LESGOOO okay so it's basically called ennui syndrome and its whole deal is that mechs forced into isolation/away from other mechs start getting sick about it

longer explanation under the cut because oh dear heavens it gets long

so all sparks have smth called a resonance frequency (made canon i believe through tarn).

a spark's resonance frequency is exactly that- the spark is pure energy, and those energy waves fluctuate between mechs but the POINT is all mechs have their own frequency. mechs can't actually feel/acknowledge these frequencies (except tarn but tarn's a freak so i don't count him) and those frequencies are expressed through their electromagnetic fields

sparks emit their own frequencies, and they're constantly met by other spark frequencies that don't match up/obstruct/otherwise hinder their own frequency- this is actually good for the mech for reasons i will get into later

the root of ennui syndrome is that, when a mech is in total isolation from other mechs, their spark frequency starts to increase and spread out more in an attempt to find other frequencies to bump up against. that's also why it's so lethal- the spark will quite literally burn itself out in the search for other frequencies

this all manifests over about a (Cybertronian) year-long period, with slow progression until the last 15 or so days (in which case symptoms rapidly worsen and a bot rapidly degrades away). it takes about a month or two to fully set in

the symptoms are all slow-progressing and happen gradually- plating and biolights/optics slowly start going dull, the mech loses all drive to groom itself and actually care for itself, etc etc- these symptoms are from a spark using the resources of the frame to support itself for a longer time. general spark activity actually goes down, as all of the spark's energy starts to go into searching out other sparks' energy

the rapid degradation period comes from a rapid increase in spark energy, actually- spark activity jumps a noticeable and very worrying amount, the last last-ditch attempt to find something before it gives out. a side effect of this is a mech going numb emotionally/losing touch with emotions/frame and entering a sort of depressive hibernation- hence the name ennui syndrome

about a month before the final flash (what that last stage is called), a mech will actually slip into a literal hibernation- every single part of their frame is shut down to provide their searching spark more energy. this point is considered a severe case of E.S.

it is actually treatable basically until the final flash begins- at that point a spark is so unstable you can't really do anything- but recovery is long, slow, and very painful (both physically and mentally) as the mech's systems have to essentially completely rebuild the pathways that share emotions/physical sensation

mechs recovering from ennui syndrome generally don't spend their recovery in a hospital- they spend it in their homes, surrounded by family and friends and as many resonances as they can handle (it helps a spark re-stabilize itself). mechs in late-stage ennui syndrome are less stable- if you try to heal them with just one other resonance nearby, they will still recover but it will be a lot slower with a lot of slidebacks. however, the introduction of any other resonance of any kind will start to help work against ennui syndrome- medical intervention would be more fluids and energon from where the mech stopped eating.

there are complications/other things that can occur (ennui insanity, ennui regression, etc etc) but generally recovery is linear if not slow

ennui regression is ultimately scarier than it is harmful- it still has a lot of potential to damage a mech, but it's essentially just a harsh return of symptoms as the spark kinda freaks out if the recovery process is taken too fast/too intensely. ennui insanity (which i believe i mentioned) is a different deal, as it happens in the moderate stage and only ever on initial onset

if a spark stretches itself too too far in that case- which is rare, at that stage- it'll often result in a harsh emotional and mental backlash that essentially reverses a mech's personality and overwhelms a processor that hasn't had to deal with extreme emotion with a LOT of it. it is possible to recover from ennui insanity, but it's a much slower process that requires the help of a psychiatrist/therapist while the bot works through the process of slowly sorting all of their emotions back to where they should be

a summary of the symptoms:

onset of ennui syndrome- 30-40 days into complete solitude

small scratches and dents accumulate- self-care is still taken care of

optics/biolights dull slightly

spark activity slows down slightly

stronger feelings of distress and discomfort at solitude

40-180 days: symptoms start to manifest much more strongly (this stage will fluctuate between individuals) (symptoms considered moderate)

plating starts to go dull- slow change

emotions start to ‘decay’- intense emotion no longer felt, mech ‘mellows out’ a lot

drive to groom lessens- larger scratches and more damage left for longer than normal

optics/biolights start to dull even more

spark activity slows down noticeably

180-360 days: ‘settling’ period- symptoms seem to stagnate, no clear changes beyond mood (most dangerous stage in medical interventions, as this leads to less care being given to the mech in belief that they’re recovering)

emotions decay further- over the 180 day period, mellow emotions become numbness

if insanity will set in (a very rare occurrence) this is when it will happen- symptoms sharply reverse in multiple ways

memories will start fading out- locked away, can be restored with time + therapy

halfway through this period a mech slips into a coma-like state

360-385 days: sharp decline of condition

this period is called the ‘final flash’

385 days on: offlining certain

when a mech enters the final flash, there’s no return from it

optimus is actually a notable exception to these in two ways:

one: ennui syndrome takes much longer to set in for him than it does for other mechs (a side effect of having had ennui syndrome in the past)

two: his recovery happens much quicker, in part due to the matrix, but it leaves him more vulnerable to ennui regression/backsliding

(aligned optimus' previous experience with ennui syndrome? when he was out in the wilderness- he managed to live as long as he did because he had never known what it was like to resonate, but as he matured and became a youngling, his spark started to reach out more (through loneliness and possibly a wish that he wasn't the only one) so it progressed slowly. that's part of why optimus is so susceptible to backsliding/ennui regression! he went very abruptly from having no other stimulus Ever to having one of the busiest cities in Cybertron surrounding him! it essentially overwhelmed his spark and he had a lot of issues with social adjusting until he'd grown used to the amount of resonance there)

“It isn’t thinning?” You both say in unison, laughter tearing through you both. His hand sneaks around to caress your calf, while your nails lightly scratch his scalp as you catch your respective breath.

Gaz pops up and takes you gently in his hands, leading you to the ground as he sits in the chair, hands already oiled and ready. You sat in a huff. He couldn’t say he regretted seeing you pout. The unease and frustration already settled in your stomach now had a new player enter the fold: Gaz’s fingers gently massaging your scalp. A short but hard fought battle internally, he felt your pulse slow, your body relax between his legs. That makes one of us, he thought passively.

“I know we didn’t make this easy for you. And I’m sorry. I don’t want to speak on behalf of John too much, but we’re not the most. Subtle men. You could say.”

You let out a small sound of agreement. “How long, uh. I guess how long has this been happening?”

“Couple years after I joined the force. Around the same time Simon and Johnny started I reckon.”

“Man, I should have been drafted sooner, I’d have a boss all to myself to fuck too—“

You felt his fingers tighten gently, just enough to pull your head back and give you a stern look. You gave him a meek smile as an apology, before he returned to his ministrations.

“As I was saying. We’re a team. Always have been. We could have made it a big deal, or we could continue to be great at what we do, work together. Price was just… everything I needed. Made me who I am today. Let me become the man I needed to be. No judgement.”

You nodded in his hands. You let your eyes close as he talked, letting his fingers lull you into a state. Aware but relaxed. Malleable, he’d call it. Right where he wanted you.

“But then someone had to come along and ruin it all.” He said with a laugh. “John and I share a lot of traits, and being territorial is one of em. You were so fucking sweet, and talented. Talked about you when we were together. And I just wanted to sink my fucking teeth into you.” He said, an edge in his voice now, nails scraping across your scalp a touch.

A new warmth ran through you as you felt hands pick you up from your seated position. Kyle carried you bridal style to the couch, laying you down in front of his windows in his flat overlooking the city. Your hair, big and wild from his hands, fell around your head like a halo. Fucking so perfect for him all the time. “You almost have her, don’t fuck this up.” He said to himself.

“We want you to be ours. No rank, no file. Just us.” He said, leaning over you, thumb running across your cheek.

Keys in the door started to jingle. A swish of bags and boots hit the floor as they come across the entrance and footsteps approach. “Hey love.”

Your heart stopped. You’re sure of it. Your eyes peeked open as the power of the sun was 5 feet from your face. Two of the hottest guys you’ve ever met standing above you as they ask you to be… a part of them. A piece to complete the puzzle. To make them feel a little more complete.

Your eyes become a little less lovedrunk, a little more sober and panic shoots through both of them for a moment. Your eyebrows scrunched, a sign they’ve come to learn means that you were unsure of the outcome. The thunder before the storm of “what if’s” cloud your mind. John reached down to pull you in a seated position, pressing his forehead against yours. “You could put a bullet in my head and I’d thank you for it. You couldn’t fuck this up if you tried.” He pulled back a touch to let Kyle in.

bodies filled the house you and abby were currently in. the air smelled like alcohol, sweat, and a mixture of cologne and cheap perfume. this wasn’t particularly your scene, but abby wanted to go since one of her friends were hosting the party. you sorta stood on the wall, nursing a cup of.. something abby mixed for you. she wanted to prepare your drink herself. yknow, cause people are weird and like dropping shit in your drink without your knowledge. the screen of your phone illuminates your features softly under the red and purple LED lights. nobody dared to bother you much because everyone knew you were abbys girl. god, she never shuts up about you! but it’s only because she loves you so much. she also did it because she wanted to make your relationship known, and she’d gladly knock the lights out of anyone who dared to approach you cause she didn’t play that game.

her touch had lingered on your skin even when you knew she wasn’t touching you. she sits on one of the chairs with a sigh and you sit next to her. “god, people are so disgusting!” abby said as she lets out an exasperated sigh. she hated when people treated you that way. but you just couldn’t seem to forget that voice she spoke in. the raspiness made this sorta electricity shoot through your veins. she was rambling about something, but you’d began listening when she’d been nearly finished speaking “—that shit wasn’t okay, and nobody should be treating my girl like that. i mean, gosh, some people just really can’t take a hint can they? i was so close to punching him just like id done that other guy but i controlled myself. and, ill just say, it isn’t your fault. i just really don’t like that. you don’t deserve that. not at all.” her voice softens towards the end of her sentence as she places her hand on your thigh gently.

WII HI GALA!!!!!!! I’m so glad you asked, cuz I JUST finished playing PPT 3 like yesterday and i planned on redesigning the smiling critters!!!! I actually plan on redesigning other characters too, but ill save that for its own post lol. I'm mainly focused on the critters… cuz gosh they're so cute, but i think their designs are a litttleee bland for my liking. I’m so glad you want to see my take on them….
