hope this isn't too out of nowhere but ik you're very critical of webtoon as a platform and often talk about how problematic it is, and something really frustrating happened to one of the creators i follow. where basically, they put out a new webtoon last week called 'Manny' and it's like all their previous works a horror story, but this week it was suddenly put on hiatus for over a month. apparently webtoon decided, after the release, to review the webtoon again and install new guidelines?? /1

Damn, so I did some digging into it, and yeah, you weren't kidding, WT literally cut A. Rasen short-

For anyone unaware, A. Rasen is also the creator of GremoryLand and Counting Sheep. Their specialty is horror, which is already a very underpopulated genre on the platform in terms of readers, but they've become known for making some of the best horror on the platform through existential storytelling and visceral body horror art. Guy is like the Junji Ito of Webtoons.

So yeah, hearing that they had started a new series and are now being cockblocked by Webtoons is, while unsurprising for Webtoons, still shocking considering Manny isn't the first webtoon they've done that's on the more viseral side, and since GremoryLand, WT has actually implemented age ratings.

I'm not sure what will happen to Manny after WT has run it through their "reviewing" process, and I feel like A. Rasen themselves are just as unsure considering this has never really happened to them before. I think it speaks volumes as to how little oversight there is in the editing process, as despite Manny having three editors, not a single person alerted A. Rasen to these content guideline violations until after the series was posted and well underway. It's not like there's a whole pre-production period where they could have done this review process that would likely involve shitloads of rewriting and redrawing /s

It also speaks to WT's ongoing issues with picking a lane. They have series that are literally softcore porn, but apparently Manny is too much? There's so much cherrypicking of the ToS happening between editors, not just in the Originals section, but in the Canvas section also, and it leads to a moderation process that basically boils down to "better hope you didn't get the stickler for your editor". I understand that WT has to have content guidelines in place for the sake of keeping their app accessible (as Apple and Google can and will restrict the WT app on their respective app stores if they feel content guidelines are being broken, and that includes content depicting blood, gore, nudity, sex, etc.) but again, it's the fact that this isn't A. Rasen's first rodeo on the platform but it's only apparently now an issue when the content moderation has been more lax in practice than ever.

So yeah, it sucks, and I wish only the best to A. Rasen as they try to sort this shit out with WT. Please go read their work and show your support! (*CW for blood/gore, violence, jumpscares, these are horror stories!)

Along with this, you were greeted with a few texts from your non American friends stating that they arrived safely or that they were checking into the hotel rooms they had booked for the weekend.

When the time came for the party, most of the people had managed to show up. The party was in full swing, everyone had a drink in hand, posting pictures, celebrating being together as well as it being your birthday.

Around 10 pm you got a call from corpse and decided to head upstairs to get some peace and quiet from the loud music in your living room.

Answering the phone the conversation wasn’t anything special, corpse wishing you the fourth happy birthday for that day, as well as asking how everything was going. It was a normal conversation, that was, until his breath hitched and his voice started to quiver as he grew quiet, barely mumbling. Asking what was wrong, corpse went on a small tangent about how he wished he was more confident with his looks, how he wished it wasn’t scary showing his closest friends what he looked like etc. and how he wished he could be there at the party with everyone.

“Corpse I’ve told you 100 times. I understand your situation and it’s ok that you couldn’t show up. I don’t hold it against you, but I didn’t want you to feel left out :))”

Stepping into the living room, Jack noticing corpse was there, smiling but not saying anything after realizing he’s nervous. Meeting eveyone for the first time really being hard on him. No one else knowing what he looks like so no one really has a reaction

Fuckkk I had something really long written but my connection failed and now I can’t find it but this is important if you or someone you know has adhd and takes stimulant medications like methylphenidate. This will probably be weird because I wrote the original like 12 hours ago and I just got home so if the other one magically reappears then they will be really different.

Basically I wanted to make people aware that taking stimulant medications has the potential to do more harm than good. I have adhd and have drank concerta since the third grade and im currently in 11th. I have been noticing throughout the 2019-now time period that I really have lost all motivation and that I don’t really have interest in anything even getting up to eat. And I was like ‘well that’s not alright’ and so I did what every one does: I googled it. I asked google “can adhd medications cause brain damage and lessen motivation?” And honestly I was not really expecting an answer, kinda just hoping to see blankness and be relived that it was just something random I thought. Boy was I surprised.

This is literally the answer I was too scared to find because a) it proved my suspicions correct and did kinda bring a different kind of relief in knowing I’m not just hysteric and b) this hit wayyy too close to home. The part in blue feels wayyy too familiar to me because all I do Is be on my bed on my phone most of tinge time and my parants keep getting concerned and like “go get a job, find a hobby, do something!” And I am honestly strangely alright with my situation, like I hate it but I still don’t try to change it because I can’t!

Forgot what else I could of said there on the fist draft, but onto the next peice of evidence!

This pretty much said that this meds were tested on rats and that the rats ended up losing all motivation to even react when they should be looking to escape a bad situation. That once the medication stops we no longer have drive to motivation.

This also states that the nucleus accumbens is the part of the brain that forms motivation into action and when you take these meds your actually risking it shrinking and leading to no motivational drive.

Also that there are other options if you are convinced you or your child needs help to lead a successful life then there are other options that are not stimulants!

This video basically talks about one of the beginning trails of adhd medications that ended up being a huge success after the recorded 14 months that this trial was conducted, but what most people who do their research probably don’t dig deep enough to check that after they took the pills away they came back 3 years later to see how they faired. Turns out that the my were actually worse and the adhd was too much or something. ( sorry I’m trying to remember what I wrote but I only slept like 10 minutes last night and it’s already 1am so my eyes are shutting)

Small But Impactful Ways to Nurture Your Creativity Every Day

One of the biggest barriers to creativity is lack of time. You’re busy. Your days are demanding. You have a long list of tasks from last week that you’ve yet to tackle.

But is it really a tangible, true-blue lack of time, or more of a belief or feeling that time is scarce or non-existent?

“If there is something you want to be doing, you have the time to do it,” said artist and author Bridget Watson Payne. She interviewed numerous people for her book How Time Is On Your Side who didn’t seem to have time for their creative work—and yet carved out “pockets of time in all sorts of amazing ways.”

Payne interviewed a woman who wrote two children’s books in 10-minute bursts on her phone while riding the subway. One book took 3 months to complete; the other took 1 month. Payne interviewed an artist who works for a ride-sharing company and “lets creative ideas percolate in the back of his mind while driving” and jots them down in his notebook between rides.

Prioritizing creativity—even in the small pockets of your day—is worthwhile.

“These days it can feel like we’re living our lives as watchers, and not doers, said Diana Rowan, a musician, composer, and author of the book The Bright Way: Five Steps to Freeing the Creative Within. That’s because we’re constantly consuming, scrolling, clicking.

However, “By directly engaging creatively, much as we did as children, we can literally come back to life,” she said.

Below, you’ll find nine small but impactful ways you can nurture your creativity every day—regardless of how much time you do or do not have.

Recognize the creative acts you’re already performing. Creativity doesn’t live in a vacuum. Rowan believes that creativity happens anytime we “directly engage with something. Whatever you add your energy to, you transform forever.” In other words, we can be creative while we’re cooking, gardening, putting on makeup, penning a marketing plan, or playing with our kids. As Payne also noted, “daily creativity doesn’t have to look like standing in front of an easel wearing a beret.”

Use Beginner’s Mind. This simply means pretending that you’re experiencing any activity for the very first time. Eating your turkey sandwich. Drinking coffee. Talking to your spouse. Chopping up vegetables. Reading this article. “Beginner’s Mind brings new perspective and enthusiasm to whatever you’re doing, which sparks your creativity,” Rowan said.

Keep an idea book. Jot down the first thing you think of every morning into your “idea book,” said Miriam Feldman, a fine artist and author of the forthcoming book He Came In With It: A Portrait of Motherhood and Madness. She stressed the importance of not editing or judging your ideas, but instead, looking for patterns. “You might find some new directions to take yourself, and you will certainly gain insight to your psyche.” Elizabeth K. Kracht, author of The Author’s Checklist: An Agent’s Guide to Developing and Editing Your Manuscript, keeps book ideas in the Notes app on her phone. “I keep adding to them when someone says something that triggers a thought or when something comes to me on a hike.”

Go beyond good and bad. Judgment kills creativity. Discernment, however, invites creativity and curiosity, Rowan said. You can practice discernment with anything. When something is going really well, she said, ask yourself: Why is this working? When something isn’t going well, instead of saying “This feels terrible. I guess I’ll just quit,” she said, explore: Why isn’t this working?

Shake up your routine. According to Kracht, this can be as simple as going to a different café or taking the scenic route on your commute. The goal is to “break the mind’s resistance to new experiences,” which promotes creativity.

Tackle email efficiently. This might be a less exciting tip, Payne said, but it’s an “equally valuable way” to nurture our creativity. Because this helps in prioritizing our creative work, versus “always responding to others’ needs reactively.” Payne suggested confining email to two or three half-hour or hour-long chunks—and then closing your inbox.

Have surprising conversations. Ask someone you’re close with “a series of questions you’ve never asked before,” said Feldman. For example, researchers Arthur and Elaine Aron created 36 questions to cultivate closeness. You and your loved one might explore questions and prompts like: If you could pick from anyone in the world, who would you want as a dinner guest? Discuss your life story in as much detail as possible. What is a perfect day for you? Feldman noted that “Conceptual investigations and emotional risk-taking can generate all kinds of creativity.”

Jot down your dreams. “Many creative processes and problems have been invented and solved in dreams,” said Kracht. She suggested recording your dreams, even if you only remember fragments, and bits and pieces. “[L]ike creativity, your dreams will become more active the more attention you give to them.”

Ask more questions. “I believe that true creativity is the ability to transcend existing beliefs and conceptions, and that is rooted in curiosity,” Feldman said. “It is the curious mind that wonders about a new way of doing, or arranging, or problem-solving.” So, as you’re going about your day, you can simply pause and ask yourself: How does that work? Who made that? Why is that so?    

“Creativity is humanity’s DNA,” Kracht said. “From the broadest perspective, creativity is not only the origin of the universe but also life itself…If the universe didn’t have the capacity for creative potential, we wouldn’t be here. Therefore, our very lives are both the result of that creative manifest potential and creative potential waiting to manifest.”

We can channel our creativity into anything and everything we do, whatever our professions or pursuits.

LG's 34-inch 5K UltraWide Nano IPS HDR600 monitor is a 4K video editor's dream

LG has just released a couple of impressive new monitors, both of which take advantage of LG's so-called Nano IPS technology and boast VESA’s DisplayHDR-600 badge, meaning they support the HDR10 standard and max out at at least 600 nits brightness for small patches or bright flashes (but only 350 nits full screen, long duration). That is a seriously impressive feat for a liquid crystal panel.

Unfortunately, LG has stayed pretty tight-lipped about these monitors, which will be debuted officially at CES in January, but here's what we do know about them.

34-inch 5K UltraWide Nano IPS HDR600 Monitor (34WK95U)

The 34-inch 5K UltraWide is the real eye catcher, a monitor that takes aim at video editors who want to edit 4K footage at native resolution and still have room for editing panels on either side of the screen. Boasting a 21:9 aspect ratio and resolution of 5120 x 2160, the monitor could ostensibly replace a 2-screen setup with a single panel.

Combine that resolution with the fact that VESA have given this monitor its DisplayHDR-600 designation, and you've got a truly HDR-capable IPS monitor, something LG only managed to achieve thanks to its Nano IPS technology and possibly some other trickery (more on that later...).

As for color reproduction, Nano IPS technology manages to squeeze 98% of the cinema-grade DCI-P3 color space into the 4K monitor below. It stands to reason, then, that this same technology would bring similar results to the 5K UltraWide, but we'll have to wait for LG to confirm this. The HDR-600 badge means the monitor has to at least hit 90% DCI-P3, but it's likely the 5K UltraWide hits a higher percentage than that.

Finally, the monitor also features a Thunderbolt 3 port that, according to LG, "enables the transmission of 5K resolution images at 60Hz with a single cable."

The LG 5K UltraWide 34WK95U will be on display at CES in Las Vegas in a couple weeks' time, where we hope to find out more technical details. LG hasn't released official pricing and release date details, but the monitor has been spotted online with a price tag of $1,500 and expected release date of May 2018.

32-inch 4K UHD Nano IPS HDR600 Monitor (32UK950)

Speaking of "the other monitor"... slightly overshadowed by the 5K UltraWide release, the 32-inch 4K UHD 32UK950 monitor might actually be the better fit for photographers.

It, too, feature Nano IPS technology and the HDR-600 badge from VESA, but in a 4K UHD panel (3840 × 2160). It's a bit more boastful on the color front. No, you're not getting that crazy-wide aspect ratio, but you do get confirmed 98% coverage of the cinema-grade DCI-P3 color space. And then there's the connectivity:

This LG monitor can connect to Thunderbolt™ 3 notebooks like Macbook Pro via a single active Thunderbolt™ 3 cable – no charging adapter or unsightly USB cables required.

This monitor’s single Thunderbolt™ 3 cable transmits 4K content and sound while providing enough charge to power a 60W notebook, simplifying any work space.

This monitor, too, will be on display at CES in January. And like its UltraWide sibling, LG hasn't officially announced pricing and release date; however, it too has been spotted online with a price tag of $1,300 and expected ship date of May 2018.

Technical Dive: Nano IPS

Nano IPS could be a huge leap forward for monitor technology. IPS panels are typically limited to a static contrast ratio of around 1000:1, leaving a lot to be desired in the HDR space. Ideally, you'd want at least 4000:1, especially if you're editing HDR footage.

Nano IPS seeks to get around this liquid crystal limitation by "applying nanometer-sized particles to the screen’s LED to absorb excess light wavelengths." This, according to LG, greatly enhances the intensity and purity of on-screen colors for a more accurate and life-like viewing experience. It's likely this is actually quantum dot technology at work, and it might also improve the monitor's static contrast ratio, but we're waiting for confirmation on both these fronts. We doubt these monitors will achieve anywhere near the static contrast ratios the 'light modulating cells' Panasonic recently developed allow its newest displays to achieve.

Our Technical Editor Rishi Sanyal is very excited by the general evolution of computer monitors with technology trickled down from TVs. Wider color gamuts are very welcome not just for video but photography as well, as current printing technology can generate colors well outside of the old sRGB standard. The real trick is to also get brightness and contrast up (and, yes, glossy displays with tightly sandwiched layers and AR coatings, since matte surfaces tend to kill contrast). But we have no idea if NanoIPS or local dimming is what LG is using to get the contrast to HDR-600 levels here. Ideally, computer monitors and reference displays wouldn't use local dimming (unless it's 'full array')... but...

As AnandTech pointed out last week, that HDR-600 badge requires a black level of no more than 0.1 nits, a feat which VESA believes is impossible without using local dimming. And yet, LG doesn't even mention contrast a single time in its press release, to say nothing of static contrast, local dimming, or pixel-level backlight control (unlikely).

For now, we're left excited and intrigued, but not entirely satisfied. One thing's for sure though, the computer monitor field is getting very interesting, and we intend to keep a very close eye on it moving forward.
