Thoughts on Invincible Iron Man #8 and #9

When I read Invincible Iron Man #8, I couldn’t believe my eyes. A reference to Iron Man #182, in my Iron Man comics? More likely than I thought. The fact that the reference was tasteful and also showcased Duggan’s understanding of Tony’s character was the icing on the cake. To sum up the scene: Tony just got hurt very badly by two Stark Sentinels and is half conscious. He reaches out and asks Emma for help. She gets into his mindscape, which we discover is a snowy alley full with empty bottles and sad tags on the walls.

“No way out, safe, hope”. This is the melodrama I want to see in my Iron Man comics. I also loved that Emma didn’t dismiss Tony’s trauma: “It’s real, but it’s not what’s happening right now.” She helps him get out of this flashback/mindspace, and the fight goes on.

There’s this beautiful panel where Tony surrenders his suit to save Emma:

Look at it!! Look at the colours! Look at the lines! The motion!

Anyways. Tony manages to get Emma away from the fight, taunts Feilong to kill him. Then in issue #9, he refuses Steve’s help when he arrives (because he needs to be alone and he wants to protect his friends) and then he meets up with Emma in the sewers, runs back to his workshop to make her a ring to conceal her from Orchis, and comes back to her. He also bandages his own injuries.

He gets down to the sewers again, and gets into an argument with Emma about his and her actions (or lack thereof) against Orchis/Feilong. And then…

Tony has a panic attack. Which I think is the first time, ever, we see this happening explicitly in an Iron Man comic (I’m happy to be proved wrong). He has a panic attack because everything is going to hell and Rhodey is getting hurt in prison and Feilong is trying to kill Rhodey and Tony. Tony is hurting, physically and mentally, and Duggan does not shy away from showing that. I think that Frigeri made an excellent job in drawing Tony so angry and literally foaming at the mouth: he’s not doing well, his emotions are all over the place. He cries (!!) and asks for help, again. I’m really surprised that Tony asks for help twice in as many issues. Is it because he trusts Emma to calm his mind? Is it easier for him to ask her instead of his friends because it’s less personal? Or is he so desperate that there is no other way? I don’t know. Regardless, it’s interesting.

This time, Emma brings him to his happy place:

His happy place, his “idealistic self-image”, is him surrounded by the Iron Man armours. Emma’s comment about there being less unsavoury people and “tramps” than she’d expected pleased my vindicative heart. But more importantly: last issue, we got to see Tony’s worst mindscape, where he falls into when everything is going to hell and he’s dying. And it was him, alone, in the snow, surrounded by his biggest weakness and fear: alcoholism. In this issue, we see his happy place, which is essentially: Iron Man. What Tony loves most about himself is Iron Man, what he hates most is his alcoholism. AAAAAAAA. This is such quintessential Tony. It’s him. I think I haven’t seen such a good characterization in Iron Man comics in a decade. I still barely believe it.

The following panels set up Tony and Emma’s alliance for the upcoming comics. Judging from the solicits for IIM 12 and 13, they’re going to be a team for at least until those issues, and maybe further.

Emma’s ruthlessness and Tony’s genius can make for a deadly combo. They’re not playing around. I hope we will see them shine together. I can’t wait for them to give Feilong and Orchis what they deserve. Also, note the way they phrase their alliance: “To their deaths.” Add to that the way they are framed, both dressed sharply and facing each other like that, and my mind immediately made the connection to wedding vows: “Until death do us part”. Am I reading too much into it, or was this intentional from Duggan and Frigeri? Maybe future wil tell.

To end this long post, here are unrelated thoughts:

1. I love the current trend of Avengers actively helping Mutants fight against Orchis. We have Tony, of course, but also Steve who reformed the Uncanny Avengers to fight against Orchis; Thor just saved a mutant in Immortal Thor #1, we’ve had mentions of Vision, Reed and T’Challa helping on the information side… It’s great. Between AXE Judgment Day and Fall of X, it seems that Marvel writers/editorial have decided to stop pitting the X-men and Avengers against each other. Let’s hope it stays that way. Avengers help everyone, and it’s nice to finally see it even in x-men books. Also, it gives us awesome panels:

Hi QQ - I was going through your comics reading lists (these are AMAZING THANK YOU, I've been reading Avengers since the 90s but was never great at keeping up with it consistently/linearly. My Q: Is there an issue where Tony *reacts* to Steve coming back to life after Civil War? There doesn't seem to be anything in Stark: Disassembled, or in the main Avengers run... after all the crying and angst post-CW, you'd think there'd be... something? A breakdown? Did I miss the issue where that happened?

Okay, so. This doesn't happen, because it can't happen, logistically speaking. The very end of Stark Disassembled, in fact, explains why this isn't happening. The tl;dr version is that we don't get a reaction from Tony -- at least, not a reaction in which he is meaningfully aware that Steve has actually come back to life in the way you want him to be aware of it -- because the time period covered by the brain deletion includes Tony's entire memory of Steve's death.

This is why fanfiction exists.

Having said that, you will also probably really enjoy Avengers/invaders if you have not read it, for reasons I will explain.

So, at the end of World's Most Wanted (IIM #19), Tony deletes his brain to keep the SHRA database out of Norman Osborn's hands, because Osborn wants to find out people's identities (okay, probably mostly Spider-Man) and hurt them. Since Tony's brain is a computer now, thanks to Extremis, it's just a matter of... well, deleting his entire brain.

At this point in canon, Steve is still dead. Technically Tony should know this, but thanks to the amnesia (which progresses in severity throughout the arc), it seems possible that Tony has forgotten this as early as IIM #17:

That doesn't seem like a guy who remembers Captain America is dead, is what I'm saying.

Anyway, at the end of #19, the last of the brain delete happens, Norman Osborn beats Tony's face in, and Tony falls into a coma.

The subsequent arc, Stark Disassembled (IIM #20-24) is about the process of bringing Tony back, healing him, and restoring his memory. He gets the RT implanted in his chest to control some of the autonomic functions of his brainstem, which is no longer functional. They also have to restore his memory, literally, from an earlier backup of his brain that Extremis made. Tony has left his friends instructions for how to do this.

In the middle of this, Steve comes back to life (in Captain America Reborn) and we see him in IIM #21 joining the rest of Tony's remaining friends in helping bring Tony back to consciousness:

So Strange has to journey with Tony through Tony's mind and at one point everyone has to defeat Ghost, and that happens, and #24 is the end of the arc.

At the very end of #24 is when everyone learns that Tony's brain backup isn't as current as they would have liked it to be -- specifically because Tony's reaction to the news of Steve being alive isn't what it should have been if his memory were complete. Steve's talking with Tony's doctor, and the doctor tells Steve that he mentioned to Tony that Steve was around... and Tony didn't seem at all surprised to hear that Steve was alive again.

Whoops.

Essentially, the backup of Tony's brain, that has now become Tony's current set of memories, was made before Steve died -- before Civil War even started. Fandom tends to assume it was probably made shortly after the initial Extremis installation. So Tony doesn't think it's surprising that Steve is alive again because, as far as Tony is subjectively concerned, Steve has always been alive. The last thing he remembers about Steve is that Steve was alive (and that they were running the New Avengers together and everything was happy), and when he wakes up, Steve is alive again, and so to Tony that seems fine. That seems normal. He doesn't remember Civil War. He doesn't remember Steve dying or Steve coming back. And he never will.

Now, this doesn't mean that Tony isn't upset about finding this out. He's very upset. In fact, the next (and final) page of #24 gives us Tony's reaction to reading all the news from the period of time he no longer remembers.

So, yeah, Tony's not taking this well.

But Tony no longer has experiential memories of this period of time (Civil War). He doesn't know what it's like to see Steve alive again after Steve being dead because he doesn't have the memory of Steve being dead. We'll never get that reaction from him. This is what canon-divergent AU fanfiction is for, and there's a bunch of fic that brings Steve back early so we can all experience this. (I wrote one! That's what my fic Double Time was. A lot of fandom has written them, and they're not as popular a subject these days but there are a lot of classic 616 CW fix-it fics about this.)

(Also, weirdly, Tony's AI in Secret Empire has a conversation with Hydra Steve that strongly suggests that he, the AI, remembers The Confession. Which really shouldn't be possible; I suspect a lot of Marvel writers have actually forgotten the amnesia happens.)

With that having been said, Avengers/Invaders is absolutely the comic book you want to read because it is the closest you will ever get to canon giving you the thing you want. It's a 12-issue miniseries that takes place after Civil War, while Tony is still the Director of SHIELD and Steve is still dead.

So for complicated plot reasons that basically come down to "everyone is really sad that Steve is dead," they... get a Steve back. But not their Steve. He gets plucked right out of World War II and brought to the present, along with the rest of the Invaders. So Tony gets to meet a Steve who is alive while Tony remembers that Steve died.

Tony's reaction to the news of Steve being alive, here in Avengers/Invaders #1, is to lock himself in a room staring at pictures of Steve:

Definitely psychologically healthy! We're doing great!

Actually, no, he's really not okay. He blames himself for Steve's death, and he is depressed and grief-stricken, and this situation is making him a lot worse. Because not only does this Steve not know him, they can't tell Steve (or any of the Invaders) anything. Since time-travel is involved, they can't give Steve any knowledge of the future. Tony can't tell Steve he knows him. Plus, Tony actually has to fight him to bring him in, which really messes Tony up.

In a scene that gets my vote for One of The Most Painful Things I Have Read In A Comic, there's a conversation Tony has with Steve in Avengers/Invaders #5. The Invaders have been assuming that this is actually some kind of secret Nazi trap, and so Tony has the job of sitting Steve down -- tying him to a chair, actually -- and telling him that, no, really, he's in the future, and sorry, he can't give him any details about it. He can't let Steve change the past.

So Steve doesn't take this at all well.

Steve tells Tony he's wrong, and he correctly reads Tony as feeling guilty about something, and he looks at him and asks him, "Who'd you kill to get where you are?"

This is, of course, probably the absolute worst thing Tony could ever hear from Steve. Oh, the angst. I love it.

Eventually Tony pulls himself together and tells him that, yeah, he got a friend of his killed and he feels guilty about it and he wishes he could change the past, but he can't, and so he can't let Steve change the past either.

This is when this Steve starts to trust him.

Later on, there's a nice scene where Steve expresses sympathy for Tony, having been told about Civil War -- it must have been hard for Tony to do what he thought was right, Steve says -- but it's clear he doesn't know any of the details and he certainly doesn't know it was him and none of this can be the absolution Tony wants, but it's the closest thing he's going to be able to get.

And of course, after World's Most Wanted, Tony doesn't remember any of this either -- he doesn't remember anything about Civil War or the period afterward, until he wakes up right after Steve comes back. So this is also all gone.

So, yeah. You can't get exactly what you want in canon, but you can read a bunch of fanfiction about it, and you should really read Avengers/Invaders. Hope that helps!

this a genq but I think I may have delusions. I'm not sure though, how would you categorize this. I have severe ocd in the form of death anxiety and I constantly have these vivid imaginations of my friends and family dying and they don't ever go away unless I say a phrase or do like 20 tarot readings. On top of that I get strong fears of horror movies to the point where I feel like some monster or murderer is trying to break into my house, and the slightest wind knocking on my door freaks me out and I imagine these bizzare situations that feel real. Is that a delusion, or is that just like strong phobia. I don't want to misuse the term delusion. I have been told that it is just my ocd giving me a very gorey and scary hyper imagination. It doesn't help that when I was a kid, I had online adult friends telling me that ghostly shadow monsters were real which made me scared of going near shadows. Oh, also when people leave me on read, I get these strong thoughts taht they are abandoning me but I'm not sure if tahts just abandonment issues overthinking or if its actual delusions of percieved abandonment. I can tell that all these thoughts are just paranoia, yet they feel very real which makes me wonder if maybe I am experiencing delusions without even realising it.

think it depends on whether or not you genuinely believe in these things and that they are 100% happening, for example i genuinely believe that im a walking corpse, that everyone is out to get me always, that i can read ppls thoughts, that the world makes things happen For Me, that theres a tapeworm in my body, and that everyone wants to fuck me (i dont want to fuck them back tho. sad!). like i know it may seem like i dont genuinely believe these things but i do and they feel 100% real to me, realer than the actual facts in fact, its just that im aware that logically speaking these things arent Actually true so i act like they arent even if in my mind they are

if yyour fear is of something that Could Theoretically happen rather than something that is 100% happening then it might be a severe phobia/ocd symptom rather than a delusion, this doesnt diminish your experiences in any way and you may even benefit from learning about the coping mechanisms that delusional ppl use but if such is the case then they probably arent delusions

he literally almost wins, or just flat out does. he'd just stay invisible for most of the time, and if there wasn't a tracker in his arm, then the game makers would be entirely powerless to stop him from just fucking off in some tree until it all ends. one of my more battle adept sonas, but i don't think he'd even be involved in the games in the first place considering he's almost a hundred years old. bonus; if he ever met katniss he'd make a comment about how similar she looked to a certain mutant he knew back home

I JUST REALIZED SOMWTHING ABOUT TMA

Iim on season four, just recently finished 131, and I realized something about the end of season three.

During the Unknowing, one of the members of Breekon and Hope is killed, right? Well in 128, the voice credits show that it was Breekon giving the staement, right?

This means Hope died in the end of season 3.

HOPE. Dies. I refuse to belive that this is a mere coincidence. I, again, am only on 131, but I have unfortunatly gotten spoilers for parts of seasons 4/5 (TMA wiki is a blessing and a curse), and it seems like this fact is in fact foreshadowing.

Martin is drawing away, and even directly following Hope dying, both Tim and Daisy are removed from the picture, which yeah. not to mention... season five.

I just had this realization and had to share, I dont know if anyone else noticed this fact.

Hi, Some fans seem to think that S6 it will be Nick and June season, are you agree? And iIm dying to see them together and I'm dying to see them having many hot scenes. Do you think there are any hopes for S6?

Hey!

While we're not confident enough to say that s6 will be "the June and Nick show", we do feel very confident that it will feel more like s4 and less like s3 & s5. So a good amount of Osblaine, but not a huge amount. The scenes that we will get will be filled with love and longing and of course angst. Hopefully with some happiness as well- they deserve it! We'd love for things to get back to a s1 & s2 level, but we're not holding out hope for that sadly. But who knows, maybe they'll surprise us! It's certainly not impossible.

We're also dying to see them together and dying for some hot scenes as well! We've really been deprived and have suffered through s5 and this long break without them. It's still very striking to think that the last time we got a love scene was 2x02! And it's been almost two years since that glorious kiss in 4x10. We think that there's a decent chance of a good love scene for Osblaine, but we're currently sitting at about 50/50 as to whether it will happen or not. We feel very confident though that we'll get to see them kiss and that it will be a real kiss and not some strange fantasy kiss like we got in s5.
