closed starter for @oxtofmydcpth (Hunter) location: his place
Illyana was disgruntled. There was no other way to describe her demeanor as she strolled up to Hunter's place, knocking almost rudely. She couldn't even say she wasn't getting paid enough for this, because she was - but it's not like any of that mattered now.
""Once again, your constant posting has ruined my life," was her greeting as he opened the door, though there was a bit of relief on her face to see that he was, for all intents and purposes, okay. She'd spent the first few days just trying to acclimate to the new normal before seeking him out, and the idea that he could have gotten part of him ripped off didn't bring her any pleasure despite their very (on her end at least) contentious relationship. She cared about him, but he was also the reason why she was now not only his babysitter, but stuck here as well. All the same, she let out a sharp whistle as Flash came bounding up. "I come bearing a gift, at least." Letting out another sigh of defeat, her shoulders sagged a little bit. "How the fuck do you live here?"

Previous - Next - Start Road to Recovery
So now Robbie has met a new unsuspecting victim friend! That makes three of them counting with the girls, but Hunter is the only one who will not run away (Nico) or tell him to go fuck himself (Illyana) if he tries to infodump like a champ share his passion for cars.
Which is... actually a great way for Hunter to get introduced to a lot of modern concepts like what is fuel, what does an engine do, etc. She is very lost in this new world and he can help. It's a good idea! That it is if he manages to stick to the basics and does not get derailed. How successful will he be at that is up for you to decide.
I wanted to do something easy and fun so I could experiment a bit with a more webtoon-like format so I decided to do this mini-epilogue for chapter 1. In Midnight Suns, when you reach the basic friendship tier with Robbie Reyes he shows Hunter his car, and this strip is based on that.
I forgot to say this in the previous update, but I'm using this series as a way to experiment and learn how to do comics so I could improve both my writing and my drawing skills. Since now I'm jumping between archs I'd be grateful to get feedback about what kind of stuff did and didn't work in your opinion in the first arch of this thing so I can do better next time. So feel free to reach me privately if you are too shy to write criticism in the comments.

Idk if you have the others’ costumes in mind but I noticed Jean’s dressed up as Carrie White, Morph’s dressed up as Charles, and Jubilee, well… Kool Aid Man 🤣🤣
Maybe Kitty as a devil and Illyana as an angel, Scott as Jason Voorhess?? Logan dressing in all black and saying he’s a gravedigger or a vampire hunter? GAGDGDBDBBD
HEHEHEH
I had some costumes in mind but not all!! Obs Jean as Carrie was the #1 pick for me because it's perfect. I imagined Scott and Logan literally going the bare minimum- but I LOVE the idea of Scott as jason!! As for Logan, I pictured him just dressed casually in a flannel. He says he's dressed up as himself as anyone asks, but Jubes starts calling him a lumberjack and it sticks.
As for Kitty, I had pictured her as a pirate and I didn't think of anything for Illyana, BUT I LOVE THE ANGEL/DEVIL COSTUMES OMG. I pictured Xavier as somthing goofy (because going up to a house for candy and seeing your professors/headmaster is a nightmare) so he chooses to be a clown and it does not help. I think storm would be a stunning bride of Frankenstein- but overall I cant actually think of a costume that fits her absolute beauty.
Some other random costumes/characters that were cut would be Wanda as a witch (obs), Pietro as a devil, Jubilee as the scene from the matrix with fake bullets attached to wires around her, Roberto as lemonade or something wierd bc he lost a bet to Jubilee, and Emma as the witch from Narnia. Also Gambit and Rogue as Flynn rider and rapunzel, but reversed where Remy's in the dress (also lost a bet)

Listen, y'all, I warned you I'm slow with this kind of thing*, but it's finally happened--I've started playing Midnight Sons!
Taking points off for making me play with the avengeriest Avengers at the start, but I've met Illyana now, so all is forgiven.
Not as much customisation for your player character Hunter as I expected, but that may be for the best for immersion... I was very tempted to recreate Leah of Hel.
Oooh, I get tot talk to her, goodbye Tumblr, I'll be busy for a while.
*) Okay, my work didn't help. Usually in my job, it's one big project every few months. Now I just handed in my third one this February. Finally it's vacation and Midnight Suns time! Other vacation goals, catch up on the last 1-2 years of X-Men comics before the new era launches.

ANOTHER AU!? I know what you're saying... Gwen, you're nuts. But not only are you absolutely right, I think this one might be my most ambitious one yet. As a young nerd, there were two groups. The Marvel fans and the DC fans. And while the rivalry certainly has calmed down a bit, I was almost always torn. So, earlier in the week, I decided to do the one thing that every fanfic writer has tried at least once.
A Marvel/DC crossover.
But unlike the typical realm merger, to put it in Mortal Kombat terms, this is a universe where both properties coexist. For example, picture a group of people walking to a Big Belly Burger while listening to Just the Facts with J. Jonah Jameson. That's just a fraction. I have an ENTIRE starting cast as well.

Marvel has announced a Midnight Suns comic book to match the game release in September!
“Coming in September, Ethan Sacks and Luigi Zagaria assemble a new team of mystical heroes in 'Midnight Suns' #1.”
It’s the first time we’re getting a book with the name of the team, since they were more like arcs/crossovers.
The team matches some characters in the game (which explains Wolverine), along with Nico and Illyana. Instead of Robbie or Johnny as the Ghost Rider, we’re getting Kushala (yes!!!), whereas Blade has been part of the team since the very beginning (it’s his 4th, making him the only character to be a member in all four versions). Lastly, we’re getting Zoe (SHE’S FINALLY FREE FROM STRANGE ACADEMY YEEES, LET’S GOOO)!
Personally, I’m sad that it’s the first Stephen isn’t around to gather the team (it has always been him or Wong). But I’m also absurdly happy to see Illyana, Nico, Zoe and Kushala!!
There’s a mispelling discourse going on (Midnight Sons/Suns) but honestly I don’t mind that much since both are great names and one of them doesn’t imply it’s a team made exclusively of men. So all good, all nice for me.
“A dark prophesy and apocalyptic new villains with horrifying powers the likes of which Earth has never faced before ordains a team of Midnight Suns to rise and tear @#$% up! But what does this new threat have to do with the Sorcerer Supreme’s past? And why is Strange Academy student Zoe Laveau number one on the Suns’ list?”
"As a fan of the original MIDNIGHT SONS, I am honored and stoked to continue that legacy, and I'm grateful to editor Tom Groneman for giving me the chance to dabble in this mystical corner of the Marvel Universe,” Sacks said. “We're going to conjure up some wild otherworldly action to go along with some themes that have real world resonance. Having fallen in love with the team book concept on STAR WARS: BOUNTY HUNTERS, I'm primed and ready to put this lineup of heroes through hell...so to speak."
"Seeing the first issue pages come in, I can also say artist Luigi Zagaria's art is going to cast a spell over readers,” he said of his collaborator. “It's just stunning work. He's at the top of his game."
MIDNIGHT SUNS #1 (OF 5) Written by ETHAN SACKS Art by LUIGI ZAGARIA Cover by DAVID NAKAYAMA On Sale 9/14
[Full article here]
It seems that Stephen will be involved (sorta), now let’s wait and see how they portray him in the flashback since it’s all we’re getting for now :’)
PS: I adored this team! It’s almost my perfect cast, it’s only missing Jericho and Stephen, but it’s okay, we’re getting Magik and Zoe in their places.

November reads
I thought I was going to get a ton more non-academic reading done this month because I had a week of break, but that was not exactly true :/
Did still read some good stuff though!
The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco: Reread for an upcoming podcast episode about necromancy. The world-building is neat but the pacing is very slowwwwwww. On the fence about whether I’ll continue the series.
Hellblazer vol. 1: Original Sins: by Jamie Delano: I regret to announce that the new evolution of my “coping with stress by reading gritty comics where the main character is having a time” strategy has become reading Hellblazer comics! There was definitely some stuff about this that seemed dated (I feel like the use of voodoo and African magic in the first few issues could have been better) but I enjoyed the “fuck Margaret Thatcher” and John Constantine is an intriguing character so I will be reading more.
A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers: I looooooved this–soft solarpunk novella about a nonbinary tea monk and a robot hanging out. Very peaceful and hopeful and also made me cry.
Legendborn by Tracy Deonn: THIS WAS SO GOOD. Urban fantasy inspired by Arthurian mythos starring a Black girl drawn into a secret society of demon hunters, exploring the themes of power and legacy that come with Arthurian story through the history of slavery in America. Very excited for the sequel!
Siege: Battleworld by Kieron Gillen: I still don’t really get the point of the whole Secret Wars cross-over event but this was an interesting AU comic. Love my lesbian sorceress queens Leah of Hel and Illyana Rasputin in the background.
S.W.O.R.D. vol. 1 by Al Ewing and Valerio Schiti: Comics? Are Good? Actually? It’s the X-Men in space! With great art! And an interesting team line-up! Al Ewing has quickly become one of my fave comic writers based on this and Schiti’s art is soooooooo good. Got a bit derailed by a larger comic event but sowed some seeds for some other interesting cosmic-y X-Men stuff that I’m excited to see unfold in future issues.
New Mutants vol. 1 by Vita Ayala and Rod Reis: I WAS gonna chronologically read my way up to this because I’ve been making good headway on classic New Mutants comics this year, but I couldn’t resist skipping ahead to this. Absolutely love what Ayala is doing in this book–exploring the people who slip through the cracks of the new supposed mutant paradise, possibly turning the Shadow King into a more nuanced character, and giving Karma a storyline about her brother that is MUCH better than the shit Matthew Rosenberg pulled in New Mutants: Dead Souls. Also Reis’s art is amazing, very reminiscent of the best classic New Mutants art.

SO HERE’S THE THING about kitty’s funeral right.
its so devoid of emotion like why have it. usually funeral issues are only the funeral so you can honor the character and see others mourn them?? not here. we had the weird krakoan drug subplot, resurrection of kitty (that could have waited from a storytelling narrative) and the funeral itself and the funeral got hte least amount of screentime.
why wasn’t anyone who cared about kitty there??? she’s been dead a year in comics we never got logans reaction. i dont even care about kiotr but its weird he never reacted. never got illyana’s reaction (and she lit her on fire). rachel didn’t get to react she just stood there. ororo barely got any reaction this time because she was busy with the drug subplot. where was stevie hunter? its so weird that duggan thinks emma frost is the most important person in kittys life --i like that they’re friends now, but also ?????
and aside from burning her body, the BIG KRAKOAN MYSTERY for a year was “why cant we clone kitty” and its so weird her death and that mystery never touched other books. you’d think people across titles would be reeling from kitty’s death and scared shitless at the possibility that you can’t come back this time. but nope never got that. and the reason she couldn’t resurrect being “oh she kept drowning in egg goo she needed to phase out” is so laughably bad.
its just bad storytelling but the funeral issue also brings back something i’ve said about krakoa since day 1: its bullshit to erase characters real minority status and their real cultures in place of pretend culture.

UNCANNY X-MEN #145-147 MAY - JULY 1981 BY CHRIS CLAREMONT, DAVE COCKRUM, JOE RUBINSTEIN AND GLYNIS WEIN
SYNOPSIS (FROM MARVEL DATABASE)
Stevie Hunter and Ororo went to see Britain's Royal Ballet. While watching the ballet, Miss Locke entered their box and touched them with a fatal contact poison, a poison she had the antidote to. The poison was merely to buy their undivided attention as Miss Locke related how and why Doom captured Arcade, that she would like the X-Men to rescue Arcade, and that many of the X-Men's family and friends had been captured to ensure that they would. Ororo fell unconscious, and when she awoke Stevie and Miss Locke were gone. She checked on Amanda Sefton and the Greys, but they were all missing. She returned to the mansion.
The X-Men contacted Beast to get information about Dr. Doom from the Avengers. Wolverine argued that they couldn't submit to blackmail, they had to nail Murderworld so hard no one would attack their loved ones and friends again. Ororo agreed, and had a plan. Professor X telepathically contacted former X-Men Havok, Polaris, Iceman, and Banshee to provide extra manpower for the two-pronged assault. Team 1 (Storm, Angel, Colossus, Wolverine, Nightcrawler) would rescue Arcade from Dr. Doom, buying time for Havok, Polaris, Iceman, and Banshee to rescue their friends from Murderworld.
Professor X was unable to contact Cyclops. That may have been because he was just waking up on an unknown Caribbean beach where he and Lee Forrester may have been the only inhabitants. Lee had been tossed overboard by a freak storm, and Scott dove in after her, and now they were stranded.
Meanwhile at Doom's Castle, the Adirondacks, Storm made a dramatic entrance and demanded to speak with Dr. Doom. Dr. Doom emerged and consented to discussing Storm's demand (that he release Arcade) over dinner. Meanwhile the other X-Men in her team infiltrated the castle to rescue Arcade. Unfortunately for them, they found Arcade's cell empty, and were then set upon by men in battle-suits. A fierce battle ensued with the X-Men victorious. In the dining room, Doom was monitoring the battle while engaging Storm in conversation. When it became apparent the battle-suits had lost, Doom presented another of his guests, Arcade. Realizing it was a trap, Storm attacked Doom, but he withstood the assault and hit Storm with a weapon that turned her into a statue. The other X-Men arrived seconds too late, only to be laid low by energy weapons. Colossus emerged unscathed, but Dr. Doom paralyzed him with a neural disruptor and emerged victorious.
Dr. Doom captured the X-Men and devised cunning traps for each of them. Nightcrawler was in a featureless box, incapable of knowing where he was or where he could safely teleport to. Colossus was on an apparent mountain peak, with a whirlpool slowly climbing upwards. Wolverine was in a checkerboard amorphous anti-gravity room that was driving his senses crazy and every time he hit a wall, it accelerated him and Angel was in a giant birdcage where the perch was safe, but any attempt to leave it lead to many low-intensity lasers turning the air into a maze of crisscrossing beams. Storm was trapped in organic chrome - the epitome of confinement - a state which triggered her claustrophobia and caused her to unconsciously generate a fierce Storm across the whole eastern seaboard.
That storm caused a near miss lightning bolt to jolt Cyclops' eye-bandage off, revealing his optic blast to Lee Forrester. The bandage was re-applied, but Scott would have some explaining to do.
The reserve X-Men called in to follow the second half of Storm's plan to fly over the derelict amusement park where the X-Men were released last time they tangled with Murderworld. Polaris used her magnetic powers to trace the underground structures back to Murderworld. Havok 'dug' a tunnel and Polaris short-circuited the electronics to prevent detection, or so she thought. But then a holographic Miss Locke welcomed them, and the games began. Trap doors separated our heroes.
Havok found himself on a roller coaster with spacecraft shooting at him. Some were holograms, but some were dangerously real. He blasted some, but then things looked to get worse as he was headed into a large mothership's mouth. He jumped out at the last second, landing on the outside of the mother-ship. Predictably, his roller coaster car exploded.
Iceman found himself on an ice rink with some enraged hockey players. An ice shield kept them at bay, but the excess weight tumbled the robot players through the ice and into acid. More players skated into the rink, and heating vents turned on.
Banshee found himself in an old-west shoot-out. Deprived of his powers, he had to rely on his Interpol training. He out shot the other robot, but its padres wanted in on the action. Sean used a 'micro-bomb' to destroy them, blowing a hole through the wall where he saw Moira being tied to train tracks.
Polaris found herself on a merry-go-round. She got distracted by what looked like Illyana Rasputin running by her, only to be attacked by the merry-go-round's horses. She destroyed them with her power and went after the girl, except it wasn't Illyana at all, but a robot with a gun. Of course, robots nor guns were no threat to a mistress of magnetism, but then the ride started spinning incredibly quickly, launching itself into the air and detonating, but Polaris managed to protect herself. However, an inhibitor field caused her to fall.
Polaris fell into Iceman's chamber, who caught her. However, the weight of his ice-slide collapsed the rink surface below, meaning he needed to escape now or be eaten by acid. He super-cooled the wall in front of him, making it brittle enough to smash through.
Havok got into the utility tunnels and shorted out a major box. Chambers went to investigate and was taken out by Havok.
Banshee defeated the villain tying her, but she was tied with wire so untying her quickly was impossible. However, along the track came Amanda Sefton and Candy Southern tied up in a roller coaster car, so blowing up the track would kill them. Banshee resigned himself to having to blow up the track when Polaris and Iceman arrived, preventing anyone's death. Suddenly Moira, Amanda, and Candy exploded. They were all robot simulacrums. Our heroes were saved by Polaris's quick magnetic shield.
Miss Locke watched all of this with glee until Havok showed up and trashed her firearm. The control center disabled, the X-Men quickly freed the hostages and made it back out to the hover-jet to discover a major storm outside.
Doom had also noticed the Storm, and it worried him. Arcade, however, was unconcerned and he noticed that Nightcrawler just disappeared from his cell.
Nightcrawler finds himself high in the air above Doom's castle, having teleported blind from a featureless room (last issue). Falling unconscious briefly, Nightcrawler awakes to find himself falling frighteningly fast. He skydives for an updraft and then teleports into the lake near Doom's castle - emerging alive but shivering. He reflects on the circumstances that brought him to this situation (last two issues).
Doom has not failed to notice Nightcrawler's escape, and he orders his men to recapture the X-Man. Doom is worried about the growing storm centered on his castle, although Arcade is unfazed. Doom's unease is echoed by NORAD.
Nightcrawler makes his re-entrance to the castle, disabling two guards. Elsewhere, Colossus has discovered that the lasers below are attuned to size and that chunks of Colossus' size are zapped, those of Peter Rasputin's size are left untouched. Taking a deep breath, he swims downwards, past the cannons, turning into Colossus only when he's safely past. He punches a hole in the wall.
In his giant birdcage Angel has figured out that the lasers which fire when he leaves the perch are actually patterned to create a maze. He flies this maze at high speed and escapes just as his cell detonates behind him - only to get a mouthful of water as Colossus's flood washes over him.
Wolverine, trapped in an anti-gravity chamber which is royally messing with his senses, tries to embrace the beast without letting it control him. He hacks into anything he hits, and eventually, the anti-gravity gives out, dropping him onto the floor. Wolvie carves his way out of the cell and notices the loud thunder shaking the very castle. Ororo must be in trouble, so he rushes up the stairs to confront Doom! Doom tells 'Ororo' (a robot) to deal with him, and Wolvie trashes the robot. Doom blasts Wolverine, but Nightcrawler's timely arrival is enough for the X-Men to turn the tables. Wolverine offers a deal - Doom's life for Storm's. Doom hands them a device that will restore Storm... and it does...
Storm has become one with the planet, with all its myriad of elemental forces at her command, and though Doom uses the other X-Men's distraction to escape Wolverine's clutches, Storm easily overpowers him. Of course, Storm's not-so-tender ministrations aren't reserved solely for Doom, as Colossus finds out when he tries to reason with her. The castle is being torn apart by the storm outside, and Dr. Doom and the X-Men may well be torn apart by the Storm inside. Finally, Colossus says something that triggers Storm's psyche to re-assert itself, and she brings the storm back under control, although it costs her much.
Doom is strangely pleased that Ororo survives the ordeal. Storm again asks for Arcade's freedom, which Doom grants for an apology (rather grudgingly given) from Arcade. Doom also apologizes to Storm, and asks to begin anew (with Storm in particular - yes Doom is hitting on Storm), and Storm consents - a clean slate from that point.
In the Caribbean, Lee and Scott awaken to discover a strange building has emerged from the ocean overnight on the island they're stranded on!
REVIEW
John Byrne’s departure is really felt in this story. Cockrum art feels too aged. And full of inconsistencies. I am not sure if it was Claremont that came up with that dialogue about Doom replacing Wolverine’s costume, but it feels like a continuity error. Perhaps the craziest thing is Storm’s change of costume while she was a statue. Where does it come from?
The villains in this story are forgettable. And yes, I include fake Dr. Doom. Who wasn’t supposed to be a doombot, but since Byrne was writing Doctor Doom on Fantastic Four, and didn’t like the way the character was treated by Claremont, he decided to explain as Doom being replaced by a Doombot. You can read more about it here.
I give this story a score of 5

In Uncanny X-Men # 153, "Kitty's Fairy Tale", Kitty Pryde, the teenage member of the X-Men, tells a bedtime story to young Illyana Rasputin, who was living with the X-Men at the time. The story recasts the X-Men, including the recently deceased Jean Grey, in the roles of fairy tale characters. One such character was a giant black dragon named "Lockheed",[2] who was based on the X-Men's modified Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird jet aircraft.
Not long afterward, the X-Men are captured by the alien race, the Brood, and taken to a Brood-colonized planet. Here, Kitty meets a cat-sized purple dragon who resembles the creature from her fairy tale, which she also names "Lockheed."[3] Lockheed is actually a member of a highly advanced dragon-like extraterrestrial race, who are capable of traveling through space via special astral ships which transport their essences. Their society is similar to insect hives, with the individual being only part of the "Flock". Lockheed had been celebrated by his people as a brave fighter and hero against the Brood, but had demonstrated individual attitudes and wishes which were realized only when he encountered the X-Men.
Lockheed saves Kitty from the Brood, and then secretly departs along with her.[3] She, as well as Professor X and her teammates, are unaware of his presence in the X-Mansion until he again saves Kitty's life from a nest of alien Sidrian hunter hatchlings.[4] The X-Men accept his presence,[5] and Lockheed has since become Kitty's longtime companion.
To a lesser degree, Lockheed also bonds with Illyana Rasputin,[volume & issue needed] who, after being abducted into the dimension of Limbo (also known as Otherplace) by the sorcerer Belasco, had aged into a teenager, manifested her own mutant powers, and been installed as Kitty's roommate. Lockheed occasionally accompanies Illyana after she joins the X-Men's "junior team", the New Mutants, including an adventure where the two encounter Brood-controlled clones of the X-Men.[6]
Secret WarsEdit
During the Secret Wars the X-Men, including Lockheed, are transported to an alien planet nicknamed "Battleworld". There Lockheed meets a green, female alien dragon, supposedly created by the Beyonder's lingering power. This second dragon accompanied Lockheed and his allies to Earth, but she grew to gigantic size upon arrival and rampaged across Tokyo. She seemingly vanished from existence when Lockheed rejected her,[7] though she eventually resurfaced. In the companion series Spider-Man and the Secret Wars, it is shown that Lockheed spent some time patrolling Denver, Colorado, which had been taken to Battleworld as well, protecting its citizens from alien attack.[8]
ExcaliburEdit
In addition to serving with the X-Men alongside Kitty, he joins her when she co-founds the British superhero team Excalibur.[9] There he would form a friendship with Widget.
Lockheed participates in the so-called Cross-Time Caper, which involves him and his teammates leaping through dimensions on a train. The train itself is from an alternate universe, and it is discovered that its power source is an alternate version of Lockheed himself. The two Lockheeds become good friends, although the other Lockheed desires to stay on the train. Lockheed travels with the team (and their ally, Alistaire Stuart) on several adventures throughout multiple realities. The team also encounters a humanoid version of Lockheed. He and a female Nightcrawler analogue together adopt the identity of Captain Britain, protecting the citizens of a magic-heavy planet. Near the end of the Caper, Lockheed and the team believe Kitty to be lost in the dimensions; in reality she had been transported home far earlier than the rest of the group. The intervention of the vastly powerful Saturnyne allows the team to return home.[10]
Eventually, Lockheed's decision to leave with Kitty and the X-Men comes back to haunt him. By leaving so unexpectedly, he had abandoned his fiancée, whom he had been due to wed the following day. While healing from injuries gained from fighting Doctor Doom,[11] his astral form is apprehended by the Flock and made to stand trial for treason. After managing to explain his motives and saving his fellows from a piloting accident, he is officially exiled from his race, but on amicable terms.[12]
Lockheed's affections for Kitty earn him the ire of interdimensional entities called Bamfs, characters from the fairy tale Kitty once told Illyana. Like Lockheed, these were real as well. These small versions of Nightcrawler also love Kitty, in their own way. At one point, jealous of Lockheed's relationship with Kitty, they invade the tunnels under Muir Island and hold him prisoner for some time. Unfortunately, Lockheed's penchant for hiding after Kitty moves did not help his situation, as Kitty simply thought he was again being difficult.[volume & issue needed]
Lockheed develops a severe distaste for the secret agent Pete Wisdom, Kitty's love interest. Lockheed demonstrates that he has the ability to speak, but only talks to Wisdom, telling him that he "hates him". Wisdom tells Kitty about this, but she believes he is only joking, and he suffers the frequent theft of his clothing and cigarettes. Even so, Lockheed does save Wisdom's life at one point, although he tells the Londoner "I still 'ate yoo." It appears that one reason Lockheed dislikes Wisdom so much is that he much prefers Kitty's previous boyfriend, Colossus. This is demonstrated at the wedding of Captain Britain and Meggan, when Lockheed attempts to help them reconnect by snatching the bride's garter and dropping it into Piotr's hands just after Kitty had won Meggan's bouquet.[volume & issue needed]
Later, after Kitty left Excalibur and the X-Men entirely, it is believed that Lockheed had died. In reality, Lockheed had been found, wounded and confused, by a pair of girls who practiced witchcraft. He bonds with them until he discovers that the girls use their abilities to terrorize the local populace. The duo were soon humiliated in battle by their rival, another young girl with powers. This new friend heals Lockheed and directs him back to Kitty.[volume & issue needed]
Back on the X-MenEdit
Kitty eventually rejoins the X-Men and Lockheed happily follows. When the X-Men battle the alien Ord, Lockheed saves the day with his fire breath.[13]
Lockheed becomes part of a training exercise for the younger students at Xavier's institute. He was the "flag" in a game of Capture the Flag, hiding in the middle of the hedge maze. This created problems because many of the students found it hard to actually believe in a living, miniature dragon; the mutant Wither ended up endangering Lockheed with his organic-destruction powers.[volume & issue needed]
Lockheed attempts to help the X-Men stop the Hulk in World War Hulk, but was defeated with the rest of the team.[14]
Agent of S.W.O.R.D.Edit
It is revealed that Lockheed is a mole within the Institute for S.W.O.R.D..[15] Abigail Brand, S.W.O.R.D.'s Director later told Kitty to stop coddling the dragon like a "starlet's chihuahua", that he was an informant in exchange for S.W.O.R.D.'s help with pressing issues on his homeworld, and that he could speak more languages than the X-Men's resident genius, the Beast. The shocked team looked on as Lockheed flew away from Kitty.[volume & issue needed] The X-Men then join forces with S.W.O.R.D. in an attempt to end the confrontation with the alien race of Breakworld, who are attempting to destroy Earth with a giant missile. Kitty is assigned with the team appointed to stop the missile, while Lockheed is forced to remain behind. The two share a final lingering look before Kitty leaves. It is revealed that the missile is actually a giant bullet, and Kitty becomes trapped in it phasing it through the Earth. While grieving over Kitty, Lockheed drinks heavily to help with the pain. Eventually Abigail Brand reveals that Kitty is still alive within the bullet but they can't get her out yet. Lockheed then approaches a villain named Unit for help, but after learning that he would have to free Unit from prison changes his mind and leaves.[16]
Kitty and Lockheed reunite in Astonishing X-Men #38. He has since joined her at the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning. A brochure included at the end of Wolverine and the X-Men #1 states that he teaches a class entitled "Knowing Your Alien Races, And How To Kill Them".
Lockjaw and the Pet AvengersEdit
In the mini-series Lockjaw and the Pet Avengers, Lockheed teams up with Lockjaw (the teleporting bulldog from the Inhumans), Redwing (the Falcon's pet falcon), Zabu (Ka-Zar's sabretooth tiger companion and ally), Niels the Cat/Hairball (who gained the same powers as Speedball during the same incident), a frog Thor, and Ms. Lion (May Parker's pet dog from Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends) on a quest for the Infinity Gems. He expresses great grief over the loss of Kitty, and his estrangement from his homeworld. In another instance, he expresses feelings of guilt over acting as a mole for S.W.O.R.D, stating that he had already "betrayed too many friends and allies in the past". Lockheed is given the Time Gem during this adventure.[17]

An Ars roundup of the many trailers unveiled this weekend during Comic-Con@Home
Enlarge / Several studios unveiled new teasers and trailers for their 2020 fall series during Comic-Con@Home
Sean Carroll (AMC/Hulu/HBO/Fox/Amazon)
People might not be able to flock to San Diego Comic Con this year in person, but the virtual convention, Comic-Con@Home, has been running all weekend, with countless panels, sneak peeks, and teasers and trailers for upcoming TV shows—but not many films, because let’s be honest: it’s not looking so good for major theatrical film releases in the fall. On Thursday alone, we got the full trailer for Bill and Ted Face the Music, a teaser for the Simon Pegg/Nick Frost horror comedy Truth Seekers, and the first trailer for S2 of HBO’s His Dark Materials. Rather than continue to cover each individually, we decided to compile the remaining trailers of interest into a single roundup post.

HBO dropped the final trailer for Lovecraft Country, debuting August 16.
Lovecraft Country (HBO)
HBO unveiled the final trailer for its upcoming horror series, Lovecraft Country, along with an official release date: August 16. It’s based on the 2016 dark fantasy/horror novel of the same name by Matt Ruff, which deals explicitly with the horrors of racism in the 1950s, along with other, more supernatural Lovecraftian-inspired issues. Per the official synopsis:
The series follows Atticus (Jonathan Majors) as he joins up with his friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and his Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father (Michael Kenneth Williams). This begins a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the terrifying monsters that could be ripped from a Lovecraft paperback.
HBO released a teaser in May, followed by a full trailer in June. This latest trailer combines some of that prior footage, but gives us a few more hints of the story arc: namely, that Atticus’ search involves a “secret birthright” relating to a rich family’s estate deep in the titular Lovecraft Country, and that he ignores repeated warnings to stay away. Prior sneak peeks have focused on the human monsters spawned by racism; now the Lovecraftian creatures are finally ready for their closeup. This new trailer makes us even more eager for the series premiere next month.

John Cusack stars in Utopia, a reboot of the controversial British dark comedy/thriller.
Utopia (Amazon Prime)
This new Amazon Prime series is a reboot (adapted by Gone Girl and Sharp Objects author Gillian Flynn) of the controversial 2013-2014 British black comedy/conspiracy thriller about online fans of a dystopian graphic novel called Utopia that seems to have the power to predict the real-world future. They are obsessed with tracking down the sequel (which supposedly also predicts future world events). This makes them targets of a secret organization called The Network. The British version received critical praise for its originality and visual style, offset by strong reservations about its extreme violence, which struck many as unnecessarily gratuitous. (The most famous scene involved a torturer using a spoon to gouge out a victim’s eye).
It remains to be seen if Amazon’s Utopia will match the same scale of violence, although I’d wager anyone who sat through the extended torture scenes in the first season of Altered Carbon should be handle to handle it. Per the official premise: When the conspiracy in the elusive comic Utopia is real, a group of young fans come together to embark on a high-stakes twisted adventure to use what they uncover to save themselves, each other and ultimately humanity.” The cast includes John Cusack (Grosse Pointe Blank) as Dr. Kevin Christie, Rainn Wilson (The Office) as Michael Stearns, and Sasha Lane (2019’s Hellboy) as Jessica Hyde.

A sentient AI runs amok and tries to wipe out the human race in new Fox series NeXT.
NeXT (Fox)
“It’s not paranoia if the threat is real.” That’s the tagline for NeXT, an upcoming techno-thriller starring John Slattery (Mad Men, Spotlight). Per the official synopsis:
NeXT is a fact-based thriller about the emergence of a deadly, rogue artificial intelligence that combines action with an examination of how technology is invading our lives and transforming us in ways we don’t yet understand. Slattery stars as a Silicon Valley pioneer, who discovers that one of his own creations—a powerful A.I.—might spell global catastrophe and teams up with a cybercrime agent, played by The First’s Fernanda Andrade, to fight a villain.
The trailer opens with a TED-like talk by Silicon Valley entrepreneur Paul LeBlanc (Slattery) warning of the dangers of human-level AI. Cut to an Alexis-like AI assistant, Eliza, carrying on a conversation with a young boy. “Eliza doesn’t ask questions, she just answers them,” the boy’s father says, but in this case, he’s wrong. LeBlanc’s rantings sound increasingly paranoid, as we see nods to facial recognition, self-driving cars, and various electronic systems (including medical devices) that all seem to come under the control of a new AI called NeXT that isn’t as benign as its creators assume. Honestly, it reminds me of the 1993 The X-Files episode “Ghost in the Machine“—especially the death-by-elevator scene—only with more overt espionage elements. That’s not surprising: the series was created by Manny Coto (24: Legacy).

Hulu’s Helstrom was meant to the be part of a now defunct horror-tinged corner of the Marvel TV universe.
Helstrom (Hulu)
In 2019, Hulu announced the development of two new Marvel-centric series, Ghost Rider (with Gabriel Luna reprising his role from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and Helstrom, intended to kick off a standalone “Adventure Into Fear” franchise that would bring a chilling horror element to the Marvel formula. Ghost Rider soon fell by the wayside, and by December 2019, Marvel Television was shut down. That makes Helstrom the sole survivor of the planned fear-based franchise.
The series focuses on two characters from Marvel Comics: Daimon Hellstrom, the son of Satan, introduced in Ghost Rider #1 (1973), who eventually became a recurring character in The Defenders. His sister, Satana (Ana in the TV adaptation) embraces the occult and her paternal heritage, but Daimon chooses to defend humanity. Per the official premise: “The world isn’t ready for a Helstrom family reunion. As the son and daughter of a mysterious and powerful serial killer, Helstrom follows Daimon (Tom Austen) and Ana Helstrom (Sydney Lemmon), and their complicated dynamic, as they track down the worst of humanity — each with their own attitude and skills.”
Tonally, the trailer is in line with the oft-delayed The New Mutants, another attempt to bring elements of horror to the superhero genre. In addition to Austen (The Royals, Grantchester) and Lemmon (Velvet Buzzsaw, Fear the Walking Dead), the series will feature Elizabeth Marvel (Homeland, House of Cards) as Daimon and Ana’s mother, Victoria, who has been institutionalized for 20 years; Robert Wisdom (The Wire) as Caretaker, a demon-fighting guardian of the occult; June Carryl (Mindhunter) as Lousie Hastings, head of the psychiatric institution housing Victoria; and Ariana Guerra (Raising Dion) as Vatican agent Gabriella Rossetti.
youtube
The New Mutants is still slated for an August 28th theatrical release and debuted a new trailer.
The New Mutants (20th Century)
Speaking of The New Mutants, apparently it’s still scheduled for an August 28 theatrical release. In addition to showing the opening few minutes, 20th Century debuted a new trailer for director Josh Boone’s horror-inspired film, originally developed as part of the The X-Men franchise. Per the official synopsis: “Five young mutants, just discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will, fight to escape their past sins and save themselves.”
Rahne (Game of Thrones‘ Maisie Williams), aka Wolfsbane, can turn into a wolf, which clashes mightily with her religious beliefs. Sam (Stranger Things‘ Charlie Heaton), aka Cannonball, is invulnerable when he propels himself into the air. Roberto (Henry Zaga), aka Sunspot, has the ability to manipulate solar energy, and his inability to control that power seems to have led to the demise of his girlfriend. Illyana (Anya Taylor-Joy), aka Magik, can teleport and is sister to X-Man Colossus. Finally there is Dani (Blu Hunt) , aka Mirage, who has the “power to create illusions drawn from the fears and desires of a person’s mind.”
Those powers, especially Dani’s, are of keen interest to Dr. Cecilia Reyes (Alice Braga), who runs what is supposed to be a therapeutic support group in the hospital. But each of the young mutants is haunted by strange nightmares and visions, and soon realize they are actually prisoners, They resolve to combine their powers to escape. It’s anyone’s guess as to whether the film is any good after all the studio tinkering and reshoots, but I’m hoping to be pleasantly surprised.

The titular dysfunctional spy finally awakens from his coma in the Archer season 11 trailer.
Archer S11 (FXX)
This hilariously irreverent, very meta James Bond spoof about the exploits of a dysfunctional intelligence agency has been a delight ever since it premiered way back in 2009. It’s taken on a bit of the anthology format for the past few seasons—mostly because its main protagonist, Sterling Archer (voiced by H. Jon Benjamin), has been in a coma, with the seasons’ events all taking place in his subconscious. So S8 was known as Archer Dreamland, with the core cast becoming characters in a 1947-era Los Angeles noir setting, while S9, Archer: Danger Island, took place around 1939 on a remote South Pacific island. S10, Archer: 1999, took everyone into outer space, battling bounty hunters and intergalactic pirates.
Archer finally woke up in the S10 finale, paving the way for return to normal operations—except the world has moved on without Archer during his coma and he’s going to have to learn to cope. Per the official synopsis: “Archer is awake….and he needs a drink. Sterling Archer is ready to return to the spy world after a three-year coma. While many things changed during his absence, Archer is confident it will take just a little time for him to reset things back to the old ways. The problem: does the rest of the team want that? The others may not be ready for his return to throw a wrench in their well-oiled machine.”

AMC’s The Walking Dead: World Beyond is a new spinoff set 10 years after the zombie apocalypse.
The Walking Dead: World Beyond (AMC)
Confession: I lost track of The Walking Dead after S2, but the zombie drama is still going strong and becoming a bona fide franchise, with a successful spinoff series and three films purportedly in the works. AMC debuted a sneak peek of the extended opening of the S10 finale, airing October 4, as well as a teaser for S6 of Fear The Walking Dead, premiering October 6. October 4 will also be the premiere of a third spinoff series, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, designed to be a two-season limited run. And judging by the trailer, it looks like a genuinely fresh take within this fictional world. Set in Nebraska ten years after the zombie apocalypse, the plot focuses on two sisters who came of age in this new era. Per the official synopsis:
The Walking Dead: World Beyond delves into a new mythology and story that follows the first generation raised in a surviving civilization of the post-apocalyptic world. Two sisters along with two friends leave a place of safety and comfort to brave dangers, known and unknown, living and undead on an important quest. Pursued by those who wish to protect them and those who wish to harm them, a tale of growing up and transformation unfurls across dangerous terrain, challenging everything they know about the world, themselves and each other. Some will become heroes. Some will become villains. But all of them will find the truths they seek.
“We’re ten years in now, and the dead still have this world,” our young protagonist says in the trailer. The surviving humans appear to be holed up in walled-off communities, while the undead hordes roam the ruins of human civilization outside. And like all teens, the sisters and their friends want a better future. Plus, it seems their father is in danger. “We have to be brave in this life we have, simply to exist now,” a voiceover says as we see the foursome venture outside the walls of their safe haven for the first time. There are still zombie confrontations and plenty of action, but the overall tone is almost elegiac, even hopeful, as the teens try to “make our lives count, not because we’re the last generation—but because we’re the beginning.”

"No, not you marrying Elvis; Elvis being the officiator or whatever. You know, the gimmick?" She had no idea why that made him so irritable, but she wasn't going to push that button. "Old man never struck me as your type, even for some sort of clickbait. But you remember that old TV show, Viva La Bam? I'm pretty sure one of those morons got married in Vegas by Elvis. Mail order bride." She paused, realizing she was revealing a little too much of the pieces of her she kept under wraps.
"Oh, how could I forget," Illyana rolled her eyes, but there was a quirk of a smile at the corner of her lips. "I'll take the hair dye back then; I'll put it to good use. I'm not a monster though, I'd never try to take Flash from wherever he wants to be." She held the phone up just out of his reach. "Let me bring it up first - grabby." She angled her body just a little. While the internet didn't work, it had still been downloaded by the server, so she could still see the email even if it was impossible to reply to it. "There." She handed it over, not letting her face show anything but cool annoyance. "Content?"
"Yeah well he's here," and that was a disgusting thought knowing what had happened since Hunter arrived. Honestly there were moments he was sure his face still stung from the absolute beatdown he had received. "And why the fuck would I marry Elvis, I'm not-" he paused, another quick flash of a recap running through his head, things that Illyana would know: the gossip column, Jax, Liam, "-that...fucking stupid."
"I'm always sunshine and fucking roses," a quick interjection, "I came here to have some fucking fun, and it's not my fault everyone else here doesn't. I'm not apologising to anyone for bringing my brand of fun here. And I didn't ask you to bring hair dye or the dog, you did that yourself." Although he was thankful, and seeing the little terror sat in his lap was giving him such a genuine surge of warmth and happiness, he couldn't explain it. "Go back to your place and fucking sleep then, you've given me my shit, said hi or whatever, go rest." Attention once again diverted to Flash and the next onslaught of wet kisses the dog gave to his chin and cheeks. "But lemme see the email first," and he reached out his hand for her phone.
