ALRIGHT THE 3 MAKOTO AU'S I HAVE RIGHT NOW THAT IM CURRENTLY WORKING ON ignore that i said id reblog and explain i have like less than 10 followers whoops and im really excited about these aus okay and im on mobile RIP read more option
Fic one: it's an AU called New Neo World Program and what happens in it is that Makoto and his class and 77 and 79 and Komaru, Natsumi, Yuta, Ryota, and Yasuke are trapped within the digital world, and is forced into a killing game by AI Junko.
Outside of the NNWP, Jin Kirigiri is doing all he can to find the missing kids and keep the families and friends from finding out, as well as find who's responsible while having a constant live feed of the game hacked into his computer screen. The Warriors of Hope, the Student Council, and a few dr3 characters are involved in this side.
Extra tidbits of the AU: the NNWP is created by Chiaki and Chihiro, and they created Usami, Alter Ego, and Alter Chiaki to be in the world
The monokubs are involved
The protags of the games and Zero are main focus (while makoto is the main main focus because his role in this story is so big you cant take it out and have the same story trust me his fake out deaths here are legit freak out worthy)
Real Junko in this AU is Ryoko, so lore on AI Junko is simple and spoilers. Each character in this story is used and each have a good amount of screentime, and I am a huge multi shipper so even though I write ships in this au and also like, relationships in this au can totally be read into okay? There's a lot of that too lol
I'm afraid if I say more I'll spoil some real big reactionary moments so 👀 totally don't make me accidentally spill them 👀
Fic two: an AU that is currently called Makoto Harem Au because I have not thought of a good name for this yet. It's set in a non despair au at Hope's Peak and of course Makoto is the protag in this and the au's pov is solely his except when Plot Appears that he can't know about. Instead of it being a multi chapter story it's actually a collection of stories/oneshots that are self contained content even though they allude to each othet sometimes. This is a crack au with angst too whoops.
Extra tidbits: Since this AU is non despair, I had decided that Makoto can remember the canon timeline, has photographic memory, and suffers greatly for it
There are major differences in characters and their reactions to certain things due to this au being in a non despair world and this au is mainly crack, so despite the traumatic moments I may put in here it's meant to be something to laugh at too
There are relationships present but they're mainly background and it's a makoto harem they're not important though they are implied - not heavily, but enough to figure out if you think about it

Fic three: An Au called Class Despairs where Junko despairs all three classes instead of just 77 and kills Chiaki, Makoto, and Shuichi to do it. Somehow, though, they survive yet they still find their friends despaired, so they are forced to do other things before they can try and save their classmates.
And what are those things, pray tell? Save the families and friends of the despairs (and their own too) before Junko makes them kill them, find a base of operations so when the world crumbles they have somewhere to hide out, and plan to survive in a practically apocalyptic world.
Extra tidbits: the au is actually called 3 Class Despairs vs 3 people of hope but Class Despairs sound better
The reason this au spawned is because my friend and I were like huh, in the other two classes, who would resemble Chiaki for them - and got Makoto and Shuichi respectively.
That au were also one shots where the three actually died and small bits of despairs living their life.
The group the 3 make is called Ultimate Hope not because they want to rival Ultimate Despair, but because they're a beacon for the people and the people started calling them that
None of the despairs know the 3 are alive, their location, or who's in UH respectively because of codenames and hidden faces
UH is allies with the Future Foundation, but since they have clashing ideologies, it's a thin line and the FF has publically labeled them enemies so what can they do oops.
Yes Towa City does play a part
The killing game that gets broadcasted in place of class 78 is the student council.
Makoto is leader leader of the group, as he is the most outspoken and the one the people and others recognize the most.
This fic is set into arcs, so it's... a really, really long story...

Backstory/Background:
Nicholai is born to a father who had moved from Russia to France two years prior to Nicholai's birth. Nine or so months before he had met Nicholai's mother. The pair had conceived Nicholai during a one night stand together. After which, Nicholai moved to America, not knowing she had been pregnant then. Nine months later Nicholai had been born on May twenty-fifth, this incident lead to his mother and father ultimately hooking up for good thinking that it would be best for their son, rather getting together our of something as silly as 'love'. Throughout the following years however, it became a point of contention for the family of three. By the time Nicholai had been old enough to begin remember things, his father had taken to drinking excessively as well as flying into fits of rage upon the stresses of life trying to provide for his family. His then wife taking the brunt of many of these rage induced attacks. But often enough the trickle down had landed Nicholai in his fathers sights. Who would hit, yell at, or lock him in a small container for hours at a time.
By the time Nicholai had started school his father had lessened on the hitting part of the abuse toward his son but where that aspect had been lessened, the less obvious ones had heightened. However, Nicholai had still proven himself a very intelligent young boy. Getting praise from his teachers usually and suggestions to his parents to put him in gifted programs, noting that even for a boy so young he had seemed to be very intelligent. His father had refused to place him in such programs however, claiming that it would only get his boy bullied in school and make him into a freak. This, Nicholai had thought, was one thing he had liked that his father had done for him. As he also did not want to go to any of the gifted classes at that time either. As well, Nicholai's mother was very doting, often times it seemed she had taken on the burden to love Nicholai enough for both her and his father's concerning lack of love toward his son. It had often felt smothering to the young boy, now worried she would be and how nervous she had often made him feel growing up. It instilled in him a sense that he was in constant danger.
Nicholai had found it hard to make and keep friends while going to school. He often talked in a strange way that none of the other kids quite caught on to. He was also clearly smarter than all the other kids too, vastly smarter and so the conversations and play time had seemed challenging to Nicholai as he often felt he had needed to dumb himself down in order to enjoy these moments with the other children. Something he didn't really want to do. But, giving in a little, he started to clown around during classes, playing little tricks on others or showing off little tricks from childish inventions he would make on show and tell days. It was during one of these days where his parents had requested his parents switch him over to a private school that would be more suitable for him. Caving in, his father agreed, once he was told that he would not have to pay for this scholarship. So, Nicholai had to restart again, trying to make friends. Only this time, the children were not so easily amused by his tricks and toys.
The children at his new school were the children of very important, powerful or rich families in all of Gotham and some of the surrounding areas. Nicholai was new, and vastly different from all of the other children around him now, and like blood in the water of a bunch of hungry Sharks, a lot of the children could tell he was not one of them. So they ignored him most of the time. One day, another day of show and tell Nicholai had brought a frog to class, showing it off and letting it hop around the floor in front of him. He had been absolutely proud of the little toy he had made. Though none of the other children had seemed impressed. One raised their hand, and Nicholai had them ask their question. It was a rather innocent one, he thought, could the frog do anything else but hop. Nicholai had smiled at the other child before moving to pick the frog up and bring it toward the girls desk and telling her to stick her hand into the frogs mouth. Which she did, and the frog spit up some slime onto her hand. She was thoroughly disgusted but it did get a lough out of one other boy, a tame one, but a laugh.
Nicholai had looked over toward the dark haired boy sitting several desks away and watching as they tried to hid their giggling and go back to a more serious state. Looking away he brought his frog back and took most of the goop back as he moved back to his seat at the teachers behest. Later that day Nicholai had learned that the boy who laughed was Bruce Wayne, of all people. A Wayne. He could not believe he had made a Wayne laugh at something so simple! However, he could not get this boy to give him all that much attention. No matter what he had tried the other seemed distant from him, and everyone else. Away in his own world, it had seemed. Nicholai had eventually given up and looked elsewhere for friendship. As he was doing so, his father had again picked up beating him physically. This time making sure he kept quiet and to not hit the boy anywhere anyone might see. That was until one night he had managed to hit Nicholai so hard that Nicholai had need to go to the clinic to get healed. He was to stay their several nights.
This had not made his father happy, but Nicholai knew he would at least have a few days of sanity before going back home. There he had met Martha Wayne, Bruce Wayne's mother. Who, for some reason was there. She had come up to him and asked if he had gone to school with her son, then asked if he had been the boy with the toy frog. The reason for her asking this was because just a moment before Nicholai had been working on the toy frog in question while sitting in his bed resting. Then Martha had asked if he knew her son Bruce Wayne, Nicholai had confessed to the older woman that him and Bruce had not met yet. Martha seemed to look a bit desperate then, and asked if he would like to come over for a play date sometime that week, as she would love for her Bruce to make a friend, and Bruce had talked a lot about a boy who built a toy frog, with her. Martha had even tried to sugar coat her offer by bringing up that it would 'get him out of his house' for a couple of hours, daily, if the boys play date went well enough.
With that offer she told him she was going to go and that she would come talk to him later on and let him rest as he thought about the proposal to be her sons friend. Nicholai wasn't going to say no. Because he had also been wanting a friend for a long time too, and something about Bruce had told him that they could be very great friends. Over the next couple of days Nicholai had healed up and enjoyed the peace of the clinic, still not having seen Martha since her request to him. His mother had left fifteen minutes earlier to go grab him something to eat at a local store, for lunch. However, an alarm going off had set the entire peaceful setting of the hospital into almost complete chaos. The lights had gone off, and Nicholai had to cover his ears upon hearing popping noises very close by. What he could only assume were the sounds of some sort of gun or something similar. Being just a young boy he couldn't tell, of course. Moving quickly he tried to get to his door before a man stepped in front of it. Then asked 'what he had here'.
The look in the mans eyes had told Nicholai to run, to get away from the man turning he tried darting for the other side of the room, but the much larger, stronger, and faster older man was too quick. Grabbing Nicholai by his left wrist and jerking the child closer, their arms had wrapped around Nicholai before he was being forcibly carried out of the room and down the hallway. Screaming for the man to let him go and all other sorts of things as he squirmed to try and break free, seeing several people working at the clinic being shouted at by either the man carrying him, or any of the men that were with him, before getting shot when they didn't tell the man what he had wanted to know. Nicholai had witnessed the majority of the incident take place, right toward it's conclusion where he had ultimately been kidnapped by the gang as they rushed to leave the hospital with whatever they had been there to do, being done. For several months or so afterword Nicholai was subjected to many forms of abuse from the gang, of even the most sadistic of natures.
Then, just like that, they had let him go, as if nothing had even happened. Even dropping him off back home. His mother was in tears about his return, happy he wasn't dead in a ditch somewhere like most other children. Nicholai's father however, greeted him with a smack to the back of the head and a comment on how stupid could he be to get himself kidnapped. Along with many other cruel things. Nicholai had gone to therapy after this for several weeks. When it was concluded that he had more or less blacked out MOST if not all of what had happened to his time in captivity. His mother was told to give him some pills that would help keep the memories locked away and eventually he would totally forget about them. After a month Nicholai had returned back to school as if nothing had happened, a few kids asked where he had been all this time, but for the life of him he couldn't really remember. In time life did move on as usual, Nicholai returned back to his school work, focusing a lot more on that than in making friends, even though he would have stilled liked to have had them.
A couple of years passed without incident, Bruce and Nicholai never got the chance to have their play date. Martha had asked more often when seeing Nicholai, how he had been feeling, rather than bringing up play dates. However, a incident happened one day after a night out at the movie. Nicholai was across the street from the movie theater as he waited for his father to finish up some business he had to do. Looking out toward the lights of the theater, Nicholai sighed. He wished his father wouldn't bring him along for these sort of things, but his father had said one day he might have to learn the 'trade' in order to support himself and his family. Nicholai didn't think being a criminal was worth it. Though as he sat in the car he mused about his future, imagining himself most often telling jokes to a large crowd of people. The thought of people laughing at his jokes was much more alluring to him. Smiling he continued to look toward the lights, then toward the many people leaving the theater, their he had spotted a couple of familiar faces exiting later in the evening followed by those all too familiar popping noises. Ducking down, Nicholai had covered his ears, the sounds stirring in him a uncharacteristic response for him, absolute uncaring numbness.
With his body trembling he moved his hands from his ears and wrapped them around himself as he listened to the shouting, both Bruce's, he could tell and the people gathering around. His father had come to the car and climbed in looking toward the back where he had left Nicholai, seeing his son was there the man had started the car quickly before speeding off. Nicholai sat up, looking back toward the scene as police were arriving. He then looked toward his father as the other tossed a few items into the passenger seat. Nicholai had crossed his arms over his stomach, before commenting that Gotham's criminal side was growing out of control. Nicholai had noticed that Gotham had a very high crime rate some time ago, and with each year it got worse. The next day at school, Bruce was of course not there. It seemed that the Wayne's were gunned down, the news had been nonstop talking about it since the incident happened. Bruce was now an orphan, left to be raised by his butler all alone in the mansion on a creepy side of the city.
Years had passed after that, Nicholai continued to work on his studies, eventually growing an interest in chemicals. By this time he was in middle school and starting into a phase some might have called his punk phase. In this phase he got really into piercings and wearing fake tattoos for a while, before eventually switching to other phases. You know, as a person finding themselves is one to do. Nicholai eventually settled on all of them, because he became a big fan of having multiple choices. Also during this time he met a young blond girl who was a bit of a spoiled brat, but he never quite got her name, something to do with a motorcycle or something of the sort, was all he could remember. The reason for this is because at some point in middle school he had moved up a few grades, having taken on the programs that would allow him to skip grades and graduate from school earlier than others. From time to time for a while he would even see Bruce Wayne here and there, but the two had, by that point in time moved on with their own separate lives. He had heard some rumors that Bruce had gotten very aggressive since his parents deaths.
Nicholai continued with his school work, excelling and eventually he had met the young girl who would in some years time become his wife. By this time in his life he had been sixteen years old and helping his father with some odd petty theft jobs here and their to help support his family. His plate was full, but he hadn't minded it all too much. Still he found himself wishing to become a comedian, that way he didn't need to work so hard anymore. He and Jeannie had become quite close and were absolutely enamored with themselves. He had truly fallen in love with her, and he couldn't imagine any good future without her in it. In time he had graduated early from high school and moved on to college, Jeannie and Nicholai had remained close even as he had to go away for college. Four years later he had graduated and taken a job offer to work as a chemical engineer in a plant in Gotham, by this time in his life he had long stopped helping his father do petty thieving jobs and decided to move on from that life and move Jeannie to a decent part of the city.
About a year after moving out of his parents his father had been murdered by someone in the crime world. Nicholai had ignored the majority of it, not wanting to know what had happened and quietly laid his father to rest without looking into the death any further. About two years after his mother had also gotten in a horrific car accident that had left her in a coma where eventually Nicholai had to give the order to take her off life support. Jeannie had supported and taken care of him through all of it, showing him that she had loved him just as much as he loved her. Eventually they talked about having a child together, starting their own family. In this time Nicholai continued to work as a chemist and work with the plant, however, his dreams of being a comedian had not waned. So one night, he went to Jeannie and asked her opinion. She had encouraged him to do what made him happy. Sure that he could always go back to the plant if things didn't go well. After hearing her opinion he decided to take the chance, he could live with a chance to do something he had always wanted to do.
Though about a year or so into his attempt the pair had fallen onto hard times, Jeannie was nearly nine months or so pregnant at the time and had decided to raise some concerns about money. Eventually she told Nicholai that he should think about returning to his job at the plant. Nicholai sighed, agreeing at first but remembered his connections with the criminal world. One night after his acts he went around asking about little bits of information for some hits on a few houses, petty thievery was something the Gotham police barely even bat an eye at half the time, he knew he could make some quick cash this way to both support his dream career and wife and child with a few marks here and there. Nicholai had failed to find anything however and retreated back home. It wasn't until a few weeks later when two familiar goons he had known came around his house, and mentioned in front of Jeannie that they had some jobs for him. She of course was not happy about it, Nicholai could tell. But he knew from his time in childhood that it wasn't something to be so worried about.
Trying to assure Jeannie that everything would be okay, he would do some odd jobs for the men and their gang here and there in order to support them until he made some headway, he was sure he was close to breaking into the business of comedy in no time. As people who were fame hungry usually thought before ending up homeless on the streets of California shooting up through their toes and shitting on sidewalks. Nicholai agreed to take on the odd job the two men were offering. Looking toward the red hood they had brought along with them. He wasn't so sure what the point of it was to continue the sideshow, but he knew the routine. Eventually donning the hood and costume while committing the petty thefts. However this had only served to bring him more attention than he would have liked. Again and again the news would report on the 'Red Hood' and it was just growing more and more popular. Eventually Nicholai had decided to tell his new bosses that he wanted out, that the risk was too high now and he decided he would go back to work in chemical engineering.
Jeannie had been more than thrilled to hear about this, however, the gang he was working for had not been, at all. Nicholai told Jeannie he would not do any more jobs, and he would work a legitimate job to support her and their child. It had seemed to take a lot of stress off Jeannie's shoulders that he only then had just realized was effecting his wife, the woman he would claim was his soul mate if he had even believed in such a thing. It made him feel ashamed for having been so selfish and put her through something like that. A few nights later, however, the two men had come back to their home one night. Again, the suggested a job to Nicholai, which Nicholai had turned down. But this time, they weren't asking him to do it, they were telling him to do it. Or they would expose him as the red hood to the entire city and he would be locked up and never even see his child or wife again. Jeannie had told him it was alright, to take the final job and then they could move on with their lives. Nicholai wanted to protest, knowing how this worked for criminals, having grown up around it.
But seeing his wife's worry had returned and being concerned for his unborn child he agreed, not wanting his wife to become stressed this close to having their child he told the men he would take on this last final job for them and then asked where it would be. They had said it would be at the plan, where he had worked. They had known, and knew he would be perfect for this particular job. Oh, they had assured him that it would be the last job. They prooomised she would be save and they could move on with their lives. Then they told him where to meet them the next day. After they left Nicholai had hugged his wife, apologizing to her for being so stupid and allowing this entire thing to happen and get this far. Before then kneeling and holding her stomach, cooing at it a bit and telling his child that he was going to fix it, he promised. Then he stood and helped his wife to bed. The next day he had met the men at the spot they had instructed, just before sun down they had arrived and handed him the suit. Nicholai put it on, reluctantly.
Some time later they were breaking into the plant and making their way to the destination point where they would be retrieving their package. However as they were leaving a pair of glowing eyes from the darkness had them stopping in their tracts. It was The Batman, as the other two men had probably said. Nicholai thought he was hearing them right anyway. Batman, what a silly name for a superhero, he thought. Of course he had heard of the thing before, everyone knew about Batman by now. The guy was running around like a chicken with his head cut off bringing justice all over the city. Batman was a big reason for Nicholai to want to stop before it got this far. However, it was too late for that now. Taking off he managed to dodge Batman’s attempts to stop him and leave the other guys behind. Which had at least given him some time to come to terms with his life as he knew it changing forever. He was going to prison, no doubt about that. How was he going to explain to the police that he had willingly chosen to commit all those crimes, except for this one time. This one time he didn't want to do it that meddling Batman had caught him.
It was a poor excuse and now the false floor was breaking underneath him. Bolting toward the chemicals he runs onto one of the bridges only for Batman to drop right in front of him. As the man yelled at him to stop Nicholai turned and darted the other way, still carrying the package. Taking another bridge he runs across only to get his arm sliced by something the other male threw at him. He was definitely not going to beat this guy, and he knew that. But he was also not going to give up, he was going to get out of there and get back to his wife. At least he would have liked to think that's how it all worked out. However Batman eventually catches up to him and kicks him over the side of the bridge and down toward the vats of chemicals. Landing on the concrete floor, hard, he was sure he broke something then. Pushing himself up he continued to try and flee. Batman dropping behind him and holding up something. Nicholai turned down toward one row of chemical filled vats, surely thinking that Batman wasn't stupid enough to throw anything that might break any of the vats-
And oh would you look at that. Batman decided to blow it all up. This caused the vats to break apart and spill their contents out all over the place, sending the chemical waste splashing all over Nicholai. Batman was fine though, he just zipped on out of their, as you do when your a millionaire dressed up like a bat and it's not Halloween. Anyway, back to the backstory. So Nicholai was washed away with some chemicals and somehow went down the drain and out into the sewers where he continued to be contaminated and horrifically mutated into what everyone would later come to know as The Joker. Eventually getting spit out of the sewers and into some nice fresh air and your normal every day dirty muddy water Nicholai lay on that cool mud as his body continued to change, smoke rising from his now overheating form. Then, eventually, it all stopped. The world had stopped spinning, the heat no longer bothered him, everything just stopped and then went black. At some point he woke up to the moon overhead, lighting up the entire area around him.
Nicholai eventually got up not noticing at first what had happened to him. Moving toward the water he tore the hood off his head and tossed to the side angrily, ripping away at the rest of the suit he was wearing, wanting nothing more to do with it or the gang. He hoped that them along with Batman had thought of him to be dead. Hearing a noise when he did this he could only think of it as clicking, constant clicking noises. Nicholai eventually noticed that he had changed and this had caused him to go into a fit of giggles. Eventually he had made his way back to the city and to his home only to find it had burned to the ground. Dropping onto the ground, Nicholai laughed even louder then he had back at the drainage pool he woke up by. Eventually he would come to learn that his wife and unborn child had died from a short circuit. From that point on the man known as Nicholai had stopped existing.
Some years later the man known as The Joker and a million other alias' by this point in his life had been sitting in a chair waiting to meet his newest psychiatrist and begin the game again. He had taken to scaring most if not all of his previous psychiatrists away. One day a young girl with long blonde hair and big bright blue eyes, wearing glasses had come into the room. From what he could tell, she was just out of college. Not like the old coots he had put up with before her. Or the staff he had to deal with any other time while at Arkham Asylum. So the Joker did what he did best, when he began the game. When he wasn't running his criminal empire directly. When he was 'calm'. He talked to her. Teased her and befriended her. It was easy. It was easy because he could see in her what someone he once knew had been like. Without a friend in the world, that yearning. Then there was the look of an animal who had been locked in a cage. He could see it all in this girl. Each day he would win her over, more and more.
Many would say that he had manipulated her. That he used her and turned her from good to bad. But He had only freed her. She just needed that extra...push. Everything else about her was there all along, scratching at the floorboards, waiting, wanting to be freed. Joker had the key, only him. Because it was only her that needed the freedom he could provide. Then one day, with the cage door open she had come to him, it had been the first of April, if he would later remember right. She was excited, because she knew what crimes she was committing as she walked those halls, key in hand, stabbing guards and other staff in the throats with needles filled with...who knew what. With a smirk on his face he had taken the young woman's hand and let her drag him through the facility to their get away car. The woman had taken her new freedom to such an extreme level, another fit of giggles had rocked Joker as he watched her chaotic bursts of energy and her decisions based on a whim. She was hair brained. Then she turned to him, she said, she would be called Harley Quinn from that day forward.
So she was, Harley Quinn, from that day forward, and he was hers. Joker smirked however, not showing the same kind of attachment to her. The days went on like that, till it came time. She wanted to commit to him entirely, all of her. During a drive she stopped at the chemical plant, reminding him of the time he had told her in a session they had, when it came to questions about his odd inhuman features. He told her he took a swim in one of the chemical vats at the plant. It wasn't exactly the truth. But it was clearly something she had fixated on and she herself had decided that she would also, take a chemical bath. Joker didn't stop her, of course. Why would he. He was curious about what would happen to her. So into the plant they went and he watched her amp herself up to jump. With a little prodding he asked her if she would die for him. Harley exclaimed a yes, still working up her nerve. Then he asked her if she would live for him. This had seemed to stump her for a moment. Then a serious look came over her face, she said yes and ran toward the vat, leaping from the ledge and dropping down into the pool of chemicals.
Joker thought that she might have been dead, then. He was just about to leave but, suddenly, he had stopped himself and turned back before jumping back in after her. Plunging into the chemicals and grabbing onto her. Rising out of the waste he lift her unconscious body up from the liquids. Then opened her airways, chemicals had dripped off his dark green hair that half clung to his face. Staring at her that day, something old and familiar to him stirred, if only for a moment. He thought for a moment he might have cared about this woman. As impossible as it would seem to him, something had told him he could let her die, that he wanted to keep her. Dragging her out of the liquids he gets himself and her out of the plant and back toward their car where he sped off into the night.
Some nights later Joker took her too get some pets. She had wanted them after waking up, and though he really didn't want any on his own. Again the feeling, small yet familiar had hit him. He caved, taking her to get three baby Hyena's in the black market. Joker didn't pay them much mind, but they had made Harley very happy, and sometimes he found himself amused by this before going back to ignoring them again as he worked on his plans to deal with Batman. Sometimes Harley would be more than annoying with her need for attention, however. Which had grated on his patience as time had gone. His prior attempts to get her to leave him alone was often ignored. But he did cave and eventually find that hitting her or threatening her silenced her up real good. So he went with that option instead of being rational. Because why not, he's not a saint, and the man he used to be was no longer their. That man was dead, he was The Joker now, and who was she, getting on his nerves half the time. Almost, he had noticed, intentionally.
That is how life had gone on for many years, him and Batman playing their game back and forth. Harley being a third wheel, but every so often he would show her how he felt, even if she had annoyed him a lot. He had secretly loved her, too. But after about forty minutes he would abandoned her to get back to his game with Batman, starting the cycle again. At some point he had those Hyena’s of His and Harley’s eat Salvatore Guzzo alive.

Star Trek: TOS - title references
A list of all references (I think, I might have missed some) in the episode titles of Star Trek: The Original Series. In addition to the references to various literary works, I’ve also included the titles with references to proverbs or obscure words that non-native English speakers or even some English speakers might not catch. So, basically, a bunch of useless trivia for nerds like me.
(I’m using the chronological order for the episodes. Also, I’m not putting links on the sources because Tumblr is a b*tch)
S1EP1 Where No Man Has Gone Before - the title is obviously a reference to the final line in the series-opening poem "To boldly go where no man has gone before". Appropriate for the pilot episode
S1EP4 The Enemy Within - the origin of this phrase is unknown, it has been used for a long time in various contexts like within religion and military. Example from A Course of Family Prayer by Augustus Montague Toplady (1794) "Lord thou knowest our weaknesses... our danger from the enemy of souls... and above all, from the enemy within, our vile flesh and deceitful hearts, so apt to betray us into sin." S1EP5 The Man Trap - a slang word for a woman who is purported to be dangerously seductive or who schemes in her amours; a femme fatale. An obvious reference to how the creature lures its victims in by changing its appearance according to the victim’s preferences. (source: Dictionary.com)
S1EP6 The Naked Time - Nakedness can refer to literal physical nakedness or a figurative baring of the soul which we saw happen to the crewmembers, but especially to Kirk and Spock.
S1EP7 Charlie X - X is often used to represent the name of a person or thing that is not known or stated, can also be used to indicate a mistake or to remove something from lists (source: Cambridge English Dictionary)
S1EP8 Balance of Terror - the distribution of nuclear arms among nations such that no nation will initiate an attack for fear of retaliation (source: Dictionary.com)
S1EP9 What Are Little Girls Made Of? - "What are little girls made of? Sugar and spice and all things nice, that's what little girls are made of." Old nursery rhyme from the early 19th century.
S1EP10 Dagger of the Mind - Machbet, Act 2, Scene 1, Line 38, "Or art thou but a dagger of the mind, a false creation, proceeding from the heat-oppressèd brain?" (37-39) Machbet is experiencing a moral crisis about killing Duncan and is imagining the act he is about to commit. This manifest itself as a hallucination; “a dagger of the mind”. “ "Dagger of the mind" can read in two ways. First, there's the literal contrast of tangible reality and Macbeth's imagination. Second, you have the metaphor of Macbeth's guilt—and doubt—manifesting itself as a vision as he waits upon the signal from his wife. False in this context plays upon a number of meanings. While the primary reading is "unreal," shades of "deceitful, inconstant; not to be trusted" are equally applicable.” What Machbet is seeing is not reality, just like the feelings the neural neutraliser causes in Kirk. S1EP11 Miri - Name with a Hebrew origin that’s most common meaning seems to be “bitter”. Other possible meanings are “sea of sorrow, beloved, wished for child”. (source: various baby name sites, lol)
S1EP12 The Conscience of the King - Hamlet, Act 2, Scene 2, Line 565 "the play's the thing wherein I'll catch the conscience of the king" (564-65) Hamlet stages a play of his father's murder to get Claudius to confess his involvement. This is also the play that the Karidians perform on the Enterprise. Since this episode is also about catching a murderer the title choice should be obvious.
S1EP15&16 The Menagerie - menagerie: a collection of wild animals kept in captivity for exhibition; A strange or diverse collection of people or things (source: Oxford Eglish Dictionary)
S1EP22 The Return of the Archons - from the Greek word archon: ruler, to rule
S1EP25 This Side of Paradise - possibly taking its name from F. Scott Fitzgerald's book This Side of Paradise or the poem that gave its name to the book Tiare Tahiti by Rubert Brooke. The book explores love warped by greed and status-seeking. The poem explores afterlife and how it might not be all that it's made out to be, hence the phrase "this (worse) side of paradise", possibly alluding to how Spock and the other crew members have to give up their personalities and real feelings to reach euphoria. In short, paradise is a lie they have to wake up from.
S1EP27 Errand of Mercy - The title comes from The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens "It is an errand of mercy which brings me here. Pray, let me discharge it". S1EP29 The City on the Edge of Forever - “The title is a reference to both the dead city on the planet and New York, in the original script when Kirk first sees the city sparkling on a hilltop like a jewel he says it looks like "a city on the edge of forever"“ (whatever that means) (btw the original script was so bad guys, like so bad (Kirk orders his crew to execute a guy for murder, like wtf) (source: Memory Alpha - The City on the Edge of Forever: Story)
S2EP1 Catspaw - “The title of this episode, "Catspaw", is a term that describes a person used by another as a dupe; as McCoy points out, Scott and Sulu are used as catspaws to lure more crewmen down” (source: Memory Alpha - Catspaw: Story and production)
S2EP2 Metamorphosis - Definition of Metamorphosis 1a: change of physical form, structure, or substance especially by supernatural means, b: a striking alteration in appearance, character, or circumstances 2: a typically marked and more or less abrupt developmental change in the form or structure of an animal (such as a butterfly or a frog) occurring subsequent to birth or hatching (source: Merriam Webster)
S2EP3 Friday's Child - The episode's title is derived from a traditional English poem, known as "Monday's Child". The reference is to a line in the poem: "Friday's child is full of woe" or alternatively "Friday's child is loving and giving". S2EP4 Who Mourns for Adonais - “The title is taken from Adonais: An Elegy on the Death of John Keats by Percy Bysshe Shelley. Line 415 reads "Who mourns for Adonais?". Shelley's Adonais is derived from Adonis, a male figure of Greek mythology associated with fertility. S2EP7 Wolf in the Fold - An ancient expression that means that there is someone in a group who presents a danger to the rest of the people in it. The first known usage in written form is from Virgil's Eclogues:

S2EP8 The Changeling - Definition of Changeling: 1) archaic: turncoat, 2) a child secretly exchanged for another in infancy, 3) archaic: imbecile (source: Merriam-Webster)
S2EP9 The Apple - The title is most likely a reference to the Apple in the creation story. The citizens of the planet Gamma Trinaguli VI (which was referred to as the Garden of Eden) were being controlled by a computer called Vaal. When Vaal was destroyed, they bit the metaphorical Apple from the Tree of Knowledge and were banished from the Garden.
S2EP12 I, Mudd - “Possible inspirations for the title include: I, Robot, Isaac Asimov's 1950 android-themed short story collection, the title of which was itself inspired by "I, Robot", Eando Binder's 1939 short story with an android hero, which had been adapted for TV in 1964 with Leonard Nimoy in a supporting role; I, Claudius, a 1934 novel by Robert Graves about the life of the Roman Emperor Claudius (the 1976 BBC production of which featured Patrick Stewart). S2Ep21 By Any Other Name - “The title is part of a quotation from Romeo and Juliet, Act II, Scene 2. "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." Kirk recites it to Kelinda. It is often used to convey the idea that although you can change the name of something, its nature will remain the same. In this case, the Kelvans become Human. S2Ep07 Is There in Truth No Beauty? - The episode title is from a poem by the 17th century English poet and clergyman George Herbert, from his poem "Jordan (I)", line 2: "Who says that fictions only and false hair/ Become a verse? Is there in truth no beauty?" (source: Memory Alpha - Is There in Truth No Beauty?: Background information) ‘Jordan (I)’ is a poem about poetry: George Herbert takes as his theme the proper material for poetry, as well as the proper language for poetry. In the first stanza of ‘Jordan (I)’, Herbert asks, why is it that people consider only made-up or fictional stories and situations suitable for poetry? Why aren’t things that are true to life considered beautiful, and therefore fit material for the poet to use as well?... Herbert is questioning why poetry, which is itself a construction, has to express itself by referring to other false constructions, rather than directly depicting life as it is. S3EP11 Day of the Dove - The word dove in the title is a possible allusion to their status as symbols of peace and love. Appropriate for an episode where the Klingons and the Enterprise crew come together to defeat a common enemy.
S3Ep16 Whom the Gods Destroy - An adaption of an anonymous Greek proverb that is often wrongly attributed to Euripides. An early version of this phrase appears in the play Antigone by Sophocles, "Evil appears as good in the minds of those whom God leads to destruction ". The version in the title is spoken by Prometheus in the poem The Masque of Pandora (1875) by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow "Whom the gods destroy they first make mad” (source: Memory Alpha - Whom Gods Destroy: Story and Script)
S3Ep21 Requiem for Methuselah - “This episode's title is a dual allusion: first to a ritualistic liturgy of Roman Catholicism (and other related religions), the "Requiem" being a Mass for the dead, and second to Methuselah, son of the Biblical prophet Enoch and paternal grandfather to Noah, who was the longest-lived Human being in the Bible (in Genesis 5:21-27) having lived 969 years; existing for nearly a millennium, Methuselah's lifespan has historically become a proverbial reference for longevity.” (source: Memory Alpha - Requiem for Methuselah: Story)
S3Ep23 All Our Yesterdays - Machbet, Act 5, Scene 5, Line 22. A soliloquy after Macbeth's wife dies. "She should have died hereafter; There would have been a time for such a word. — To-morrow, and to-morrow, and to-morrow, Creeps in this petty pace from day to day, To the last syllable of recorded time; And all our yesterdays have lighted fools The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle! Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player That struts and frets his hour upon the stage And then is heard no more. It is a tale Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury. Signifying nothing." To paraphrase: people see the future as bright even though eventually everyone will die. Life is a walking shadow that will end in death, not a litten path to a brighter future. In the context of this episode, the title seems to allude to the time travel that takes place. Spock and McCoy are literally trapped in “our yesterday(s)”. Spock’s love interest Zarabeth is also long dead when they return back to the future, so she’s taking on the role of Lady Machbet.

Cupkayke Rewatches/Liveblogs Boueibu!
Season 1, Episode 4
I channeled En for about a week and was too lazy to quit playing Resident Evil and finish this liveblog buuuut better late than never, right?! I may only manage one of these a week but I just had a bunch of fanfic ideas (unrelated to watching the episode) so I figured I’d press onward and finish these. Mostly cuz I’m really interested in getting to season 2 because the Beppus are my favorite. But for now- IT’S THE EPISODE WHERE THEY GET BABYFIED! OMG CUTENESS ABOUND.
PS- I love the discussion that happened from my previous liveblog! Thank you @nardaviel, @angry-jewish-magical-girl (whom I cannot tag for some reason), @magiccatprincess and everyone else who contributed :3 ( @thatlittledandere I absolutely loved your flailing in your tags lol <3) Reactions make this a whole lot more fun for me- especially because the screencapping and formatting is so tedious. But anyway! ONWARD! I doubt this episode I’ll get that deep but WHO KNOWS.

En’s age crisis- again, he has a desire not to be seen as immature and is quick to call out childish behavior in others, but the moment his attention is brought to how he might be percieved as ‘old’, he obsesses on the negative aspects of it instead of the positive- which he was stressing as the better option only moments before.
This is really interesting but I don’t quite know what to make of it. If he doesn’t want to be seen as childish, but doesn’t want to be seen as old, what does he want to be seen as? Simply exactly his age? Boy, En, I have news for you... unless you’re a genetic miracle, no one looks exactly their age.

O’Keefe had to pay out $100,000 to one of the former ACORN employees after he handed over the entire unedited videos which the California AG reviewed and found, “no evidence of criminal conduct on the part of ACORN employees nor any evidence that any employee intended to aid or abet criminal conduct.”
He even admitted in that case that he was just trying to damage ACORN and wasn’t acting with any sort of journalistic objectivity.
His entire career is like that. He releases “damning” video evidence which when compared to the raw video prove to be heavily edited segments which misrepresent the stated views of the people he films by removing context or chronologically shifting the video to make it appear bad.
By comparison, O’Keefe makes media outlets like CNN and Fox with their horribly biased and non-journalistic practices look like absolute angels.
You’re acting like the one good employee ACORN had absolves the other horrible employees who willingly helped a supposed pimp who was prostituting out underage girls and never sought help from a child advocacy group let alone the police after the meeting. You’re doing some subterfuge yourself. If O’Keefe’s undercover vids on ACORN encouraged a reform and improved protocol on how employees react to pimps and who they should contact after, then it was worth it bc, apparently, most of the employees don’t have an idea of what is right or wrong, including when it involves pedophilia.
No wrongdoing was found to have occurred by ACORN when the full video came out. That was the findings of the California AG office and the federal Government Accountability Office.
Well, half true. The case in California was a terrible case and Okeefe should be ashamed for not following through on what the workers did after he left. But the Brooklyn DA reviewed the tapes that affected their region and found that although they were heavily edited, the most damning words were still very much in context.
There was 100% wrong doing found at ACORN. You’re a liar. There was no criminal wrong doing. As being an unethical asshole is not against the law. One of the employees caught on tape had gone to the police and had been leading on O’Keefe. There was no way for O’Keefe to know that; the rest of the employees did not. That employee sued him as they lost their job and were doing the right thing.
Which means the rest of them were actively giving advice for criminal conduct and had no intention of reporting it to the police.
Not really, the msm just do to okeefe what they did to center of medical progress. Throw around ‘deceptive edit’ and dont back it up when the full tapes are released.
What part is fake?

I’m sure I’m the minority opinion here but project veritas has a history of editing video. I don’t think we should look too much into what they do until they release raw footage. When it cuts to the background images for the “because it’s ratings” part it sounds very different than the preceding lines. CNN does suck 99% of the time but that doesn’t mean any attack against it is credible.
All videos are edited. Every single one. This ‘deceptive edit’ crap falls apart when the full vidoes are released showing it in the same context.
Ok then let’s wait until the full video is released before making concrete judgments.

So, politics aside. People stopped paying for real reporting and news. Combine the lack of interest in actual reporting, and the media mergers and newspaper buyouts, etc and you get this media environment. It rewards shock headlines and ‘fake news,’ because no one wanted to purchase journalism and even if they did, public trading of news companies means cost cutting and share holder profits are more important than news…. so what?

And NPR ain’t great, because government funding for it got cut years ago and the replacement ‘funding from ‘charitable foundations for agenda reporting,’ and listener donations sucks. So decent reporters bounce out of NPR ASAP and American suffers.

But this isn’t anything new. Sensationalist news has been a part of the human experience for centuries.
Media mongrel Hearst from the early 20th century made his fortune off of fake news. It was common in the 19th and early 20th century. Some what died down in the mid 20th century; and became dominant again at the end of the 20th century.

NPR has a horrible liberal bias. They’ll pick a topic like ‘The benefits of abortion’ and then discuss the topic in a somewhat fair manner. But the bias was built into the topic and no amount of honest discussion can overcome that, especially when 90% of the people talking are liberals.
I really like this response, because I agree, but not exactly in the same way. Your response illustrates a particular problem: You think NPR has a liberal bias, because you are to the right of it. I think NPR has a centrist bias, because I’m to the left of it. Either way, we both think NPR doesn’t represent our views fairly and doesn’t ask questions in an objective way.
NPR leans left; though not as much as CNN. If you were going to give it a scale of -10 to 10 (positive 10 being extreme conservative):
MSNBC: -8
CNN: -4
NPR: -2/-3
Fox: 4
National Review: 8
So if you’re a typical reader of Salon or viewer of MSNBC and you have been duped into thinking you’re somewhat moderate; than you may think NPR is “towards” the center. But there is no doubt that it leans left.
Business Insider did a piece of news source bias a few years back. NPR is, as per their research, not close to centrist but leftist .

As a regular NPR listener, I can assure you that they spend a wildly disproportionate amount of time pushing issues that are only important to a tiny minority of the population (surprise: that would be a varied number of far-left activist groups that send them press releases on the topic). In the particular example I’m thinking of, the cause represents something like 10% of a 5-10% minority in the U.S. I hear the same “news” and “personal interest” stories promoting that issue literally every day. The only things that ever change are the names of the people involved (and maybe one or two minor details). It’s the exact same political narrative, hammered over and over and over again. It is literally no longer newsworthy, yet I still hear it in their “news” coverage every day.
The thing is, I’m sure that NPR doesn’t even realize how disproportionately they’re covering the topic. It’s of particular interest to them and most of their audience because it reinforces their preexisting worldview biases…and the issue has been weaponized and is now being used to attack anyone on the “other” side of that issue.
The thing is that they make no bones about it being liberal, and they are at least good at disclosure. You hear how liberal they are every 15 minutes when the call out supporters.
They also have conservative guests on all the time. Congressmen, PR staff from think-tanks, candidates and staff. They come off as smart, engaged people just looking to make things better. Sure, most of the audience and all the staff think they’re wrong. But it’s opposition, not smears
If you just want to know what’s going on in the world, you could do a whole lot worse.
I stopped listening to NPR during the 2012 election. They would have a “panel” about a political topic. The Moderator would be a hard core democrat. Then he would have 3 panelists on. One who was extremely far left (socialist), one who was a hard core Democrat, and one who was moderate (who they called a Republican). The “Republican” threw Romney and Republicans under the bus on every topic and talked about how Republicans were extreme (the guy supposedly representing Right).
That panel would have been horrible enough had they had a real conservative on there who actually believed in Republican policies (as he would be out numbered 3:1); but the fact that they put up a strawman of a Republican on just so he could provide legitimacy to the program was down right infuriating. Fuck that network.

I may not agree with most of y’all on a lot of issues, but I do agree that there are loads of issues plagueing(sp?) this country. Media and journalism being pretty damn high up there. Especially the fact that it is a driving force if the polarization and partisanship of politics we have today.
I am a big fan of government funded stuff like NPR/PBS/etc, but the thing I am worried about just as you are is how can this be funded by the [insert political party] without them having undue influence over content and context that is out out…it’s a tough question with a probably even tougher solution.
Every group will deny and try to fight news and reporting that makes them look bad. It’s PR, I get it, but when that party is directly responsible for the funding of said programming, how can one prevent retaliation when they report on the actions (good or bad) of that party.
If liberals can post salon and mother jones articles 24/7 on r/politics, they’ll probably believe whatever CNN told them anyway.

Consensus and time.
Most of the time, most of the news from all these different “partisan” outlets is actually identical. There’s not much difference in the handling of facts, only the angle or the narrative. So when you’re looking up a story that actually matters, read the same story from 8 different, competing, clashing outlets so that forming a narrative is impossible.
News outlets are dishonest, but they don’t usually fabricate. Their spin is more like a reality TV show being edited, inserting context, or removing relevant facts. Reading all the different edits at the same time quickly reveals what is craft, and what is real. Once you do that, you have the facts.
The news brings you the facts because that’s what you ask for. But that’s not really what people want. Their business model is about offering clarity, interpreting the facts into understandable storylines. They take a complicated, crowded, confusing world, and make it nice and neat. Demand is created for a product that has nothing to do with facts. If the news industry was a gas station, facts would be the gasoline, and narrative would be the snacks and drinks.
“The news” is an entertainment product. News junkies are not informed people, they are just entertainment addicts. If you want to be informed, you have to think like a journalist, not an addict.
e: TV news is especially bad because of the medium. TV is slow, information-light, and non-interactive. Good for interviews and speeches, little else.
At the end of the day, this is what happens if you leave journalism to the free market. State sponsored news would be infinitely worse, of course, but this video is a perfect example of what happens when you try and make informing people a business.
I only trust news that doesn’t use click bait titles, doesn’t use dramatic language, and moves on to something else once the segment is over. That pretty much leaves pbs.
The current media situation is a direct result of the elimination of the fairness doctrine by Reagan, and especially the Telecommunications act of 1996 courtesy of Clinton. It’s astoundingly difficult to get a straight true version of almost any news event these days.

With the internet and the democratization of information, it is not that difficult to get actual hard facts and even read spin from all sides and form your own opinion.
I think most people are just either lazy, don’t care, or want to read something from their perspective. With your take, it seems the only logical solution would be some state intervention or some new law, which would not be good.
That is a lot of trust in people. Most people just use the internet to find the “facts” to back their pre-conceived belief and stop there.

I sort of disagree about the internet part. I think the internet contributes to the problem because it allows people with zero critical thinking skills access to reams of truly fake news that they aren’t equipped to deal with. I recall a few months ago my Facebook feed lit up with stories posted by my more conservative friends and relatives about how Clinton was under indictment, and had fled the country in a private jet with the FBI hot on her heels. Then there was the whole pizzagate thing that ended with a guy barging into a pizza restaurant with a gun looking for a nonexistent basement full of pedophilia victims. I don’t know what the solution to all this is because regulating the internet in any way that would alleviate the problem would have massive negative consequences, and would most likely be unconstitutional to boot.

I just completely disagree, and believe you, and others, are blowing it out of proportion. One, I understand many people get their “news” from facebook, but it is not a news source. Rarely are people actually reading the articles posted, just the headlines and others’ opinions and then arguing in the comment section. It is more of an activity than just getting the news.
And ok people are dumb and lazy, but still, the majority of Americans, as they should be, are politically apathetic and actually don’t care about any of this shit. They just want their cute cat videos and memes, go to their jobs pay for their shit and pursue their own happiness. It is tough to see that when you are passionate about politics and see the craziness going on, as am I, but it is true.
And pizzagate was a fringe conspiracy, not believed by many, and I understand that more were open to it being true, but only a very small amount actually actively believed in it. And, overtime, the community who did actively believed in it shrunk, and I believe that is a direct result of continuous research and discussion on the open internet. That guy who went to the pizza parlor clearly was crazy and has some other issues, and was he motivated or spurred by this small fringe conspiracy community? Yes, probably, but again, it was very, very small. I am more concerned about main stream news outlets and the left openly saying the GOP is going to kill people and all republicans are Nazis, which is all accepted and mainstream, and if true, I mean somewhat justifies violence, if they are all Nazis and going to kill people?
So, you speak of trying to find a solution to something that is not really a problem. That is just what scares me, the left and right do that all the time. Err on the side of not making laws or regulations or “solutions”, freedom and the market takes care of it. The internet is much more of solution than contributing to a small problem. That form of thinking, even from a conservative point of view, only leads down the road to regulation and control, and less freedom.
I’d agree with you if I didn’t see people I regarded as reasonable and intelligent falling for this crap on a daily basis. I’ll also reiterate that I’m in no way advocating for more internet regulation, but I don’t buy the free market will fix things argument either. The free market follows profits, and telling people what they want to hear will always be more profitable, than telling simple truth.
Yes, the internet gives critical-thinkers the power to consume a ton of reports and form their own opinions, but most people aren’t doing this. Most people don’t use the internet for investigative or comparative journalism. Most people get their “news” from their television or radio broadcast of choice.
We don’t need new laws to regulate what can and cannot be reported. We don’t need a government agency picking winners and losers by controlling funding or airtime. We need some goddamn leadership. We need a president or other high-visibility leader who can be trusted, who has proven integrity, and who communicates with “both sides” to speak to the importance of holding journalists and media networks accountable.
We need the press to keep the government in check, but we need to keep the press in check. “We”, on average, don’t give a shit, so it’s hard to see this starting with us. The corporate click-bait press isn’t likely to usher a true leader into the White House, and the people there now sure as hell aren’t going to change their tune to their own detriment, so I don’t know how we get here. Sad.

PP does actually sell fetal organs though… totaling on avg. $2-3k for all the organs sold in 1 fetus. This is not some conspiracy theory either. There are published receipts and invoices from organ/tissue repository companies ordering these fetal organs directly from PP to then sell to biotech or academic centers.
Shipping tissues is expensive, they aren’t dumping a fetus’s liver into a leftover Amazon Prime box and sending it on 1-week USPS. It involves very expensive refrigeration packages, fast shipping, and so on.
It’s so morally despicable that they’re giving the tissues to science. We should be cremating and burying the 5-gram clump of cells instead.

While I must admit I am generally liberal, even I have to say all the Trump-Russia collusion stories are getting old to see. Do I think some of the things that are reported, and some of Trump’s own actions and statements seem a little sketchy? Sure. But ultimately, that’s why there is currently some sort of investigation going on. I don’t need to hear about it every day because at this point there really isn’t too much more to report, and to be honest it just takes away from actually debating the policies that are being put out, especially health care currently. If something comes up in the future from this investigation or otherwise, sure let’s bring it up again and discuss it, but unless/until something like that occurs I would rather see more talk about policies.

O’Keefe had to pay out $100,000 to one of the former ACORN employees after he handed over the entire unedited videos which the California AG reviewed and found, “no evidence of criminal conduct on the part of ACORN employees nor any evidence that any employee intended to aid or abet criminal conduct.”
He even admitted in that case that he was just trying to damage ACORN and wasn’t acting with any sort of journalistic objectivity.
His entire career is like that. He releases “damning” video evidence which when compared to the raw video prove to be heavily edited segments which misrepresent the stated views of the people he films by removing context or chronologically shifting the video to make it appear bad.
By comparison, O’Keefe makes media outlets like CNN and Fox with their horribly biased and non-journalistic practices look like absolute angels.
You’re acting like the one good employee ACORN had absolves the other horrible employees who willingly helped a supposed pimp who was prostituting out underage girls and never sought help from a child advocacy group let alone the police after the meeting. You’re doing some subterfuge yourself. If O’Keefe’s undercover vids on ACORN encouraged a reform and improved protocol on how employees react to pimps and who they should contact after, then it was worth it bc, apparently, most of the employees don’t have an idea of what is right or wrong, including when it involves pedophilia.
No wrongdoing was found to have occurred by ACORN when the full video came out. That was the findings of the California AG office and the federal Government Accountability Office.
Well, half true. The case in California was a terrible case and Okeefe should be ashamed for not following through on what the workers did after he left. But the Brooklyn DA reviewed the tapes that affected their region and found that although they were heavily edited, the most damning words were still very much in context.
There was 100% wrong doing found at ACORN. You’re a liar. There was no criminal wrong doing. As being an unethical asshole is not against the law. One of the employees caught on tape had gone to the police and had been leading on O’Keefe. There was no way for O’Keefe to know that; the rest of the employees did not. That employee sued him as they lost their job and were doing the right thing.
Which means the rest of them were actively giving advice for criminal conduct and had no intention of reporting it to the police.
Not really, the msm just do to okeefe what they did to center of medical progress. Throw around ‘deceptive edit’ and dont back it up when the full tapes are released.

I’m sure I’m the minority opinion here but project veritas has a history of editing video. I don’t think we should look too much into what they do until they release raw footage. When it cuts to the background images for the “because it’s ratings” part it sounds very different than the preceding lines. CNN does suck 99% of the time but that doesn’t mean any attack against it is credible.
All videos are edited. Every single one. This ‘deceptive edit’ crap falls apart when the full vidoes are released showing it in the same context.
Ok then let’s wait until the full video is released before making concrete judgments.

Combine the lack of interest in actual reporting, and the media mergers and newspaper buyouts, etc and you get this media environment. It rewards shock headlines and ‘fake news,’ because no one wanted to purchase journalism and even if they did, public trading of news companies means cost cutting and share holder profits are more important than news…. so what?

NPR has a horrible liberal bias. They’ll pick a topic like ‘The benefits of abortion’ and then discuss the topic in a somewhat fair manner. But the bias was built into the topic and no amount of honest discussion can overcome that, especially when 90% of the people talking are liberals.
I really like this response, because I agree, but not exactly in the same way. Your response illustrates a particular problem: You think NPR has a liberal bias, because you are to the right of it. I think NPR has a centrist bias, because I’m to the left of it. Either way, we both think NPR doesn’t represent our views fairly and doesn’t ask questions in an objective way.

So if you’re a typical reader of Salon or viewer of MSNBC and you have been duped into thinking you’re somewhat moderate; than you may think NPR is “towards” the center. But there is no doubt that it leans left.

As a regular NPR listener, I can assure you that they spend a wildly disproportionate amount of time pushing issues that are only important to a tiny minority of the population (surprise: that would be a varied number of far-left activist groups that send them press releases on the topic). In the particular example I’m thinking of, the cause represents something like 10% of a 5-10% minority in the U.S. I hear the same “news” and “personal interest” stories promoting that issue literally every day. The only things that ever change are the names of the people involved (and maybe one or two minor details). It’s the exact same political narrative, hammered over and over and over again. It is literally no longer newsworthy, yet I still hear it in their “news” coverage every day.
The thing is, I’m sure that NPR doesn’t even realize how disproportionately they’re covering the topic. It’s of particular interest to them and most of their audience because it reinforces their preexisting worldview biases…and the issue has been weaponized and is now being used to attack anyone on the “other” side of that issue.
The thing is that they make no bones about it being liberal, and they are at least good at disclosure. You hear how liberal they are every 15 minutes when the call out supporters.
They also have conservative guests on all the time. Congressmen, PR staff from think-tanks, candidates and staff. They come off as smart, engaged people just looking to make things better. Sure, most of the audience and all the staff think they’re wrong. But it’s opposition, not smears
If you just want to know what’s going on in the world, you could do a whole lot worse.
I stopped listening to NPR during the 2012 election. They would have a “panel” about a political topic. The Moderator would be a hard core democrat. Then he would have 3 panelists on. One who was extremely far left (socialist), one who was a hard core Democrat, and one who was moderate (who they called a Republican). The “Republican” threw Romney and Republicans under the bus on every topic and talked about how Republicans were extreme (the guy supposedly representing Right).
That panel would have been horrible enough had they had a real conservative on there who actually believed in Republican policies (as he would be out numbered 3:1); but the fact that they put up a strawman of a Republican on just so he could provide legitimacy to the program was down right infuriating. Fuck that network.

I may not agree with most of y’all on a lot of issues, but I do agree that there are loads of issues plagueing(sp?) this country. Media and journalism being pretty damn high up there. Especially the fact that it is a driving force if the polarization and partisanship of politics we have today.
I am a big fan of government funded stuff like NPR/PBS/etc, but the thing I am worried about just as you are is how can this be funded by the [insert political party] without them having undue influence over content and context that is out out…it’s a tough question with a probably even tougher solution.
Every group will deny and try to fight news and reporting that makes them look bad. It’s PR, I get it, but when that party is directly responsible for the funding of said programming, how can one prevent retaliation when they report on the actions (good or bad) of that party.
If liberals can post salon and mother jones articles 24/7 on r/politics, they’ll probably believe whatever CNN told them anyway.

Most of the time, most of the news from all these different “partisan” outlets is actually identical. There’s not much difference in the handling of facts, only the angle or the narrative. So when you’re looking up a story that actually matters, read the same story from 8 different, competing, clashing outlets so that forming a narrative is impossible.
News outlets are dishonest, but they don’t usually fabricate. Their spin is more like a reality TV show being edited, inserting context, or removing relevant facts. Reading all the different edits at the same time quickly reveals what is craft, and what is real. Once you do that, you have the facts.
The news brings you the facts because that’s what you ask for. But that’s not really what people want. Their business model is about offering clarity, interpreting the facts into understandable storylines. They take a complicated, crowded, confusing world, and make it nice and neat. Demand is created for a product that has nothing to do with facts. If the news industry was a gas station, facts would be the gasoline, and narrative would be the snacks and drinks.
“The news” is an entertainment product. News junkies are not informed people, they are just entertainment addicts. If you want to be informed, you have to think like a journalist, not an addict.
e: TV news is especially bad because of the medium. TV is slow, information-light, and non-interactive. Good for interviews and speeches, little else.
At the end of the day, this is what happens if you leave journalism to the free market. State sponsored news would be infinitely worse, of course, but this video is a perfect example of what happens when you try and make informing people a business.
I only trust news that doesn’t use click bait titles, doesn’t use dramatic language, and moves on to something else once the segment is over. That pretty much leaves pbs.
The current media situation is a direct result of the elimination of the fairness doctrine by Reagan, and especially the Telecommunications act of 1996 courtesy of Clinton. It’s astoundingly difficult to get a straight true version of almost any news event these days.

With the internet and the democratization of information, it is not that difficult to get actual hard facts and even read spin from all sides and form your own opinion.
I think most people are just either lazy, don’t care, or want to read something from their perspective. With your take, it seems the only logical solution would be some state intervention or some new law, which would not be good.

I think the internet contributes to the problem because it allows people with zero critical thinking skills access to reams of truly fake news that they aren’t equipped to deal with. I recall a few months ago my Facebook feed lit up with stories posted by my more conservative friends and relatives about how Clinton was under indictment, and had fled the country in a private jet with the FBI hot on her heels. Then there was the whole pizzagate thing that ended with a guy barging into a pizza restaurant with a gun looking for a nonexistent basement full of pedophilia victims. I don’t know what the solution to all this is because regulating the internet in any way that would alleviate the problem would have massive negative consequences, and would most likely be unconstitutional to boot.

I am more concerned about main stream news outlets and the left openly saying the GOP is going to kill people and all republicans are Nazis, which is all accepted and mainstream, and if true, I mean somewhat justifies violence, if they are all Nazis and going to kill people?
So, you speak of trying to find a solution to something that is not really a problem. That is just what scares me, the left and right do that all the time. Err on the side of not making laws or regulations or “solutions”, freedom and the market takes care of it. The internet is much more of solution than contributing to a small problem. That form of thinking, even from a conservative point of view, only leads down the road to regulation and control, and less freedom.

The free market follows profits, and telling people what they want to hear will always be more profitable, than telling simple truth.
Yes, the internet gives critical-thinkers the power to consume a ton of reports and form their own opinions, but most people aren’t doing this. Most people don’t use the internet for investigative or comparative journalism. Most people get their “news” from their television or radio broadcast of choice.
We don’t need new laws to regulate what can and cannot be reported. We don’t need a government agency picking winners and losers by controlling funding or airtime. We need some goddamn leadership. We need a president or other high-visibility leader who can be trusted, who has proven integrity, and who communicates with “both sides” to speak to the importance of holding journalists and media networks accountable.
We need the press to keep the government in check, but we need to keep the press in check. “We”, on average, don’t give a shit, so it’s hard to see this starting with us. The corporate click-bait press isn’t likely to usher a true leader into the White House, and the people there now sure as hell aren’t going to change their tune to their own detriment, so I don’t know how we get here. While I must admit I am generally liberal, even I have to say all the Trump-Russia collusion stories are getting old to see. Do I think some of the things that are reported, and some of Trump’s own actions and statements seem a little sketchy? Sure. But ultimately, that’s why there is currently some sort of investigation going on. I don’t need to hear about it every day because at this point there really isn’t too much more to report, and to be honest it just takes away from actually debating the policies that are being put out, especially health care currently. If something comes up in the future from this investigation or otherwise, sure let’s bring it up again and discuss it, but unless/until something like that occurs I would rather see more talk about policies.

The worst part to me is how much a lot of the media alienates people, and how much I feel that extends into the everyday political discussion. You see it on all sides. I see it all the time when people call people on the left “libtards” or “snowflakes” and people on the left respond calling people on the right “Nazis” and “bigots” and “racists” and all it does it take away from substantive conversation and instead ignore any possible points that the other side may have because they are from the other side so let’s just call them names instead of actually refute arguments or points they have made.

What really blows me away is how divided along political lines so many people are. If you are 100 percent Democrat or 100 percent Republican on issues as far as the party line goes, you are also 100 percent moron. Every issue deserves discussion. There is nuance in politics which is why most congressmen go to law school.

O’Keefe had to pay out $100,000 to one of the former ACORN employees after he handed over the entire unedited videos which the California AG reviewed and found, “no evidence of criminal conduct on the part of ACORN employees nor any evidence that any employee intended to aid or abet criminal conduct.”
He even admitted in that case that he was just trying to damage ACORN and wasn’t acting with any sort of journalistic objectivity.
His entire career is like that. He releases “damning” video evidence which when compared to the raw video prove to be heavily edited segments which misrepresent the stated views of the people he films by removing context or chronologically shifting the video to make it appear bad.
By comparison, O’Keefe makes media outlets like CNN and Fox with their horribly biased and non-journalistic practices look like absolute angels.
You’re acting like the one good employee ACORN had absolves the other horrible employees who willingly helped a supposed pimp who was prostituting out underage girls and never sought help from a child advocacy group let alone the police after the meeting. You’re doing some subterfuge yourself. If O’Keefe’s undercover vids on ACORN encouraged a reform and improved protocol on how employees react to pimps and who they should contact after, then it was worth it bc, apparently, most of the employees don’t have an idea of what is right or wrong, including when it involves pedophilia.
No wrongdoing was found to have occurred by ACORN when the full video came out. That was the findings of the California AG office and the federal Government Accountability Office.
Well, half true. The case in California was a terrible case and Okeefe should be ashamed for not following through on what the workers did after he left. But the Brooklyn DA reviewed the tapes that affected their region and found that although they were heavily edited, the most damning words were still very much in context.
There was 100% wrong doing found at ACORN. You’re a liar. There was no criminal wrong doing. As being an unethical asshole is not against the law. One of the employees caught on tape had gone to the police and had been leading on O’Keefe. There was no way for O’Keefe to know that; the rest of the employees did not. That employee sued him as they lost their job and were doing the right thing.
Which means the rest of them were actively giving advice for criminal conduct and had no intention of reporting it to the police.
Not really, the msm just do to okeefe what they did to center of medical progress. Throw around ‘deceptive edit’ and dont back it up when the full tapes are released.

I’m sure I’m the minority opinion here but project veritas has a history of editing video. I don’t think we should look too much into what they do until they release raw footage. When it cuts to the background images for the “because it’s ratings” part it sounds very different than the preceding lines. CNN does suck 99% of the time but that doesn’t mean any attack against it is credible.
All videos are edited. Every single one. This ‘deceptive edit’ crap falls apart when the full vidoes are released showing it in the same context.
Ok then let’s wait until the full video is released before making concrete judgments.

Meanwhile useful idiots read an article from Salon that claims they watched the full videos and that the clips were deceptively edited. It rewards shock headlines and ‘fake news,’ because no one wanted to purchase journalism and even if they did, public trading of news companies means cost cutting and share holder profits are more important than news…. so what?

But this isn’t anything new. Sensationalist news has been a part of the human experience for centuries.
Media mongrel Hearst from the early 20th century made his fortune off of fake news. It was common in the 19th and early 20th century. Some what died down in the mid 20th century; and became dominant again at the end of the 20th century.

NPR has a horrible liberal bias. They’ll pick a topic like ‘The benefits of abortion’ and then discuss the topic in a somewhat fair manner. But the bias was built into the topic and no amount of honest discussion can overcome that, especially when 90% of the people talking are liberals.

So if you’re a typical reader of Salon or viewer of MSNBC and you have been duped into thinking you’re somewhat moderate; than you may think NPR is “towards” the center. But there is no doubt that it leans left.

As a regular NPR listener, I can assure you that they spend a wildly disproportionate amount of time pushing issues that are only important to a tiny minority of the population (surprise: that would be a varied number of far-left activist groups that send them press releases on the topic). In the particular example I’m thinking of, the cause represents something like 10% of a 5-10% minority in the U.S. I hear the same “news” and “personal interest” stories promoting that issue literally every day. The only things that ever change are the names of the people involved (and maybe one or two minor details). It’s the exact same political narrative, hammered over and over and over again. It is literally no longer newsworthy, yet I still hear it in their “news” coverage every day.
The thing is, I’m sure that NPR doesn’t even realize how disproportionately they’re covering the topic. It’s of particular interest to them and most of their audience because it reinforces their preexisting worldview biases…and the issue has been weaponized and is now being used to attack anyone on the “other” side of that issue.
The thing is that they make no bones about it being liberal, and they are at least good at disclosure. You hear how liberal they are every 15 minutes when the call out supporters.
They also have conservative guests on all the time. Congressmen, PR staff from think-tanks, candidates and staff. They come off as smart, engaged people just looking to make things better. Sure, most of the audience and all the staff think they’re wrong. But it’s opposition, not smears
If you just want to know what’s going on in the world, you could do a whole lot worse.
I stopped listening to NPR during the 2012 election. They would have a “panel” about a political topic. The Moderator would be a hard core democrat. Then he would have 3 panelists on. One who was extremely far left (socialist), one who was a hard core Democrat, and one who was moderate (who they called a Republican). The “Republican” threw Romney and Republicans under the bus on every topic and talked about how Republicans were extreme (the guy supposedly representing Right).
That panel would have been horrible enough had they had a real conservative on there who actually believed in Republican policies (as he would be out numbered 3:1); but the fact that they put up a strawman of a Republican on just so he could provide legitimacy to the program was down right infuriating. Fuck that network.

I may not agree with most of y’all on a lot of issues, but I do agree that there are loads of issues plagueing(sp?) this country. Media and journalism being pretty damn high up there. Especially the fact that it is a driving force if the polarization and partisanship of politics we have today.
I am a big fan of government funded stuff like NPR/PBS/etc, but the thing I am worried about just as you are is how can this be funded by the [insert political party] without them having undue influence over content and context that is out out…it’s a tough question with a probably even tougher solution.
Every group will deny and try to fight news and reporting that makes them look bad. It’s PR, I get it, but when that party is directly responsible for the funding of said programming, how can one prevent retaliation when they report on the actions (good or bad) of that party.
If liberals can post salon and mother jones articles 24/7 on r/politics, they’ll probably believe whatever CNN told them anyway.

Most of the time, most of the news from all these different “partisan” outlets is actually identical. There’s not much difference in the handling of facts, only the angle or the narrative. So when you’re looking up a story that actually matters, read the same story from 8 different, competing, clashing outlets so that forming a narrative is impossible.
News outlets are dishonest, but they don’t usually fabricate. Their spin is more like a reality TV show being edited, inserting context, or removing relevant facts. Reading all the different edits at the same time quickly reveals what is craft, and what is real. Once you do that, you have the facts.
The news brings you the facts because that’s what you ask for. But that’s not really what people want. Their business model is about offering clarity, interpreting the facts into understandable storylines. They take a complicated, crowded, confusing world, and make it nice and neat. Demand is created for a product that has nothing to do with facts. If the news industry was a gas station, facts would be the gasoline, and narrative would be the snacks and drinks.
“The news” is an entertainment product. News junkies are not informed people, they are just entertainment addicts. If you want to be informed, you have to think like a journalist, not an addict.
e: TV news is especially bad because of the medium. TV is slow, information-light, and non-interactive. Good for interviews and speeches, little else.
At the end of the day, this is what happens if you leave journalism to the free market. State sponsored news would be infinitely worse, of course, but this video is a perfect example of what happens when you try and make informing people a business.
I only trust news that doesn’t use click bait titles, doesn’t use dramatic language, and moves on to something else once the segment is over. That pretty much leaves pbs.
The current media situation is a direct result of the elimination of the fairness doctrine by Reagan, and especially the Telecommunications act of 1996 courtesy of Clinton. It’s astoundingly difficult to get a straight true version of almost any news event these days.

With the internet and the democratization of information, it is not that difficult to get actual hard facts and even read spin from all sides and form your own opinion.
I think most people are just either lazy, don’t care, or want to read something from their perspective. With your take, it seems the only logical solution would be some state intervention or some new law, which would not be good.
That is a lot of trust in people. Most people just use the internet to find the “facts” to back their pre-conceived belief and stop there.

I sort of disagree about the internet part. I think the internet contributes to the problem because it allows people with zero critical thinking skills access to reams of truly fake news that they aren’t equipped to deal with. I recall a few months ago my Facebook feed lit up with stories posted by my more conservative friends and relatives about how Clinton was under indictment, and had fled the country in a private jet with the FBI hot on her heels. Then there was the whole pizzagate thing that ended with a guy barging into a pizza restaurant with a gun looking for a nonexistent basement full of pedophilia victims. I don’t know what the solution to all this is because regulating the internet in any way that would alleviate the problem would have massive negative consequences, and would most likely be unconstitutional to boot.

I just completely disagree, and believe you, and others, are blowing it out of proportion. One, I understand many people get their “news” from facebook, but it is not a news source. Rarely are people actually reading the articles posted, just the headlines and others’ opinions and then arguing in the comment section. It is more of an activity than just getting the news.
And ok people are dumb and lazy, but still, the majority of Americans, as they should be, are politically apathetic and actually don’t care about any of this shit. They just want their cute cat videos and memes, go to their jobs pay for their shit and pursue their own happiness. It is tough to see that when you are passionate about politics and see the craziness going on, as am I, but it is true.
And pizzagate was a fringe conspiracy, not believed by many, and I understand that more were open to it being true, but only a very small amount actually actively believed in it. And, overtime, the community who did actively believed in it shrunk, and I believe that is a direct result of continuous research and discussion on the open internet. That guy who went to the pizza parlor clearly was crazy and has some other issues, and was he motivated or spurred by this small fringe conspiracy community? Yes, probably, but again, it was very, very small. I am more concerned about main stream news outlets and the left openly saying the GOP is going to kill people and all republicans are Nazis, which is all accepted and mainstream, and if true, I mean somewhat justifies violence, if they are all Nazis and going to kill people?
So, you speak of trying to find a solution to something that is not really a problem. That is just what scares me, the left and right do that all the time. Err on the side of not making laws or regulations or “solutions”, freedom and the market takes care of it. The internet is much more of solution than contributing to a small problem. That form of thinking, even from a conservative point of view, only leads down the road to regulation and control, and less freedom.
I’d agree with you if I didn’t see people I regarded as reasonable and intelligent falling for this crap on a daily basis. I’ll also reiterate that I’m in no way advocating for more internet regulation, but I don’t buy the free market will fix things argument either. The free market follows profits, and telling people what they want to hear will always be more profitable, than telling simple truth.
Yes, the internet gives critical-thinkers the power to consume a ton of reports and form their own opinions, but most people aren’t doing this. Most people don’t use the internet for investigative or comparative journalism. Most people get their “news” from their television or radio broadcast of choice.
We don’t need new laws to regulate what can and cannot be reported. We don’t need a government agency picking winners and losers by controlling funding or airtime. We need some goddamn leadership. We need a president or other high-visibility leader who can be trusted, who has proven integrity, and who communicates with “both sides” to speak to the importance of holding journalists and media networks accountable.
We need the press to keep the government in check, but we need to keep the press in check. “We”, on average, don’t give a shit, so it’s hard to see this starting with us. The corporate click-bait press isn’t likely to usher a true leader into the White House, and the people there now sure as hell aren’t going to change their tune to their own detriment, so I don’t know how we get here. Sad.

This same video was posted there, and rather than be concerned about a CNN producer laughing at the idea of ‘ethics’ in their reporting, they instead claim that Okeefe only makes fake news. They are burying their heads so far in the sand that they will deny video and audio evidence, that couldn’t possibly be taken out of context, and merely attack the source. (not to mention that their favorite video against Trump, the Billy Bush grab-em-by-the-pussy video, is exactly the same type of video.)

PP does actually sell fetal organs though… totaling on avg. $2-3k for all the organs sold in 1 fetus. This is not some conspiracy theory either. There are published receipts and invoices from organ/tissue repository companies ordering these fetal organs directly from PP to then sell to biotech or academic centers.
Shipping tissues is expensive, they aren’t dumping a fetus’s liver into a leftover Amazon Prime box and sending it on 1-week USPS. It involves very expensive refrigeration packages, fast shipping, and so on.

the jump cuts are because this is a secretly taped conversation only loosely connected to the topic it is being presented as connected to. You have to remove context in order to present this in a way that gets the message out that the messenger wanted.

It’s painfully obvious CNN has been hyping the hell out of this story with little to no new useful information. BUT, It doesn’t indicate at all however, that the Russia story is fake, just that CNN, like ALL cable news, is about selling a narrative their audience wants to hear, because ratings are king. I’d prefer CNN devote their time to reporting on the Nepotism, Cronyism, and incompetence of this administration, and shut the hell up about Russia until there is something to report.

While I must admit I am generally liberal, even I have to say all the Trump-Russia collusion stories are getting old to see. Do I think some of the things that are reported, and some of Trump’s own actions and statements seem a little sketchy? Sure. But ultimately, that’s why there is currently some sort of investigation going on. I don’t need to hear about it every day because at this point there really isn’t too much more to report, and to be honest it just takes away from actually debating the policies that are being put out, especially health care currently. If something comes up in the future from this investigation or otherwise, sure let’s bring it up again and discuss it, but unless/until something like that occurs I would rather see more talk about policies.
