Tall Walls Wall Us
Tumblr media
Watch an excerpt from Tall Walls Wall Us (2021)  – one of the new moving image works in Pam Skelton's solo exhibition We Refuse to be Scapegoats in advance of the in-person private view on 23 June 2021 at P21 Gallery.
This excerpt features a rare recording of Louis MacNeice's own reading of Prayer Before Birth (1944). Nearly 80 years after its publication this poem by the Irish poet Louis MacNeice (1907–1963) is still recited at protests and demonstrations by peace activists and human rights supporters.
We asked Pam Skelton how she had discovered the recording of this evocative poem.
‘I discovered Prayer Before Birth in 2008 while undertaking an artist's research into the archives of the Society for Co-operation in Russian and Soviet Studies (SCRSS) in London. During one of my research visits, I came across an old vinyl record titled ‘Some Recent English Poems.’ It was produced in 1946 by the SCRSS as a gift from British poets to their Soviet counterparts featuring author's readings by John Lehmann, Edith Sitwell and Louis MacNeice. As part of my residency at the SCRSS archives, I arranged for the digitisation of the record. MacNeice's is only one of the powerful voices of artsts and activists I have included in my new moving image works We Refuse to be Scapegoats at P21 Gallery.' Pam Skelton

We Refuse To Be Scapegoats
Tumblr media
Screenshot from Ghost Town (2001) by Pam Skelton
Where We Live (2021), and its predecessor Ghost Town (2001), are two moving image works by Pam Skelton which form part of We Refuse to be Scapegoats solo exhibition at P21 Gallery. Both incorporate the artist’s own footage from her initial visit to the site of the former Warsaw Ghetto in 1993, and subsequently in 1995 and 1996. 20 years apart these works demonstrate Skelton's artistic research probing the gaps of knowledge in her own Jewish heritage, the ongoing Nakba and the entanglements of multidirectional memory.
Be the first to see Skelton's solo exhibition We Refuse to be Scapegoats in person at the private view at the gallery on 23 June 2021 18:00-20:00. Free and open all but advance registration is essential: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/private-view-we-refuse-to-be-scapegoats-tickets-157969508051

We Refuse To Be Scapegoats
Tumblr media
Tell her we need the wall to keep us safe is a video fragment from Pam Skelton’s artistic research leading to her solo exhibition We Refuse to be Scapegoats at P21 Gallery 24 June – 10 July 2021.
This fragment features Jennie Stoller and references Seven Jewish Children. A Play for Gaza by Carly Churchill performed at London’s Royal Court Theatre in 2009. It was written in response to the 2008/09 military strike on Gaza and contains seven moments in Israel history, from the Holocaust via the first intifada to the present day.
The play acts out what adults tell their children and what don’t. Seven Jewish Children. A Play for Gaza is free to download and can be read and performed anywhere by any number of people. Watch the extract A Play for Gaza from Pam Skelton's research as part of We Refuse to be Scapegoats exhibition resources curated by the artist and Iliyana Nedkova here: https://www.pamskelton.org/a-play-for-gaza/

We Refuse To Be Scapegoats
Tumblr media
The spoken word is a powerful component in Pam Skelton's new moving image works, which could be viewed (and listened to) as an immersive installation at P21 Gallery 24 June –10 July 2021 as part of her solo exhibition We Refuse to be Scapegoats.
How did Pam Skelton create the soundscape of We Refuse to be Scapegoats? We found the answer in an extract from a forthcoming interview of Pam Skelton with exhibition contributor Dr Caterina Albano, an academic and author of Memory, Forgetting and the Moving Image (Palgrave MacMillan, 2016) 'I approached an old friend – musician and composer Wayne Brown. In fact, Wayne composed Memory Rooms, the soundscape that accompanied my solo exhibition Groundplans (1989) at Ikon Gallery, Birmingham. Working with Wayne on We Refuse to be Scapegoats has made a huge difference. The sound is much more layered now and more specifically integrated within the multiple voices that inhabit the video works. He has created dramatic interludes that I think resonate throughout the project, emphasising the operatic relationship between voice and arranged music and uniting the words and ideas of those who have contributed so profoundly to peace and human rights struggles.' Poetry is one of the catalysts of Pam Skleton's artistic action research leading to her solo exhibition We Refuse to be Scapegoats at P21Gallery.
In advance of the in-person private view on 23 June 2021 at the gallery, we would recommend a deep reading analysis of Rashid Hussein’s poem Love and the Ghetto (1963) by Honaida Ghanim. It is from Ghanim's text WhenYaffa Met ( J)Yaffa about the intersections between the Holocaust and the Nakba. We asked Pam Skelton what has inspired the title of her solo exhibition coming soon at P21 Gallery 24 June - 10 July 2021. In the artist's own words:
“During a demonstration in London in 2019, I heard the Palestinian youth activist Ahed Tamimi defiantly proclaim that she refused to be a victim, that she had reached the point of no longer being scared to speak out. Fear is the weapon that silences us. The fact is that we still live in an era of camps, detention centres and ghettos echoing what Louis McNeice declared in his 1944 anti-war poem Prayer Before Birth ‘tall walls wall us. These are only some of the powerful words and voices of activists and artists alike I have included in my new moving image works featured in We Refuse to be Scapegoats.” – Pam Skelton
