Resharing for #IguanaAwarenessDay

Lidded Bowl with Iguana

The Cleveland Museum of Art
“It is believed the iguana's regional symbolism was linked to both rulership and the solar realm, and here we see the iguana is portrayed as if basking in the sun, but also with an aggressive stance of bared teeth and fully fanned dewlap.
Even though it is a stylized rendering, the maker still included enough real-life details to allow us to identify it as a male Green Iguana (Iguana iguana). The single large round scale, called a subtympanic plate/shield, is a feature unique to this species, and the enlarged dewlap and jowl is typical of the male.”

Male Green Iguana (Iguana iguana). As seen here, the common name is a bit of a misnomer, as they come in a variety of colors!

It's September 8th, 🦎 Iguana Awareness Day. The Iguana is a fascinating creature – a cold-blooded reptile with an amazingly active tail. The Iguana pre-dates the dinosaurs. One of the remnants of its early evolutionary appearance is its third eye – a retina-like structure on the top of its head. Due to the hardness of its skull, an Iguana can survive a fall of 40 feet or more. If you've ever watched a Galapagos documentary, you've probably noticed that Iguanas are great swimmers, are very social, and like to live and eat together.
Iguanas are native to South and Central America. They somehow invaded Florida in the early 1960s and are now as common in some areas as squirrels are in the US Midwest. For those who can afford to feed them, Iguanas make great pets. They can be affectionate if given enough care and attention and live for more than 20 years. They can even be house-trained. Iguanas are vegetarians who eat all sorts of shoots, leaves, blossoms, fruits, and vegetables. Many Florida residents adopt juvenile Iguanas as pets without realizing that adults can grow to be six feet long. They end up releasing them back into the wild well before they reach that length. One of the goals of Iguana Awareness Day is to make all prospective pet Iguana owners aware of this fact. ☮️ Peace… Jamiese of Pixoplanet

Iguana Awareness Day
What’s not to love about an aggressive, cold-blooded, reptile with nasty bite and a powerfully strong tail? Learn all about these cute critters and how to care for them on Iguana Awareness Day.
As with so many pets, not all new owners realise what they are committing to when they first take home their baby iguana. That little bundle of scales could one day grow to six feet in length. With very specific dietary needs and a rather reptilian personality, iguanas are said to be easy to love, but hard to care for.
Iguana Awareness Day is the ideal opportunity to learn about keeping your iguana tame and friendly, how to care for its health and personal grooming, and how to house it comfortably. With the proper care and attention, an iguana can be a wonderful and rewarding pet for many years.

Today is Iguana Awareness Day!🦎 Here’s a throwback to one of my Caribbean cruise contracts, where I got to enjoy a port day on Grand Cayman Island! While my coworkers were all planning their beach days, I was plotting how to get to the Blue Iguana Nature Reserve to learn about their Recovery Program (Hashtag Not Your Typical Girl 🤣). • • The Grand Cayman Blue Iguana was driven to the brink of extinction, with only about 12 left surviving in 2002! It’s currently the most endangered Iguana on Earth 🌏, but this reserve is making incredible strides in their population. Because of the recovery program, these Blue beauties have hope for their future. On-site (and around the island), staff and volunteers focus on field research, habitat protection, captive breeding, population restoration, and education. • • If a visit to Grand Cayman 🏝 is on your bucket list, I encourage you to get off the beaten tourist path by visiting the Reserve. Take a tour, donate if you can, and spread the Iguana love on social media! 💙 • • • • • @visitcaymanislands #visitcaymanislands #grandcayman #grandcaymanislands #blueiguana #iguana #iguanaawarenessday #blueiguanarecoveryprogramme #wildlifebiologist #cruiselife #lifeatsea #caribbeancruise #caribbean #reptilelover #conservation #herpetology #natgeowild #outdoorbloggers #wildwoman #naturereserve #wildlifetravel (at Grand Cayman) https://www.instagram.com/p/BnfDvUvH1oV/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=vew02wasinxs

It’s Iguana Awareness Day! One thing you may not be aware of: iguanas have a so-called “third eye” on the top of their heads. Known as the parietal eye, it looks like a pale scale and can’t discern shapes or color--but does sense light and movement, helping iguanas anticipate threats from above. Thanks to their regular eyes, iguanas also have outstanding vision and can see color and movement at large distances.

National Iguana Awareness Day
National Iguana Awareness Day is celebrated on 8th September. National Iguana Awareness Day is the perfect chance to learn about keeping your lovely iguana domestic and friendly and also on this day learn how to take care of its grooming and health and how to keep it comfortable at a house. These cold-blooded iguanas can be an amazing and fulfilling pet for many decades with the proper care and attention.
History of National Iguana Awareness Day
The origin and history of National Iguana Awareness Day are not known, Iguanas are fascinating creatures, they are cold-blooded reptiles with awful bite and an amazing active tail native to South and Central America. These reptiles are believed to have come to the United States on cargo boats; they are now commonly seen in the Florida Keys as squirrels in the Midwestern U.S. Because these cold-blooded colorful reptiles are not native to the United States, they are not safeguarded from hunting or pet collection. Many Florida residents have taken these Iguanas to their house and turned them into pets instead of the garden annoyance. Not all new owners of these baby iguanas realize that this little bundle of scales can grow one day to six feet long. With very a restricted dietic needs and with a different reptilian personality these colorful creatures are said to be easy to love, but hard to care for.
How to Celebrate National Iguana Awareness Day
Celebrate National Iguana Awareness Day by learning all about these cute reptiles and how to protect and take care of them.
