Ceres-class Missile Battleship
spaceship =>
(description & fiction under the break!)
Video Description
Several views of a large, long, and slightly bulky Terran warship in space. The ship has repeating triangle motifs in with various paneled textures throughout. Near the pointed front the nameplate of the ship is visible, reading 'CNS Temeraire'. The long front hull has a flat section on the top, covered in massive missile launch bays. Amidships, several armor plates, painted bright red with the Jovian Eagle in gold, protect the armored hab rings and a series of tubes. Aft, the radiators glow brightly as the engine burns hot. Embedded heat pipes run from the tip of the engine to the radiators
The first view is of the ship from above and in front, showing a dramatic angle. Several 'running lights' blink down the length as navigation lights flash
The second view is located to the side, looking forward, again showing the various lights
The third view is focused on the engine, showing it powering on to 100% thrust, then beyond. As it powers on the heat pipes glow in sequence
The fourth and final view repeats the engine power on sequence but from further, allowing the viewer to also see the coolant vents venting coolant
Excerpt from History of Pre-Domestication Terran Warships (3rd Revision), §685.8: Late Terran Accord & Pacification Program Era Battleships (Guided Projectile), Eltrin Yne, Forty-Seventh Bloom, xe/xem, Elly Yne, Twenty-Sixth Floret, et al.
Designed in 2521 CE (33 BT) by a consortium of Jovian shipbuilding corporations and first commissioned in 2526, the Ceres-class missile battleship was envisioned as a platform to launch massed missile strikes against enemy fleets while providing enhanced point defense and electronic warfare. At 750 meters in length and nearly 100 meters at its widest extent, this class represented one of the largest mass-produced spaceframes fielded by the Cosmic Navy.
Over the course of its service history, the class had numerous revisions. Most notably, the type-3 revision in 2539 (2521-CERES-III) which added coolant vents ahead of the hab rings, reducing their size in the process. The vents were positioned forward of the hab rings to expel hot coolant from over-driven point defense domes and electronic warfare equipment rather than the main engines, though they had a limited ability to expel engine coolant in extreme emergencies. These coolant vents essentially functioned as expendable liquid droplet radiators, which may have led to the development of more practical liquid radiators, had domestication been delayed. (See also §359, Speculation on Terran Shipcraft Development)
While there were no major engagements which featured a Ceres functioning in this intended role, classified TCN documents obtained after the fall of Terra stated that one of the primary goals of the class was to counter contemporary corporate navies, which largely consisted of small anti-piracy vessels, should a coalition of corporations ever come into direct conflict with the Accord.
However, the most significant hostile force that the Accord encountered prior to pacification were various pirate flotillas, which would generally consist of smaller, older, and less militarized vessels. While in a direct engagement a Ceres-class or other contemporary Accord capital ships would easily destroy such vessels, smaller ships were quite capable of outmaneuvering and escaping their would-be-predators.
At the start of the Terran Pacification program, there were 157 Ceres-class vessels active. After the signing of the treaty, only a handful of these ships refused armistice, as the amount of logistical support that the Ceres required to function effectively and the implausibility of that support without the Terran core sectors dissuaded overt feralism. Several dozen of the surviving vessels now serve as museum ships across Terran Protectorate space.

Hi, I recently saw someone use the quote "Proserpine [Persephone] reclaimed cares not to follow her mother" from Virgil's Georgics to claim that, well, Persephone did not in fact care for Demeter, and this may be because english is not my first language and I'm misunderstanding the full quote, but like, I read the full quote, it is: "whatever you [Cesar] are to be (for Tartarus hopes not for you as king, and may such monstrous lust of empire never seize you, though Greece is enchanted by the Elysian fields, and Proserpine reclaimed cares not to follow her mother)" and to me it really sounded like Virgil saying "in case this incredible absurd things happened, I do not wish for that to happen to you" Just like it would be weird for the Elysian fields to be in Greece rather than the underworld. Again, English is not really my first language so I may be misunderstanding the quote and the other person was right that it was supposed to claim Persephone cares not for her mom
„and you too, Caesar, who, in time, will live among a company of the gods, which one’s unknown, whether you choose to watch over cities and lands, and the vast world accepts you as bringer of fruits, and lord of the seasons, crowning your brows with your mother Venus’s myrtle, or whether you come as god of the vast sea, and sailors worship your powers, while furthest Thule serves you, and Tethys with all her waves wins you as son-in-law, or whether you add yourself to the slow months as a Sign, where a space opens between Virgo and the grasping claws, Even now fiery Scorpio draws in his pincers for you, and leaves you more than your fair share of heaven): whatever you’ll be (since Tartarus has no hope of you as ruler, and may such fatal desire for power never touch you, though Greece might marvel at the Elysian fields, and Proserpine, re-won, might not care to follow her mother), grant me a fair course, and agree to my bold beginning, pitying the country folk, with me, who are ignorant of the way: prepare to start your duties, and even now, hear our prayer.” - Georgics: 1.24-42
The idea (as I understand it) is that the emperor is invoked as a future god and Vergil suggests several possible functions for him: an agrarian god, a god of the sea, a sky god, but not the ruler of the underworld even though the Elysian fields are marvelous and Proserpina doesn't want to come back from there.
Vergil definitely seems to be reworking the myth here and diverges from the traditional narrative on purpose: „Ancient commentators recognized that Proserpina's refusal to return was contra historiam (Probus, ad I.39). Servius (ad I.39) says it is Vergil's invention. The anonymous Brevis Expositio (p. 2I3 Thilo, v. III) adds that Ceres made a vain assault upon the Underworld in the attempt to retrieve her daughter, who refused to return pro loci amore.” - Patricia A. Johnston, Eurydice and Proserpina in the Georgics. Another article that discusses Vergil's Proserpina/Persephone and touches a little on this passage from the Georgics is Nondum Proserpina abstulerat: Persephone in the Aeneid.
Anyways, this idea is still anomalous (though something similar appears in one or two other Roman texts) and I wouldn't take seriously any generalizing claim about Persephone and her relationship with her mother based solely on this source. It is however a much more solid basis for these super popular modern interpretations of the myth than that alleged "original", "pre-patriarchal" version which some like to bring up in discussions, but I guess "My interpretation is based on Vergil and Lucan" sounds less cool and special than "My interpretation is actually how the myth originally went, you fool!"

The End of Weird Anime
What happens to 80s & 90s anime that arent streaming right now when VHS & DVD completely go away?
The obsession with micro everything, everythings a sound bite, everything is 5 to 7 seconds, even songs, the chorus IS the song now, noone else ever hears anything else.
Only sports, reality TV and competition games can be watched week to week in real time.
All TV series now have to be immediately binged and consumed.
Its essentially bulimia.
Binge Loki in a weekend. Binge Ahsoka in a weekend. Its already done.
Whats next.
What else can I feed the machine with.
No waiting week to week. No such thing as a cliffhanger. No anticipation. No guessing whats next. No watching together as an audience.
Everything segmented, everything bifurcated, nothing in real time, nothing communal.
No season finale, no season premiere.
Same with anime.
Its not VHS or DVD anymore.
Youre not waiting for a release.
Its crunchyroll and Netflix and Funimation and Hulu and streaming.
Its the entire season of Psycho Pass all at once whenever I want to binge and gorge myself.
No asking to be taken to the mall.
No driving to Suncoast Video.
No deciding which $30 VHS or DVD to ask to be bought.
Martian Successor Nadesico or Ayashi no Ceres?
Everything is accessible.
Its less for 3 months of streaming anime than 1 anime used to cost on VHS or DVD.
No downside, if it sucks, move on.
Its not even the old school illegal Crunchyroll which was essentially Limewire for anime where you could illegally download different series.
I didnt waste time downloading for hours on my brothers computer for a shitty anime.
I didnt risk getting a virus on my brothers computer.
I dont have to clear up space.
I dont have to waste time.
I dont have to spend money.
I dont have to risk anything.
I dont have to exert any effort.
Its just, on to the next.
What does the algorithm say a Demon Slayer fan should watch next?
What should I watch now that Attack on Titan is over per the almighty algorithm?
No Viz anime catalogue to pore through.
No RightStuf catalog to highlight and fold the corners of the pages of.
No Animerica to read through every month once it arrives in the mail.
No going through AOL message boards and anime ezboards and geocities and angelfire websites to try to determine what to watch next.
No asking to be taken to your local Blockbuster to check the newest anime rentals in the "Independent/Foreign" section.
Just scroll, select, click and move on.
No need to even download and delete.
Its all streamable, instantly consumed, immediately binged then thats it.
On to the next algorithmic recommendation.
The algorithm never ends.
It always has another suggestion for you.
No meticulously going through myanimelist.com, putting up the hundreds of anime youve watched so far then scouring everyone elses lists to get ideas for new anime to watch.
Whats next after Vision of Escaflowne?
What should I watch after Yuu Yuu Hakusho?
If I can get a ride to the flea market on 18, I wonder what else they'll have similar to Dangaioh & Orguss 02?
To Macross Plus?
I wonder if Sci-Fi Channels Anime Week Festival will show something similr to Iria Zeiram or Armitage III this year.
Ninja Scroll was amazing, I wish I could see Wicked City since its by the same director, Yoshiaki Kawajiri. But I know I wont be allowed to. I had to sneak watch Ninja Scroll at my friends house and her older brother had bought it and thats the only way I even got to see Ninja Scroll at 13.
Everyone talks about Sailor Moon but noone talks about Bubblegum Crisis 2032.
Why not? The Knight Sabers are cooler than the Sailor Scouts and Ill take a cool motorcyle riding ass kicking punk rock singer like Priscilla Asagiri over a whiny, annoying, immature Serena any day. I dont care that shes 14 like me. Shes freaking annoying and a crybaby.
I wonder what other anime are like 8 Man After. It was so hard-boiled and dystopian and futuristic.
What happens to 80s & 90s anime that arent streaming right now when VHS & DVD completely go away?
When laptops and videogame systems are discless?
Then what?
What happens when Crunchyroll, Netflix and Hulu dont want to pay to license some amazing anime that are hidden gems?
In 25 years, when very few VCRS and DVD players and video game systems and laptops that can play VHS tapes and discs are still in circulation and functioning, then what happens?
What their plan has been this whole time: we will only have access to watch what the streaming companies CHOOSE to pay the license for to stream.
We will lose everything else.
We'll lose Cybernetics Guardian, Genocyber, Twilight of the Dark Master, Robot Carnival, Vision of Escaflowne, Iria Zeiram, Armitage III, Saber Marionette J, Martian Successor Nadesico, 8 Man After, Lensman, Demon City Shinjuku, Fancy Lala, Tekknoman, Full Metal Panic...
Only the biggest hits, the most iconic series, the most controversial OVAs and movies will survive in the brand new streaming world devoid of any physical VHSs and DVDs.
Only the Akiras, Neon Genesis Evangelions, Urotsuki Dojis, Berserks, Gantzs, Sailor Moons, Dragon Ball Zs, Pokemons, Gundams, Bleaches, Narutos and Spirited Aways will survive to be streamed.
What about the Serial Experiments Lain?
What about the Nausicaa of the Valley Winds?
What about the Angel Sanctuarys?
What about the Please Save My Earths?
What about the Here is Greenwoods?
Will they be lost forever?

Name: Moth
Model: MTH-9L
Manufacturer: Ceres Metals Industries
Intro Year: 3145
Class: Light Battlemech
Cost: 4.677 mn c-bills
Weight: 30 T
Top Speed: 97.2 kph
Jump Capacity: 240 meters
Quirks: difficult to maintain, no/minimal arms, nimble jumper
In the wake of the 6th Andurian War, the Strategios of the Capellan Confederation Armed Forces determined that there was a need for a new, low cost light mech to serve as a forward observer and harassment unit in their augmented companies. While the venerable Raven remained in service, its relatively low speed and expensive suite of electronics lead to a number of costly losses during the conquest of Wallacia. To that end, specifications for a new scout were sent out for bids- the new mech had to be cheap, difficult for Free Worlds League precision energy weapons to engage with, and capable of engaging and providing support for indirect fire elements of the CCAF at a variety of ranges. Unusually, despite Hellespont Industrials, the Confederation's more seasoned light manufacturer, submitting a bid in the form of the Sunfire, Ceres Metals Industries won the contract. Their design, initially named Project GOSSAMER, was delayed several times due to production shortfalls and the discovery of a Federated Suns spy ring operating at Ceres' design bureau. Eventually the mech began full production in 3145 as the Moth.
An outwardly radical design, Ceres managed to reduce the cost of their bid significantly through the use of a number of off the shelf parts and existing research prototypes. The mech's engine was a GM 180 extralight fusion power plant, originally designed for a prototype Vindicator before the VND-4L project opted for a larger 225 power plant instead, allowing the 30 ton mech to achieve ground speeds of up to 97 kph. While this speed was deemed unacceptable for the task at hand, the mech's principle designer, Dr. Oxana Ufimtsev, opted to equip the mech with a battery of Anderson jump jets and used a novel delta design for the main hull of the mech, with very low profile arms and wide, integrated control surfaces to give the mech an unusually high glide coefficient. Together, these systems allow the Moth to leap distances similar to those achievable by the Spider, despite the mech's far less powerful engine. The cost of this innovative design is a frame with extremely cumbersome access points and systems not immediately intuitive to most mechtechs, leading to increased maintenance costs and repair times. When deployed in augmented formations alongside aerospace assets, technicians are commonly cross trained on both the unit's fighters and Moths, as the two repair schedules have been found to be similar.
The production model MTH-9L Moth uses a Moscovia light PPC as its main armament, supported by a pair of Ceres Arms model JX small pulse lasers mounted in the two weapons nacels that comprise the design's arms. Additionally, the mech carries a Diverse Optics ER small laser in the left arm and an Apple Churchill TAG system in the left, imported from Hellespont's Sian facility. Clad in 6 tons of Ceres mk III Stealth Armor, the Moth is easily capable of withstanding light fire from enemy mechs while confounding longer range sensor returns. Unfortunately, to make room for the light PPC, Ceres opted to reduce the size and ammenities of the mech's cockpit, resulting in complaints from pilots assigned to the machine for long scouting patrols.
In combat, Moths are most typically used as long range harassment units, using their stealth armor and long jump range to maintain evade enemy fire as they opportunistically engage with their TAG and light PPC. As the fight progresses, some pilots may choose to engage in more active combat, allowing the indirect elements they're supporting to remove the majority of a target'a armor before attempting to destroy vulnerable exposed components with their small lasers
The first recorded combat involving a Moth occurred on Brisbane between elements of the First Victoria Rangers and a raiding force of the Concordat Commandos. Captain Curtis Bao deployed a lance of Moths to waylay the advance of a Taurian armored colum and allow for his own heavy units and combat vehicles to position themselves in foothills east of the TDF landing site. The light mechs caught the tank company and their mech escorts by surprise, outflanking the vehicles and engaging into their weaker side armor at long range with their PPCs while painting targets for Bao's LRM carriers and Thunderbolts. Eventually, the Commandos' mechs rallied and began to engage the stealthy light lance, forcing them to withdraw, however the action blunted the Taurian advance and allowed time for the Victoria Rangers to mount a successful defense of Brisbane's capital, Badwater. The surviving Moths then saw use as city fighters, their jumping capabilities allowing them to manuever easily though the urban fabric of Badwater while their X-pulse lasers let them to brutally engage Taurian infantry.
As a new design, very few variants or operators outside the Confederation have yet to be spotted. Beyond the CCAF, a few Capellan aligned mercenary commands have been allowed to officially purchase small numbers of the design, while the allied Magistracy of Canopus has managed to acquire a number of lances of the mech through unknown sources.
While their infiltration was discovered and rooted out before the full design was finalized, MIIO operatives did manage to steal plans for the early prototypes of the Moth, which the New Avalon Institute of Science used as a test bed for re-engineered laser designs and new SRM munitions. A small production run of the design, similar but without the Capellan stealth armor, was produced by Corean Enterprises at their Augusta plant, but the AFFS appears to have abandoned adding the mech to its TO&E.
Finally, several examples of the Moth were captured by forces loyal to Alaric Ward's Star League during fighting on New Earth. The Jade Falcon remnant present immediately saw use in the design as a heavier alternative to their light Ion Sparrows. A Clantech refit of the mech has been spotted using an ER large laser in place of the PPC and a quartet of small pulse lasers in the weapons nacels.

Have you done headcanons for Appoplexians or Cerebrocrustaceans yet? If you haven’t done either, your pick, and if you’ve done both, you can instead share headcanons about your favorite alien species or the one you have the most thoughts about!
I haven’t posted about Cerebrocrustaceans specifically but I have talked about them before! Namely in my Vulpin headcanons as I like to imagine them being in the same planetary system! I’d love to talk about these crabs some more!
Intergalactically, Cerebrocrustaceans have a somewhat bad reputation. Not only can they be hard to work with, but because of how they drained their former planets Encephalonus I, Enceph. II, and Enceph. III of all life.
Them being hard to work stems from deeply instinctual territorial behaviors. Despite their highly advanced intelligence, Cerebrocrustaceans simply never evolved out of their primitive hostility to Any Threat to their Territory.
This being where the species’ rivalry with the Galvans stems from.
Additionally, Cerebrocrustaceans have a strong dislike of Planchaküles. Cerebrocrustaceans culture highly values order and dignity, while Planchaküles behave as absolute chaos goblins and achieve incredible mechanical advancements that easily rivals Cerebrocrustacean work.
Their territorial nature makes lab assistances a non-concept on Encephalonus IV.
When group collaboration is needed (such as the creation of the Cerebroian Currmary as discussed in the aforementioned Vulpin post) Cerebrocrustaceans will agree to meet in a neutral gathering space owned by none of the working Cerebrocrustaceans.
Planet hopping greatly encouraged adaptation in Cerebrocrustacean biology. Modern populations are observed to be more capable of operating on less food and more resistant to pressure changes.
On the topic of adaptation, there is very apparent differences between subsections of Cerebrocrustaceans. The most notable is some being aquatic and others being terrestrial. (This is can seen in examples such as Brainstorm requiring a breathing brace, while Dr. Psychobos does not.)
Aquatic Cerebrocrustaceans have built expansive underwater infrastructure that spans for miles on record. Their water built technology puts them on interplanetary interest.
Semiaquatic, air-breathing Cerebrocrustaceans typically live just above the water, enjoying the brackish and humid conditions.
Fully terrestrial variants seemingly instead push themselves as high above the water as they can manage, many apparently believing this to be proof of their higher advancements to their cousins.
There are five united societies on Encephalonus IV. Two of these are fully aquatic, two semiaquatic, and one fully terrestrial. When planet wide matters are up for discussion, representatives from each of these five nations meet on unowned territories and attempt to reach the most mutually beneficial agreement.
Cerebrocrustaceans do not care for their offspring. Eggs are laid and left. Newborns will hatch and fight for rugged survival until their brains have developed enough to join proper society.
There is no social concept of romance in Cerebrocrustacean culture. Reproduction exists as a part of a natural cycle, usually having little intimacy in it.
On this, there is a booming interest in hormonal adjustment practices that remove the urge to breed.
There is no mass recognized currency on Encephalonus IV. Accommodations (such as travel, lab spaces, high functioning homes, etc) are earned through having the Cerebrocrustacean’s intelligence being recognized. If your work is considered impressive and worthwhile, you will have access to ever increasing resources.
Many Cerebrocrustaceans will agree to off planet work with no financial compensation, believing the work will bolster their reputation on their homeworld.
Meanwhile, so to say “low class” Cerebrocrustaceans are limited to a conservative amount of resources to use. Caused by their society’s fear of draining their planet like they had in the past. Cerebrocrustaceans at the bottom of the bucket are expected to work their way up to higher recognition through success. However, there is history of Cerebrocrustaceans whose failures are well known enough that they are “unofficially” given even smaller access to resources.
There are some Cerebrocrustacean whose measurement of intelligence are less material and more philosophical. They are not well respected.
Hope this is acceptable anon!

Cal Kestis Week 2024, Day One—Lightsaber
It's Cal Kestis Week and I'm here with fic!
I haven't written fic in ages, but I can't let Cal Week go by without contributing!
Prompt: Touch | “You’re doing great!” | But First They Have To Catch You | Lightsaber
[Gen, no archive warnings apply, read on AO3 or here on Tumblr]
Considering how many enemies Cal has to face on a regular basis, he shouldn't need to practice at all. Or even have the time, for that matter. Every planet he visits, every mission he joins or takes on alone, there's always someone out there who objects to him, really violently. There are some days when Cal feels like he keeps his lightsaber lit more often than not.
But the Mantis never feels more empty than in hyperspace.
At first he spent a decent amount of time just watching it pass, but Cal has never been very good at sitting around. After a while something always tugs him up out of the pilot's seat (Greez's seat) and into the main cabin (never filled with the scents of Greez's cooking or the quiet murmur of Cere and Merrin's conversations). Something has him dialing the power down to training mode (no one left he could spar with) and reaching back, back through his memory. He finds Master Tapal's resonant voice, deep and calm, distantly impatient and amused by turns.
"Master, when can I learn to fight with two blades like you do?"
"Jar'Kai is not to be undertaken lightly, Cal."
"I'm not undertaking it lightly. Shouldn't I be as prepared as I can be?"
"You will be, when you have completed your training in the Forms. Now, begin again."
Begin again. Eyes closed, seeing the training room in the Albedo Brave, Cal moves around the small space in the Mantis. The orange blade reflects off glass and metal, the flickering light of a campfire lit to hold back the darkness. It isn't about learning, not now, but about control. Even the greatest lightsaber masters in the Temple had moved through these exercises.
As he steps through his memories, other voices return to him. Long before the war, before he'd accepted Jaro Tapal's offer and become his Padawan, Master Kenobi and Master Skywalker had led a demonstration for the Initiates. Form III, Soresu, against Form V, Shien. Sitting in a group between his friends Caleb and Reva, Cal had followed the flashing blades with rapt attention. It had seemed impossible that he could ever move that fast, but the masters were still able to talk while they sparred. They had even joked back and forth, as blue clashed on blue, as Skywalker had driven Kenobi back step after step and yet never quite got past his guard.
"Rather flashy, Anakin."
"Maybe I'm trying to distract you."
"Distract me, or impress your audience?"
"Can't it be both?"
They had been impressed. Master Skywalker had been wizard, bright enough in the Force to blind them, but so focused and determined. Cal knows he hadn't been the only one who had resolved in that moment to train as hard as he could so he'd be able to fight like that.
(He'd only learned later how efficient Soresu can be for deflecting a lot of blaster bolts at once, how useful Shien is when facing an angry lightsaber-wielding Inquisitor. Back then, in Cal's eager eyes, it had just been about how cool it looked.)
Every step, every movement, listening to his memories, Cal slowly completes the single-bladed katas in order, ending where he had begun. Then, following the rumbling voice in his memory, he lights his second blade and begins stepping through the form he had only observed, the footwork of Jar'Kai, copying Master Tapal's training as he'd never done in life.
"In Jar'Kai, you are the center of your weapon. You must never forget your center, Cal."
"I won't, Master."
(He's trying, he's trying. What does it mean when his center keeps moving? When he keeps being pushed off-center by enemies and allies alike?)
As he approaches the completion of that remembered kata, Cal arrives at the form he had never been taught, never observed in the Temple. With no pause or break in flow, he separates his blades, whirling in slow motion as he blocks and counters invisible enemies the way he had learned to fight with them. Been forced to train himself to fight with them. There are no comforting memories of former sparring bouts now, only snarling faces and hurled threats to accompany the humming blades.
"Jedi!" "Traitor!" "Kill him!" "Take him out!" "He can't counter all of us, can he?" "What's he doing?" "He's so fast!" "Am I the only one left?" "I don't want to die like this!"
(The sounds of death don't change, he's learned, whether they arrive via burning blaster bolt or cauterizing lightsaber blade. He knows the flavor of fear in the air, in the Force, the spike of it just before death arrives. He knows it better than he wants to. He can't forget it.)
The long hilt in his hands bears almost no resemblance now to the broken thing he'd clutched to himself on that ride down to Bracca's surface. In his travels, in following Cordova's path, his second trip to Ilum and everything afterward, he had kept coming across new components, new wraps, new materials for plating, and he'd always been curious. Hardly a day passes that Cal isn't working to improve it, but there are still a few pieces of Master Tapal inside. All of his teachers are carried with him, inside and out.
"What is a Jedi's lightsaber to him, Padawan?"
"His life, Master."
"Correct. His life, a limb, an extension of himself. But it is also a weapon, the weapon only of a Jedi, kept as a reminder that peace is our goal, drawn only when all else fails. To draw a lightsaber upon an enemy is to take on a heavy responsibility. It must never become the easy solution."
(How often has he begun a conflict by pulling out his lightsaber first?)
Finally, reluctantly, he opens his eyes in the present and takes in the silent ship, with BD-1 perched safely out of the way on the kitchen table and recording. That prompts a smile as, with a snap, the lightsaber blade disappears. BD-1 chirps and straightens up, the recording ending.
"Thanks, buddy," Cal murmurs, holding out a hand for the little droid to hop up onto his shoulder. "Let's see what's next."
#my writing#cal kestis week 2024#ckw2024#cal kestis#lightsaber#i have a lot of emotions about jaro tapal#don't be surprised if he shows up again later this week

i. After passing the trials, Rüya’s ring was fitted with a stone emblazoned with the sigil of Ceres. She immediately took a small chisel and etched a single head of wheat onto the underside of the band—a secret tribute to Arasvale, the fields that shaped her, and the family she’ll never forget.
ii. Rüya’s unlikely bond with a cat sith began during her first year at the Tower of Olympia. She spent hours searching its depths for Proserpina’s secret alcove, and though she never uncovered it, Asrial followed her out. Cunning and enigmatic, he serves as her silent protector, often draped across her shoulder in the Queen’s Court. Away from Eterna, Asrial scouts hostile territories alongside the Warriors of Mars, claiming the souls she cannot save in time.
iii. In an effort to find peace, Rüya regularly tends to the vegetable gardens outside the Tower walls. It’s become a form of rehabilitation, not just for herself, but for those who work with her. It’s where she feels the most connected to others, swapping stories while her hands are deep in the earth—here she quietly observes the growth of plants and her patients.
iv. Rüya dabbles in Conjuration. More than mere convenience, this precision-based art has proven invaluable to her work as a Healer. She inscribes intricate sigils on medical kits and herbs, ensuring she can call them to her side no matter the situation.
v. Rüya dreams of experiencing a love like her parents shared, but terror engulfs her whenever someone comes too close. Independence is her shield, but it’s also her prison, keeping her isolated from the very connection she craves.

Some Notes on Jax and Atlas - Their relationship, how they feel about each other, and how their connection works (plus any other noise that jumped into my head as I was working on this)
- After footage of Jax using his new abilities leaked into the news and he became public knowledge, Jax adopted the title ‘Atlas Soldier’ that was used in the news as a sort of alter-ego he could slip into to protect himself.
- Unknown to him, the alterations made to his brain by the Midra Machine made it so this choice of slipping into the ‘Atlas’ alter-ego, caused new neural pathways to form, allowing this splinter personality to start manifesting.
- As it becomes easier and easier for Jax to slip into this fabricated persona, he begins to experience bouts of dissociation, where he’s aware he’s doing things, but the memory of those things is thick and fuzzy.
- These episodes later turn into full blown blackouts where he has no memory at all of events, and is pretty freaked out by this.
- Atlas himself begins as a sort of slightly self aware fight or flight response (normally set to fight). Because he’s a splinter formed around Jax’s attempts to protect himself, that becomes the core of what Atlas is. He is protective. He protects Jax.
- Atlas is not evil. He is flawed. He is made of many of Jax’s repressed emotions, has that same short temper and all he really knows at this point is violence because 90% of his manifestations happen when Jax is getting overwhelmed mid-fight.
- As Atlas becomes more self aware, he begins to realise that if people knew he existed, then Jax would be in danger. This adds more tension to Atlas’ desperate need to be seen and understood. While he harbours some resentment towards Jax for being able to exist as himself, he is still loyal and protective of him.
- Atlas is at first only able to take over when Jax is at his breaking point. Stepping in to take action that Jax doesn’t think himself capable of.
- Later he can do it almost at will, finding a gap he can slip into (often when Jax is tired/distracted).
- In Act III, Jax and Atlas have suffered from the machine’s effects for too long and it’s made them both aggressive and unstable. The two of them blur and flip between each other on a dime, wired into permanent fight or flight.
- It’s at this point in Act III that they lash out and end up hurting Monroe. When they realise what they’ve done, a split second later, they flee the base in a blind panic and go into hiding before being located and taken into custody by Loomis. (Act III is a really rough time)
- Since the very first splinter started to develop, Atlas has manifested in Jax’s dreams and nightmares. Often appearing as either some untouchable distant hero Jax could never live up to, or some sort of unstoppable monster.
- They have confrontations and conversations within the dreams, and as they start to understand each other more and even out the playing field, their dream encounters become more of a way for Atlas to keep Jax updated, Jax to keep Atlas company, and the two of them to grow together and accept each other.
- Their relationship has been rough for a long time. Between Jax’s fear and Atlas’ resentment, they strain against each other constantly. But by the end of things they’re honestly glad the other is there. It makes dealing with everything they’re going through a bit easier as they understand it in a way no one else ever could.
- They are two sides of the same coin.
- Ceres is the first person to knowingly have a conversation with Atlas. He’s shocked to be treated like he’s his own person, and her acceptance of him and what he is does a lot to chill him out and settle his relationship with Jax. (She doesn't love Atlas the way she loves Jax, and he knows this. It hurts him, but her acceptance of him means everything to him)
- In other settings, Jax and Atlas are often depicted as twin brothers. At each other’s throats, but protective, loving and loyal.
Overall they're a mess, but between the ups and downs, things are getting better.
—-
From a design standpoint:
Jax and Atlas are nearly impossible to distinguish from each other usually in the book. Atlas stands a little straighter, and doesn't bother doing his hair, but that's it.
In art though, I like to be able to show which is which by fiddling with the eye colour and how the hair is
They’ve come a long way and changed a bit since their first iterations for sure, but this is the most accurate info I can give at the moment. Hope it makes sense.

The Progress of Poesy: A Pindaric Ode by Thomas Gray
I.1.
Awake, Æolian lyre, awake, And give to rapture all thy trembling strings. From Helicon's harmonious springs A thousand rills their mazy progress take: The laughing flowers, that round them blow, Drink life and fragrance as they flow. Now the rich stream of music winds along Deep, majestic, smooth, and strong, Thro' verdant vales, and Ceres' golden reign: Now rolling down the steep amain, Headlong, impetuous, see it pour: The rocks and nodding groves rebellow to the roar.
I.2.
Oh! Sovereign of the willing soul, Parent of sweet and solemn-breathing airs, Enchanting shell! the sullen Cares And frantic Passions hear thy soft control. On Thracia's hills the Lord of War, Has curb'd the fury of his car, And dropp'd his thirsty lance at thy command. Perching on the sceptred hand Of Jove, thy magic lulls the feather'd king With ruffled plumes and flagging wing: Quench'd in dark clouds of slumber lie The terror of his beak, and light'nings of his eye.
I.3.
Thee the voice, the dance, obey, Temper'd to thy warbled lay. O'er Idalia's velvet-green The rosy-crowned Loves are seen On Cytherea's day With antic Sports and blue-ey'd Pleasures, Frisking light in frolic measures; Now pursuing, now retreating, Now in circling troops they meet: To brisk notes in cadence beating Glance their many-twinkling feet. Slow melting strains their Queen's approach declare: Where'er she turns the Graces homage pay. With arms sublime, that float upon the air, In gliding state she wins her easy way: O'er her warm cheek and rising bosom move The bloom of young Desire and purple light of Love.
II.1.
Man's feeble race what ills await, Labour, and Penury, the racks of Pain, Disease, and Sorrow's weeping train, And Death, sad refuge from the storms of Fate! The fond complaint, my song, disprove, And justify the laws of Jove. Say, has he giv'n in vain the heav'nly Muse? Night, and all her sickly dews, Her spectres wan, and birds of boding cry, He gives to range the dreary sky: Till down the eastern cliffs afar Hyperion's march they spy, and glitt'ring shafts of war.
II.2.
In climes beyond the solar road, Where shaggy forms o'er ice-built mountains roam, The Muse has broke the twilight-gloom To cheer the shiv'ring native's dull abode. And oft, beneath the od'rous shade Of Chili's boundless forests laid, She deigns to hear the savage youth repeat In loose numbers wildly sweet Their feather-cinctur'd chiefs, and dusky loves. Her track, where'er the goddess roves, Glory pursue, and generous Shame, Th' unconquerable Mind, and Freedom's holy flame.
II.3.
Woods, that wave o'er Delphi's steep, Isles, that crown th' Ægean deep, Fields, that cool Ilissus laves, Or where Mæander's amber waves In ling'ring Lab'rinths creep, How do your tuneful echoes languish, Mute, but to the voice of Anguish? Where each old poetic mountain Inspiration breath'd around: Ev'ry shade and hallow'd Fountain Murmur'd deep a solemn sound: Till the sad Nine in Greece's evil hour Left their Parnassus for the Latian plains. Alike they scorn the pomp of tyrant Power, And coward Vice, that revels in her chains. When Latium had her lofty spirit lost, They sought, O Albion! next thy sea-encircled coast.
III.1.
Far from the sun and summer-gale, In thy green lap was Nature's darling laid, What time, where lucid Avon stray'd, To him the mighty Mother did unveil Her awful face: the dauntless child Stretch'd forth his little arms, and smiled. This pencil take (she said) whose colours clear Richly paint the vernal year: Thine too these golden keys, immortal boy! This can unlock the gates of Joy; Of Horror that, and thrilling Fears, Or ope the sacred source of sympathetic tears.
III.2.
Nor second he, that rode sublime Upon the seraph-wings of Ecstasy, The secrets of th' Abyss to spy. He pass'd the flaming bounds of Place and Time: The living throne, the sapphire-blaze, Where angels tremble, while they gaze, He saw; but blasted with excess of light, Clos'd his eyes in endless night. Behold, where Dryden's less presumptuous car, Wide o'er the fields of Glory bear Two coursers of ethereal race, With necks in thunder cloth'd, and long-resounding pace.
III.3.
Hark, his hands thy lyre explore! Bright-eyed Fancy hovering o'er Scatters from her pictur'd urn Thoughts that breathe, and words that burn. But ah! 'tis heard no more— O lyre divine, what daring spirit Wakes thee now? tho' he inherit Nor the pride, nor ample pinion, That the Theban Eagle bear, Sailing with supreme dominion Thro' the azure deep of air: Yet oft before his infant eyes would run Such forms, as glitter in the Muse's ray With orient hues, unborrow'd of the Sun: Yet shall he mount, and keep his distant way Beyond the limits of a vulgar fate, Beneath the good how far—but far above the great.

Jolly-O Wipplesnit
This is the first digital rendition of my WIR: Modified (Next Gen AU) child, Jolly-O.
Jolly-O Wipplesnit is the only child of Swizzle Malarkey and Sticky Wipplesnit. Jolly-O's theme is based on hard candies like Jolly Ranchers, and he likes the cosplay aesthetic.
Additional details on Jolly-O:
He is the 3rd youngest of the Sugar Rush Next Gen children.
He is best friends with Cadbury Treat, and he gets along with Felix the III.
He is enemies with Sourpat and Cerecita Chamoy-Bing-Bing. Between the two though, Sourpat hates him much more; Cere just sees him as a nuisance, but she sees just about everyone this way.
He is a massive weeabo! [He likes to make believe that he has a stand called "Shut Up and Drive"] He also thinks he's the main character.
Besides watching anime, he also enjoys dance choreography.
