Mark Lee having a bad day was a rare commodity. The athlete was seldom seen with his brown eyes aimed to the floor and a frown stitched onto his face. No, he was usually spotted with a bright sparkle in his irises, a grin that was way too wide for his small and handsome face, his hockey gear tucked in under his arm, and most importantly, you. 

Maybe that was the stark difference between Mark’s drastic moods. You weren’t present at the home game that just finished. On top of it being midterms week, an ultimate stressor on its own, you skipped out on today’s game in favor of finishing a midterm project with a partner that may or may not have been putting some moves on you. Hearing that news after basically bombing his Biology exam that was worth twenty perfect of his grade just added onto his sullen behavior. Instead of focusing on the game, Mark’s mind was void of the strategized plays and off the ice, floating all the way down to the campus library–where you were.

Mark really shouldn’t be upset. He should’ve been proud that you put your grades first instead of a game. After all, you weren’t a student athlete; this game shouldn’t mean a thing to you.  But it was his game. You were his lucky charm. You always have been and you always will be. 

Sure, others showed up to the games with his number painted onto their cheeks in their university colors and poster boards that displayed his name but they weren’t you. You weren’t the one in the crowd with the pretty, mismatched ribbons in their hair or screaming his name as he scored a goal. You weren’t there, drowning in his away game jersey like you usually were. You were drowning in school work with a guy that would not leave you alone. 

“It’s fine,” you said. “I just have to stick it out until the end of the week and it’ll be okay. I notified my professor and we’re meeting up in their office so I’m not left alone with the guy.”

“Yeah but–”

“Go and score a goal for me,” you hushed Mark, pressing a manicured finger to his lips when he tried to push back. “Promise?”

Mark’s frown grew. “But–”

“Ah,” you replied, adding more pressure to his lips. Raising your free hand, you brought your pinky towards him. “Promise?”

Mark sighed in defeat, linking his pinky with yours. He shook your intertwined hands. “Promise.”

Knowing you won, you grinned. “That’s my Marky. Now, go! I’ll see you tomorrow! You’ll be fine without me.”

But he wasn’t. 

And it’s sad how reliant on you Mark became. Before you, he could fully function on his own. Now? Mark was seen with you more often than not. You were like an extension of him, something he couldn’t live without. His teammates and friends noticed it; Haechan wouldn’t let Mark go a day without teasing him on the ice. Johnny, who wasn’t on the team, often made a lot of noise during games to let Mark know exactly where the two of you sat. And Jaehyun, bless his soul, always explained the technicalities of the sport so you understood each and every play-by-play in order to cheer Mark on.

He wasn’t fine before, during, or after the game and all he could think about was you. Nothing else mattered but you. 

To top off this horrible day, they lost the game. There were definitely other factors that contributed to the loss but the most defining one was that Mark’s head wasn’t in it. He tried taking your mind off of you but quickly deemed it impossible. Even after he showered, lugged his sorry ass out of the hockey arena and into his car, his mind was still glued to the thought of you. Driving aimlessly around campus didn’t help and before he knew it, Mark’s hands fiddled with his dashboard screen until your number was dialed.

Two rings later and he heard your voice. “Hey,” you greeted, voice booming from the speakers. Your voice was soft unlike the other times you answered the phone–a lot gentler, like he needed to be approached with caution.

“Hi,” Mark mustered out before going silent again. All the two of you could hear were the sounds on the road.

“What’s going on?” you asked with that same soothing voice. 

You knew what happened. You weren’t there to witness the losing game but word travels fast. Johnny and Jaehyun called you shortly after the game, relaying an abbreviated version of the game while escaping the disappointed crowd. They made it known that Mark was off his game the entire time. Your friends made a light joke, saying it was because you weren’t there, and pointing out how he seemed different whenever you were in attendance. You brushed off their teasing but assured them you would check on your best friend. 

But despite knowing, you wanted the news to come from Mark. If he didn’t want to talk about it, that was okay with you too. You could practically hear him shrugging as he replied, “Dunno, I just wanted to see you.”

Noticing that Mark was so close to shutting down completely, you answered, “Well, I’m always down to see you. Care for a drive, Marky?”

He caught the sound of rustling from your ride and figured you were rushing to get ready before he arrived. The arena was a mere seven minute drive from your housing complex, not giving you much time to get yourself together at all. Prior to him calling, you were most likely nestled up under your comforter, adorning your favorite pair of sweats and oversized hoodie to keep you warm. Mark wanted to say that you didn’t have to change, but knowing his best friend, you’d probably ignore whatever he said. 

“Yeah, that’s exactly what I need.”

“I’ll see you in a few then,” you said with finality before hanging up the phone.

A few minutes later, Mark pulled up to your complex, only to find you already downstairs. You didn’t come empty handed, the drink tumbler he always used when he was over at your place in one hand and your tumbler in the other. He reached over the console to open the passenger door for you and you immediately slid in, handing him his cup. 

“Hey you,” you smiled at him before pressing a short kiss to his cheek. Whereas he caught you off guard the last time you went to the beach, his soft lips grazing against your cheek, it was your turn to surprise him. The action shocked him so much, he almost dropped the steaming drink in hand.

“H-hey,” Mark stuttered a bit pathetically, swiftly turning his attention to his tumbler. Bringing it up to his lips, he tasted his favorite comfort drink–hot cocoa with whip cream and marshmallows. The temperature was a bit too hot, the liquid burning his tongue after having a lick of melted whip cream, but he didn’t dare complain. He took another sip of it before putting it down and shifting the gear to drive. 

The drive itself wasn’t necessary to Mark, he already felt a bit better in your presence as you buckled your seatbelt. 

It’s you��you’re what he needed. You’re what he wanted. And you’re the one person that would always bring a smile to his face. It didn’t feel right to admit it to you now, not when he was just sulking in all of his sorrows. Maybe another time or place. But for now, Mark was content with you in his passenger seat and his hands on the wheel, ready to go anywhere as long as you were at his side.

Less random than you'd think, actually! This prompt in particular was actually written with a ghoul/ette reader in mind, although it wasn't explicitly stated. I'm actually a huge Ghost fan, myself! Bonus points to anyone who can ID me in the movie, LMAO

Nathan Explosion

Despite his fame, Nathan keeps his personal life a secret from the media — or well, as best as he can as one of the most famous men in the world. So in that sense, he kind of admires the anonymity you maintain. Or at least used to maintain, anyways.

He’s gotten sucked into the metal vs. not metal debate, and before seeing you perform, he absolutely lies on the latter half of the debate. But holy shit, talk about stage presence. He’s very proud of where Dethklok stands in a concert sense — seeing Dethklok is truly, a completely unforgettable experience — but Ghost is just… Brutal.

Performance-wise, he likes Year Zero the most — the first time he saw flames erupting over the stage, bathing you in hues of orange and white absolutely took his breath away. Any song where you get to shine is a favorite of his as well.

His favorite song overall is a toss up between Year Zero and Elizabeth, though. He likes the lyrical imagery of both, and really, what metal performer doesn’t have a soft spot for an song about Elizabeth Bathory?

He gets a bit jealous if you’re a little flirty on stage, especially because he can’t just swoop in to make his place clear, but he works through it.

He’s a little obsessed with the Era V outfits — don’t be too surprised if he gets a bit handsy when the mask comes off. Or before.

He fucking hates Plushia with a passion — he is convinced that its cursed, and will not allow him in the house.

Pickles the Drummer

Pickles LOVES Ghost once you introduce him, and not just because you’re in it. The very fun, in-your-face sexuality that comes with rituals is right up his alley, and the musical niche they fall into with regards to genre is just… Listen, he loves the heavy shit, but rock will always have a place in his heart.

Impera enjoyer till the end of his days. His favorite live song is Watcher in the Sky, both for the vibes and for how crazy you’re allowed to be on stage; however, he’s also rather partial to Mary on a Cross, for obvious reasons. It’s not his favorite musically, but he does think that the bit Papa does live is funny as fuck.

Assuming you’re a ghoul with a bit of movement, he likes to hang out with security so he can hit his vape and shotgun you from below. There are MANY videos of this circulating online, and you’ve gotta admit — it’s pretty hot. Sometimes he’ll indulge the rest of the ghouls if they try to jump on the train — he’s not greedy. Also, its funny.

He likes to suggest silly little bits to incorporate into future shows — whether or not they actually get through review is another thing, but he’s got some good ideas. He doesn’t mind if you get a bit flirty on stage either — hell, he thinks it’s hot as fuck, truth be told.

He always steals mummy bucks out of the cannons before they go off. Puts it in a money clip and everything, the bastard.

He thinks the military outfit is hot as hell, but also. You do look like a bug. And he won’t hesitate to rib you about it every now and then.

Misses Cowbell Ghoul every day of his life.

Skwisgaar Skwigelf

He loves how camp Ghost is — all of the bits really make the show fun, and he loves that humor is incorporated so well. After catching enough of your Rituals, he starts bugging Nathan to incorporate some sort of spin off the “go fuck yourself” bit, and let me tell you, he’s CLOSE to getting his way.

He absolutely made fun of you when the Era V outfits got revealed… and never stopped. He loves the Era III and IV outfits so much more all around, and will never let them go. (I’m so sure that he’d like it more if he could see past the mask, but he just can’t. Quit staring at him with them big ole eyes!!!)

He still insists on tightening the bolo for you before you go on stage, though. And he secretly saves all of the gifs and videos of you on stage to watch when he misses you. So… maybe the mask does grow on him a little bit, loathe as he is to admit it.

I don’t know how to tell you this, but he 100% develops this weird, pretty one-sided rivalry with Dew. Is it because of the man beneath the mask? Is it some weird lead guitarist thing? Is it because he gets to work with you on stage, and Skwisgaar doesn’t? He’ll never tell you, but either way, he shoots some vile glares his way whenever you two interact on-stage.

There’s one particular video of Dew flashing the “you suck” sticker at him, and Skwis just glaring up a storm in response.

His favorite songs to hear live are either Mummy Dust or Cirice, and he always tries to coax you over to flirt with him a bit… and he’s usually successful He might be in the crowd at barrier, but he’s managed to cement himself as a staple of every ritual. Go figure.

(People online always complain about the giant at barrier though, please convince him to hang with security under the guise of sneaking kisses or something. People are So Sick of his tall ass, even if he does add to the show.)

Toki Wartooth

Ghost ticks so many boxes for Toki, so needless to say, he is ecstatic that you get to work with such a cool act!

His favorite album is a hard tie between Opus Eponymous and Prequelle, funnily enough. The former reminds him of his early days in metal, but he loves the overall vibes of Prequelle — very hard to choose between the two, for him.

After you introduced him to Ghost through your work, he actually delved a bit deeper, and got obsessed with Repugnant. He 100% prods you into prodding Mr. Toblerone Frog into doing more death metal stuff.

Listen, you don’t go on stage in front of that many people, make fun of God and everyone who worships him, and come out not being metal. Like the Satanism bit is whatever, but having the balls to go and make fun of that many people on stage? Metal.

He thought the old outfits were really boring, but he is nothing short of obsessed with Era V — for both you and Papa alike. He desperately wants a replica of Papa’s military jacket.

His favorite album overall is probably Infestissumam, but he’s also partial to Opus Eponymous. He’s been begging you to get talk Trickery Feet into getting Idolatrine on the setlist since you got him into Ghost — hell, if he ever gets the motivation to actually record Planet Piss, he’d love to do a cover of it.

Although his favorite songs to see live are probably either Mummy Dust or — after the LA show — Twenties. Twenties slides in very quick as his number one after the LA show.

He gets into arguments online about your characterization in fandom spaces, I’m sorry. He does indeed read fanfic, and he will be leaving “they would not fucking say that” comments.

He likes to banter back and forth at night about what your role would be in the clergy if you know, the whole bit was real. For someone who doesn’t give a fuck about religion, he actually puts a lot of thought into this.

What to watch during the writer's strike:

Don't pay attention to companies who blame writers for delayed movies and television shows! The WGA strike comes from people who are trying to make things better - not only for themselves and other writers, but the films and tv shows we all love.

While we wait for a resolution, I thought I would share some existing television shows that I enjoy. I didn't bother with too much well-known stuff. Instead, I focused on shows I feel many people missed because of the glut of content that all premiered at once over the last few years. (I may make another one of these for movies later on, but this one is about tv.)

Netflix:

The Good Place (2016-2020) - A 'bad' woman is accidentally sent to heaven. She and her moral philosophy professor of a soulmate try to save her soul by making her a better person. Genre: Comedy with deeper implications and one of the best endings in television history.

Russian Doll (2019-2022) - When Nadia dies at her birthday party, she's more than a little confused to come back. Especially when it keeps happening. Genre: Time loop drama with a wicked sense of humor and a dash of theoretical physics. Potentially not ended?

Narcos (2015-2017) - The fight of the American DEA and the Colombian army against cocaine kingpin Pablo Escobar and his reign of terror. Genre: Drama with thrilling elements. Lots of violence, some sex and language. Lots of subtitles. Features Pedro Pascal and Boyd Holbrook, if you need some extra incentive.

Derry Girls (2018-2022) - Five teens grow up in Derry, Ireland in the 1990s, amid the final years of the Troubles, a low-level war that lasted roughly 30 years. Genre: Comedy. Some sexual content, some religious content, less violence than you would expect, and the best nun ever to appear on film.

Arcane (2021-?) - Two sisters are alienated when one accidentally kills their adoptive father. Their different paths threaten the fragile peace of a city already on the breaking point. Genre: Drama with elements of action-adventure. Though it's animated, Arcane's animation is beautifully done with tantalizing steampunk elements that will keep you invested.

Disney+:

Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008-2020) - If you haven't seen any of the Star Wars animated series, this is a good place to start. Set in the time gap between Episode II and Episode III, this series helps flesh out Anakin Skywalker and the Jedi. It is also a great introduction to some of the characters and plots of The Mandalorian. (Star Wars: Rebels is another good choice.) Genre: Adventure with some drama. Violence and death are a large part of The Clone Wars, but it's usually appropriate for children. The clone troopers will steal your heart!

Gravity Falls (2012-2016) - Dipper Pines and his sister Mabel are sent to Gravity Falls, Oregon to live with their great-uncle for their summer break. But when Dipper finds a mysterious book in the woods, the pair find that Gravity Falls is far more mysterious than it seems... Genre: Adventure with a lot of comedy. Though it's billed as a children's cartoon, Gravity Falls is an intriguing watch with mystery subplots that will keep anyone guessing. It also features a famously strong and cohesive series ending. I was in my late 20s when I first watched this and I was still invested!

Daredevil (2015-2018) - After being blinded as a young boy, Matthew Murdock trained his other senses to replace the sight that he lost. He uses his skills to protect the helpless in the New York City neighborhood of Hell's Kitchen. Genre: Action and superhero. Features a lot of incredibly choreographed violence. (Jessica Jones is also an excellent show to watch, especially if you think of David Tennant as the consummate 'good guy'. He's got range!)

HBO Max (Just 'Max' now, I guess):

Ghosts (2019-2023) - Petty roommate squabbles don't stop just because you're dead! Alison and her husband Mike inherit a house, then a near-death experience allows Alison to see its ghostly inhabitants. Chaos and humor ensue as the ghosts try to adjust to the house's new owners. Genre: Humor. Ghosts is a British sitcom, but since the writers are comedians (writing and performing in Horrible Histories), the show is done in a style that feels more natural to American viewers. Hint: watch the BBC version, not the American one. They're fairly similar, but definitely not the same!

Pushing Daisies (2007-2009) - A pie-maker with the ability to bring back the dead helps to solve murders. He's helped by his once-dead childhood sweetheart. Genre: Comedy with some dramatic elements. Some of the CGI-heavy moments haven't aged particularly well, but the show has a unique premise and an incredibly talented cast!

Hulu:

Abbott Elementary (2021-?) - This mockumentary series showcases an inner-city elementary school in Philadelphia. The teachers and administration do their best for the kids, but they're constrained by budgets and the limitations of the educational system itself. Genre: Comedy mockumentary. Though Abbott Elementary is fictional, some of the issues brought up are all too real. This is a funny and incisive look at the American public school system.

Amazon Prime:

Fleabag (2016-2019) - The unnamed protagonist of the show struggles through life on her own with limited support from her alienated family and the memories of her recently deceased best friend. Genre: Comedy with lots of dramatic elements. Lots of sexual content and references, some language, breaking the fourth-wall, and several characters you just long to hit. I watched the second season in a single day, that's how good this was.

Unknown Streaming Service:

Black Sails (2014-2017) - This prequel to Treasure Island features elements from the book, original characters, and real pirates from history in a setting that emphasizes realism. Captain Flint and his crew search for a legendary prize... one that might allow them to claim Nassau for their own. Genre: Action and adventure. Think Game of Thrones, but with pirates. Incredibly well-written and well-acted with gorgeous scenery, LGBTQ representation, and just enough historical accuracy to keep things grounded. Black Sails also boasts one of the best endings ever given for a television show.

Recommending fanfics (IV): Blue Lock Special

Well, I've been wanting to do a post like this for a long time… So today was the day. I'm currently incredibly hooked on BLUE LOCK. I think it's one of the most original and fascinating mangas that have come out in a long time, especially at the spokon level (which apart from Inazuma Eleven (which there are references to in BL too. I loved it, haha) and Haikyuu!! (maybe a little Free!) is not one of the genres I read the most). And, of course, when I caught up with the manga, I had to look for fanfics to satisfy a basic and obsessive need, hahaha. And, wow, wow, the number of incredible fanfics I've found! I think that after MY HERO ACADEMIA, this fandom is one of the best that exists in terms of fanfics. The fans understand the characters perfectly (most of them)! And that makes the fanfics I'm going to recommend today seem very realistic to me. That's why I want to dedicate just one post to some fanfics (I already recommended one in the third part of these recommendations, which I'll leave links to below, as usual) of this story that I think are more than good.

Part 4: Blue Lock Special.

We start with these two one-shots. Irony_Is_Life is on both Wattpad and AO3 and was one of the first authors I followed. Basically because she's not afraid to make fanfics of lesser-known, crazy ships, but no less coherent with what is presented to us in the canon.

The first one… A kind of Isagi and Kiyora with a lot of hate and sexual tension THAT BECAME ONE OF MY FAVORITE FANFICS. And the second one… A Nanase x Sae that… I was very surprised because, after reading it, I seriously thought that these two would be a GREAT COUPLE!

A creator who seems to only be there for a good time, but who is not so easily forgotten, and that is already difficult in today's writing world, so…

Oh, one of my most recent fanfics. And while it's much easier to write than some of the ones here, it's still so worth it! It's very entertaining! And it's… deeper than it first seems. Going from humor to drama is NOT EASY AT ALL (and I know this because I've read stuff like this and it usually goes pretty wrong), but widwowilczycy HANDLES IT PERFECTLY.

The plot is simple, but it gets complicated by the lack of understanding of the main character's own feelings: Isagi (of course. The fandom loves him, haha), who starts a bet with Shidou (our favorite demon) and ends up with questions about polyamory and what true love is.

So far there are fourteen chapters out of seventeen (in principle), but I see that the author has a good pace of publication. Plus, you can drink it! Just to warn you that the sex scenes are VERY EXPLICIT (which, in this case, I don't consider a bad thing because it contributes more to the plot than it seems to be telling here by me).

The Mihya Who Calls You by keicros

Probably THE BEST on this list and MY FAVORITE (so far) WITHOUT A DOUBT. keicros is, in and of herself, one of the most recommendable authors in the fandom (there's another story of hers down here, wait a minute). And it's no wonder considering the great work she does as a writer (at least, in my eyes). In this case we have one of the most popular couples (and, look, for the first time I agree with shipping this kind of enemies to lovers (a trope that I HATE), because it gives the feeling that they are going to eat each other's mouths at any moment, LOL): Michael Kaiser and Yoichi Isagi. Now professional soccer players, their encounters become more and more intense and toxic until their final tragedy.

Don't miss the opportunity to read it. Seriously. I was rereading it so I could recommend it and I was already back in the story… 👏👏👏

The Things I Should Do by kaikomi

Well, another Kaiser x Isagi. I'm not hiding it. But it's just that… THIS ONE IN PARTICULAR, was the one that made me look for even more fanfics within the fandom. And it's not only that it follows the original canon quite accurately, but it also develops an enemies to lovers that I thought was PERFECT in just ten chapters (that's where the talent lies, my friend).

If you want to start with the long fanfics within Blue Lock, this is probably the best one (and not just because it's been finished for a while).

The Straight-Faced Science Boy by keicros

This is the other keicros fanfic I wanted to recommend! A story in progress between Shidou and Sae (two others who seem like lovers already, hahaha. I'm hallucinating with this manga) in the middle of a boarding school environment, where coincidences, lack of recognition of feelings and humor, a lot of humor!, are present (currently) to tell us about this kind of instant attraction capable of setting fire not only to the hearts of these two boys, but also the entire school. Because neither Shidou nor Sae know how to communicate properly. And that addition, the author only knows how to handle it in an even more entertaining way.

And finally, these two fanfics by another highly recommended author; focused on the ship that would make you cry the most: Rin Itoshi and Nijiro Nanase. Very dramatic, tragic one-shots, but incredibly well done and realistic (I love Rin so much and yet I admit that I "believe" that he would behave that way with Nanase).

A Classical Polinalysis: Ep. 1

Alright, here's the first in the series of episode-by-episode analyses I mentioned when I shared the playlist I made of all the Classical pieces used in Bridgerton season 3!

The tracks on the playlist are all in order of when they appear in the show, and here are all the pieces that were used in episode 1:

As I was looking into all of these, I started to see a bit of a theme emerge, and that theme is…

It started when I identified that the music playing in the background after Penelope flees Lady Danbury’s ball is a string quartet nicknamed “The Joke.” But then I started seeing how more and more pieces were falling into the pattern. The use of a scherzo (the Italian word for “joke”) from one of Beethoven’s quartets. Music reviewers describing the sense of humor in Haydn’s quartets. Even the funeral march Francesca plays at the start of the episode is kinda tongue-in-cheek! 

So what's so noteworthy (hah) about this theme…?

Well, let’s get into it… 😏

The first Classical piece we hear, Benedict very helpfully identifies for us: it’s Mozart’s “Funeral March,” which Francesca is playing just before her debut into society. And this of course is meant to be ironic, Francesca acting nonchalant about the whole event while drowning out the calls for her attention as she pounds out some intensely dour tunes—the musical version of the “this is fine” meme. But even taken by itself, without the context of this scene, the “Funeral March” is something of a joke. The full title is “Kleiner Trauermarsch” or “Little Funeral March”��a reference to the brevity of the piece but which also makes it sound diminutive and cutesy and sort of takes the edge off the severity. And then it has a silly little subtitle of “Marche funebre del Sigr Maestro Contrappunto” or “Funeral March for Mr. Master Counterpoint” (where “counterpoint” refers to a musical technique of having two or more distinct melodic lines playing simultaneously—the “Funeral March” doesn’t make use of this technique, but Mozart often did, so there’s a theory that Mr. Master Counterpoint is a joking reference to himself). All this to say, Mozart’s “Little Funeral March” has been said to be a bit of a satire on the overall funeral march genre, so despite what would seem to be a heavy and melancholic piece of music, we get our first “joke” establishing our episode 1 theme. 

Next, we have a few pieces playing in the background of the garden party: Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 1 in F Major, which is playing while Colin flirts with the first set of ladies and as the Featheringtons arrive (and Colin seems to search for Pen while Pen watches him from afar); and Haydn’s String Quartet No. 43 in G Major, which plays while Francesca describes her ideal match to the other debutantes, and the Ladies Bridgerton discuss her and Eloise. 

The Beethoven quartet isn't known for being humorous; however, like much of the music used in this episode, I find that it has a jaunty, lilting quality reminiscent of tittering laughter. At the start of the piece, you can almost imagine the ladies of the ton giggling behind their hands and then, when the deeper strings come in, the heartier laughter of the gentlemen. Which is fitting, since this piece is also playing as Cressida first appears on the scene, fully intending to make some cruel quip about Penelope's appearance.

On another level, I really like this piece in the background of Colin’s obnoxious flirting because it’s one of Beethoven’s earliest string quartets (his second ever, despite being numbered first in the opus), and at the time, the string quartet was a very well-established musical form with highly-regarded masters. So Beethoven, still early in his career, was just starting to break into an already mature musical tradition and trying to make his mark there. Which, to me, has similar vibes as Colin returning home after his travels and trying so hard to be the man society expects him to be. 

The Haydn quartet, on the other hand, definitely fits into our “joke” theme. Haydn was seen as something of a musical humorist and prankster, and the way that comes through in Quartet No. 43 is with the irregular phrasing used in the third movement (which is the movement used in the episode)—the phrases are an uneven five measures long, rather than the more typical and predictable four. This movement is a minuet, and the minuet is supposed to be a dance movement, but due to the asymmetrical phrases, one review I read (from Hyperion records) noted “dance this music at your peril.” Which, granted, is a little extreme, but! Nevertheless, the sentiment conveys the prankiness of this piece pretty well.

(As a bonus, the piece that plays in the background when Colin and Pen finally do talk is called “Elegant Country House” by film composers David Arnold and Paul Hart. If you’re interested, you can find it here: https://open.spotify.com/track/5W99XxuEvJMbWW1HrvTYK4?si=019fef5f8fda4d61 It’s classical in style but is a contemporary piece so I didn’t put it on my playlist and or in this analysis.)

The next batch of joke-themed music occurs at Lady Danbury’s ball, but real quick before we get there, I just wanted to note that the Italian sheet music Francesca receives from Colin is Domenico Scarlatti’s Piano Sonata in G Major. (And even this piece has some tinkling passages that might bring bell-like laughter to mind.)

Now, onto the ball! 

As the Bridgertons enter, we hear the fourth movement of Mozart’s String Quartet No. 16 in E-Flat Major. This is a piece that continuously throws the listener for a loop. The beginning has these broken two-note gestures that give a sort of start-stop-start-stop feeling to the intro. Then, just as it jumps into a fast passage with a bunch of runs, the whole thing gets interrupted by the start-stop gestures again. Later, those two-note gestures come back, but even that pattern gets interrupted. The whole thing feels twisty and turny in a way that recalls that prankiness of the earlier Haydn quartet. (And, actually, this piece is the third of a set of six quartets that Mozart dedicated to Haydn, so it seems likely he was doing a bit of an homage to his mentor’s reputation as a musical jokester.)

Then, while Penelope tries (and fails spectacularly) to flirt with that group of dubious gentlemen, and while Eloise talks embroidery with her fellow debs, we have the third movement of Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 2 in G Major in the background. This is the scherzo movement, literally the joke movement. Scherzos are so-named because they were typically short, light, playful pieces of music, injecting a bit of levity and danciness in between more complex, dramatic, or emotional movements of a larger work. Although scherzos were a very common musical form at the time, they do not appear frequently on the Bridgerton soundtrack. In fact, I didn't see a single other scherzo used in season 3 even among the many string quartets that appear on the song list. So it feels remarkable in this context. 

Following this, we have Haydn’s String Quartet No. 1 in the background while the dudebros are asking Francesca what makes her “tick.” The thing I find interesting about this piece during this particular scene is that the quartet is nicknamed “La Chasse” or “The Chase,” and the sort of braying quality of the strings is reminiscent of hunting bugles. A bit of a sardonic metaphor for the marriage mart, perhaps… (Predator? Or prey?)

Then finally we have Haydn’s String Quartet No. 30 in E-Flat Major, “The Joke.” The piece earned this nickname because the final movement, which is what's used in the show, has several fake-out endings, where a musical line will conclude, there's a pause long enough for the audience to think they should start to applaud, and then the music starts back up again. To the point that when the piece finally does end, the audience would hesitate to clap, assuming they're about to get punked again.

This piece plays very quietly in the background after Penelope flees the ball and Colin follows her outside. In fact, it starts playing right around the moment Pen calls herself a spinster, it’s playing in the background when she says, “I am the laughing stock of the ton even when I change my entire wardrobe,” and then it ends right after she accuses Colin of being cruel. And I feel like this is such a perfect use of this piece. 

First, because it fits so well with Pen feeling like a joke to all her peers. Her insecurity about this pervades the entire episode and is the catalyst for her transformation, and the music in the background throughout the episode tells this story, with the usage of satirical and humorous pieces finally culminating in a work that’s literally titled “The Joke” as the soundtrack behind Pen’s self-flagellation. 

But also, I love how quietly the music is playing in that moment. Of course it makes sense that it’s quiet, since we’re outside with Colin and Pen and the musicians are inside. But y’know what else is inside? Anybody who would laugh at Pen. Penelope is understandably upset with Colin for what he said the previous year, for doing the frat boy thing and jeering with his broskis about her courtability. But here, now? Whatever ridicule there is from the ton about Penelope is back inside that ball. Colin—outside, with her—is not laughing anymore. 

Speaking of Colin… Not only do I love the “joke” theme in the music as a representation of some of Penelope's inner conflict, I love it for Colin’s, as well. Because let's face it...he's a bit of a joke right now. His farce of a personality. The cringey flirting. He doesn't suffer in society the same way Penelope does, but Lady Whistledown certainly finds him worthy of ridicule.

Both Colin and Penelope are struggling to find their place in society and end up on the receiving end of jabs and teasing as a result. The "joke" theme is a really effective way to set up the narrative arc that each of them will go through to find confidence in themselves, ultimately shedding the superficial (sometimes laughable) image that society had of them both.

“What… the… fuck…?” You blink once, twice, thrice at the absolute masterpiece that sits in your living room as you waddle out of your bedroom, blanket clutched tightly around yourself. It’s still a complete mess, the floor covered in newspaper and splattered paint, brushes strewn about as you hastily tried to make something work. Tried to make anything work.

Nothing worked though. Nothing and Yoongi and Joon had watched in worry as you nearly ripped your hair out in frustration. It should have been a simple abstract painting for your Painting III level class and instead it turned into a sad little blob of hatred.

They tried their best to support you, quietly giving you food or refilling your coffee when it ran out, and you appreciate it so damn much. They had even tried to give pointers, Yoongi especially insightful since he has his toes more than dipped into the art world… But this…

“So in my defense, I told big titties over here that he was adding too much pink.” You shuffle closer to the canvas, rubbing your eyes in hopes that the pink fluffy blob will turn into something else. It does not.

“You can never have enough pink! It looks good still…?” Namjoon steps closer behind you, keeping a safe distance as you finally stand directly in front of the easal. When you had left it last night, the painting was something of a sky. A very swirly messed up sky, but still a sky with clouds and something akin to the aurora borealis. Now…

“It looks like a flamingo puked on it.” It does. There’s an obscene amount of pinks and some purple swatched in, and upon closer inspection, the blob has little wings… and a face. It has a fucking face that looks strangely like UwU.

“We named it ‘Suga Puff’. He is friendly and likes cheese.” Of course he likes cheese. That would explain the little yellow dot on the side of its mouth. Turning to look back at your boyfriends, the way they immediately cringe would be apparent to anyone. To be fair, you’re not sure if you want to laugh hysterically or cry till you dry up.

“… Thank you for adding in Suga Puff. He’s very… Charming.” You all stare at each other for a solid ten seconds before you burst into laughter, unable to contain all the emotions that you’ve been harboring the past few days. They laugh with you until you start to cry, their faces turning to horror before they’re both on you, your blanket dropping to the ground.

“Oh no baby we’re so sorry it’s okay please don’t cry-“ Joon starts rambling, effectively embracing both you and Yoongi as the smaller man holds you close and kisses the side of your head. He doesn’t say a word but his silence is a comfort on its own. He knows how stressful your art courses can be, you’ve seen him lose his shit before. Sometimes it’s just better to let it all out.

“I’m sorry, I don’t know why I’m crying. It’s so cute and I think it’s adorable and your were just trying to help…” Namjoon hugs you tighter for a second before loosening his grip, allowing Yoon to pull back. He kisses your cheek while Namjoon leans in and kisses the other, both of your boyfriends finally smiling, dimpled and gummy, as you giggle quietly.

“No need to apologize sweetheart. We’ll help you whip up something new, you still have a week. Now, how about we eat breakfast, yeah?” You hum and nod, Namjoon leading you over to the couch while Yoongi wanders over to the kitchen. You honestly couldn’t ask for better boyfriends…

“Do you losers want pancakes or waffles? Or both?” You call back that you want strawberry pancakes, partially because you love them and partially because Yoongi does too. Plopping down on the couch, you lean into Joon, eyes appraising the beautiful art work your loves crafted from your mistakes. In all honesty, it actually is pretty darn cute.

“I hope you know I’ll be hanging that up in the living room for everyone to see. I’m quite proud of our collaboration.” Namjoon nods proudly to himself, a long arm wrapping around your shoulder to pull you in. You cuddle closer, quietly smiling to yourself as Yoongi yells about potentially burning the house down.

“I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
