Based on any criteria: whoever was the most fun to fight, the coolest or most clever design, the hardest battle, general vibes, etc.
(Personal opinion below)
Shadow temple may have traumatized me but Bongo bongo is my silly. The fight was difficult to figure out early on but its name and mannerisms are so funny to me. It’s just hitting imaginary bongos with its silly ghost hands (and knocking the life out of Link but whatever)

for the character ask 002 Bobby Nash
(I love how you're fighting with polls, I also hate that you can't delete them)
character ask game
reply threads are so great tumblr can you make a fucking x button for polls
anyway
version two — give me a character and i will tell you:
how I feel about this character:
i need to fuck that old man
and then also hold him tight and keep him safe because he needs stability and love in his life and let him know that he never needed to be perfect or even great and the pain he suffered wasn’t a punishment it was just life and it’s not his time yet
all the people I ship romantically with this character:
it’s athena it’s just athena who else no one could beat THE athena grant they’re soulmates i love them they’re so perfect each other THE married couple of all time even if i wanted to ship anyone else i couldn’t because she’s literally right there and nobody else matters
my non-romantic OTP for this character:
will never not hate rockmond for taking away bobby and michael bestieism from me they were perfect together husbands in law besties god brought them together because god can be kind sometimes and by god i mean tim there was always support between the two of them and they were so good at communicating their issues and urghhh just every scene between the two of them is amazing
also him and the kids like the firehouse field trip and all his moments with may and always caring about them ugh i love this family if they don’t give me more moments next season ill fight someone
my unpopular opinion about this character:
i think the only one i have remotely is that i don’t want him to retire yet, i think they absolutely could do well with it (especially if that one food truck idea gets followed through ppeawepleaseoleasepleawepleaseeapsleapslewapslw) but ill just miss him as captain even though i know his attitude towards his job isn’t like athena’s so it might happen but ill be sad because change is hard
one thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:
um his fucking house didn’t burn down
no bc i get it but oh my fucking god BRING THE GRANT NASH HOUSE BACK TO ME TIM YOU ARE EVIL AND YOU BETTER BE READY WHEN I FIND YOU
also my previous answer before season seven probably would’ve been more details on his childhood but guess what tim hates me and he wants to make both me and my husband suffer through the horrors
my OTP:
me and bobby
lol no it’s bathena of course it is, they are such a beautiful couple and i’m on my rewatch and “thanks for coming to get me” “always” never fails to make me a believer in true love like it is insane how much love you can pack into one word they’ve always got each other’s backs and they are just soooo in love they’re everything to me
my crossover ship:
once again no one because i’m not big into crossovers unless real life counts then it’s me and bathena
a headcanon fact:
i like to think after he retires he’ll be a lot more involved in charity work and whatnot, like he’d probably still help a lot with the 118 fundraisers and then do more with his local church. he and buck would probably make homemade meals and donate them to a shelter idk i just think it’s cute. and the firefam kids help too because kindness and volunteer hours

Hi, I hope you're doing well ! For the character ask game, what about Momoi Satsuki with 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 12, 16 & 23 ?
thank you for the questions !! finally able to finish this since i was a bit busy !!
everything will go under the cut because i ended up writing like a very mini essay
1. Why do you like or dislike this character?
she is my daughter !! i rlly love the love she has to offer to the world !! and most importantly, i love her passion for basketball as well -- i rlly enjoyed how integral she was to the teams she was a manager to due to her data collecting, and how those analytical abilities made her a force to be reckoned with !! in conclusion, that's my girl !!
2. Favorite canon thing about this character?
ok i do feel like i answered that in the last question, so i'll add that im absolutely so endeared by the fact she nicknames many people :] honestly kagamin and midorin are amongst my fav nicknames from her... think kagami and midorima won there
7. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like?
i don't have too much experience with the fandom -- since i got into knb in mid 2022 and rlly have only interacted with a few ppl on tumblr and my friends -- but from what ive seen, i rlly love the amount of love ive seen !! most people ive seen like her a lot and support her !! even those in other fandoms (looking at my beloved a3! fandom the most) -- when momoi's on polls (ex. @/girlygirltournament, @/girls-in-love-bracket, @/pinkandbluebracket) there's always a lot of support for her !!
quick fun fandom thing -- i do want to say that in the pink&blue poll, an alliance was made with a3! fans because both a3! fans and knb fans were super supportive of each other and had a fun competition and ever since then... they have been brother in arms 2 me...
and of course my favorite is still @/pinkhairswagtourney where we arranged for muku (the a3! pink haired boy ever, i even have a little can badge of him) and momoi to tie and be a team together !! and then they won the whole tournament... being able to beat madoka :D and i like to think it is bc of our shared love for charas
(also to anyone reading this, i think you guys should vote for a3! charas when u see them on polls)
THIS GOT REALLY LONG but essentially, momoi is very loved from what ive seen and even to those outside of the knb fandom and that is smth i like a lot :>
8. What's something the fandom when it comes to this character that you despite?
again, i don't really interact with fandom, but i can guess (based on most fandom patterns) that there are people who likely ignore her in favor of the other (most likely male) charas and that'd make me :(
12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?
i like to think she and takao will eventually become besties and have a very fun group with midorima and kise
16. What's your least favorite ship for this character?
i assume this question excludes ships you would have no real opinion on (so probably some pairs where they dont interact that much -- even tho i have shipped charas who have very little interactions it all depends on the vibes...)
anyways that makes it a tough question for me !! i personally do prefer aomine and momoi to be platonic, but like. i get it. theyre childhood friends who love each other a lot. inseparable... their bond is just very special to me...
this ended up being me talking abt how i like aomine and momoi's bond but i think that's ok even if i basically didnt answer the question because like. after writing all of this im like... yeah its not my least favorite but i already committed to writing this much
23. Favorite picture of this character?
THIS IS SO HARD... i love so many momois in da world... but ill choose this one for now because she looks soooo happy in it !! look at her smile, she is everything to me...

survey #205
Would you rather have another job? I don't have a job to begin with.
Did you ever live in a house with more than one story? No.
What room of your home do you spend most time in? The spare room, which I tend to just call "my room."
Have you ever given yourself a tattoo? No.
Do you own any clothes you wouldn’t wear in front of your mother? No.
Why did you last take pain medication? Menstrual cramps.
Do you drive an electric car? My mom's car is an ancient white Kia with the bumper held on by zipties and duct tape. No.
Do you like facial hair on guys or do you prefer the clean-shaven look? It depends on the guy. Some look better (to me) with it, some not so much.
Who was your first celebrity crush? Jesse McCartney.
Who is your current celebrity crush? it's so embarrassing to say Richard Kruspe he could be my fucking dad he has kids older than me help
Are you good with kids? I definitely don't think so, but I've been told I'm better than I think I am with them.
Do you have your national flag hanging up anywhere outside your house? ew no
Do you look older or younger than you actually are? I've heard quite a bit younger. The last time I was in the hospital (I was like, 26?), my peers thought I was a teenager.
When is the next time you’ll be up on stage? Probably never.
What was the last show that you watched a full episode of? Naked and Afraid with Mom.
Were you ever a boy or girl scout? As a child, yes.
Do you take your medications in the morning or at night? I have meds I have to take both in the morning and before bed + with dinner.
Do you like thrift stores? YES!!!!
Do you know anyone who has ten cats? My sister's parents-in-law own WELL over ten, they have an infestation inside and outside.
Have you ever had a cat? I grew up with cats; as a matter of fact, we also had an outdoor infestation growing up. I hope that doesn't make anyone think ill of my parents, obviously that is a very serious issue that I now have very strong feelings about, but my mom didn't want to devastate us kids by taking them away. This eventually did happen when I was a teenager, and it was one of the most heartbreaking things that has happened to me. The cats were there one school morning, gone when I got home because our neighbor complained. It's because of this history that I try to treat Ashley's MIL with understanding and compassion regarding this topic, but it's hard when the cats are suffering, too.
Have you ever had a dog? Yes, we've had a good few. We have a rescued chihuahua now, she's a sweetheart.
Have you ever any other kind of animal? Oh yes, loads other. Guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, mice, rats, ball pythons, a Chinese water dragon, iguana, a rabbit, fish, hermit crabs, possibly more I'm forgetting. Pets have always been in my life.
Have you ever had a pet rock? I suppose possibly as a child, but not to my memory, and certainly never seriously.
What were you voted in the senior class polls? I wasn't voted anything.
Do you organize your clothes by color? No.
Do you have any significantly older siblings? Yeah, both my parents have children from relationships they had prior to each other.
Which parent do you feel the most affection for? My mom, pretty easily. She raised me and has provided for me unending, even into my "I should be taking care of myself" age. My dad did not raise me.
Who do you care about the most? My mom and Girt, I just care in different ways.
Do you tend to speed when you drive? I don't drive.
Do you get bored with relationships quickly? No.
Do you have an online game that you play often? Yeah, World of Warcraft.
How long does it take you to normally take a shower? In the shower itself, not even 10 minutes. I don't understand long showers, get yourself clean and get out.
Was the last person you kissed younger or older than you? Older.
Do you always wear your seatbelt? Yes, without fail. I don't play about this.
Would you rather watch a movie, watch a TV show, or watch a YouTube video? YouTube video, easy. I'm always doing that.
Do your pets chase after bugs? Yeah, Roman especially.
When you get married, who will be the maid of honor/best man? My mom.
When you go to McDonalds, what drink do you usually get? Coke.
What was the last thing you threw up? Doritos lmfao
Are you someone’s best friend? My boyfriend's.
Would your childhood self be disappointed? She'd be devastated and I can't stand thinking about it.
Can you lift your significant other (your best friend if you’re single)? No, I'm not strong enough to lift like, any adult.
What’s your opinion on the legalization of weed? Legalize it.
Have you ever hit a girl? I hit my sister once as a kid.
What was your New Year’s resolution? To progress as a freelance photographer. I hope by the end of the year, I'll be able to have an actual product, even just ONE print up for sale.
Do you like watching music videos? Only Rammstein's, lol. I've seen all theirs.
Are you happy with your looks? Big fat nope.
Do you have any pets who will bite anyone else out there, besides you? No.
Are you someone who really likes to cook? What’s your favorite meal? No. I WISH I liked cooking, or especially baking. It's something I wanna be into, I'm just... not.
Anal sex, yay or nay? I have never tried this and never plan to, I am very Not into butt stuff.
Have you ever dated a fat person? Once or twice, depending on if you count one experience as truly "dating."
What is truly attractive to you? Compassion, for one.
You see a spider web in the corner of your room. What do you do? Leave it be.
Name a song that reminds you of a past relationship: "Another Life" by Motionless In White can be very painful to me with how aggressively it reminds me of Jason.
Do you think anyone hates you? I can name one person who probably does.
What do you think your last ex would say about you? Oh, nothing nice at all.
Do you still talk to the first person you fell in love with? No.
Have you ever been punched? No. I'd like things to stay that way lol
Do you care about what’s happening in other countries? No good person can not care. I mean that. No one who can pride themselves in being a "good" person can look at evil transpiring outside of their home and NOT care.
Do you believe in the afterlife? I believe there's some spiritual plane, but I don't pretend to know the details of it. I do believe in the human soul, but I do know I don't believe in some traditional heaven and hell BS.
What is your greatest achievement? Still being alive, like that's deadass my answer.
What kind of bottled water do you drink? We don't drink bottled water; we have two filters we use instead.
What’s the most you’ve ever lost gambling? I don't gamble.
Have you ever waited in line overnight for something? No, I do not have that sort of patience for literally anything.
Do you watch porn? No, the idea really doesn't appeal to me.
If you don’t, do you have a moral reasoning behind that decision? No. The porn industry is capable of being extremely harmful, but I don't believe all porn is made immorally. I'm just not into watching random people bang.
Do/did you ever attend church regularly? I went semi-regularly as a kid, but not by my will. My mom forced it. I would literally cry if she decided we were going after Sunday school was out.
Do you have a godmother/godfather/both? Not to my knowledge.
Do you watch Supernatural? I haven't watched it in many years. Only with Jason for a while. I think we stopped after (SPOILER) Castiel became god.
Do you go to a firework show every 4th of July? No, I don't endorse the usage of fireworks.
Are you diabetic? No. I was pre-diabetic for a while, but the last time my A1C was checked, it was 100% normal so I am no longer considered pre-diabetic!
Are you allergic to gluten? No.
Are you lactose intolerant? No.
If you have shoplifted, are you afraid of getting in trouble? I've never shoplifted.
How long have you been single? (Or dating your current interest) Girt and I have been together for two and a half years.
Do any famous people follow you on Twitter or Instagram? No way.
Name all the people you know that you’ve seen today. My mom and her mom's widower. He was driving through and stayed the night here before setting off again.
Have you ever read a book about a character in a psych ward? Not to my recollection.
Have you ever been in a mental hospital as a patient? Somewhere around seven times, I lost count years ago.
Do you take birth control pills? Yes.
Do you like soy sauce? No, it's gross.
What’s the name of the most recent baby a friend had? Harper.
Would you ever wear real fur? No.

oh I made a poll about this ages ago! I should see how it's doing! in the meantime I want to procrastinate writing my dissertation for a bit because I have been rotating this ethics question in my mind since I finished the podcast.
OK SO I think you can conceptualize this as two distinct decisions. first: release the fears or not? This is a decision about risk, choosing between 100% probability of a terrible option and ???% probability of a a worse(???) option. When you know the probability of and how good/bad each outcome is, there's a mathematically correct answer -- at least in situations without moral aspects, like having people play a betting game in a lab. That would be a question like: do you pick a 100% chance of getting $100 (expected value: 1*100) or an X chance of getting $1000 (EV: x*1000)? If X > 10%, the more risky option is the better choice, because the expected value is higher. In the real world, this would be a question like: do you pick a definite chance of being sad/lonely by quarantining? Or do you risk the smaller chance of a worse outcome, like getting seriously ill or dying yourself, or passing the virus to someone who does?
Obviously, people don't always make the mathematically ideal choices, and people vary in how risk-averse they are. It also depends on how you present the question: "do you pick a 90% chance of saving your world?" sounds a lot better than "do you pick a 10% chance of destroying the multiverse?"
What makes the TMA finale problem interesting is that you have to guess A) the likelihood of the fears affecting other universes and B) how bad it would be if they did. Would they be able to do nothing? Creep at the edges? Or start more fearpocalypses? In some universes or all of them? Inevitably or only if something similar plays out again? We have very little information, and I think that drawing different conclusions from the little information we know is a big component of why people (in universe and in meta) make different choices. Looking back at the 199 transcript, I think the group in order from assuming highest probability/worst consequences to lowest is Georgie, Jon, Basira, Martin, then Melanie.
So whether or not to release the fears is a choice more about risk, and then if you say don't release them, the next choice is more about perceived responsibility. It's a classic trolley problem: pull the lever so the train only hits one person (accelerate the end), or don't touch the lever so the train hits six people (just don't interfere anymore with the fearpocalypse). So there's an option that reduces the harm, but arguably the individual is more responsible for that harm. Basira definitely takes that view (the deontological one) when she's immediately like what the actual fuck Jon that's not an option. Georgie seems to think this is worse than releasing the fears, and then that leaves Jon as the only one who doesn't want to release the fears.
He takes the more utilitarian/consequentialist approach and wants to reduce the amount of suffering. But instead of thinking pulling the lever doesn't make him more responsible for that death, it's more like he believes he's already pulled so many levers already that he can't become more responsible for it. But it's also not surprising that he changes his mind when Martin confronts him in the panopticon. It's a lot harder to look someone in the eye and pull the lever to hit them, even if abstractly that's the less bad option.
tried doing this around when tma actually ended but it's hard making people click links 😔

Ah, Oops, that's on me! It's painfully obvious, in hindsight, but the "playable character" part threw me off. My bad! That makes a whole lot more sense. Ough.
Record 5 has sent me through the five stages of grief in the span of that simple hour and I just have to wonder why this game is a hidden gem?? When it's this ridiculously good and expansive and thought out???? At least for English-speaking fans, unsure of the proper Japanese community. It's probably because of it not being officially translated, which is always a shame.
CoE gives you mental illnesses you thought you couldn't have <3 and I am determined to drag as many friends down with me as I humanly possibly can. If they'll allow me. I don't think I'm going to be successful, but I will certainly try!!
I will contact you tomorrow!! Ish!!! Thank you once again!
O u g h those songs are good and they fit. At this point I could make entirely separate playlists for characters and dynamics. It's filling up my brain at alarming speeds and I'm having so much fun doing it.
The best type of brainrot is the one that haunts you every step of the way from the moment you started the descent. CoE is no exception <3
I have also had some time to try and process and!! There's a detail I noticed??? And surely this have been noticed by most others but I feel like talking about it in case I made wrong connections or there's more about it others noticed.
It's the vague feeling that Atou mimics Hajime's "keep eyes closed unless making a specific expression" habit? I haven't gone back and checked on how often it happens, but it struck me and it's not quite leaving because it feels like it could make sense as to why for obvious reasons. I don't think anyone else but them actually keep their eyes closed like that as their neutral expression like those two do.
And on the subject of Hajime's expressions: his "are you fucking kidding me?" confused/irritated look every time Seodore does anything in Record 5 is absolutely golden.
- 8:11 anon
YOURE FINE DW!!
COE is such a hidden gem fr!! I Think it's in part that the youtube TL is so new (they only started uploading about 2 years ago) and the fact that there's no playable eng TL definitely does not help... I have been doing my part in the COE propagandizing o7 (have gotten several people to play it)
there is a substantial Korean community (there is a playable KR version) and i've seen a lot of Chinese fans as well! I've seen some Japanese fans too, and our little english corner is very close knit! . It's very interconnected, which is nice. Everyone talks to each other <3
COE has given me so much mental illness <3 it spreads very much through word of mouth, so YES PROPAGANDIZE!! I'll be around tomorrow so no worries :D
They talk about it a bit in the QNA, but yeah Atou started closing his eyes like that at some point, and he says there wasn't a particular reason for it (though hajime does wonder if it's because of something else). you should read the full qna! it's so cute, i cant believe i forgot to link it earlier.
Hajime's expressions are SO GOOD!!! He and Seodore are fascinating honestly congrats to seodore for winning worst dad in the polls... he really earned it SDAKLJADSLKJADS

Each year we take a close look at the prompts for Sledgefu Week, for those who may be stuck for ideas or not quite sure about what the prompts could entail. Below the readmore are all seven prompts, as well as a short write-up exploring what they mean and some ideas to help get the creative juices going. Enjoy!!
Sickfic
This is a really popular and well-known fanfic trope that I feel probably needs little explanation, but I’ll write a little bit about it anyway! It essentially covers fic where one character is ill and the other cares for them -- it could encompass any kind of illness at all, (including chronic illnesses) and there’s a lot of room to get creative with it. You can go for angst, hurt/comfort, or fluff: it’s just a really good general prompt that I think works nicely to kick the week off!
It suits for Sledgefu pretty well, considering Snafu’s canon mild hypochondria, as well as the fact that Eugene’s dad is a doctor. It could be fun to lean into it: make Eugene play doctor for an actually-sick Snafu, and it could be just as fun to subvert it! There’s really endless options for canon fic: shrapnel wounds turned bad, heat-sickness, seasickness, illness from bad food or bad water or any kind of tropical disease you can think of (malaria is a big one!). You could make one of them (or both) a medic; you could genderswap them and write the gay field nurse fic this fandom sorely needs. And of course if you choose to branch out into modern AU you can begin to think of what might afflict them outside of a war setting: has Eugene been working too much and come down with a cold? Are they hungover, and need mutual care (and lots of takeout)? A lot of the time sickfic focuses on one character doing the comforting and the other character feeling unwell, but there’s nothing to say they can’t both be feeling shitty! I think we say this every year but there’s really no rules at all, you do whatever you feel inspired to do. With Sickfic, just be mindful to tag anything that others might be affected by eg. vomiting, blood, needles, etc.
Tarot
I feel like Tarot is pretty well-known to the Sledgefu fandom, or at least to those who like to write Snafu or his family a little witchy. In case you just have a vague idea of what Tarot actually is and what its purpose or origins are, I’ll explain it as concisely as I can! Tarot decks started life in Europe as playing cards, but eventually began to be used for divination. It’s made up of four suits, or the Minor Arcana, (Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles) as well as a twenty-two card Major Arcana (the imagery of which you’re probably very familiar with). Commonly, tarot decks and tarot reading is used as a means of communicating with the higher self, deities, or with the universe. They can be used as a way to see the future, answer questions, or to give/receive advice. There are different ways of reading them too, depending on how one lays out the cards: I don’t want to make this too wordy, but if you’re curious I encourage you to check out this site to learn more!
For writers, there’s a lot of places this prompt could take you! Probably the most obvious will be fortune teller fic; a classic. Lean into Snafu’s Louisiana roots and have him telling fortunes in the depths of the French Quarter, or go against the grain and have Eugene reading cards and palms and tea leaves as a practice passed down through his family. Or maybe more casual: modern AU Sledgefu flirting through amateur tarot readings with a deck picked up from a junk shop. If you read Tarot and have a connection to it, you can express that through writing! It’s a pretty open-ended prompt, especially if you consider some of the meanings of the cards; you could even write a story inspired by that! The Hermit: Snafu withdrawing, leaving Eugene on the train to spend the next few months in solitude, working through things. The Moon: Snafu and Eugene hitting a rough patch, hiding things from each other. The opportunities really become endless once you start taking the readings of the cards into account! And for visual artists, this must be such a fun prompt: I feel like it’s so a visually rich, whether you’re re-drawing the cards to encompass Snafu and Eugene within them, or making a collage based around some of the things mentioned above: fortune tellers shops, witches cottages, etc.
Trinket
Every Sledgefu Week we tend to have a couple prompts that are a little more open to interpretation, and this year’s ‘Trinket’ is one of those. It might be difficult to try and think of something to base a whole fic or piece of art around, but we really encourage you to let your imagination run wild! There’s already some great trinkets in the show itself: Eugene’s ring, the lighter that Gunny Haney gave him, Snafu’s stolen gold teeth, or their dog tags. Think of small, special objects that you might have: what imbues them with comfort or meaning? What makes you love them? You could have Eugene giving Snafu his ring, or have Eugene musing over war and death and loss while smoking a cigarette lit by his lighter. If you’re into Modern AUs, how could these objects carry through to modern day? Once you start thinking about it, the ideas start rolling in. Feel free to invent special trinkets for them: or maybe trinkets that they hate and want to get rid of, trinkets that remind them of bad times. Trinkets that remind them of each other, or family, or war. So much meaning can be held in the things we own, and I think it’s such a lovely concept to explore!
Crossover
So this prompt was born from the sheer number of suggestions we had for various movie, TV, and book AUs. We didn’t want to put them all to the poll and risk a lot of you feeling disappointed over the one you wanted not being selected, so thought it’d work best to condense them into a ‘Crossover’ prompt so everyone could do whatever they liked. So this is a very very broad one! It would be impossible for me to really go through the prompt and highlight some things that you could do for it, because you can really do anything you want to! Anything! It encompasses movies, video games, TV, books, musicals... if something tells a story, you can do a crossover. So if there’s ever been a film/book/etc. AU you wanted to do for Sledgefu Week but couldn’t quite get it to match the prompts, now is the time!
Vacation
A pretty self explanatory prompt, and one that I think can appeal to people who prefer canonverse and those who like modern AU too! Do you want to send Snafu and Eugene on the holiday of their dreams, or are they gonna be bickering in a gas station over who gets control of the map? Is Snafu gonna drive across a couple states to surprise Eugene by visiting? Is Eugene gonna do the same? There’s a lot of scenarios you can apply to the backdrop of them vacationing, and a lot of emotional journeys you can take them through! And for the canonverse crowd, you have the extra addition of letting them go have fun on an R&R, or taking a road trip post-war, visiting 1950s Paris... you can really do whatever you like!
Historical
This was another prompt like ‘Crossover’ that came from a lot of various suggestions that all boiled down to a similar thing: different historical events or periods. So like Crossover, I won’t linger too long on it (this post is long enough already) except just to say again: do whatever you’re inspired to do! There’s no rules here, you could even take everyone out of the Pacific and put them over in Germany: give them a different experience of war. In fact, you can do that with any war if you wanted to! Wanna do a M*A*S*H AU but made something else for Crossover? You could do it here! Want to put them in the 1920s? You got it. In the 1850s? Yeehaw, they’re cowboys now. 1969, Summer of Love? 1600s, make Snafu a prince? Literally the world is your oyster!
Horror
Past Sledgefu Week prompts have included things that could come under the horror umbrella (Supernatural, for example) but didn’t necessarily have to be made 'horrific’. For the ‘Horror’ prompt this year, we want to see frightening! Disquieting, uncomfortable; creations that either cross over with existing horror franchises, or lean on horrific things you come up with yourself. Horror movies, or TV shows, or books or podcasts or pieces of art all seek to elicit a sense of fear: this can be done by tapping into common phobias, or nightmares, those things which are universally and almost instinctively scary. We want to see things which lean into that, in whatever way you want to do it!
I’m no horror media expert (not by a long shot) but the opportunities for this prompt are really vast simply because horror has so many subgenres to work with. You could go gothic horror; Dracula, Frankenstein, Wuthering Heights (a personal favourite AU -- Eugene soaked out on the moors, searching for Heathcliff-Snafu? Divine). Or you could go to the opposite end of the spectrum: Jennifer’s Body AU, Final Girl AU -- there’s no set way to do horror, in fact you could even bring horror into canonverse if you don’t like AUs. Think the Terror: some unknown beast lurking beyond the borders of their camp on Pavuvu, or Okinawa. Or you could even take the prompt entirely literally and explore the horrors of war and the toll it takes on them both. Please don’t feel stuck into needing to do Scary: horror is about fear and revulsion and dread, and these feelings don’t necessarily need to come from a haunting! (This is also a prompt ripe for monsterfucking, just FYI).
                                                - - - - - - - - - -
So that’s the prompts for this year! They’re all really really great, and have a lot of potential to make some fantastic stuff :~) And to reiterate something I said right at the start, there are no rules here! I think every year we normally get at least one person unsure whether their idea will be okay for the prompt they’d like to make it for, so I just wanna say here: don’t second-guess yourself! As long as it can be linked back to the prompt in some way or another (can literally be the vaguest way possible) you’ll be absolutely fine. We don’t vet submissions at all, especially not for their content relating to the prompts. All we ask is that you remember to stay respectful in what you’re writing, and when the time comes to post it, you tag and warn appropriately :~)
On the subject of writing respectfully, we’d like to just take a moment to link the document on mindful writing re: race and gender that was made last year. Please take a look at it, even if you read it last year! It’s always good to keep these things at the front of your mind, as fandom is a community sport and we want to keep it fun and safe for everyone involved! So thank you if you’ve made it this far through this whole post, check out the doc, and enjoy the rest of the run-up to Sledgefu Week!

The Freedom of Expression, radio version - Ep 28, April 2016 - Opposition Party name change,  Madonna turning up late to own concert, Baseball players caught making illegal bets on games.
Kaoru introduces the shows concept, and then Joe. Joe tells Kaoru that he just had his 48th birthday the previous day, and Kaoru tells him he doesn't look 48. Joe expresses his wish to have someone to share his birthday with the following year (i.e. a girlfriend). Kaoru then reminds listeners about the appeal for a new jingle, and reads out the shows contact info.
They then introduce Dobashi. Joe tells Dobashi he looks tired, and asks if he is ok. Dobashi says he is tired. Hiranabe has been working him too hard. Kaoru says Hiranabe is quite popular with listeners. He even has female fans who call themselves 'Nabe gals/ナベギャル on twitter.
Dobashi's first news is that the main political  opposition party, The Democratic Party of Japan/Minshutō (DPJ) had merged with the Japan Innovation Party/Ishin no Tō (JIP), and announced thier new united party name to be The Democratic Party/Minshintō (DP). There were apparently many different name suggestions raised, as well as opinion polls carried out. Dobashi thinks its important to have a united opposition in the face of the Abe administration, but wonders how this will actually pan out. Kaoru wonders what these parties are all up to. It seems as if the party has just changed its name. In order to grab the attention of the people they need a striking manifesto or plan, which seems to be lacking here. Joe says the people still remember the last time the DPJ were briefly in power and performed badly. A simple name change won't make any difference to thier image. Dobashi mentions that the 3.11 Earthquake and tsunami happened during this short DPJ administration, so they still have quite a negative image in the eyes of the public. Joe says he has quite a few friends/aquaintances who are members of the DPJ, and sometimes goes out to eat with them. He thinks the Party's biggest weak point when they were briefly in power was that they had no idea how to control, or form relationships with the bureaucracy at Kasumigaseki (the Tokyo district which houses all of the government's cabinet offices). They were living in a kind of fantasy realm in thier heads, and presented no stand in the face of the bureaucracy. Then 3. 11 happened. Joe wonders if anything has changed about them since that time. Kaoru says he has felt no change at all about them, even with this new name. Do they think they will suddenly succeed just by changing their name?
Dobashi says it reminds him of radio/tv personality Kawakami Shinichiro (the topic of the previous show) who changed himself into 'Sean K', with nothing solid to back up his success otherwise. Kaoru says it must be tough for radio presenters now, with the increased scrutiny into thier history. Joe agrees, and says after this Sean K incident, he occasionally had to take time off due to illness, and was accused by some of feigning illness. They called him 'Joan K'.
Dobashi's next story is from the world of music, specifically that Madonna had appeared on stage 2 hours late at her scheduled concert in Brisbane, Australia, which was part of her world tour. The concert was due to start at 9pm, but she was still not on stage after 10pm. The concert eventually started at 11:22pm, and there was a lot of booing from the audience, though Madonna did apologize for the delay once she was on stage, and made a few excuses as to why she was late. She was also close to two hours late appearing on stage for her Japan leg of her tour. The three of them say it makes you wonder what she had been doing for two hours. Kaoru says there could be various reasons for the delay, such as the schedue not going to plan, problems with set up, or even idleness. However, he does recall one time Dir en grey appeared on stage 90 mins late at Osaka-jo Hall, around the time of thier debut. He explains that the background footage which they needed for thier show had not yet arrived, and they were told to wait until it did arrive. These were the days before the kind of email that we have now, you couldn't just send something over instantly. The footage was apparently on its way via the bullet train! Kaoru thinks the audience were probably annoyed. He doesn't remember whether any announcement was made informing the audience about the delay, but they might have just assumed the band were taking ages to do thier make up. Dir themselves didn't get into trouble, but the event planners etc did. Considering this, Kaoru suspects it might not be Madonna causing the delay herself, but some other factors may be at play behind the scenes.
Dobashi then brings up a certain Japanese artist know for idleness (in his words). Although no names are mentioned, this is refering to X Japan/Yoshiki, who's 2008 reunion concert had a two and a half hour starting delay. Again without mentioning names, Kaoru also mentions the time Yoshiki was late for one of his own Niconama broadcasts, which Kaoru was also a participant in, and they had to start the broadcast without him. Joe says he is quite good friends with Tamaki from the band Anzen Chitai, and he told him once that he had failed to attend a live tv broadcast because he was too busy song writing and he forgot about it. Joe says there can be many reasons why a person is late or doesn't turn up. Kaoru adds that reactions from others can also differ. Some people might think, 'Oh, with this guy it can't be helped', but others might be more unforgiving. Dobashi asks for more details about Yoshiki not turning up to the niconama broadcast. Kaoru says he eventually arrived and just apologized normally.
Next Kaoru reads out an email from a listener who is worried about Japanese baseball gaining a bad image after various troublesome  issues have arisen at the start of the new season, including the scandal of Yomiuri Giants players illegally betting with each other on games. Although he acknowledges this action is illegal in the eyes of the law, Kaoru wonders whether the players are really in the wrong, or whether the law is at fault. Regular people probably do the same thing when they go home to thier families during the new year, and it probably also raises motivation. He can't see how what the players are doing is much different. Joe says he thinks its dangerous to use the law to control the peoples' speculative spirit, because it even comes down to simple things like, 'If they get a home run, you buy dinner'. Its a basic human enjoyment, and needs to be approached carefully. Dobashi says that when betting starts to have a negative social impact, then its wrong, but there are actually a lot of legalised public gambling establishments operating in Japan, which is no different from other forms of gambling really. Kaoru suggests that in a similar sense, a kind of Baseball public lottery could be set up, to avoid any behind the scenes betting or gambling.
Kaoru finishes by saying that despite reading out this email, he won't be sending out a sticker, which Joe thinks is a bit sadistic. He then reminds listeners about the new jingle appeal, and briefly plugs his blog, dvd, single, and tour.
Songs - Dir en grey/304 goushitsu, hakushi no sakura, Skid Row/Wasted Time.

poll results:
31 people responded to the poll! here are the results (summary of each question and graphs below)
question 1: which games have you played?
the most played games are RE2R and RE3R - 27/31 respondents have played those two games
the least played game is RE3 - only 5/31 respondents have played that game
Tumblr media
question 2: which game is your favorite?
the most popular game is RE7 with 8 votes
the least popular games are RE1, RE2, RE3, RE5, RE3R, Revelations and Revelations 2 each with 0 votes
Tumblr media
question 3: who is your favorite character to play as?
the most popular character is leon with 9 votes
the least popular characters are carlos, helena, sherry, sheva, and chris each with 0 votes
Tumblr media
my thoughts:
i doubt everyone is interested in my thoughts so i'll put them down here.
my answers:
i have played RE1R, RE2R, RE3R, RE4R, RE6, RE7, RE8, RE0, Revelations, Revelations 2. I am currently trying to play RE5 but i hate it so much.
my favorite game that i have played is RE1R! I loved all the remakes tbh (even 3 remake)
I wish i had asked about least favorite games bc y'all know my answer is revelations bc i fucking hate that map
my favorite character to play as is jill! I do love playing as leon in RE2R and RE4R, so he would probably be my second choice. and I love playing as chris in RE1R (not as much as jill bc he's not the master of unlocking!!), but i hate playing as chris in RE5 and i think his part in RE8 is boring (even tho he's hot)
I was expecting RE4R to be the most played game so i am surprised that it is not. maybe it's the price that's deterring people or people just haven't gotten around to it yet? (if we include dlc i have spent 112 dollars on re4r so yeah it's an investment) i also expected more people to have played RE1R since it's so well-loved and you can get it at a much more reasonable price (i think i got it on sale for 5 bucks). I also assumed that RE7 and RE8 would have the same number of players since they have the same protagonist and 7 was well-liked so people who liked 7 would want to play 8. i'm realizing that maybe people have ps plus? RE7 is free if you have ps plus (just a fun fact in case you didn't know!) so that's how i played it, and i'm wondering if that's why it was more popular than RE8?
I am shocked that RE7 was the most popular. I thought it was a great game but it was way too scary for me and i had to watch my friend play most of it because i gave up (after screaming and turning off my tv without saving twice and disturbing my family members who were sleeping). i assumed that there would be more people like me who found the game to be too scary. i also thought that one of the leon games (probably 4 or 4 remake) would be the most popular since leon is the most popular - i did guess that one correctly.
I knew leon would be the most popular and honestly, i agree that he's a great character to play as. even tho i complain sometimes that he's the only character people write about, i think playing as him is super fun - i think he has the perfect difficulty level (at least in 4R) because he doesn't have assault rifles like jill and carlos do in 3R, many characters do in 6, and chris does in 8 (it's way too easy when you have one). based on 7 being the most popular, it makes sense that ethan is one of the more popular characters to play as. I personally disliked playing as him because he spends so much time without a weapon.
i was surprised to see that multiple people picked piers - i haven't finished chris' campaign as piers yet. i played as chris for my first run, so maybe it's really fun and i don't know it yet? i have also never played as jake (i don't like him so i played as sherry). i have only played re0 one time (i will be playing again tho), so i haven't played wesker mode yet. ill update when i do.
poll about which games ppl have played:
only 3 questions and it's completely anonymous !

Through the Lens // Five
Christian YuxYoutuber!Reader Words: 4.5K A/N: WOW did this take forever :( I’m sorry for the long wait but as you guys probably know I’m not in the best mental place right now and my main priority was getting help for me. Though, thanks for sticking with me! Love ya lots! But we’re looking at maybe? Two chapters until the end? Like usual I might post a poll on what fic to post but if anything I’ll just post summaries and Ill update as I go along~ If anything, a poll will be up with weekend to see what fics I’ll be posting next!
Chapter Four // Chapter Six
Tumblr media
To everyone, except for Gyungmo of course, nothing was out of the ordinary with you. You smiled and joked around the same, always enthusiastic about going out to eat or shoving your mouth with snacks. But, the moment that Christian joined, or if Chaeyoung was present, everything with you went quiet. You stayed in your place with the same excuses.
"I'm editing." "No, I'm just making sure the battery is okay." "I gotta make notes on what to delete."
Scott, on the other hand, began to notice, furrowing his eyebrows and thinking that maybe Chaeyoung had said something to you. But even when he knew no one was noticing the two of you, Chaeyoung offered you her snacks, always asking if you needed something from the store or if she could watch while you went over the edited videos. You tensed a bit when she was near you, giving her one-worded answers or sometimes answering with a shake of your head.
"Did I do something to her?" Chaeyoung looked over at Christian.
You had left the room rather quickly after Chaeyoung gave Christian a kiss on the cheek. Chaeyoung turned to you as you slammed your laptop shut, quickly walking out of the studio with Scott right behind you.
"Hm?" Christian finally gave his attention to Chaeyoung, eyes moving away from the reflection of the studio glass. He saw how Scott was whispering to you, your shoulders slumping, getting up and leaving with him right behind you. Christian's blood boiled, hands clenching into fists.
"If I did or say something to her," Chaeyoung repeated, elbow resting on the table and fist on her temple. "I feel like she doesn't like me much,"
Before Christian could answer, Gyungmo came in with Cline right behind him, the two showing Christian the finished song.
Tumblr media
"Gyungmo, I can't do this anymore..." You sighed, your thumb pad between your teeth as you nibbled on it, a habit you had when nervous or stressed.
"I told you, just stop overthinking these things-"
"But it's like he's rubbing it in my face," You turned to Gyungmo, hands now on your knees before you sighed, going back to staring at your laptop screen. "This video is almost half an hour long and I still haven't added any footage of him. And to top it, this whole part was about his process!"
Gyungmo sighed, biting his inner cheek, silent until you let your head fall. "So? Are you gonna cut this part out of the series?"
It was quiet, Gyungmo waiting for your response before you shook your head, giving out a sigh. You'll admit, you wanted to skip this part of the series but you knew you would get questions about why and the last thing you wanted was for fans to twist around your intensions. "No, I have to film him and see if he needs anything edited out."
With a nod, Gyungmo left you to continue his work. You hesitantly reached for your camera and laptop, holding on to the charger with your finger as you made your way to Christian's workspace. You stood outside the door, calming your nervous as you lifted your fist, about to knock when the door was pulled open, Christian looking down at you.
He was a bit startled, blinking and taking the tiniest of steps back before you immediately looked down. He watched as you fidgeted, almost dropping your laptop in the process of trying to find your words.
"I need to edit my video with you, just to see if it's okay with you and if you want-"
"I'm going on a date with Chaeyoung, can it wait?"
You gulped at the interruption, your voice already shaking with the nervous. The last thing you wanted was to make an even bigger fool out of yourself so you nodded. You simply stepped back, Christian moving past you and ignoring the way you bit your lip, heading in the opposite direction.
You locked yourself in Cline's space, taking deep breaths and calming yourself down. You slumped down on the arm of the couch, closing your eyes and breathing in and out. With a sigh and soft bite to the corner of your lip, you gulped down the rest of the feelings you had, fixing your laptop and charger in your hand before standing.
Scott looked down the halls, trying to find any sign of you before spotting you checking your phone, calling your name. You were a bit startled, Scott laughing as he walked over. "You hungry?"
You spent the afternoon in with Scott at a small restaurant, the two of you laughing and talking about anything Scott was working on. Eventually, the conversation turning into a game that Scott was interested in playing.
"I think my next series is going to be just playing that game, I've heard good things about it,"
"Are you seriously going to go back to gameplays?" Scott asked, excitement in his eyes as you laughed. The two of you eventually felt like you overstayed your lunch break, Scott letting you pay for the food after losing to a quick round of rock, paper, scissors.
When the two of you walked out, you looked up to find Christian and Chaeyoung walking across the street, hands tightly grasped. Chaeyoung giggling about whatever Christian whispered about, a smirk on his face. You ignored them, focusing on Scott who kept telling his story, your hand in the crook of his arm as the two of you decided to go on a stroll. You laughed a little at what Scott said, distracting you from Christian.
But Chaeyoung noticed you right away, smiling a bit and leaning her head on Christian's bicep. "Aren't they so cute? I feel like they were meant for each other,"
Christian looked over, quickly spotting how much you were laughing at Scott's hands tickling your sides. He clenched his teeth, Scott leaning all his weight on you as you attempted to hold him up, whining his name as he laughed, the two of you stumbling slightly.
You let Scott drag you back to him, continuing the walk. Christian hummed, turning back ahead and trying to ignore what he saw, letting out a breath. "She seems so nice... I kind of feel bad because I think she just doesn't like me," Chaeyoung let the conversation end there, focusing on Christian and their date. But Christian's jaw tensed, looking down at Chaeyoung.
"I'm sure you did nothing, she's just a little hard to get along with at first,"
Tumblr media
Gyungmo and Scott had invited the guys on your last night to end your vacation with a celebration, hosting a house party in Scott's place. You knew it wasn't nice, but you couldn't help but feel happy that Christian and Chaeyoung didn't go. You wanted to enjoy yourself once more before heading home, and you knew you weren't going to be able to if you only saw them together.
You let yourself relax, enjoying the company of Hyuk who wouldn't let you go, making you shy whenever you were teased about it. Woo taught you how to spin a few records, teaching you the basics of how to DJ. You stayed with your camera glued to your hand, taking pictures and videos of everyone and everything.
The next morning, you sat on the hotel bed, showered and with everything packed save for your laptop case. You tried looking for the courage to send the text, looking down at your phone. You let out a breath, squeezing your eyes closed and pressing the send button.
Christian's attention was given to his phone at the ding it made, seeing a text from you and sighing a bit.
Y/N 12:54 PM: Can we edit the video now?
Christian knew he couldn't avoid you forever, so he replied back that he was in his studio and to go over. He sat back in his chair, hands rubbing his face as he knew he needed to face you sooner or later. But still, he couldn’t help the anger that bubbled up whenever he saw you, knowing you belonged to Scott.
Christian waited for half an hour, closing his laptop and just about to give up on you when you knocked, heading inside the studio.
"Hey,"
Christian looked up from his laptop, seeing you walk in with your own laptop on hand. You closed the door behind you, Christian, without a word, moved his things aside and giving you room to set your laptop down.
The tension was thick and you began to think that you took forever in setting your editing programs up, taking a seat and clearing your throat. "So, I'm going to combine the videos and play them, I'll tell you my plans and you tell me what you want me to get rid of."
With only a nod and a hum that Christian gave you, you opened the file only for Christian's part of the series, clicking into each video in the order you set it. You waited as he watched the first clip, biting your tongue gently.
Christian was clicking away in the video, eyes focused on his screen as you zoomed in a bit, giggling. He turned to you, giving you a confused look before breaking out into a smile.
"You don't need this one," Christian sat back into his chair, making you hum.
"This one is the intro, kind of to kick it off." You hesitated on looking at him, Christian rolling his eyes and shrugging, sighing out a quiet whatever. You looked back at the video, clicking out of it and moving it to a new file, continuing the second video.
"Delete that, I want my programs to be kept to myself," You nodded, adding in an edit, making sure to type it into the notes on your phone, continuing the video.
Your leg shook with nerves, eyes glued to the screen, going from video to video and doing everything that Christian told you to do with it. It was only a couple more videos when a knock on the door made you both turn, Chaeyoung poking her head before giving a shy smile. “Sorry, I’ll let you guys continue-“
“No, it’s fine.” Christian waved her in, pulling a chair right next to him. You squirmed in your seat, eyes going back to your screen and clicking through the video. You ignored the tiny giggle that escaped Chaeyoung and the soft kiss that Christian gave her until Christian gave you his attention again.
By the end, what could've been a 24-minute long video turned into only 5 minutes. You combined all the videos together, seeing the time limit and frowning, going through other files to look for any other videos you could add.
"That's it, right? We finished?" You could hear the impatience in Christian's voice, pulling his laptop closer. Chaeyoung helped him pull his items closer, going back to resting her arm on the table.
"No, the video needs to be longer than just five minutes," You ignored the way Christian grumbled, closing your eyes and continuing to look for more videos.
"Why don't you like Chaeyoung? What did she do to you?"
You were caught off guard with the question, fingers freezing as you looked at Christian. He glared at you, almost as if he wanted to bury you alive, hand gripping the mouse. Chaeyoung, who was once on her phone, turned to Christian so quick, you thought she was going to snap her neck.
Your eyebrows furrowed in confusion, letting your hands fall from your keyboard to your lap, shaking your head as you scoffed. “What?”
With a sarcastic chuckle, Christian shook his head. “Everyone can tell that you don’t like Chaeyoung. So why? She’s been nothing but nice to you-“
“Who said that I didn’t like her? I never said that!” You argued back, turning fully toward him.
“You make it so fucking obvious!” Christian raised his voice, hand waving as if he were showing you how obvious it was. “All that’s left is for you to openly tell her to fuck off-“
“Why the hell are you saying such shit?” You yelled back, glaring at Christian. “I’m sorry that I don’t want to talk to your girlfriend like she's my best friend! Is that what’s bugging you?”
“Ian, stop...” Chaeyoung tried to stop Christian, looking at you with worried eyes. “I’m so sorry, please just ignore him.”
“Come on,” Christian laughed, shaking his head. “Y/N, you literally act like a bitch with her. You’re all fun and games with everyone and when she comes in the hate just oozes out of you!”
Your eyes widened, slamming your laptop closed and grabbing your things. Chaeyoung flinched at the slam, a quiet yelp leaving her and Christian only flinched a bit. “Have you ever thought that maybe it’s not her I hate, Christian?” You turned to the door, grabbing the doorknob. “Maybe, just maybe, it’s you that I hate?”
Before you could even take a step out, the door was slammed closed, catching you off guard. You were spun around, backing yourself to the door as Christian's jaw clenched, eyes filled with anger as your hands pressed into his chest, attempting to prevent him from getting closer.
"You have no fucking reason to hate me," Christian's words came out quietly, each one oozing venom. Your eyes that were once wide in surprise turned into a hard glare, adding force to your push that only resulted in Christian moving only slightly back. "I never did anything to you.“
"Ian..." Chaeyoung hissed, worry evident on her face as she desperately tried to pull him away from you. "That's enough, okay? You don't need to do this-"
"Never did anything to me?" You scoffed, staring up at Christian in disbelief. "You treated me so nice the whole beginning, but one little drunken night that we kissed and you suddenly changed on me! And you got yourself a girlfriend making me think that I'm the problem!"
Chaeyoung finally stopped trying to pull Christian -who was frozen in shock- back, as Chaeyoung looked at you as if you had grown another head, shaking her head a bit. "Christian wouldn't do that..."
You looked at Christian, an eyebrow raised as you waited for him to talk. “You didn’t tell her? That I pulled you out to dance and you made me think there might have been something between us, only for you to make me feel like a cheap hookup?”
Christian was at a loss for words, only staring at you as he finally stepped back enough, letting you rush out of the room. You stopped before closing the door, looking at Christian one more time. “I regret ever getting close to you,” The slam of the door echoed in the room, Chaeyoung letting out a breath and moving away.
“I really thought you started to like me,” Chaeyoung’s voice was soft, pulling away from Christian to grab her phone.
“I do-“
“No, you don’t,” Chaeyoung looked up at Christian. He faced her, worry on his face as Chaeyoung sighed. “Why did you even do this to her? To me?”
Christian tried to say something, anything to not hurt Chaeyoung. His mouth opened and closed as if he was choking on air, trying to find the right words before closing his eyes, letting out a breath.
“She doesn’t like me, she was drunk and I thought maybe, just maybe, she liked me but she only liked Scott. She probably only kissed me to get back at him since he was with some other girl.” Christian moved to sit on his chair, burying his face in his hands. “I didn’t want to hurt you, and you’re so cool and I thought maybe I can forget her but-“
“You’re still into her,” Chaeyoung finished his sentence, Christian quiet. He clasped his hands in front of his face, only nodding. Chaeyoung looked down, silently walking out the studio.
Christian stayed in silence, head spinning with thoughts of everything that has happened. He groaned, burying his face in his arms, wrapping his hands around his head, wanting to curl into a ball and hide for a while.
You tried to calm down, huffing out in anger as you set your things down on a desk, your eyes closed as you finally let yourself breathe. "Everything okay?"
Scott smiled when he found you, walking over as you sat up on the desk, swinging your legs lightly. He stood next to your legs, watching your lips curve up into a small smile. "It's flight nerves, nothing too big,"
Scott stayed quiet, knowing you were lying but only responding with a smile, patting your thigh gently. You were quiet, your fingernails gently scratching Scott's head as his eyes closed a bit, enjoying the attention. You smiled a little, tilting your head a bit. "Sometimes when you spend time with me, I wish you were the one I fell for,"
Scott scoffed, laughing a bit as his eyes stayed closed, leaning more into you before resting his head on your arm. "We would be that famous couple that people would call us mom and dad,"
"Bold you to think they already don't," You giggled as Scott laughed quietly.
You both stayed silent a bit longer, Scott eventually pulling back and grabbing your things, silently giving you the hint that it was time to leave. "I'm sorry things didn't work with the guy you liked," Scott grabbed your hand, fingers intertwining as the two of you headed to your hotel.
"It's whatever, I'm just glad I never told him or else I would've died from embarrassment." You shook your head, letting out a sigh. "Guess I just thought he liked me too,"
"Well he's an idiot if he doesn't like you, you would've been an amazing girlfriend." Scott smiled at your laugh, staying quiet during the short walk. He held the door of the hotel open for you, following you to the elevators.
“You know, lowkey you can give Gyungmo a chance.”
The suggestion caught you off guard, making you look at Scott as the two of you stood in your spots, ignoring the elevator door as it opened. Scott only laughed a bit, pressing the button to keep the door open as he stepped inside. “I was just saying,”
“Scott, what does that even mean?”
You knew exactly what it meant, anyone hearing Scott would know what it meant. But still, you were caught off guard and now with this sudden news, you weren’t sure you were hearing things correctly.
“I mean, Gyungmo has a thing for you. Or had... I’m not sure anymore.” Scott pressed the button again as the doors closed, reaching for your wrist to pull you inside.
“He had a thing for me?” You ask, letting yourself get dragged into the elevator.
“Okay don’t make this weird for him, I wasn’t supposed to tell you,” Scott watched as you simply nodded, blinking a bit but still processing everything he said, only looking up when the doors opened on your floor.
“Is he still coming to drive me?” You asked, Scott now on his phone.
“Yeah, he said to just give him a heads up.”
You asked him to send Gyungmo the text, stepping inside your room and putting away the last bit of your things. Scott sat at the end of the bed, phone in hand as he scrolled through it, occasionally looking up to see if you needed any help.
With a groaned sigh, you plopped on the bed next to Scott, resting your head on his shoulder. You two stayed quiet, looking at everything ready to be taken to the car, Scott occasionally chuckling a bit at something he would see on his phone. At the sound of a knock, you let Scott open the door and let in Gyungmo and Cline. You held on to Gyungmo's sleeve, letting him stay back as Cline and Scott left with a suitcase, the two talking.
"Scott said something to me," You kept your eyes on Gyungmo as he furrowed his eyebrows, thinking on what Scott could've possibly said to you. "He said you have a thing for me?"
With a sigh and smile, Gyungmo shook his head, intertwining your fingers with his. "I had a thing for you, I mean, you're so cute in your videos and you're kind and a sweetheart in person. But I like you like this, being with me and gossiping about stupid shit,"
You couldn't help the smile on your face, getting shy and looking down a little. Gyungmo watched as you collected yourself, lightly slapping your cheeks to get rid of the blush that you knew was present before swinging your bag over your shoulder. Gyungmo stayed by your side, the two of you in comforting silence. "Thanks for being there for me all this time, I hope you know I'm going to be there for you if you ever need me,"
Everything was quiet until you made it outside, Scott and John laughing loudly as Cline was dancing weirdly. Gyungmo stood next to you, a smile on his face as he watched Cline before elbowing you lightly, motioning to your phone. You giggled as Cline exaggerated his dancing more, moving closer to you and the laughter got louder from all of them. Before Cline could exaggerate anymore, John gasped about the time and everyone scattered to put the luggage in Gyungmo's car, rushing you inside.
The airport buzzed with people traveling in and out, the place almost a blur with everyone. You checked in with Scott by your side, making sure you had all your documents before you made your way to security. A soft sigh later, you let Scott pull you into a hug, wrapping your arms around him tightly.
"Thank you for letting me do this, I promise you guys are going to love it," You pulled back to offer Scott a hug grin, getting one in return.
"We better, or you're coming back to film everything all over again," Scott joked, making you giggle.
You gave Cline and John a hug, looking over at Gyungmo and wrapping your arms around his neck. "Thanks for everything," You whispered, kissing his cheek softly as you pulled back. Gyungmo smiled, trying to hide his blushing. With one final wave, you fixed your bag, using your phone to record the guys once more before heading to your terminal.
Tumblr media
Christian tried not to make it obvious as he walked up and down the halls of the building, looking for any sign of you. It had been two days and after you blocked him on Instagram, Christian had no idea what you were up to. He hadn't seen you in so long, and he didn't want to ask Scott seeing that as every time he tried to get some info, Scott just told him to text you.
Christian didn't bother to knock, just swinging the door open of Scott's studio to find him too close for comfort with a girl that wasn't you. She had a smile on her face, eyebrow raised as Scott leaned closer, only a breath away from kissing her. But the sudden door opened caused the two to look at Christian, his eyes wide in shock.
"Hey, what's up?" Scott turned to Christian who collected his thoughts before his blood boiled, teeth-gritting in anger.
"Are you fucking serious?" Christian erupted, Scott and the girl both startled from the sudden outburst. "Just because y/n isn't here you get to cheat on her?"
"What?" The girl glared at Scott, starting to push him away. "Who the hell is y/n?"
"Wait! What? No, hold up!" Christian moved aside as the girl furiously left, Scott trying to call her back before giving up, glaring at Christian. "Dude, what the fuck! You know how long I've been trying to get her to agree to go on a date-"
"What about y/n?" Christian yelled back, pushing Scott back.
"What about her? She's not even here!" Scott stumbled into the soundboard table, muttering a curse as his wrist got hit by the edge.
The outburst caught the attention of Gyungmo who rushed over, getting between both men. "What the hell is going on?"
"This asshole is practically fucking some girl in here just because y/n isn't here!" Christian tried to push Gyungmo away, trying to reach Scott but he moved farther away.
"What does she have anything to do with it?" Scott yelled back, gesturing around the room. "She's not here!"
"How the hell are you going to cheat on her like that!"
Scott stopped himself, blinking a bit before thinking about what Christian had just said. "Cheat on y/n? I'm not dating her, man."
Christian stopped trying to get past Gyungmo, furrowing his eyebrows. "Did you break up with her?"
"I wasn't dating her in the first place?" Scott grew even more confused, Gyungmo stepping away from Christian as he sat on a chair, sighing heavily.
"You really never noticed that it was Rome that she liked?" Cline's voice made the three turn to him, being caught off guard. Gyungmo was just as surprised at Cline's comment, the three staring at him. "Wait-"
"Did you think I didn't know?" Cline interrupted Gyungmo, head tilted in curiosity. "It was pretty obvious, I mean, I thought he liked her too but I guess not since Chaeyoung is in the picture." With a shrug, Cline dropped the subject, making everyone look at each other.
"Well, here I was thinking it was Hyuk..." Scott rubbed his cheek, pensive about everything that was said. "No wonder it didn't make sense."
"Wait... What?" Christian still couldn't get the whole picture, shaking his head. "She likes me?"
"She fucking fell in love with you, idiot." Gyungmo sighed, rubbing his eyes with the heels of his hands. "Only you would think she and Scott are dating."
"Man, Hyuk was a better suspicion than me. He was practically all over her, especially during her goodbye party. " Scott sat on the edge of his soundboard, shaking his head.
"Goodbye party?" Christian repeated, looking at Scott.
"We texted you about it, we just thought you were being an asshole and didn't want to go," Cline spoke up, still standing right outside the room. "She went back home like two days ago,"
Christian groaned, rubbing his face and gripping his hair. "I fucked up..."
"You think?" Scott scoffed, rolling his eyes. But still, Scott watched as Christian beat himself over what happened. With a sigh, Scott stood up straight. "I can help you find her. So you can properly apologize for being such a fucking dick." Christian looked up at his friend, slightly nodding his head. With a glare and roll of his eyes, Scott pulled out his phone, going to an old video on your channel and showing it to Christian. "She always hangs around here. It's her favorite place."

The Best Team in Hockey: The Chicago Blackhawks
Tumblr media
There’s just something about the red, white, and black on the Blackhawks jerseys that really draws you in. Maybe it’s the fact that it is clearly the best jersey in the world, let alone in the National Hockey League (according to a poll of NHL players). Maybe it’s the fact that they have been the most successful and dominant hockey team of the 2010′s, winning 3 Stanley Cup Championships in 2010, 2013, and 2015. Or maybe because the most electrifying hockey player on the planet, Patrick Kane (who just recently played his 1000th game in the National Hockey League) has his number 88 stitched to the back of that beautiful sweater. The point is that this team has been so important to me in my life, as well as the lives of most people from or living in the Chicago area, because of their success as a team and really just as a part of growing up in Chicago.
There is a lot of history behind the Blackhawks organization that makes it one of the most special and one of the most historic franchises in all of sports. When the National Hockey League first came to fruition, there were only 6 teams, and these teams were known as the “Original Six”. This group of teams consisted of the New York Rangers, the Boston Bruins, the Montreal Canadiens, the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Detroit Red Wings, and the Chicago Blackhawks. Being among the group of first National Hockey League teams automatically brings a ton of history to the franchise that other teams, other than the remaining 5 members of the “Original Six”, simply do not have. Not only does the team itself have a ton of history, but the Blackhawks have had a load of players that have gone down, or will go down, as all time great players that the National Hockey League has ever seen play the game. According to the National Hockey League’s website, which continually updates its “Top 100 Players of All Time” list, the list consists of former Blackhawks players Chris Chelios, Tony Esposito, Glenn Hall, Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, and Denis Savard. All of these guys are historic players that suited up for the Chicago Blackhawks for the majority of their career, if not their whole career. Even better than having 6 former Blackhawks on the list, is having 3 current Blackhawks, that made the cut, with those guys being Patrick Kane, Duncan Keith, and Jonathan Toews. I obviously don’t have much memories of the 6 former players on the list, but I am extremely familiar with the 3 current players on the list, as they have had a huge effect on my life and are honestly extremely important to my childhood.
Tumblr media
Duncan Keith has been the core of the Blackhawks defensemen since he first made the Blackhawks roster after being drafted by the team in June of 2002 (he was drafted less than a month after I was born, which I find absolutely crazy sometimes). When he first became a part of the Chicago Blackhawks organization, they were in a bad spot. They were not winning many games, they were going through a lot of changes when it comes to the management positions and the coaching staff, and they were starting to become a young team that really lacked experience. However, Duncan Keith was the first guy that was a part of that young group of guys that showed a ton of potential. He was the beginning of the dynasty that was the 2010′s Chicago Blackhawks, and it showed in being a key part of winning 3 Stanley Cup Championships, and 2 Norris Trophies, which show that he was the best defenseman in the league for two of his seasons in his career.
Patrick Kane is the most electric, fun to watch, skilled player that the Chicago Blackhawks have ever seen, as he rightfully obtained the nickname “Showtime” throughout his career in this organization. Drafted in 2007 with the first overall pick, everyone knew that he was going to be something special. I can still remember watching him skate all over the ice when I was 6 or 7 years old and just being astonished at how good he was, and how much better he was than almost everyone I have ever seen play the game of hockey. Not only is he known as probably the best Blackhawk to ever put on the red, white, and black jerseys, but he is also almost undoubtedly the best American born player that the league has ever seen. Hockey in Chicago was on a serious downward trajectory before Patrick Kane arrived, and it’s safe to say that he was the key in bringing the hockey fandom back into Chicago. Throughout his career, he has won 3 Stanley Cup Championships, as well as a Calder Trophy for being the best first year player, and a Hart Trophy as the Most Valuable Player in the National Hockey League.
Jonathan Toews has been the captain of the Chicago Blackhawks since the start of the 2008 season. He was just 20 years old when he was named the captain of the team, and was the third youngest captain that the National Hockey League has ever had. The first memory that I have of Jonathan Toews, or “Captain Serious” as Chicagoans have grown to know him as, is looking at the Blackhawks calendar that showcased a different player on the team for each month. One might think that his name would be pronounced “Toes”, but quickly we learned that it was actually pronounced “Taves” (somehow). “Captain Serious” was my favorite player that the Blackhawks have ever had throughout my life, and he probably had the biggest impact on my life as a Blackhawks fan. Toews was the young guy, but he was also the leader of the team from the day that he stepped foot in that locker room. He was a no nonsense type of player and worked harder than anyone else when he was on the ice, but you could tell that he was a super fun, energetic, and positive guy off of the ice as well. Recently he has been away from the team and unable to play with an unknown illness, which is very scary. Everyone hopes that he can return to the team next year, healthy and ready to go.
Tumblr media
The Blackhawks have been a huge part of my life. Growing up in the Chicago area, sports were just always prevalent in that area, and throughout my whole life, the teams have been extremely successful, but none more than the Chicago Blackhawks. They have the most championships in the league in the 2010′s, proving that nobody could really compete with them as far as team success in the league goes. Also, the players on the team have formed such a connection with the city of Chicago and all of the Blackhawks fans, that we all feel like they are truly part of our city and our culture. People that are my age have grown up with the guys that are currently on the team, and it really feels like myself and my peers have been a part of the team ever since the first championship season in 2010. My life has been infinitely better as a Blackhawks fan, and I couldn't thank guys like Patrick Kane, Duncan Keith, and Jonathan Toews enough for helping with that, as well as every single player that was a part of the team since I've been a fan. Nothing else that I have ever encountered or that has been a part of my life has effected me like sports, and out of all the teams that I have been a fan of since I was born, the Blackhawks have been the most successful and the team that I felt the most connected to.

Fear of the Water - Chapter 12
(FINNICK)
Millet and Cash have encountered each other on one of the endless cement boulevards. The pavement is uneven and cracked, and there are a handful of those muddy sinkholes strewn about. Great place for a showdown.
Millet runs from Cash at first. She’s slim and slightly muscular and fast as the wind; she could probably outrun him. She doesn’t have much in the way of weapons: a small knife with a blade as long as my thumb (which is all but useless) and a spear. She broke the head off of it and uses as a knife; she uses the shaft of the spear as a long-range weapon.
Cash chucks a spear in her direction; it misses by only an inch or two.
He starts to give chase. When he’s close enough, Millet suddenly whips around to face him and strikes him in the head with her staff. He stumbles; Millet whacks him again in the back of the knee, knocking him to the ground.
But Cash still has his wits about him. He uses the knife in his hand to stab her in the calf. She falls as he stands. He thrusts his knee forward and hits her in the face, breaking her nose. She coughs out a mouthful of blood and a tooth on the ground. All seems lost for her – until she punches Cash right in the groin. He stumbles backwards.
Millet forces herself to her feet and uses her staff to beat him back toward one of the sinkholes until he stumbles in. He fails to pull himself out the way Annie did and dies of suffocation a few minutes later. Millet gets double the sponsors she had already, and Teff, one of the victors from her district, showers her with gifts of food and clothing. People start chanting Millet’s name both on the rooftop where the party is and in the streets below.
Seven tributes left.
Millet was already a favorite when she entered the arena, but Seegred and that boy were long shots at best. And Cash and Euphemia were top contenders. With more than half their allies gone, the surviving Careers are becoming less and less likely to win. Seegred and Millet are nearly tied in the betting pool of who will win.
No one’s quite sure about Annie. She’s partially sheltered thanks to the mat she wove. She finds enough food to keep herself from starving. She defeated Gad, another favorite more than twice her size, without any weapons, but she’s “cracking a bit,” as Caesar puts it, which lowers her odds. She never stops singing that song.
Tributes crack every so often. The most recent to do so was Titus of District 6 in Johanna’s Games, who started eating his fellow tributes out of some mixture of hunger and insanity. Insanity. They threw that word around the moment Titus bit into a dead boy’s leg, but nobody’s said it about Annie yet. Tributes go into shock all the time and yes, she appears to have it worse than the others usually do, but there’s a good chance she’ll snap out of it.
The party goes ahead anyway, though it’s only for the seven tributes now. Millet’s sponsors and mentors are over the moon, as one might expect. Seegred’s sponsors are cheery, too, since she just killed someone a day ago. Things are looking good for these two young women. In fact, they’re vying for the top spot in the polls.
No one really seems to care that Cash is dead since Shine is still in the running. She’ll inherit all of her partner’s funds. And Cash was boring, anyway.
This is shaping up to be one of those years where a Career doesn’t win. It’s not unheard of – a non-Career usually wins every two or three years – but the change of pace is still exciting.
Of the non-career districts, 11 has the best odds on paper. A lifetime of labor and repression makes them physically and mentally strong, and angry and determined. They don’t win that often, though.
Most of the other districts are equally screwed: their industries have no application in the arena, and the tributes are usually poor and downtrodden children without much of a real chance. It’s generally agreed that no one under sixteen will ever win, so younger tributes’ odds are automatically lowered. I was the only victor under sixteen to win, and like everybody says, I’m the exception, not the rule.
(ANNIE)
I wake up to funny noise. I think it’s thunder at first, since it’s always raining here, but it’s growling. From an animal. Many animals. The sound gets closer.
Maybe I’ll run? No. I’ll stay here. I’m too tired to run. Too tired to do anything.
Let the animals come. I’ll stay here. I’ll stay here.
My mother, she butchered me My father, he ate me My sister, little Ann-Marie She gathered up the bones of me
And tied them in a silken cloth to lay under the juniper Tweet, tweet! What a pretty bird am I!
The animal is a lot of animals. Dogs. Mutts that look like dogs. Black coats and bright orange eyes. Big sharp teeth that are so big and sharp that they can’t possibly fit in a dog’s mouth. Bodies built all square and muscular like the fighting dogs back home but bigger and scarier.
They are chasing a boy. A boy with black hair and baby fat still on his cheeks. He has a pack. Looks pretty full. Maybe from District 6? District 10? Doesn’t matter. Not sure who’s left anymore. No one is left anymore.
The boy is bleeding from just about everywhere. A big chunk of flesh dangles from his upper arm like one of the dogs tried to tear it off but couldn’t finish the job. I think I see his bone.
He stumbles and falls as he runs, only to get up and stumble again and again until the mutts are on top of him. I watch from my perch as they tear his flesh. It makes a funny noise as it rips.
My mother, she butchered me My father, he ate me My sister, little Ann-Marie She gathered up the bones of me
And tied them in a silken cloth to lay under the juniper Tweet, tweet! What a pretty bird am I!
It’s not a nice thing to see but I can’ tear my eyes away. I’ve never seen somebody’s insides. He’s just a hunk of meat. So am I.
I heard in school that there’s a limit to how much pain the human body can feel. It’s not endless, which I think is nice. And sometimes if it really hurts too much, you just pass out because you can’t process it.
My mother, she butchered me My father, he ate me My sister, little Ann-Marie She gathered up the bones of me
And tied them in a silken cloth to lay under the juniper Tweet, tweet! What a pretty bird am I!
A cannon goes off, and soon the mutts tire of their meal and move on. I climb down and run over as fast as I can to loot the body. I start taking everything I can reach, things I urgently need. Boots, socks, knife, pack.
I can feel the hovercraft somewhere behind me, waiting to take the body, and I return to my nest to go through the bag. I still take a long time to lay it out because everything has to be in order before I can eat or drink because everything has to be in order before I eat or drink because everything has to be in order before I can eat or drink and everything has to be in order. The sun goes down and the rain starts up.
My mother, she butchered me My father, he ate me My sister, little Ann-Marie She gathered up the bones of me
And tied them in a silken cloth to lay under the juniper Tweet, tweet! What a pretty bird am I!
Bandages, a pack of raisins, a salve, a half-empty canteen of water, a knife.
I drink the water as fast as I can and set it out to collect rain. I’m happy because starvation is better than dehydration and now I won’t be dehydrated. I wasn’t really dehydrated before because of all but I really don’t want to die like that, and now I’ll have two water bottles to drink from during the day when the sun is out.
The boots don’t fit me right but the socks are dry and ill-fitting boots are better than no boots.
I make another mark on the wall by the other marks for the other people that are dead. Seventeen. Is that right? I guess it doesn’t matter.
I smile and wiggle my toes inside the dry socks inside the dry boots and I think how happy I am to have two boots again because I lost one in the sinkholes so I only had one so I was uneven and both sides have to match and I almost took off my second boot because both sides have to match but I made myself keep it on even though both sides have to match because one boot is better than no boots but now I have two so I don’t have to worry.
My mother, she butchered me My father, he ate me My sister, little Ann-Marie She gathered up the bones of me
And tied them in a silken cloth to lay under the juniper Tweet, tweet! What a pretty bird am I!
There are sixteen raisins, which is good because sixteen is a square number like four. So I eat four raisins and I have twelve yet and I can eat three more times because I have to eat them in fours because it has to all be square and both sides have to match.
(FINNICK)
Annie keeps a tally on the wall beside her. Anytime a cannon goes off, she uses a pointy rock to scratch a tally mark into the stone wall.
She repeats her song over and over all day long until her throat is dry and she has to drink all of the water she’s gathered. She spends the rest of the day lying very still. Then she sets her bottles out again and lets the rain collect overnight.
She sometimes goes into these sort of frenzies and will spend an hour scrubbing her hands and arms raw. Luckily, these have only happened at night so far, so she can wash herself down as many times as she likes without worrying about dehydration or heat stroke, which have become major concerns for some of the tributes.
Things seemed to be speeding up when the boys from 1 and 6 died in two days, but they grind to a painful halt once Axle’s body is carried away. Nothing interesting happens for three days.
The surviving Careers are forced to leave the Cornucopia every day because the blistering sunlight heats the metal and essentially makes it an oven. Around sundown one day, there’s a torrential downpour that results in a flash flood that washes away the remaining food and supplies. But the flood isn’t enough because no one died or fought.
It’s no surprise when the Gamemakers decide that a feast is in order. Something to get things going again.
We’re at the endgame now. That’s almost comforting. I don’t want Annie to die, but I do want this to be over.  I want to stop hearing that  damn song  playing over and over in my head. I keep all the windows open at night  so I can hear the noise from below. It’s usually enough to drown out the song.
I open the windows in the bedroom when see my patron after the party. I don’t have to explain why I need background noise; he’s all for it because he thinks I’m an exhibitionist.  I’m not an exhibitionist, but I am whatever the client wants me to be. So for a few minutes I’m an exhibitionist.
He passes out as soon as he’s finished like most men do,  so I don’t expect to get my customary payment of a secret. He wakes up every hour to pee though – something to do with his prostate that I really don’t want to know about – and strikes up a flirtatious conversation.
“I hear you’re something of a collector,” he says as he fixes himself a drink.
“Oh?” I lift an eyebrow. “And what do you ‘hear’ that I collect?”
“Information. Secrets.” He hands me a glass tumbler identical to the one he holds, right down to the murky grey liquid inside. “A funny thing for a victor to collect.”
“You forget my first and favorite collection,” I say. “Conquests. Rich, handsome, important people like you.”
He chuckles. I think he’s actually convinced himself that I don’t mind being whored out, that maybe I even like it. Fine. At least he’s not weeping with guilt like some patrons do when we’re finished. I can’t stand that. Why buy me in the first place if it’s such a strain on the fabric of your morality? I’ll never make sense of these ultra-rich people.
“What sort of secrets do you like?”
“The juicer the better,” I say.
He takes a sip from his glass and frowns in thought. “Did you know I’m a perfumer?”
“I did. Don’t tell me your secret ingredient, though, that’s much too precious to share.”
He chuckles again. “I worked with the president’s gardener for a time.” I wonder if this is the same gardener that my other patron told me about, the one that fucks his identical twin. “And a few botanists. This was decades ago, long before you were born. We were engineering the roses in the president’s garden to have a stronger smell. Too strong, if you ask me. I prefer subtler stuff.”
“Sure.”
“But it’s what the president wanted. These are the same roses he pins on his lapels, mind you,” he says. “They reek. And I couldn’t understand why until I met him myself. He’s got something wrong with his mouth. Open sores that never heal.”
Gross.
“So he uses the flowers to cover the blood smell,” I say. “That’s not as exciting as I’d hoped.”
His eyes light up. “Oh, that’s not the secret,” my patron says. “The secret is how Snow developed those sores in the first place.”

i’m considering writing a fanfic for nanowrimo and i have a few ideas i’m bouncing around so i thought--why not ask u guys what you’d be interested in reading? so i’ve got ‘em listed down here w/ links to short bits for the ones i’ve written some of. let me know which ones u’d be interested in pls! i can’t guarantee which i’ll write or if i’ll write anything, but i’m super curious in ur opinions <3
Jonghyun, His Brother and the Angel Next Door
Genre: angst, romance, family Ship: jonghyun/onew Warnings: character death (shinee-member key), murder, violence, angst, chronic illness
Summary: jonghyun’s life is turned upside down when, for the first time in his life, he meets his teenaged half-brother, taemin. after three years on the streets, taemin is brought into custody--and to jonghyun-- when a violent brawl results in the death of his foster sibling, key. after so many years apart, and with so many emotions between the two of them, will jonghyun be able to connect with his brother?
Notes: mostly centered around jonghyun and taemin, though the romance between jonghyun and jinki is still a prominent feature. the character death does take place before the story starts, but there is a flashback to the event.
Ace Attorney AU
Genre: mystery, crime, angst, romance Ships: jonghyun/key, onew/taemin Warnings: non-SHINee character death before start of story, violence, murder, drug use, organized crime
Summary: lee jinki is a successful defense attorney, protecting the innocent in an age where guilt is presumed. when kim kibum, part-owner of a successful doggy day care, is accused of murdering his business partner, kim jongmin, jinki is on the case to prove his innocence. but will he be able to secure a not guilty verdict against the flaming charisma, choi minho?
Notes: based thematically in the ace attorney universe, but none of the characters/events of that series will be mentioned or important to the story. instead, the work echoes the set-up, pacing, and cartoonishness of the ace attorney games, which will hopefully resonate with fans of aa wo excluding those unfamiliar with the games. romance is not very big in this story but jonghyun/key are an established couple and ontae develop ~feelings~. there’s many OC’s to round out the cast of the murder investigation, but the shinee characters are the focus. most of the angst in this story is centered on the jonghyun character, who’s been thru a lot of shit and his brother is also dead. so.
Giant Robot AU (no link this is the only one i don’t have anything written for dskljdslf)
Genre: action, romance, adventure, angst Ships: jonghyun/minho, taemin/eunsook Warnings: angst, violence, smut (maybe)
Summary: junghee and taeyeon are sisters in a post-apocalyptic world, surviving on their own in the slums of an almost-abandoned city. their lives are changed when a group of travelers stumble upon the sisters and lead them the outside world, which is little better than a desolate wasteland. however, it’s in this desert that taeyeon discovers a powerful remnant of the civilization that once was: an oversized and powerful robot. will taeyeon and junghee be able to harness this ancient energy, or will it lead to further destruction?
notes: everyone’s sapphic. just some young ladies and nbs piloting some robots and falling in love with each other. but bad things happen too ofc sdklfjslfj. kind of inspired by gurren lagann but kind of not--but that anime itself is a good display of the kind of tone i want to hit with this story, but i might write smut idk yet.
Something Like Happiness
Genre:ABO, romance, smut, angst Ships: mostly jonghyun/minho, key/onew & jonghyun/taemin but tbh it’s kinda everyone/everyone Warnings: angst, kinky smut, mpreg
Summary: Jonghyun and his four roommates all enjoy the benefits their relationship brings them, but it comes with a risk, too.
notes: tbh idk what i’m going to do with this work as a whole. i know i’ll have to rewrite basically the whole first chapter to make some changes, particularly around the jinki character. this is the fic i’ve got the least planned out ahead bc honestly? idk if i can expand this into a story with a clean beginning, middle and end. so, if i do this one, it might be more of an “au” than the other... “aus” because, rather than telling a cohesive story, i’ll bounce back and forth in time and even perspective to instead provide a more rounded perspective on our center characters and their lives. ye.
Pandemic Story
Genre: romance, angst Ship: Onew/Taemin Warnings: angst, character death, sad ending(?)
Summary: In the aftermath of a pandemic that’s wiped out over one-third of the US population, jinki is kept safe in an advanced quarantine unit with taemin, an advanced ai system that’s been programmed to love him.
notes: honestly a depressing fic. probably the only fic i’ve ever strongly considered writing to have a depressing ending.
pls let me know which fic(s) u’d be interested in reading by filling out this ranked poll 😘

Hey guys, Daiki Aomine here
Huh. Me, Tetsu, and.. Kagami? Against Midorima and Takao. Hah. Gotta say, it's pretty interesting. Looks like this poll is about how well we sync up? Well... basketball is basically our bread and butter. And if we're talking about basketball, there's no one who can play better together than me and Tetsu. Though... Kagami is good too. He and Tetsu also make a great pair, and... even I'll admit that it was pretty good playing with him too. Hah. Alright then. Tetsu, Kagami, let's show the Shutoku boys what we're made of.
===
BIG ESSAY under the read more!
this is a VERY interesting trio! it consists of the two main characters of kuroko no basket, kuroko and kagami, as well as another major character, aomine! now kuroko and kagami are both on the same basketball team, seirin, but aomine is on a rivaling school, touou, so how do these 3 form an ultimate trio?
Tumblr media
[Image iD: A picture of Kagami Taiga (left) and Kuroko Tetsuya (right). Kagami is sitting up right, with Kuroko laying on his back next to him on the right. Both of them are holding onto the same basketball, Kuroko holding the ball above him, with Kagami putting his hand on it. Kagami is looking at Kuroko. The text at the bottom reads, "See you next week!" End ID]
first of all, let's start with the kuroko and kagami details! in basketball, kuroko's main specialty is passing. he can pull off the trickiest passes in his opponent's blind spots, making it seem like the ball is coming from no where to his opponents! this is known as "Misdirection" and its a very powerful tool that has helped kuroko and his team win games!
kagami, on the other hand, is an incredibly powerful player. his main ability is his absurd jump height, but he's also just generally really good at basketball! hes fast, strong, agile, everything youd need for a player! now combine his superb skills with kuroko's insane passes, and you have a duo that's virtually unbeatable (save for essentially the series's antagonists, who are also basketball prodigies of their own)!!
in fact, kuroko being so unnoticeable makes people call him the "shadow." a shadow that supports his team! and since kagami is paired with kuroko, hes known as the "light" because he shines so brightly while playing on the court! the series loves to mention how the stronger the light, the stronger the shadow. so the better kagami gets, the better kuroko can get too!
its this partnership that allows them to take on the "Generation of Miracles" (the antagonists i mentioned earlier)!! oh and not to mention that theres a little arc where they both realize they cant keep relying on each other to win games, and that they need to get stronger individually and THEN work together to become an even better duo!! since the series is about them theres SO MUCH MORE, but ill leave it at this

[Image ID: A picture of Aomine Daiki (left) and Kuroko Tetsuya (right). Aomine is sitting up right, with Kuroko laying on his back next to him. Aomine has his right hand over Kuroko's eyes. The text at the bottom reads "See you next week!" End ID]
now lets talk about kuroko and aomine! the "Generation of Miracles" i mentioned earlier originates before the start of the series, specifically, when they formed when they were in middle school. some of the members of the GoM actually include kuroko and aomine! thats right! they were partners back in their middle school days!
aomine was an incredibly talented player with speed, strength, agility, game sense, and everything else a pro player would need! kuroko on the other hand, is rather unimpressive physically, probably one of the worst players in the entire basketball team.... and back then, he never had his misdirection, so there wasn't much he could contribute or improve on...
actually, kuroko was seriously considering quitting the team because he knew he couldnt do much, but it was aomine who encouraged kuroko to keep working hard!! because in aomine's eyes, kuroko was someone who loved basketball more than anyone else, and hes practiced more than other players on the team!! it would be disheartening to see someone so into the sport give up!
and its at this time that akashi (another member of the GoM) discovers kuroko and aids him on his quest to develop his misdirection!! with this tool, kuroko is able to join with the other members of the Generation of Miracles on the court!!
i want to note that in one of the games, murasakibara (another member of the GoM) comments how everyone seems to be scoring way more with kuroko around, ESPECIALLY aomine and kuroko!!! aomine loves to mention that he and kuroko play basketball so well together, and kuroko agrees!! in fact... the term light and shadow originates here! aomine was the original "light" to kuroko's "shadow!!"
ever since kuroko and aomine met, theyve become extremely close friends, and theres no one whos caught more of kuroko's passes than aomine in middle school!! they supported each other and were incredibly powerful players when working together!! again, theres more to share but ill cut it off
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A picture of Kagami Taiga (left) and Aomine Daiki (right). Kagami is wearing a black collared shirt, with his hand adjusting his undershirt's collar. Aomine is also wearing a similar black collared shirt, with his hand over his chin. Both of them are facing away from each other, but their eyes are looking at each other. The text at the bottom reads, "See you next week!" End ID]
now for the most interesting part, aomine and kagami! they only met during matches against seirin and touou. however, aomine is fully aware of what kagami is, that being kuroko's "new light." in their first meeting, aomine is unimpressed by kagami, noting that "his light is too dim" to be playing with kuroko. but since aomine is a member of the generation of miracles, kagami has made it his mission to defeat each and every one of them! so this is where their rivalry begins!!
their rivalry is much stronger compared to other members of the GoM because their play styles are very similar! both speedy, powerful players with superb basketball skills! the only difference being that aomine is faster while kagami jumps higher! oh and it should be noted that part of aomine's character is that hes detached from basketball because hes TOO good at the game! he wants someone who can challenge him...
so to sum up the above in short, aomine looked down on kagami, but after facing him multiple times, he grew to respect kagami. seeing him as a rival more than kuroko. kagami feels the same way, as they understand that their styles are very similar, so they have A LOT in common (they even wear the same brand and have the same shoe size!!) so despite the two being enemies at first, the rivalry and bond they grew by playing against each other is something special
so yeah! thats my evidence on how all 3 of them could make a very synced up trio!! i know this is pretty long but i hope i got the point across!! thank u for reading!!!
Daiki Aomine heading out
Preliminary Round: Kuroko no Basuke
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kuroko Tetsuya and Kagami Taiga vs Kuroko Tetsuya, Kagami Taiga and Aomine Daiki vs Midorima Shintarou and Takao Kazunari
Propaganda for Tetsuya and Taiga: "Kuroko’s play style depends on being the “shadow” supporting someone’s “light”, and Kagami is that light. They start with a natural synchronicity and help each other grow as basketball players."
Propaganda for Tetsuya, Taiga and Daiki: "i know that my mutual submitted a long essay about them already but here are some other cool bug facts about them!! - they have this song together: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhpQYlQ2sAQ&pp=ygUha3Vyb2tvIG5vIGJhc2tldCBicmVha2luZyB0aHJvdWdo - kuroko and kagami want to save aomine... kagami even sings it in the song... - kagami and aomine are similar in love for basketball, basketball positions, shoe size, etc. - aomine and kagami do a basketball dunk together to win a very important game - as teammates, kuroko and kagami's plays compliment each other-- as the shadow and light of their team, they're necessary for their team's victories - they say they get along with each other most on their team (kagami and kuroko) - likewise, aomine and kuroko said that they got along with each other the most in their middle school teams - for kagami and kuroko, in the final game, kuroko trusted kagami so much, he knew what kagami would do-- which helped them defeat a guy who could see the future"
Propaganda for Shintarou and Kazunari: "of course these two didnt start out as friends. in fact! back in middle school, midorima's team completely crushed takao's team! like many other opponents who have to go up against any member of the generation of miracles, takao seriously considered quitting the sport after being dominated by the GoM. however, takao stuck with it, continuing to practice basketball, swearing that he would one day defeat the generation of miracles! until one of their members, midorima, just happened to go to the same school as him! this kind of sparks a one-sided rivalry, takao wanting to prove his worth to a member of the generation of miracles. midorima has no opinion on this. however, as the two continue to train together, midorima does praise takao's dedication to improving himself in basketball. midorima deeply respects those who "do everything humanly possible" to achieve their goals, a trait takao strongly exhibits. as such, the two begin to work (and hang out) much more, building a pretty solid friendship!
to be specific of how in sync they are, the two have a special move they developed together! this involves midorima's ability to make a basket from anywhere on the court, combined with takao's incredible ability to accurately pass to his teammates! its dubbed as the "sky direct three point shot" which basically involves midorima jumping in the air, doing the motion of doing a three pointer, and takao passing the ball INTO MIDORIMA'S HANDS right before he shoots! this effectively gives midorima an instantaneous shot, virtually unblockable! and the series does emphasize that the two practiced quite a bit to get this move to work! but the results speak for themselves, as its probably one of the strongest moves in the entire series!!"

Another Set of Updates
Okay, gonna try to keep this as brief as possible!
My poll regarding which Kidge-a-Palooza AU I should turn into a story proper is still available: [here]. I’m gonna leave it up for another week or so, so please give it a vote if you haven’t already!
Chapter 4 of Here (In Your Arms) is up and available: [here].
Chapter 2 of Paint me in Trust is up and available: [here].
Chapter 2(6) of Time, Space and Everything Between is up and available: [here].
Since the update for Time, Space and Everything Between is up, I wanted to clarify a few things about where it’ll be going from hence forth. That information (spoiler free) can be found below for those that are interested.
Okay, so, confession time! This fic wasn’t supposed to become what it is now. Originally, I planned for this fic to be about six/ seven chapters and go in a somewhat different direction than it has. There was going to be an entire chapter dedicated just to the Kogane and Holt families bonding. The rescue of Shiro was going to go almost the same as it did in the series canon, with Keith being kept on Earth with his father using his camouflage device and entering the Garrison in hopes of snuffing out who the Blue Paladin was. The only big changes to it that I intended to make was Keith and Pidge knowing each other prior, Keith actually being a Galra, and when they head back to the shack, they’re greeted by Papa Kogane. From there, I was planning to end the fic with them going through the wormhole and implying events played out mostly the same as canon. But, then I decided I didn’t really like that idea either, so then I thought I’d go the route of letting Keith grow up with the Holt’s. Like, Ethan moving out there and Krolia leaving Keith on Earth to have a tradional human childhood.
As you can see, I didn’t end up doing any of that. And you may be wondering why.
Because the last season of Voltron left me that disappointed but I will admit I had issues with the show even before that Spit-in-the-Face ending but we’ll get there and I was raised by parents who said “If you don’t know how you’d improve something, you shouldn’t be the one to complain about it.”
Well, fine then. I’m gonna do just that.
ALSO I WANT TO CLARIFY that I am NOT saying I could have written the show better than the show runners themselves! I’ve never been in the position(s) they were in. I do, however, have the benefit of hindsight, which allows me to look at where the show succeeded and failed respectively, and take steps that I think would offer a more cohesive, enjoyable story-telling experience as a whole. I am taking the things that I, personally, took issue with, as well as some of the bigger things I’ve seen the fandom at large take issue with. At the end of the day, though, most of these decisions will be made from my own personal desires/ whims (since, you know, ship-feels and all that jazz). I will, however, be open to criticism from any and all who read my fics, so please feel free to tell me what you think does or doesn’t work as we go along.
I’m gonna break this down into four main categories down below; Things I’m Adding, Things I’m Cutting, Things I’m Adjusting, and Cut Fic Content. All but one of these is pretty self-explanatory, I think, but I promise to explain that little oddity when we get there. I’ll also touch on what and why I chose to approach certain things the way that I did.
Things I’m Adding
Melenor and Garett
Queen Melenor is kind of an anomaly in the series, don’t you think? It was kind of implied throughout most of the series proper that she died while Allura was still pretty young, which would have made a lot more sense for both Allura’s relationship with Alfor, as well as why Alfor was so distant from Zarkon when Daibazaal began tattering at the seams. But then Season 8 happened and threw all that out the window! All of a sudden, Melenor’s death suddenly carries this great significance for Allura, to the point she has a hallucination about her. Plus, it also kinda throws a wrench into scenes from the earlier seasons. Allura specifically says “Zarkon killed my Father and my Mother!” but… If Melenor was killed by Zarkon, where was she during the fall of Altea? Why wasn’t she with her daughter and husband in the final moments? And it makes even less sense when you look at that first scene where Allura and Coran were introduced. There were eight pods there. You mean to tell me Alfor didn’t think it might be a good idea to save an extra body or two to help guide Allura as she steps into the role she will have to take once he’s gone? Or even to help with maintaining/ rebuilding the Castle of Lions?
So, I’ve decided to add Melenor as a way to give some more characterization to not only she herself as a character, but also Alfor. Plus, I decided to make use of Garett (whose name I spell differently for reasons), Coran’s son from the original series, too. I think it’d be more fun to have an extra set of hands on board to help maintain the Castle of Lions and teach the Paladins, but maybe closer to their age range. So, we’ll see how things go with adding him to the roster. :3
Backstory for the Blades
This was something that we should have gotten a little bit of exposition on, considering how inflated their importance got. Like, the Blade became instrumental to the functionality of both Voltron and the Rebels due to their intelligence gathering. I think it’d have been kind of cool to see where it all started and what events in specific triggered it into becoming.
More Focus on Team Relationships
I didn’t really feel like the big victory against Zarkon was earned at the end of Season 2. I also didn’t think the team really earned any of their bigger victories, such as against Lotor and Honerva. They never felt like a real team that meshed because they just kinda stuck the same pairs/ clicks together. This was my biggest issue throughout most of the show and I really want to explore the dynamics we never really got to see. There are a few standout relationships that definitely needed some retooling, but I’ll mention those farther down.
More Alien Worlds
Sci-fi and Fantasy are my big genres because I. Fudgin. Love seeing the designs for different technology, worlds and races. And while we did get some interesting ones with the series proper - which I’ll be mostly still including - I wish we’d gotten to see more. So, because I have no self-control, I’ll be planning to do that here!
Shiro’s Love Life
Shiro deserved better. I feel like that’s kind of something that most of the fandom can agree on. I don’t say this from a place of hate for Curtis, though, because… Well, what is there to hate? He was a literal background character who did nothing, said maybe two lines of dialogue, and that was it. Considering how much they pushed Shiro being the rep for the LGBT+ crowd, they did literally nothing with his love life. Hell, Adam was only revealed as his fiance because Bex fought tooth and nail for them to say it! If they hadn’t pushed the way they did, it would have all been subtext.
So, Shiro is going to have a romantic side plot in this fic, where we’ll focus on him and the character I’ve picked to be his partner.
Minor Side Romances
Some other little side pairings are gonna get a bit of love, here, too, since Voltron really only did the romance side of things well with, like, two couples. All the main couples are also gonna get plenty of spotlight, but I also think it would be fun to do some smaller side ships every now and then, too.
Things I’m Cutting
Villain Roulette
There was way too much jumping back and forth between who our main villain to focus on was. Bam, it’s Zarkon! No, wait, now it’s Lotor! Just kidding, here comes Zarkon again! Except that it was actually Lotor! Or so you thought; it’s actually Honerva haha great prank amiright? It was exhausting and I think it’d be a lot simpler to just… Stick with one villain who controls the smaller monster-of-the-day bad guys for an extended period of time and, once they’re for reals defeated, then move on to the next. I’ll be taking this approach for the sake of not only having a more focused story, but also my own sanity. I’ve never been good at gambling so trying the same thing as the show would probably turn out even worse for me.
Keith’s Excellent Blade Adventure with His Mommy
This is all unnecessary in this story, so we won’t be doing it at all. Keith’s sorry purple tail is staying with Team Voltron; no buts, no fuss, no coconuts.
Shiro’s Illness and Adam’s Death
Adam’s death is something I could go on about for hours specifically because it seemed unfair and kinda petty. Like, I feel they killed him specifically because they couldn’t kill Shiro, and they wanted to amp up the Tragic Backstory for our prior leader. So, instead, that’s getting the boot, as well as Shiro’s illness, since it’s also unneeded for plot convenience. Plus, it could have been nice to have a character that was willing to call Shiro out on the Atlus. Shiro always got treated like some kind of flawless entity, and I think it’d been nice to have someone call that Nice Guy Schtick out.
Allura and the Entity Plotline
This whole thing made no sense, got no proper development because of how late into the game they introduced it, and ended up being nothing more than a tool for them to kill Allura off. So, that can GTFO of my house post haste.
The Ending as a Whole
Some parts of the ending worked, but most of it just sucked. When the ending is so bad that it makes me feel obligated to stan characters I was ambivalent/ outright disliked? Yeah, gonna need to walk that back a bit.
Most of Seasons 3-6
The pacing in these seasons really was terrible. We derailed working on the team dynamic, building up the Coalition and Rebel forces, and developing the Paladins’ characters to instead focus on all that shit with Lotor. That… Was infuriating. Especially considering it was all basically a waste.
Additionally, we had Keith sidelined and his arc - which was clearly going to be center around him learning how to be a leader - completely pushed aside and then treated as if it did happened when he showed up late with Starbucks at the end of Season 6. That felt really unbelievable to me.
Time Skips
There were way too many time skips, for serious. Especially when those time skips didn’t include any kind of change in development/ character for the team. There’ll be smaller time skips, but nothing as egregious as what we got in seasons 6 and 7.
Things I’m Adjusting
Lion Swap
This’ll still be happening, but the circumstances that trigger it will be different. I may also shift around who gets to take which Lion when we get to that point. I haven’t decided just yet, but I’ll have it figured out before we reach that point. Most of this fic is already planned out and, honestly, the Lion Swap will be finalized once I figure out what I’m doing with a few of the other characters.
Shiro and Keith’s Relationship
This, right here? This was one of my biggest issues with Voltron. Keith was completely codependent on Shiro, while Shiro clearly cared about Keith’s well-being but it always felt like he’d have been just fine if something similar to what happened to him happened to Keith. It’s just… Really gross to me. It doesn’t help that I also find the whole “Dying for Your Lover” Trope – which I’ve seen a lot of people praise The Black Paladins for implying - to be incredibly disgusting and unhealthy. Also Keith’s flagrant hypocrisy never getting called out bothers me a lot since I actually like when a character behaves in a hypocritical manner, since it feels organic, but it has to be called out because hypocrisy can lead to double-standards and create harmful environments and I need to stop for now
So, Keith and Shiro are still going to be close, but they aren’t going to be that close.
Keith and Allura’s Relationship
Oh, look! Another potentially interesting aspect of the show that they kinda dropped the ball on! I really hated Allura’s heel-turn on Keith when it’s revealed that he’s Galra in S2 because a) It’s not like Keith himself knew this and was actively hiding it, and b) It felt out of character for the way Allura had been presented thus far. Her lashing out at Zarkon when she was captured made sense since he directly killed her father, her people and her planet. And I could understand being wary of the Blades – to the extent that she was in the first half – but after Keith’s heritage is revealed, she’s completely cold to him and only seems to decide he’s a good guy when he’s willing to take on a potential suicide mission! They either needed to drag the animosity out and show it effecting Allura’s ability to work with the team as a whole and also show the team sticking up for Keith because the fact that Hunk was the only one that said anything is kinda messed up like where tf was Shiro if he and Keith are oh so close? or they needed to tone Allura’s attitude towards him back a bit more, have her approach him in a manner similar to how she addressed the Blade members; acknowledging he is there and contributing, but not praising or thanking him outright.
And since Keith presents and knows he’s part Galra from the start in this fic? Well, we’ll actually get to play around with that dynamic a little more. And while I’m on the subject of our favorite Altean princess…
Allura’s Character Inconsistencies
Allura’s character jumped around a lot in some of the earlier seasons and I’d be willing to wager that this is because the writers never settled on an age for her. And I don’t mean during the big changes like her becoming a Paladin or Lotor’s betrayal, since it’d make sense she be shaken by situations that drastic. One minute, she’s this composed, confident and well-spoken young leader doing the best she can. The next, she’s a more temperamental sort who has low self-esteem/ confidence in her own abilities to even successfully contribute to a team. Now, I think I kniw what they were trying to do; they were trying to show that the more impulsive side of her is more genuine while the composed side is her trying to be the leader she is expected to be. I get it. They fixed this and improved on it later down the line, but they could have done better by maybe addressing it and using it as a chance to develop her relationship with another member or two of Team Voltron.
Season 2’s Ending
The defeat of Zarkon happened way too soon. Especially since then, because they wanted to play around with Lotor’s intentions, they had to bring him back as a cyborg-zombie fueled by quintessence. Zarkon should have only been defeated once and then we should have been allowed to move on to the next main villain. As such, I’m moving Zarkon’s defeat further down the line and will be modifying some of the consequences there in.
P Much Everything About Lotor’s Acr/ Motives
Lotor… Man, Lotor was confusing and a lot of wasted potential. They painted him as if they wanted him to be a morally grey villain, where he does terrible things for what he considers the betterment of others, but then, once it’s revealed that he was keeping secrets, he just… Goes full ham. He becomes Evil McAwful incarnate and it felt unrealistic. There were about 20 different directions they could have taken Lotor – before and after the reveal – and I just didn’t care for the approach they took. So, I’ll be doing things a little different and seeing how that goes.
What I’m Keeping from Seasons 3-6
Very, very little things are going to be kept from each of the aforementioned seasons and implemented in the fic. I’m not planning to keep too many of the big plot moments because they all bled into the issues I had with the story as it stood on its own. I will, however, take some of the small things from those three seasons and include them here. This also applies to certain elements from the other seasons as well, but we’ll get there when we get there.
Adopting Kosmo
Kosmo will be in this fic, come Hell or high water. He is the Best Boi and deserves to be here.
Cut Fic Content
Okay, so here’s the weird one in this line up! As the title implies, there’s some content that I have cut from the fic, even this early on. I actually have some of the Kogane-Holt bonding scenes still drafted up somewhere in my files. I removed them because I was worried that they’d feel too much like filler. There’s also some scenes I started to work out from when I planned to have Keith grow up with Pidge and Matt; specifically including a scene where Krolia and Ethan talk about the idea and decide to commit.
Some of these ideas won’t work in the fic as it stands now, though. I also, however, like the idea of putting it out for everyone to read. So, I’m debating on making a separate one-shot collection of things that could have happened, or just adding them as the occasional buffer between the arcs of the story. I’ll make a poll when I get closer to the point of deciding how to proceed, so keep an eye out for that. :3
That’s all for now! I hope you all enjoy the updates and I’ll hopefully be updating again sooner than this time!

Raining Pitchforks
So,,, this is that Court Verse intro I talked about in the twitter poll I linked earlier. This is a long fuckin’ boy but I had a lot of fun writing it, since I really enjoy these characters.
Just as a note, this fic contains swearing, mentions of the Devil and urban legends, and 2 instances of misgendering, as Orianna/Pirouletta is a transwoman still coming to terms with her identity and hasn’t disclosed it to Sixer/King Dice. I know that subject matter can be triggering for some folks, so I’m putting a warning and ‘#misgendering tw’ for blacklisting purposes.
“Son of a bitch, whose idea was this?”
The question posed was rhetorical and often reiterated. It made Irving smile faintly and shake his head, even as he felt rainwater patter against the inside. Thunder rolled in the background, making his cup-headed brother Rudyard flinch.
Although the two toons lingered under an outcropping of trees, the torrent the sky bore seemed unyielding. The branches that loomed above them did little to shield them from the weather, let alone the handmade box of moonshine that sat at their feet. The rocky outcroppings behind them were slick from the rain. Even the mountains seemed soaked.
“You were th’ one who wanted out th’ house,” Irving replied.
“Well, yeah,” Rudy answered. “I was goin’ stir crazy! I can’t jus’ sit an’ sleep all day.”
The red toon wrung out his shirt, frowning. The bent, striped straw in his head swooped along his rim as he looked down at himself.
Although Irving didn’t pace about or bubble over, he too frowned, brow furrowed. He leaned against the damp trunk of a tree, arms folded over his chest. One hand’s set of fingers drummed on his upper arm.
“Y’think we rushed him?” Irving asked. “Made him nervous?”
“There’s nervous, then there’s leavin’ us an’ our hooch in th’ pourin’ fuckin’ rain,” Rudy said.
“I doubt he was gonna buy any of Ma’s stuff, Irv, even with th’ discount.”
Irving sighed quietly, bowing his head. Rudy picked up the box.
“C’mon, let’s go. We’ll catch our death out here.”
“We’re still fifteen bucks short.”
Rudy had started to take a step out from under the canopy, only to pause. Irv didn’t move a muscle.
“Irv, things’re tough all over,” Rudyard replied after a moment.
“It won’t be th’ end of th’ world if we tell ‘em we need a couple days. Even then, we’ve lived without electricity b’fore.”
The cup toon took the step he’d been planning, then another, starting to walk away.
“We can make candles like we used t’ when we were sippy cups. Bathe in th’ river.”
Rudy flicked his straw, so it sat comfortably at the back of his head.
“Who needs gas power anyway?”
Thunder roared just above them, causing Rudy to jump again and stop in his tracks. Unmoving, Irving glanced to the box Rudy held, his eyes lingering on its smudging XXX label.
“We promised Ma.”
Rudy swallowed, then returned to the tree. The brothers turned to look out over a field of grass beside them, each in thought.
With the heavy clouds that clung to the sky, the night was darker than most. The distant lights of Nib City hardly penetrated the gloom, only catching a set of defunct railroad tracks cutting through the prairie grass. Urban legend told of a ghostly train that had taken residence in place of the old engine, after the railway company dissolved under mysterious circumstances decades back. Nights like this guaranteed its arrival and departure for the unlucky found alone and destitute, or so folks said.
While no train occupied this space, the mere idea made Irving apprehensive. The mug-headed toon pulled out a cracked pocket watch and wiped at the glass face, to give himself something else to look at. The time read 11:59 PM, then 12 AM only a few seconds later.
At the stroke of midnight, the field was bathed in a soft, orange glow. Rudy stared, then nudged Irv to get his attention. Both pairs of eyes followed the light, which seemed to dance across the grass and shadows, to its origin, a cave in the mountainside.
This cave had its own fair share of stories, around Inkwell Isle. Some had claimed it was a bottomless pit, from which none who fell could ever escape. Some had said it was some primordial womb, where all had been born and were to die, should they try to reenter the sacred space. The most commonly held belief, however, was that the cave housed unfettered evi, so vile and conniving, the locals had blocked the entrance with stones for generations. The Devil himself was said to dwell within the cave, and should he find some hapless soul within his domain, they were most certainly damned.
Due to these superstitions and its peculiar resemblance to a yawning mouth, the cave had been dubbed The Devil’s Maw. As times changed, beliefs shifted, and explorers ventured into its depths, the aforementioned stones were removed from its entrance, but hushed whispers still spoke ill of the place and the youth were discouraged from entering its bounds.
By day, it appeared a sleepy chasm, untouched by color or sunlight… But now, it spoke with a tongue of molten silver to the young men, beckoning them inwards.
“...you’re seein’ that, right?” Irving asked.
“Sure am,” Rudy replied, awed.
“...last one there’s chipped porcelain!”
The cup toon took off like a shot across the field. Irving stalled a moment then pursued, shouting his way.
“Rudyard, what the hell do you think you’re doing?!”
“What’s it look like?” Rudy called back. “I’m goin’ lookin’!”
“Like hell you are!”
Clutching the moonshine to his chest, Rudy’s head sloshed liquid onto his shoulders and the ground behind him, but that didn’t stop either of them any.
“We need to sell that booze!” Irving spat.
“We’ve got 4 hours at most before the best bars in Nib close!”
“I know!”
“So why are you runnin’ the complete opposite direction, jackass?!”
Rudy grinned, looking to his brother.
“First off, my head’s gonna roll off my shoulders, with all this rain in it! I need it out, an’ I bet you do too! Second off, I figure if there’s light, there’s somebody livin’ here! If there’s somebody livin’ here, then there’s somebody who can buy our shit!”
Lightning struck just behind the two brothers, causing them both to yelp in surprise. Rudy let out an adrenaline-fueled laugh.
“You can’t tell me you wanna walk home while it’s rainin’ pitchforks out here!”
With these words, the brothers entered the cave and slowed to a halt to clean themselves up.
“I don’t, y’got me there,” Irv admitted. “But I doubt there’s anyone worthwhile here. The only folks you’ll find is at best, squatters, or at worst, a cult.”
“Since when do squatters put up neon signs? ‘R cults, fer that matter?”
Irving stopped and stared, following Rudy’s hand as he pointed. A large grouping of stalactites ahead and above them was emblazoned with a quartet of neon playing cards, each with a unique suit.
“...can’t say for certain,” Irv replied, unperturbed. “But I wouldn’t discount the latter.”
Rudy’s expression flattened, his hands busy straightening his head. He then picked up his box and started walking into the depths of the cave, with Irving in tow. The air had a strong sweet-sour smell to it, but it didn’t take long for them to get used to it.
“Y’were supposed t’ let me be right about people livin’ here,” Rudy snarked.
“Y’know, fer more than half a second.”
“That was a lucky guess,” Irving observed dryly.
“A lucky guess that’ll keep us from, I dunno, gettin’ pneumonia.”
“We probably have double pneumonia already at this rate.”
Despite his annoyance, Rudy chuckled as they walked along. Double pneumonia was another staple of banter between them.
“Triple fuckin’ pneumonia with a side ‘f exposure. It was like Noah’s Ark out there.”
The brothers continued into the cave, looking about as more signs of civilization came their way. Neon arrows pointing deeper into the Maw decorated the walls, as did moving signs depicting showgirls, drinks, chess pieces, dice, and more card suits. 2 more signs reading ‘WELCOME’ and ‘CASINO ENTRANCE’ were embedded into the hanging rock of the ceiling, with a 12 ft gap between each. The air around them warmed, the further they went into the cave.
“You have got to be kidding me,” Irv deadpanned.
“No way,” Rudy beamed. “Noooo fuckin’ way--”
“Who on Earth builds a casino in a cave?”
“Someone who’s real hep an’ happenin’ I bet,” Rudy said excitedly.
“They must have some real big operation, t’ have t’ hide it in here.”
“All the more reason to head back out,” Irving snarked, eyeing the advertising.
The brothers then happened upon a series of tall, rounded steps, carpeted with lush, red cotton and accented with gold trim. Two rows of white topped stanchions marked a path with velvet rope. At their feet read the words ‘TRY★YOUR★LUCK’. Beyond these steps laid a ritzy casino built on the edge of a cliff, unlike anything either of them had ever seen. Volcanoes erupted below and beyond their line of sight, painting the domed walls and ceiling of the cavern with the orange light they’d seen outside.
Dancing on the edge of theme park and luxury hotel, buildings in the shape of archaic chess pieces surrounded the back end of the establishment, giving the resort an imposing silhouette against the newly understood berth of the cave. The main building itself was tall and sleek in design, as it was cream in color with plum windows all down its front. Topped with a reddish dome roof, past a fountain of lava circled by prancing demon statues, and betwixt a pair of oversized game dice, the hotel lacked lighted signage, save for some neon pink cursive above its red front doors.
“The Devil’s Casino?” Irving mumbled to himself.  “That’s awful kitschy,”
Irving stood, contemplating the architecture, while Rudy mounted the stairs, smiling wide.
“I was right! I was right, there’s people here, they’ve got money, I was right--”
In that moment, Rudy reached the top of the stairwell, only to bump into someone who towered over him. The cup toon took a step back and shook his head, only to realize what had just happened. The stranger seemed to have come out of nowhere.
“Aw hell, sorry about that! Didn’t see you there.”
“Y’needn’t worry, my good man.”
The toon Rudyard had bumped into had a game die for a head, a pencil-thin mustache, and a winning smile. Dressed to the nines in a cream zoot suit, shined and spatted shoes, and a pink bow tie, the stranger readjusted his suit jacket after the brush-by, but did so without making a fuss. His voice was sure to smooth over any remaining matters, as it was slick and low, but friendly.
“I was hopin’ I’d bump into you two. I heard y’halfway down th’ cavern.”
“Our apologies, sir,” Irving said, stepping forward. “The echo in here carried further than we thought.”
Rudy rolled his eyes and folded his arms. The die toon let out a short laugh.
“I didn’t say you were causin’ a racket,” the stranger replied. “There’s no need to apologize.”
“Are you here t’ play, gentlemen?”
“Yeah,” Rudy replied with confidence. “We’re here t’ pl--”
Irving put a hand over his brother’s mouth, causing Rudy to grit his teeth against his hand.
“Actually, we’re here on business.”
“That a fact now? Well, I s’ppose I should introduce myself then,” the suited toon replied.
He put forward a gloved hand for Irving to shake.
“Name’s Heath Cesarano. My friends call me Sixer, an’ I own Th’ Devil’s Casino.”
“Irving Biccheiri,” the blue toon introduced himself. “This is my brother, Rudyard. We run a bootlegging business out in the Scapes.”
Irving and Heath shook hands, freeing Rudy in the process. Although he seemed miffed by his brother’s invasion of personal space, the red toon shook Sixer’s hand as well, when it was offered to him. On mention of bootlegging, the die toon’s eyebrow quirked in interest.
“Is that what you’ve got in your hands there?” Heath asked, gesturing to the box in Rudy’s arms.
“Finest stuff on the east end of the Isle,” Rudy boasted.
“We’re looking to sell it,” Irving explained.
“I see,” Heath said, rubbing his chin in thought. “Do y’mind if I sample your wares?”
“Be our guest,” Rudy replied. Irving swallowed beside him.
On choosing a bottle, Sixer uncorked it and took a sip,  hen pulled it away from his mouth. He smacked his lips as he tasted the spirits, then smiled at the young men.
“Say, that’s not half bad,” he remarked. “You boys’ve got somethin’ in the making, definitely.”
“In the making?” Irving asked. “Or worth selling?”
“Hah, you’ve keen ears,” Heath observed. His tone shifted as he spoke, sounding authoritative.
“I’m afraid that while I like what you’ve got, I can’t sell it at my establishment, nor can I let you sell it too close by. Th’ folks in there are lookin’ for high-quality hooch from names they know an’ can trust.”
Irving’s expression saddened with these words. Rudy took note and moved in front of Irving, looking Heath dead in the eye.
“No offense, Mr. Cesarano,” Rudy said. “But we’ve been selling our stuff all up an’ down th’ Isle.”
“We’re in some of th’ bars you’ll find in Nib City, an’ real popular in th’ Scapes.”
“That might be so,” Sixer replied. “But I only just met you boys t’night.”
“I’ve got a certain standard to meet at th’ behest of my landlord. It’s nothin’ personal.”
Rudy looked ready to argue but held off. Irving didn’t speak further, though it was clear he was trying to put on a brave face.
“We appreciate yer business, regardless,” Rudy told their new acquaintance. “That’ll be $3.”
Sixer pulled out four dollar bills and handed them to Irving. Irving paused, looking over the money in his hands, then looked to Sixer questioningly. Sixer winked, then spoke up again.
“If it ain’t too much t’ ask… Why are you boys lookin’ to sell, anyhow?”
Irving’s hands curled, as he folded his arms over his chest again.
“Simple,” Rudy answered, mirroring his brother’s gesture.
“We got bills t’ pay an’ mouths t’ feed, same as anybody. Rent’s comin’ up t’morrow an’ we’re eleven bucks short.”
“Ah,” Sixer replied. “My apologies for proddin’.”
“It is what it is. No need to be sorry.”
“I’m guessin’ you can’t sell much back in th’ Scapes, then?” Sixer prodded. “With yer presence?”
“Well, not right now, yeah,” Rudy agreed.
“We were s’pposed t’ meet somebody from Nib City for a deal,” Irving added. “But he didn’t show.”
“The storm caught up with us not long after.”
Sixer’s expression softened a little as the boys explained their situation. After a moment of thought, this softness faded away, instead replaced with a wily glint to the older toon’s eye.
“That’s a real shame that fella skipped out on ya, but I don’t think you’re out of luck for th’ night.”
Rudy looked on with interest. He had a feeling he knew where Heath was going.
“You could always take a shot at the games here,” Sixer continued. “If nothin’ else, you could dry off an’ get somethin’ to tide yourselves over.”
“I hear that storm ain’t s’pposed to let up until noon t’morrow. You won’t wanna be crossin’ those tracks out front if you can help it.”
Rudy considered the die-head’s words. Irving exhaled breath through his nose.
“You boys ever gambled b’fore?”
“I might be half yer size but I ain't-a kid,” Rudy scoffed. “Course I have.”
“Rudy, we should get going,” Irving muttered. “We couldn’t make a sale an’ we’re dry enough.”
“We couldn’t make a sale, sure,” Rudy replied. “But I could make a wager.”
Irving glowered at the prospect. Rudy frowned in response.
“Irving, if I play here, I could win us the cash we need t’ pay off rent t’morrow! We don’t gotta trudge out there, we don’t gotta get stood up-- It’ll be a cinch!”
The mug-head still didn’t look convinced, so Rudy put both of his hands on his shoulders, turning him away from Sixer so their discussion could be more private.
“Irving… C’mon, Irv. You’ve been workin’ yerself to th’ bone all month.”
Irving’s gaze went half-lidded. In the firelight and neon, the bags under his eyes could easily be seen. All the while, Sixer watched the young men talk to each other, grinning to himself knowingly.
“Let me handle th’ moneymakin’, you take a load off, an’ we can wait this out t’gether. You don’t gotta lift a finger.”
After a moment of consideration, the blue toon sighed.
“...Alright. If you think you can.”
“I know I can,” Rudy beamed. “They don’t call me Big Red fer nothin’.”
Irving cringed, making Rudy snicker. Sixer took a step forward, smiling.
“With a nickname like that, I can’t help but ask; you a craps player, by chance?”
“S’my favorite way t’ gamble!” Rudy answered, slinging an arm over Irv’s shoulders. Irving’s eyes narrowed.
“In that case, you should head on in an’ take a left, then a right,” Sixer advised.
“You’ll find our craps tables real easy.”
Rudy clinked his head against his brother’s as a gesture of affection, then took off into the casino, still holding the box of moonshine. Irving chose not to match his pace this time, as fatigue was starting to weigh on him. Sixer noticed as he looked down at his other pint-sized patron.
“And you?” Sixer asked. “Any preference?”
“I’m a cards guy,” Irving admitted. “But I don’t gamble, let alone in a place plastered with devils.”
Sixer’s grin got tight around the edges as he moved to Irving’s side.
“Aw, wheat, you superstitious ‘r somethin’? Don’t get yer suspenders in a twist, it’s just a motif.”
As the two walked into the casino, the various eyes of the devils in the decorating watched Irving as he passed. Irving didn’t notice at that moment, though he did feel oddly watched.
“I was about to ask you the same thing,” Irving replied. “What with that train track comment.”
“Hah, I wouldn’t call myself superstitious,” Sixer started.
“More just… Aware. I’ve had my fair share of experiences that’ve made me privy to the goings on around these parts.”
“Uh huh,” Irving replied, a bit distracted.
It was hard to blame him, with the hullabaloo going on around them, but Sixer still had to resist the urge to give him a dirty look. A uniformed toon with a heart for a head moved up beside Sixer to whisper something to him, before departing from the conversation.
The die toon looked down at the mug toon again, giving him an apologetic smile.
“As much as I’d love to continue our talk, I’m afraid I’ve got business t’ attend to. You’ll find our bars well stocked and lounges abound. If y’need anything, keep your eyes out for folks dressed like her--”
The die-head gestured to the heart toon, as she weaved in and out of the crowd.
“Or come find me. Oh, an’ I want you to have this.”
Heath extended a business card between two fingers to Irving. The card was matte and emblazoned with a devil, a pair of purple pipped dice, and multiple red roses. It even had gold trim.
“Like I was sayin’ earlier, you boys’ve got good stuff. I might take you up on the offer we discussed, should you improve yer product.”
“Thank you, sir,” Irving replied without enthusiasm.
“Please, call me Sixer. And if we don’t meet again, Irving, I hope you have a good night.”
“Likewise.”
With that, Sixer blended into the crowd, leaving each cup brother to their own devices.
— — —
By the time Irving supposed he ought to find his brother, an hour had passed. How, he had little idea.
One moment, he was being served water by an orange cocktail toon in a blue dress; the next, swing music roared through the halls, signaling the start of some sort of nightly shindig. Checking his pocket watch, the blue toon got up with a start and nearly fell off his barstool, but managed to tip his bartender and head out of the lounge without further trouble.
The joint reeked of booze, cigar smoke, and metal, with a tinge of marijuana and sweat, no matter what room he walked through. Noise constantly rang in his ears, ranging from vapid conversations and bad pick up lines to the obnoxious rattling, slamming, and pinging of an arcade. Top it off with the crowds of people trying to shout over the noise, and subsequently, each other, and Irving swore his porcelain head was going to crack from the decibel count.
It didn’t help that the damned place was so dark. For whatever reason, the architect had opted for interiors that caught shadows like a hungry spider, coupled with luminaires akin to candlelight. This only made the sounds louder, the smells stronger, and Irving’s mood worsen.
The mug toon’s discontent was so clear, it made Rudy pause just before throwing down his dice in another round of craps.
“Where were you?”  Irving demanded.
“Busy,” Rudy said as he rolled. “What’s it look like?”
The dice hit the wall of the table, revealing a 12. Rudy winced.
The dealer came over and took half a stack of chips, handing them over to a skeleton in a bow tie and a bowler hat. The patron leered at him, making Rudy grouse and pull what little stacks he had close to him.
“I hit a good streak while you were takin’ a break, so I’m ridin’ it.”
”How good?” Irving prodded
“Those chips are worth $1,” Rudy said, pointing to his hoard and across the table.
“Those’re worth $5, an’ these are worth $10. I even managed to squeeze a 25 out of an Aussie on th’ far end.”
Irving glanced up, seeing a skeletal, bipedal horse where Rudy gestured. The equine toon looked mean, even for a dead man.
“This is more than enough, then,” Irving figured, averting his eyes to Rudyard’s chips.
“It was,” Rudy said. “Until you threw me off.”
He shot his brother a glare, as the crowd cheered for another patron.
“Now I gotta win it back.”
“Do you still have what we made outside?” Irving pressed.
“‘Course I do! I ain’t as dumb as I look,” Rudy exclaimed.
“Then... What are you gamblin’ with?”
Rudy rolled the dice again, earning himself a $5 chip.
“My soul. I cashed it out for $75 in chips.”
Irving stared at his brother in disbelief.
“What?” Rudy asked. “I didn’t wanna spend th’ money you got.”
“Rudy, we’re in a casino named after the Devil.”
“Yeah? And?”
“What do you think the cashier meant when they said you could bet your soul?”
“Th’ cashier didn’t tell me nothin’. Some dominohead he was talkin’ to told me it’s a secret transaction unique to this joint. Th’ guy looked like a high roller, so I gave it a try. I didn’t have to hand any money over or anythin’.”
“They just… Gave you the chips?”
“No, I had to sign somethin’ beforehand,” Rudy shrugged. “But that was about it.”
“Did you even read it?”
“I skimmed it,” Rudy admitted. “It was just some casino contract. No big deal.”
Irving looked like he was going to ascend, the longer Rudy went on. Before Irving could chew his brother out, both toons felt powerful hands on their outermost shoulders.
“Hi-de-ho, gentlemen,” Sixer greeted them. “How goes your game?”
“Oh, I’m the only one playin’,” Rudy explained. “But it’s been goin’ alright.”
“I took up that soul deal ‘f yours for these chips. We’ll be eatin’ like kings t’night!”
“Did you now? An’ how’d you find out ‘bout it?”
The look in Heath’s eyes was too pleased for Irving’s liking. The die-head, as if reading his thoughts, moved his hands off them and stood beside Rudy, as the two talked.
“I was talkin’ to some domino guy in a boater hat, at th’ cashier’s booth. He’s the one who clued me in.”
“That’d be my buddy Pippin,” Sixer remarked warmly. “He helps me run th’ joint.”
“Does your ‘buddy’ happen to swoop in on every country boy who walks through your door?”
Sixer was about to say something, only to pause with Irving’s comment.
“Awful convenient he was there to give Rudy the news. Especially since you were the only person we told about our situation.”
The suited toon chuckled lightly. Irving could feel the air chill.
“Pippin doesn’t swoop, Irving. He loves people as much as anybody.”
Rudy, half listening to their conversation, rolled another turn and scored an 11. The table roared in approval, the dealer slipping him a couple stacks for winning the bet. Ironically, the dealer had a head of stacked chips himself, his face lined with horizontal stripes of orange, blue, and indigo.
Irving immediately set to work counting the chips. Sixer eyed him with a sharpening gaze.
“So with that ‘soul swap’ you did and our remaining debt, you’d need... 86 bucks to break even.”
“How much more do I need?” Rudy glanced his brother’s way, catching his worn expression.
“10 bucks.”
“Fuckin’ hell,” Rudy swore. “This table’s been colder than a meat locker most of th’ night.”
“Why don’t we raise the stakes, then?”
Sixer said this while motioning to the dealer, shooting Rudy a playful smirk.
“Sharps, get me a stack of fives, wouldja? I’m bettin’ th’ pass line.”
Sharps did as he was told, passing Sixer 20 $5 chips in exchange for a crisp $100 bill. The rest of the table’s players backed away, including the horse toon. Despite the change in atmosphere, Rudy grinned right back, a fire in his eyes.
Irving folded his arms tightly as the two men started to compete, forcing himself to watch the table instead of risking catching Sixer’s eye. There was something about the die-head that bothered him more than most, but he couldn’t place why, and that fact put him on edge.
A litany of rounds passed, but Irving wouldn’t have been able to tell anyone all of what happened. Some rolls got yells in glee, others had people throwing their hats to the floor. Chips went all around the rim of the table every which way, at dizzying speed. People chattered ceaselessly. The room seemed filled with eyes, all boring down on him and his brother.
Eventually, Rudy called out through the clamor, hopping up on the edge of the craps table to stand above the crowd. He breathed hard, face aglow from the adrenaline of gambling.
“Alright, you lot! This’ll be my last play!!”
Irving started to sigh in relief, only for Sixer to speak up. The die toon’s tone dripped with confidence and charisma, as he loomed over the craps’ table.
“If that’s th’ case, then I wager my soul an’ Sharps’! Right here, right now!”
Sixer pushed forward his remaining chips, which totaled to $150. The crowd whooped and laughed, eating up Heath’s enthusiasm like it was an inside joke. Sharps smirked faintly, shaking his head.
“Come an’ get me, small fry!”
The cup toon’s eyes rolled in his porcelain head like slots, turning to a pair of dollar signs.
“You’re on, Cesarano!”
Irving held his breath and lifted his head from watching the table, only to stare at something beyond the mass of people around them.
Across the room, there stood a great tapestry of imps and hellish creatures, galavanting through what appeared to be a monochrome jungle. Stretching high above the heads of the patrons gathered around, Irving would’ve figured it some priceless artifact… If the eyes of its inhabitants didn’t roll as well and fix on him. A chill spread throughout the mug toon’s chest.
“Rudyard,” Irving tried to say. “Rudy, we shouldn’t be here--”
“Irv, step off, I’ve got this.”
“No, you don’t. We need to go, now.”
The people around Irving booed, causing a ripple throughout the rest of the crowd. Rudy grimaced and threw his fists to his sides, midway through blowing into his rolling hand for good luck. His eyes had returned to their normal pie cut irises.
“I mean it, Irv, I don’t need your shit right now,” Rudy said sharply. “Let me do my thing.”
“My shit?” Irving demanded. “My shit?!”
“I’ve been dealing with your shit ever since we got here, Rudyard, and I’ve had it! If I weren’t exhausted from doing all the damn work back home, I would’ve dragged you out of here by your handle!”
The mug toon took a step forward, getting up in his brother’s face and earning more protest from the crowd. Rudy’s expression got dark, the liquid in his head bubbling.
“Well, now whose fault is that?” Rudy seethed.
“You never let me do fuck anythin’! I’m trying to do you a goddamn favor, so if you could sit the hell back and pull yer straw out of yer ass, I’d appreciate it!”
“Gambling isn’t a favor!” Irving spat. “Gambling is you, slacking off, getting into trouble, giving Ma a fuckin’ heart attack--!”
“You leave her the fuck outta this—” Rudy threatened.
“Then fold the damn game!” Irving ordered.
The cup toon clenched his teeth and looked his brother square in the eye.
“Fuck. You.”
Rudy threw down the dice forcefully, making them bounce hard against the back wall. Irving grabbed his wrist hard enough to bruise, but the damage was already done.
Snake eyes.
The crowd let out a low moan of sympathy and dissipated behind them. Now Rudy felt the same cold as his brother, looking down at the craps table. Irving stared down as well, then threw the cup toon’s wrist away, storming through the crowd and towards a doorway leading out of the craps room.
The moment he got a foot through the door, the mug toon collided with something hard enough to make him stumble backward. Irving sat up to protest, only to stop. In the meanwhile, Sixer made his way over to Rudy, putting a hand on his shoulder again, but without the camaraderie of before.
“Well, ain’t that a shame?”
A black sigil blocked the doorway. Looking around the room, similar occult drawings blocked the other doors, effectively trapping them in the room. Irving’s head moved Sixer and Rudy’s direction, hearing the snap of Heath’s fingers. With this motion, the contract Rudy signed appeared in Heath’s hand, which he proceeded to unroll and read over.
“Mhhm. As I suspected. You, my friend, are in debt.”
“Y’don’t gotta rub it in,” Rudy said quietly.
“Oh, I ain’t rubbin’,” Heath hummed. “But I’m gonna need both of your souls, as per our agreement.”
“What?”
Irving got up and stumbled back their way. Rudy couldn’t look him in the eye.
“I said,” Heath repeated. “As per our agreement, I’m gonna need both of yer souls, since that’s what I won in our wager.”
“Our souls?” Rudy asked. “As in… Immortal souls?”
“Mhhm,” Heath agreed. The die toon seemed detached, as if he’d gone through this spiel before.
“Why do you need his?” Rudy asked, pointing to Irving. “I’m th’ only one who signed.”
Heath smiled and shook his head, offering the contract for Rudy to read and reciting the terms off his head for Irving.
“Paragraph four, section one, addendum one. ‘Should the client be unable to pay a debt or a wager, due to a lack of necessary, spiritual capital, souls within the client’s company including, but not limited to, friends, family, pets, et cetera, shall be collected as seen fit, in order to ensure a fair transaction between the associated parties.’”
Rudy’s shoulders sank. Irving stepped forward to stand next to Rudy, though he kept distance between them. He stared hard at Sixer, trying to comprehend what had just happened.
“...so we’re damned, then,” the mug toon said eventually
“Essentially,” Sixer replied. “I wagered my soul an’ my dealer’s in th’ form of those chips. Ergo, two souls. Rudyard here only had th’ chips to cover one.”
“I didn’t think you could wager a soul,” Rudy said, with a little laugh.
“I-I thought it was a steal… I… I...”
“Aw, don’t beat yerself up, wheat,” Sixer said, waving his hand dismissively. “Hell ain’t so bad.”
“I visit from time t’ time. It’s a little on th’ warm side, as you could imagine, but it ain’t all fire an’ brimstone.”
“...may I see that?” Irving asked, gesturing to Heath’s hand.
“Sure thing, kid.”
Heath handed over the contract, which Irving proceeded to scour. Rudy looked to Sixer with wide, sad eyes, mouth faintly open as if he was trying to protest. Sixer averted his gaze from the cup toon, opting for Irving instead.
“Here.”
Irving pressed his finger next to another paragraph and turned the paper Sixer’s way, then back to himself, to read.
“...paragraph six, section six. ‘Should a client wish for the return of their immortal soul, they are allowed to perform a designated task for the interested party, according to said party’s jurisdiction. This can include the retrieval of items and other souls, the harm or killing of another person, with or without a body, assistance in correspondence between the party and others, et cetera. Should the task be agreed upon by both entities and completed by the client, the client’s soul, and any souls hitherto collected, shall be restored.’”
As Irving read, Heath’s eyebrows furrowed, then perked, as he thought on these words. He got a wicked smile, seeing Irving’s angle.
“So you wanna work for me to get ‘em back, huh?”
“Yes, sir,” Irving said, with a stony tone. The word ‘sir’ dripped venom.
“Well then you boys are lucky,” Heath remarked. “Cuz you ain’t the only ones who got rent t’ pay.”
The pair of siblings stared, apprehensive.
“I need souls like yours t’ keep the lights on here. My landlord ain’t interested in, ah, standard currency. There’s been a trend ‘round these parts of people comin’ to my place, sellin’ their souls to get chips… Then duckin’ out, whether they win or lose.”
Heath’s expression darkened. As he was 6’6”, he towered over the brothers, who each were around 4’0”, making him appear quite imposing.
“Now boys,” Heath went on. “Think of me what y’will, but I ain't-a cruel man.”
“I have it that my contract necessitates collection, but not immediately so. I let folks say their goodbyes, I let ‘em tie up loose ends… Hell, sometimes I let folks keep their souls ‘til their natural end if it strikes my fancy. I also know these folks are strugglin’, same as you. Everyone’s tryin’ t’ get by, however they can.”
Sixer paced around the cup toons as he spoke, fixing the rose in his lapel. He reminded Rudy of a jaguar, and Irving a cobra.
“But,” Heath concluded. “I believe that when terms like this are broken, they require punishment.”
“These folks agreed, like you, to hand over their souls and they know it. The lot of ‘em raided my casino a month ago an’ made off with their contracts, no doubt to try an’ forge up new terms, conditions, ‘r signatures. Those puppies are enchanted, so they can’t be altered by anybody but me, but I still need the physical copy I signed with my clients. They grant me proof of ownership.”
“So you want us t’ be yer repo men,” Rudy clarified. “Is what yer sayin’?”
“When it comes down t’ brass tacks, yes,” Heath agreed. “But you won’t be killin’ nobody unless you have to.”
“Those contracts have an agreed death date, as does yours. When I cash in, the clients will die as agreed, an’ their souls will be collected.”
“How efficient,” Irving said sarcastically. “How long do we have?”
“I’m sure you can guess,” Sixer hummed.
Irving screwed up his face, then let out a low, pained breath.
“Six days, six hours, and six minutes.”
Sixer smirked in surprise.
“I was right about you,” he said. “You really got a good head on those shoulders.”
“Sixer, all and no disrespect at once,” Irving deadpanned. “But I don’t give a shit.”
“You really should,” Heath purred in amusement. “It can get you places.”
Sixer slipped his hand into his pocket, then extended it to Rudy. Enclosed in his grip was $11.
“Consider this a deposit.”
Rudy took the money reluctantly, looking at Sixer with daggers. Sixer only smiled, like a cat who’d swallowed a canary. Once the money was exchanged, the sigils in the doorways disappeared.
Irving took initiative and walked out of the casino with long, punchy strides. Rudy followed not long after, leaving Sixer alone in the room. Once he was sure the brothers had gone, he called out to the rest of his patrons.
“Y’all can come out now, they’ve up and left!”
Like magic, the room was filled with people again, all getting up to raucous gambling and other forms of sinning. Sixer left the room with an accomplished laugh, dusting his gloved hands off each other. A moment later, he was seized by his bow tie and dragged down to someone else’s eye level.
“Where the hell have you been?!”
His captor was none other than his underboss Orianna ‘The Wheel’ Romano, a golden, geometric automaton in a dealer’s suit. Her nasally New Yorker accent bore into Sixer’s ears, but he didn’t mind at that moment.
“Giraudo, pal, you’re just the man I wanted to see!”
Sixer beamed on seeing her, but Orianna didn’t return the gesture. The name he called her made her uncomfortable, and while normally she could stomach its use, their current situation cut into her patience. She chose to press onwards in conversation and let go of him though, as she knew he meant no harm by it.
“You say dat every time I come sniffin’ you out, boss,” she huffed. “Now answer da question. I’ve been two steppin’ through dis helter skelter all night lookin’ for youse.”
“Sorry about that,” Sixer apologized. “I was outside earlier doin’ some carnival barkin’.”
“Carnival barkin’?” Orianna scoffed with a grin. “What year is it, 1925? Don’t we have people fer dat?”
“Sure, but I’m a professional.,” Sixer said with a sly wink. “Went t’ trade school and everything. I can’t let that degree get rusty.”
Orianna rolled her eyes and shook her head, smiling a little.
“Don’t suppose ya roped in somethin’ to fix us bein’ 19 souls short?”
“Actually,” Heath replied, smug. “The funniest thing jus’ happened.”
Orianna looked his way, tilting her tapered head like some great bird.
“I bagged two souls jus’ now. Pair of cup headed folks from th’ Scapes. One of ‘em signed a contract but got in two souls deep.”
“Oh, y’pulled the old ‘one two’ on ‘em?” the robot prodded, interested.
“Yeah,” Heath agreed. “The one who didn’t sign was onto me, but the other guy? Pff, it was like takin’ candy from a baby. No impulse control t’ speak of.”
“Gee, don’t dat sound like somebody I know,” Orianna snarked knowingly.
Now it was Heath’s turn to roll his eyes, but his smirk didn’t die away. He was used to this line of talk between them.
“So we’re only down 17 now?” Orianna clarified. “Dat’s good, but I don’t get how dat’s a rip-snorter.”
“A what now?” Heath asked with a little laugh.
“A rip-snorter,” she reiterated. “Y’know, somethin’ real good an’ goin’ our way?”
“You sure Kahl didn’t fit ya with a faulty lexicon there, Romano?” Heath prodded playfully.
“It’s a real fuckin’ word, y’goon,” she insisted, gesturing with her thumb over her shoulder. “Ask around town.”
“Alright, fine, later,” Heath conceded. “Still, though, that one who didn’t sign asked t’ see the contract.”
“No shit. An’ den what?”
“He volunteered the two of em t’ get back our receipts,” Heath explained. “Under paragraph 6.”
A beat passed. Orianna’s eyebrows rose and settled, intrigued.
“An’... How old are dese guys ‘xactly?” she asked.
“21 ‘r so,” Heath said.
“Twenty one—“ Orianna rested her forehead in her hand.
“Please tell me dey got magic.”
“...I… Didn’t see,” Heath admitted, rubbing the back of his neck.
“...we’re outsourcin’ collect fer our boondogglin’ t’ a couple twenty somethin’s,” Orianna summarized flatly. “An’ you didn’t even check if dey got magic?”
“It’s not every day y’get free labor,” Sixer tried to reason with a shy shrug.
Orianna closed her eyes tightly.
“...Heath,” she said. “Why da hell didja agree t’ dat?”
Heath started to speak, only for his underboss to interrupt him.
“We got people fer dat, y’know. Lotsa people, actually, who’d be willin’ to chase down dose contracts for ya at da drop of a hat. Why on Earth didja cut a deal like dat wid a couple a bumpkins too far from home?”
“I know we got people,” Heath said. “But those folks who ran off with our shit don’t fuck around. I don’t want t’ lose anybody unnecessarily.”
“Unneces— Caesar, dis ain’t da minor leagues any more!” Orianna barked.
She grabbed his bow tie again, so that they wouldn’t be so easily heard. Her voice was a sharp whisper.
“Who gives a shit if a coupla card heads die chasin’ down Cagney Carnation or whoever da fuck? We got people all over da place who’d kill t’ be runnin’ wid us!”
“I got that,” Cesarano growled. “But we gotta play this smart, Gira. That last raid got our boys Chimes an’ Pocus killed, on top of a stack of card heads. We don’t know if those debtors are tag teamin’ still or flyin’ solo.”
“Don’t talk t’ me about playin’ shit smart,” Orianna seethed. “It’s my job t’ play shit smart. Or didja forget that while you were tryin’ to be 25 all over again?”
Heath pulled himself from Orianna’s grip, baring his teeth. Orianna gave him a hard stare.
“You watch your tongue,” Heath warned.
“An’ you keep dat bleedin’ heart ‘f yers on a damn leash,” Orianna said frankly.
“Just what the hell is that supposed t’ mean?”
“It means yer not thinkin’ straight.”
Orianna rested her arms on her hips, gesticulating in fluid, mechanical motions.
“It’s a shame we lost Chimes an’ Pocus but dat’s how it is sometimes, Heath. You of all people should know. An’ cuttin’ a deal wit’ dose kids? Dey’re adults, even if dey’re dumber dan a sack a bricks. Dey came here of deir own free will, an’ dey lost da draw. Why negotiate?”
Heath’s expression dipped, as Orianna continued.
“You dink dey can do all dat in six days? Or did one of ‘em give you puppy eyes ‘til ya bent fer ‘em?”
“I think they can,” Heath replied sharply.
“On what merit?”
“...they just…” Heath started. “I felt it, in ‘em. They had strong spirits, I guess. Reminded me of myself, back in those days.”
“If some scrappy kid from th’ Bleed could rise up, why couldn’t they?”
“Cuz—“ Orianna started, but caught herself. She hated being the bad cop in these kind of situations, so she exhaled some steam from her back vents, mirroring a sigh.
“...you really dink these kids got dis in da bag?” Orianna tried again.
“They might need a little help,” Heath admitted. “But I have… 80% confidence they got this.”
Orianna raised an eyebrow. Heath faltered.
“...ok, make that more of a 65%.”
“Dat’s what I figured,” the automaton remarked dryly.
“How do you think we should do this, then?” he asked.
“If I were you,” she said. “I would’ve sent a buncha card guys out dree weeks ago an’ kept ‘em pumpin’ ‘til we got dose contracts. If we needed reinforcements, I’d send dat lughead Iggy, August, ‘r Sharps out t’ finish da job. If we didn’t get any dice by dat point, den I woulda sent da kids as da clean up crew.”
Heath winced. Orianna noticed.
“Ah, sorry, analytic brain got goin’ dere,” she said with a modest expression.
“It’s alright,” Sixer said. “What should we do now?”
“If I were you, Mr. Sentimental,” she restarted. “Den I’d keep an eye on dose kids, either drough other people or checkin’ on deir progress myself, cuz I just can’t stand sittin’ behind a desk all day, drownin’ in paperwoik, an’ hearin’ my underboss tear me a new asshole wid ‘er brass teeth.
Heath let out a laugh, making Orianna smile.
“I’d use dose dorky die houses I got back in 1919 as a temporary base ‘f operations,” Orianna continued, still digging into her boss. “I’d hire somebody t’ trail those cup toons, an’ I’d default control of da casino to Pip.”
“To Pip?” Heath said between snickers.
“Yeah, cuz I’m comin’ with you, jackass!” Orianna said, earning another laugh from him. “Dis is a batshit crazy scheme you’ve cooked up an’ it’s my job t’ see it drough!”
“Alright, alright,” Heath giggled. “If that’s th’ case, you tell Pip he’s head honcho, I’ll handle the dick.”
“‘Course you will,” Orianna muttered playfully.
“What was that?”
“What? I can’t hear you over da sound of all these assholes partyin’! I’ll catch ya later, boss!”
Both of them laughed as they parted ways, with Orianna heading back the way she came and Heath to his office.
Once inside and away from the bustle of the game rooms, Heath sank into a purple leather chair and pulled out an address book. He thumbed through a couple pages, then let out an ‘ah-hah’ when he found the name he was looking for.
He picked up a white rotary phone and dialed the number under the name, the fingers of one hand tangling in the cord connecting the receiver and base. The dial up tone ceased after a couple moments.
“Hello hello! This is Alice, your operator. How may I help you?”
“Alice, doll, it’s great t’ hear from ya,” Sixer said warmly. “I hope you lot are enjoyin’ yer new gear down at th’ station.”
“We’ve never had smoother calls, sir,” Alice cooed. “Thank you. Is there something I could help you with?”
“Yeah, could you be a dear an’ get me Mike Phone?” he requested. “He runs that detective agency by th’ Bleed?”
“Of course, sir. Have a good night.”
“Likewise, sweetheart,” Heath purred. “Don’t stay up too late now.”
The call then transferred over a couple moments later. A masculine voice with a built in crackle spoke up.
“You’ve reached Transducer Detective Agency, Michael R. Phone speaking.”
“Hi-de-ho, Mike,” Heath greeted him through the phone, grinning wide.
“I’ve got a job for ya.”
