garlic, and onion with chunks of chayote or papaya and chili leaves. This soup is perfect for those who love chicken in a soup with a unique taste.

4. Tinu-om
The town of Cabatuan Iloilo represents their one proudly famous food the “Tinu-om na Manok.” Yes it’s another popular native chicken soup that is commemorated during the Tinu-om Festival in a 10th days duration of fiesta celebration with colorful expeditions of dances and music in the municipality. Tinu-om is the town's history as well as a popular soup delicacy composed of native chicken souped with spices such as tomatoes, onions, garlic, ginger, and lemon grass, then wrapped in banana leaves. In cabatuan, Tinu-om in native language means “Balot” that means a chicken wrapped in banana leaves. In making this dish, you certainly need patience and follow the right procedure of cooking the tinu-om or you will fail in the process because of the “Maling Timpla” the wrong taste of proportionality of mixed ingredients.

5. Laswa
Our last but not the least, a very simple and healthy dish that you can even cook for yourself at home the well-known tasty Ilonggo dish named Laswa. This dish is mostly vegetable-based recipes with a few meats and seafood thrown in for good nutritious meal perfect for family eating bonding. The laswa is similar to dinengdeng and pinakbet in Ilocus but the version for ilonggos uses guinamos as a latter flavor enhancer. Patola, eggplant, sigarilyas, long beans, banana heart (puso), okra, calabasa, malunggay, and saluyot are some of the most inexpensive components for Laswa, which is a boiled vegetable seasoned with salt. Since this dish is flexible, you can add or customize your own ingredients to create a new promising flavor. Enjoy the serve of a nutritious vegetable in a pot or huge bowl, a simple and quick dish yet very healthy and delicious Laswa.

Grapes are on sale now so putting together fruit in a salad dressed simply with freshly whipped double cream is a cinch! Ingredients chosen for flavor and texture: green grapes, navel orange, banana, peeled Delicious apple; dried cranberries, yellow raisins, walnut halves. When my mother made fruit salad in Iloilo, she would ask me to shake a can of Nestle cream.
