this is something i have seen surprisingly little about, but sea-longing is a fascinating concept to me and frodo is my favorite character so i want to examine it.

sea-longing aka the unquiet of ulmo is of course what is experienced by elves when they are being called back over the sea to valinor. legolas experiences this in lotr. and sea-longing is not so much about the sea itself than it is about what awaits across it: valinor.

this obviously affects elves because they're the only ones permitted in valinor. however as we know, frodo sails there at the end of lotr, though he's not an elf, but a mortal. however i think it's very clear that frodo experiences sea-longing despite this.

in valaquenta, it's stated that ulmo loves both elves and men (of which hobbits are a branch of) and that from his horns music plays and "those to whom that music comes hear it ever after in their hearts, and longing for the sea never leaves them again." additionally, these horns are "wrought of white shell," and in "the sea-bell/frodos dreme," it states: "i walked by the sea, and there came to me, / as a star-beam on the wet sand, / a white shell like a sea-bell; / trembling it lay in my wet hand". the connection between the white shells stands out to me, as these white shells are from where ulmo's music and source of sea-longing come from. (and whether or not frodo is the author of the poem, it's undeniably about him)

now here we come to the text in lotr. in book i, chapter v, frodo's journey has barely begun, but he has a dream about the sea, and a "great desire" to see it. it's also mentioned that the sound of the sea "often" troubles his dreams, so this likely started even before this.

the second time frodo dreams is when he is in the house of tom bombadil, in book i, chapter viii (first pic). while it doesn't directly mention the sea, we know the sea and valinor are connected. this is especially notable because the dream frodo has here is shown to have come true, almost word for word, at the very end of rotk when he sails to valinor (second pic, from book vi, chapter xi).

i don't have much to say about this one, but in book ii, chapter vii, frodo actually sees the sea, rather than hearing it, for the first time in galadriel's mirror:

much later, when frodo believes the ring is lost and the quest has failed, he says this (book vi, chapter i):

"only elves can escape. away, away out of middle-earth, far away over the sea"-- i love this line especially with the knowledge that frodo does get to "escape" over the sea, like the elves. and like the elves, he is experiencing this sea-longing, this call to the undying lands already.

i think this is all very, very interesting, because it seems that frodo's fate is sealed as someone who can't exist in middle-earth anymore rather early on in his journey. the idea that elves are the only ones permitted in valinor is also interesting because, while frodo is a mortal, he is described as having an "elvish beauty" and "elvish air," he is named an elf-friend, and he has a lifelong interest and love for elves, and knows a bit of elvish. also, arwen gives frodo the evenstar as this symbol of him being able to take her place on the ship to valinor that she forfeits. his connection to the elves, and therefore to valinor, is there from the beginning.

Lord of the Rings

Aragorn is a fiction character in The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien. Aragorn is the heir of Isildur, an ancient King of Arnor and Gondor. He is the son of Arathorn II and Gilraen. Aragorn, 49, falls in love with immortal elf Arwen, Arwen’s father, Elrond Half-elven forbids them to marry unless Aragorn becomes King of Arnor and Gondor.

Sauron the Dark Lord made the One Ring, to give him power to control Middle-Earth. Sauron is defeated in battle. During the battle Isildur didn’t destroy the Ring and kept it for himself. Isildur is killed by the Orcs, the Ring is allegedly lost. Aragorn knows the wizard Gandalf, Gandalf is suspicious of Bilbo Baggin’s ring, which turns out to be Sauron’s one Ring.

Aragorn, 87, leads the hobbits and others including Legolas the elf and the dwarf Gimli. He helps them on their journey to destroy the One Ring. The Ring is then destroyed.

Aragorn becomes King of Gondor and Andor and marries Arwen and rules for the next 122 years. He dies aged 210 and is succeeded by his son Eldarion. Arwen, in sorrow of her husband’s death, dies not long afterwards.

Honestly I really found this one to be good after BOTW, but it's good in a lot of the others as well. (Yes this isn't a great picture but it's fine)

9. Frieren

Funny Elf learning to truly live and care about those who she will outlive, rather than letting them pass her by like she used to.

8. Prince Vegeta

Guy went from being a full on villain to becoming a loving father and one of Earth's greatest defenders, honestly I love seeing him continue on that path.

7. Obi Wan Kenobi

Best Jedi in my opinion and also awesome to watch on screen. Personally I like his somewhat armored design from The Clone Wars the best, add the cloak to that and it's perfect. The rest of his designs are great too, but that one is my favorite.

6. Spider-Man

Good old Spider-Man, where to begin? There's so many versions of him and pretty much all of them have something fun to bring to the table.

5. Gandalf

Everyone's favorite Meddling Wizard who also knows how to bring light to those in need even when things are at their darkest, great characterization.

4. Superman

Just a guy who wants to do the right thing and help people out along the way. Top tier Superhero.

3. The Doctor

Long and goofy history this character may have, but he's got a lot of cool stuff that he's done and it's fun to watch him keep going along, trying to do the right thing.

2. Michael Carpenter

Knight of the Cross. Warrior against the Unholy. Kind Father to his children. A Good Man.

1. Optimus Prime

The Leader of the Autobots and the last of the Primes. He is my favorite for many reasons. All of the versions of him (Minus Shattered Glass and later Bayverse, but that's the point of Shattered Glass) are created to be a Hero. And not one of those Hollywood Heroes, all yelling and BSing. He is meant to be Strong enough to be Gentle. He is a reluctant warrior who is wishes there was any other way for things to go forward, but there is not any other way, and so he continues to fight for what is right, no matter what.

Part Five: Our Year

“You need to tell him,” Robin said as she closed the door.

“Tell him what?” I asked quietly.

“That you love him. He deserves to know and both of you deserve to be happy.”

“How does that relate to his happiness?”

“Because he feels the same way!”

“No, he doesn’t.”

“He obviously does. You’re both hiding your feelings, but you could tell each other and have an even better relationship than you have now!”

 Robin stopped talking, opened the door, and answered the phone.

“It’s for you,” she said, handing me the phone.

“Hello?” I asked.

“I can’t figure it out; you and the Hellfire freaks. What are they? Your protection squad? The entire population of people you aren’t scared to talk to? You talk a big game at school, defending the little freaks who can’t defend themselves. But what happens when you’re alone? When you get so scared you can’t talk, or tell me your real name? Because it will happen again. And when it does, I won’t run this time. So, show me how mean you can be. But watch your back, Arwen.”

I listened to the static after the call dropped, fighting tears. As I hung up the phone, I took a shaky breath and met Eddie’s eyes.

“That was Jason Carver.”

“What did he want?” Eddie and Steve asked together, moving toward me and Robin.

I shook my head, once again failing to speak. Robin rubbed my back lightly as Eddie silently begged me to tell him what happened.

“He just said to watch my back,” I explained quietly, looking down at my feet. “That I wouldn’t be so brave when I’m alone.”

Steve’s jaw tightened, and he opened his mouth to speak but stopped when Eddie backhanded his arm.

“I’m not scared of him, but I know he means it.”

“We’re not going to let anything happen to you,” Steve said sternly.

“You’re not alone, princess. Ever,” Eddie added.

“Besides, from what I hear, you could take him. Again.” Robin smiled as she nudged my shoulder with hers.

I felt a smile growing, grateful for the friends surrounding me. Robin hugged me, then I felt Steve and Eddie’s arms around me.

“You wanna go home, princess?” Eddie asked, pulling back slightly to look at me. 

I nodded, taking his hand and walking out after thanking Steve and Robin. As I walked through the door, Robin gave me a look, reminding me of our conversation.

In the van, I relapsed into silence for the entire ride. Even when I invited Eddie in, I did it with a hand gesture and a tip of my head. We sat on the couch, Eddie gently resting a hand on my knee and waiting for me to look at him.

“Do you want to stay in Hawkins?” I asked suddenly, not thinking before it came out.

“I want to be wherever you are,” Eddie answered, his thumb sweeping across my leg.

“I want to be with you, but I don’t think I want to leave Hawkins. At least not yet.”

“You don’t have to. You have people here that love you. Besides, we still have two weeks of high school left. And this is my year.”

He nudged me at the end of his sentence, smiling at me. We decided to watch a movie and leave the life-altering decisions for another day. Eddie stayed at my house all weekend, and we studied for exams, ensuring we would walk the stage and graduate together.

The second to last week of school was repetitive: wake up, get ready, ride to school with Eddie, go to class, eat lunch with the Hellfire Club (and give them the stress-baked treats from the night before), go home with Eddie, study, bake, and sleep. Our last weekend of high school, however, was movies and ice cream, a delicious attempt to avoid over-studying and burning out. Wednesday was the last day of exams, but because Eddie finished before me, so I told him I would meet him at Family Video when I finished. As I finally exited the school, Jason Carver was leaned against the only car in the parking lot. 

“Arwen,” he greeted sarcastically as he stood up. “Long time, no see.”

I took a deep breath and curled my hands into fists at my sides.

“What, you want to fight? Without the freak here to help? That seems stupid. Considering I didn’t come alone.”

He looked over my shoulder, and I turned to see one of his basketball teammates standing behind me.

“There are two options here. You take a beating or-“

“Good to see you’re still an idiot, Carver,” someone yelled as a car door slammed to my left.

“Harrington? What are you doing here?” Jason responded.

I looked to my left and saw Steve and Eddie walking toward me.

“What I should have done a long time ago,” Eddie interjected.

“It doesn’t have to be like this, Harrington. This is between me and the quiet one here.”

“Not anymore. Two of you, two of us,” Eddie pointed out.

Jason laughed as he looked between Steve and Eddie.

“You want to fight us, and what? Defend her honor?”

“No. She can do that alone. What we are going to do is put you in your place,” Steve countered.

Jason looked at his friend, who nodded. 

“Fine. Let’s get started,” Jason cracked his knuckles as he stepped toward Steve.

Steve took the first swing, knocking Jason back a few steps as his nose began bleeding. Eddie joined immediately after, dodging a punch and using the momentum to kick Jason’s teammate to the ground.

Jason landed a solid hit to Steve’s solar plexus, knocking the breath out of him as he stumbled backward, scraping his hands across the asphalt as he caught himself. Eddie attempted to keep the other guy down; after a few kicks to the kidneys, he panted for Eddie to stop and stumbled away. While Eddie was ensuring he stayed back, Jason moved toward Steve, who was still on the ground. I rushed over and stood in front of Steve.

“This is between you and me, Jason. Unless beating up your idol is just a weird fantasy for you or something,” I said, checking on Steve over my shoulder.

“You’re right. This is between us. Let’s see; the last time we saw each other, you held your arm to my throat. Maybe I should return the favor,” Jason threatened.

“Try.”

He smirked before pulling his shoulder back. Before he could shoot his arm out, I twisted quickly to my left and watched my fist connect to Jason’s jaw. He fell backward as his hand raised to hold his jaw. Eddie appeared beside him and hit him in the same spot, knocking him to the ground. Steve stood on shaky legs and walked past me to land one final hit.

“Stay away from her. And get out of Hawkins as soon as you graduate,” Steve said lowly before gesturing for us to return to his car.

Eddie stopped me as I turned toward the car. He pulled a bandana from his back pocket and wrapped it around my knuckles.

“That was quite the left hook,” he hummed as he tied it off and opened the car door for me.

“Thank you,” I said as Steve started the car.

“Not a problem.” Steve smiled at me in the rear view mirror as he wiped his bloody knuckles on his jeans.

“Seriously. You didn’t have to do that. I appreciate you – both of you – more than you know.”

Eddie and Steve shared a look I didn’t understand before reminding me that they would always be there for me. I wondered what Robin would say when she found out Eddie got into a fight for me.

When we finally walked into Family Video, Robin pulled me aside and asked, “Did you tell him yet?”

“No. There’s been a lot going on.”

“I know, Steve told me. But you have to tell him before Sunday.”

“Why?”

“Because then you’re officially out of high school and things start changing.”

“Fine.”

The following morning, Eddie came to my house and begged me to call the headmaster for his grades, claiming he couldn’t do it himself.

“Hello, I am calling on behalf of Eddie Munson,” I explained when the call was answered.

“Oh, yes. He passed all of his exams, all Bs in fact, so he will be graduating on Saturday!”

 “Thank you,” I said quietly, then hung up.

I turned to him, frowning.

“What?” he asked, brows furrowed.

“The Hellfire Club has to get a new DM, theirs is graduating.”

Eddie jumped off the couch, wrapping his arms around my waist and spinning me around. He kissed my cheek, then began talking a mile a minute about how he couldn’t have done it without me. After, I called Robin and asked if she wanted to go shopping with me for a graduation outfit, to which she immediately agreed, volunteering Steve to go with Eddie to make sure he looked decent.

“That is the one,” Robin exclaimed as I walked out of the dressing room for the fifth time.

“Really?” I asked, turning in the mirror.

“Absolutely. It might kill Eddie, but worth it.”

I laughed before changing out of it and buying it.

The morning of graduation, we met Steve and Eddie in the parking lot, saying bye and agreeing on where to meet after the ceremony. 

Eddie and I sat together through the ceremony, walking the stage and hearing Steve, Robin, Dustin, and Lucas screaming so loud we couldn’t even hear our names. We got back to our seats and sat down, holding hands. When we were released to find our friends and family, I tugged Eddie toward the woods behind the bleachers, sitting on a picnic table and holding Eddie’s hands.

“There’s something I need to tell you,” I said quietly.

“Ok,” Eddie said slowly, “everything alright, princess?”

“I think so.” I sat there, looking at his rings.

“You gonna tell me or I need to guess again?” he smiled.

“I don’t know how.”

“Can you show me?” He asked, tilting my head up to meet my eyes. 

I nodded, standing up and moving my hands to his chest, sliding them up and cupping his face. I moved to my tiptoes, pressing my lips to his and closing my eyes. He kissed me back immediately, with no hesitation in his movements. He wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me closer. 

I pulled back first, smiling as I whispered, “I love you, Eds.”

He beamed at me, leaning his forehead against mine and whispering, “I love you too, princess.”

We walked hand in hand to our meeting spot, separating to hug our friends.

“I can’t believe you finally did it, Eddie! You graduated!” Dustin exclaimed.

“Couldn’t have done it without my princess,” Eddie said, a hand on my hip as he pulled me into his side and kissed my temple.

“When did it happen?!” Steve and Robin demanded loudly.

“What is this?” Lucas asked as Dustin shrugged.

“About five minutes ago,” Eddie shrugged.

“Took long enough,” Steve said, smiling as he slapped Eddie’s back.

“Who started it?” Robin asked.

“Take a guess,” I said.

“Eddie?” everyone asked.

“Nope.” He smiled. “She pulled me into the woods and kissed me.”

I hid my face in his gown, just below his shoulder. His arm wrapped around me, chuckling before answering Dustin’s questions about the graduation ceremony.

“So, party at my place. Just us, celebrating you two. Deal?” Steve asked me when I pulled away from Eddie. I nodded, and Steve smiled, pulling me into a hug and whispering, “I’m so happy for you.”

Eddie drove me to Steve’s house, his hand holding mine the whole time. We were alone by the pool while everyone else argued about what kind of pizza to order.

“So, are you staying in Hawkins?” Eddie asked.

“Only if you’ll stay with me,” I answered.

“I’ll go anywhere with you.”

“Even without knowing my name?”

“All I need to know is that you are my princess, and I will love you forever.”

“I love you, Prince Eddie. Thank you for everything. Thank you for listening.”

Eddie smiled as he pulled me close. “Thanks for talking. I’ll listen until I die.”

“Gross. I’m regretting our decision to intervene,” Steve said to Robin as they walked out the back door.

“I don’t know, they’re kinda cute,” Robin pointed out with a playful shrug.

“Wow. Inspirational. You should talk at our wedding,” Eddie called sarcastically.

“Wedding?” I asked, smiling.

“Oh, yeah. I’m actually becoming a prince someday, princess,” Eddie promised with a kiss.

...I pity Arwen for the pressure put on her to be Luthien II, to love Aragorn. It sounds so forced.

I wonder why they would do that, is Galadriel trying to be Finrod II? Is to legimate his Gondorian ass?

Well, the answer to this is that canonically speaking every elf/human relationship is 'forced' in that (somehow more than all other actions in the world) they are 'gods will'. Eru quite literally is said to 'will' the elven/human couples fall in love with each other, to bless the Kings of Men. Elrond understands and expresses this pretty literally; Maybe, it has been appointed so, that by my loss the kingship of Men may be restored. The concept being that elven blood will convey a closeness to divinity upon Aragorn's line that has grown 'stale' over it's many previous generations. (yuck)

So like yes Arwen is I suppose pitiable in that she, like many of her kin in the First Age, is unfortunately important enough for god to take an interest in her. However, given that all love is supposedly something conveyed to couples from god to some degree? (unless it is a corruption, also possible) I would not call Arwen any more forced than anyone else, even if she clearly laments the loss of Valinor. The love did not mean she had to remain, and she makes the choice to marry Aragorn with as full an understanding of the consequences as she could have had without somehow experiencing them beforehand.

So I still find it difficult to muster any enduring pity for her, when she's been living fairly happily for 3000 years up till this point, with a father who appears to love her very much and honour her choices even if they hurt him deeply. In comparison to the vast majority of characters in lotr, especially the divinely important ones, Arwen lot is not lamentable. Although I suppose that is not really fair, pain is pain and one's psyche does not adjust itself according to some fair and balanced suffering measurer in the sky. Clearly Arwen was deeply distraught at the end and did die with some measure of regret. And despite her free choices, God did badger her into it... I'll try to be more sympathetic to elves... .. . No I can't I'm sorry. Good for you tho Anon.

Protagonist, Heroes and Superheroes: Who are my Favourites?

Hello wandering traveller! I'm back again to yap; this time about SOME of my favourite protagonists. This feels strange to me as I gravitate towards liking villains and anti-heroes more that the good guys haha.

The Hobbit:

I don't need to say anything for this one.

He's my adopted grandpa in my delulu mind. I honestly think I have a soft spot (NOT IN A ROMNTIC WAY) for him.

Honestly, for a good two years I was a Fili over Kili typa gal, but lately my brain chemistry altered and now I have a growing love for Kili. I do think he is still a bit cocky for my liking - but love is blind so I will ignore it haha.

Lord of the Rings:

This is also part of the Hobbit section as well, but Gandalf the Grey is a wee tinker isn't he? Also, Gandalf the Grey over Gandalf the White any day of the week - I think he got too serious (even though he got upgraded to the highest wizard which does make sense but still).

I don't need to say anything for this part 2.

I tried to find a memeable/funny image for Arwen, but she's just inhumanly beautiful in every picture haha. Hot take, I definitely prefer Peter Jackson's adaptation of Arwen than the original as she has more of a story rather than be mentioned a couple of times throughout the trilogy.

The Witcher:

It's Henry Cavill. What more? I think even though he is more (or tries to be) neutral as a Witcher is conditioned to be, I'm adding him on the good side. He also does a lot of heroic acts which would deem him being a sort of hero.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, he is my favourite character in the Witcher series by a long shot! If there is anything I remember from the books, it would be him talking about his drinking (blood as he is a higher vampire) problem which caused his misses to leave him and ruin his life. It is more funny when you read it for the first time as you never expected that from a vampire.

Marvel:

This one is really hard cause I like quite a lot of the characters so I might have to do a part 2 for this one.

It would be a sin if I didn't put this image in. So, Blade has been my favourite marvel character, and my favourite character in general since I was a wee one. I remember watching Blade II when I was 6 (at an age where I really shouldn't have been watching it), and it was the only thing that calmed me down after I almost chopped my thumb off. That is another story to tell - one of my lore drops.

Another character who I've loved since I was still in nappies. I thought, and still think that he is one of the coolest characters in any comic book and film adaptations.

"He's the best guy arouuuuund" "What about the people he murdered?" "What muuurrrdddeerrrr?" I'm putting him here cause I want to; Bucky started out good and ended up good in the end. I will defend this guy at all costs!

Star Wars:

TBH despite liking all of the characters in Star Wars, Princess Leia is one of the few protagonists that I really like. I do remember when I was a kid trying to copy her hair styles and outfit haha. She's an icon, she's a legend and she is the moment.

Another fashion icon (haha jks). C-3PO is my spirit animal.

Foundation:

I honestly am inspired by her to get better at math (even though I left school 5 years ago) as she is insanely skilled at mathematics. She seems like one of a few in the series that is not insane in some shape or form.

Harry Potter:

Give him to me now please. Also another character I don't need to explain why he's one of my favourites.

He's just a walking teddy bear with a heart of gold. Also, get this man a baby dragon.

If you recall, a little while ago I manually scraped data regarding popular LotR ships from Ao3 using an extremely rough methodology. I had a request for the data, so what the heck, here you go.

Now, these numbers are ridiculously rough. In fact, you might even say they're bad. The first 10 are approximately correct. But, as explained in that link, every group of 10 after that is undercounted by more and more because I excluded fics from my search that contained the ships already on the list. Also, anything tagged in the Hobbit movies/book but not LotR was really, really undercounted.

Let this be a lesson in data sources! In fact, the best use of this data is to use it as a starting point for getting good data. Instead of checking every permutation of ships (like idk, Merry/Elrond) for proper numbers, you would start by checking the top 50 on this list. This is of course assuming you didn't have a better method of getting data out of Ao3 than using the work and tag searches like I've done here.

(The second-best use of this data is to go "lol, really?" which is what I assume/hope you're here for, because otherwise you're probably gonna be disappointed.)

(The third-best use of this data is to note that because the Hobbit movies came out 2012-14, right when Ao3 had achieved critical mass, it is much, much easier to find Hobbit-related fic on Ao3 than LotR, the films of which came out in 2001-03.)

For ships that intrigued me I've included the "actual" results in purple. But even those numbers are probably undercounting because some people don't use tags that map to the canonical tags.

Folks… I have finished Fellowship of the Ring.

Spoilers below.

Oh boy. If you saw an earlier post of mine, you’d know that I knew of Boromir’s death (unfortunately) going into reading the whole thing, but what I did NOT know was that it was in Fellowship??

My poor bean (that’s another bad pun).

Also just like… the way the fall of Lothlorien ties into how so much land was forever destroyed by the wars of Tolkien’s time (WWI/II). There’s just no way to return to what was Before. I don’t know if the connection is deliberate but it feels like it is. And ugh, Galadriel back with the awesome one liners. I’ll miss her.

Points for Sam for actually hiking it over to Frodo on the boat.

I hate to see the Fellowship break up but I get why it happened and why it even needed to happen. I just hope that we see Arwen and Eowyn soon because of it. Frothing at the mouth over those two I swear. (Where is the shieldmaiden??? Women!!!)

Onto the Two Towers for even more pain and despair‼️

Last thing: It’s been so nice to be back in a book fandom. I think I mentioned it in a tag, but especially one that’s so fleshed out with worldbuilding is just such a nice change after streamline (my followers know this) nothing but danmei and thai BLs for like, a few years now. I feel like I’m getting some analytical braincells back while simultaneously losing them all over again due to screaming over these characters internally. Just… ✨LITERATURE✨.
