Thursday July 26
This was a reggae jamming, scrabble playing, football gaming, card sharking, wine drinking, and caterpillar eating day. We don’t have too much more time in Serenje, so we’re taking it all in. Nate and I went shopping and bought some mwinkos (wooden spoons). We had nshima, inkoko mumuto (chicken in tomato gravy), ifisashi (chibwabwa - pumpkin leaves - with ground peanuts), chilemba (beans), kalembula (sweet potato greens), ubowa (local mushrooms), uluya (tiny fish), chikanda (hardened root porridge with ground peanuts), and chipumi (caterpillars) for dinner.

ADRIANA SALOMON. FOOD AND NATURAL MEDICINE PRESENTS: ZAMBIA FOOD: UNETE TO MY NETWORKS FOLLOW ME BY PINTEREST: ADRIANA SALOMON.
Zambia, officially the Republic of Zambia is a landlocked country located in the center-south of the African continent. It borders the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the north, Tanzania to the northeast, Malawi and Mozambique to the east, Zimbabwe and Botswana to the south, Namibia to the southwest and Angola to the west. It was known as Northern Rhodesia during the colonial era and its current name comes from the Zambezi River, the country's main river. Zambia proclaimed its independence from the United Kingdom on October 24, 1964, with Kenneth Kaunda as its first president. You can not talk about typical Zambian cuisine, because the country's cuisine is strongly influenced by English cuisine. There are fish dishes such as sea bream, perch and nkupi, a delicious lake salmon, or antelope, chicken or pork meats. The most typical specialty is shima, based on corn with chicken and pork meats. As for desserts, the traditional fruits such as grapes, plums, apples, pomegranates, oranges, papayas, pineapples, bananas and wild fruit, such as pineapple chutney and sweet potato cake. The culture of Zambia is the traditional one of the Bantú town, with European influence. Before the founding of the current country, the population lived in independent tribes, each with a different way of life and management. One of the results of the colonial era was the growth of urban areas, so that diverse ethnic groups converged and began to live together in towns and cities, influencing each other and adopting a certain European culture, creating the so-called "Zambia Culture" . Zambian basic diet is based on corn, normally eaten in the form of thick soup called Nshima (word Nyanja), prepared with corn flour and accompanied by vegetables, beans, meat, fish or sour milk depending on the place. The Nshima is also prepared from the cassava.
FOLLOWING ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS RECIPES OF ZAMBIA FOOD: ZAMBIA IFISASHI, VEGETABLES WITH MANÍ SAUCE:
It is a very traditional dish of the Zambesa cuisine, they are simply green leafy vegetables with peanut sauce, you can also have the presence of meat on rare occasions.
It is usually accompanied with Nshima, a kind of ball of mashed corn flour. INGREDIENTS: 500 g of peanuts, toasted 1 chopped onion 2 tomatoes, cut in cubes 250 gr of pumpkin, cut in cubes 500 gr of spinach leaves 5 green cabbage leaves, finely chopped 1 sweet potato, cut in cubes 1 cup of peanut oil 1 cup of water Salt Pepper INSTRUCTIONS: Sauté the onion for a few minutes over medium heat. Add tomatoes and peanuts. After a few minutes, add all the vegetables and water. Cook for 10 minutes over high heat. Lower to medium / low and cook over low heat for 30 minutes, stirring frequently until the liquid is reduced. Garnish with toasted peanuts on top.

Flaming licks fiery italian cheese bagel croutons.
Prices spices Bombay potato spice mix.
Wildlings harbaneo chilli and lemongrass duck crackling RRP £6
New york deli mumbai mix RRP £1.50
Upton cheyray megladon hot and fruity sauce RRP £4.50
firstly I would like to say I unboxed this box live on the BoXession group much to the groups amusement; but I have to say this was one of the more enjoyable unboxing videos I have done. I was looking forward to trying this box as it was something really different.
You can watch my unboxing now over on our YouTube Channel…
Both my partner and I have been testing the products over the past week, and have enjoyed it. I would also like to say that I like the variety of the items in the box as there were things in there that I would normally overlook.  That is a great thing to have in a box; its get you wanting more!
Box Contents
The first item I’m going to talk about is the hot-shot sauces. First is the juju sauce, this was extremely hot and definitely not one for the faint hearted. I struggled with this one! Made with scotch bonnet and piri piri chilies it’s a sure win for you chilli heads. The second one was the char. This is the BBQ one and I really liked this; it’s not what I would call hot but it is amazing! It is smokey with a little kick, and you can put it with anything. I had it smothered over chicken with spicy bean rice and it was amazing. I went to buy this again but sadly it was not in stock. Lastly there’s the zwao piri piri. My partner tried this one again with chicken and really enjoyed his meal. He said it was fairly hot but he’s very hard to gauge with hot food; yes he’s the guy pouring the hottest sauce he can find in the chicken restaurants! All these sauces are made by mushemi fire and they focus on Zambian cuisine.
dav
mde
Next was 2 x recipe cards one recipe Zambian ifisashi (groundnut chicken), and one for a slow cooked fragrant lamb curry. I didn’t get to try making these, but I will definitely be trying them out soon! It also included the method for the Bombay potato (I’ll talk about this later).
Third up was the flaming licks chilli and onion marmalade. I’m a big fan of chutney’s and marmalade’s and just unboxing this and looking at it you can tell. It was well made, the colour was just beautiful! I decided to give this one a go in a cheese sandwich, and also with some crackers. I have to say it wasnt for me, but I took it to a dinner party with me and a couple of people really liked it so I found it a new home where it was appreciated.
Ooh this next one was really good! The fiery cheese bagel croutons… who likes a salad with plain croutons?! certainly not me! These were amazing, that good I could have just eaten them like crisps. I will be buying these again because they’re just so different and really pleasantly surprised me. They gave the throat a really good kick but you could still taste the cheese coming through. Winner all round!
  dav
dav
Now who doesn’t love an authentic indian recipe?! I sure do, it’s my favourite Take-Away. Fear not the Prices Spices Bombay potato spices give the real thing a run for their money, and you can do it in your own home! Honestly I could not believe I made it myself and it was so easy too! The flavor was deep and you get the expected amount of spice for Bombay potatoes… I just want more please!!
Don’t be fooled by the sleek packaging Wildlings harbaneo chilli and lemongrass duck crackling will get your juices flowing! Jeez these were hot, so hot they made me choke on a live unboxing! You can taste the lemongrass and duck on initial chews, and it is pleasant… them bam here comes the chilli! They are very hot, I was still feeling the after effects of these for a while. I kindly passed these to the Mr who very much enjoyed them. I like the fact that these were different, and something I have not seen before.
New york deli Mumbai mix… these do exactly what they say on the tin so to speak. They are spicy but the sultanas in them makes them sweet. This also contains nuts so avoid if you have allergies. Much better than your standard Bombay mix; these were well enjoyed at the dinner party.
Upton cheyray megladon hot and fruity sauce… Wow this was my favourite item in the box! Not only is the name and packaging amazing, the sauce is delicious! First you get the fruitiness going round your taste buds, but then you get the hot but sweet taste that tingle your tongue. I have had this with meats and also used sparingly as a salad dressing I really like this one a lot!
The Verdict
This box is packed to the brim with goodies! The value way exceeds the goods value and the product choices were well thought out. As I said before, this have been one of my favourite unboxing’s, and it really exceeded my expectations. I like the fact they have their own shop and you can re buy the products you like. I feel this box explores all areas of spicy food and is also stylish to look at. I’m interested to see future boxes from Flaming Licks, and for that reason im going to give it 5 out of 5. Thanks for reading, and Thank You to Flaming Licks for letting me review.

I did another poll this month, and because I mostly got asked for a mix of themes, as well as a good share of different people wanting different locales for food as the main one, so I decided to do one dish from each area. I hope there’s something here for everyone’s interests because I’m really fond of the meals I’ve made here myself.
A lot of my time has been going in to adding functionality for my past dishes and the new gameplay features, mostly the lot trait, which has already been started. My updated dishes (which will be available in a .zip file) should be ready toward the middle to end of the month.
Despite this all, I really hope you love what I have been able to make as much as I do. ✨🍅🎂

De-Lish: Traditional Dishes in Zambia
There are a few dishes in Zambia that are unique to Zambia and the region. These dishes are foods that the people I’ve met here identify with very strongly and in some cases don’t know how they would live without! In Zambia there are two dishes and one drink that are traditional to Zambia. The two traditional dishes are ubwali (note that ubwali is the Bemba word for nshima) and ifisashi and the drink is called monkoyo.
Ubwali is cornmeal mixed in with boiling water until it thickens enough that you can make nshima lumps from the mixture. It is a basic carb served at every meal and is by far and away the nations favorite food. I did once ask my students what their favorite food was, they all said ubwali, there were 67 of them. They like other things - they ‘like’ biscuits, fritters, apples etc. - however, ubwali is their favorite. It is not just children’s favorite food, adults love ubwali in equal measure. I have had adults tell me that ubwali is their favorite and that, ‘they do not feel like they have actually eaten if they have not had ubwali,’ or that, ‘they are never full until they have had ubwali,’ or that, ‘they think they would probably just die if they did not have ubwali at every meal.’ Neighboring countries also have ubwali. The swahili word for ubwali is ugali and Malawian Tonga ubwali is called nsima. If you are visiting Zambia, nshima is the number one traditional food to try.
Ifisashi is a traditional dish served with ubwali. Nshima is made by mixing ground peanuts with some kind of green leafy vegetable - rape, pumpkin leaves, sweat potato leaves or cabbage - with a little salt. Ifisashi is a little more time intensive as they crush the groundnuts with a mortar and pestle. Because it is a little more time intensive the dish is often served at special occasions like weddings, funeral, when guests come over or as a special treat. This is by far one of my favorite dishes. Done well ifisashi is creamy, a little nutty and is just wonderful.
The traditional Zambian drink monkoyo is made from pieces of maize and sometimes sweet potato and sugar mixed and left to soak in water. Monkoyo is often left for up to three months to ferment, thought it is mixed everyday, and is slightly alcoholic. Monkoyo is also served mainly during special occasions like weddings or Independence Day (Zambian, on October 24th.) The flavor kind of reminds me of sour beer, the similar ‘sour’ taste but also vaguely sweet and a slight taste of corn.
Lastly, I would not necessarily call it a traditional dish - a traditional ingredient perhaps? - but here in Bembaland people also eat caterpillars as a snack. High in protein and freshly cooked in oil it tastes like a french fry!
If you ever come to Zambia, I would recommend trying the local food to see what people eat. And, if you are served ifisashi or monkoyo it’s a compliment or an occasion!

ADRIANA SALOMON.
